Ski school soars through first winter on the slopes

By Auralea Boldt Austin Harrison says the best part of ski school — is skiing.

“This was the first year our son was excited about school,” says Teri Harrison.

Austin was one of the first 25 students to attend the Livingstone Ski Academy, a program that began last fall in Lundbreck.

A new venture, the academy is a part of Livingstone School and Livingstone Range School District, with collaboration and coaching from Castle Mountain Resort.

The academy is the brainchild of Chad Jensen, principal of Livingstone School, and Chad Kuzyk, director of learning and innovation for the school division.

They later brought in Jason Clifton as the ski academy director. From there, the three continued to develop the program.

Mr. Jensen says the first year has gone well — considering the scale of the program.

“There’s always going to be bumps in the road,” he says. “Our focus was on delivering a solid program in the first year and learning from things. We are taking a lot of feedback. There are some tweaks moving into Year 2.”

The ski academy encompasses the educational philosophy of Livingstone School, where a personalized approach and whole-child development is emphasized.

“Livingstone School is very supportive of creative scheduling and they have a fantastic arts program, which was why we moved my daughter there in Grade 7,” says Teri.

Madi Harrison, now in Grade 10, is a competitive dancer.

Teri says teachers and staff were supportive of Madi’s dance. They helped her to catch up when she was away at competitions, and she was able to use dance towards her physical-education credit.

Teri and husband Vern had planned to enrol their son, Austin, in Grade 7. But when they heard

about the ski academy, they were one of the first families to sign up. Austin, in Grade 6 this year, is a very active child who has never particularly enjoyed school.

“You sit at your desk, you’re learning in a classroom,” Teri says. “Especially for younger boys, I find that can be challenging. This program addressed that.”

Skiing skills are an obvious part of the program, but the kids learn other things like teamwork, leadership, time management, overcoming adversity and giving back to the community — with a focus on setting and reaching goals.

“There’s a visual picture of how things progress,” Teri says. “You have a child who can barely get down, going down the mountain. My son, who was already a good skier, now doing spread eagles.

They actually get to see what the work does, physical change in their strength, and what hard work is actually doing.”

SKI SCHOOL, continued from page 2 Students who start out in the recreational program can move to more competitive programming as their abilities increase — as long as they meet standards for safety.

While a ski school is an idea that may sound expensive, the public school aims to remain inclusive.

At $1,800 a year, the tuition is economical when you factor in perks such as a yearly ski pass and professional ski coaching.

Starting next year, families will even be able to use a payment plan.

“Having a public program like this is very rare,” says Mr. Jensen.

The students range in age from Grade 5 to Grade 12. Unlike a traditional classroom, they are grouped together based on their skill levels, not their ages.

Teri believes that mixing ages is a welcome addition to Austin’s school experience, a great way to create mentorship opportunities and develop relationships between different ages.

As the students finish up this ski season, they will move to outdoor activities such as kayaking and mountain biking.

“It is such a great opportunity,” Teri says, “and it’s so close, to be able to go to do something like this that is 11 kilometres from my home.”

Next year’s schedule will likely include more time for outdoor activities in the shoulder season. It could also include attaining certifications and an environmental component, and even ski hill management may be explored in the future.

The program will also swell to 48 students, including some international students, and will introduce eight or nine snowboarders.

Mr. Jensen says they also plan to expand the “high school side of things,” as there is a large cohort moving up they want to make sure they provide opportunities for.

Livingstone Ski School plans to continue its partnership with Castle Mountain.

“They bent over backwards for the kids, and made it such a welcoming environment,” says Teri.

The future vision for the academy remains the same: an inclusive program that provides opportunities to learn outside of the classroom, based upon a holistic and personal approach to education that takes advantage of resources in the area.

All 25 students plan to be back for next year.

HAS students celebrate Earth Day with EarthPlay

By Erin Fairhurst Students at Horace Allen School in Coleman were all smiles Friday as they took part in the school’s first EarthPlay Day. Parents were asked to drop off “loose parts” for students to use to create a series of pop-up playgrounds in the school field and at nearby Flummerfelt Park.

Tarps, lumber, tires, plastic pails and rope were just a few of the materials that made their way into the students’ hands as they let their imaginations run wild.

“It’s just incredible,” said school principal Elaine

Garner, as she surveyed the hubbub of activity with a big smile on her face. “Their creativity just blows me away. This is turning out to be a really wonderful day.”

