Pincher Creek votes Mayor Don Anderberg re-elected

By Caitlin Clow After a seemingly short, sweet and quiet — but tense — town election campaign, Pincher Creek voters exercised their right and cast their votes Monday. The results came back later that evening with a few changes to the team of seven.

Don Anderberg was elected mayor for another term with 701 votes, defeating Dianne Gray who received 330.

“I want to thank all the people who chose to vote for me today, and I’m honoured to be your mayor,” Mr. Anderberg said in a speech at Salvage Solutions following the election.

“I will always work hard to live up to the responsibility and trust that you have placed in me.”

“I will continue to focus on positive results for Pincher Creek with the help of you, the citizens, town administration, municipal employees and, of course, council,” he said.

Mayor Anderberg gave thanks to his former council while

offering kind words to his new colleagues — Scott Korbett, Sussanne O’Rourke and Brian McGillivray.

“Without a doubt, this last council was the hardest working,” he said.

Incumbent councillor Mark Barber will join the table during the next regular council meeting after receiving 787 votes, alongside fellow incumbents Wayne Elliott, who received 844, and Lorne Jackson, who received 765.

Mr. Korbett had 804 votes, Mr. McGillivray 682 and Mrs. O’Rourke 423.

A recount was requested Tuesday by candidate Dianne Gray.

While returning officer Lou Burnham said a recount isn’t required according to Municipal Affairs, a recount will be done to ensure any concerns are put to rest.

Votes cast for the mayor’s office only will be re-enumerated at 8 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 18).

By Caitlin Clow The 2017 election for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek was dynamic, with candidates challenging incumbents in three divisions — something that hasn’t happened in years. Only two saw competition in the last two elections.

The unofficial results rolled in quickly after polls closed Monday night, showing a few changes to the council table.

Bev Everts won a seat against incumbent Division 3 councillor Garry Marchuk and candidate Tom Judd with 112 votes.

Terry Yagos claimed his spot once again with 144 votes from Division 5 residents against former Pincher Creek mayor Ernie Olsen.

Rick Lemire, whose platform concentrated on open communication, infrastructure and road maintenance, was elected representative of Division 2 with 95 votes, bumping out incumbent councillor Fred Schoening.

Reeve Brian Hammond maintained his position by acclamation in Division 4, along with Coun. Quentin Stevick in Division 1.

Crowsnest Pass council changes

By Caitlin Clow Mayor Blair Painter will be joined by some new faces after Monday’s municipal election in Crowsnest Pass.

Incumbent councillors Dave Filipuzzi, Marlene Anctil, Dean Ward and Doreen Glavin will rejoin the mayor, who won by acclamation.

But, after a close race, Crowsnest Pass will also have two new voices in its municipal discussions. Gordon Lundy claimed a spot at the council table after receiving 966 votes, and Lisa Sygutek earned her place with 954.

Mr. Filipuzzi received 1,143 votes; Ms. Anctil, 1,059 votes; Mr. Ward, 1,056; and Ms. Glavin, 1,022.

Candidate Leslie Edith McCallum received 840 votes but was not elected.

At 12:30 a.m. it was announced that John McKee and Brad Tonne, two incumbents, would keep their spots representing Ward 1, which covers

Nanton, Stavely, Claresholm and Granum.

Mr. McKee secured his spot with 1,320 votes and Mr. Toone followed with 1,098.

The Crowsnest Pass, Lundbreck and Cowley region, or Ward 2, will see a new face with Gregory Alan Long securing a position with 841 votes.

Incumbent representative Clara Yagos will join

him after earning 702 votes.

Ward 3, covering Fort Macleod and Pincher Creek, will be represented by incumbent Lori Hodges, who received 1,087 votes. She will be joined with Lacey Lynn Poytress and Jim Burdett, who claimed 1,009 and 867 votes, respectively.

Practice polls create lifelong voters

By Caitlin Clow Over 80,000 students from 758 schools across Alberta cast votes last Thursday and Friday in their version of the municipal elections. The Grade 6 class from Canyon School in Pincher Creek was among them.

When the results of the Student Vote rolled in at 8 p.m. Monday evening, the students of Mrs. Duncan’s class had elected Don Anderberg as mayor with 27 votes.

Mark Barber received 28 votes; Wayne Elliott, 30; Scott Korbett, 28; Doug Thornton, 24; Lorne Jackson, 24; and Tim Blake, 24.

Dan Allan, director of content for Civix Canada, says students who participate in this type of parallel election at a young age are more likely to vote when they turn 18.

And it doesn’t stop there, he says.

“Research shows if a young person votes when they turn 18, they will vote as a lifelong habit.”

Sarah Duncan, Grade 6 teacher at Canyon School, jumped at the opportunity to get her class involved.

“It was such a hands-on way to teach them all how to vote,” she says.

