Outstanding volunteers receive Order of Crowsnest Pass

By Erin Fairhurst John Clarke is well known throughout Crowsnest Pass for the long hours he puts in as a dedicated Fish and Wildlife officer, as well as the equally long hours he puts in as a volunteer with the Crowsnest Pass BearSmart Association. And now, he’ll also be known as the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Order of Crowsnest Pass award.

“I really like this community, and the people,” says John, who has lived in Crowsnest Pass for over 18 years. “I’ve raised my kids here. That’s why I volunteer as much as I do — to be a respected part of the community.”

John’s work with Crowsnest Pass BearSmart stems from a natural partnership between his role as district Fish and Wildlife officer and his personal commitment and passion for public safety and the well-being of local wildlife.

“I don’t have a life,” he says, only half-joking. “I have a really hard time turning off my phone. If I take a day off, I need to leave town.”

In addition to responding to wildlife calls and bear sightings in town, John spends many of his volunteer hours providing educational presentations at local schools and events.

“That’s a highlight for me — reaching children and making connections in the community,” he says.

In fact, John has done so many BearSmart presentations throughout the community, he says he’s already gone through a generation of kids.

“It’s neat seeing teenagers who remember me from when they were five years old,” he says.

While John says he’s incredibly honoured to receive the Order of Crowsnest Pass, he also credits the BearSmart volunteers that he works with regularly.

“I have a really awesome team,” he says. “The whole group works very hard.”

In addition to the BearSmart volunteers, John says, much of the program’s success is also owed to the municipality and local businesses for getting on board — such as CNP Waste, which recently refurbished dumpsters within the community to meet bear-proof standards.

So what advice does this year’s Order of Crowsnest recipient have for prospective volunteers?

“People often think they don’t have time to volunteer, but it’s worth the time,” John says. “Volunteering is a release from the same old, same old and it’s a great way to meet people, gain friendships and get exposed to new opportunities. I’ve seen first-hand how it can change lives for the better.”

By Erin Fairhurst By all accounts, Erin Cnossen is your average teenager. She chats excitedly about her upcoming graduation from Livingstone School in Lundbreck, and is involved in school sports such as lacrosse and volleyball. In her spare time she enjoys snowboarding at the local hill and she’s recently taken up running.

But unlike most average teens, Erin spends her weekends actively on call as one of the youngest members of Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue.

“I’m not allowed to go to calls on school nights,” she says, “but on weekends I’ll go to everything.”

Erin says she became involved with Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue “basically as soon as I turned 16,” two years ago. “I couldn’t wait.”

Erin’s dad, Mark, is also an active member, and though he encouraged Erin to sign-up, she was already eager to volunteer anyways.

“I wanted to do it, because I like helping people,” she says.

For many, volunteering is an opportunity to network or to bolster a resume — but for Erin, the simple act of helping out in her community is enough.

“Helping people is fun,” she says simply, “and it makes me feel better about myself too.”

These days, Erin has a lot to feel happy about. She was recently recognized with the Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award. The award is given annually to youths aged 12 to 18 and recognizes exceptional achievements in volunteering. ”I had no idea,” Erin says of the award. “I didn’t see it coming.”

She says that she’s pleased with the recognition and that her parents, Mark and Rachel, who were at the awards dinner, were also “pretty excited.”

In addition to the hours she devotes to Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue, Erin has also volunteered at Donna’s Daycare and at community events such as the Sinister 7 Ultra, where she’s donned her quad helmet and helped to flag the 100 mile course, and the Full Moon in June Adventure Race, where she’s manned remote checkpoints with her family.

Soon she’ll be broadening her horizons with a trip to Costa Rica through the International Volunteer HQ program. After going through the application process, Erin was selected to go to Costa Rica as part of a turtle conservation project near San Jose.

“We’ll be helping the turtles get back to the water,” she says with a smile, adding that IVHQ appealed to her because of the opportunity to travel and to help others at the same time.

After Costa Rica, Erin will be planning another trip — this time to Edmonton, where she’ll be pursuing her post-secondary education in exercise science.

As part of her award, Erin received a $1,000 scholarship, and she says she’ll be putting it to good use.

“I want to become a personal trainer,” she says, “and the scholarship will go towards that education.”

Be FireSmart: preventing wildfires in Pincher Creek and surrounding area

By Tyler Ryan On March 28, a fire advisory for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek went into effect, along with nine other firerelated advisories springing up throughout Alberta. The affected area stretches through Twin Butte, Brocket, Beaver Mines and northwest along Highway 22.

According to Chief David Cox of Pincher Creek Emergency Services, the fire risk over the winter was lower due to factors like a higher-than-normal snow load, but given that the weather has warmed up and melted some snow cover, the situation has changed in the last couple of weeks.

