Community effort leads to new wheels for Ellie

By Shannon Robison Lachlan Rempel shed tears of gratitude Monday morning as she and Kirk Weisshaar were presented a van equipped with a wheelchair ramp. It will make life easier for the couple and their five-year-old daughter, Ellie.

Ellie has a rare genetic disease, 15q13.3 microduplication syndrome. This chromosomal abnormality has led to seizures, developmental delays and intellectual disability. She is unable to walk due to poor muscle tone and trouble with her hips, which didn’t grow properly.

Ellie has endured six surgeries in her short lifetime, along with countless EEGs, MRIs and other tests.

As an infant, Ellie didn’t meet developmental milestones, aspirated on liquids, had low muscle tone and the soft spot on her head wasn’t closing. Her parents’ concerns led to genetic testing after a neurologist recognized waves for the disorder on an EEG. Hydrocephalus (excessive buildup of fluid in the brain) was also discovered at this time.

Lesions on the right side of Ellie’s brain mean the left side of her body is weaker. “You can literally draw a line down her body,” Lachlan says.

Lachlan describes Ellie’s seizures as unique and severe — she tightens her feet and hands and it’s like her body is paralyzed. The seizures began when Ellie was six months old and it took a four-month stay in the Calgary children’s hospital to find the right match of medications to keep the seizures under control.

It’s been a year since Ellie’s last seizure and it is a relief for her parents to have the seizures in check thanks to medication.

Gastrointestinal complications are also common for Ellie. Lachlan explains that most of us don’t think about the muscle use needed to swallow food and hold it in one’s stomach. Due to her low muscle tone, Ellie isn’t able to keep food or medication down. The youngster is fed via a gastronomy tube in her abdomen that delivers nutrition directly to her stomach five times a day.

Lachlan says that having a non-verbal, incredibly happy child with a high tolerance to pain can make it difficult to know what is going on with her daughter.

“Ellie is just the sweetest little thing,” her mom says.

Lachlan feels she and Kirk are blessed to have such a happy child.

Lachlan says parenting a severely disabled child is a tough job. “You have to be such an advocate,” she adds.

“The pendulum has swung — it used to be that children were institutionalized, now parents are most often on their own to do everything.”

Lachlan is grateful to have made many friends in the special-needs community through social media. The closest families she has found dealing with the same syndrome as Ellie are in Vernon and Montreal. To meet them some day would be a wonderful thing.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with Ellie’s treatment are significant. Kirk and Lachlan are greatly appreciative of the assistance they have received from

Angels Within Us and other community groups.

When Ellie was hospitalized for four months in Calgary in 2012, the family was separated and trying to get by on one income. Angels Within Us offered assistance by providing gas cards and help paying bills.

When Ellie was two, Angels Within Us stepped up again to give the family a hand by purchasing a dynamic movement orthosis suit.

The DMO suit provided constant compression to stimulate Ellie’s nerves. Lachlan explains that because Ellie was not walking and had low tone, her brain wasn’t putting the energy into those areas because it was trying to be efficient. “If there is constant pressure and stimulation on those parts, then the brain adapts.”

Lachlan says use of the DMO suit gave Ellie more stamina and straightened her posture considerably. They were able to use this treatment for about a year before the suit was outgrown.

Angels Within Us also assisted the family with the cost of adding a wheelchair ramp to their home. The ramp was built by Bill Hilliard.

Ellie now weighs 45 pounds and needs to be moved every half hour. Both Kirk and Lachlan have developed back trouble and Lachlan worries about dropping Ellie.

For the past two years they have tried to come up with the means to purchase a vehicle that would accommodate a wheelchair ramp.

It is important to them that Ellie be able to go wherever they go, whether it’s to Soulfest to enjoy a day of music, to the swimming pool or on a school field trip.

Kirk and Lachlan don’t want their daughter to miss any opportunities due to her special needs.

Feeling that their family had already benefited significantly from Angels Within Us, Lachlan began approaching other organizations and service clubs to see if there were any resources available.

The Ricky Ryp Foundation pledged assistance in the amount of $11,000 and the Pincher Creek Elks Club offered to help.

When Angels Within Us president Sherry Mackenzie learned of the family’s plight, the group got the wheels turning.

They checked with Keith Foster, owner of Westcastle Motors and Castle Ford Sales, who happened to have a 2014 Dodge Caravan on the lot. Caravans are the vehicles most often converted for wheelchair lifts, and the group knew they were fortunate to find one locally.

Keith is a strong supporter of Angels Within Us and offered the group a discounted price on the vehicle.

“It’s nice when those who are deserving get what they need,” he says.

Sherry and Angels Within Us secretary Michelle Duncan felt they had lucked out and wanted to get the vehicle to Kirk and Lachlan as quickly as possible.

It was a surprise for Ellie’s parents to learn that Angels Within Us was assisting them again.

The Elks ran a 50-50 draw at the Angels Within Us gala in November, raising $1,245. This amount immediately doubled when draw winner Jim Duncan donated his win back to the Elks. Charlie Price, treasurer of the club, says they have also donated an additional $1,500 toward the van.

