Young athlete to represent Canada at Festival of Lifesaving

By Tyler Ryan At six years old, Taylor Deley started swimming, but she quit after a year because she had no desire to stay in the pool.

Fast-forward six years and Taylor’s mom, Traci, enrolled her in swimming again, partly to stave off the boredom Taylor complained about during summer vacation.

After four years of swimming — three with the Max Bell Mantas team in Lethbridge — and many hours of training, Taylor competed at the 2017 Canadian Pool Lifesaving Championships this June, winning five medals — two gold, a silver and two bronze.

“I started out with another swim team, as just a sport that I thought I could try, and it turns out that I love it,” Taylor says.

“It’s my absolute favourite.”

When Taylor started with the Mantas, the team was not very competitive, she says. But along with her friend and fellow Pincher Creek athlete Jarret Plante, she became a lot keener on competing.

She raced in the World Lifesaving Championships in September 2016 and that’s when she heard the national team was looking for swimmers. She was set on getting a spot on the team.

Taylor’s determination, and support from her family, kept her going back to the water and she has now been selected to represent Canada in a series of upcoming competitions: the Commonwealth Festival of Lifesaving in South Africa from Aug. 8 to 12 and the Orange Cup and German Cup in November.

Taylor says she wasn’t fully expecting to be selected for the national team because there were more-experienced swimmers at the competition.

“The second-oldest on the team is in their 20s and I’m 16, so that was a little different being the youngest,” she says.

During the preliminary rounds of the lifesaving championships, Taylor broke some of her personal records and that success pushed her to the final round of competition.

She raced in nine events over the span of two days in the women’s 19-and-under category.

Her two gold-medal performances came in the 100metre tow with fins and the 100-metre manikin relay open.

In the tow with fins competition, Taylor swam 50 metres while wearing large swimming fins and carrying a tow rope.

“It kind of looks like a big banana behind you,” she says.

After swimming the initial 50 metres with the big yellow tube, she strapped an 80-pound manikin onto it and towed everything across the finish line.

“You only have five metres to strap [the manikin] in,” she adds.

“If you go past the five metres then you’re disqualified.”

Her silver medal came from the 100-metre carry with fins, a race where athletes need to swim 50 metres, grab a 100-pound submerged manikin and haul it back across the finish line.

She was also awarded a bronze medal in the 200-metre medley relay. Each relayer had a different role. Taylor was the third swimmer and needed to pull a tow rope to the last member of the team, who was already in the water.

“The third person touches the wall and the fourth person has their fins on, grabs the tow rope and hauls [the third swimmer while they’re] holding onto the end of the tow rope,” she says.

Sleepy Hollow features carvings of local artist

By Auralea Boldt Sleepy Hollow Campground has recently taken on more character, thanks to the artistic talents of Zack Neuburger.

Zack, 25, was staying in

Sleepy Hollow campground after returning from living and working in the Yukon.

Campground co-owner Connie Varley saw him carving a poplar root and was impressed by his artistic ability.

She then invited — and commissioned — him to transform two stumps next to the campground office into wood carvings.

She has plans for him to continue his work throughout the campground.

Zack says he is essentially self-taught. He learned a few skills from an acquaintance in the Yukon, and also purchased Zack Neuberger has been creating chainsaw art at Sleepy Hollow Campground in Pincher Creek.

He started out carving spruce burls. As he increased his proficiency with a chainsaw, he branched out to do carvings of big-horn sheep, and then faces.

Zack has a background in art.

He attended the fine arts program for two years at the University of Lethbridge, where he studied painting and drawing.

At the time, he found the program too structured for his taste, and felt it was aimed more at those who wanted to become teachers. However, some of what he learned, such as composition and proportions, translated well into his wood carvings.

Zack has made his livelihood with a chainsaw at times throughout his life, so was already experienced working with wood.

He says the process of making his carvings is “fairly intuitive.”

The hardest aspect is developing the three-dimensional profile. The flow of the hair and eyes of each figure also prove challenging.

As he starts the carving, he has an idea of what he would like to create, but must stay flexible throughout the process, as the wood ultimately informs his artistic vision.

He originally planned to make one of the trees into a wizard, but instead it became a gnome, due to the shape of the wood at the top of the stump.

The two carvings are intended to be a couple, as requested by Connie Varley.

Zack starts with a blocky shape, then roughs out the proportions of each feature. He does the larger pieces with a chainsaw, and then refines his vision and features with a set of chisels.

