Brothers recognized for entrepreneurial venture

By Brad Quarin Teens Luke and Joel Lewis own L&J Hay, a business grown from their background on the family cattle ranch. This year’s winners of the the Pincher Creek Chamber of Commerce’s junior entrepreneur Award of Excellence make their mark cutting, raking, and baling hay.

Luke says their dad baled as a child, and thought they should give it a try.

In return for haying the family’s 600 acres, the brothers received their own 60-acre parcel and, four years ago, thought starting a business could be fun.

“We enjoy farming and ranching, and thought it would be a good summer job,” Joel says. “It’s working on the farm, and outside, in the summer.

It’s rewarding work.”

He says they’ve been haying since they were old enough to drive a tractor. Luke is 19 and Joel is 17.

According to their nominator, the brothers’ business grew from selling to four customers in their

first year to having 12 regular customers now.

Joel believes they are of interest to prospective buyers because of the quality hay, the price and their delivery service.

“It’s not very often people deliver the hay,” he says. It’s intensive work to load and unload the trailer. The small bales weigh between 55 and 65 pounds, and they sell about 3,000 a year.

Luke explains that they work in shifts, taking turns haying and selling to customers.

It’s a time commitment, as Joel says they work at least eight-hour days from June to late August. This is on top of their other jobs and school. They deliver bales in the evening after school and work.

Having multiple jobs has provided cash for hobbies like snowmobiling, and Joel says they also bought some of their own cows.

“I didn’t think we were going to get it, but it’s pretty awesome it turned out that way,” Luke says.

“It’s cool just to think of having our own little business.”

The brothers were actually on stage before their parents, who accepted the environmental stewardship award for LED in Action.

Joel says it was neat to see the family was making a mark on the community.

Luke is currently studying engineering at Lethbridge College, but the brothers haven’t closed the book on L&J Hay. Luke will be back next month and the brothers hope to keep the business growing.

Children’s World gets a facelift

By Colette Sinnott The Pincher Creek Early Childhood Coalition and many volunteers spent Friday and Saturday giving a facelift to Children’s World Daycare.

The project was completed to put some training resources for infant educators into community practice.

Staff from Children’s World, Pincher Creek Parent Link, Canyon Cubs and the coalition were trained in this. It’s really wonderful when you can use what you learn right away to improve the lives of children.

The makeover was a big undertaking that took lots of planning, co-ordination, making of materials and decision-making to complete. It could

not have happened without the help of many people.

The local and provincial branches of Family and Community Support Services are the major funders of the Early Childhood Coalition and we are so thankful for their support in making projects like this happen.

The coalition strives — one project at a time — to make Pincher Creek the best place to raise children.

One Book, Two Schools gets families reading

By Brad Quarin Educators, parents and students who hope to see more Crowsnest Pass families reading together are receiving help from a most unlikely hero — a squirrel named Ulysses, the star of the book Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo.

Families with children attending Horace Allen and Isabelle Sellon schools are reading the book for Family Literacy Day. “We want people to try new books at home and to keep reading at home with their kids,” says Marcy Purcha, programs co-ordinator with Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation.

To that end, the foundation kicked off the fourth annual One Book, Two Schools program with an assembly at HAS. Copies of Flora & Ulysses were handed out to students of both schools.

As with past years, the idea is that students will follow a reading schedule at home with their families. Given the length of the book, the schedule stretches over two weeks, finishing on Jan. 27, which is Family Literacy Day. Flora & Ulysses was selected because, while mostly written in prose, it switches to comics when Ulysses transforms into a superhero.

The foundation hopes those pictures will engage younger children, Marcy says. Foundation members are big fans of Kate DiCamillo and hope families seek out more of her books.

They also sought a lighter, more fun book, in contrast to last year’s The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, which was sad in parts.

After reading each night, children can call Real Country radio the next day to talk about the book, and will be entered into a draw for pizza.

Different classrooms at the two schools will have their own activities, such as trivia questions, with additional prizes.

Readers can also enter their names into the One Book, Two Schools draw at Crowsnest Community Library to possibly win a prize. The draw may include trivia questions, says library manager Diane deLauw.