The Elks hosted a meeting Sunday to co-ordinate fundraising efforts among service groups. The Elks hope to double all money raised through their national organization.

In addition to financial assistance from the Ricky Ryp Foundation, the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek has donated $1,000 and the Chinook Spitze No. 6 Masons Lodge has committed the same. Additional donations may come from the Shriners, the Pincher Creek Legion and other groups.

As Angels Within Us has already covered the amounts paid to Westcastle Motors and Ultimate Freedom (for lift purchase and installation), donated money for the van will be paid to the retailers, who will direct it back to the group to continue their charitable work.

Lachlan says they have received an incredible gift and that when she shares stories of Pincher Creek generosity, people are in awe. It is her intention to pay it forward and help others as her family is able.

Ricky Ryp Foundation donates to Boys and Girls Club

By Brad Quarin The year began with a beautiful gesture to the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club, as the Ricky Ryp Foundation awarded the group a grant of $5,500.

The funding comes after the club received about $50,000 in donations from other groups last year.

This sounds like a lot of money, but the club still has expenses and big dreams and continues to be a worthy cause to support.

“The club does a lot more than a lot of people realize,” says president Scott Warris.

The group keeps many children active with a host of interesting and fun activities, benefiting many who might not be able to afford memberships.

A spokesman for the Ricky Ryp Foundation says anything involving children is important to them, because helping children was important to the late Rick Rypien.

The foundation likes that the club provides positive options for youth, and wants to make sure it has the right resources.

Generally, the foundation supports those in need, with medical issues or injuries, and local talent in

athletics, academics or the arts.

“It makes a difference for the kids,” says Karey Lee Watanabe, program director.

“With donations, it helps us keep our program fees down to a minimum.” It also allows the club to continue quality programs.

Scott notes that the club supports not only young children, but teens as well. Some of the funding the club receives is passed on to 40 Developmental Assets, which provides teen programs.

40 Assets is dedicated to building positive attitudes, experiences and behaviours that support youth, enabling them to become healthy adults in their communities.

Scott believes the club is currently in fairly good shape, but there are challenges in administration and staffing, and the club is in the process of hiring a fulltime administration manager.

Karey says this is the second straight year the Ricky Ryp Foundation has supported the club.

“We’re so grateful, because they’re a local foundation and they support great programs,” she says.

“We’re proud of being involved.”

The $5,500 will go mostly to after-school programs, including cross-country skiing on Fridays, swimming in Sparwood or Pincher Creek, sledding and snowshoeing.

Despite funding the club received in 2016, the club still has administration and program costs for 2017.

The club also hopes for a new bus. The current one has aged and, while there are no real problems with it, there’s question as to how much longer it will last. A new bus would cost between $60,000 and $80,000.

Once a bus has been purchased, the Boys and Girls Club hopes to secure a clubhouse. The group currently uses Pete’s Park for two months of the year and Isabelle Sellon School for the rest.

ISS works well, but the club would love its own space with an office and room the children can call their own.

The Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club will resume after-school activities on Feb. 6.

Lethbridge College opens new regional campus

Submittted by Lethbridge College Lethbridge College is expanding its services in southern Alberta by opening a new regional campus in Pincher Creek. The campus officially became part of the college community in late December 2016, with the signing of a collaborative agreement between the college and five community partners in Pincher Creek.

The partner organizations are Pincher Creek Adult Learning Council, Pincher Creek Parent Link Family Centre, the Town of Pincher Creek, Pincher Creek Municipal Library and Matthew Halton High School. They will work with Lethbridge College to identify and serve local educational needs and to establish and deliver programs and services through several community locations.

A previous regional campus in Pincher Creek operated until 2013, but this new campus will use a different format, working directly with partners on community-driven projects that will meet the needs of

learners in the area.

“This campus would not be possible without the dedicated support of our community partners,” says Leah Wack, Lethbridge College’s manager of regional stewardship. “Each of the partner organizations provides a representative to serve as an advisory to the college, and they are all exceptionally committed and community-minded individuals.”

“We look forward to increased collaboration and connection with resources to follow through on learner-centred needs,” says Monica Sczyrba-Davis, chairwoman of the Lethbridge College Community advisory council and co-ordinator with Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning.

“Various Pincher Creek organizations have been working together for about a year now to bring about the return of a Lethbridge College regional campus. For the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council, the campus provides

support for seamless transition from one learning experience to another within our community and beyond.”

Community members will be able to access a variety of Lethbridge College services, including exam and testing services; information about post-secondary programs and institutions; distance-learning support; assistance with funding applications; and referrals to counselling, advising and other Lethbridge College services.

A variety of programs or courses may also be accessible through the Pincher Creek campus, whether through face-to-face instruction or flexible learning options such as online or video conferencing to meet the needs identified by community partners.

Lethbridge College is currently conducting a survey of educational needs in Pincher Creek, which will provide valuable information to the college and its partners about the programs and services most needed

in the community. Adult residents of Pincher Creek are encouraged to take the survey online at lethbridgecollege.ca/communitysurvey.