“The possibility of wildfire changes so dramatically because, right now, what we’ve got is a lot of cured grass and it’s available because there’s no snow cover, and there’s really no green grass in it to modify its fire behaviour,” Chief Cox said.

According to FireSmart Canada, there are various landscaping techniques that property owners can use to protect their homes or businesses from wildfires.

First, owners should strive to plant fireresistant plants around the property that have the following characteristics: — Moist, supple leaves — Little dead wood and tendency not to accumulate dead material — Water-like sap with little or no odour — Low amount of sap or resin material Avoid plants that contain fine, dry or dead material within the plant and have a gummy or resinous sap. Stems, branches or leaves that contain volatile components should also be avoided.

For example, pampas grass, broom grasses, holly and juniper are more flammable than other plants and should be avoided if possible. Instead, opt for fire-resistant grasses that are native to Alberta, such as Rocky Mountain fescue, common yarrow or white clover.

Also, FireSmart guidelines suggest that property owners should be cautious with the type of mulch used in the garden; plant-based mulches can ignite with a single ember or errant cigarette butt.

Instead, consider using gravel or rock mulches to reduce fire risks.

According to Chief Cox, there are other things that people should do in order to reduce fire risks, such as mowing and watering in order to keep grass green, because greener grass tends to be more fire-resistant.

On top of this, he has some advice for people who are renovating or building new properties.

“Think about FireSmart prior to new construction, because there are different materials out there that will help your building be more resistant to fire,” he said. For example, using fireproof roofing, possibly metal or asphalt shingles as opposed to cedar-shake shingles. Instead of using wood sidings, you would use something like hardboard that is more fire-resistant, or stucco.”

He also said that people should avoid piling their firewood under decks, and enclosing their decks, to ensure that dry litter can’t accumulate in the dry areas underneath.

Rod Sinclair, chief liaison officer working with the Shell-Waterton Complex, also has some advice for anyone spending time out in the wilderness.

Citing the Lost Creek Fire in 2003 that is believed to have been human-started, he made a point that people need to always be conscious of potential hazards and do whatever they can to reduce the potential of an event like a fire to occur.

“It’s the mentality of being prepared not to create the [fire] event, and then also being prepared to make sure that you can keep yourself safe and evacuate effectively and that someone knows where you are in the event that there is [a fire],” he said.

Quality communication is the key to building up awareness around this topic, Mr. Sinclair said, and effective communications between communities, government and emergency services needs to stay strong.

In the event that a fire is reported, Chief Cox estimates that Pincher Creek EMS will arrive on-scene within 20 minutes, but this response time ranges from 10 to 35 minutes depending on factors such as the location, travel time and severity of the blaze.

“That’s very much an average,” he said, “because if we were responding close to Pincher Creek, we’re there within 10 minutes. But if we’re down in Waterton Park, for example, which is the extreme south end of our area, or on the north side of the Old Man River on Highway 22, we may be 35 minutes before we get there.”

Chief Cox stressed that there are three fire halls

that co-respond to calls to ensure that the jurisdiction they take care of is covered. When one unit responds, a back-up/second response unit will also be sent to provide assistance.The three halls are located in Pincher Creek, Lundbreck and Beaver Mines.

Finally, Chief Cox wants to assure people that if they have any questions or concerns on how to stay FireSmart, Pincher Creek EMS is more than willing to be there for them.

“If you’re uncertain of what your potential is, we will come and have a look at it for you,” Chief Cox said. “All you have to do is stop into the fire hall and ask us, and we’ll make the effort to come and have a look at anybody’s [property] and help them out.”

National Volunteer Week runs from April 23 to 29 this year. To coincide with Pincher Creek’s volunteer appreciation luncheon, our volunteer issue is April 19.

There are three age categories: youth (17 years and under), adult (18 to 59 years) and senior (60-plus years).

Remembering the Battle of Vimy Ridge

“It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then ... that in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.”

— Brig.-Gen. Alexander Ross On April 9, 2017, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, commemorative ceremonies will be held both in our nation’s capital and in France.

While not the most strategically important battle won by the Canadian Corps in the First World War, it’s certainly a defining one. In fact, if there’s a single moment in Canadian history in which our identity as an independent nation solidified, the victory at Vimy Ridge might well be it.

On that fateful day in 1917, Canadian troops succeeded in securing the German-occupied ridge for the Allies after several failed attempts by the French. However, what really marks the battle as a turning point in our nation’s history is that it was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force jointly participated in a battle.

Troops from all over the country fought together.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought on Easter Monday in wind, snow and sleet, with the first

assault troops advancing up the slope in side-byside formation at 5:30 a.m.