A new feature to the program will be videos on the ISS and HAS Facebook and Twitter accounts, with a community volunteer reading from the book.

These readings will follow the set schedule and will help students who might miss a night.

The cost of the program is about $3,000. This covers the books, pizza prizes and financial help from the foundation for school prizes.

TransCanada is once again donating $3,000, which should cover these expenses.

The yearly program has paid off. Past surveys show families are having fun and students are answering questions in classroom trivia activities each day.

After One Book, Two Schools wraps up, Crowsnest Community Library will continue the heroic theme with a superhero party that evening.

The event runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. It is free for all ages and everyone is welcome to wear superhero costumes, Diane says. There will be crafts, puzzles, games, stories and a superhero photo booth.

If these events get families excited about reading, the heroes to thank will be not only a squirrel, but all who come together to make the program happen each year.

My Little Corner Mother Nature has presented us with brutal weather and driving conditions over the past month.

Tuesday we saw temperatures as high as plus 9 degrees Celsius in Pincher Creek, but the tradeoff is gusts as strong as 120 kilometres per hour in wind-prone areas.

Taking the wind chill into consideration, Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek saw temperatures last week that dipped into the minus 40 level.

It’s a much different winter than any I’ve experienced in my eight years living here.

People finally stopped asking, “Is it cold enough for you?” I guess we all knew that it was.

Most of my Saskatchewan friends guffaw when I share stories of how the wind blows in southwestern Alberta, but the few who have been out this way know what I’m talking about.

I was hoping to have some statistics to include with this editorial but, short on both space and time, I will look further into this for another presentation.

My personal statistics include more vehicles in the ditches than I have ever seen, more consecutive days of bad driving conditions, more trips cancelled because of this and more rants on social media.

There have been days recently when the last thing I wanted to do was open the door and step outside.

Driving to conditions is a key safety factor for winter road trips. Posted speed limits are based on ideal road conditions and, while there have been some, most days have not been optimal for driving.

I’ve been surprised by the number of vehicles driving without headlights on, even in situations with extremely poor visibility. Even daytime running lights need to be on the correct setting to turn on automatically.

The biggest stressor for me is people following too closely. Vehicle-versus-wildlife collisions are an everyday event on our highways and the last thing I want is a semi riding my bumper when a deer suddenly crosses my path.

Even with treacherous conditions, it’s discouraging to notice how many people are still on their cellphones and not paying full attention to what’s happening on the road.

As much as we can determine our own level of confidence based on the conditions of a given day, it’s wise to remember that we have no control over what other drivers are doing.

Keep this in mind as the wind continues to blow and temperatures warm up for the week.

Look to the skies and enjoy the chinook clouds against the colours of the rising and setting sun.

The number of individuals who smoke has been steadily declining over the last few decades; however, almost 20 per cent of Albertans still smoke.

This is slightly higher than the national average.

In parts of southwestern Alberta that number is even higher.

The reasons people start or continue to smoke are varied and complicated, especially in the face of the current information regarding its harmful effects. The addictive properties of tobacco products can make any attempt to quit challenging, leaving some to think that quitting, for them, just isn’t an option. But there is help available!

QuitCore, an Alberta Health Services program, uses a multifaceted approach to support people on their journey to quit smoking. The combination of group sessions, behavioural coaching, nicotine replacement therapy and family physician support creates a system that can dramatically improve someone’s chances of quitting.

Most tobacco users have attempted to quit at some point in their life, with some making multiple attempts. If you have tried unsuccessfully to quit in the past, you are in good company.

Through the AlbertaQuits.ca website, you can sign up for a variety of support services, including a phone-in help line, text messages and an online support system. You can also search for a QuitCore group session being held in your area. These sessions run for six weeks and cover a variety of topics, from tips and tricks to use during your quit journey, to healthy-eating and goal-setting information.

Whether you’ve smoked or used tobacco products for a few years or 40, the single best thing you can do for your health, right now, is to quit. It is never too late. Your risks of debilitating health conditions — like heart disease, strokes, severe lung problems and cancer — drop dramatically after quitting tobacco use. You’ll be able to breathe easier and add precious years to your time with family and friends.

