Whether it was tossing a frying pan, skijoring, taking in a fun run, building snow sculptures, enjoying a warm fire on a cold day, dining on hotdogs and hot chocolate, choosing the perfect pottery bowl to hold your chili, or decking oneself out in ’70s threads, there was something fun for all ages at Crowsnest CanDo’s Wintervention. These and many more activities kept the spirit of family fun in high gear all weekend in Crowsnest Pass.

Inaugural Pole and Spur a smashing success

The Kananaskis Rodeo Association promised a mash-up of rednecks, horses and ski bums in promoting the Pole and Spur — and they delivered just that on Saturday.

The new skijoring event was launched during weekend Wintervention festivities in Crowsnest Pass and drew an estimated 350 spectators.

There were thrills and spills as riders on horseback towed their skiing partners around a course that included three jumps and obstacles to navigate.

There was a positive vibe in the air and KRA director Sacha Anderson was thrilled by the “super exciting action.”

Speeds were high as riders urged their horses into a gallop, there were acrobatics and daring by the skiers, and great tunes played in the background as teams tackled the track.

Horse and skier were connected only by a length of rope attached to the saddle horn and held onto for dear life by the skier as they raced for best time on the course.

Penalty seconds were added for missed jumps and pylons or gates. For a qualifying time, the skier needed to cross the finish line on at least one ski, in an upright position and with rope in hand. These rules proved a challenge for some teams.

Cheers from the crowd encouraged all who attempted the course.

It was a bumpy ride for some and competition

was fierce.

There were several wipeouts, with the worst resulting in a broken leg for skier Mallorie Friesen.

She proved to be a good sport, with a smile on her face as she was assisted to the emergency vehicle.

Organizers hoped for 20 teams and were pleased to have 31 pairings come out.

“We wanted enough to make a good show, but not too many to do a good job,” says Sacha.

After the first run, teams were split into two divisions to compete for the $3,275 purse.

Grand champions Garet Drake (rider) and Ryan Linderman (skier) went home with bragging rights and $983 in prize money.

Brothers Cooper (rider) and Shane Trotz (skier) placed second in the first division, winning $590.

Teamed with his father, Joe Trotz (rider), Shane also placed third to earn another $393.

Chance Bohmer entered the maximum number of times in the event, riding two different horses and skiing twice as well.

In the second division, Chance placed first skiing behind Dixie Edge for a $655 prize, and second pulling Sam Edge for another $393.

Coming in third were Jesse Loree on horseback and Alex Redford on skis for a prize of $262.

With a prize on the line for best costume, some teams were decked out in grand attire. Pam Houze and Teyel Strandquist took top honours for their Viking outfits.

Participants paid an entry fee of $25 per team and KRA topped up the pot with an additional $2,500 raised through sponsorship.

High prize money made the event particularly attractive.

“We were pretty happy with how everything went,” Sacha says. “We have a list of ideas to make it better and bigger.”

Making sure the course was safe was challenging due to recent freezing and melting, and Sacha says the KRA crew spent a lot of time and money on the course.

While the sport of skijoring isn’t new, an organized race in the area is.

Sacha was pleased with the way things came together and with community support on all levels.

Chris Matthews, executive director of Crowsnest Museum, shared a Lethbridge Herald clipping from Nov. 10, 1927. Fourteen inches of snow had fallen over the weekend, and the unnamed correspondent shared this tidbit: “Some local boys have invented a new sport — skijoring behind a car, which belongs to one of them. This greatly surpasses being towed by a horse, in their opinion, and they have been having an exciting time since the snow came.”

With the positive reception the Pole and Spur received both from participants and spectators, odds are the event will grow significantly next year, opening up the possibility of a two-day event and a large draw to Wintervention, which benefits the community as a whole.

50-50 tickets on sale to support Ellie’s ride

This Saturday, members of the Pincher Creek Elks hope to see you join them at the Legion for a draw that will see winners on both sides.

The clubs and other volunteers have been selling 50-50 tickets, which are on sale until Saturday at a cost of $5 each. The winner has a chance to win up to $5,000, with an equal amount going toward a van purchased in December for Ellie Weishaar and her family.

The Elks have been actively fundraising to pay for the van, which is equipped with a wheelchair

ramp to assist Ellie’s parents, Lachlan Rempel and Kirk Weishaar in moving the youngster.

Funding the van has become a community effort, with other service clubs and organizations providing financial assistance.

The van was presented to Kirk and Lachlan at the Angels Within Us annual fundraiser. With the means to finance the van and look after an immediate need, the group was happy to help.

With ongoing fundraising by the Elks and others, Angels will be repaid for Ellie’s ride.