“I think a lot of people leave a stump with some idea that they’d like to do something,” he says.

“They hope it might grow back. It might have been an attempt to prune it that killed it.

Residents raise concerns over Hillcrest Meadows

By Tyler Ryan Dozens of local residents met with representatives from Martin Geomatic Consultants last Wednesday in Pincher Creek to voice concerns over the proposed Hillcrest Meadows subdivision.

The proposed site is in the area of Crocus Street and Tumbleweed Avenue in the northeast part of town.

Many shared concerns regarding soil sloughing on the proposed site, stormwater drainage, traffic and overall necessity of the project.

Ben Martin, president of Martin Geomatic Consultants, answered questions during the session.

With regard to water issues, he said there are plans to create a dry pool to catch rain run-off, with almost twice the capacity of a “one-in-a-hundred-year storm” — a calculation of a flood event with a one per cent probability of occurring in any given year.

“We’re going to collect all of the water and we’re going to send it north and away from the edge of the coulees,” Mr. Martin said, adding that an emergency overflow would be put in place, in accordance with rules set forth

by Alberta Environment and the Town of Pincher Creek.

There would also be catch basins and foundation drains in all of the new homes, and “French drains or tile drains in the street to collect the water that seeps in under the pavement,” Mr. Martin

said.

When asked if this would be the first thing built during the project, he said “not necessarily,” because there may be homes in the northeastern portion of the development that could be built first.

The pipe and sewage systems would tap into existing infrastructure around the site, Mr. Martin said, and there would be no construction under existing homes.

He said he was aware of the soil sloughing issue surrounding the Hillcrest Meadows development and added, “It’s going to continue to slough, no matter what we do or don’t do, but by us collecting the water, it’s going to mitigate or reduce the amount of sloughing.”

Some townspeople at the open house felt communication between town administration and residents had been inadequate.

Among them was Savi Houldin, who said “pushing this development through [with] 77 units almost feels like it’s being pushed through without people knowing.”

“I don’t think the town needs this,” she continued, citing 303 vacant houses in the area spanning from Brocket to Crowsnest Pass.

She would support a referendum on the new development and hopes for more open dialogue between the town, Martin Geomatic Consulting and

residents.

Despite Mr. Martin’s explanations of how the project would be undertaken, many at the meeting were not sold on the development.

Dianne Gray said there are inconsistencies in the information that is publicly available.

“The information in their documentation is inadequate,” she said. “It doesn’t address a lot of the water needs. And as a resident living on similar [land], there are so many issues around sump pumps and leakages and foundational durations, and they haven’t addressed that for many homeowners.”

“What happens if the development falls through or isn’t completed in a certain time frame?” another person asked during the event. “Will the taxpayers be stuck with the bill?”

Mr. Martin could not provide a time frame for construction in the event that the development is approved by council.

“This is just the first step in a longer process,” he said.

A public hearing regarding the Hillcrest Meadows area structure plan will be held at town hall on Monday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. All residents are invited to attend.

I know people who have carved chairs into them.

“I think a carving, it’s art, it adds a bit of novelty to a scene more than just an old tree stump might. It’s not something you see every day. They are a unique feature.”

Zack would like to eventually expand his service to all of southern Alberta and into British Columbia. He currently works at Grumpy’s Landscaping, and sees his art as a potential complement to his day job.

His long-term goal would be to develop his wood carving into a career.

“I’d like to do as many as I could,” he says.

He has a Facebook page, Twisted Timberwood Craft, which he jokes makes him “official by 2017 standards.”

Connie says she has received many compliments on Zack’s work, and high praise of his artistic abilities by those familiar with the art form.

Zack sees creativity as an important part of life.

“There is so little room or expression in everyday life,” he says.

“People have the desire to create. You hear so often, ‘If I had your talent.’ People have the desire to express themselves, it just takes a willingness to try. I feel it is important to do something beautiful and expressive.”

Castle parks campground improvements underway Castle Provincial Park now has 184 available campsites at Castle River Bridge, Castle Falls, Lynx Creek and Beaver Mines provincial recreation areas. Improvements include new firepits, picnic tables, information kiosks and signage, as well as vaulted toilets and trail improvements throughout the park.

Other projects underway include new day-use shelters and the creation of more than a dozen rustic camping sites capable of supporting RVs. The province is also conducting an assessment of all trails in the Castle parks to develop a backcountry system for improved cross-country skiing, mountain biking, snowshoeing and horseback riding.