The Student Vote program is available for grades 3 to 12, and the curriculum is tailored to each level. Teachers are supported with materials from Civix Canada, including posters, polling stations and ballots, to educate their students about the various roles of government.

Mrs. Duncan also encouraged her students to research candidates and decipher the differences between facts and opinions.

“Instead of me teaching and saying ‘These are all the candidates,’ I asked how they will find information when they’re adults.”

Grade 6 student Abi Rigaux says it was important to research each candidate carefully.

“You have to know who you’re voting for,” she says.

Abi also acted as a deputy returning officer during the mock vote, along with peer Maryn Christensen. Together, they were responsible for setting up the polls and ensuring every voter followed the instructions closely.

Zakk Harper volunteered as a presiding officer. His responsibility, he says, was to ensure the ballots were folded properly to protect privacy.

The students from Mrs. Duncan’s class say they look forward to voting for real when they turn 18.

Municipal elections are notorious for having low voter turnout.

According to Municipal Affairs Alberta, in 2013 only 876 of the 2,804 eligible voters in the town of Pincher Creek cast a vote. The municipal district only saw 381 citizens exercise

their right to vote.

“Turnout for local votes like this is really low, when you actually think it should be higher,” Dan says. “Local government has a higher impact on your daily lives, every day.”

There is sort of a trickle-up effect with the Student Votes program, he says. During the 2015 provincial elections, Civix Canada hosted a mock vote and students would go home to talk politics with their parents.

As a result, he says, a lot of parents who didn’t typically vote were more likely to mark their ballots because their children were so interested.

Mrs. Duncan says she would definitely try this again, but would like to include more exposure to candidates through forums and council meetings.

Dan says Student Votes will be available for classrooms during the next provincial election, to be held in May 2019 or sooner.

“Teachers are great, and they continue to be involved,” he says.

Winds blowing at more than 100 kilometres per hour Tuesday afternoon aided a grass fire that ignited west of Coleman. A number of residents were evacuated from their homes by early evening. The cause remained undetermined as crews continued their firefighting efforts overnight.

Out-of-control fire forces Coleman evacuation

By Caitlin Clow Strong winds and dry conditions caused a grass fire in Crowsnest Pass to grow exponentially and out of control in a matter of hours.

Mayor Blair Painter said the municipality’s fire department — with help from mutual aid partners within Pincher Creek Emergency Services — and additional RCMP resources and Alberta Wildfire were there to help battle the blaze.

Calls to Beaver Mines, Lundbreck, Cowley and Pincher Creek Fire were made at about 3:55 p.m. seeking assistance.

The cause was undetermined as of Tuesday night, said Mayor Painter.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued before 4:30 p.m. for residents on Willow Drive. The alert from Alberta Emergency Alert stated that all residents within Coleman should be prepared to leave on short notice.

The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass declared a state of local emergency at 5:43 p.m.

Willow Drive, McLaren Ridge, Carbondale Trailer Court and MacGillivary Flats were all

evacuated by 6:30 p.m.

Most residing between Coleman and Cowley were left in the dark for a number of hours while Fortis worked to restore utilities to the affected communities. Reports of lights turning back on started at about 11:30 p.m.

Many businesses and community members offered support in any way they could.

The Rum Runner in Blairmore offered water and use of restrooms to those stranded, Pincher Creek SPCA offered to take in displaced pets, Cloud Ridge Ranch was prepared to accept displaced livestock, and Vertical Church in Pincher Creek opened its doors to evacuees.

As night fell, temperatures cooled and the fire area received some precipitation, the Municipality

of Crowsnest Pass released a statement saying minimal fire activity was expected overnight but insisted residents be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

No further evacuation orders were issued. If new orders were deemed necessary, the municipality said emergency personnel would alert residents by going door-todoor.

Livingstone Range School Division announced that all Crowsnest Pass schools would be closed Wednesday due to the local state of emergency still in place for the communities.

Mayor Painter told Shootin’ the Breeze that Alberta Wildfire was remaining on scene overnight Tuesday, to continue the firefighting efforts.

My daughter laughed at me Sunday afternoon when we were looking at the week ahead, planning meals and making a grocery list.

This task is always a challenge thanks to my unpredictable work schedule, but the week actually had fewer calendar entries than usual.

There was voting, a bank appointment, an election party, a doctor’s appointment, a chamber of commerce meeting, tea at Vista Village, dinner theatre, setup for the Awards of Excellence and the event itself, M’Artys Market, skateboarding in Lundbreck, a hockey game and Russell DeCarle in concert.

This doesn’t include several things running in conflict with those same events but all around, it appeared to be a manageable week.

The most amazing thing was the

big blank spot on my daytimer page — aside from a regular work day, there was nothing written in at all for Tuesday.