The Learning Box moves to new location

The doors will open to a new home for the Learning Box in Pincher Creek on Wednesday, as the store celebrates its grand reopening until Saturday.

The business has moved to Ranchland Mall after opening on Main Street in September 2016. Billed as “not your average toy store,” the Learning Box set out to help families make learning fun for children in Pincher Creek and area.

“It’s a different layout and format for the store,” says Brenda Wheaton, co-owner with Rebecca Payjack.

Brenda finds the space cozy, bright and homey.

She also hopes it will be helpful for families for the Learning Box to be closer to Pincher Creek Parent Link Family Centre.

Linda McKinnon, Parent Link executive assistant program coach, is excited about the centre’s new neighbours.

They believe the two will complement each other, with Linda noting that Parent Link provides children with activities while the Learning Box supplies toys.

The Learning Box has also donated items to Parent Link, including toys and a literacy rug, which is bright and has the alphabet on it, Linda says.

The store will be open regular hours this grand reopening week — 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be prize giveaways each day, with names and phone numbers being submitted each day and a winner drawn from the day’s box each evening.

Games, books and various activity kits will serve as the prizes. On Saturday, the draw is for a big basket giveaway, with around $100 worth of prizes, Brenda says.

Since the opening, she has found the community to be supportive of the business, and thrilled at seeing the products.

Rebecca and Brenda have come across a few new lines of products and will be adding them to the store’s selection. It’s an ongoing effort to determine and fulfil people’s needs.

So far, there has been general excitement about the move.

“We hope that the community continues to support us in our new location,” Brenda says.

Photographer captures look of love by employing the ridiculous

On very special days in the lives of many people, Tanya Plonka returns to her hometown in Crowsnest Pass, or travels to Pincher Creek or Waterton from Lethbridge, to capture the moments.

She has run her business, Photography by Tanya Plonka, for years, and is now being recognized for her eye and talent.

“I photograph mostly weddings and a lot of families, so I like conveying how in love people are,” Tanya says.

“Sometimes it’s a lot of work…. We have to really focus on what we’re doing to get those emotions out of people.”

Those efforts are appreciated, as numerous fans and friends voted in the Lethbridge Sun Times Best of the Best contest. It includes a category for best photographer in Lethbridge.

Tanya shared the news last week that she’d won.

Those who went to school with Tanya knew her as the brainy student who excelled in many subjects, like math and science. At the same time, she took photos for the high school yearbook.

She went to the University of Lethbridge for website design, and after a year decided to focus on photography. After graduating in 2006, she launched her business in 2008.

“I try to keep it natural looking, and make sure the people in the photos have fun,” she says. “I like picking bold backgrounds.”

Ensuring her subjects are having fun is a trick she has developed over time. Originally, Tanya dictated poses, but eventually discovered that a touch of the ridiculous gets better results.

She and her husband and second shooter, Cameron Aldous, often set up subjects so they can interact with each other. When people do something awkward together, they start to laugh or draw closer.

Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Waterton can provide ideal settings. The landscape, including the mountains, provides a variety of backgrounds.

The Lethbridge Sun Times opened the Best of the Best vote in January, giving readers the opportunity to vote once each day of the month.

She informed past clients about the vote, and posted about it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Word of mouth also helped.

“It is an honour that I have so many past clients who said they voted for me all the time,” she says.

“It really means a lot.”

Throw a lifeline to the Oldman The crushing and erosive pace of unrelenting, ever-accelerating off-highway vehicle landscape degradation in the headwaters of the Oldman watershed must be stopped today. I’ve delivered this message to government ministries and managers of Alberta’s public lands for more than 30 years.

What’s happened during the past three decades?

The pace of watershed destruction has snowballed.

Watershed health has nosedived.

Today, the public land that surrounds me, scarred and bleeding, can no longer tolerate more damage. It cries for battlefield triage.

I live on a thrust-faulted, topographically tortured Crown of the Continent landscape. Here in the headwaters of the Oldman, land-use planning is in progress. Meaningful change must occur.

Beyond my front door, the waterways, degraded in a wholesale way by decades of OHV abuses and other forms of maltreatment, are muddy, choked with sediment. They’re failing to sustain Alberta’s native trout.

I shed tears every time I revisit old — once treasured — haunts in the headwaters of the Oldman.

I’ve witnessed watershed and ecological losses there that are nothing short of staggering.

Today, as a general rule of conduct, I avoid the once-cherished public lands in my backyard to find, far from home, the peace, tranquility and landscape integrity that, not long ago, were avail-

able at my doorstep.