“Albertans have loved the Castle for generations,” says Shannon Phillips, minister of environment and parks. “We’re protecting this natural wonder while improving accessibility and amenities that enrich the ability for Albertans to enjoy one of the most majestic and biologically diverse areas in the province.”

The first part of a four-year, $20-million plan to improve

recreation opportunities in the Castle parks is complete. New amenities include improved and expanded campsites, an improved day-use area with a new trailhead, washroom facility and additional parking at Butcher’s Lake and new comfort cabins at Beaver Mines Lake, expanding the diversity of opportunities offered in Castle Provincial Park.

“The Castle is a special place that is already loved by campers and RV users. Our industry welcomes improvements to the Castle parks and looks forward to exciting new investments in coming years,” says Dan Merkowsky, executive vicepresident of the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association.

“By building spaces today, more Albertans will get to experience the Castle, creating their own RV traditions and memories along the way.”

Ron Keer’s memory lives on at Bobby Burns Fish Pond

By Tyler Ryan Before his passing, Ron Keer would visit Bobby Burns Fish Pond daily to keep the park in tip-top shape for other visitors.

Mr. Keer was a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion with over 50 years of service.

Last Thursday, members of the Legion’s Pincher Creek branch unveiled a park bench, built in memory of Mr. Keer, to his widow, Margaret.

“Once he retired from

working, then this was his project,” she said, gesturing to the park. “He didn’t fish but he would come feed the fish and mow the lawns.”

“I always expected to hear that he had rolled into the pond going on the slope,” she added with a laugh.

Pincher Creek Legion service officer Lorne Pultz started building the bench last summer, occasionally spending two or three hours a day on the project.

By Arianna Korbett Beer enthusiasts had an opportunity to sample Alberta beers, barbecued cuisine, live music and perfect summer weather at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village’s first Beers to You event, held July 22.

About 90 people enjoyed an evening on the newly finished patio outside the museum’s Garden Cafe. Kyle Baines of Andrew Hilton Wine and Spirits in Lethbridge guided the beer tasting while Jim Peace provided live musical entertainment.

The tasting featured six Alberta craft beers, including picks from Wild Rose Brewery of Calgary and Blindman Brewing of Lacombe. They ranged from light, fruity beers, which many people seemed to enjoy, to hoppy India pale ales enjoyed by a select few.

While people enjoyed their samples, Kyle provided background information about each brewery and beer.

Pulled pork and beef sliders, stuffed jalepenos and seafood mac ’n’ cheese, served up by Kevin Turner, went hand-inhand with the varieties of beer

and the summer weather.

Following the tasting, Bob Westrop led a live auction of treasures from the museum’s gift shop and three steak dinners for 10. Proceeds from the drinks, food and auction go toward the cost of constructing the deck and the upcoming Hudson’s Bay building and exhibit.

Thanks to the hard work of museum staff and volunteers, the event ran smoothly and was enjoyable for everyone attending.

The possibility of it becoming an annual community event is in the books.

The museum had previously held two scotch whisky tastings, also led by Andrew Hilton Wine and Spirits, and plans to host a wine tasting this fall.

Waterton festival provides Blackfoot experience Parks Canada is pleased to work with the Blackfoot Canadian Cultural Society to present the Blackfoot Arts and Heritage Festival, which showcases indigenous Blackfoot culture.

Heritage Acres gears up for 30th Annual Show

Or a farm boy or farm girl who wants to take a trip down memory lane?

Are you and your family just looking for something fun to do over the August long weekend?

Heritage Acres Farm Museum is hosting its 30th Annual Show this Friday to Sunday.

Sandra Reed, chairperson of the Annual Show, says the weekend will be filled with fun activities, demonstrations with vintage farming equipment, and live music performed by local acts.

“We are 30 years old now and it’s sort of a birthday party,” Sandra says. She adds that Heritage Acres will also be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.

The Annual Show starts at 3 p.m. Friday with a stationary engine demonstration.

A tractor-pull contest at the main grandstand will follow and a barn hunt dog demonstration is planned for later in the day.

Saturday is shaping up to be the biggest day at Heritage Acres.

At 11:30 a.m. the refurbished dairy barn will be officially opened to the public after years of restoration work and visitors are encouraged to check it out.

out their livelihoods prior to the advent of many modern farming technologies, and Sandra says these demonstrations tend to be a hit with visitors.

She says Heritage Acres is the only museum in Alberta that can accurately demonstrate how farmers before 1960 would plant seeds, grow grain, build grain stooks and move the stooks into grain elevators.

