By Tyler Ryan In January, three students travelled over 7,000 kilometres from their families in Germany to their new host families in southern Alberta.

For five months, Gloria Deuter, Julian Krauss and Julia Kausper have called Alberta home. Gloria is in Grade 10 and goes to Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek.

Julia and Julian, both in Grade 9, attend Livingstone School in Lundbreck and also attended Livingstone Ski Academy.

Their stay was made possible by Breidenbach Education, an organization that works with high schools across Canada to give German students the opportunity to study abroad.

The exchange ends in late June, but all three students will be able to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. Julia heads home on July 2, and Gloria on July 3.

Julian’s family is coming to visit Canada and together they plan on travelling through the country.

The students share similar experiences.

They all wanted to live close to the mountains and they share a love for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.

The night before leaving, all three students felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension.

The initial homesickness and worry have since been replaced by adventure and wonder.

The students say that all the people they’ve met along the way have been welcoming and helpful, especially the teachers in Lundbreck and Pincher Creek.

When asked, “If you had the choice, would you rather stay in Canada or go back home?” the answer is the same: torn.

Torn because they want to see their families again but they also want to stay in Canada for a little while longer.

With that in mind, Julian, Julia and Gloria plan to visit again in the future and to keep in contact with their host families and friends in Canada.

Julia Kausper “On the night before I left, I was really excited and scared and I asked my mom and dad, ‘Can we maybe cancel the flight?’ ” On the day of her trip, Julia said her goodbyes at the airport and soon her worries dissolved.

All three students landed at Calgary International Airport at about 8 p.m.

Julia says that after landing, both girls were stopped by airport security and taken for questioning.

“We were a little scared because there were police officers all over the place and we didn’t really know what was going on,” Julia says.

The girls were asked a few questions but the interrogation was interrupted by an individual looking for two German exchange students.

After the girls were cut loose, Julia went home with her host family, the LynchStauntons.

Prior to her trip, Julia contacted the family by email and was introduced to 4-H. “They asked me if I wanted to join the 4-H club, and I said yes,” she says. “It’s an experience that I can only have in Canada.”

Julia joined the Timber Trails 4-H Beef and Sheep Club and raised her very own sheep, named Sparkle.

On May 26, Julia and the Timber Trails club were at the Horseshoe Pavilion in Pincher Creek for district achievement day.

Both Timber Trails and Foothills 4-H clubs showcased their market steer, female and lamb projects, and auctioned off the animals in the evening.

Along with the 4-H experience, Julia also had a chance to attend the Livingstone Ski Academy during the semester. Students were separated into different groups and Julia was part of the racing group. She says she had a great time and

improved her skiing techniques.

Julia has enjoyed her time in Canada. She says that people here, compared to those in Stuttgart, are a lot more laid-back, open-minded and friendly.

She says that there is also a stronger sense of community and that her teachers have been fantastic, approachable and easy to get along with.

“The teachers here are a lot more relaxed and have a closer relationship to their students,” she says. “Especially Mr. Tkachuk, because he often jokes with the students and it makes his lessons more interesting.”

Julia has travelled throughout the province and has visited Lake Louise.

There is a cattle branding coming soon and she is excited to experience it for the first time.

When she heads home, Julia already has another school trip to the United Kingdom planned out, and she is excited to see her friends and family.

Upon graduation, she hopes to make another trip to Canada or to host a couple of her Canadian friends back home in Germany if they visit.

Julian Krauss “I wanted to get away from the city,” Julian says.

“It was just perfect here.”

Julian grew up in Gerlingen, a city nine kilometres west of Stuttgart.

He says he had three choices while he was applying as an international student: America, Australia and Canada.

“I wouldn’t want to go to America, because of the situation with the politics and everything right now,” Julian says.

A sister who travelled to Australia told him he might find that country too hot.

Additionally, Julian is an avid skier and he heard that Canada’s powder snow is some of the best in the world.

With those factors in mind, Julian easily made his decision. Now he just needed to figure out where exactly to stay.

Breidenbach Education “gave me a few examples of where I could go and one of those choices was Livingstone School,” Julian says.

He was also told about the Livingstone Ski Academy’s grand opening, and decided that Lundbreck was a perfect fit. He enrolled in the freestyle and all-mountain groups with the academy.

Julian has spent as much time as possible skiing at Castle Mountain, as well as mountain biking and travelling through southern Alberta.