Almost 90 per cent of Albertans — they send a strong and unequivocal message — want more wilderness lands protected from development and damage.

I read, recently, words written by Gary Clark, president of the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad. He reported living in Crowsnest Pass for five years. In other words, Mr. Clark arrived after the Oldman’s waterways had already been severed by thousands — literally thousands — of OHV stream crossings, and after native trout — identified species-at-risk — were found living on only a small fraction of their former range.

Think about that for a long minute.

I step forward armed with the belief that meaningful headwaters restoration can occur, and I do it with the vision that future generations can experience, here in the storied birthplace of the Oldman, a brand of watershed health and integrity that OHV advocate Gary Clark has never seen.

It’s time for everyone to step into the mud. It’s time for everyone to find truth, accept responsibility, and pursue — and contribute to — a responsible course of corrective action.

Stand tall, Alberta. Join me. Throw a lifeline to the Oldman.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robison The dog ate my homework.

This expression used to make me snicker. Some of my music students even tried the excuse on me when they didn’t have their theory assignments finished.

Sure, I thought to myself.

That was before I had dogs living in my house.

My daughter is away and I have care of her critters right now — two cats and two dogs.

Bear is the baby of the bunch. He is a six-monthold husky-shepherd cross. Not only am I not used to dogs, I’m not accustomed to big ones.

Bear is not only big, he’s bad. He’s a puppy.

For the most part we’ve been getting along quite well, but I’ve determined that his name should be changed to Shredder.

It’s not his fault.

I was the one who left the receipt for office supplies on my desk where he could reach it and shred it. Presenting the pieces to our bookkeeper in a baggie was actually kind of funny.

I also have a tendency to leave my backpack unzipped, so it’s no wonder he shredded the information I brought home for payroll and my notes from three interviews. I accept full responsibility for this.

Anything he can reach, the young pup shreds.

At first I was annoyed by it, but today I was able to laugh when I showed off the bite marks he had left in my daytimer.

The next time I hear an excuse of a dog eating homework, I just might believe it.

Celebrate Alberta Provincial Police history Crowsnest Historical Society/Crowsnest Museum invites you to an event the society is hosting to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Alberta Provincial Police, as part of its APP barracks building (Legends of Prohibition) project.

The event takes place this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre, located at 7801 18th Ave. in Coleman.

Sean Moir, the collection manager from the Royal Alberta Museum, is the guest speaker. Sean did his master’s thesis on the APP. Following his presentation, there will be a reception and the opportunity to tour progress on the restoration of the APP barracks building,

located next door to the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre.

The Alberta Provincial Police Barracks Building Restoration Project will see the historic building restored and will feature a major exhibit to tell the story of the APP; the Prohibition era; the shooting of Const. Lawson; the trial, sentencing and hanging of Emilio Picariello and Florence Losandro; and local Crowsnest Pass police history.

It is planned to have the project completed and officially opened on the Canada Day weekend to coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday, July 1.

Enhanced labour and delivery room officially opening in Pincher Creek

Gail and Alistair DesMoulins hosted a Robbie Burns supper in Coleman in honour of the bard’s birthday in January. Alistair is Scottish, and arranged a full traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties (potatoes and turnips) and, of course, a good supply of single malt Scotch for about 20 invited guests. Live music was provided by Deb Goldstein and friends, and a number of guests recited a good selection of Robbie Burns poetry.

It was a great, fun experience for everyone and they promised to do it again next year, bigger and better.

All are invited to the Pincher Creek Health Centre on March 7 to see the latest miracles they’ve worked, with help from the Windy Slopes Health Foundation.

The latest Windy Slopes crusade has borne fruit, with the hospital celebrating the grand opening of the improved labour-delivery suite.

“It’s important for people to see what their money that they’re donating is going to,” says Karen Andrew, Windy Slopes administrator.

Others may simply be interested in seeing what the foundation does and what work has been done in the health centre.

“The Windy Slopes Foundation needs to be commended for their dedication and hard work for their part in improving the health care and the experiences for those people accessing care at the Pincher Creek Health Centre,” says site manager Jordan Koch.

The grand opening will be at 6:30 p.m. If there are no patients in the labour-delivery suite, the grand opening will be held in that room, says Windy Slopes chairwoman Donna Schauerte.

There will be “short and sweet” speeches, one from a Windy Slopes representative, dedicated to thanking Shell Canada for its financial support of the project.

Karen hopes Rod Sinclair from Shell Waterton Complex will attend and say a few words.

The foundation will also welcome Teri Myhre, a senior operating officer from Alberta Health Services, to speak.

There will be cupcakes, coffee and tea, with a definite baby theme, Karen says.

