Catching the last splashes of summer Summer swimming in Crowsnest Pass wrapped up Monday afternoon with the Last Splash. A full house enjoyed cool waters on a hot day and a pizza party. Mayor Blair Painter thanked everyone for supporting the new outdoor pool, then joined councillors and friends in serving up pizza. Even with a shorter season, he noted that the visitor count has far surpassed seasons before. The pool is the first major recreation facility investment made in the municipality in over 40 years.

Running the mountains with teen spirit

By Shannon Robison For Anna Koevoet and Noah Schuh, there is no better thing than playing in the mountains.

The young Crowsnest Pass athletes have been racing seriously for several years and have become standouts in the running community thanks to mentorship from other runners like Ryan and Jody Peebles.

Anna says she has always done fun runs with her family.

When she was in Grade 7, she joined the trail-running program at Crowsnest Consolidated High School under Ryan’s guidance. She immediately discovered how much she loved it and was hooked.

A goal for many CCHS students is to participate on the high school team in the annual Sinister 7 ultramarathon. Jody and Ryan were the first to organize and coach these young athletes, and Erin and Andrew Fairhurst stepped in to work with the students this year.

“Anna was our first dive into junior high,” Jody says. “We weren’t sure if we could go there but she proved it was OK.” When Anna was in Grade 8, she was chosen as an alternate for the team. When one of the team members was injured, she had an opportunity to show what she could do. Anna did this by running Leg 7 in the middle of the night, with Jody as her shadow.

Anna is now a veteran of Sinister 7, having run as a member of the CCHS team five times.

after her family moved to Ontario.

She prepared as much as possible despite the lack of hills to run, and found the support she was accustomed to from Ryan and Jody was still there.

“CCHS is the only high school that consistently is able to do something like this,” Jody says. “We wouldn’t be talking about this if Brian [Gallant] and Andrew [Fairhurst] hadn’t begun sponsoring the Sinister 7 high school team.”

Noah’s interest in running goes back to the age of nine, when he joined PassTrak and began working with coach Ritch Braun.

He also joined the Isabelle Sellon School Kilometre Club.

Noah’s brother, Josh, was on the CCHS Sinister 7 team and the young runner set his sights on following in his older brother’s footsteps. He is the youngest student to make the team, running Leg 2 in his first ultramarathon and setting a CCHS record on the 16-kilometre section.

“It’s kind of been my life since then,” he says.

Noah and Anna have been Sinister 7 teammates for the past three years. Along with Sommer Hagley, Samantha Williams, Hayley Williams, Stanley Van Buul-Gustafson and Christin Wadstein, the CCHS crew finished this year’s race 33rd in the mixed category with a time of 22 hours 27 minutes 51 seconds — an amazing feat on a brutally hot day.

Their shared love of the sport has led to a strong friendship as Anna and Noah expand their horizons with new races and challenges.

“It’s not often students in Grade 12 and 9 have the opportunity to support one another,” Jody says.

“It’s cool to watch a lifelong thing develop.”

With Ryan and Jody along as their cheerleaders, the teens tackled their first solo ultramarathon — the Black Spur in Kimberley, B.C. — last month.

Noah finished the 54-kilometre trail run eighth in the men’s division and Anna finished fourth in the women’s division. With four minutes between them, Noah and Anna crossed the line 12th and 13th respectively.

Both were in uncharted territory — the farthest Noah had raced was 32 kilometres, while Anna had run 37. Noah says he had the time in, but not at race pace.

They ran together most of the race and both enjoyed the technical trail.

“Straight up, he’s way faster

than me,” Anna says.

Noah notes that a text from Andrew Fairhurst informed them that someone had anonymously paid the entry fees for them to participate. This is an example of community members supporting young people in their endeavours.

“I love how the trail-running community has reacted to them,” Jody says. “It gives me goosebumps.”

Learning how one’s body reacts during and after a race is part of training. Noah found walking difficult for several days after the Black Spur.

After a week of rest, he was at the start line of Meet the Minotaur with Anna and Jody. All agree it’s the best race they’ve done.

“It was the most badass, epic race of my life!” Jody says. “It was mentally challenging as we were constantly looking for the next orange flag without knowing what to expect.”

