Last Thursday, Livingstone School students enjoyed their first Sabre Day of the year. Students chose from a variety of activities designed and executed by the staff. “Teachers choose to lead an activity they are passionate about and it is an opportunity for students to choose something that appeals to them,� says teacher Eliza Grose. Her group of students spent the day kayaking and canoeing, first at the Pincher Creek pool and then at Beauvais Lake. Despite the chilly temperature, there were plenty of smiles, laughter and learning.

“The quality of her work is just amazing,” Joyce says, “but the only way to see it was in person.”

Until now.

Thanks to Joyce’s advocacy of Annora’s work, and her fundraising efforts, Glenbow in Calgary has digitized 260 of Annora Brown’s images from their collection.

The move is an important one in terms of revitalizing interest in Annora’s work, and preserving her legacy.

Though she never met Annora, Joyce says she felt a bond with the artist that transcended her artwork.

“I’m also a professional, single woman in rural Alberta,” says Joyce, an

Annora was known for being committed to her community, and Joyce hopes that preserving her legacy will become a community project.

“I will be a resource to anyone who wants to work with me,” she says.

In addition to her work with Glenbow, Joyce has written a play about Annora Brown called Interpreter of the Foothills, which has now been performed four times.

She has also written several cameos for the Fort Macleod Gazette and sermonized a special church service, Walking in the Footsteps of Pioneer Artist Annora Brown, which has been delivered to several congregations.

“The landscape of this area nurtured her spirit, and I think a lot of people can relate to that,” Joyce says. “She was the type of person who would ask, What is around you and how can you make the best of where you are?”

Donations are still being accepted to continue the digitization project at Glenbow.

Cleaning up after the end of the Rumhead Enduro took two hours. When the Crowsnest Conservation Society had a booth at the Lifestyle and Outdoor Adventure Show, Alistair stepped up to man it.

They even joined the Crowsnest Community Choir. Alistair hadn’t sung in 30 years, though he was in a choirboy in England.

Weed Wednesdays were of interest because it was an outdoor activity, and pulling knapweed in Montana in 2014 opened their eyes to the threat of invasive species.

With Weed Wednesdays, they were expecting the focus would be on removing dandelions and thistles.

Instead, they were handed a guidebook, the Alberta Invasive Plant Identification Guide, which outlined invasive species and provided photos of the weeds.

“They’re really quite pretty flowers. It feels a shame, almost, to pull them up,” Alistair says.

People actually brought some of these plants to our environment because of their beauty. The problem is that many of these weeds are a threat to native species.

The couple continued to attend Weed Wednesdays, because it was important work and they enjoyed the company of the other volunteers.

It wasn’t too difficult knowing how to identify what was a weed and what wasn’t. The leaders highlighted what they were looking for at the outset, and if you were unsure, you could ask.

Many of the weeds are concentrated in a particular place.

The real challenge was to completely pull the whole plant. However, even cutting these weeds prevents millions of seeds from spreading, Alistair says.

On each Wednesday, the pair spent the whole three hours in the field, but volunteers could come and go, depending on what was possible for them, Gail says.

The final Weed Wednesday of the season featured a barbecue and had the largest turnout.

The municipality hopes weeding efforts will continue next year.

Riding club presents annual awards Submitted by Wendy Francis Turtle Mountain Riding Club held its annual awards banquet Oct. 2 at Lundbreck Community Hall. The event was catered by Chris’ Restaurant.

High-point winners this year were beginner Emily MacDonald, tiny mite Derrick Toppin, junior Morgan Dingreville, intermediate Hailey Grove and senior Hayley Strandquist.

Emily received a headstall and reins and the other high-point winners received a buckle for their efforts.

Derrick Toppin also was awarded the highest high-point trophy and the horse-and-rider trophy for his 146 points, riding his horse Cash.

James Jensen was voted in by members present as sportsman of the year and Stan Francis was awarded the volunteer of the year award .

Kiah Simpson, Mia Jensen and Londyn Friehiet were awarded second, third, and fourth placements in the tiny mite age group. Rylee Stedman, a tiny mite, received a participation award.

In the junior division, Danielle Hann, Zack Hann and Julie MacDonald received second, third and fourth placements for a job well done.

Intermediates Macey-Jo Friel, Sarah Kirby and Kayla Zoratti placed second, third and fourth in their category.

Seniors Sacha Anderson, Kelsie Simpson and Suzanne Kirby placed second, third and fourth for their hard work this season.