The objective of EarthPlay is to allow children to use their creativity, leadership and team-building skills in self-directed, outdoor free play. By using eco-friendly materials to create their outdoor playgrounds, students are also exposed to the value in reusing and recycling.

kids. Activities like EarthPlay allow them to stretch their legs — and their imaginations — while enjoying some quality time with Mother Nature.

Parents volunteered as “rangers” for EarthPlay Day and could be seen wearing brightly coloured vests as they supervised the activities — though it turned out that not much supervision was needed as the kids played, created and co-operated with one another.

“It’s just so fun,” said Grade 3 student Emma Eggert, who didn’t seem fazed by the lack of spring weather. “I like playing in the snow.”

My Little Corner My first trip to Pincher Creek nine years ago included a day at Waterton.

We had passed through southwestern Alberta on family trips to British Columbia, but that was the first time I actually set foot in the mountains.

It was very different from the forests and lakes I had grown up with in northeastern Saskatchewan.

I was fascinated by the ruggedness, the scenery and the wildlife.

Each return visit included a trip to the park.

After crossing the provincial border to move here, Waterton became a place I spent time whenever I could.

One calm day we travelled to the far end of Upper Waterton Lake by boat. Motorized watercraft are now banned from Waterton due to the threat of invasive mussels.

I’m glad to have the memories of that experience.

To have all this in our backyard is something my friends back home can’t fathom.

It’s been a peaceful place of serenity for me on one hand and a place of adventure on the other.

On Saturday I attended an open house where Parks Canada and FWBA Architects presented three design options for their new visitor information centre.

This is a controversial issue, and people I spoke with had all heard different things — both good and bad.

The common thread was one of dissatisfaction. I spoke with residents, weekenders, first-time visitors and folks like myself who simply love the park.

The common thread was that no one was satisfied with the location.

Some are choosing to make the best of the situation and others are still carrying a bitter taste over Parks Canada’s decision to locate the centre within the townsite.

There was much discussion about the potential loss of the playground, spray park, tennis courts and park, but there are other concerns as well.

The building designs all seemed too sleek and modern to me — that’s just a personal opinion. In my mind, they don’t match the character of the park and what it means to me.

I wasn’t able to connect with everyone I’d like to chat with in order to prepare a balanced article, so hope to have this ready for next week.

Studio tour offers unique Mother’s Day activity Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association presents its second annual Mother’s Day self-guided tour of artists’ home studios on May 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. This free event allows the public to enter workspaces and see the art of the artists who live and create work in Crowsnest Pass.

The studio tour will appeal to those who enjoy art and appreciate our diverse local talent. Tour participants may find coffee and treats or wine and cheese offered at various studios, and can set their own pace and choose the studios to visit.

Art represented on the tour includes watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, sculpture, stained glass, collage, visual art, poetry, jewelry, photography, ceramics, encaustic wax, sketching and more.

Artists will be in attendance, and some studios will feature demonstrations and work for sale.

The website www.cnpstudiotour.ca features images, descriptions of artists’ work and media, studio locations and links to individual artists’ websites. The brochure includes photos of artists’ work, maps and addresses.

Studios will be open on Saturday, May 13, and Sunday, May 14 — check the brochure for details. The printed tour brochure is available at our partner locations and a downloadable PDF is available on the website.

The Junction Food Bank

Bridge closure Hewetson Bridge will be closed this Wednesday and will remain closed for about seven days to accommodate completion of this section of upgrades to Pincher Creek’s water distribution system. This is a continuation of upgrades that were started in 2016.

Quilters donate commemorative work

By Erin Fairhurst An important piece of Crowsnest Pass heritage has been preserved in a special quilt created by the local Rag Bag quilting group — and members have donated the product of their handiwork to the Crowsnest Museum in honour of Canada 150 and the special opening of the Alberta Provincial Police Barracks.

The quilt will be raffled off on July 1 and tickets are available at the Crowsnest Museum for $5.

“Everyone who has seen this beautiful quilt has just been amazed,” says Pat Rypien, president of the museum. “Quilts are undervalued and take a lot of real talent. We’re very lucky to have this donation.”

The quilt took about three weeks to complete, with the bulk of the work taking place over two Wednesday evenings. The quilters didn’t work from a specific

design or pattern, and the result is a stunning depiction of a Mountie against the backdrop of a rich array of colour and a Canadian flag.