Noah was in the lead pack with eventual race winner Troy Misseghers.

“I wondered if I should slow down, but I kept my eye on Troy,” he says.

“There’s always a point when I think, ‘This is dumb. Why am I doing this?’ But not in the Minotaur — I’ve never felt that good during a race.”

Noah was third to cross the finish line of the inaugural race at 2:58:06, only 18 minutes behind Troy.

Anna loved the challenge of the “mental grind” and kept going with no expectations. “It was an adventure, the whole thing was glory time,” she says.

Anna finished fifth among the women while Jody was 11th.

“The amount of sheer support we get from so many people is amazing,” Anna says. “They travel to support us and youth athletics.”

Jody says she is the cheerleader, while Ryan is the driving force behind their coaching.

“Andrew Fairhurst and our community of runners play a huge role,” she adds. “It’s amazing to see the community embrace them.”

“The spirit of the race, especially one like Sinister 7, gets into your blood and you find yourself searching for that feeling all the time,” Jody says.

“Running makes me feel alive.

It reminds me of why we’re here and what my body is capable of doing and what my mind is capable of pushing my body to do.”

While Anna and Noah have thrived from their relationship with the Peebles family, Jody says

they have given just as much back and act as role models for the couple’s young daughters.

Both teens anticipate running as soloists in Sinister 7 at some point. There’s no doubt a supportive hometown crowd will be there to cheer them on when that time comes.

On Noah’s bucket list is the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run, which features an elevation change of 66,100 feet in southern Colorado’s San Juan Range. This race has an interesting finale — rather than crossing a finish line, runners must kiss the Hardrock, a picture of a ram’s head painted on a large block of stone mining debris.

Anna would like to tackle the Barkley Marathons, a 100-mile race held in the Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee. The race is limited to 40 runners and entrants must complete an essay on “Why I should be allowed to run in the Barkley,” among other requirements.

With an accumulated vertical climb of 54,200 feet, it is considered one of the more challenging ultramarathons, with about 55 per cent of the races ending with no finishers.

Jody reminds them that there is no time limit — she wants them to enjoy their passion for running in the mountains and push for new goals as their bodies are ready.

For now, Noah heads into Grade 10 at CCHS. He hopes to do some ski touring this winter with Andrew Fairhurst and Troy Misseghers.

Anna is off to study engineering at the University of Calgary and will likely participate in crosscountry running there to keep up her active lifestyle.

As they work toward individual goals, Anna and Noah will continue to run together in the mountains.

Concerns over location of Waterton visitor information centre under assessment

By Shannon Robison “Who’s trying to take your park away?” Peter Carroll asked in a North Carolina drawl.

He had noticed a gathering of folks sporting green T-shirts at the Waterton field Thursday morning and was curious to know what Save the Waterton Field was about.

After spending only a few days at Waterton, he already felt an attachment to the playground where his 5½-month-old grandson had first sat in a swing the night before.

The emotional attachment that community members and visitors have to the playground put many on guard when Parks Canada announced in March 2016 that Block 39 — the location of the playground, spraying park, tennis courts, playing field and four cottages — was the site chosen for a new visitor information centre.

Save the Waterton Field came together as people who stand firmly against the proposed VIC location. Their concerns include safety, congestion in the townsite and loss of their beloved field.

Thursday’s gathering was meant to be a show of solidarity as Jonathan Wilkinson visited Waterton and met with members of the Waterton Lakes Leaseholders Association, Improvement District No. 4, the chamber of commerce and Save the Waterton Field.

“Save our park!” they chanted as television cameras captured their passion.

Mr. Wilkinson is parliamentary secretary to the minister of environment and climate change, Catherine McKenna. As well as listening to concerns expressed by these groups, he toured sites that were considered and evaluated by Parks Canada.

Bonnie Fromm, STWF co-ordinator, says her group focused on “lack of proper process and transparency and lack of any legitimate public consultation,” in addition to

presenting Mr. Wilkinson with a 26-page summary of concerns.

She felt that Mr. Wilkinson listened carefully and that he clearly understands the concerns of those who oppose a townsite location for the VIC. “Time will tell whether he and Minister McKenna respond in a meaningful way to the concerns of the public that have been brought forward.”