Lindsey Davidson, Pam Houze, Sandra Stafford, Tammy Jensen, Carolyn McLaurie, Wayne Tomlinson, Richard Williams and Theresa Hann all received awards for their participation and efforts .

My Little Corner I hope you’ll enjoy the Fire Prevention Week feature in the following 14 pages.

We’re able to dedicate this amount of space to our local fire departments thanks to the advertisers who supported the project.

It’s fitting to be writing these words on Thanksgiving Day as our communities have much to be grateful for when it comes to the calibre of our emergency services.

Members of our volunteer fire departments do not hesitate to put their own lives at risk to save people, animals, homes, businesses and other structures.

Their willingness to step into dangerous situations is admirable, especially as most involved with our fire departments are volunteers.

Small-town firefighters deal with a wide variety of calls — house fires, wildlife issues, motor vehicle accidents and medical emergencies, to name just a few.

Each location poses unique challenges, and firefighters here often have wind as an adversary to deal with.

Firefighting is a profession filled with situational diversity, and one where department members must function as a cohesive team. This leads to a brotherhood between the men and women who must trust fully in one another while on the job.

Facing traumatic circumstances on a regular basis makes it critical that camaraderie and support extend beyond the workday.

Emergency workers in small communities are on call at all hours for our sake.

Off duty they are just like the rest of us, going about their personal and professional lives — that is, until someone dials 911.

Whether the alarm sounds during Christmas dinner, in the middle of the night or just before a child’s birthday party, our firefighters race to the hall, gear up and run toward the fire.

Sincere thanks to those who serve as firefighters because they love what they do.

Expiration dates on alarms would be a great topic for conversation, given the theme of the week.

Smoke detectors are generally meant to be replaced every 10 years, Pat says. The expiry date is on the side of the alarm.

As detectors age, the electronics deteriorate, and dust and dirt can affect the sensor’s sensitivity.

Some detectors may work to a degree after 10 years. “But the question is, will they give an early enough warning, or are they accurate enough?” Pat asks.

If the alarm has expired, he recommends calling an electrician, picking up a new alarm at a store or calling the firehall.

Batteries should be replaced at least once a year. It’s easy to remember if you do it each fall, at the time when you adjust your clock for daylight saving time.

All smoke detectors have a test button. Do this once a month and you’ll know you’re battery is charged and the detector is functioning.

The Pincher Creek fire department has 18 members, with another 10 in Lundbreck and eight in Beaver Mines, Pat says.

All of the firefighters are volunteers except for himself and Chief Dave Cox. Both Pat and Dave contribute volunteer hours on top of their fulltime jobs at EMS. Fire prevention and public relations are part of Pat’s responsibilities, so Fire Prevention Week is important.

Besides checking the expiry dates on alarms, Pat also encourages readers to be mindful that grass in this season is becoming dry, which makes the risk of grass fires high.

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years Did you know that smoke alarms expire? If you didn’t, you’re not alone.

“We tend to underestimate the remarkable job of a smoke alarm and the technology it uses,” says acting fire commissioner Spence Sample.

“Many people tell me they had no idea that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years even if they are hard-wired.”

One of the perceived challenges can be finding out how old the alarms are.

“It’s actually quite simple,” he explains. “Each alarm will have a date of manufacture on the back.”

He recommends investing some time in your family’s safety by checking each alarm and writing down the date of manufacture.

Keep this information where you can easily find it each year or enter replacement dates into your calendar. This will help families keep track of when alarms need replacement.

“Smoke alarms are one of your family’s best safety tools. Make sure they are going to work when you need them most.”

While smoke alarms have been encouraged for decades, Fire Prevention Week provides an opportunity to re-educate people about their importance, new features and new options for installation and maintenance: — Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and make sure everyone in your home knows their sound.

— If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.

— Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they’re 10 years old, or sooner if they do not respond properly when tested.

— Never remove or disable a smoke alarm.

Message from the acting fire commissioner Oct. 9 marked the beginning of another Fire Prevention Week. The theme this year features smoke alarms and the importance of replacing aged, out-of-date smoke alarms.

Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Quite simply, because smoke alarms are your best tool for safety in your home, but they are taken for granted.

Research shows us that a properly installed and working smoke alarm can cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. Yet we know that too many homes in Alberta do not have this life-saving device and in too many homes they have been disabled.