“Pincher Creek is a unique community with the potential for offering a full range of learning resources to its community and surrounding area,” says Monica. “There are several initiatives in our community that will benefit from a long-term renewed relationship with Lethbridge College.”

In addition to the Pincher Creek campus, Lethbridge College also operates regional campuses in Claresholm and Vulcan County.

The college is actively exploring opportunities to partner with more communities to expand its network of regional campuses.

Powwow celebrates 30 years of band-governed education

By Brad Quarin In November, the Piikani Nation celebrated three decades of local governance over education.

While many Albertans take their control over the province’s schools for granted, 30 years ago the schools in Brocket were administered by the federal Department of Indian Affairs, with band council.

The Peigan Board of Education was one of the first boards established in an Alberta First Nations community, say superintendent Lisa Crowshoe and Valerie Hache of Indian Affairs.

“In the 30 years that Peigan Board of Education has been in existence, their main focus has been to promote Blackfoot language and culture in our community,” Lisa says.

“Presently, we’re really working hard towards having our young children, our students, to know the history, the governance, the treaty, our Indian residential schools and what it means for our Truth and Reconciliation in Piikani,” she adds.

Principal Crystal Good Rider says there are exciting programming developments in the works at Napi’s Playground Elementary School and Piikani Nation Secondary School.

There are also challenges going forward, including in funding.

Elder Peter Strikes With a Gun recalls that his father, Charles, turned over part of his land for construction of the current schools.

Before then, there were two residential schools on the reserve, St.

Cyprian’s Anglican Residential School and Sacred Heart Catholic Residential School. Both closed in 1961.

There was also a denominational school, which wasn’t residential, in the 1950s, Peter says.

In 1986, the Piikani Nation started talking about the band assuming control over education.

It would mean having a say in the curriculum, programming, the hiring of staff and busing, Lisa says.

Particularly, advocates had an eye to incorporating Blackfoot language and culture in local education. “That was the biggest thing that they wanted to have changed.”

The move was spearheaded by Nelbert Little Mustache and Lionel Crow Show, who negotiated with the government, Peter says. He also participated in the transfer.

So did Ben Kawaguchi who, as principal of the school since the early 1980s, had the knowledge and expertise to know how to run operations, Peter says.

A referendum was held in the Piikani Nation, and the proposal for a board was passed without much dissent. Peter says Indian Affairs conventionally accepted band decisions, including this one.

The council’s parent advisory committee, who were major advocates of the proposal, became the first Peigan Board of Education. Ben, who passed away last year, was one of the first directors.

“They were instrumental in having

the education system where it is now,” Lisa says. “They really set the groundwork.”

In 1987, the band council granted PBOE the right to dispense post-secondary scholarships.

Aside from inserting more Blackfoot ways into the curriculum, the school has long reflected the provincial curriculum while filling federal requirements.

History of the reserve is included along with Pincher Creek history, and Blackfoot geography is included along with the geography of southern Alberta.

Funding can be a challenge. Lisa says Alberta public schools receive an average of one-third more funding per student than the Piikani schools.

According to Livingstone Range School Division’s Three-Year Education Plan, instructional spending per student from Early Childhood Services to Grade 12 was $11,060 for the 201516 school year. Support services per student were $3,553.

The Peigan board’s financial administrator, Casey Provost, says the Piikani schools received an average of $5,933 in base funding and $3,075 in special-education funding per student last school year.

The base funding was increased by four per cent this September and there is some funding for proposed programs.

The lack of funding affects the students.

“They have less of everything,” Lisa

says.

Provincial schools often seem to have an edge in upgrading, bringing in new computers and video suites.

Principal Good Rider says that even lower teacher wages can affect students.

The Piikani schools have a fair amount of turnover and the office has to keep new teachers informed of what the school does.

Despite challenges, there are positive developments. She says a Piikani healing initiative therapy room was launched as part of the high school redesign.

Students who may be struggling with outside issues may go into the room and express themselves with an art piece.

The schools are also working on their elders-in-residence program.

Elders are welcomed to the schools at least three times each week to share oral history and knowledge.

Above all, Peter says, everyone is striving to improve education in the Piikani Nation.

The school was selected by the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative to receive more early literacy education, Lisa says.

The program, led by the family of former prime minister Paul Martin, emphasizes more time spent on literacy improvement for kindergarten to Grade 3 students and provides teachers with better assessment tools.

My Little Corner Walk on with hope and you’ll never walk alone.

This sentence is relevant in many situations.

It holds special meaning right now for Ty Tracey, Brittney Newton, Taylor Armstrong, Jody Peebles, John Kinnear, Sheri Armstrong, my daughter, Jaiden Panchyshyn, and me.

As Champions for Brenda, we have worn this slogan on T-shirts and hoodies for the past four years.

We came together as a group to help Ty pull off a marathon floor-hockey challenge as a fundraiser for his mom, Brenda (Macdonald) Tracey. A few months later we also hosted a comedy night.

Individuals, businesses and organizations from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and well beyond supported these efforts and gave Brenda hope as she waited for a double lung transplant. She was grateful for the support and held those who helped her as heroes.

Suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, she was listed as Status 2 (in greatest need) for a transplant in 2013.