He says he was a bit surprised by how much snow Canada gets. One day there was so much that he was almost completely snowed-in.

After a ski trip to Castle Mountain, there was so much snowfall one weekend that when it was time to head home, the family’s truck was unable to traverse the snow.

“We were snowshoeing up the hill [back home] around 5 p.m. and it took us 20 minutes to get home,” Julian says.

A plow was called the next morning to clear a path for the truck. However, the plow wasn’t able to make it until 10 a.m. and Julian needed to catch his bus in the morning in order to be on time for school.

“I needed to snowshoe in the morning at 7:20 down the driveway, and that’s one experience that I’m never going to forget.”

Julian says there have not been many challenges for him during his stay. Before making the journey, he says, he may have been a little bit nervous but that evaporated.

When school finishes, Julian is not going home right away. On June 30, his family is vacationing to Canada, with plans for a road trip to Whistler and Vancouver, as well as heading to See EXCHANGE STUDENTS, continued on page 4

New learning centre opens in the Pass

By Erin Fairhurst Stacey Bole, owner of the newly launched Little Mountaineers Learning Centre, understands all too well the struggle to find quality child care.

With over 20 years of experience in the child-care field, including working for Renfrew Educational Services and Alberta Health Services with special needs children for eight years, Stacey says it wasn’t until she became a parent herself, in 2014, that she began to seriously consider opening her own child-care facility.

“I personally experienced that quality child care is hard to come by,” she explains, adding that some of her own experiences ranged from child care falling through at the last minute, to the impersonal and uncomfortable experience of handing her toddler son over a gate to a daycare attendant at a ski resort.

“With my background, I realized that I have skills that I can offer,” she says. “I envisioned a high-quality environment where both the kids and parents can feel comfortable.”

The result of Stacey’s vision is Little Mountaineers — soon to be a fully accredited daycare facility — located in the old vet clinic building in downtown Coleman.

A tour of the extensively renovated and wheelchair-accessible building reveals a dynamic atmosphere, com-

plete with specially designated spaces for the centre’s three primary age groups, a kitchen, on-site laundry and child friendly bathrooms.

Children at the centre range from one to six years, and engage in free play, circle time, structured activities and outside activities.

“We have a great outdoor play space,” Stacey says, adding that she and her husband purchased the lot adjacent to their building with the goal of providing ample space for outdoor play. In fact, time spent outside is one of the key program components at Little Mountaineers.

Other foundational blocks of the centre include no-screen time for kids, promoting a healthy lifestyle and building social skills.

“Our tagline is Helping Kids Reach Their Peak Potential,” Stacey explains. “That’s what our goal is as a learning centre. We want to create an environment that’s truly conducive to building independence and life skills. These early years are so important.”

Little Mountaineers opened its doors in March, and Stacey says that she has received a warm reception.

“The kids cry more when they leave than when they come,” she says, adding that the centre’s enrolment is already nearly at capacity.

“Our programs are very popular for the pre-kindergarten-aged kids,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity to teach

them some kindergarten readiness skills and create some independence before they start school.”

The centre has an opendoor policy, meaning that parents can pop in to visit their little ones throughout the day.

“We don’t want parents or kids to feel cut off,” she says.

Stacey’s life has been busy since starting her own business, but she says she’s maintaining a work-life balance thanks to her husband and her son, who is one of the centre’s attendees.

“He’s a trouper,” she says with a smile.

“I have a fantastic staff here, and incredibly supportive clients,” she says. “It hasn’t been easy, but everything has finally come to fruition.”

Gloria Deuter Originally from Mannheim, Gloria is the sole international student living in Pincher Creek.

This is her second time visiting Canada, but she was just a baby the first time and doesn’t remember much.

While applying to come to Canada, Gloria was given two options: a small hamlet five hours north of Edmonton, or Pincher Creek.

“When I went to [Breidenbach Education], I was asked where I would like to go,” Gloria says.

“I said I wanted to be close to a national park and they said Alberta would probably be the best.”

She decided on Pincher Creek because it was close to Lethbridge and Calgary, whereas her other choice was rather isolated.

Gloria says that the first week of her exchange was a little tough. In addition to adjusting to the time change — Mannheim is eight hours ahead of Pincher Creek — she was dealing with some homesickness.

“On the first few days, I woke up at 4 o’clock, because in Germany it’s still 12 o’clock, so that I could Skype with my parents,” she says.

She began to Skype less with her family as the school year picked up but she’s tried to reserve a day on the weekends to chat.