For his part, Mr. Wilkinson says, “We just felt that before a final decision was made with respect to the location of the visitor centre, it was important that an elected official went to Waterton to hear the concerns and the thoughts that those folks had, and other groups in the community, and to ensure that all of the issues had been fully canvassed and to determine if there were any other issues that need to be considered before a final decision is actually made.”

After listening to the concerns raised, Mr. Wilkinson says he will now step back and look at them independently to determine if there are “issues that we need to dig into more.”

Following that process, he will make a recommendation to Minister McKenna. “We’d like to be in the position to make a decision within the next month or two,” he says. “Ultimately we will need to come up with a decision about whether we proceed at the site in town or we proceed elsewhere.”

“It’s important for us to actually get going on this because the current site is not really that workable given the volume of folks that are now coming to Waterton,” Mr. Wilkinson adds.

This in itself is a concern to some. Janet Rolfson and Brian Dennis of St. Albert visit the park every year and say there are only two things to do — hike and just be.

Waterton under evacuation alert

By Caitlin Clow Waterton Lakes National Park was placed under an evacuation alert as of 6:26 Tuesday evening, as the wildfire burning in British Columbia’s Flathead Valley has expanded into the northwestern corner of the national park in Alberta near Sage Pass.

According to Parks Canada, the evacuation alert is a pre-emptive action as there is no immediate threat.

In case of an evacuation Those affected are encouraged to prepare essential items, such as medications, important documents, keepsakes and photographs.

Firewood, propane tanks and other burnables should be relocated away from homes.

A plan, transportation and a muster point to meet with family or co-workers should be designated in case of separation if an evacuation is called.

Accommodation should be arranged if possible, but in the case of an evacuation, reception centres will be opened if necessary.

Residents of Waterton will be contacted by phone or by park staff if an evacuation is ordered. In the event of an evacuation, residents must vacate the park within one hour of formal notice. RCMP and Parks Canada wardens will be on-site to provide security during the evacuation period.

Entrance to the park will be closed to public traffic and admittance to evacuated areas will be permitted only for emergency vehicles.

By Monday evening, about half a hectare was burning in the popular tourist destination and Parks Canada responded with two helicopters targeting the spot fires.

“A Parks Canada national incident management team is on site in the national park, along with three initial attack crews and five

helicopters,” said John Stoesser, Parks Canada communications officer.

“The fire management team is assessing containment options, and crews are working on facility protection, using water pumps and sprinklers,” he said a statement.

The fire was first spotted by Parks Canada from the sky on Saturday. It was reported that the fire in the Kishinena Creek area in B.C. was about five hectares in size, but due to continued heat and dry weather with periods of high winds, the fire spread east towards the national park.

According to Parks Canada, the Kenow Mountain fire has expanded over 4,500 hectares.

Provincial parks also affected On holiday Monday, Alberta Parks evacuated Chinook Provincial Recreation Area and Livingstone Falls amongst others in the Calgary Forest Area — zones 1 to 3.

In a Facebook post, Minister of Environment and Parks Shannon Phillips stated the wildfire conditions in these areas “are well past the extreme level.”

“In these conditions, wildfires can move very fast, and embers can create new fires several kilometres away,” she wrote. “Forecasts indicate a new fire can reach up to 45 hectares in size in under an hour.”

Lynx Creek campgrounds, the Castle provincial parks, and the Oldman River North Provincial Recreation Area and Group Camp are included in the park closures.

Castle Mountain Resort released a statement Monday noting the fire in B.C. is still about 20 kilometres away from the resort and a full-scale evacuation is not being considered.

However, the closure of the Castle provincial parks does have implications for those who call the resort home.

Those who reside at the resort full time will be allowed access to their home by permit only and overnight stays are permitted.

Meanwhile, those with recreational properties can apply for a permit and will be granted limited access — five consecutive hours every 72 hours between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Permits can be obtained through Pincher Creek Emergency Services or the Blairmore ranger station with proof of residence.

The closures in the Calgary Forest Area and Waterton will remain in place until further notice.

Maureen Bevan has Maureen Bevan stepped into Advertising Sales the role as full-time advertising sales representative.

Many of our clients already know her, as Maureen began looking after Crowsnest Pass sales last spring.