The improvements being showcased include

new beds and lighting. She thanks the Hillsview Ladies Club and Spring Point Community Society for each giving $500 for buying a headlamp, giving doctors portable lighting.

Jordan says the two new beds will be more comfortable for patients and satisfy revised health standards.

A new sleeper chair will enable people to sleep over at the hospital. Two Massimo monitors will be able to track the oxygen and pulse in a newborn baby with precision.

The Neopuff is an addition giving respiratory support to the baby, he says.

The foundation has been working on the labour-delivery project for around 18 months, Karen says. The 2015 Trees of Hope campaign supported this and other projects.

That campaign received a spectacular kickstart when Shell donated $25,000.

Rod Sinclair, community liaison officer for Shell Waterton Complex, said the grant was made through the social investment budget, which supports the community’s health, education and environment.

The 2016 Trees of Hope campaign also partially supported the project.

Maggie Olson, vice-chairwoman of the foundation, said the project was launched in response to rising maternity numbers.

Jordan elaborates that there is an average of 100 births at the Pincher Creek Health Centre each year, and that number is rising.

He anticipates a few more changes in the labour and delivery room, including some painting and welcoming esthetic changes, and reiterates thanks to the foundation and the community.

Wildfire risk assessment and mitigation report released for Pincher Creek area

Although the land is damp right now, wildfire season isn’t far away — and in years without a lot of snow, the risk is ever-present. That’s why Chief Dave Cox of Pincher Creek Emergency Services jumped at the opportunity to make the region a little more FireSmart, through a grant offered by the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta.

“I submitted an expression of interest for our entire municipality — the MD of Pincher Creek and the town of Pincher Creek,” says Chief Cox. The application was successful, and a specialized consulting company was hired to create a wildfire risk report, complete with a strategy to reduce the risk.

“I know from my history that urban interface fires have been identified as an issue even prior to 2003, which was our first big exposure with the Lost Creek fire,” the chief says. “So, when the funds became available to do this project, basically with a 100 per cent grant, I really felt we had the chance to do something positive for our community.”

The resulting Pincher Creek Wildfire Mitigation Strategy assesses the risk throughout the region where wildlands meet agricultural and residential development, including the towns, villages, and tourist developments in the area.

environment, but also higher risk areas like communities adjacent to the railway tracks, where we know we can have fire starts,” says Chief Cox. “Our fire threat in southern Alberta is a little different in that we can have major fires 12 months a year, depending on our winter. We actually have a higher hazard, generally speaking, in the fall and winter — if we have an open, dry winter — than we do in the summertime.”

The MD of Pincher Creek is diverse in landscapes and land uses. Potential forest fires and grass fires — combined with tourism, protected parks, rural subdivisions and forest-based communities — mean that Pincher Creek Emergency Services must be ready to respond to virtually any situation with a moment’s notice.

“When people think of wildland fires, they imagine forests. But the reality is that in the MD of Pincher Creek we have forest and grassland, and we have people living, working and playing throughout the entire area,” Chief Cox says.

“The strategy is developed to identify potential hazards, and with that, how we help people mitigate the risks on their properties. There are new, standardized procedures to reduce this risk through a program called FireSmart Canada. We actually know this system works, and we want to give people the opportunity to learn about their wildfire risk, and what they can do to reduce that risk to

their property, their livestock and even their lives.”

“Eventually,” he says, “we want to be in a position to provide on-site visits from our department to do assessments for residents who request that service.”

“There are proven tools such as landscaping and fuel removal that really improve the odds that your buildings will survive a wildfire. This report has provided an in-depth analysis of the highest-risk areas, and FireSmart Canada provides the tools to make a difference.”

Five open houses will be held throughout the region, and the public is encouraged to attend and learn about their specific fire risk, and what they can do to reduce it.

On March 14, open houses will be held at Lundbreck Community Hall from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and at Coalfields School at Beaver Mines from 6 to 9 p.m.

March 15 sessions will be at the Twin Butte Hall from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., and at the Heritage Inn in Pincher Creek from 6 to 9 p.m.

The final open house will be held at Summerview Hall, located at Heritage Acres, on March 16 from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

A local look back

BY FARLEY WUTH, CURATOR OF KOOTENAI BROWN PIONEER VILLAGE The history of the Prairies is filled with tales chronicling the old rural post offices. These institutions were community centres that allowed isolated localities of a century ago to keep in touch with the outside world. Such was the case with the post office at Fishburn, which had a rural history of nearly half a century.