Along with going to school in Pincher Creek, Gloria is an avid skier and snowboarder and she met up a few times with Julian and Julia to take on the powder at Castle Mountain.

“I like the snow here,” she says. “It was all just

powder snow. It wasn’t groomed and I like that.”

Gloria is not enrolled with the Ski Academy at Livingstone, but she says Matthew Halton students got a chance to go skiing a few times as well.

Gloria has had opportunities to travel throughout the province. She has camped around Fort Macleod, visited Banff and Lake Louise, gone shooting and tobogganing, and taken in the rodeo in Crowsnest Pass.

She also has a new-found love for chicken wings.

“I hated wings before,” she says. “But then I came here and the wings are just so good. I don’t know what the difference is.”

She plans on visiting Jasper soon and also hopes to go horseback riding before she heads home.

Gloria also wants to try cooking a few authentic German dishes — such as Rouladen — for her host-family. Rouladen is a baked beef roll stuffed with onions, pickles and other ingredients.

Gloria hopes to come back to visit Canada next year. She acknowledges that it may be a bit difficult to stay in contact with some of the people she has met in Pincher Creek, but she definitely wants to keep in contact with her host family.

Looking forward, Julia is a little bit worried about going back home because she had to buy snowboard equipment and is unsure if she’ll be able to take it with her. It was jokingly suggested that she could maybe wear her snowboard boots on the plane, but she may just have to leave them behind.

Gloria has some advice for future international students who are preparing for their own journeys. Essentially, don’t over-prepare, and be ready for surprises along the way.

“Have fun,” she says. “I don’t think you can really prepare for it because it [will be] different.”

Become a Host Family!

Livingstone Ski Academy is currently looking for fullyear placements for four international students who will be joining the LSA and attending Livingstone School during the 2017-18 school year.

We are excited to host students from Germany, Austria, and Spain in our community, where they will improve their English speaking skills, learn about our way of life and add to the cultural depth in the area.

Hosting an international student is a great way to introduce cultural diversity and learning into your home.

Homestay families make a difference in the life of a young student. They often develop lasting friendships with international students and acquire an interest in new cultures that could lead to new travel and language learning opportunities for themselves and their children.

Livingstone Range School Division provides a stipend each month for families hosting international students to help compensate them for incurred expenses.

Young bikers fly high at Bike Jam

By Tyler Ryan Young daredevils between the ages of five and 17 pedalled over to the bike park on Friday, to take part in the Pincher Creek Bike Jam. The Bike Jam was supported by the Town of Pincher Creek and local businesses. Cyclists competed in a series of events on the pump track and jump track. On the pump track, contestants were pitted against each other to see who could put in the most laps within 90 seconds. The other contest on the pump track had the bikers race for the fastest lap.

On the jump track, the riders were judged on four criteria: best style, best trick, best freestyle and best crash.

The contests were all in good fun but there were prizes up for grabs, including coupons and gift cards provided by the Bike Jam sponsors — Bike Pro, Fox Theatre, Subway,

Alpenland, Koegler’s Pharmasave and Antonio’s Pizza & Wings.

Gage Johnson was the youngest competitor at five years old, and he won all of the contests in the sixand-under category on the pump track. He zipped around the course three times in 90 seconds, and his fastest lap was 22 seconds. While still wearing his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helmet, Gage was awarded with a voucher from Antonio’s Pizza.

In the seven to 11 category, Brett Hibert’s fastest time was 16 seconds and he put in five laps to net a win in both contests.

Next up were the pedallers aged 12 to 16. Blake Coombs and Connor Donovan put in four laps each and tied for first. Blake won for the fastest time around the track, clocking in at 16 seconds.

The most experienced rider, Ethan Zoratti, won both contests on

the pump track in the 17-and-older competition. He put in five laps and his fastest time was also 16 seconds.

On the jump track, all competitors were lumped together and the winner in each of the four categories was decided amongst the bikers. In the categories of best style, best trick and best freestyle, Ethan was crowned the champion.

Despite all the fun, the Bike Jam did hit a snag near the end. Mario Girard, one of the youngest competitors, took on the biggest jump at the competition. The brave young man flew through the air and got some great air time, but he landed awkwardly and broke both of his wrists.

An ambulance was called and Mario was taken to the hospital. his dad, John Girard, says that Mario is doing much better now but he’s going to be in a cast for the next six weeks.