“We have a working grain

elevator and that’s one of the big attractions at our show,” Sandra says.

For vintage car or tractor buffs, the Annual Show will have a vintage car show. Tractors and equipment made by International Harvester will also be featured.

A memorabilia booth will be set up so fans will be able to take home some merchandise as well.

Another big draw will be the Parade of Power, which shows off

a variety of old tractors in front of the main grandstand while giving parade-watchers a history lesson about the old machines.

The Parade of Power will get into gear at 2:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

For anybody interested in being a part of the Parade of Power, registration starts Friday at noon.

Heritage Station will be showcasing a collection of model trains and handmade dioramas of the area, so there’s something for model-train enthusiasts too.

Sandra promises some good old-fashioned family fun with rope making, nail pounding and a visit from the pedal tractor farm.

“They have pedal tractors for anybody of all ages,” Sandra says. “Last year, my 25-year-old grandson was riding one.”

Saturday evening entertainment will be put on by a slew of performers, including Jim Peace, Doug Rawling, and the Carraganas. Other acts will be performing throughout the three days.

While all three days are sure to be jam-packed with thrills, Sandra says to be sure to “come out Saturday, because it will be the most exciting day of your life!”

Dry camping is available for the weekend. Preregistration is not required and the cost is $10 per night.

Don’t miss the Doors Open and Heritage Festival!

By Erin Fairhurst The 12th annual Crowsnest Pass Doors Open and Heritage Festival takes place Thursday through Monday, and Fred Bradley of the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative says there will be something for everyone.

“This is a celebration of our historical, cultural and natural heritage,” he says of the festival, which has 35 different events to take in.

Back in 2005, Fred and Cathy Pisony of the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre attended a workshop about launching a Doors Open event in Crowsnest Pass. Initially it was intended to showcase historic buildings in the community, but the vision quickly expanded to opening up much more.

“We have so much cultural and natural heritage here in Crowsnest Pass,” says Fred.

“Doors Open is becoming an important annual event for the community.”

This year’s theme is Lawmen

of the Prohibition, and special recognition will be paid to the newly opened Alberta Provincial Police Barracks on the museum grounds in downtown Coleman.

The APP Barracks, which celebrated its grand opening over Canada Day long weekend, has been receiving a great deal of positive feedback and Fred hopes that it will continue to be a major attraction.

“It’s an important part of our history,” he says. “It’s a Crowsnest Pass story, but also an iconic Canadian Prohibition rumrunning story.”

Several special events will take place honouring this year’s theme, including a presentation

by Michael Gourlie of the Provincial Archives of Alberta on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Crowsnest Museum.

guided bus tour will also leave from the centre that day at 1 p.m.

While marquee events highlight the theme of this year’s festival, plenty of familiar events that have become a traditional part of Doors Open — such as the Coleman Country Market, the Teddy Bear Picnic, the show and shine car parade, and several outdoor events such as walking tours, and a mountain bike ride to historic Lille — will be held over the course of the festival.

The launch event of the festival will take place Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Polish Hall, located at 1406 82nd St. in Coleman. The Heritage Youth Theatre Company will present Badges, Bootleggers & Bullets and audience members will be treated to original works inspired by the tragic shooting death of Const.

Directed by Rebecca Dewey, this free event will feature several local youth performers. Music, reception, food and drink to follow.

Activities take place throughout the weekend at the Bellevue Underground Mine, Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. Several local eateries are participating in a food fest portion of the celebrations, offering special menu items and the chance to partake in a draw.

The Doors Open and Heritage Festival attracts 8,000 to 9,000 visitors and, as Fred says, is ultimately about celebrating all aspects of Crowsnest Pass.

“It really celebrates who we are as a community,” he says. “It tells our story.”

Running on teen spirit Crowsnest Consolidated High School’s Sinister 7 team, Running on Teen Spirit, placed 33rd out of 148 mixed teams in the 100-mile relay. Their combined time was an astonishing 22 hours 27 minutes 51.5 seconds. The teens met for weekly group training runs, trained individually and took part in other races in the spring to prepare for the race of their lives.

I’ve never had a dog.

I always wanted one but I remember my dad saying, “No. Absolutely not. This home will never have a cat or dog living here.”

He also said I wasn’t responsible enough to take care of a puppy.

So 12-year-old me found a loophole: I got two budgies instead.