“That’s what happens when you have a big group of ladies working together,” Linda Petrone says of the group’s accomplishment. As president of the club, Linda says the Rag Bag ladies enjoy using their skills to give back to the community.

“We donate a few quilts a year to different causes,” she says. “We love quilting and we love our community, so it’s a good fit.”

The quilt was presented to the museum during a ceremony at Isabelle Sellon School on April 26.

Pat says 1,000 raffle tickets have been printed, so be sure to get yours before they run out.

Trade show shines spotlight on area businesses

By Auralea Boldt “As a person who has only lived here for four years, I am constantly amazed at the richness of talent in people we have here,” says Ola Crook, Pincher Creek’s chamber of commerce administrator.

The chamber’s annual trade show, now in its seventh year, will be held at the MCC Arena in Pincher Creek this Friday and Saturday.

It is an opportunity for the community to see what local goods and services are on offer, and for vendors to showcase their businesses.

Ola says there will be “something for everyone,” with lots of inspiration for spring and summer ideas.

The show, which has gradually been growing in size, will have about 90 vendors this year, from new home businesses to construction, floral design and not-for-profit organizations.

The show has also been growing in scope and offering. This year there will be vendors from all over Alberta, and from as far away as Saskatchewan.

Admission is free.

This event is important to the chamber of commerce, whose mission is to “create space and opportunity for businesses and people to collaborate and network.”

Ola believes the trade show is a great way for the public to be exposed to new business — and also to “meet the people behind the name.”

The last few years have seen a revitalization of business in the community, with new ventures starting and doing well.

“There are many people returning to Pincher Creek or setting up shop here because they realize the great opportunity this area holds for them,” Ola says.

Ola has a unique perspective when it comes to shopping locally, besides the obvious environmental and economic benefits.

“We need to support the local people that make this area a true treasure to live in,” she says.

“I am certain that there are many more people like me who are still just learning about this place, and this is a great way to get to know some of those

people.”

Canada’s 150th year means free admission to Waterton Lakes National Park, extra traffic local businesses may wish to capitalize on.

“Again, another fantastic opportunity to catch some of that business, and to show visitors what we have to offer,” Ola says.

The show has seen a positive response over social media, where it was widely advertised.

A few booths are still available to vendors, but are expected to be sold soon.

The event will also include a social night for vendors, at the Grill restaurant on Main Street.

The trade show starts at 3 p.m. on Friday and goes until 8 p.m., then starts Saturday at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

“We want to see them all succeed,” says Ola. “Every happy, thriving business is a collective success.”

Faith (Dawn) Robinson 1940 – 2017

On the evening of April 24, 2017, Dawn passed away peacefully, with daughters Errin and Lori and close friends Cheryl Dolan and Chris Davidson by her side, after a short battle with cancer, at the Pincher Creek hospital.

Mom was 76 years young. Dawn will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Errin (Don Turner) Robinson and Lori (Dan) Bonertz; grandchildren Sally Turner, Dexter, Riley and Kassidy Bonertz, and Mikauley and Foxx Doell; and son-in-law Kevin Doell.

Dawn was predeceased by her daughter Denise Doell, her parents and all her siblings.

Dawn grew up in Woodrow, Sask. She was the last of seven children born to Kenneth and Edith MacLeod, until her mother took over care of her oldest brother’s child, Brenda Carmichael.

She attended nursing school at the Calgary General Hospital. After graduating, she went to work in Assiniboia, Sask. This is where she met and married Robert William Robinson. They started their family with Errin, born in 1963. After moving to Calgary, Denise was born in 1967 and Lori in 1969.

Mom and dad divorced in 1977 and maintained a great relationship until dad passed away in 1981.

With nothing holding her back, she packed up her two youngest and moved to Pincher Creek in 1982. Mom continued her nursing career at the Pincher Creek hospital until she retired after 53 years of nursing. She formed many great friendships too numerous to mention; you know who you are.

Mom’s favourite things to do were reading, crossword puzzles, hosting parties on her veranda, going out for dinner at the Swiss Alpine, going for a whisky with Heather Dolan on Sundays — but her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren.

Our mother was the most courageous, hard-working, generous person we know.

Many times in our youth, Mom and Dad took in family members in their time of need.

She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.