John says Mario “was practising his jumps earlier in the week and he was doing fine and he had a few runs at [the jump] on the day of, but on the last run that he did, I guess he just had some bad luck and had a spill.”

As Mario was being taken to the ambulance on a stretcher, the competitors decided amongst themselves to give Mario the award for best crash. They also decided to give him the top prize of $50 and he was also given some free stuff for his bike, including a new set of matching tires, pedals and grips.

Although the Bike Jam is over, bike enthusiasts can still get their fix at the annual bike rodeo, this Thursday at the Pincher Creek arena. Go Skateboarding Day is also coming next Wednesday for local boarders.

My Little

CORNER On a shelf in my office sits a three-way frame. In the centre is a photo of my dad and me, with a poem on each side.

The picture is from my high school graduation and both of us look pretty spiffy. It is a profile shot — Dad is sitting, I am standing and we are holding hands.

There are easy grins at whatever interaction was going on between us at the time, and it is a photo that makes me smile each time I pause to look at it.

Laughter, at times to the point of goofiness, is something we have always shared.

We also have a love of words in common. I’ve never known him not to be writing in some capacity or to be sharing stories through song.

He can take any old ditty and create something magical or hilarious from it (depending on the day), and at one time was known as our town’s singing mayor. If you invited him to graduation, chances were that the class would be serenaded.

I have fond memories of him teaching me melodies to go with the words in an old Co-op songbook my grandmother sent our way. I used this book to teach myself to play guitar by following the tonal transitions in his singing.

My friends thought it weird that I knew the words to so many old songs by heart. Most of these tunes still bring on nostalgia as I think

Words have given us a bond and have sometimes even created a barrier. It’s interesting how difficult it can be to communicate at times.

He has said that when things go silent on my end, he knows something is wrong.

This brings me back to the small triple frame on my shelf.

The poem on the left side was written by me after Dad had a heart attack.

It was Nov. 30, 1985. I was in Grade 12 and he was only 39 years old. That night, when I couldn’t sleep, I turned to pen and paper — my comfort zone.

I wrote a poem for myself, using the meter to calm the frazzled nerves of a young girl worrying that her father might not come home from the hospital.

Eventually I slept.

Some time later, Mom found the rumpled sheet of loose-leaf with my heart poured out on it.

Unbeknownst to me, she decided it was something my dad needed to read. She took it from my desk and put it in his sock drawer.

Months later, after the grad photo was taken, he presented me with the framed smiles and words — his response completed the trio.

Someone brought me tears today.

I found them in the oddest place — a drawer of socks — and there on top, a verse about a winter day, a young

girl’s hurt — my daughter’s love for me.

My eyes filled, just like at the end of a “Little House” show.

Holding a photograph of you — of us together — I reflect upon the happiness, love and trust mirrored there. Kindred spirits, joined, as surely as the photo shows, our hands clasped to one another.

What joy is mine that you should give a place so special to me, within your tender heart.

All these years later, the words still carry great weight.

I am the lucky one to have the father I do and to still have him around (for many years I hope).

If you’ve been reading Tyler Ryan’s columns, you’ll know that our young intern is dealing with his father’s recently diagnosed health issues.

Based on our chats, I can see that he also has a tender-hearted relationship with his dad.

I’m glad that he will be able to zip to Calgary to spend Father’s Day with his family.

To me, the most difficult part of my move from Saskatchewan to Alberta is missing out on important family time.

Despite the miles between us, I’m sure that my parents know I am with them in spirit not only on special days, but every single day.

This tender heart carries much love for my family.

Spray park gets $125,000 boost from province Livingstone-Macleod MLA Pat Stier, on behalf of the Community Facilities Enhancement Program, presents a cheque for $125,000 to Jennifer Draper, who chairs the Pincher Creek Spray Park Society. The society applied for the provincial grant, which will go towards the estimated $500,000 project, put out to tender June 1. Jennifer says the group planned for a completion date of Aug. 30, but is running slightly behind schedule.

Gardening brings sense of accomplishment

When you ask Billi for her gardening secrets, her answer is simple.

The second segment of the New Balance track meet series took place in Calgary on May 28.

Four Passtrak athletes attended and produced some very respectable results, including three lifetime-best performances and four new club records. They also picked up three silver medals along the way.

Paige Richards had two events in the midget girls category, for ages 14 and 15. She ran the fastest 100 metres of her life in 13.76 seconds for a 13th-place finish. She then added 47 centimetres to her previous best long jump by clearing

4.36 metres for 10th place.