Her position has expanded to include managing accounts for all of our advertisers.

Tuesday was her first day in the office and she is eager to get to know our clients and put her talents to work for you.

On the editorial side of things, one paper’s loss has become our gain. Caitlin Clow has filled an interim position as multimedia editor and will be with us until the end of October.

Friday was her final day at the Pincher Creek Echo and she was on the job here Tuesday.

If you happen to read both

papers and have a keen eye for detail, you’ll have noticed she has articles in each.

Caitlin’s intent was to return to Calgary, but she has made a pit stop here to help out

“There’s a finite amount of land and they come expecting bells and whistles,” Janet says.

She is concerned by the amount of advertising she sees beckoning people to come to Waterton and feels the park is already too busy, for the wrong reasons.

“You can’t achieve serenity in Banff,” Janet adds.

In clarifying his position, Mr. Wilkinson says, “Making the right decision means not only the right decision for folks in the community, but ultimately

Parks Canada has a mandate of ensuring that it is the right decision for Canadians generally.”

Many share Brian and Janet’s concern of Waterton losing what makes it special and being promoted too heavily as a tourist destination.

“The primary purpose of a national park is to enable Canadians to visit and to connect with nature,” Mr. Wilkinson says.

With consideration of a community located within the park, he says, “It’s important that we reflect on the needs of that local community, but ultimately

it is the needs of the park that are primary.”

Bonnie disagrees.

“We feel that the needs of the Canadian public are the top priority,” she says. “We feel that we presented a very compelling case as to why a townsite visitor centre would not meet the needs of the Canadian public.”

She encourages those with interest to visit www. savethewatertonfield.com, where the summary presented to Mr. Wilkinson can be found in its entirety.

“We were happy Mr. Wilkinson was able to visit the park and

meet with stakeholders, and will let his comments speak to those meetings here,” says John Stoesser, partnering, engagement and communications officer with Waterton Lakes Field Unit.

No one appears to debate the need of a new visitor information centre. For the time being, all sides of the argument as to the location of that centre know their concerns have been heard.

SGB Fitbodies helps set goals and fulfil dreams

By Tyler Ryan Sheryl Baker, owner of SGB Fitbodies in Pincher Creek, has many goals and dreams and she hopes to push others toward meeting their fitness aspirations.

Within the walls of the gym, Sheryl is adamant about building a welcoming and judgmentfree environment for everyone regardless of their fitness level.

“It’s very fun and relaxed,” she says.

Newcomers can be a bit intimidated or uncertain about how to get the most out of their workouts when they’re starting, but the team at SGB will do anything they can to accommodate everybody’s needs.

“That’s kind of my big dream and that’s what I’ve always wanted — to create that kind of environment,” Sheryl says. “I think we’ve achieved that so far.”

Sheryl knows she couldn’t have made it this far without the people who have supported her along the way.

Acting manager Suzanne Teran is one of these people. Sheryl says Suzanne “took the reigns where I couldn’t because I was just too busy with so many things.”

Sheryl is “such a visionary and she’s so determined,” Suzanne says. “She sees [something] and she wants it and we just need to get there, so keeping up with her vision has been the most challenging part.

“But believing in her and knowing that we’ll get there, and watching her accomplish [her goals], has brought the whole team to work really hard for her.”

Sheryl has been involved in Pincher Creek’s fitness community as an instructor and trainer for many years, and many of her past programs and classes have been incorporated into her new business.

The SGB Fitbodies story starts on Dec. 2, 2016. After working in the community, Sheryl decided she wanted to follow her dream of opening a gym tailored to people of all fitness levels.

Choosing and renovating a space that would be adequate was the first step. The SGB team was under a lot of pressure to be open for the wave of people who wanted to get fit in the new year.

The would-be gym needed a fresh coat of paint and the walls needed to be patched. Piles of

equipment, ranging from dumbbells to exercise bikes, also needed to be set up.

“We were up and running by the 9th of January and we’ve been going pretty strong since,” Sheryl says.

Next, she wanted to add a smoothie bar. With strong support from Suzanne, the first week of July was when smoothies started getting cranked out.

“I invented all of the smoothies and that was really fun,” Suzanne says. “I would make them during a class and then have people sample and rate them.”