In as little as three minutes, a fire can become deadly to the occupants due

to toxic smoke from burning synthetic materials present in drapes, carpeting and furniture. Fires don’t happen like in the movies. They are fast and dangerous and we need every possible second to evacuate. Smoke alarms are a key part this quick evacuation.

So we will continue to remind all Albertans about the tragedies and loss fires can cause. And as always, we will take this opportunity to remind Albertans about the ways they can prevent fires and protect themselves and their families.

Cowley and Lundbreck firefighters promote fire prevention

By Brad Quarin Residents of the Lundbreck and Cowley area can sleep soundly in the knowledge that, should the unexpected happen in their small communities, their small-but-able teams of firefighters are on

guard.

The hamlet of Lundbreck is served by a volunteer brigade under Pincher Creek Emergency Services, while the village of Cowley is under the eye of the Cowley Volunteer Fire Department.

Both teams of volunteers deserve thanks during Fire Prevention Week — and year-round.

For Fire Prevention Week, Lundbreck brigade members are heading over to Livingstone School to give a presentation on fire safety, covering alarms and escape routes.

As in Pincher Creek, the Lundbreck brigade

focuses on kindergarteners, says brigade captain Anne Molnar.

Anne and Cowley firefighter Jannet Findlater recognize the importance of knowing if your smoke detector has expired.

Jannet notes that having a properly working detector contributes to a faster response time.

“Minutes are important,” she says. Quick response saves damage and makes people safer.

Anne urges residents to check the detector for its expiry date.

“It expires. It may or may not work,” she says.

That risk can translate into substantial danger.

In Cowley, residents who find their alarms have expired can contact the department via the village office to have firefighters inspect it.

If a Lundbreck resident finds the house alarm expired, the brigade can help install a new one, Anne says. Detectors are readily available from retailers with hardware departments and those whose specialize in fire-safety products.

Jannet describes the Cowley firefighters as a small department of eight volunteer members.

They meet for training every second Monday and

also serve as first responders as they are trained in first aid.

There is no typical day in their department.

Their equipment is often donated by the village, and fundraisers are held if they need more.

The Lundbreck brigade has eight members, all volunteers. It can be quiet in Lundbreck, although strong winds sometimes pose hazards.

Lundbreck firefighters also serve as first responders, offering ambulance services if needed.

As well, Deputy Chief Pat Neumann estimates that the Lundbreck firefighters are called three times per year on average to assist in Pincher Creek.

One tip Anne would like to share with readers is to clean chimneys, because creosote, a product of combustion, builds up and can be very flammable.

Pat describes it as a “black, gooey” substance.

“It burns like gasoline.”

He suggests finding a certified inspector to check chimneys.

His famous quote lends itself perfectly to the discussion of fire safety.

“It takes a small investment of time to set your home up with properly functioning smoke alarms,” says acting fire commissioner Spence Sample. “And that investment might just save the lives of your family.”

To ensure your family will be alerted to any smoke or fire danger, Alberta’s Office of the Fire Commissioner has four guidelines.

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement.

2. Install smoke alarms inside bedrooms.

3. Smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or on ceilings by following the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Avoid installing smoke alarms near windows, doors or air ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.

In larger or multi-story homes, the sound from a distant smoke alarm may be reduced to the point that it may not be loud enough to provide proper warning, especially for sleeping individuals.

In these homes, the Office of the Fire Commissioner highly recommends interconnection of smoke alarms. This means that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all do.

A licensed electrician can install hard-wired multiple-station alarms. Wireless alarms, which manufacturers have more recently begun producing, can be installed by the homeowner.

“Although the normal life span of a smoke alarm is 10 years, they are electronic devices,” says Sample. “They can become inactive as they age over time. That’s why regular testing is so important.”

He says Albertans should test their smoke alarms monthly. First, press the test button. The alarm should sound within a few seconds.

This will ensure the alarm is receiving power.

Next, test your alarms with smoke. (Never use an open flame to test the alarm, as you could burn yourself or start a fire).

“Monthly testing is essential to make sure smoke alarms are in working condition. This is the only way to know for sure.”

If your alarms are battery operated, replace the batteries at least once each year or when the low battery chirping sound is emitted by the alarm.

If the environment around the smoke alarm is dusty or if there are cobwebs, the openings in the smoke alarm can get clogged and this may prevent smoke from entering and triggering the alarm.

Vacuum the outside of the smoke alarms to remove any cobwebs and dust.

