It included guest speakers, demonstrations and was an excellent avenue for parents to meet new peers while learning how to provide the best care for their children.

Nutrition pilot program set to grow at Canyon School

Reflections on music festival week

By Erin Fairhurst I’ve had the immense pleasure and privilege of sitting in on several sessions of the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival this week, and on more than one occasion I’ve found myself smiling so much that my cheeks actually hurt.

There are so many things that I love about this special week in our community. I love taking in the amazing performances by students who practise hard and are willing to embrace the vulnerability of performing in front of an audience. I love being exposed to the energetic expertise of the talented adjudicators who come to our community to provide mentorship and guidance to our students.

And, of course, I love being entertained all week

long by a range of disciplines — school choral speech, choir, fiddle, guitar, family music, musical theatre, piano … the list goes on and on. There’s so much depth and diversity to the festival that there truly is something for everyone.

What I love most about music festival is the sense of community. I love watching a student and teacher exchange a smile after a performance, or when parents exhale collective sighs of relief after their child performs. I love how, as audience members, we all sit shoulder to shoulder, lean forward in our seats, hold our breath and just hope for the best for whoever is up on the stage.

In those moments, it doesn’t matter who you vote for, or if you’re an Oilers fan or a Flames fan, or what

your opinion is on recreation in the Castle. When one of “our” performers is up on the stage, we all want the same thing — for them to know that whatever happens, they’ll always get a standing ovation from us.

Congratulations to all of the performers this week, and thank you to the adjudicators, teachers, family members, sponsors, volunteers and audience members for supporting this special event. I think we can all agree that music does indeed make the world go round.

Testing the waters with Pinch-o-Crow Creekers

The local paddling club offered an opportunity for people to try their hand at kayaking during the community mass registration night held March 8. Instructors assisted beginners and almost immediately the pool was full of enthusiastic people of all ages. Cynthia Werier has been having fun learning the basics this winter through the club’s Wednesday evening pool program. Avery and Axel Safranka and Arden Reimer were trying kayaking for the first time, but already looked like pros after a short while in the pool. Castle Mountain season extended to April 9 Castle Mountain Resort has experienced exceptional snowfall this season, producing amazing conditions on the slopes from top to bottom.

To the delight of downhill enthusiasts, the ski hill will remain open an extra week, extending the season to April 9.

February’s “snowpocalypse” saw over 110 centimetres of snowfall at the resort over four days and led to lineups on the lifts, despite conditions that kept many off the roads.

Powder days have been proclaimed much of the winter.

Extension of the season is a logical choice. “We’re ecstatic to be able to continue our winter operations for an additional week,” said Brad Brush, general manager of the resort.

“We’re so grateful to all of our guests, particularly our season pass holders who came on board with us again this season. It’s important that we take this opportunity to thank them, and all guests, by keeping the lifts spinning for as long as is feasible.”

As of March 9, Castle Mountain had recorded 796 centimetres of cumulative snowfall. Comparatively, there had been 577 at Sunshine Village, 469 at Lake Louise, 310 at Marmot Basin, 230 at Mt. Norquay and 228 at Nakiska.

Livingstone students will share anti-bullying theme at drama presentation Students of all ages at Livingstone School have been hard at work on a production created by themselves. It is based on the theme of anti-bullying and the students have chosen songs, poems, dialogue, dances and poems that fit in with the concept.

In the performance, there are two narrators that connect the material from the core scene of three girls in high school coping with everyday situations. As a result, it extends out into other scenarios that could affect choices students make and how they handle the outcomes. Eagle researchers celebrate 25 years of citizen science It was March 20, 1992, when Des Allen and Peter Sherrington first noticed golden eagles migrating along a portion of what was to become known as the “eagle highway,” in the Kananaskis Valley close to Mount Lorette.

When this spring’s count started on March 1, it marked the 26th consecutive year for Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation’s eagle count, making it one of the longest-running citizen science projects in the world.

Long-term studies such as the eagle count are invaluable to help wildlife researchers and managers monitor populations and spot trends.

In the last 25 years, observers have spent some 4,535 days (43,000 hours) in the field, counting in

excess of 231,000 migrant raptors, of which 182,000 were golden eagles.