Over the last week, my roommate — Dennis Robin — and I have been taking care of Jinger and Bear. The dogs belong to my boss, Shannon Robison and her daughter, Jaiden Panchyshyn.

Jinger is fine. She’s a tiny chihuahua-looking dog and she minds her business, but part of why she’s so well behaved is, I think, because she’s scared of me.

Although, if I weighed around five pounds and was the size of the average person’s forearm, I’d probably be scared of everything as well.

Bear is a different story.

Bear is not even a year old but he’s a force to be reckoned with.

He’s a husky-shepherd cross and taking care of him is like taking care of a 60-pound baby with sharp teeth and an endless reserve of energy.

When he gets something in his jaws — like my sunglasses that he chewed on — it’s almost impossible to get it back.

When I first came down to Pincher Creek in May, I knew there would be a lot of first-time experiences for me, but I never thought I’d chalk up puppysitting as one of them.

But here we are.

On the very first day that Bear started staying with us, I almost lost him.

He was terrorizing the cats that were also staying with us, and I decided to send him outside.

I was oblivious to what he was doing because I was making a peanut butter and jam sandwich while lost in the smooth jazz of Miles Davis’s “Blue in Green.”

When I looked out the window, he was gone.

No big deal, I foolishly thought to myself. He probably just went around the side of the house to lie in a cool patch of grass.

Nope.

As I went outside — making sure that no other animals got out behind me — I hollered, “Bear!”

I waited five seconds and no dog.

“Bear, come here!” I yelled, louder and more irritated because I needed to head back to work.

Still no dog.

Then my alarm bells started going. With the sandwich still in my hand, I started frantically calling Bear’s name, searching all over the yard for him.

And that’s when I saw it: the side gate had been left open, the bushes were trampled, and my Spidey-sense was tingling: Bear got out.

Oh God, I thought. How do I explain this to Shannon?

I ran out, sandwich still in my hand after all this time, tearing up my feet on the raspberry brambles adjacent to the house.

Hollering Bear’s name, my mind was going a mile a minute.

What happens if he gets hit by a car?

If I was a big husky, where would I go?

What happens if he takes off into the mountains and we never find him again?

Is this how I get fired?

As I rounded the corner to the front of the house, Bear wasn’t there.

Standing in the front yard freaking out and sweating profusely due to a mixture of heat and fear, I took a bite out of the sandwich that was still in my hand because, well, why not?

And that’s when I noticed that the bread was a little wet with inhuman slobber.

My initial reaction was, Oh gross, what the heck is this?

Then the little lightbulb went off in my head, and I looked behind me.

There was Bear. A little dab of peanut butter on his nose and the cheekiest grin on his face.

Instantly, my legs turned to jelly with relief.

I had no idea where he’d been hiding and, to be honest, I didn’t care. I was just happy that he found me.

Picking up and carrying the 60-pound baby with sharp teeth while he proceeded to lick my face — something I’m not a fan of — I thought back to what my dad said about not having dogs in the house and my lack of responsibility.

Maybe he had a point.

Dr. Thomas David Halbert 1937 – 2017 Dr. Thomas David Halbert, beloved husband of 58 years to Edrie Halbert, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2017, at the age of 80.

Besides his loving wife, Edrie, Tom will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Tim (Christine), Pattee Gaspard and Ken (Laura Halbert); and by his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church (958 Christie Ave., Pincher Creek) on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Roque Pereira presiding.

Crowsnest Pass Passtrak athletes medal at Track & Field Club

North American Indigenous Games Over 5,000 athletes from across North America took part in 14 sports during the weeklong North American Indigenous Games, held last month in Toronto.

Two Passtrak athletes, Paige and Ethan Richards of Pincher Creek, were members of the Alberta track and field team that competed.

Paige was entered in three individual events in the under15 girls category. She placed fourth in the 150-metre sprint with a personal-best time of 20.89 seconds. That set a new Passtrak club record for her age group.

In the high jump, she moved up one position and earned a bronze medal by clearing a lifetime best of 1.30 metres. In her third event, the long jump, she outdid herself once more by spanning a personal best of 4.41 metres for a silver medal.

Ethan was registered in the

under-20 men’s division. He competed in four individual events during the three days of track and field competition. He fell well short of his best in the long jump, managing 4.90 metres for 18th place.

He bounced back and performed extremely well in all three of his races, qualifying for the finals in each. In the 400 metres he finished fifth overall in 57.38 seconds. He earned another fifth place in the 200 metres final by clocking 24.50 seconds.

