La Dictée PGL hits snag but students press on

By Tyler Ryan In a quiet room at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, William Johnson Jr. and Sophia Citrigno got ready to take part in La Dictée PGL, an international competition that tests the French-language skills of students from across the planet.

While waiting for La Dictée PGL to start, there was some nervousness coming from Sophia and William, who are in Grade 7 and Grade 8 respectively.

“You don’t really know how much experience everyone else has had with French,” Sophia said. “I don’t even know if we’re competing against people whose first language is French or if it’s their second language like ours.”

During the competition, students transcribe French dictation as accurately as possible in a short span of time. The passage is read three times; the first time, the students don’t write, only listen. During the second and third readings, the students write and polish up their submissions.

The students are then judged on the accuracy of their work and ranked among the hundred or so other international students who are participating.

The students also need to transcribe three sentences of

increasing difficulty but these do not initially count towards the scoring.

In the rare event of a tie, the three sentences are evaluated for accuracy and a winner is determined.

From start to finish, the competition takes about 45 minutes.

There are two categories of participants: francophone students, and students in French immersion. Seventy students in total participated.

French teacher Dominique Plouffe has confidence in Sophia and William, and is proud of them. She says this year was special because it was the first time that students in grades 7 and 8 participated.

“It’s an honour and it’s exciting for our students, and for our school as well, to be connected like this to other students,” Mme. Plouffe says.

“And it’s all for a good cause.“ Mme. Plouffe says the founder of La Dictée PGL, Paul Gérin-Lajoie, wanted to help students in developing

nations through education.

Gérin-Lajoie also wanted to raise awareness among students in developed nations about the challenges that students in developing nations may face.

“There’s a theme every year,” Mme. Plouffe says. “This year, the theme was A World in My Plate, so it was teaching students about where foods come from, and next year’s theme is art.”

Mme. Plouffe adds that the competition gives participants a chance to learn about different cultures and to improve their written skills, and that any money raised during the event is used to help students abroad.

After a global hacking attack happened in early May, the first round of La Dictée PGL was not counted towards the contest.

Another dictation took place on June 1 to make up for it.

Both William and Sophia were ready to take on the dictation for the second time. The theme for the make-up round was Des Réminiscences Odorantes, which roughly translates to How Smells Evoke

Memories.

Unlike the first dictation, which was done electronically with iPads, this round had Mme. Plouffe read out the dictation and both Sophia and William wrote it out manually. The final product was then faxed away for evaluation.

Later in the day, Mme. Plouffe received information regarding the placements of the top three participants. Unfortunately, Sophia and William were not named in the top three. However, they were the only students to participate from Alberta.

The three winners were from Quebec.

Mme. Plouffe is still proud of the students for participating in something prestigious and is happy that they took part in the second round, even though they could have bowed out. She says there will be another contest next year.

“The dictation is well worth the experience,” she says.

Halton students shine at Skills Canada

By Tyler Ryan This spring, students from Matthew Halton High School represented the Pincher Creek school in the Skills Canada competition, testing their abilities in various trades and pitting themselves against students from other schools in the province.

Of the students who competed regionally, four advanced to provincial competitions. Grade 12 student Joel Lewis moved on to nationals, held in Winnipeg, for carpentry. He went on to win gold at nationals.

“Alberta is one of the last trade-oriented provinces left,” says Grade 12 student and provincial competitor Kyle Dyck. “To be competing with the best of the best is kind of crazy.”

Taylor Ewing made it to provincials in culinary arts and her competition focused on cooking a three-course meal.

“For my appetizer, I made ricotta-stuffed ravioli in an alfredo sauce,” Taylor says. Her main course was poached salmon with tomato-rice concasse and vegetables on the side, followed by creme caramel and fruit salsa for dessert.

Grade 12 student Miranda Van Loon took part in the job skills demonstration. Zack Renschler and Sam Noel, both in Grade 9,

were enrolled in the culinary challenge where they had to fry up a burger, but the challenge came with a surprise.