A passion to learn, a desire to serve

By Erin Fairhurst Eight years ago, Lorne Gault had recently relocated to Bellevue from Calgary when he was approached by Trent Fraser, the current acting chief of Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue.

“He asked me if I’d be interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter and I said absolutely,” Lorne recalls.

For Lorne, who started out in Station 23 in Bellevue, the appeal of being a community firefighter was the opportunity to learn something new, as well as the rewarding experience of being of service to his community.

“I wanted the challenge to be able to learn as much as possible,” he says. “The training opportunities that are available to us are just fantastic.”

“It’s just a great way to learn about a community, and to be involved and help out.”

Lorne is now the team lead of one of the FireSmart crews that are working throughout the community to remove fuel sources near

the urban interface.

“By removing the fuel, it gives us a better fighting chance of keeping the fire on the ground in the event of a start,” explains Lorne.

Crews have been working near Willow Drive in Coleman and Southmore in Blairmore, and will soon be tackling another project near Valley Ridge in Frank.

“The public has been very positive and the projects have been well received,” says Lorne. “I think people appreciate what we’re trying to do here.”

Lorne says that when he looks back on his tenure with Crowsnest Pass emergency services he’d absolutely do it all over again, and that he would recommend this rewarding and challenging experience to anyone on the fence about volunteering.

His advice to new recruits?

“Bring a positive attitude. Be ready, willing and eager to learn.”

rescue scenarios, such as backcountry, swift water and rope rescue.

This event will also take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Thursday, the Bellevue firehall will host a special motor vehicle collision demo, in which a vehicle brought in by South Country Towing will be used to demonstrate what happens during a vehicle extrication process.

“We’ll pull off doors and show what we do when we deal with MVC scenarios,” Mark says. As with the other events, the evening will go from 6 to 8 p.m and will include a barbecue.

Finally, on Friday, the week will wind down with a pancake breakfast held at the Blairmore firehall from 8 to 10 a.m.

In addition to the busy week of events throughout the community, fire drills will also take place at all Crowsnest Pass schools along with special presentations for the students.

The theme of the week is Don’t Wait, Check the Date and refers to the importance of replacing aging and out-of-date fire alarms and smoke detectors, but Mark says he and the rest of the Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue members will do their best to answer all questions about fire safety and prevention.

“We’re always here to answer questions, or to help,” says Mark, stressing that all of the halls have an “open door” policy in place for the community’s needs.

Beaver Mines brigade emphasizes importance of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

By Brad Quarin The hamlet of Beaver Mines can take pride in having a dedicated fire brigade serving the community.

The core team of eight firefighters are all volunteers and they commit a fair amount of time and effort to something important.

“We carry our radios around during the day and night,” says brigade captain Allen Tapay.

Members are on call 24 hours every day of the week, as there are no rotating shifts. The brigade attempts to get as many members as possible to respond to each call.

The Beaver Mines hall responds to an average of 40 to 60 calls each year, including ambulance calls.

The group serve as first responders to Castle Mountain and are often called to quad accidents, heart attacks, diabetic comas and other medical emergencies.

Additionally, the brigade volunteers to stand by with EMTs in Pincher Creek for sporting events such as rodeos and basketball tournaments.

This being Fire Prevention Week, their contributions to fire safety deserve special attention.

The focus of this year’s Fire Prevention Week in Canada is smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and knowing the expiration dates on these alarms.

Like his colleagues in neighbouring communities, Allen stresses how important this is. “Those smoke alarms save more lives than anything else,” he says.

As well, the quickness of the response to alarms is precious. “It saves people and buildings.”

Allen also highlights the importance of carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a fast killer, and a person can fall victim to it while sleeping.

If your alarms are expired, they should be replaced. “You can find them at any good hardware store,” he says.

People who are replacing their alarms should consider taking this opportunity to upgrade to an alarm that can detect both smoke and carbon monoxide.

Allen also has a fire prevention tip: If you’re starting a campfire or burning brush, make sure you have a permit.

Remember to make absolutely sure your fire is totally extinguished. Often, an accident occurs when a small fire gets out of control.

Keep your cool when the alarm sounds Have two ways out Imagine waking up to hear your smoke alarm beeping. You are groggy, confused and scared. This is a time when many people panic and end up making serious — sometimes fatal — mistakes.

In fact, according to research from Alberta’s Office of the Fire Commissioner, how a person reacts in a fire can be the difference between life and death. Approximately 20 per cent of people who died in a home fire in a 10-year period in Alberta did not act when the smoke alarm activated.