Fishburn pioneers worked hard for a rural post office. It dated back to 1894, and was one of the first to be established in this area. Only Pincher Creek’s, established in 1884, and North Fork’s, inaugurated in 1892, predated the one at Fishburn.

Closer to home, post offices at Ewelme and Spring Ridge were not established until 1905 and 1909 respectively.

Agitation for a post office at Fishburn dominated the local scene during 1893 and 1894.

Farmers and homesteaders had been pouring into the area, taking advantage of the prime agricultural conditions. These hardy pioneers sorely felt the need for a post office, the distance of 15 or so miles to Pincher Creek being too far to travel to pick up mail.

In 1893, locals signed a widely circulated petition requesting that dominion authorities establish this much-needed service. This was a failed initial attempt. In the words of the Macleod Gazette, the request appeared to have been “pigeon-holed as nothing further was heard concerning it.”

A year later, a second petition seemed to have a more positive impact. Much to the joy of this agricultural locality, the sought-after post office was officially established on Nov. 1, 1894.

The postmasters came from pioneer families.

Originally, the post office was established on Sec. 28, Twp. 5, Range 28, West of the 4th Meridian.

Its postmaster was Harris Garlough, who homesteaded on the southwest quarter of this section.

Garlough was very active in the community,

also serving on the board of directors for the Fishburn School District. He resigned his position with the post office as of July 15, 1901, having moved to the Cypress Hills.

His replacement was James Ward, who also took over the Garlough homestead. Born in England in 1844, Ward was a maternal ancestor of the Hardy family. He was postmaster until his resignation in April 1908. James and his wife, the former Hephzibah Hale, moved that spring to Burnaby, B.C. James Russell served briefly as the third Fishburn postmaster. Little is known of this frontiersman except that he held the position until his resignation in mid August 1909.

Russell was followed by Arthur L. Sanders, who also was a relative of Col. James Ward. His dominion appointment lasted nearly five years, till his resignation effective May 11, 1914. The family had arrived in the Fishburn district in 1903 and also operated a thriving store as well as the telephone switchboard. They too eventually moved to the west coast.

The final postmaster at Fishburn was local pioneer Richard A.H. Wittkopf (1864-1945).

Appointed in August 1914, he held the position for a grand total of 28 years, by far the longest tenure.

A well-respected blacksmith by trade, Wittkopf arrived in Pincher Creek shortly after 1886, and by 1910 had moved to the Fishburn district, where he also established a farm.

Upon taking over the post office, Wittkopf and his family also operated the district’s telephone exchange and well-patronized general store. The premises in which these were housed continued to

Czerny, singer-songwriter Basia Bulat and physicist Leon Katz are some of the better-known Polish Canadians to have influenced our national identity in the last 50 or so years.

But with over a million Canadians claiming full or partial Polish heritage, the full scope of the community’s cultural influence has been tremendous across diverse spheres, including business, education, politics, entertainment, the arts, science and athletics.

The very first Pole to call Canada home did so as early as 1752, but substantial immigration only started in 1854. In the beginning, the Polish community consisted mainly of homesteaders who settled the Prairies, building their homes in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

educated, and tended to flock towards urban centres. From the end of the Second World War onward, Ontario became the province of choice for more than half of all new immigrants.

Today, one out of five Polish Canadians lives in Toronto. Substantial communities can also be found in Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary and Montreal. In the 1930s, Poles in Canada began to form social clubs to preserve their customs and traditions, and today more than 250 such organizations continue to operate across the country.

Part-time Polish language education is available in various towns and cities, and more than 200,000 Canadians claim Polish as their mother tongue.

There’s also an active Polish press in Canada, including one daily newspaper, one semi-weekly and numerous other smaller publications.

This combined venture thrived for nearly 2½ years, but disaster struck around 8 o’clock one Saturday evening in November 1916. As the store was being closed for the evening, an oil lamp used for lighting was accidently dropped on the hot stove, resulting in an explosion that quickly engulfed the entire frontier structure in flames.

The Wittkopfs, with the aid of Forest Blackburn, were able to remove the postal equipment, telephone books and accounts, and a small amount of the store’s goods before everything else burned to rubble. Other neighbours, seeing the flames, arrived too late to help with much other than the salvage operations.

Fortunately, the postal service at Fishburn survived for more than another generation. Richard and Jessie Wittkopf soon arranged for new housing for the post office, and Richard continued his twice-weekly mail service throughout the district. During the 1920s and 1930s this postal hub was highly regarded in this thriving rural settlement.

The phone exchange, however, did not survive. The telephone company’s trouble man quickly had Circuit No. 4, which serviced the Fishburn district, connected with that of the town of Pincher Creek.