Alina Pharis was also in the midget girls group. She cut more than two seconds off her previous best in the 150 metres, crossing the finish line in 23.19 seconds.

Her time set a new Passtrak club record. Her best discus throw of the day was 14.76 metres for seventh place overall.

Ethan Richards contested one event, the 400 metres, in the junior men’s division, for ages 18 and 19.

He missed a lifetime best by 5/100s of a second, finishing fifth in 54.48 seconds.

By Passtrak Coach Ritch Braun competition in a Passtrak uniform. She is in the 40 to 44 masters age group and was the busiest of the Passtrak athletes, with three events.

She earned a silver medal in the 150-metre race in 25.94 seconds, which was also a new Passtrak record for her age group. Then she cleared 1.14 metres in the high jump for another silver medal and another new club record. Just so she could remain consistent, she placed second in the discus with a toss of 14.50 metres for a third new Passtrak record.

Reuse and Recycle Fair returns

By Tyler Ryan Mark your calendars: the annual Pincher Creek Reuse and Recycle Fair is coming this Saturday.

The fair goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ranchland Mall parking lot. The event is free and everyone is welcome to drop off or take home some stuff.

Marie Everts, the town’s events, marketing and economic development officer, says the reuse fair has two benefits. First, it’s a great way for people to get old electronics, paints, and hazardous materials out of their homes.

“Part 2 is to encourage people to share things with other people that they may not want anymore,” she says.

For example, if someone has an old dining-room table that is no longer needed but doesn’t necessarily belong in the dump, they can take it to the reuse fair and hopefully it can go to a new home.

“The paper-shredder truck will also be there,” Marie says.

“If you have documents that you need to get rid of safely, you can bring them to the shredder truck.”

Fridges, ovens and other big appliances are not allowed to be dropped off. Whatever is left

over from the reuse fair will be removed.

The Pincher Creek Family Centre (formerly Pincher Creek Parent Link) will also be on location from 9 a.m. until noon to accept donations of lightly used children’s clothing, books and toys, all for ages five and under.

A table will be set up so people can find items to take home as well.

Items damaged or soiled beyond repair will not be accepted by the Family Centre.

Any items that are left over will be donated to various family aid agencies in the area.

From big and small TVs to laptops and scanners and everything in between, 267 electronic items were kept out of the landfill because of the reuse fair in 2016. Five bins of paint totaling 3,000 litres, plus 77 cans of spray paint and 949 kilograms of household hazardous waste were also stopped from entering the landfill.

People who attend the event are free to take whatever they want and there is no limit on the amount of stuff someone can take.

“If you can carry it out or fit it in your truck, you can take it,” Marie says.

Those of you who read my column in the June 7 issue of Shootin’ the Breeze may remember that I talked about changes and my dad, Lawrence Ryan.

For those of you who didn’t get a chance to read the piece — or need a refresher — here’s an excerpt that I’d like to highlight: My dad sat in his La-Z-Boy recliner in our front room. Wrapped on his wrist was a yellow bracelet with all of his personal information. As I sat down on the sofa beside, the bad news came out.

Prostate surgery on Monday. Cirrhosis of the liver, in a man who rarely drank and never smoked.

An irregular heartbeat. Sleep apnea. Major spinal surgery for a bulging disc later in August.

Medications and treatments fill the cabinet beside our fridge.

“The doctors told me I have less than two years,” he said to me. “That’s not for sure, but just so you know, be prepared.”

But why start here? Of all of the cool events that I covered, like the Bike Jam, and the 4-H achievement day at Heritage Acres, as well as all the fantastic people I met during the week, why dwell here?

Because with Father’s Day coming this Sunday, in addition to thinking of my own dad back in Calgary, I thought about all the proud dads (and moms, don’t forget the moms) who were supporting their kids at these events.

I watched Jeremy Nelson, leader of the shooting sports project with the Chinook 4-H Multiclub, swell with pride as his son and daughter showcased their shooting skills at the Summerview Feedlot Black Powder Gun Range.

At Crestview Lodge, the mayor of Pincher Creek and the reeve of the MD of Pincher Creek had a special luncheon with the seniors — many of them them dads and granddads — and thanked them for all they do.

From the Sword and Shield awards at St. Michael’s School, to the Bike Jam at the skate park, to private conversations and loud exhalations, the spirit of “dadhood” seemed to be everywhere this week.