Make sure that everyone in your home knows exactly what to do when the alarm sounds or there is smoke or fire. A good escape plan that your family has practiced will help all to deal with a scary situation in a calm and safe manner.

— Get out quickly if there is a fire because fire moves extremely fast. You may have only three minutes or less before the toxic smoke overtakes you (visit www.3minutedrill.alberta.ca).

— Teach children to never hide in closets or under beds.

— Choose two ways out of every room. If heat or smoke blocks the usual fire exit (door), then use the sec-

ond way out (another door or a window).

— Test doors before opening them: Feel the door and look for smoke coming in around the edges. If the door is not hot and there is no smoke coming in, open it slowly, but be prepared to slam it shut if heat or smoke rush in. If the door is hot, use your other exit.

— If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the nearest exit. Smoke will rise to the ceiling, leaving cooler, cleaner air close to the floor.

— Parents should take into account the limitations of young children, the elderly or the disabled when planning a fire escape.

— If you live in an apartment building and the smoke alarm goes off, use the stairs only. Never use an elevator.

— Choose a family meeting spot, a safe distance away from the home.

It can be as simple as meeting under a neighbour’s tree.

— Practise, practise, practise. If your family has rehearsed various emergencies regularly, you will all know exactly what to do if the real thing occurs.

When you are making your escape plan, do not assume young children will be woken by a smoke alarm.

According to recent research, children younger than nine years old experience the deepest sleep of all groups studied.

If you have young children at home, it is best to practise your home fire escape drill during sleeping hours. It is an adult’s responsibility to awaken young children during a fire emergency and get them out safely.

In the blink of an eye, life as we know it can go up in smoke.

The two were out on a rainy day last month during Pincher Creek’s version the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

Wendy says the chore would be a much less daunting if everyone picked up a few pieces of trash every time they use the creek path.

— Rick Hansen At the age of 15, Rick Hansen’s life was irrevocably changed when a truck accident resulted in a severed spinal cord RICK HANSEN that left him paralyzed Paralympic athlete, advocate and philanthropist from the waist down.

This event became the impetus that led him to become a lifelong crusader for the physically disabled.

Rick’s campaign started on a personal scale with a commitment to achieving his innate athletic potential.

He became immersed in wheelchair sports, including wheelchair volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair track and field.

His love of sport lead him to pursue a bachelor’s of physical education degree at the University of British Columbia, making him the first person with a physical disability to ever earn this degree from the esteemed university.

But it was his talent, ability and hard work that allowed him to achieve worldwide recognition as an athlete.

With a focus on marathoning, he won numerous

competitions and most notably earned three gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the Paralympic games of 1980 and 1984.

He also competed for Canada at the 1984 Olympics in wheelchair track as an exhibition sport. He was the first person ever to break the two-hour mark in a wheelchair marathon.

Despite all his athletic achievements, it was his Man In Motion World Tour that really put him on the map — figuratively and literally.

Inspired by the courage of his friend Terry Fox, Rick decided to circle the globe in his wheelchair. The purpose was to prove the potential of people with disabilities while raising funds and awareness.

The tour allowed Hansen to cover 40,000 kilometres over 34 countries across four continents in 26 months.

He raised $26 million for spinal cord research and quality of life projects.

After the tour, Rick was ready to begin the next phase in his mission to “create a world without barriers.”

He established and became the CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that’s committed to empowering people with disabilities to achieve their potential while advocating for a more inclusive world.

To date, the foundation has raised over $220 million for spinal cord injury research and other programs. Educating, motivating and promoting change are all in a day’s work for this inspiring Canadian.

Actress Pamela Anderson, NHL player and coach Randy Carlyle, singer Larissa Loyva and CEO Peter Nygard are among the more renowned Finnish-Canadians around today.

Though not the largest Canadian subculture — the 2011 census reports 136,213 Canadians claim Finnish ancestry — this community is substantial enough to produce a number of newspapers, a radio station, a yearly festival and a range of Finnish cultural organizations.

The first Finns came to Canada in the late 1800s but a more substantial immigration occurred in the early to mid 21st century.

There was both reason to leave (notably the Finnish Civil War and resulting economic depression) and incentive to come (the Canadian Pacific Railway was actively recruiting

labourers).

In addition, much of the Canadian landscape and climate seemed quite hospitable to Finns due to its semblance with their homeland.