Hope, grit and pure determination kept Brenda going and her raw spirit inspired many.

Brenda passed away Monday in Lethbridge. She was surrounded by family as her champions sent their love.

I met Brenda in the spring of 2012 when interviewing her for a story about her challenges with COPD and the cost involved with a pending transplant.

Her situation was dire as she had been struggling with the disease for seven years already. The inset photo was taken that day.

She spoke openly and with brutal honesty about her fears and her lack of hope and, during the course of the interview, we became friends. Our conversations over the years weren’t always pretty, but I learned something from each one.

In 2012, Canadian statistics showed that while 2,124 organs were transplanted, another 256 people died on the waiting list. Brenda and her family faced that grim reality every day.

She felt tremendous guilt that her survival was dependent on the death of another. The disease was as devastating mentally as it was physically as she waited each day for “the call.”

While she always held hope, there were days when her resolve wavered and she ranted against a disease that was taking so much away not only from herself, but also from her family.

She longed to play with her grandchildren in the park and she showed me the spot in the backyard where she envisioned marrying Jim Tracey, her longtime partner.

While it didn’t happen in the location she hoped for, Brenda and Jim were married last summer. She was hospitalized in Edmonton at

the time and the location was not important.

We saw Brenda in critical condition more than once, but she always rallied.

Jaiden and I visited as we were able, but somehow it never seemed to be often enough and I will carry some guilt with me for that.

I’m grateful for several visits with Brenda before Christmas, while she was hospitalized in Lethbridge. She had been declared legally blind due to a stroke in her eyes, but still knew me when I entered her room.

Diminished vision cut her off from text and social media messages that had become her means of communication during long hospital stays. This was most unfortunate — I know her phone was full of notes she wasn’t able to read.

Her wit was as sharp as ever and we shared laughter and tears in those final visits.

She had more fight in her than anyone I’ve encountered.

I know others have been through donation and transplant situations, but this was a first for me. Having Brenda as a friend has given me perspective I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Before meeting her, I hadn’t given serious thought to organ donation. I couldn’t imagine that anyone would want my asthmatic lungs, my eyes that don’t see well without glasses, or any of my other imperfect body parts.

I thought differently after I learned to see the world through her eyes. I have been registered as an organ and tissue donor since 2012 and hope that when the time of my death comes, I will leave behind a gift for someone in need.

According to Colin Zak, senior communications advisor for Alberta Health Services, there are currently 37 people in the province waiting for lungs and 534 waiting and in need of other organs.

It’s a very personal decision and it’s not the right one for everyone.

I do hope, though, that sharing the final chapter of Brenda’s story might encourage even one person to register as a donor.

We learn something from everyone we meet and, unfortunately, at some point we also must say goodbye. I am grateful for the lessons taken from knowing my loving, inspirational, spirited, funny, insightful and stubborn friend.

At our Lungs for Life fundraiser in 2014, I purchased a painting by Cora Collins titled “A New Day for Brenda.” It hangs in my living room and is a daily reminder to live each day to the fullest and to never give up.

I hope you are breathing easy now, my friend.

Sincere condolences to Jim, Ty, Kylie, Jonah, Hilary and Jesse.

Walk on with hope and you’ll never walk alone.

If you want to be an organ and/or tissue donor: — Talk about your wishes with your family and tell them exactly what you want to happen when you die.

— Give your consent to donate, register online at MyHealth.Alberta.ca. You will need your personal health number and the process of completing the information is guided. Once your registration form is complete, print a copy to mail or fax to Alberta Health. Once received, your information will be added to the database.

— Intent to donate is shown through documenting your willingness to be an organ donor through the online form.

Legal consent is completed once you print and submit the form with your witnessed signature.

— You can also visit a registry office or sign the back of your health card to indicate your intention to donate.

— If you are interested in being a living donor (kidney, part of the lung or liver, or tissue such as bone marrow or stem cells), contact the Southern Alberta Transplant Program. You can call 403-944-4280 to speak with someone at Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

— Registry information is confidential, but you are encouraged to speak with your family about your wishes.

— You can choose the organs and tissues you would like to donate.

— If you have certain diseases and/ or high-risk social behaviours you may not be able to be a donor. Suitability is determined by medical professionals after one’s death, so should not discourage anyone from signing up to be a donor.

— If you change your mind after registering as a donor, you can withdraw consent by calling Alberta Health. You cannot withdraw your consent at a registry office.

— A family member will be asked to sign a consent form saying they have been informed about, and agree with, the donation process even if you have signed the back of your health card or registered online. The family is involved with donation decisions and most will agree to carry out their loved one’s wishes if they are aware of them.

— If you have questions about organ, tissue or body donation, please go to MyHealth.Alberta.ca, call Health Link at 811 or speak with your doctor. If you have questions about the registry, you can call the transfusion and transplantation unit at Alberta Health at 780-422-9657.

The Breeze Mailbox Town operations and snow removal The Town of Pincher Creek operations team, under the director of operations, is comprised of four co-ordinators — water, wastewater and capital projects; streets, sanitary and water distribution; solid waste and fleet management; and facilities and open spaces.