His best result of the meet came in the 100 metres, where he grabbed a bronze medal with a time of 11.83 seconds.

Both athletes will lace up their spikes one more time this summer to compete in the Alberta Indigenous Games. They will be held in Edmonton on Aug. 14 and 15.

Andrea Lynne (Penny) Oczkowski 1946 – 2017 Andrea Lynne (Penny) Oczkowski, beloved wife of John Oczkowski, passed away at the Pincher Creek hospital on July 21, 2017, at the age of 70, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Penny was born in Medicine Hat on Sept. 11, 1946, to Lawrence and Penelope Mead.

Penny is survived by her husband, John, and her three children: Ronald and his children, Alexandra and Ryan; Darren (Lara) and their children, Brayda and Isabella; Rhonda (Colin) and their children, Peyton and Morgan.

She is also survived by her brother Jack (Bev) Mead and family, and by her brother-in-law Ed (Gloria) Oczkowski and family. Penny will be remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and beloved friends as well.

Penny was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Penelope Mead; her brother Larry Mead; her sister-in-law Pat Mead; her niece Nancy Vance; Penny’s infant daughter Debra Lynn Miyada; her brother-in-law Joe Oczkowski; her brother and sister-in-law Walter and Agnes Oczkowski; her sister-in-law Elsie Wakelam.

A memorial celebration honouring Penny’s life will be held at a later date.

WildED “Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog” Stories, myths and ancient legends, including this witches’ brew recipe from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, have long characterized bats as evil creatures of the night.

But bats hardly deserve this reputation — many ecosystems would suffer greatly without the pest control and pollination services they provide.

Of the four species resident in southwestern Alberta, big brown bats and little brown bats are those most commonly encountered by people, and those to whom we owe the greatest debt. Many of the insect species eaten by bats are considered forest or agricultural pests or are a nuisance to people (such as biting insects).

Little brown bats can eat up

By Crowsnest Conservation to half their own body weight in insects each night! A typical colony of little brown bats can consume up to 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of insects during the summer.

But is the writing on the wall for these winged wonders of the night?

The three migratory species present in Alberta between early May and mid September are provincially sensitive due to potential impacts of wind developments during the fall migration period, and the little brown bat is federally endangered under the Species At Risk Act due to the impact of white-nosed syndrome.

WNS is a fungal disease that damages tissues and causes bats to wake frequently during winter hibernation, burning through precious fat reserves. The disease has decimated bat populations

in the eastern United States and Canada, killing more than six million, and is slowly spreading westward.

Unfortunately, WNS appears to have leap-frogged west, with the discovery of infected bat carcasses near Seattle last year.

Wildlife managers and biologists are now scrambling to identify locations of summer maternity colonies (where females raise their young pups) as well as important winter hibernacula for Alberta bats to protect them from the threat of WNS. Unlike eastern roosts with thousands of bats, western bats seem to congregate in much smaller numbers and thus likely many more dispersed locations. Yet these sites are largely unidentified; in Alberta, three cave hibernacula discovered in the past two winters have housed only around 300 bats.

Although most of us probably wouldn’t have opportunity to encounter bats in caves, summer roosting and maternity colony sites are typically warm locations that promote growth of the young, including buildings (attics, rafters, old barns, under siding), bridges, tree crevices or under bark, rock crevices and, of course, bat houses.

Conflicts occur most often when roosts are found in occupied buildings. Bats do not gnaw like rodents, so they won’t gnaw their way into a building or chew wiring and insulation, but the volumes of urine and feces deposited, as well as the incessant squeak of young while mothers are away, are sometimes enough to drive people “batty.”

Winged wonders of the night

Bat biologist Cori Lausen led a study at Waterton Lakes National Park five years ago. With the threat of white-nosed syndrome, the intent was to gauge the overall health of bats and the areas in the park they populate. Mist netting was used to capture the bats. Each was examined and its species, sex, age, reproductive condition, forearm length and weight were recorded. Photos show bats being processed. Many are also uncomfortable with bat presence as they can carry rabies. Incidence of rabies is very low, but any bat displaying unusual daytime behaviour should be reported to wildlife officials, and anyone experiencing a bat bite should receive immediate medical attention.

If you must exclude bats from a site, consider installing a bat house nearby before evicting them, and only exclude bats once they have left for the winter. Got Bats?

Perhaps most importantly, contribute to the conservation of these winged wonders by reporting any roosts you encounter to the Alberta Community Bat Program at roostreports@albertabats.ca.