Whether this is your first attempt or 15th, AlbertaQuits.ca is a great resource to help you navigate the challenges and difficulties of quitting. This site can also be used by loved ones who might want some information to help support the quit attempt of a family member or friend.

Go to AlbertQuits.ca or ask your family doctor for more information about quitting tobacco use. Your last quit attempt might not have been successful, but don’t let that stop you from trying again. Let this time be different!

December highlights from Crestview Lodge

By Mysti Ayers We had a great time at our New Year’s party, bringing in 2017 with champagne, a balloon drop and sparklers. The smoke from the sparklers set off the fire alarm but, fortunately for us, Tracy Glen was here to shut it off.

Throughout the month we plan daily activities to make our days not so long. We participate in anything from bingo to shuffle bowling. We put on a very successful ice cream parlour once a month and roll out the tuck cart weekly for residents to purchase some goodies. Thank you to resident Joan Glen for manning it every week.

In December, we travelled out in the cold to visit venues such as the Co-op, Walmart and the Huddlestun Centre for Christmas bingo.

Donny Lambrecht and Barb Lloyd took residents on a bus trip around town to hunt for Christmas lights — this has become a yearly tradition for them. Barb also puts in plenty of time on Tuesday evenings leading our choir.

Bethany Unrah, Lois Everett, Francine Sorge, Dolly Toney, Joanne Evans and Sylvia Barbero helped throughout the month with trips, parties and other activities.

residents with the computer.

Once a month, Charlie Price shares slides, and Peter Griffith comes to lead an old-time music singalong. Quentin Stevick likes to come as well to share slides from his travels, and the Mennonite singers come to entertain the residents.

Last but not least, Farley Wuth comes twice a month to share historical hour and story hour.

Thank you all for taking time out of your busy December schedules to volunteer and make our residents’ lives more enjoyable.

A local look back

known as the co-owner of Pincher Creek’s first general store. But with the railway’s arrival, Schofield’s business interests expanded, and he too set up a general store in Cowley during the late 1890s. This he kept for six years.

Sold here were a wide variety of groceries (particularly coffee and fresh fruit when available), kitchenware, dry goods and hardware items such as lanterns, harnesses, leather bridles and tools.

Cook and heating stoves also made up part of his trade. Historical research reveals that nary a place on any of the walls in Schofield’s store was empty of saleable merchandise.

Homer C. Morrison operated a thriving farm implement dealership for close to 30 years, starting circa 1906.

His interests were supplemented by blacksmithing, which expanded in the 1910s to real estate — reflective of the booming immigration era.

Chronicling the stories of Canada’s First Nations In the 19th century, Paul Kane sketched, painted and wrote about First Nations people and the vast CanaPaul Kane dian landscape. He (1810-1871) was the most promPainter inent painter in Upper Canada in his time and may have been the first Canadian painter to earn a living from his artwork alone. His works represent a piece of Canadian history that can’t be found elsewhere.

Born in Ireland in 1810, Paul immigrated to Toronto, then called York, with his parents and siblings in 1819. Though primarily a selftaught artist, he did study painting to some extent at Upper Canada College. His first exhibition of nine paintings in 1834 showed much promise, and he eventually made his way to Europe to study the works of the masters.

It was during this tour that he met George Catlin, a lecturer and painter. Catlin felt it was important to capture the life and experiences of First Nations people — whose culture he believed to be on the brink of extinction — in the United States. Kane, inspired by the idea, decided to return to Canada and do a similar thing for the First Nations tribes of the Canadian northwest.

Kane conducted two lengthy trips to Canada during which he witnessed, sketched and wrote about more than 80 First Nations tribes.

The first trip took him from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie and back; the second, as far west as Victoria. This cross-country excursion took him two years to complete and required travel by canoe, horseback and snowshoe and on foot.

Upon his return to Toronto, Kane began the work of transforming over 700 sketches into vivid paintings that embodied a European esthetic. While the sketches were recordings of what Kane saw, the paintings were interpretative and often favoured the creation of dramatic scenes.

The works proved to be popular and he sold many of them, including 12 that were purchased for display inside the Canadian Parliament. Kane also wrote a memoir of his travels that was published in 1859 and is now considered a Canadian literary classic.