There are five full-time maintenance workers, one full-time water/ wastewater treatment operator, one administrative professional and two part-time temporary staff within the department.

The operations portfolio is extremely diverse and includes the maintenance, management and upgrades of key municipal infrastructure as well as water, wastewater, stormwater, water distribution, sanitary distribution, garbage collection, snow removal, facility maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, digging graves and cemetery maintenance.

One key aspect of our departmental success is communicating with residents and addressing community concerns. The operations department also participates in transportation, recycling and joint municipal disaster planning initiatives.

It is through the dedication and hard work of our departmental staff that we can consistently maintain our high commitment and service level to Pincher Creek’s residents and visitors alike.

Throughout the snowfall and blowing snow events of Dec. 24 to 29, the operations team responded actively, in accordance with the priority areas established in the Town of Pincher

Creek Winter Street Maintenance Policy 302-13A. While snowfall accumulation did not meet the minimum 25 centimetres as dictated by the policy to activate plowing, on-call staff acknowledged that blowing snow had the potential to cause traffic impediments and engaged in plowing and sanding, beginning on the morning of the 24th and for a minimum of four hours each day thereafter.

Staff continue to maintain drifts caused by blowing snow and have begun snow removal efforts in accordance with the priorities set in the policy.

For more specific information relating to plowing, sanding and removal of snow, including snow fence installation, specific response thresholds, and application for special accommodation snow removal, please visit www.pinchercreek.ca under the Streets section of the Residents tab.

Due to the climate and weather patterns in Pincher Creek, we anticipate snowfall and blowing snow to be an ongoing challenge for operations staff throughout the first quarter of 2017. Youth in Action grant applications now being accepted Submitted by Joey Going The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta is currently accepting grant applications for its Youth in Action program, which focuses on getting young people involved in philanthropy by giving back to their schools and communities.

In its first five years, Youth in Action has awarded $48,000 to over 45 projects — ranging from recess equipment and gardening supplies to band instruments and science-lab equipment. It has also supported community events, mental health projects, reading programs, summer camps and leadership programs.

“Youth in Action grants are a favourite at the Community Foundation,” says executive director Charleen Davidson.

“We are continually impressed with the great ideas our youth come up with when they apply for funding. It’s also very exciting to see how they consider the overall benefits of their project to their community or school. There are a lot of community-minded young people out there, and we’re very proud to support their initiatives.”

Applicants can apply for up to

$2,000 for their project. The projects must be initiated, led and organized by individuals (or a group) under the age of 25 in partnership with a Canada Revenue Agency-registered charity (this includes schools and municipalities).

More information on eligibility and funding criteria for grants from the Community Foundation is available online at www.clfsa.ca.

Applications must be filled in via the foundation’s online site at cflsa. fluidreview.com. The deadline to apply is Feb.15.

The selection process for the grants is also handled by youth, with students from the University of Lethbridge Rotaract Club working with Community Foundation volunteers to determine successful applicants.

The funding for Community Foundation grants is generated from the investment income of permanent endowments established by many generous donors throughout southwestern Alberta.

Yoga class offers barrier-free opportunity for self-help

By Erin Fairhurst As a new year begins to unfold, many of us are looking for ways to improve our mental and physical well-being. Thanks to a joint effort between Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness, the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation and local business Spry, a free weekly yoga class is being offered to do just that.

“Yoga is a form of self-help,” says organizer Randi Lynn Rinaldi. “We wanted to offer a barrier-free opportunity for people to come and experience yoga.”

By making the class free — through the support of Darcy’s Nature Walk and the health foundation — Randi-Lynn hopes to attract participants who otherwise might not have the opportunity. Yoga for Mental Wellness is designed to help those who are experiencing less-than-optimal mental health, depression, anxiety, chronic stress, chronic pain and other ailments.

The class runs Thursdays, beginning this week and ending March 30. Susan Lowe-Wylde of Spry will be on hand to offer to her instruction and expertise.

“She’s very passionate and knowledgeable,” says Randi-Lynn. “She’s perfect for the job.”

For her part, Susan is grateful for the opportunity to be involved in this important program and appreciates the support for her business. Participants don’t need to have any yoga experience and will be guided through gentle yoga postures with a focus on breathing.

“It’s something that can benefit people so much,” Susan says of yoga. “Something really special and amazing happens when you take time to become aware of your body and your breath. Your mind becomes quiet and peaceful, your worries go away and your mind can think clearly.”

The free yoga class has had such a positive reception that it is already full, but anyone interested can leave their name on a waiting list at Spry or can explore some of Spry’s other classes — many of which are suitable for beginners and available on a drop-in basis.

If you’re keen on taking part in further mental health programs, then consider the free Mental Health First Aid course being offered through Darcy’s Nature Walk for Mental Wellness and the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation. Dates for the two-day course are Feb. 11 and 12, and the class will take place at a location (yet to be determined) in Crowsnest Pass. By Brad Quarin Many children love pizza, and Pincher Creek’s Boston Pizza returned some of the love with a donation of $308.70, right in time with the holidays.

Children’s World Daycare director Marie Meckelborg says she received the call from Boston Pizza owner Grant Chen out of the blue.