Much to the disappointment of Fishburn pioneers, their beloved post office closed permanently on Aug. 31, 1942. Fishburnites had been very pleased with the local icon’s nearly half-century of service, but Ottawa officials implied that there had been less business volume than warranted continued service. The rural courier from Twin Butte was to offer continued postal services to the area.

Reports in the Sept. 3, 1942, issue of the Pincher Creek Echo lamented the post office closure, noting that a number of Fishburn businesses and community endeavours — including the store, butcher shop, blacksmith shop, telephone exchange and hall — had all gone by the wayside.

Many of these closures, unfortunately, were due to the changing times.

On the bright side, locals appreciated that the country school continued in operation for more than two more decades, and the church continues to dot the prairie landscape.

The work of the area’s pioneers ensured that even in changing times, this rural community, like many others, would have a bright future for many generations to come.

Naloxone can be an important tool in fight against addition

The news cycle these days has been filled with stories of accidental overdoses of fentanyl, or the more potent carfentanil. The numbers are so staggering that states of emergency have been declared in areas of Vancouver, where hospitals have actually had trouble maintaining their supplies of the antidote naloxone.

This is unprecedented and speaks to a larger breakdown of our health-care system when it comes to the treatment and support of those with addictions and mental health conditions.

What makes this crisis particularly alarming is the lack of discrimination in the individuals this has affected — from the habitual user with a long and complicated history, to the young 23-year-old who occasionally experiments and happened upon a bad hit.

These people are mothers, brothers, sons and daughters, and could just as easily be someone close to you.

They do not go looking for these lethal drugs. They think they are taking a hit of something they are familiar with, but the coroner’s report makes it glaringly apparent that they had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

As a bystander, you may feel helpless, especially if you know of someone who uses, or may be at risk of using, illicit drugs. Try being honest with them. Acknowledge their use and let them know of your concern regarding the uncertainty of what they could be taking.

If they are willing to accept help, talk to your family doctor or another health-care provider about different treatment options. There are a number of options that can be individualized to best meet a person’s needs.

However, if treatment isn’t an option right now, or if your friend or loved one isn’t in a place to talk about recovery, consider discussing having a naloxone kit available to use. Naloxone is the antidote to a narcotic overdose and may give the person enough time to get the emergency medical help needed to survive.

Alberta Health Services has a take-home naloxone kit program available through various sites across the province, such as family physician clinics and pharmacies.

When given during a suspected drug overdose, naloxone may be able to reverse the effects long enough for emergency services to take over.

Potential or current users may receive a kit, along with education on its use and recognizing the signs and symptoms of an overdose. Go to www.albertahealthservices.ca for more information, including where you can receive a free naloxone kit.

Naloxone won’t cure the mental and physical struggles of addiction, but it may give your friend or loved one another chance to get the help they need.

1950 – 2017

Tracy was born in Guisborough, England, on Aug. 21, 1965. She was the first child of Derek and Pauline Breeze. In 1971 she, along with her parents and her brother, Dean, moved to Canada and settled in Pincher Creek.

Tracy was a very active child and a bit of a tomboy. She participated in a variety of different sports; in particular, she enjoyed figure skating.

She grew into a beautiful young lady and after high school she became a dental assistant. This was a career she thoroughly enjoyed.

In 1986 she married high school sweetheart Frank Jenkins and moved to the ranch, where she remained until her passing on Feb. 23, 2017.

She loved the ranching lifestyle, the livestock, and the people involved in the way of life. She was determined to master the cowboy trades and took great pride in her horses and her gear.

She quickly became one of the handiest cowgirls around, something she was very proud of. On the hardest days with the toughest weather, she would often say, “So how do you like this cowboy life?” and follow it up with a big smile.

She was most proud of her children — two daughters, Dana Herr (CoBie) and Colby (Riley Roy); and one son, Ryley (Amanda Higginbotham). She was also blessed with one granddaughter, Reata Rae Herr, who was absolutely the light of her life.

She loved all of her children and always said that she had six kids, not just the three that were born to her. Nothing she ever did in her life gave her more joy than being a mother to her children.

She lived life to the fullest and, in the end, it’s not the years in the life that count, it’s the life in the years.

She will be sadly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; her children, Dana, Colby and Ryley; her granddaughter, Reata; her parents, Derek and Pauline Breeze; her brother, Dean (Karla) Breeze; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held March 1, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at Pincher Creek Community Hall.

It is with sadness that we announce that, after a brief battle with cancer, Frank McDonald of Blairmore passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre on Feb. 11, 2017, at the age of 67.

William Frank Commisso McDonald was born in Blairmore on Feb. 10, 1950. He was raised to be a loving person and to appreciate all that life had to offer.