Logging, farming and mining were common work for early immigrants, while those who arrived later were more inclined to make their livelihoods in urban centres.

Today, the largest Finnish communities are in Ontario and British Columbia, with sizable populations in Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Kirkland Lake, Timmins and Toronto.

Finnish-Canadians have enriched the national mosaic of our nation with their political, athletic, artistic and entrepreneurial contributions.

A local look back Pincher Creek’s ranching heritage

Throughout our nearly 140 years of settlement history, the Pincher Creek area has been well connected with the local ranching industry. The efforts of the North West Mounted Police horse ranch and the subsequent corporate and family ranches ensured a vibrant economy for this western community.

The NWMP Pincher Creek ranch dates back to August and September 1878.

The force required a reliable source of quality horses in order to conduct law enforcement patrols across this part of the Canadian Prairies. The Pincher Creek area, with its reliable water sources, good grasslands and winter chinooks, was an ideal choice for that ranch.

Close to 350 head of horses were raised here and the operation thrived till the eve of the First World War, when transportation technology afforded the Mounties other options with their patrols.

The success of the horse ranch proved that privately operated ranches also would flourish here.

Within a few short years, there was a collage of corporate and family-owned ranches scattered across the prairie landscape. Some of their holdings were deeded lands while others were leased from the dominion government.

Leased holdings could be up to 100,000 acres per ranch, for a cent per acre per year. Leases could be for up to 21 years.

The system was designed to encourage ranching development in the Canadian West.

Early corporate ranches in the Pincher Creek area included the Walrond, established in 1883 between the

Livingstone Range and the Porcupine Hills to the east.

There also was the Oxley Ranch, nestled farther into the Porcupine Hills, and the Cochrane Ranch, originally set up west of Calgary but relocated in 1886 to the more favourable conditions between the Waterton and Belly rivers.

Initial financing for these conglomerates often came from English or eastern monetary sources.

Pioneer family ranches included the Mountview Ranch, established in 1887 by Arthur Edgar Cox (18561946), Pincher Creek’s first school teacher, who received land for his participation in the Rocky Mountain Rangers.

To its immediate north was the South Fork Ranch, operated for nearly 35 years by F. W. Godsal, who also was active in literary, historical and mountain-climbing circles.

The English-born Herbert Maynard Hatfield (18551945) operated his Waterton Ranch southeast of Twin Butte.

The colourful remittance man Lionel Brooke is recalled for his highly visible ranch in the Beauvais Lake district.

Richard Lynch-Staunton established the Antelope Butte Ranch north of Lundbreck during the pioneer era.

His brother Alfred Hardwick, one of the founding NWMP members of Pincher Creek, set up his own ranching spread a few miles upstream of our ranching settlement.

These are but a few of the many frontier ranching efforts that made significant economic contributions to this area.

Trunk or treat offers new take on trick-or-treating

By Brad Quarin For many children, Halloween means costumes, candy and fun.

This year, there will be something new in Pincher Creek as Vertical Church is holding its first trunk or treat.

Anyone interested in decorating a vehicle and filling the trunk with candy for children to collect from has until the week before Halloween to register.

While the prospect of candy will likely be enough to pique children’s interests, the purpose of the event is more significant.

“It’s really about bringing the community together,” says organizer Gemma Ney. This will be a fun, safe event for families.

The trunk or treat will be held on Oct. 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vertical Church parking lot.

Businesses, families and individuals can sign up and decorate a vehicle, with a chance to win prizes in a contest. In filling up the trunk, people are asked to be mindful of allergies and avoid nuts.

The event is free and the church will provide free hotdogs and beverages. Trunk or treat is an ideal celebration for children up to 10.

It will be followed immediately by an event for older youths and teens. There will be a campfire outside the church, and cider and hot chocolate will be served. The Halloween youth night is also free.

Gemma got the idea for a trunk or treat from the common practice in the United States.

While some people view it as an alternative to trick-or-treating, some will likely be participating in trick-or-treating as well, she says.

Trunk or treat may be a good way to get involved in Halloween for families who don’t live in town, and may not know if they will get trick-or-treaters.

Gloria (Mona) Brun 1934 – 2016

Glory (Mona) Brun, beloved wife of the late Glen Brun, passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2016, at the age of 82.