“We very gratefully accepted it,” she says.

Grant explains that the restaurant has a charitable foundation, with funds accumulated from different promotions during the year.

Heart-shaped pizzas were sold on Valentine’s Day, and $1 from each sale went to the foundation. In October, $5 from sales of certain children’s meals was placed in the foundation.

For Christmas, Grant checked the charities in town, with a preference to support children or seniors for the holiday season. All of the funds were included in the $308.70 donation.

Marie says all donations go to buying materials to foster creative learning at the daycare, as well as toward a new centre.

Children’s World Daycare has wanted to obtain a new centre for nearly two years, either by renovating the current building or by moving.

A new centre would have one entrance, so the daycare would have more control over who enters, and would have more space to learn and play.

Vertical Church set for grand opening this weekend

By Brad Quarin In the short year it’s been in town, Vertical Church has already made its presence felt in Pincher Creek.

The new church is ready to celebrate its grand opening at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, to really show the community what it’s all about. The service will be followed by cake and celebrations.

Vertical Church is located next to Vista Village, on Hewetson Avenue. It is an autonomous Protestant church affiliated with a Mennonite organization.

Pastor Chris Ney says the grand opening service will “be our first real full run at it.”

“People will get a taste of what we’re going to be about.”

With the aroma of freshly made coffee in the air, visitors will be greeted by friendly welcomers and will find Chris preaching in casual dress.

The grand opening will also welcome special guests from the C2C church-planting network, which has provided coaching, mentorship and funding.

Chris recommends the grand opening for anyone wondering about their identity or that of God. This includes anyone who has or hasn’t been to church before.

He says he can understand why someone would feel hesitant about attending a church for the first time, since he didn’t start until he was in his 20s.

“We have tried to create a space where anybody and everybody would feel welcome to come in here.”

To break down any perceived barriers and create a more inviting space, the Neys have turned the upstairs of the building into a kids zone and have even added a coffee shop.

Starbucks coffee is available for a donation, which goes toward community work.

The renovations will be finished, as he wants attendees to be immersed in the message rather than distracted by a half-complete building.

Chris hopes the grand opening will signify the start of a good relationship between the church and Pincher Creek and neighbouring communities.

“We want to serve and love our community in whatever way that looks like,” he says.

To get involved, the people of the church may volunteer at the food bank or women’s shelter or even just pick up trash. Good deeds are how they hope to show God to others.

Currently, the church draws around 80 to 95 people per service, with 120 on Dec. 23. There are 25 children in the kids ministry.

“It’s been an upward growth,” Chris says, adding that they chose not to target a particular demographic, as Vertical Church will welcome everyone.

Chris says they hope to defy stereotypes of what church means.

Jean Ileane Bond passed away peacefully at the age of 94, surrounded by her family, on Dec. 29, 2016.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merl Bond, and son-in-law Terry Flanagan.

She is survived by her children, Gloria Bond (Michael Cousineau), Guy Bond (Lana McCollister) and Terry Bond. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Myke Ames (Veronica), Jared Ames (Jessica), Bryn Evans, Tristan Evans, Alisa Rose (Kevin), Donita Orsten (Wade); and by her great-grandchildren, Lux and Lily.

Jean was born in Saskatchewan on Sept. 13, 1922, and moved to Pincher Creek at an early age. She lived on the family farm near the Pincher Colony and had a lifetime friendship with colony members.

After Merl returned from the war, he and Mom met, married, raised a family and were together for 62 years. During that time they enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing at Guy’s pond in Gladstone Valley.

Mom was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking for them, especially turkey dinners. During the meals, many stories were told and laughter was abundant. She also enjoyed many crafts and was a master seamstress.

Those who knew Jean will always remember her as a kind, gentle, generous and loving person. Even though Jean experienced tough times in her own life, she always gave to those less fortunate. As well, her strong love and devotion was unconditional for her family. Her children and grandchildren were blessed with special relationships from infancy to the end.

Fond memories will be cherished, stories will be told and retold, smiles and laughter will be felt for years to come.

Although initially reluctant to go to Vista Village, it did become her home.

A special relationship was built between Mom and the devoted staff. As a family we wish to thank her many caregivers, especially those from the last 3½ years that Mom spent in the cottage.

Bradley William Anderson April 20, 1924 — Little Woody, Sask.

Dec. 31, 2016 — Pincher Creek, Alta.

In his 92nd year, Brad passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Vista Village in Pincher Creek, with his loved ones at his side. Although his last few years were difficult for him, he continued to share his unique sense of humour and tales from his past with anyone who knew him.

Brad was an anti-aircraft gunner in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941 to 1945 and he was a lifetime member of the Pincher Creek Legion. He was actively involved in many Legion activities and took great pride in doing the Remembrance Day presentation for schools in Pincher Creek and Brocket.

Brad worked for Shell Canada at Jumping Pound Creek and moved with his family from Calgary to Pincher Creek in 1960 to work at the Shell Waterton gas plant.

He retired in 1983 and remained very involved in numerous volunteer activities in and around Pincher Creek for the next 30 years.