He held fast to those lessons his entire life, and continued to put the needs and feelings of others before his own until the very end.

Frank enjoyed cooking, and was well known as a talented baker and cake decorator. He made friends everywhere he went and was always smiling. All who knew him will miss his kind, cheerful spirit.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his brothers Wayne McDonald, Ray (Joyce) Smith, Clem Smith and Lynn (Bruce) Tyres; 16 nieces and nephews; 35 great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Lexi McDonald; his stepbrother Harold K. Smith; and his niece Cheryl Smith.

With respect for Frank’s wishes, there will be a celebration of life at a later date.

Trevor Bryan Hall 1970 – 2017

Trevor Bryan Hall, beloved fiancé of Cindy Hillman, passed away suddenly on Feb. 16, 2017, at the age of 46.

Besides his loving fiancé, Cindy, Trevor will be lovingly remembered by son Trevor and daughter Megan; stepdaughter Amber (Kevin) Jordan and stepson Chace Wiley; his parents, Laraine and Monte; sisters Tammy (Brad) Glen and Trena (Brent) Copland; sister-in-law Kandus Hall; nephews Colton, Drayden and Jesse; nieces Chelby and Kori; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Trevor was predeceased by his brother, Tory Hall.

Trevor was born in Raymond and moved to Pincher Creek at a young age.

After he finished school, Trevor immediately went to work operating heavy equipment. Trevor was a valued team member of Ledcor and will be greatly missed by his Ledcor family.

A celebration of Trevor’s life was held at the Pincher Creek Community Hall on Feb. 25, 2017.

Burns Robert Thomas passed away on Feb. 15, 2017, at Cloudy Ridge Ranch, surrounded by friends and family.

He was a rider of the plains, an avid reader, a teacher and a good friend. He will be missed.

Burns will be lovingly remembered by his best friend and partner, Lucy Copp; son Robert; stepdaughters Claren, Emma and Sophie; siblings AJ, Jamie, Susan (Michael), Sharan (Don), Shirley Jean, Roberta (Russell); and many other family and friends.

Healthy hearts

Women’s wellness was the focus in Brocket on Feb 14. A workshop gave women the opportunity to share experiences they have encountered in their lifetime, talk about mental and physical health, and socialize with women of all ages. The focus was healthy hearts, giving attendees a chance to learn about cardiovascular disease and diabetes along with many other important healthy heart tips. Over 100 women attended. There were seven presentations along with breakout sessions throughout the day with a chance to win door prizes.

Passtrak athletes record personal and club bests at provincials

topped out at 5.58 metres, which placed him ninth.

Sawyer Sawatzky, also a peewee boy, ran 11.11 seconds in the 60 metres and his long jump measured 3.42 metres. His best event of the meet was the shot put, where he improved by 68 centimetres, out to 6.61 metres, which placed him second out of 24 athletes.

Jack Bailey is in the bantam age group, which includes athletes who are 12 and 13. He ran his 60 metres in 11.25 seconds and cleared one metre in the high jump.

He then recorded a 4.31-metre heave in the shot put.

Paige Richards is in the midget girls division, which includes 14- and 15-yearolds. She was coming off a month of no training, due to an injury as well as wisdom tooth removal, so she was registered in only one event to test her fitness level. The test was very successful as she tied her lifetime best performance in the 60 metres at 8.87 seconds.

Ethan Richards was moved up to the open age group because there weren’t any events offered in his regular age group. Running against the “big guys” allowed him to run the second-fastest 60 metres of his life in 7.54 seconds. He then produced the best long jump of his life at 5.44 metres, which placed him fourth. He then ran the fastest 300-metre race of his life, clocking a 38.91-second result.

By Ritch Braun Eight Passtrak athletes travelled to Edmonton to take part in their provincial indoor track and field championships on Feb. 18 and 19.

Carson Hay competed in the tyke boys age group, for athletes under 10. Running the 60 metres, he recorded a new personal best of 13.48 seconds. He went on to set a new Passtrak club record for his age group in the long jump, where he spanned 2.24 metres. In his final event, the shot put, he again set a new club record with a toss of 2.66 metres.

Rowan Watson was also in the tyke boys group. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life as well, crossing the finish line in 11.13 seconds. He then cleared 2.68 metres in the long jump and heaved the shot put 2.7 metres.

Ashley Watson ran the 60 metres in 11 seconds in the peewee girls division, which includes athletes who are 10 and 11 years old. She then leaped 3.28 metres in the long jump, which set a new Passtrak club record for her age group and earned her fifth place out of the 26 athletes who competed. She finished her competition with a 4.38-metre performance in the shot put.