“The twist was that we had a mystery ingredient that we had to incorporate into our burger,” Sam says. When the secret ingredient — banana peppers — was unveiled, the competitors had to be creative when building their dish.

In the welding competition was Colten Teneycke, a Grade 12 student, who was tasked with building a rocket.

Joel placed at the top of the provincial carpentry competition

and this propelled him towards nationals, which took place May 31 to June 3. At both provincials and nationals, he was tasked with building a mini playhouse.

Joel spent 12 hours, over the span of two days, to build the playhouse. However, he spent more time practising with the schematics in the Matthew Halton workshop to build an identical playhouse in preparation for the competition.

“Everyone has been very helpful and supportive,” Joel says.

Music in the Mountains returns for Canada 150

By Erin Fairhurst SpringBreak Flower Farm in Hillcrest is already abloom with the sweet scents of spring, but will soon be ablaze with the wondrous sounds of Music in the Mountains — a special event designed to musically celebrate Canada 150.

Co-ordinator Debbie Goldstein says the project has been in the works for over a year.

Music in the Mountains existed in Crowsnest Pass several years ago and was hosted at Pass Powderkeg. In earlier years, she says, members from the Lethbridge Symphony were invited to play with local musicians in an outdoor event. Naturally, certain factors — like the weather — posed logistical challenges.

After some planning and consideration, Debbie decided the local greenhouse would serve as a perfect venue to revive the event.

“It just seemed like it would be a good fit,” she explains. “The concert will be taking place

According to all of the students, the Skills Canada competition is a very exciting experience and they plan to compete again. There’s also the added pride of competing with other kids from across the province and keeping up with schools that have a much larger presence.

“We’re competing with cities that have millions and millions of dollars to fund these programs, and we’re keeping up with them — or in Joel’s case, beating them,” Kyle says.

“It’s pretty incredible coming from small-town Pincher Creek.”

“There won’t be any classical music,” says Debbie, who will be playing bass with the jazz orchestra.

Both the choir and the orchestra have been rehearsing regularly, and Debbie says all of the musicians are dedicated to producing a high-quality event.

“It’s a big commitment,” she says, adding that some members of the 14-person jazz orchestra live out of town, so the group has travelled as needed for rehearsals.

Guest singers from the Calgary Philharmonic Choir will be joining the local choir, and Debbie says everyone’s hard work is paying off.

“Everything is sounding so good — the band is awesome and the choir is just singing their hearts out,” she says. “The musical quality of this concert will be very high.”

Regardless, the students had some advice for anyone who is interested in competing in the future.

Sam says that in Grade 9 it’s mandatory to take the junior high culinary challenge and that there are no other options for a Grade 9 student. Still, he says, “just getting your foot in the door and seeing all of the different trades and possibilities that you can do is really an experience on its own.”

“Make sure you read your blueprint and just practise,” Colten says. “Once it’s in your memory, it’s hard to lose.”

Joel says his first competition was a bit nerve-racking, but it’s a very rewarding and special experience.

“Just enjoy it,” he says.

Group celebrates 50 years of taking off pounds sensibly

By Auralea Boldt Audrey Stenbeck and Lou Burnham have been friends for 40 years. They met over the shared goal of weight loss, at a TOPS meeting, when Lou moved to Pincher Creek from Dawson City.

They even finish each other’s sentences.

“You can sometimes be really down because you’ve had a bad week, but once you sit around the table with the group, you walk away with a smile,” Lou says.

“And renewed determination,” Audrey adds.

TOPS stands for Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, a non-profit support and education group that promotes sensible weight loss through eating healthy, following the recommendations of the Canadian food pyramid, and exercising regularly.

The women emphasize the support provided by the group.

“The caring feeling that you get when you go there is really great,” Lou says. “I’ve struggled.

The people there care for you personally, and they support you.”