I introduced you to my own dad last week but you only got a chance to see a sliver of the man. So I hope you don’t mind if I tell you a little bit more about him.

For starters, Lawrence Ryan is a lot like Uncle Phil from the ’90s TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Full disclosure: Lawrence is not a judge

and he does not live in a big fancy mansion or have a butler named Geoffrey.

Instead, he’s an accountant. He lives in a nice home in a Calgary suburb, not too flashy but similar to a house you would find along Pineridge Way here in town.

And no, he does not have a butler.

The similarities he shares with Uncle Phil don’t come from their lifestyles but, instead, from their personalities.

Tough but fair. Strict but caring.

Lawrence pushes everyone around him towards excellence, but he also understands that nobody is perfect and that mistakes happen.

My parents met at the Fable Table, a now-defunct buffet that my dad managed. Initially, my mom, Yolanda Villanueva, completely shot him down. But after much goading from her friend, she gave him a chance.

They dated for years, my mom working as a nanny and my dad putting himself through university.

But then I happened.

Money was tight but they tied the knot seven months after I was born.

Shortly after, he left university to start up his own business and raise a family.

Like every family, we went through our trials and tribulations. There were yelling matches and stern talks but we got through it. To this day, my parents are still married.

In me, Lawrence instilled the values of hard work and tenacity to get what I want in life.

He showed me how to stand up for myself, but he also drilled into me the notion that “We do not hit girls in this house,” after I pushed away a girl who was bullying me back in preschool.

He even showed me how to handle my very own .22 Henry repeater rifle, a Christmas present that I received when I was 13.

As I was growing up, my mom was a fiery supernova whereas my dad was a calm sea. I took after my mom’s personality, but he showed me how to be gentle, soft-spoken, mellow.

I could go on about how my dad moulded me into the person that I am today, but I’m running out of room on the page.

So as I come to the end of my piece, I want to let you all know that I will not be here on the weekend. I will be back home in Calgary for the Father’s Day weekend.

I hope that you too will be spending some time with your dads. Even if it’s just a phone call.

A local look back Florence (Filumena) Lassandro

BY CHRIS MATTHEWS, CURATOR OF CROWSNEST PASS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES Immigrating with her family, nine-yearold Florence Costanzo was growing up in a foreign land. They first moved to Fernie, B.C., where the Costanzo and Picariello families became acquainted.

When she was 14, her father arranged a marriage for her. Her new husband, Carlo Sanfidele (Charles Lassandro), was 23 years old, and eventually became a driver for Emilio Picariello. Florence worked as a maid in the hotel where they lived, and helped Maria Picariello look after her new baby.

The two families were very close.

In 1918, the young couple followed the Picariellos to Blairmore, where Charles managed the Alberta Hotel.

Four years later, the Lassandros still had no children of their own, and the marriage was breaking down.

Florence moved in with the Picariellos above the hotel and worked as a housekeeper, looking after the children.

Fast forward to 1922 and Florence Lassandro is speeding towards Coleman with Emilio Picariello, with the intent of confronting Const. Steve Lawson. Moments later, their car pulls up in front of the barracks and

home of the Lawsons.

An argument erupts between Picariello, Lassandro and Lawson.

Then shots are fired and Const. Lawson lies dead on the ground.

Who pulled the trigger? Why was Lassandro there? What would happen to an immigrant woman accused of murdering a police officer?

Cathedral Grove: Canada’s oldest inhabitants Off the southern coast of British Columbia lies Vancouver Island, home to our country’s oldest and biggest living trees. The most colossal species include Douglas fir, western red cedar and Sitka spruce.

While the largest samples of these towering sentinels are tucked away on the southern part of the Island, Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park is easily accessible from the highway and allows locals and visitors alike the opportunity to stand beneath an authentic stretch of old-growth forest.

Cathedral Grove is a provincially protected remnant of an ancient Douglas fir forest. The most massive of the trees are about 800 years old and measure 75 metres tall by nine metres in circumference. These giants are the remaining survivors of a forest fire that devastated the landscape some 350 years ago.

In addition to Douglas firs, western red cedars, western hemlock and grand firs populate the area. The forest is also home to numerous species of wildlife, including deer, elk, black bears, cougars, owls, woodpeckers, insects, reptiles and amphibians. The Cameron River flows

through the park, and various species of trout and other fish inhabit the running waters.