Brad was “Mister Everywhere.” He loved attending numerous powwows and made many friends from the Piikani Nation. He was honoured by being given the name of “Apiistako” (Great White Mountain). He made many friends at the Pincher Creek Colony and enjoyed time spent with local artist and friend Leon Levesque while making bronze art work. Many volunteer hours were spent at the Bobby Burns Fish Pond, driving the Legion van and delivering meals on wheels.

Brad married his beautiful wife, Jean Opinko, in 1948. Together they raised six children. They parted ways in 1990, and Jean passed away in 2013. Brad was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by two brothers, Vernal and Wayne; and two sisters, Arlene (Vic) Bronson and Wilma (Bill) Gray.

Bradley will be greatly missed by Lorraine (Wayne) Sorge, Stacey Kettles (Tye, Maxum), Kyle (Tania) Kettles (Justin, Ryan); Linda Evans, Scott, Jordan (Jenna), Jaxon, Jayda, Jarett, Amanda (Anton) Morkin; Sharon (Jon) Mortell, Kristi (Joel) LeBlanc, Cheyne Mortell; Alan (Cathy), Bobbi (Shaun) Anderson, Bryon, Lacey, Chris, Becky; Brian, Laikynn, Amy (Ava), Amanda; Cathy (Danny) Sorge, Jayden and Alana.

A local look back Labour disputes in the development of Crowsnest Pass — Part 1

“One of the great reasons for the popularity of strikes is that they give the suppressed self a sense of power.

For once the human tool knows itself a man, able to stand up and speak a word or strike a blow.” — Charles Horton Cooley, sociologist It seems the first mine in the Crowsnest Pass opened on a Monday, and by Tuesday there was a labour dispute.

The gruelling work in the mines that built the Pass created two aspects of cultural legacy: one of a strong work ethic, and another of conflict for a cause. Crowsnest Pass has a long and fruitful historical legacy of labour movements, and more often than not they resulted in a strike.

The 1932 strike had many complex issues woven throughout, but a look back at strikes between 1900 and 1932 shows a strong sense of determination and fights for workers’ rights. During the first few decades of the 20th century, a handful of

smaller strikes, as well as some very important and pivotal disputes, would dictate union relations for the Pass, Alberta and even the nation.

In the first decade of 1900s the Crowsnest Pass had to deal with the sudden impact of a population boom. A 1901 census of the region pointed out only one community — Blairmore, N.W.T. — with a population of 257. Ten years later, another census yielded seven communities with a population 20 times larger.

A rush of eastern Europeans arrived in the West and became a significant part of the work force.

Unions saw the need to bring these men into the fold and began to champion ethnic rhetoric: “The coal you dig isn’t Slavic or Polish or Irish.

It’s just coal.”

The little-known story of Canada’s original champion

The 1900 Paris Olympics were an odd beast. Not only did they span five months, unfolding simultaneously with George Orton the Paris World’s Fair, (1873-1958) but they also lacked Athlete and author some fundamental elements of the Games as we know them today. Indeed, neither medals nor national teams were part of the equation — participants competed for independent teams, and winners received only a title. Nevertheless, an Olympiad did take place in Pierre de Coubertin’s homeland that year and it was the scene of a milestone moment in Canadian history, although no one really knew it at the time.

George Orton, who was born and raised in Strathroy, Ont., spent part of his childhood paralyzed from an injury. He was able to regain full mobility thanks to a rigorous exercise regimen and never stopped training. By the time he started his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, Orton was one of the top track and field athletes in North America. He competed mainly in one-mile, two-mile and steeplechase foot races, and won several national titles in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Orton transferred to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue his doctorate in 1893 and received an enthusiastic welcome from the institution’s athletics department. While at Penn State, he stood out as an incredible athlete who excelled

in hockey, cricket and soccer in addition to track and field. He also carried a reputation as an outstanding sportsman and brought great pride to the school until he completed his PhD in 1896.

Orton remained active in track and field long after his varsity career was over and was eventually called upon by his alma mater to join the American team at the Olympic Games. Orton accepted the offer and flew to Paris in 1900. The Canadian athlete’s stellar performance at the Games earned him the top spot on the podium in the 2,500-metre steeplechase as well as a thirdplace title in the 400-metre hurdles. However, since he’d travelled to Paris with Americans — Canada sent its first delegation to the following Games — his Canadian connection went unnoticed for decades. In fact, Orton died before the IOC finally recognized him as Canada’s first Olympic gold medallist.

It’s difficult to argue with the fact that George Orton was an incredibly talented individual whose intellect rivalled his athletic prowess. While in Paris, he impressed many with his fluency in nine languages. Later, he became an accomplished author and member of the American Society of Poets. His published works include a history of track and field at the University of Pennsylvania and several tomes about running, as well as a series of popular youth novels promoting an active lifestyle.

Orton passed away at age 85 in Meredith, N.H. While he spent much of his life in the United States, his crowning achievement was, like his place of birth, decidedly Canadian.