A private family celebration of Dawn’s life was held. She was very proud of being an RN, and with this in mind, memorial donations in Dawn’s name may be made directly to the Registered Nurses of Pincher Creek, c/o ATB, PO Box 1600, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

Tess Larson

1939 – 2017

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Tess Larson (neé Kowalchuk) on April 23, 2017, in Pincher Creek, at the age of 77.

Tess was born on Dec. 3, 1939, in Edmore, Sask., to Matt and Lena Kowalchuk. She attended Ashdown School through Grade 8, then lived in town with her grandparents to attend high school, graduating in 1957.

Tess was married to Clifford Larson in October 1961 and they lived in Kelliher, Sask., with their four children — Kim, Laurel, Kris and Doug.

In 1979, Tess moved with her children to Pincher Creek, where she worked for CIBC and in accounting for Charlie Price until 1990, when she moved to Milk River. She worked for Allen at South Country Tire for many years, until she retired for the second or third time.

Tess moved back to Pincher Creek in 2012 to be closer to family during her battle with cancer. That diagnosis did not slow Tess down.

Immediately upon returning to Pincher Creek, she started volunteering at the museum, the library and the hospital, where she also sat on a committee. Tess’s hobbies included gardening, fishing, flying kites, golfing, watching curling and watching the Spruce Meadows equestrian jumping events. She was an avid reader and always had a stack or two of books around the house.

Tess was a member of the Red Hat Society of Lethbridge for seven years. She enjoyed the fun and friendship the group offered. These ladies were very dear to her heart.

For the last two years, Tess’s latest passion and hobby was being a volunteer for Find a Grave. She sometimes travelled great distances from home, with her dear friend Yvonne, taking pictures of thousands of gravesites, to later be registered after the trip. Tess documented 8,800 graves.

Tess made an impact on many lives. She was known for her jokes, whether at the bank or in the halls of the hospital. Everyone will miss her famous “scuffles.” Tess took pride in all things Ukrainian, whether it was making fancy Easter breads and cabbage rolls or sharing Ukrainian history.

Tess was a spirited lady and had a zest for life. She was always willing to lend her help where needed. She will be missed by so many.

Tess is survived by her two sisters, Marge and Ev (Neil); her four children, Kim (Dave), Laurie (Keith), Kris (Chrissy) and Doug; 14 beloved grandchildren, Crystal (Brock), Kaela (Dan), Bridget (Joe), Jenna (Jared), Tom (Sheila), Karie (Justin), Joel (Justin), Jill (Kris), Kirstin (Josh), Lacey, Will, Katelynn, Garrett and Kieran; 12 great-grandchildren, Nolan, Gavin, Brandt, Colby, Tess, Kyle, Adam, Sydnie, Dylan, Ian, Keera and Mallory. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews and many other relatives.

We will be holding a celebration of life on May 6, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Whispering Winds Village (941 Elizabeth St.) in Pincher Creek. We encourage everyone to wear purple as that was her favorite colour.

In lieu of flowers and cards, donations can be made in her name to the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

Spring symphony concert promises fun for the whole family

By Erin Fairhurst Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual spring concert Saturday at 2 p.m at Vertical Church in Pincher Creek (1200 Ken Thornton Blvd., near Tim Hortons), and a special twist will be added to the performance.

A rendition of the children’s symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf will be performed by the symphony and narrated by symphony member Betty Smith.

Written by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev in 1936, Peter and the Wolf is a classic performance piece for many symphonies, and popular amongst all age groups.

Peter and the Wolf tells the tale of a boy who is an adventurer at heart. Determined to prove himself, Peter bravely ventures into a meadow to catch a wolf.

Along the way, he meets several memorable characters — such as a duck, a bird, a cat and, of course, a wolf. Each of the unique characters in the story is represented by different instruments and orchestral themes.

“It’s engaging for everyone on different levels,” says conductor Debbie Goldstein, “including the musicians.”

The concert Saturday will consist of an array of classical, jazz and modern music before a brief intermission. The second half of the concert will be made up entirely of the Peter and the Wolf performance. Guest musicians from the Lethbridge Gold Band, as well as cellist Julie Amundsen of Edmonton, will be joining in for the performance.

Debbie estimates that the whole show will be about 90 minutes and stresses that everyone is welcome and that the atmosphere will be completely childfriendly.

“This is definitely for children, and really for the whole community,” she says.