The success of the Canadian combatants can be attributed to meticulous planning, powerful artillery support and extensive training. However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that acts of personal bravery were also paramount.

According to war historian Tim Cook, there were “countless acts of sacrifice, as Canadians single-handedly charged machine-gun nests or forced the surrender of Germans in protective dugouts.”

There were over 10,000 casualties in the battle, with 3,598 fatalities.

Several years after the war was won, France allotted to Canada 107 hectares of land atop the former battleground to be used as a park and war memorial. Unveiled in 1936, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial is engraved with the names of the 11,285 Canadians who were fatally wounded in France during the First World War and who have no other known marked grave.

This important beacon of Canadian achievement and unity also decorates the back of our $20 bill.

Three dozen students of Matthew Halton High School leave for Europe Friday, where they will become part of history while visiting Vimy, France, on the 100th anniversary of one of the pivotal battles of the First World War. This past Friday the students gathered at Cenotaph Park. Led by teacher Greg Freer, they reflected on the sacrifice of those who fought and those who died. The school trip includes stops at other historic places including the Auschwitz concentration camp and Anne Frank’s home. The Vimy centennial offers a glimpse into Canada’s place in world history few will have the opportunity to experience.

Run, jump, play!

Monkey Moves at Monster is a free program for preschoolers in Pincher Creek, provided by Brighter Futures, EC Coalition, Parent Link and Monster Fitness. It takes place every Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Monster. There is ample opportunity for children to run, jump and play during the indoor gym program. A local look back Vimy Ridge impact on Crowsnest Pass

BY CHRIS MATTHEWS, CURATOR OF CROWSNEST PASS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES As the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge approaches, we look back to the victory that most associate with ushering Canada onto the world’s stage, or even as the birth of our nation.

The impact of Vimy and its legacy in Canada and abroad cannot be disregarded.

While we can understand how the outcome of the battle changed our nation, we cannot fathom what it was like to be there.

Take a moment to remember, and read the words of Alex Easton, who wrote his family about what happened from April 9 to 12, 1917.

Coleman Bulletin, May 25, 1917: The following is part of a letter recently received from Pte. Alex Easton by his family here. Alex has been wounded in both legs since this was written.

“Just a few lines to let you know I am well, and hoping they will find you both the same. I just got home since last Sunday. I have been all week in what is supposed to have been the greatest battle of the war [Vimy Ridge], and I was right in the thickest of it. We went over the top of the trenches twice, and my, it was horrible. The bullets were thicker than drops of rain in a storm.

How one got through the like of that is nothing less than a miracle. We never got a wink of sleep for five days. We were in shell holes all the time, and one night it snowed

about six inches. We were wet through and covered with mud from head to feet. It was simply horrible. But then we have the consolation of knowing that we won and chased the Germans back about four miles, and they are still going.

“There was not a piece of earth big enough to put your foot on that had not been turned upside down several times by the large shells, and the noise was simply deafening. Our battalion loss was very small in comparison to the risk they ran.

We have just received a letter of congratulations from the general on the splendid work we did. I consider myself lucky that I came through without a scratch, when men were falling all around me. You remember how we used to think that it was impossible for the German losses to be so large and ours so small, but now I know for a fact that it is so. Our shell fire from the artillery was so great that it was impossible for a man to live through it. I will never forget the battles that started on Easter Monday morning.

The English papers are full of the good work of the Canadians, and they deserve it. I was near dead when I got home at one o’clock Saturday. It was an eight or nine mile walk, and if it had not been for the Y.M.C.A. giving us hot tea and biscuits I don’t think we ever would have got back.”

Canada’s Syrian community

CongratulationsOld-time Class of 2014!Paul Anka may be the most crooner famous Canadian of Syrian descent, but many other Pincher Creek Credit Union members of this ethnic community have made their mark on our collective identity over the years.

The late producer and manager René Angélil, Liberal MP Omar Alghabra, businessman and CEO Jack Kachkar, professional wrestler Rami Sebei and film director Ruba Nadda are just a few Syrian-Canadians who have made impressive strides in their spheres of influence.

Syrians first started to come to Canada near the end of the 19th century, and by 1912 over 5,000 had settled in cities and towns across the country. This first group of immigrants was made up mainly of peddlers, but a substantial number also became active in the mining and lumber industries.

A shift in Canada’s immigration policies slowed down the influx of new arrivals to a near halt until further changes were made in 1955. A second steady

wave of immigration followed this mid-century policy change, and as of the 2011 National Household Survey, 40,840 Canadians of Syrian descent resided on Canadian soil. Six years later, this number has nearly doubled.