Besides the Hay Meadow (Mount Lorette) site in Kananaskis, observations over the years have taken place at Plateau Mountain, Piitaistakis (Place of the Eagles) in Crowsnest Pass, Beaver Mines/Vicki Ridge, and Steeples near Cranbrook, B.C. This year, counts are being conducted at Hay Meadow (Mount Lorette), Beaver Mines/Vicki Ridge, and Steeples.

On May 28, a special 25th anniversary celebration will be held at the Beaupre Hall near Cochrane.

My Little Corner

There may have been a skiff of snow Tuesday morning, but spring has finally arrived. It’s a season of promise, of growth, of renewal and of transformation. Everything seems to come to life.

I’ve often wondered if we would be more successful with resolutions of change if they were made in spring rather than in January.

Right now I feel motivated to be outside, to move more and to simply do more as the days have longer hours of sunshine.

Do you feel like tackling new projects? It’s a great time to refresh ourselves.

I watched a robin poking around in the backyard this morning. Just two weeks ago there was at least a foot of snow in the same spot.

A good, hard rain is all we need to wash away the grime of winter and to repaint the fresh palette with the bright colours of spring.

Spring brought kids out in droves to the schoolyard when I was a kid.

The merry-go-round had thawed out and we would push it faster and faster until someone lost their grip flew off. Usually that someone was me.

The contraption in the Vincent Massey playground was old and dilapidated and associated with many accidents before its retirement. For some reason the thrill of the merry-go-round drew us to it like moths to a flame.

The landing spot for those who couldn’t hang on tightly enough always seemed to be in the mud.

A few yards away were the swing sets. The rusty chain links squeaked and groaned as you pumped your legs to gain more height. Underneath you was a gigantic mud puddle where dangling feet had worn a deep groove into the earth.

Once you were soaring high with the birds, the next task was to launch yourself from the swing. If you did it just right, you would fly beyond the puddle and land on your feet. My crash landings were usually wet ones.

Grace was not my strong suit.

When it was time for something quieter, but no less competitive, the marbles came out. If you were a cool kid, your marbles came to school in a purple velvet Crown Royal drawstring bag with bright yellow stitching.

These prized collections were guarded carefully. We got down on our bellies to make the perfect shot and gloated when we carried a heavier bag on the walk home.

On windy days we would run through the field with our thin plastic kites.

I did not grow up with Pincher Creek wind — it was a novelty if we could keep our little kites in the air for more than a few minutes at a time.

With cheeks rosy from our schoolyard fun, we would make our way home through the muddy back lane. Challenges were always in the air — who could get themself most stuck in the muck?

I think the bread bags we popped our feet into before pulling on rubber boots were to make the job of sliding into the dreadful things a little easier.

They also came in handy when you found yourself so stuck that you had to leave your boots behind in the mud — you still arrived home with dry feet.

Once upon a time, North America’s East Coast was home to a Dutch colony known as New Netherland. This 17th-century settlement, created to take advantage of the region’s booming fur trade, represents the first group of Dutch people to live on the continent.

While the Dutch were forced to relinquish the colony to British authorities at the end of the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1673, these settlers and their descendants stayed put and played an important role in the development of colonial America.

After the end of Dutch colonization in North America, the vast majority of immigrants from the Netherlands chose to settle in the American frontier to capitalize on the area’s rapid development. However, the supply of affordable land in the region quickly dried up, and by the 1880s an increasing number of Dutch immigrants and Dutch Americans turned to Canada for a more promising future.

Over the next few decades (until the start of the Great War), the Canadian Prairies saw a steady flow of

new residents from the Netherlands who came to work on the railways or start their own farms. At the dawn of the 20th century, the largest concentration of Dutch people in Canada was in and around Winnipeg.

After the Second World War, tens of thousands of Dutch people fled their devastated homeland and came to Canada to lay their roots. By the mid 1960s, more than 150,000 Dutch immigrants were living in Canada, mainly in Ontario and the West.

Immigration in the present day still gravitates toward these historic bastions.

While Canada and the Netherlands both share many of the same societal values — openness, liberalism and collectivism, for instance — the more than 1.2 million Canadians with Dutch ancestry have a rich heritage of their own to add to our collective cultural patchwork.