In 1871, just over a decade after his ailing eyesight forced him to abandon painting, Paul Kane died in his Toronto home. He was declared a national historic person in 1937, and in 1971 Canada Post issued a postage stamp in his honour.

Today, his works can be viewed at the Royal Ontario Museum and the National Gallery of Canada.

Chronicle of early Cowley businesses A few weeks ago we reflected on the frontier businesses of Pincher City.

Heading west, let’s chronicle some early Cowley enterprises.

This railway settlement had deep ranching connections, particularly with the Porcupine Hills and the North Fork of the Oldman River. This ensured a solid trade for pioneer commercial outlets.

Perhaps the first to be established was J. E. Davison and Co., general merchants whose history dates back to 1898, the year Canadian Pacific Railway’s Crowsnest line was completed through Cowley. Frontier goods encompassed hardware, lumber, building supplies, wagons and implements including axle grease, and western gear that featured saddles and harnesses, supplemented by groceries, food staples and crockeries.

Proprietor James Erskine Davison, who lived an impressive 98 years following his 1875 birth, operated this thriving business until the end of 1906, when it was purchased by Donald R. McIvor, who renamed it the General Supply Co. One of Davison’s major competitors was James Schofield, perhaps better

Writer Jonas, film producer Robert Lanos and musician Alanis Morissette are Pincher Creek Credit Union among the better-known Hungarian-Canadians today, but many more have contributed to our national culture. Canadians of Hungarian ancestry have influenced our country’s identity across multiple spheres, including the arts, science, business and music.

According to the 2011 Census, 316,765 Canadians claim some Hungarian ancestry, making them the 23rd largest ethnic group in Canada.

Hungarians started to immigrate into Canada in the 1800s and, until the First World War, this first wave settled mainly on the Prairies, where they became homesteaders, miners and loggers. Later migrants, those from the 1920s

onward, more commonly made the cities and towns of southern Ontario their homes. Today, one out of two Hungarian-Canadians lives in Ontario.

The largest influx of Hungarians into Canada — 37,000 of them — occurred from 1956 to 1957 due to a large uprising in Hungary against the Soviet regime. This last wave contained a wealthier and more educated demographic.

Hungarian-Canadians have preserved their cultural heritage in Canada in a number of ways, such as the publication of several Hungarian newspapers and the establishment of Hungarian schooling at all levels, including a Hungarian studies program at the University of Toronto.

For a brief time during 1909 and 1910, Cowley had its own weekly newspaper, the Chronicle. It reported extensively on the community’s social news and the rural ranching districts, and featured an extensive write-up on resource development and tourism in the South Fork backcountry.

Also prominent in Cowley’s business community was the local branch of the Union Bank of Canada. It began in a small wooden dwelling in 1906, the same year the Cowley was incorporated as a village, and 30 years later was quartered in a two-storey frame structure.

Two hotels adorned Cowley’s pioneer streets. The Alberta, the first to be established, dates back to 1904 or 1905 under the business partnership of Bridget and Mason. Its later manager was Frederick W. Doubt.

It was a three-storey structure with close to 16 rooms on its upper floors. Sadly, the building burned down in January 1910.

Its counterpart was the Cowley Hotel, located on the south side of Railway Avenue.

An eye-catching veranda on its second floor was popular with hotel guests. The hotel’s longtime proprietor was Hugh D. MacMillan and the business often hosted community functions.

The Cowley Hotel, too, unfortunately burned to the ground, its demise dating to February 1929.

Jacqueline Marie (Bechtel) Therriault 1931 – 2017 Jacqueline Marie (Bechtel) Therriault passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Pincher Creek on Jan. 11, 2017, at the age of 85.

Jackie was born on April 15, 1931, in Pincher Creek. She was the third of four daughters born to Eva Eulahia (Ekelund) and John Harvey (Jack) Bechtel of the Spread Eagle foothills near Twin Butte.

Her natural musical talent became apparent at an early age, when she would sit on her daddy’s knee with her hands on his while he played, or pick up on the songs her older sisters were practising for their lessons with her wonderful knack of playing by ear.