Mona will be lovingly remembered by her children, Elaine (Don) Zimmer, Susan Brun, Eldon (Susan) Brun and Wanda Brun; grandchildren Krishanda (Lawrence) Zimmer, Arianna (Darren) Zimmer, Ryan (Crissy) Brun, Earl (Jill) Zimmer, Miranda (Ray) Brun and Erin (Evan) Hofforth; great-grandchildren Yoenne, Isis, Myelle, Cormac and Henry; brother Eric (Betty); sisters Alma (Earl) and Carol (Tom); brother-in-law Harry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.

Besides her loving husband, Glen, Mona was predeceased by her granddaughter Megan Brun; sisters Eileen (Johnny), Kathleen (Bruce), Nellie and Jean (Harold); and brother-in-law Boyd.

Mona was born in the Carlos area of central Alberta. The middle of Valentina and Earl Gray’s seven daughters, she was just younger than her only brother.

As a young woman, Mona worked at the Rimbey Hospital and in the family sawmill, first in the lumber mill, and later as a cook when her first children were underfoot. One of her favourite jobs was grading the road, a job she also enjoyed later at Sleepy Hollow.

Mona and Glen were married in 1955, and the children underfoot soon made them a family of six. The next years were spent following the pipeline, until Mona and Glen settled down on the farm in the Oras district east of Rocky Mountain House.

They spent enjoyable years raising livestock, spending time with grandchildren (“Settle down”), golfing and market gardening. Glen had to hide her raspberry jam for the regulars.

In 1987, they moved to Pincher Creek, bought Sleepy Hollow Campground and became small business owners. Mona ran the business for 10 years following Glen’s passing in 1993. In the summers, she was assisted by her grandchildren, teaching them good work skills and brunching.

Since 2003, Mona was retired, enjoying her great-grandchildren and bingo. As her health failed, she became less active, which was very hard for her. She was a Gray girl and liked to work. Mona spent most of 2016 at Vista Village, where she was looked after by her many caregivers and visited by loving friends and family.

A funeral service was held at Eden’s Funeral Home on Oct. 11, 2016, with Pastor Andrew Craig officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Pincher Creek.

Pincher Creek hosts cross-country runners The junior high athletics association league held its district cross-country run in Pincher Creek on Sept.

Moon Shadow Run fostered activity and community spirit

By Brad Quarin Walkers and runners were treated to spectacular fall scenery as Pincher Creek held its second annual Moon Shadow Run in mid September.

The event was a success, with around 210 participants, from three-year-olds to octogenarians.

“The evening turned out to be gorgeous,” says John Verhagen, chairman of the run committee. “Many people we talked to said they loved the trails because of the colours.”

A highlight of the evening was “watching the kids with their parents, running across the finish line,” according to John.

He says the purpose of the run was to encourage families to “get off the couch and enjoy the fresh fall air.” So it was delightful to see children discover that exercise can be fun.

An unexpected highlight of the evening came after the run, when about 20 children aged three to six launched into an impromptu dance party.

The DJ played “YMCA” and the “Chicken Dance” for them, and it fed into the idea of community the run is meant to foster.

John and Kathleen Hancock were among the senior participants.

Jaxon Hammond, 13, was new to the race. His mom had heard of it, and he thought it would be interesting. Although he is involved in track and field, and will be competing in cross-country for Matthew Halton High School against other schools, he had never run a 2.5-kilometre trail before.

Walkers and runners also came from as far as Calgary, Lethbridge and Fernie, B.C. John Verhagen was surprised to learn that people came from such a distance, and believes that most of these visitors were friends of local families.

Last year, most of the out-of-town participants came from Crowsnest Pass.

This year the Sole Survivor race fell on the same day as the Moon Shadow Run. Nevertheless, a few Crowsnest Pass residents ran Sole Survivor in the morning before taking on the Moon Shadow Run in the evening.

This year, the Moon Shadow Run supported KidSport Pincher Creek, which helps with children’s sports registration fees. The group was a “perfect fit for the run,” which aims to spur activity, John says.

Thanks to donations from runners and non-runners alike, nearly $1,000 was brought in through online pledges.

TransAlta contributed another $500 after its yard was cleaned and the scrap metal exchanged for money for the donation.

While the run is primarily non-competitive, this year some recognition was also given to first-place male and female winners on each trail: 2.5 km — Jaxon Hammond (Pincher Creek), Abigail Whitehead (Pincher Creek) 5 km — Mathias Gelber (Pincher Creek), Bronwyn Barber (Calgary) 10 km — Jeffery Nicol (Lethbridge), Megan Doby (Calgary)