The group was started by housewife Esther S. Manz and her friends in the late 1940s, as a way to provide support to their weight-loss goals. Today there are 170,000 members in 10,000 chapters throughout North America.

On June 15, the Pincher Creek chapter will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The celebration starts at 7 p.m. at the Anglican church hall, and is open to former and current members, as well as the general public.

For newbies, it promises to be an introduction to the local group, as well as a celebration of the achievements of current members.

Local members pay an annual fee of $40, and attend meetings at the Anglican church, which also include a weekly weigh-in from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, followed by the meeting. Your first meeting is free.

Audrey says that knowing she has to get on the scale each week

helps keep her accountable.

The Pincher Creek chapter has 19 members, and five have achieved their goal weight.

Audrey is eight pounds away from her goal.

“It’s hard to lose, hard to maintain, and hard to be overweight,” she says.

The group recently came back from provincial recognition days in Drumheller, where TOPS rewards those that have lost weight.

In 2013, local Pete Rickard was crowned provincial king.

Self-esteem is something that many members struggle with, both women say. They relate it back to the society we live in today.

“When you pick up a magazine, everyone is slim and trim and pretty,” Audrey says.

Lou and Audrey are happy that some of these standards are starting to change, as different body types are making their way into the media.

They also acknowledge the emotional nature of eating.

“We do a pledge before each meeting: I will control my emotions and let my emotions not control me,” Lou says.

Family plays a big role in supporting weight-loss goals for both women. Lou especially credits her husband, family and friends.

Audrey says her two daughters are very into exercise and proper eating, which in turn inspires her.

She has a greenhouse in her backyard where she grows her own produce, and she emphasizes the importance of reading ingredients and eating real food.

Losing weight and keeping it off requires lifelong vigilance, the group recognizes. This knowledge, the community of support, and healthy and realistic goals — are what set TOPS apart.

Most important, Lou and Audrey say, is to make sure to get back on the wagon when you’ve had have a bad week.

Their determination is inspiring.

My Little

CORNER For the past two years, the first weekend of June has been reserved for the annual general meeting, convention and workshops of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.

As in the past two years, the learning and networking opportunities were extensive and Tyler Ryan, Maureen Bevan and I came home with many new ideas.

It is the efforts of the entire Shootin’ the Breeze team that come together in each and every issue of the paper — staff members all hold roles of high importance.

When the end result is an issue that wows us all – each of us can take pride in that.

A Salute to Our Local Firefighters ran last October during Fire Prevention Week and we were very pleased with the result.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner sponsors a yearly award focused on Fire Prevention Week sections produced by Alberta newspapers in three circulation categories.

It was with great pride that I accepted the award Saturday night on behalf of my staff for the best section produced in the under-2,500 category.

We left the banquet with our arms full as the award included a three-foot-by-three-foot reproduction of the section’s front page, along with a box of smoke detectors, a box of carbon

It was also thrilling to have Erin Fairhurst receive a Healthy Communities Journalism Award for her story Service Dog Joins Alexis for a New Beginning.

The judge’s comments read, “Erin Fairhurst’s reporting on Alexis Bohmer and her service dog was a splendid read and exactly the type of positive story about how, despite incredible obstacles, human nature — and in this case with a little help from mankind’s best furry friend — can prevail.”

Way to go, Erin!

As one with no formal education in graphic design, I was humbled to receive third place in the Excellence in Creative Advertising category.

We will proudly hang these achievement awards on the office wall and continue to strive for excellence.

It was great to see the Pincher Creek Echo place second for overall score in the under-1,100 circulation category.

As seen in the right column, the late Gail Sygutek and Buddy Slapak of the Crowsnest Pass Herald were remembered for their service to the newspaper industry.

It’s wonderful to see the work happening in our corner of the province have light shone on it, as awards were also earned by the Fort Macleod Gazette and Claresholm Local Press.