The site was a wellknown tourist stop as early as the 1920s but only became classified as a provincial park in 1947. Residents petitioned the provincial government for many years to acquire the lands. Finally, in 1944, H.R. MacMillan (chief forester of British Columbia and head of H.R. MacMillan Export Company) forfeited his company’s timber holdings for the “perpetual enjoyment of the public in recognition of the unique stand of trees.”

However, long before Europeans stood in amazement under the wooden giants, the trees were significant to Coast Salish peoples in the area. There’s evidence of culturally modified trees — specifically redwood cedars with strips of bark peeled off the trunks — that dates back over a thousand years.

The Coast Salish believe the trees have healing and spiritual powers and long ago learned how to fell and use them for a variety of purposes. The rot-resistant wood was used to make canoes, post-and-beam houses, storage trunks, dance masks and totem poles, among many other things.

With heavy hearts, the family of Francis (Frank) Bruder announce his passing on the morning of June 7, 2017. Frank was born in 1920 in Fishburn, south of Pincher Creek.

Frank was the beloved husband of Annie E. Dixon-Bruder.

Frank is also survived by his children, Linda (Wayne) Hadley-Roberts, Francine Sorge, George Bruder, Gwen (Mitch) Jacques, and his stepdaughters, Peggy (Malcolm) McRae and Connie Laitinen; his grandchildren, James (Kathy), Matthew (Shauna), Sarah (Jon White), Ryan (Jessica), Lucas (Brenda), Jenny and William; his great-grandchildren, Gracie, Letsie, Travis, Clayton, Jolene, Rylan, Danika, Grayson, Noah, Reece and Freya; also two sisters, Agatha (Murray) McRae and Rosalie (Emil) Levesque, and sisters-in-law Vernie Bruder, Freda Bruder and Frances Riviere.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Violet Jean Bruder, and by son-in-law Vernon Sorge.

Frank was one of the last Second World War veterans from the Twin Butte area, and a lifetime Royal Canadian Legion member. He loved farming and ranching and was very active in the community over the years.

Frank had many hobbies, and enjoyed making wooden furniture for his great-grandchildren, fishing, berry-picking, winemaking, and always had a wonderful garden — and a wonderful smile.

The family would like to thank the special caregivers at Vista Village, home care, Pincher Creek Health Centre and Crestview Lodge for all their assistance in the past years.

Stuart William Murfin (a.k.a. Beef) passed away June 10, 2017, age 59, after a short battle with COPD and a heart problem.

He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Rose; daughters Vanessa (Jesse) and Kimberly (Turc); and grandchildren Henry, Finn, Soda and Zeph.

He is also survived by sisters Shirley (Bob) Gamble, Judy Ferguson and Barb (Louis) Patterson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Stu was born on Feb. 4, 1958, and resided in Pincher Creek most of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Joan Murfin, brother Doug Murfin and brother-in-law Carl Ferguson.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Snodgrass Funeral Home (1101 Main St., Pincher Creek).

Encounters happen: be educated and be prepared

By Tyler Ryan A cougar sighting at Canyon School in Pincher Creek was reported to police on June 3.

RCMP confirmed that Const.

Spencer Curwin responded to the call, but upon arrival, no cougar was found in the area.

Fish and Wildlife has not been able to locate a cougar.

“At this point, it is an unconfirmed sighting,” says Brendan Cox, public affairs officer with Alberta Justice. “There hasn’t been any actual evidence of a resident cougar or any cause for concern in the area.”

The Pincher Creek waterway that runs through town is a natural corridor for wildlife, and animals may follow it into town.

“Sometimes it’s a case of mistaken identity, where someone has seen a different animal that they believe might be a cougar,” Brendan says.

In the event that people spot the cougar, or any other large animal, they are asked to call the 24-hour Report a Poacher line at 1-800-6423800.

A few things can be done to reduce the likelihood of a cougar encounter.

“First, we always encourage people to have their dogs on a leash,

and that will help reduce the chances of a surprise encounter,” Brendan says.

Without a leash, a pet may take off and can lead another animal back to the owner.

“In cougar country, we encourage people to walk in a group if they’re in a wilderness area,” Brendan says. He also says to make plenty of noise along the trail and avoid wearing earbuds. Take along bear spray as well.

A few things can also be done at home to reduce the likelihood of wildlife coming onto property.

First, reduce any dense foliage and trim shrubs that may act as a shelter for animals.

Next, close off any spaces under decks or shed.