Neysa Comin lived her life to the fullest with compassion and grace, but on March 15, 2017, she was called to be with the Lord while at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre in Blairmore. She was blessed with almost 102 years of life.

Neysa was born in Hope, B.C., on April 15, 1915, to proud parents Walenty and Catherine Godek.

From humble beginnings, Neysa experienced many childhood joys and overcame many trials of a time of war and economic depression. She learned to appreciate all that she had rather than yearn for what she had not. Neysa needed to leave school by Grade 8 to help provide for her family.

In 1931 she married Sylvio Comin and they raised their family with care and devotion. She enjoyed nurturing her flower garden, cooking and baking, sewing and tending to the needs of others.

At the age of 45, Neysa overcame her education barrier and completed her education as a nurse’s aide, gaining employment at the local hospital and clinics.

She was a hard-working, determined and self-reliant lady who made countless sacrifices over the years for the welfare of others.

Dan George Kuftinoff Sr., 59, of Lundbreck, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2017, at the Pincher Creek hospital.

Dan was born Aug. 8, 1957, in Lethbridge to the late Jack Kuftinoff and Helen Tollen. He was the youngest of three children. Dan grew up in Crowsnest Pass and moved in his mid 20s to Lundbreck, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Dan’s hard work ethic and devotion to his job were evident early on as he gained employment at Coleman Collieries at the young age of 15. From there, Dan and his brother started their own trucking company for a few years, and then he went on to work for Drain Bros. Construction, CP Railway and Dwyer Construction. He later went to work at Line Creek for 12 years and, lastly, worked at Southwest Concrete Products for 10 years until his well-deserved retirement in 2016.

Dan was the most dependable and meticulous employee one could ever ask for. He was always the first person at work and the last person to leave, and he seldom missed a day of work. He took tremendous pride in all that he did.

Dan was a devoted father and “papa.” He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures with his family and friends, and loved nothing more than heading out to the boat club for a camping trip or sitting by the fire in the backyard. He looked forward to those early mornings he spent hunting and spotting with his son, the various construction projects they tackled together, and barbecuing with him.

In recent years, he enjoyed the summer nights watching his grandson ride his dirt bike, teaching him how to mow the lawn, and watching him at skating practice. Dan never missed an opportunity to visit and play with his grandson, and he loved more than anything to spoil him rotten.

Dan was beyond generous and kind-hearted and would rarely show up for a visit empty-handed. He was never one to sit still for too long and, even on his days off, could be found tinkering with something out in his yard, gathering firewood or tending to his lawn.

In their time spent with him, he instilled in his children and grandchild the virtues of honesty, responsibility, integrity and the value of a hard day’s work. He was the kind of person that people strive to be; one who truly helps people and does good deeds out of the kindness in his heart and not for the sake of being noticed.

On July 26, 2008, he married his beloved wife, Susan Sohm, after being together for 12 years. In her, he found a caring, devoted and loving companion. They found great joy in each other’s company and made many lasting memories together. Sue helped him find out how much he truly did love to travel, and over the years they went on several vacations together, as well as with other family members and friends.

On the rare occasion that Dan did find time to relax, it was often times that he spent with Sue enjoying the many activities that she was always planning for them. She brought great comfort and peace to his life and he was grateful for the love they shared.

During this past year of illness, Dan’s courage and bravery never faltered. We are all so thankful for the memories we shared and for the chance to say goodbye. He will remain forever in our hearts.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife, Susan Kuftinoff of Lundbreck; his children Dan (Dakoda) Kuftinoff of Burmis and Cody Sohm of Edmonton; his sister, Connie (Allen) Delawski of Coleman, and his brother, Nick Kuftinoff of Coleman; his grandchild, Mikka Kuftinoff of Burmis; his nieces, Lisa Karasz of Coleman, Lindsey (Scott) Kuftinoff-Drennan of Kamloops, B.C, Jackie Kuftinoff of Lethbridge, and his nephew, Eric (Amy) Karasz of Coleman; as well as other extended family and countless friends that he made throughout his lifetime.

Dan was predeceased by his father, Jack Kuftinoff; his mother, Helen Mannion; and his son Gary Kuftinoff.

A celebration of Dan’s life was held on March 16, 2017, at the Cowley Community Hall.