On top of a full day of educational sessions, I

was fortunate to have one-on-one time with Kevin Slimp, an expert in newspaper design. He made suggestions to further enhance the appearance of the Breeze.

The easiest way to test things was to simply incorporate some of the suggestions — which I’m sure you have already noticed in the first few pages of today’s paper.

Most changes are in font usage. It may sound like a simple task to change a base font, create column headings with consistent fonts, not change font size between articles and to use four-column page layouts.

After two long days at the computer, I can say it wasn’t that easy, and there remains work to be done.

As with any change, I’m nervous that none of us will see the final product until Wednesday morning when it arrives from the printer. It’s challenging to make many changes at once, so I’ll ask you to bear with me as we experiment with the recommendations.

Herald owners receive posthumous recognition Former Crowsnest Pass Herald owners Gail Sygutek and Trevor (Buddy) Slapak passed away 15 months apart — Gail in November 2015 and Buddy this past February.

In recognition of their service to the profession, awards were presented posthumously over the weekend at a meeting of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association in Calgary.

Just Jude embarks on adventure

By Auralea Boldt “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade,” says Judy Lane.

“Just Judy,” or “Jst Judy” as her personalized licence plate says, is not one to shy away from life’s challenges.

When she unexpectedly became a widow at the age of 54, Judy stuck to her original plan to become a snowbird after she retired.

That’s how she found herself driving a 24-foot motorhome down a six-lane highway, to Arizona — solo.

She did this for seven winters, before she got bored.

She credits her can-do attitude to her husband, who she says was “an encouraging kind of partner,” especially for the era they lived in.

Judy is a published author, former teacher and current school trustee, who can now add public speaker and storyteller to her resumé.

A few weeks ago, mysterious and intriguing posters started appearing around Pincher Creek asking “What is Judy Lane up to now?”

“There’s always those people you admire that admire you, and the eyebrow raisers that are going, ‘That’s just Judy,’ ” she says.

“My life is my life, and maybe I’ve learned since my husband died, you are here for a reason. To

sit at home and rock in a rocking chair isn’t my reason. I’m blessed with good health so I better get after it while I can.”

“I think everybody has to live and do things their way,” she says. “That’s the other thing I learned from experiencing this early, tragic death — I soon had to become myself.”

Judy invited the community to join her last Thursday evening, for a $10 entry fee, to learn about her next adventure.

As part of the marketing campaign, developed with the assistance of her friend and life coach Mandy Murray, people on Facebook tried to guess what it could be.

Thursday arrives and, having built momentum for the event, Judy takes the stage confidently.

Sipping on a small glass of rosé, she welcomes the crowd of about 35 — the public, press, family and friends.

As she begins to share her personal journey, she removes belongings from a suitcase — a visual metaphor for the stories she unpacks.

She talks candidly about her husband and other close friends who have died. She believes we do not speak frankly or often enough about this subject.

She deals with demons, such as unhappy childhood memories, with humour.

“When you think about your childhood, what was good about it?” she asks.

“What wasn’t good about it?

Does it really matter?”

The crowd roars.

She alludes to addiction battles in her family, and discusses the challenge of being an individual, the nature of faith, Judy Lane explains her new adventure.

NCC volunteers make huge impact Each spring and early summer, as Canada’s migratory species start arriving at their breeding and nesting grounds, the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s conservation volunteers also emerge from their wintering grounds.

This is Canadian Environment Week. In the coming weeks and months, thousands of volunteers of all ages will step up to lend a helping hand in caring for some of Canada’s most important natural places. The efforts of these volunteers will be a game-changer for NCC’s conservation projects.

Since 2007, NCC’s conservation volunteers have been helping protect Canada’s wildlife and natural landscapes by assisting with research and restoration efforts in natural areas across the country.

This includes helping with plant and animal inventories, habitat restoration work and cleanup projects on NCC conservation sites.