Beginning in 2015, a large number of Syrian refugees were brought to Canada in response to the war and devastation occurring in their home country. In early 2017, the total number of privately sponsored and government-assisted Syrian refugees was 40,081.

Though this new group of Syrian-Canadians has yet to fully acclimatize within their new home, many have already begun making a positive impact in their communities. For example, new Syrian Canadians came together in solidarity to raise funds and offer support during the Fort McMurray wildfire that forced thousands out of their homes in 2016.

April is National Oral Health Month

Gilbert Roy Eagleson 1939 – 2017 Gilbert Roy Eagleson of Fort MacLeod passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on March 30, 2017, at the age of 78.

He will be sadly missed by son Tim, daughter Bonnie and nephew Ronnie (Penny); son-in-law Michael; grandchildren CJ, Ricky, Stephanie, Darlene, Aaron and Josh; and great-grandkids.

Also, his many friends, his little companion, Mitsy, and his friend Barb.

He was predeceased by his parents, Art and Faye; sister Loretta; daughter Debbie; and friend Fern.

Gilbert was born March 19, 1939, in Lethbridge, and moved to Fort MacLeod around the age of five when his parents bought a farm south of Fort MacLeod.

He married Bev Butler on July 19, 1958, and three months later had a severe accident and was hospitalized for 100 days. The following year, his daughter Debbie was born, with Tim and Bonnie to follow.

After his recovery, he worked with CPR, continued farming with his dad, worked as a car salesmen for Scougalls and purchased the laundromat on Main Street in Fort MacLeod. During his retirement, he drove gravel truck for O’Sullivans.

Gilbert enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, keeping his vehicles shiny and dust-free, and spending time with his family and friends. In his early 20s, he was in the battery and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Gilbert always enjoyed helping anyone he could; he was only a phone call away.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Fort Macleod Community Hall, located at 301 25th St. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, PO Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 4K7; or to the Fort Macleod Handi-Bus Association, PO Box 881, Fort Macleod, AB, T0L 0Z0.

Earl Edmond McKenna, CD 1930 – 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl McKenna, CD, formerly of Hillcrest Mines, on March 23, 2017, at the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

He was called to be with our Lord at the age of 86.

Earl was born in Lethbridge on Nov. 17, 1930, to proud parents William and Elizabeth McKenna. Along with his brothers, he was raised to have an incredible work ethic, a strong sense of duty and commitment to family. He applied these lessons to every facet of his life, especially as he proudly served his country in the 93rd Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery.

Over the years, Earl lived in numerous places — including Foremost, Alta.; Bow Island, Alta.; Fort Macleod, Alta.; and Boswell, B.C. — before settling in Crowsnest Pass.

Earl’s civic pride and commitment to country and community was evident through his active involvement with Cadet Services Canada, the Fort Macleod Lions, Elks and Knights of Columbus, as well as through his lifetime membership to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19, Bellevue.

In his free time, Earl enjoying reading, usually history books, fishing and shooting. He satisfied his adventurous side with activities such as scuba diving, and his talent as a craftsman was demonstrated in his beautiful woodworking projects and intricate model ships.

Earl was also well known as a great

storyteller, and his status as a “collector extraordinaire” was indisputable once you saw his amazing collections — “The Greatest Screwdriver Collection in History” to name but one!

Earl was a loyal, strong, kind man who will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his beloved wife, Betty McKenna; his devoted sons, Brian (Darlene) McKenna, Kevin (Faye) McKenna and Darrell (Melinda) McKenna; his treasured grandchildren Jain (Craig) McKenna, Randi (Geoff) Eseltine, Jillian (Shawn) Hoogstraten, Nikki McKenna and Jesse McKenna; his dear brother Eugene McKenna; as well as his extended family and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Elizabeth McKenna; his father-in-law, Harry Becker; his motherin-law, Rose Becker; his grandson Jeffree McKenna; his sister, Elizabeth; and his brothers James, Gilbert, William “Bud,” Hughie, Neil, Roy, Ronald and Bob. The memorial mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (13126 21st Ave., Blairmore) with Father Ben Marino and Father Sylvano as celebrants.

Teeth Teeth fall into FOUR BROAD CATEGORIES

Human adults have 32 teeth, but very few individuals will develop functional wisdom teeth (the four last molars, which usually require removal).

Festival of the Stars 2017 Presented by Turning Pointe Dance Studio

Turning Pointe Dance Studio dancers delighted their audience with two shows at Bellevue’s MDM Centre on Saturday. The performances featured solos, duets, trios, a quartet and group pieces choreographed by teachers Tara Groves, Christina Samson and Kandis Span-Howells. Tori Wakaluk choreographed one of her own dances as well. A love of dance was evident in every number — from peppy steps and humorous portrayals to words, music and motion combined in deep meaning.