This is where Jaiden’s teasing comes in.

Despite my best efforts, a life with routine to it is difficult to come by, thanks to the line of work I’ve chosen and the things I enjoy doing on the side.

To have a weekday sitting wide open on the calendar seemed unthinkable!

She told me it would never happen — that something crazy would take over the day.

Who could have known?

All of my staff have put in a tremendous amount of effort and extra time to provide coverage of the Kenow fire and the municipal and school board elections.

Caitlin Clow and I, in particular, have managed to find humour in the fact that a week or 10 days somehow turned into one long, blurry day.

While none of it will be forgotten, some days it already seems like it was so long ago and so surreal that you wonder if it all really happened.

The thought of a production Tuesday with no other pressures led me to become a bit lackadaisical.

When my Internet acted up at home Sunday evening, I chose to turn my computer off. After all, there was

High winds and dry conditions led a grass fire to spread rapidly, endangering the town of Coleman on Tuesday.

“It’s what we’re here for,” said Chris Ney, pastor of Vertical Church.

“Really, that’s what it comes down to. Your community has a need, so you open the doors and serve where you can.”

By 9:30 p.m., about 44 evacuees had registered with the reception centre in Pincher Creek. Many of those called in to inform officials they were safe and out of the danger zones.

Chris said that when he heard about the fire in the neighbouring community, he called David Green, facilitator for Family and Community Support Services, and asked if they should prepare to open.

By 6 p.m., the church was named by the Municipality of

Crowsnest Pass as the official evacuation centre.

“We’ve got the space, the facilities, showers, kitchen, coffee, offices for staff to go hide into and do their thing,” Chris said. “It works out good.”

One family arrived in a camper van, simply looking for a place to hook up.

The staff at Vertical immediately made the space for them to park and plug in.

Only last month, the church offered hospitality to those affected by the Kenow wildfire that burned through Waterton Lakes National Park and into the Municipal District of Pincher Creek.

Chris said the staff isn’t in need of any donations at this time.

But, if the situation worsens, or things change, they will make an announcement to the public through their social media.

“We still have a lot of stuff from last time,” he said, acknowledging the outpour of community support for the victims of the Kenow wildfire.

On Monday I sidestepped my normal tasks because, after all, I had extra time on my hands. Not only that, Caitlin was revved up to do our online election coverage, which meant I had time to go to the party in Pincher Creek.

Candidates running for both town and MD council seats in Pincher Creek and their supporters were invited by Bev Everts to a gathering hosted by Michael and Michelle Spencer at Salvage Solutions.

It was a great idea and many chose to gather and await the election results together. Knowing that things were looked after at the office, and that the next day was one with no pressure, I stayed and enjoyed the enthusiastic atmosphere.

I came back to the office afterward for a bit — just long enough to be sure I had all of the ad design and layout finished. I went home feeling good with knowledge that I had a full day ahead to finish up the stories I had assigned to myself.

All good!

But, as happened just over a month ago, our content took a drastic shift due to fire. This time the threat was, and still is, to

Crowsnest Pass.

By the time I made it to Coleman on Tuesday afternoon, firefighters had already doused a grass fire beside the tracks, near Bushtown.

I had only been back to my desk in Pincher Creek for about 15 minutes when we learned of the out-of-control fire burning west of Coleman.

As with the Kenow fire, Caitlin was here much of the night generating current content, and Cary Robison, who looks after our editing, was up as well as the final pages of the paper came together.

Hopefully in the light of morning, as you’re reading this column, things will be in a much better state.

Sharing wildfire news is not how I anticipated filling the blank spot in my daytimer. I guess Jaiden was correct in saying there’s no such thing as a free day.

It is ironic that immediately on the heels of Fire Prevention Week there is chaos across the southern part of the province due to windfuelled grass fires.

Thank you, again, to all emergency services personnel.

We’ve seen Kenow behave out of the norm. Be smart, be prepared and be safe.

Pincher Creek awarded 50th anniversary of Southern Alberta Summer Games

By Brenda Shenton Pincher Creek will host the 50th anniversary of the Southern Alberta Summer Games in July 2019.

Members of the Southern Alberta Recreation Association were in town last Thursday to tour the facilities and hear the bid on hosting. The community hosted the games in 1970, 1985, 2004 and 2014.

Pincher Creek’s Summer Games Society, made of up local volunteers, put the community name into the bidding for the 2019 Games.

In her presentation to SARA, Diane Burt Stuckey, director of community services, highlighted that “The first Southern Alberta Summer Games was held in Pincher Creek in 1970, with approximately 1,200 athletes participating in what was intended to be an annual grassroots sporting festival.

“The Games have run every year since then, and Pincher Creek would be very proud to host the 50th year of the Summer Games, back home where it all began.”