Over the past 10 years, 16,083 volunteers have helped us complete an astounding 1,371 community conservation projects. The level of support from volunteers is beyond inspiring.

In celebration of Canadian Environment Week, and the 10th anniversary of our conservation volunteers program, we invite Canadians of all ages to join us in caring for Canada’s natural places.

People can help monitor migratory birds, conduct butterfly surveys, protect nesting habitat for turtles, plant native trees and flowers, build or enhance trails and boardwalks, conduct shoreline cleanups, remove invasive species, build nest boxes and more.

Everyone can play an important role in caring for the environment by signing up for one of our conservation volunteers events, and by encouraging friends, family and co-workers to join them in volunteering for nature.

Caring for nature not only has local benefits, but also supports migratory species such as butterflies, birds and waterfowl that need healthy habitats to breed and forage for food. Canada has 733 wildlife species at risk and, to date,

NCC has protected habitat for more than 180 of them.

This important conservation and ongoing stewardship work on many of our sites is supported through the Natural Areas Conservation Program of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Some of our conservation volunteers travel great distances to participate in events across the country. Last summer, Jean Kendall and her 10-year-old granddaughter, Tanaeya, travelled from northern Ontario to southwestern Saskatchewan for the chance to see rolling hills of prairie grassland at NCC’s Old Man On His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area, and support grassland conservation. They clocked about 2,500 kilometres one way.

No matter the distance travelled — whether a few kilometres or thousands — our conservation volunteers are a force for nature, helping NCC achieve results we might not otherwise accomplish working on our own.

We also invite people to be honorary NCC reporters for the day.

Roving reporters are encouraged to interview fellow conservation volunteers to get to the heart of the story! These events are unique experiences of everyday people making a real difference to conservation. Whether you’re a seasoned reporter or just starting out in writing, we welcome roving reporters in all provinces.

So join us! There are plenty of other opportunities to make a difference for nature in 2017. So far, NCC has more than 60 volunteer events planned across the country, with more to be added throughout the summer.

Small gestures that make a big difference Connecting People to Nature is the theme of this year’s edition of Canadian Environment Week, June 4 to 10. Headed by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the annual observance goes hand in hand with World Environment Day, which Canada had the privilege of hosting Monday in collaboration with the United Nations.

This year, Canadian Environment Week is focused on reminding the public that even the smallest gesture can have a significant impact on protecting biodiversity worldwide. Here are just a few ways you can contribute to a greener future: — Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of letting the tap run until the water is cold enough.

— Use eco-friendly cleaning products.

— Avoid using your remote car starter.

— Print double-sided, and only when absolutely necessary.

— Use public transit, carpooling or active transportation (like walking and bicycling) whenever possible to get to your destination.

— Consume local, seasonal products.

— Recycle anything and everything that can be recycled (paper, electronics, tires, etc.).

— Invest in energy-efficient appliances and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

— Turn down the heat when you’re away from home.

— Donate clothing, toys, decor and other items you no longer need (but are still in good condition) instead of throwing them away.

Pat Stier approved: Tentative creation of the United Conservative Party

By Tyler Ryan The leaders of Alberta’s two major conservative parties have tentatively agreed to merge under one banner — the United Conservative Party.

Brian Jean of the Wildrose party and Jason Kenney of the Progressive Conservatives made the announcement May 18.

Pat Stier — Wildrose MLA for Livingstone-Macleod — says he is very happy with the agreement and pleased that he was given an opportunity to help put it together.

“It was a wonderful situation, and I think it’s going to be historical, frankly,” he says.

Before the UCP becomes a viable option in the 2019 election, 75 per cent of Wildrose members and 50 per cent of PC members need to approve the deal.

The new party would be registered as a society, according to the agreement in principle. Approval from Elections Alberta would be needed, as well as registration as a provincial political party with the chief electoral officer.

Derek Fildebrandt — finance critic and Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks — was recently in the news for his view that former Wildrose MLAs who crossed the floor to join the PCs back in 2014 should not be allowed to run as candidates for the new party.