Keenan Parsons had the same three events as the others and was in the peewee boys group. He ran the fastest 60 metres of his life in 9.78 seconds for seventh place.

For Whispering Winds Village residents, the year began with a flu outbreak, but all are healthier now and looking forward to spring.

We missed our New Year’s party; however, five stayed up and had coffee. It was very quiet but we managed to let the old year out the back door (a tradition) and let the new year in the front door.

Last week we had a crib tournament with seven tables. It was a fun time, and I believe the friends from town enjoyed themselves as we the residents did.

These tournaments are open to the public and we welcome one and all. We usually start at 11 a.m and have lunch at noon, and then are finished by mid afternoon. The next one will be in April, so

look for the posters. We encourage you to preregister.

The big snowstorm made life interesting around here, like everywhere else. We were thankful for our “snow angel,” and several residents pitched in to help him out. This was great.

The countryside, including our beautiful mountains, is so white and sparkly — quite a few photos and paintings.

Our monthly bingos have been a success and we look forward to the next one, when residents from Crestview Lodge as well as the community will join us. It is so nice to get together for an afternoon.

Grade 7 students come in to meet with residents for their Health 7 project. Several residents are taking part and quite enjoy the interaction with the

students.

Our monthly buffets are a hit. We have family and friends join us for an evening of good food and catching up with everyone.

Our monthly birthday celebrations are enjoyed by all — especially the cake!

Last week we had Phil Cann from Crowsnest Pass entertain us with his accordion music. He is a very talented man and we enjoyed his music as well as his interaction with us all.

Onward now to spring? We all hope so, as it seems like this has been a long winter.

Shootin’ the Breeze requires a part-time reporter to cover community stories and events in Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH CO-ORDINATOR Under the direction of the Library Manager, the Outreach Co-ordinator is responsible for: the provision of communitycentred library service; developing relationships and partnerships with the community in order to understand community needs; assist with developing the Plan of Service; prepare grant proposals; and direct service to patrons. Longtime York Creek Lodge employee celebrates retirement

On Friday, York Creek Lodge bid farewell to Susan Demchuk, who has had a presence in Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing for over 35 years.

Susan got started as a cook at the lodge when it was barely finished, and worked her way up to chief operations officer.

“I’ve always loved being around seniors and listening to their stories,” she says.

Residents have told of moving to the area as children, service during war and becoming war brides. Susan’s favourite stories are about their experiences growing up and their families.

She had experience as a cook with a seismic company, and only got started with senior housing when she applied for a job at York Creek Lodge.

She remained a cook for 30 years, and moved up to food services supervisor for three years.

Due to her experience at the lodge, she was offered a management position over three years ago, she says. All of the changes she saw over time gave her an idea of how housekeeping and operations worked.

She describes management as a three-person team with Dee Anna Aubin and Crystal Poty.

As chief operations officer, Susan managed housekeeping, kitchen and maintenance staff, and ensured government regulations were satisfied. The latter turned out to be a surprising amount of work.

Susan didn’t get to interact with the residents much in the kitchen, but she had known many of them since she was a child. Some were her teachers, but at York Creek Lodge they could address each other by first name.

Recently, she was often the first York Creek Lodge staff member seniors dealt with, as they brought applications to her and she gave the first tours.

Interaction with the residents was the best part of her job, and that became more common as chief operations officer. From her office, she could see the seniors playing cards and could tell how their day was going.

Susan recognizes that moving into the lodge requires an adjustment for residents. “It’s a big change from having to go from a house to a small room,” she says. “I strive to keep them comfortable and happy.”

Even with meals, serving 58 residents poses a challenge in determining likes and dislikes.

In retirement, Susan will still be involved with community groups, including Citizens on Patrol and the Bellevue Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

“My biggest thing right now is being able to get up, and have an extra cup of coffee in the morning and not have to worry about getting dressed and getting out to work.”

There are big changes planned for Crowsnest Pass Senior Housing, with a new lodge in Coleman eventually set to replace the one in Blairmore.

Susan has already seen enormous changes at the Blairmore location. It wasn’t finished, as the main kitchen wasn’t ready and they cooked for 11 residents on a four-burner stove for the first six weeks.

In 1980, there was far less personal care and housekeeping. Eventually, staff for personal care doubled.

She believes the plans in the works will be wonderful for the residents, with twice as much space. This will be more suitable for walkers and wheelchairs.

The bus will provide transportation, and Susan believes seniors will be able to walk around the arena.

Moving may be a challenge, but she’s optimistic that this will be easier than the residents living in a building being renovated.