She rode her pony Bessie to the one-room Spread Eagle school, then continued her schooling in Pincher Creek, staying in the dorm and later with her dad in their home on Kettles Street. Her pursuit of the joy of music led her on some very interesting journeys, all while helping raise her younger sister, Sally.

Playing in the Twin Butte hall with the family band, the Gloom Busters, at the age of seven, she began a lifelong career of playing for dances and every kind of social gathering in the community. Her sparkling energy showed through and brought much joy to many.

She was a member of the Phil Lethbridge band, the Westwinds, for over 40 years. They travelled many miles together, bringing dance music to a variety of functions all over southern Alberta and into British Columbia.

In 1954 she married Alyre Therriault, and together they raised their four children on the family ranch as well as their home in Pincher Creek.

Teaching music, playing for dances and providing musical entertainment for the community seemed to keep the home busy. She was no ordinary woman — she could be peeling potatoes for supper in the kitchen while a music student was doing their lesson in the music room, and tell them which wrong note they played.

Jackie was also a member of the Roaring Lions (serving as president for one term), the Community Hall board, and the Community Band. Other things she was proud of were helping to start the annual carol festival, and Cowboy Christmas at the United church. She played for 63 of the annual Armistice Day ceremonies, including the one in 2016.

Jackie was a grandma extraordinaire and her nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren were the beneficiaries of this. A great storyteller who loved to tell and play jokes, she made things come alive with the telling.

Jackie is survived by her loving family — daughters Marie (Jim) Cameron, Audrey (Robert) Jackson, Jackie (Frank) Marsh; son Tim (Jan Robertson); grandchildren Scott, Michael, Jenny, Shari (Shaun) Terry, Robyn (Eric) Dressler, Jerett (Kathryn Sinnott), Nicole (Dylan) Prout, Kelsey (Adam) Green, Amber (Ryan Snider) Vogt; great-grandchildren Zinna, Tristan, Tyden, Piper, Payton, Tre, Benjamin, Evelyn, Maddox, Ava, Owen, Aiden and Oliver; and sister Sally (Doug) Connelly.

She was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Alyre, in 2015; her parents, Eva and Jack; and her sisters Inga Marr and Nona Bonertz.

Jackie was thankful to remain in the hospital in Pincher Creek, where she received wonderful care from the staff. They made a difficult journey much more comfortable.

A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Pincher Creek Community Hall (287 Canyon Drive).

Lorraine Nickel Lorraine Nickel of Lethbridge passed away at the Good Samaritan West Highland Centre on Jan. 11, 2017, at the age of 58.

Those left behind to cherish Lorraine’s memory are her father, Stewart Douglas; daughter Yvonne and granddaughter Bailey; daughter LeeAnne (Jeff); and her siblings: Glenn, Linda, Lyle, Cheryl, Alan and their families.

A celebration of Lorraine’s life was held at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Lethbridge on Jan. 16.

Brenda Helen (Macdonald) Tracey 1961 – 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brenda Helen Tracey. After a very long, courageous fight, she succumbed to her illness on Jan. 9, 2017, surrounded by her husband and two of her children.

Brenda was born in Kamloops, B.C., on Nov. 4, 1961. Throughout her life she lived in many places in British Columbia, as well as in Thunder Bay, Ont., Fort McMurray and Coleman. She had countless friends from everywhere she lived and she will be missed by them all.

Brenda’s life was her family. She was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, and loved them unconditionally. Brenda loved to laugh and her smile lit up any room she entered.

She also possessed insurmountable courage, strength and determination. There has never been a fighter like Brenda; she shocked even her medical teams with her resolve to live. She was a vibrant, caring, loving woman who will remain in our hearts forever.

Brenda is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, Jim Tracey of Coleman; four children, Jesse Lendrum of Thunder Bay, Jonah Lendrum of Fairview, Alta., Kylie Lendrum of Coleman and Tyler Tracey of Coleman; two beloved grandchildren, Jaidyn and Elyza Lendrum; her sister Elaine Macdonald; as well as several nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.

She was predeceased by her parents, Doug and Bonnie Macdonald, and by her sisters Cheryl Macdonald and Barbara Tessman, along with grandparents, aunts and uncles.

The memorial service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on Jan. 14, 2017, with Rev. Andrea Brennan officiating.