Mr. Stier — who remained with the Wildrose party during the floor crossings — says that Mr. Fildebrandt was not part of the negotiating team and did not have an active role in discussions about the unification

A gargantuan truck rumbles on my left, complete with a smoke-stack exhaust and a suspension lift kit. It’s not quite a monster truck, but it may have aspirations to be one.

On my right is a Cadillac Escalade with huge rims and tinted windows. I can feel the thunderous bass from the music the owner is playing.

Sandwiched between them is me in my little Mitsubishi Lancer, simmering in the heat and stewing in my own irritation.

I’m running late and I’ve been stuck in traffic for 35 minutes.

This 80-kilometres-per-hour highway on Glenmore Trail has slowed down to a tenth of the speed, when lucky.

I was back in Calgary over the weekend for the annual Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association symposium and awards.

As I stared out into the gridlock, all I could think about was how much I despise sitting in rush hour and that I could probably get out of my car and walk faster than the traffic.

But as I sat in the highway-turned-parking lot, another thought crossed my mind: I’d be able to see my parents after my first month away.

They just got back from a threeweek vacation in the Philippines, so I’d be able to get the scoop from my mother’s homeland too.

Miraculously, I made it to the AWNA awards show with time to spare.

Held at the Grey Eagle Casino and Hotel, the AWNA awards portion celebrated excellence among newspapers that are published weekly.

Shootin’ the Breeze won the top award for the 2016 Fire Prevention Week issue in the circulation of 2,500 and under category.

Mr. Stier supports Mr. Jean’s bid, saying he “has the heart and the qualities that one should certainly hope to have in a leader.”

There are 14 founding principles that the UCP will aim to uphold. Some of them are: — Limited government, including low levels of taxation to help generate economic growth while allowing Albertans to enjoy the fruits of their own labour.

— Fiscal responsibility, including balanced budgets, debt reduction and respect for taxpayers’ money.

— Economic freedom in a market economy, which encourages the creation of wealth through free enterprise, and protection of the right to own, enjoy and exchange property.

— Grassroots democracy, including measures to empower Albertans to hold governments accountable during and between elections.

By the time I got home, my parents had gone to bed so there would be no catch-up that evening.

The following day consisted of a series of workshops. It essentially felt like a weeklong university course crammed into a single day.

There’s no doubt that I learned plenty, but my head felt like mush afterwards.

On my way home, I was a bit shocked at how much things have changed in the short time I’ve been away from Calgary. When I left, the trees were just starting to sprout leaves, but now the trees are full of green.

The daycare close to my home was under construction, but now the building is complete and taking in kids over the summer.

Even the little girl who lives next door, Nola, has grown. She’s still the same happy little chatterbox as I remember, but now it seems like she has 10 times the energy. Her guard dogs — two pugs named Walter and Lebowski — don’t seem to have the energy to keep up with her anymore.

But not all changes have been good.

On Saturday afternoon after the AWNA symposium, my dad sat in his giant La-Z-Boy recliner in our front room. Wrapped on his wrist was a yellow bracelet with all of his personal information. As I sat down on the sofa beside, the bad news came out.

“The doctors told me I may have less than two years,” he said to me.

“That’s not for sure, but just so you know, be prepared.”

Lawrence Ryan has always been a tough man. Raised on a farm in New Brunswick and an Albertan since the mid ’80s, nothing seemed to scare him. From farm boy to CP Rail mechanic to special constable with the RCMP and, finally, accountant, he remains unshakeable.

Even while telling me about his diagnosis, he seemed unfazed.

Until he said, “I’m not looking forward to this surgery. The last time I went in, it felt like they butchered me,” and that said enough in the moment.

It was hard to come back into town after the weekend. Even now, my mind swims into dark places as I put words on paper. But after a late-afternoon phone call on Mon-

day with my mother, I’m told that the surgery went fine.