The 2011 National Household Survey found that 252,590 Canadians claimed to have full or partial Greek heritage or ancestry. The actual number is likely much higher, as ethnic Greeks born in other countries — Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt, for instance — may not be included in the tally. While well-established Greek populations exist in urban centres throughout the country, an estimated 80 per cent of Greek Canadians live in Quebec and Ontario.

Greek immigration to Canada began in the early 19th century and saw a marked increase following the end of the Second World War. The 1911 census recorded 3,650 Greeks in Canada. Between 1945 and 1971, that number rose by more than 100,000.

Greek Cypriots, a segment of ethnic Greeks that are native of Cyprus, also came to Canada in large numbers starting in 1974 after the Turkish invasion of the island. These English-speaking refugees set-

tled mainly in Montreal, Toronto and Kitchener, where most of Canada’s 25,000 Greek Cypriots still live today.

Culture-wise, Greek Canadian newspapers like the Hellenic Tribune and the Greek Courier continue to play a large role in helping Greeks integrate into life in Canada while keeping them informed about their homeland. Celebrations of Greek national holidays are held annually in many major Canadian cities. The most noteworthy of these festivities takes place March 25 on Greek Independence Day. From television personality George Stroumboulopoulos to Mike Lazaridis, creator of the legendary BlackBerry mobile phone, Canadians with Greek roots stand out across our country’s social, economic and cultural landscapes, not to mention its culinary scene. A LOCAL LOOK BACK, continued from page 12 families, who needed housing, food, transportation, postal service and civil services — and who needed these things quickly. In addition to the problems of a boom, the work conditions at some mines were less than ideal. The setting was ripe for a strike.

Jump ahead to 1932. Problems between management and union men erupted. The United Mine Workers of America organized to preserve wages and eventually a strike occurred, mainly against the West Canadian Collieries in Bellevue, Coleman and Blairmore. This strike was one of the largest, longest and most bitter struggles that the District 18 UMWA ever conducted, involving one-third of its membership and dictating the fate of its strongest subdistrict.

The spark for this dispute came in February when mine worker Jim Zemek refused to leave the site early when ordered by the fire boss. Unprintable words were exchanged between the two men and Zemek was dismissed.

This was the catalyst for more wide-ranging anger over low hours, low pay and other Depression-era sentiments.

In the end, it is an oversimplification to say that a settlement was reached, but on Labour Day 1932 the strike ended with a pittance of an agreement.

The Crowsnest mine workers did not get everything they wanted, but they changed the way the unions, the companies and the workers co-operated.

Bird feeders and the backyard battleground

Submitted by Crowsnest Conservation WildED Comic relief or call to battle? What’s your response to seeing a squirrel at your backyard bird feeder?

For many residents, the bird feeder represents the front lines in their winter war on squirrels. Nonetheless, squirrels are worthy opponents, bringing to the battle their acrobatic nature, problem-solving skills and obsession with energy-rich foods driven by a naturally high metabolism.

So what are your best strategies to win this war?

Exclude the enemy You can suspend your feeder on a long wire between trees, with the feeder at least 2.5 to three metres from each side, to ensure squirrels can’t jump to it.

Using rollers (such as PVC pipe or empty pop bottles) on the wire or using monofilament fishing line close to the feeder will further frustrate the squirrels.

Simple two-cage systems theoretically exclude squirrels by requiring smaller birds to pass through a protective mesh cage holding the seed tube on the inside.

Though more expensive, weight-sensitive feeders are designed with a spring mechanism that closes off seed access when a heavier animal like a squirrel or starling steps on the perch.

Baffle the enemy Baffles under or over a pole-based feeder can also help thwart squirrel thieving.

A tilting baffle of 45-centimetre diameter placed above a feeder will tip squirrels off if they approach from above, while an umbrella-shaped baffle or collar placed under a feeder will help ensure they can’t jump up to the feeder.

Placing a 20-centimetre diameter PVC pipe around the support pole of a feeder may exclude squirrels as they are unable to grasp around the pipe or get sufficient grip to climb the pole.

Starve the enemy This strategy is perhaps more humanely described as changing the seed type. Safflower and nyger seeds are typically less preferred by squirrels than sunflower seeds, peanuts and whole or cracked corn.

Call a truce Some residents embrace the approach that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, and provide additional or alternate feeders specifically for squirrels.

Avoid collateral damage Here’s a final note on how to avoid impacting other species or individuals in your backyard battleground.

Some residents try trapping and relocating the offending squirrel. However, if the surrounding food availability is adequate to support “your” squirrel, chances are that another individual will move in.

Squirrels rely on sight and smell to find food, so those unprotected natural-food stashes will be assumed by another squirrel unless you plan to dig them all up and dispose of them.

Other Internet suggestions include using sticky or slippery substances like Vaseline or other petroleum-based products to cover surfaces that squirrels try to climb. These substances can mat the squirrel’s fur or the feathers of unsuspecting birds, affecting insulative properties and increasing potential for freezing in winter weather.

Similarly, some residents have suggested mixing in cayenne pepper with the seed. Although the capsicum doesn’t affect birds, it does affect mammals (like squirrels, cats, and dogs) and these animals can injure themselves trying to alleviate the burning sensation if the capsicum comes in contact with their skin.