Brenden recommends removing any bird feeders on the property from April to October. He also suggests harvesting any berries or fruits that may grow around the

home, and not planting those types of plants because they will attract animals.

“If you’re attracting small animals like a prey species, it’s more likely that a predator will follow them,” he says.

Instead of putting garbage out the night before pickup, put it out the morning of. Also keep barbecues clean and stored away.

Finally, keep pets indoors when possible. When pets needs to respond to the call of nature, supervise them.

Also be on the lookout for crows, magpies or any other scavenger birds circling in the sky or congregating.

“That might be a sign that there is a carcass nearby that a bear or a cougar has hidden and saved for later,” he says. “These birds would be waiting to get a chance at it too.”

“Don’t put yourself in a position where you may be in between a predator and that potential food source,” says Brendan.

In the event of a cougar encounter, Brendan says that people should back away slowly, and try to put as many obstacles as they can between themselves and the cougar.

If possible, get inside a building and call the 24-hour poacher line.

“Cougars are usually shy of humans, and if they know that there are humans in the area, [cougars] will usually keep to themselves and leave,” Brendan says.

In the rare chance that a cougar attacks, fight back with everything you’ve got.

“Bear spray will help with bears and cougars, and you’ll want to have that in a holster or something where it is easily accessible,” Brendan says. Aim for the eyes and nose.

If you don’t have bear spray, be ready to fight back with any means necessary.

“In these situations where people fight back and show the cougar that they are not an easy target, then the cougar, in the vast majority of cases, will relent and leave,” Brendan says.

Much fun in store at Bellecrest Days

Crowsnest Pass will kick off its Canada 150 celebrations with a jam-packed summer of community activities.

The 39th annual Bellecrest Days begins this Thursday, and director of events Krissy Ames says the festivities get “a bit bigger and better every year.”

Bellecrest Days has grown from a tiny affair into a vibrant community celebration for the entire Crowsnest Pass.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun for the grown-ups, as well as the kids,” Krissy says.

A full lineup of events can be found at www.bellecrest.ca, but highlights include a parade, carnival, food fair and market on Main Street Bellevue, beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. Two main stages will feature live music by local artists — Shelly Groves, Second String Fiddle Jam, Sestra and more.

Turning Pointe Dance Studio will also be entertaining, and karate demonstrations will be provided by Karasu Studio. First Nations drumming and dancing will take place on the stages throughout the weekend.

New features for Bellecrest Days include an antique photo studio, which will be set up in the old Bellevue Bank building.

“We’ve tried to fill up a lot of empty buildings,” says Krissy, adding that the Bellevue Café will play host to a pop-up gallery featuring four local artists.

In between taking in all the activities at the carnival and market (including human foosball, power wrestling and chainsaw-carving demos), Bellecrest Days attendees can relax on the patio of the Bellevue Inn or wander about and indulge their taste buds in some of Bellevue’s many culinary offerings, including specialties from Marie’s Poutine House and the Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe. Hotdogs, hamburgers and good old-fashioned baking will

also be available.

The bulk of the activities take place during the day Saturday in Bellevue, but check the entire schedule to make sure you don’t miss out.

Evening entertainment will also be offered throughout the extended weekend, beginning Thursday with a family dance at the Bellevue Legion at 7 p.m., and a house concert, featuring musician Taylor Scott, at the old church in Hillcrest at 8 p.m. Concert tickets must be bought in advance at the Blairmore Scotiabank.

The Bellevue Legion is hosting its annual comedy dinner show on Friday at 5 p.m, and the Bellevue Inn is featuring live music by the Bushtown Boys on both Friday and Saturday. If you’re in the mood for a family night out, stop by the Orpheum Theatre in Blairmore for a free family movie and popcorn on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mainstays such as the Bellevue Underground Mine and Crockets are offering special events as well, so be sure to pop in to check them out.

Over in Hillcrest, the Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall is hosting a pancake breakfast Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.

On Sunday, registered participants will meet at the Hillcrest Miners Club to hike to the historic Hillcrest mine site.

Whether you’re looking for a fun day out with the kids or a night out on the town, there’s something for everyone at Bellecrest Days.

A speciality Bellecrest Days booklet has been printed for the event, with a complete schedule and other details. It is available at Crockets, IGA and distributed through the schools for kids to take home for their parents.

The entire event is organized by the Bellecrest Community Association, but Krissy says it’s truly a community effort.

“We’re just so excited for this event,” she says. “We hope everyone enjoys it.”