He had to stay overnight, but it looks like everything has cleared up on that end. As for everything else, there’s not much to do except hope for the best and get the proper medical attention in time.

And prepare, whatever that may mean.

But despite the difficulties, life goes on and there’s no point on dwelling on hypotheticals.

“So it goes,” Kurt Vonnegut wrote in his famous anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Five. Even in the face of mortality, imminent or otherwise, so it goes.

But as it goes, don’t forget those who matter. So I have a bit of homework for you, the reader.

If you can, pick up the phone and call your parents (or anyone that you care about). Go for dinner if possible. Coffee works too.

Let them know you care, whomever it may be. Even a brief moment can mean the world to someone.

So it goes.

You may have noticed that when I mentioned achievement day, I did not mention “sale.” The Multiclub is doing things differently this year. There is still a show, however, our selling style has changed. For a new experience, we are selling our animals privately, with the exception of the scholarship pig.

You can purchase the market hog scholarship pig — which benefits all club members — by auction, after our achievement day, at the Heritage Acres Chuckwagon Cook-Off supper. The scholarship pig should weigh about 275 to 285 pounds.

Chinook 4-H Multiclub members have been really busy preparing for our achievement day. We have six projects this year — mechanics, pheasants, shooting sports, photography, sewing, market hog and market lamb. Each is finishing up and adding final touches in order to show off their projects this Saturday at Heritage Acres, just northeast of Pincher Creek on Secondary Highway 785.

If you would like to join us that day, please do! We will be starting off at the Black Powder Gun Range, a little past Summerview Feedlot, at 1 p.m. for the shooting sports members to show us what they’ve learned this year.

Then things will start up at Heritage Acres at 2 p.m. with the livestock show, where the market hogs and market lambs members will show their animals.

After that, we will see the remaining projects give presentations on what they did this 4-H year. Members will see what has been created in the sewing project, images captured through the lens in the photography project, things revving up in the mechanics projects, and there’s the possibility that we may even see a pheasant chick.

New York City was not the only thriving centre to sport a Waldorf Hotel. Our own western settlement of Pincher Creek hosted a namesake of this fine establishment for close to a generation in the early 1900s.

Substantial immigration to Canada began in the 18th century, with the English coming both directly from Europe and by way of the United States. Those who came from England were motivated by high unemployment rates back home and the offer of free land in Canada. Those who came from the U.S. were predominantly Loyalists looking to rejoin British civilization in the colonies after America achieved independence.

Newcomers settled first in the Atlantic Provinces, and once Britain acquired New France in 1763, Upper Canada (Ontario) also became a hotspot.

Immigration continued well after Confederation. One large wave occurred when the Prairies were opened up. Another mas-

orphaned children (known as the British Home Children) who were given free passage to Canada and then made the wards of various communities. The final large wave occurred after the Second World War. The English were highly influential in establishing many of the legal and governmental institutions that characterize modern-day Canada. Our tradition of representative government is based largely on Britain’s parliamentary system, and our court structure also closely follows the English model. English common law is the basis of Canadian civil law in every province except Quebec.

Today, English Canadians make up the largest ethnic group in Canada, with more than 20 per cent of the population claiming full or partial English ancestry.

fledgling accommodation and tourism industries.

The structure itself long outlasted its stature as a hotel. During the early 1920s, the building temporarily served as Pincher Creek’s hospital and convalescent home for First World War veterans. It later housed the offices, hardware department and lumberyard of the Pincher Creek Co-op before it was torn down in June 1966.

The Waldorf indeed was a substantial building. Two storeys in height, its frontage adorned with a ground-floor porch and a second-floor veranda faced onto Bridge Avenue. The veranda was covered by an extension of the structure’s roof and was surrounded by a substantial wooden railing. Outside was attached

a handcrafted sign, perpendicular to the building and very good for marketing, proudly announcing the Hotel Waldorf [and] Café.