Suzanne also played an integral role in nailing down the logistics of the smoothie bar and background processes.

“I’ve made countless spreadsheets,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve basically been Sheryl’s right-hand woman throughout the process of the smoothie bar.”

Sheryl says Ali Thibert has also been a big part of the SGB story.

“Ali just messaged me when she found out that I was opening this place and I felt like she wanted to be a part of it,” Sheryl says. “She’s been an amazing part of it and a huge help to me.”

Ali runs a few classes at the gym and has been an extra pair of hands wherever Sheryl needs them.

With the rush of the January fitness cycle, coupled with the extra

work needed for the smoothie bar, the SGB team didn’t get a chance to celebrate their opening.

That changed Aug. 23 when the gym doors were flung open for a real grand opening and open house, which Sheryl says went “really, really well.”

“We had a lot of new people coming in and we had a really fun day.”

Looking ahead, Sheryl is working towards getting her own brand of supplements and merchandise onto the market.

“I hope to get into some natural food and have that available as well,” she says.

She’s also getting a website set up to work with clients who would like assistance with workouts or nutrition planning but may not be able to make it to the gym.

Currently, there are a few major programs that Sheryl runs.

The first is a 12-week metabolic precision program focused on nutrition, lifestyle changes and the science behind metabolism.

“You don’t count calories and it’s not restrictive,” she says. “It’s not about weight per se, it’s about making your body healthier.”

SGB also offers a movement improvement program that is specifically designed for people with chronic issues or injuries that affect mobility. Sheryl says movement improvement tends to be softer

fitness and can be beneficial for seniors.

There are two other programs offered called FIRE and ICE. FIRE — which stands for Focused Intense Resistance Exercise — is a 12-week strength-training program. FIRE starts with lower weights and every week the weights get heavier so those enrolled can progressively build up their strength.

Sheryl says some people who come to the FIRE program may have never touched a weight in their lives, and she uses an example of participants starting off by deadlifting a training bar that may weigh five or 10 pounds.

“By the end of [the program], they’re actually lifting a regular bar and feeling really confident and really good,” she says.

ICE is a drop-in program that focuses on breaking a sweat through intense cardio exercise with circuit or step training.

Sheryl says, “Every single time you come, you’ll never get the same class.”

“I learned that you can’t do it all at once, but that doesn’t mean your dreams aren’t going to happen,” she says. “You just need to be a little more patient.”

Teachers and other school staff were back on the clock last week and classes begin this week for most students.

Canyon School, Pincher Creek Canyon School welcomes five new members to its team. Paul Pichurski has landed the position of principal after working at Isabelle Sellon School in Crowsnest Pass.

Canyon also welcomes Auralea Boldt as an educational assistant, Derek Shackleford as a physical education teacher, Grade 5 teacher Barbara-Ann Hession and Grade 6 teacher Sarah Duncan.

“We’re here to support students and student learning,” Mr. Pichurski says. “I’m excited to be able to play that role in a new community, and to get to know students as learners and get to know families, and to be a part of their journey of learning.”

Canyon also has daycare, preschool and after-school programs available. They offer a Reggio approach to learning that sees children play and use their natural curiosity to learn.

The kindergarten class will offer Reggio learning as well.

School started Tuesday, with a flag-raising ceremony at 10:25 a.m.

Last year, ATB Financial donated $1,500 to Canyon to help pay for new playground equipment. Mr. Pichurski and assistant principal Jessica Ames are very thankful for this donation. It was matched by the Canyon School Booster Society and, after the first assembly on Friday, students will have a chance to check out the new equipment.

Sept. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m., is meetthe-teacher night.

School council will meet Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. and all parents are invited to attend.

Svetlana Chmakova, author of the book Awkward, will be at the school on Sept. 21.

Crowsnest Consolidated also welcomes 13 international students from Germany, Spain and Colombia. Hayley Fast and Meghan Tarcon will be returning from their exchange in Villarrica, Chile, at the end of September.

A group of high school students will travel to Finland for an exchange in October and there are plans to join up with Livingstone School students to visit China during spring break.

Deanna Fidelack, assistant principal, says the CCHS administration team is more than happy to chat with parents and receive feedback from the community.

She adds that CCHS is looking for members to sit on parent council, which holds its first meeting Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.