“Part of the mandate of orchestra is to give back to the community.”

Tickets for the spring concert are $10 per person or $20 for the whole family, and can be purchased at the door.

A second concert, consisting of just the Peter and the Wolf performance, will take place Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Horace Allen School in Coleman, in honour of Music Monday.

Music Monday is a widely recognized event that celebrates school music programs in Canada and all over the world. This concert is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Debbie says the school concert is “an opportunity to provide some outreach to the children, so that they can gain some knowledge of music and of our symphony.”

Volunteers spring-clean Alberta highways Young volunteers will be on the road this Saturday during the annual Highway Cleanup event.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., motorists will see volunteers, wearing bright orange safety vests, collecting garbage along Alberta roads as they raise money for community organizations.

The Highway Cleanup campaign was established as a fundraiser for nonprofit and community organizations and to help clean up provincial highway rights-of-way. Depending on the weather, the event is held each year on the first or second Saturday of May. Last year, the provincial government contributed $974,025 to 622 volunteer organizations as 14,186 volunteers helped clean up more than 12,600 kilometres of Alberta roadways.

Volunteer organizations include 4-H clubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church organizations, Rotary clubs, sports teams and various non-profit groups.

Groups must register with the province as non-profit organizations to participate. Organizations can earn between $55 and $100 per kilometre cleaned. The higher amounts go to groups cleaning highways closer to urban centres, which tend to accumulate more trash.

Albertans over the age of nine are invited to participate in the cleanup. Volunteers must attend a safety-training program and be under adult supervision.

Motorists are asked to slow down, obey signs and be cautious when passing cleanup crews. Participants are asked to be aware, make sure they are visible, and obey all traffic signs.

A local look back Scene of the crime

BY CHRIS MATTHEWS, CURATOR OF CROWSNEST PASS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES Hollywood has turned Prohibition into a romantic episode of the early 20th century, with daring midnight runs across the border and largerthan-life gangsters dallying with good-time girls in speakeasies, while brave policemen risk their lives to catch the bad guys.

The reality of the illegal trade in alcohol came crashing home for three families in Crowsnest Pass on the evening of Sept. 21, 1922.

Earlier in the day, a botched raid had turned into a high-speed chase. The chase ended with Const. Stephen Lawson of the Alberta Provincial Police firing at a fleeing car, wounding young Steve Picariello in the hand.

That evening, Picariello’s father, Emilio, and a friend of the family, Florence Lassandro, pulled up outside the APP Barracks. Const. Lawson came out to speak to them. There was a brief struggle. Shots were fired, and Const. Lawson

lay dying, watched by his nine-yearold daughter.

What happened that night?

Who killed Const.

Lawson? Was it murder, or a tragic accident?

Since the very beginning — American independence came about in 1776 — our neighbours to the south have ventured past our shared border to settle on Canadian soil.

At first, those who arrived were British loyalists. Later, many were black Americans who came by way of the Underground Railroad or who fled during the War of 1812.

But by the turn of the century, Americans who immigrated to Canada were in search of one thing: land. Prior to the First World War, about 750,000 Americans moved to the Prairie provinces, where many acquired acreages and built farms.

In later decades, Americans came to Canada to work in sectors such as our booming oil industry and, more recently, in the tech industry. Draft dodgers during the Vietnam War also commonly came to Canada.

Of all immigrant groups that settle in Canada, Americans bring with them the largest amount of wealth — sometimes three times as much as other groups.

Perhaps because of the many similarities between the countries, American-Canadians never formed as a self-conscious ethnic group.

However, their influence is felt in every sector, and our proximity to the United States has played a large role in shaping nearly every aspect of our cultural identity.

As of the 2011 census, 372,575 claimed full or partial American ancestry. Notable Canadians who trace their lineage back to the U.S. include filmmaker David Cronenberg, musician Neil Young, actor Keanu Reeves, politician Bill White, journalist Patrick Lagacé and poet George Elliott Clarke.

Practise eye safety at home during National Vision Month Most people do not think of eye safety at home, but half of all eye injuries happen in this “safe” place. What’s more, about 90 per cent of all eye injuries could be prevented by wearing proper eye protection.

From cooking and cleaning to mowing the lawn and do-it-yourself home repairs, eye injuries occur every day while performing routine activities around the house. When tackling chores and tasks at home, it’s easy to become complacent about safety precautions.