The hotel was a rectangular structure with its length running to the west. The ground floor housed the lobby, dining and billiard rooms, and rear kitchen. Upstairs were rooms where as many as 50 guests could be accommodated.

Customer service was a high priority at the Waldorf. A spring 1909 ad proclaimed the virtues of its dining and accommodation facilities. It offered guests a choice of either European or American plans.

There were special rates for day and monthly boarders. Pioneer hotels found this added to the economic stability of their establishments.

or late lunches” were eagerly sought by visiting pioneers.

Two pool tables were added to the billiard room in 1909. Next door was the Alberta Livery Stable operated by Alfred W. Robbins. The neighbouring businesses came to an arrangement where Waldorf guests could stable their horses in the barn while staying at the hotel. Such services were well appreciated by out-of-town patrons who required these beasts of burden for their transportation needs.

The Waldorf also had a telephone installed in 1909, quite a novelty back then. Its number was 127.

The Waldorf was the only Pincher Creek hotel where no alcoholic beverages were served or consumed.

Being a dry hotel was not without its moral pitfalls. On New Year’s Eve 1917, in the midst of the Prohibition movement, the Alberta Provincial

Police’s Pincher Creek detachment raided the Waldorf and confiscated several bottles of booze. Hotel management was charged and convicted of running a “blind pig,” which meant that they had liquor for sale.

Why the establishment wavered from its no-booze stand has been lost from the pages of history.

Several pioneer names were associated with the Waldorf. An early proprietor, A.A. Kanouse, was connected with the establishment in 1909. Two years later a widow, Mrs. Eva Hartfield, served as its manageress. She and her two young sons — William, born in September 1908, and Thomas, born exactly a year later — resided in the hotel. The 1911 dominion census boldly lists her as running a boarding house, indicative of the nature of work at the Waldorf Hotel.

Hungry students raise money for food bank

Now imagine going to bed on an empty stomach.

At St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, 36 students from grades 6 to 8 experienced this reality by participating in a voluntary 24-hour fast.

Organized by Grade 8 student Neige Kelly, Paige Richards, Megan Sundberg and Genevieve Girard, the fast was held to raise money for the local food bank.

Almost $2,200 was raised and sixth-grader Brayden Kovac raised almost $370 in donations.

Even though all of the students were given breakfast in the morning — bacon, french toast and fruit — many of them realize that there are people in the community who aren’t so lucky.

Neige says that in addition to raising money for the food bank, the fast “provides awareness for the people out there who don’t have enough food.”

Sixth-grader Brayden took part in the 24-hour fast and raised almost $370 for the food bank.

“You don’t exactly see when people are struggling to find food, but we all know that there are people in every community who don’t always have access to a good meal every day,” Megan adds.

Neige says the students opted to raise money for the food bank instead of just accepting food donations because sometimes the items donated to the food bank may not be sufficient.

“Lots of people donate dented cans and unneeded stuff to the food bank,” Neige says. The food bank “can’t use dented cans to give to people, so with the money, we buy Co-op cards and then the food bank can actually buy what they need.”

Echoing Neige is Glenn Elgersma, the manager of the Junction food bank.

“We’re going to use the money to fill the shelves and hampers with good proteins,” Glenn says.

“Things like eggs, milk, tuna, among others.”

The students brought sleeping bags for the fast and stayed overnight at St. Michael’s. They also had a range of activities to keep them busy, like movies throughout the day, karaoke and the video game Just Dance, as well as various games throughout the night.

Adult supervision and support was provided.

Neige, Paige, Megan and Genevieve hope that future students continue with the 24-hour fast to raise money for the food bank.

“If I’m on student council [next year], I definitely want to organize another famine,” Neige says.

According to a report from Junction food bank, a total of 1,841 individuals in seven communities in and around Pincher Creek have accessed the food bank for groceries in 2017 alone. Of those, 1,149 are adults and 692 are children.