Ms. Fidelack says the school is also looking for more members to be part of the academic and athletic society. This group meets Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.

CCHS is very active on Facebook and monthly newsletters are spread through this social media channel.

Ms. Fidelack encourages parents and students to like and follow the school on Facebook.

Horace Allen School, Crowsnest Pass At Horace Allen School, Jen Stickney is returning from maternity leave to her role as a learning support teacher.

“Other than that, my staff is exactly the same and we haven’t had significant changes for the first year in a long time,” says principal Elaine Garner.

The school has received a nutrition grant but more information about that will come out when details have been finalized.

Children going into kindergarten will have a staggered start and will head to class after the Sept. 5 opening date.

A back-to-school barbecue is tentatively set for Sept. 14.

Meipsy Shackleford comes to Isabelle Sellon as the new assistant principal. Megan Hrtzak is also a new addition and Susan Koentges is returning to the school.

They will teach a Grade 4/5 combined class.

Marnie Davidson, newly appointed principal at ISS, says incoming students will be able to participate in break-out groups that will give them additional learning opportunities.

“Those are options for students to explore beyond the core curriculum,” she says.

“It taps into art, culinary things, carpentry, and outdoor pursuits. It provides options for students to explore some of their own talents.”

A welcome-back assembly and a barbecue were held Tuesday.

Livingstone School, Lundbreck Livingstone School welcomes four new staff members this year.

Taylor Cahoon will teach junior and senior high English.

Larissa Wolbert and Jamie Young have been taken on as educational assistants, and Alanna Whitaker will work as a career practitioner at Livingstone and at Matthew Halton High School and Crowsnest Consolidated High School.

The school is entering the third year of its improvement plan and principal Chad Jensen says staff “will be focusing again on personalizing education and providing our students innovative learning opportunities.”

“We are also expanding from three Sabre Days to four this year, which gives our students additional learning opportunities in the outdoors, the arts, career planning and experience in design learning,” he says.

This will be the second year of operation for the Livingstone Ski Academy and the program has expanded to accommodate 50 student athletes. Nine international students will attend Livingstone through the LSA program.

A welcome-back open house and barbecue at the school is set for Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m.

Matthew Halton High School, Pincher Creek Matthew Halton High School welcomes three new staff members this fall.

Rebecca Riley will work with junior high students and also take charge of the band.

Colton Garner comes to Matthew Halton as the new fabrication and welding teacher, and Alanna Whitaker has

been taken on a new career practitioner.

Assistant principal Greg Freer says the Grade 10 English and social studies classes will be combined as a humanities class. Mr. Freer and Clair Hockley will teach the new course.

Many students gripe “Why do I need to learn this?” when it comes to certain subjects like math, so Mr. Freer says the Math 10-3 and construction class will also be combined to give students the opportunity to apply math in a practical setting.

Students in either of the combined classes will get credits for both subjects.

Ty Provost started at Matthew Halton last year as a success coach and will be back again. He will work with students to help them overcome emotional or communication barriers they may face during the school year. The school may also offer equestrian workshops or therapy for students.

Mr. Freer is excited to confirm that both Skills Canada and experiential learning week will be coming back again this year.

“We’re looking forward to working with the community again and continuing to give back with some of our projects and partnerships, and we’re looking forward to another great year,” he says.

St. Michael’s School, Pincher Creek St Michael’s School welcomes four new staff members: teacher Cheryl Percival, custodian Trevor Clinton, librarian Alice Flecha and associate principal Karen Schmidt.

Don Kuchison retired as principal at St. Michael’s last year, and Tina Delinte assumes the position this year.

Administrator Tracey Young says “it feels like everything is new” at the school.

St. Michael’s recently underwent a modernization project, with new furniture and equipment added to the school. Landscaping at the facility is ongoing.

Mrs. Young says renovations are winding down but there will still be a few more things to be worked on after school starts on Thursday.

On Sept. 15 there will be a welcome-back breakfast, and on Sept. 28 a barbecue will also help kick off the school year.

A rededication ceremony will be held Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the modernization of St. Michael’s.

Finally, as renovations are still in progress, Mrs. Young asks parents to please be patient with the work.

“We’re really excited and we think things are going to be great,” she says.