However, since one-quarter of all eye injuries result in time off work due to their severity, there are some safety tips worth following.

First of all, invest in a pair of CSA-certified safety glasses and use them

around home. They are inexpensive and available at hardware and home building supply stores.

Yard and garden — Wear eye protection. Proper safety eyewear can protect against many risks, including flying dust and debris, and chemical splashes.

Remember, regular corrective lenses or sunglasses won’t do the trick; use CSA-certified safety glasses that fit over your regular glasses.

Always read and follow the instructions or owner’s manual for safe handling of products (such as fertilizers and solvents) and equipment. Keep tools in good condition.

Inspect and remove debris from the lawn before mowing, and from the surface of the snow before blowing. Inspect

walkways and stairs to remove hazards there too.

Wash hands after completing tasks and chores, and before touching your eyes.

Trim all low-hanging branches.

Home improvement — Again, wear eye protection! Screws, nails and hand tools can become projectiles, and power tools can propel tiny chips into the air and into eyes.

Turn off power tools when unprotected bystanders are near, especially young children.

Cleaning and chemicals — Always read and follow manufacturers’ instructions and warning labels when handling chemicals at home, and wash hands thoroughly afterward.

Do not mix cleaning agents. Always point spray nozzles away from you. Store all products, chemicals, and glue out of the reach of children.

Toys and children — Read all warnings and instructions on toys. Avoid toys with sharp or rigid points, shafts, spikes or rods, and dangerous edges. Keep toys intended for older children away from younger children.

Avoid flying toys and projectile-firing toys; be aware of items in playgrounds and play areas that pose potential eye hazards.

Mario Nero Maschio It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mario Nero Maschio, who passed into the arms of our Lord on April 27, 2017, at the age of 87.

Mario, the oldest of five children of Angelo and Pierina Maschio, was born on June 14, 1929, in Loria, Province Treviso, Italy. He worked from the early age of nine until March 15, 2011, at the age of 82, which is truly amazing.

He arrived in Canada in 1950, residing in Bellevue with his aunt, uncle and their family. He worked for West Canadian Collieries driving mine buses. Later he worked for John Ferstay as a mechanic, and then was later employed by Morgan’s Garage until he started his own shop, Mario’s Auto Repair Ltd., in 1970. He also ran another company, Mario Maschio Trucking Ltd., hauling coal for Coleman Collieries for many years.

His life was his beloved garage and his beloved customers that he served. He truly loved his profession — it was his passion. He made countless good friends, too numerous to mention, over the years.

In 1953, Mario married a lovely young lady, Jean Montalbetti, and they started their family when their only child, Wendy Lee, was born.

Mario was very athletic and loved sports. His favourite hockey team was the Montreal Cana-

diens. His athletic passion was bike riding, and he clocked hundreds of miles riding to Fernie, Sparwood, Pincher Creek, Waterton and Lethbridge.

His other love was curling, and he loved to bonspiel, especially at the Bunny.

Mario’s twinkling eyes, contagious smile and zest for life will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Do not ask me to remember, Don’t try to make me understand, Let me rest and know you’re with me, Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I’m confused beyond your concept, I am sad and sick and lost.

All I know is that I need you To be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me, Do not scold or curse or cry.

life are his loving daughter, Wendy Lee (David Beric) Fabro; his grandchildren, Nina Jean (Glen) Ford and David Mario Eugene (Ashley) Fabro; his great-grandchildren, Chyanne Fabro, Michelle Fabro, Jesse Ford, Marco Fabro, Emmalee Ford, Alyson Ford and Hayley Duncan; his sister-in-law Shirley (Wolfe) Montalbetti and family; his brother Ildo (Rosella) Maschio; his sister-in-law Anna Maschio; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Italy — all were special to him; his special friends John Pollice, Fiore Olivieri, Toni and Eva Tzakis of Creston, B.C., Rob Slapak, Remo Quarin, Salim ShahMohammed, Tony Vastenhout and Craig Duncan; and all of his caregivers and friends at the Crowsnest Pass continuing care centre — his “angels.”

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Maschio, on Jan. 9, 2012; his parents, Angelo and Pierina Maschio; his brothers Aldo Maschio and Galliano Maschio; his sister, Emma Zandona; his sister-inlaw Angela Maschio; and his brother-in-law, Ernesto Zandona.

A private service will be held at a later date.