Diane went on to explain: “The 2014 Games hosted by the Town and MD of Pincher Creek were a great success, with 2,098 athletes

and 164 coaches participating in 23 sports and cultural events. Over 350 volunteers and 75 officials assisted during the four-day event and they were integral to the success of these Games.

“We were very proud to have 440 local athletes participate in the Games and at opening ceremonies.”

After the facilities tour, Mayor Don Anderberg and Reeve Brian Hammond both spoke of the strong volunteer base prevalent in the area. They agreed that hosting the Games is an excellent way to show the greater region what the town and the MD have to offer.

Doug Thornton shared a personal story about developing the seed of the idea for the Games in 1969.

His father, Ken Thornton, at the time chairman of the recreation board, along with Bob Toney, who was the MD reeve, listened to the suggestion of town recreation director Max Gibb, who thought it would be a great idea to get everybody together in southern Alberta.

And the Games were born.

Doug said it was the very first regional games in Canada and that he is proud of that.

Hall of Fame for his contributions to the promotion of amateur sport. He can also be seen on occasion dropping in to visit the Games, as he did in 2014 when he attended the opening ceremonies in Pincher Creek.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s event, SARA co-chairperson Bonnie Ellis received a rousing round of applause when she announced the committee had decided to award the Games to Pincher Creek, to bring them back to where it all began.

The closing remarks in the printed presentation to SARA sum it up this way: “Pincher Creek has successfully hosted four Southern Alberta Summer Games and we are well positioned to host

another. We look forward to this event, which builds volunteerism, sport development and community pride.

“We would be very pleased to host the 2019 Games to showcase our community, but even more so, we are so excited to bring the Games back to Pincher Creek, where we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of this remarkable sporting and cultural festival!

“P.S. We know who lit the torch at the first Southern Alberta Summer Games.”

As someone who participated in the first Games in 1970, and who watched her children participate throughout the years and then her grandchildren in 2014, it’s kind of hard to wipe the smile off my face.

Arts and Drafts: a perfect combo

By Caitlin Clow There is something so natural about bringing food, drink and art together under one roof, and the Lebel Mansion and Allied Arts Council in Pincher Creek blended these elements flawlessly Oct. 6 in their first-ever Arts and Drafts fundraising event.

“They all have different elements of creativity,” executive director Stacey McRae explained. “It’s always good to mix some food and drinks with a little bit of art.”

Five craft breweries from the region, including Lundbreck’s own Oldman River Brewery, provided samples throughout the night as patrons tried 12 homemade soups from bowls handcrafted by the pottery guild.

The large crowd roamed the two floors of the mansion, listening to the musical stylings of Allied Arts president James Van Leeuwen, Sid Marty and Yvan Lebel, imbibing delicious craft beers and discussing the art of Rosanna Marmont and Billie Rae Busby.

“Rosanna is a huge name in Alberta right now,” Stacey said. “She

definitely has a lot to say in her art.”

About 110 of the handcrafted bowls were sold, with only a handful left at the end of the night.

“This was an event we’ve been crafting in our minds for quite a while,” Stacey said.

The event was a huge success, drawing a wide audience of both familiar and new faces. Overall, more than $4,000 was raised for Lebel’s extensive adult and children’s programming, and for maintenance costs of the historical and iconic building.

“A big thank you goes out to all of our volunteers, and everyone who came to support us and hopefully had a great time,” she said.

Next, the Allied Arts Council will continue running its stellar programming that keeps both children and adults alike engaged in the arts. More events are being pencilled into the schedule, including one planned for the Parade of Lights.

For those who missed out on the fun earlier this month, don’t fret.

Stacey said Arts and Drafts will have a second go-around next year.

Challenging the Canadian identity through landscape

Rosanna Marmont challenges her audience by painting the “ugliness” that many artists avoid.

By Caitlin Clow Infinite fields of yellow and green meeting endless Alberta blue skies is the archetype this carcass-loving painter seeks to break down.

You may still catch a glimpse of this in Rosanna Marmont’s paintings.

But, you will have difficulty feeling the peaceful serenity with the abandoned, dilapidated trailer park in the foreground.

Over 20 curious art aficionados were forced to question what they know about prairie landscapes as

they carefully examined the raw and intricate work of the New Zealandborn, Alberta-raised artist.

“The way we depict landscape is how we want to see it rather than how it actually is,” Rosanna explained.

“The way we represent landscape is how advertisements drew immigrants to the Prairies.”

“I want to make them [the audience] uncomfortable!” Rosanna said.

Reframing scenes to include factories, trailers and other “ugly” but common landscape features is how Rosanna exposes the truth, she told the audience at her talk during the Arts & Drafts fundraising event on Oct. 6.

“As Canadians, the landscape is a very important part of how we make our identity,” she said, pointing to the Group of Seven as examples.

But, artists tend to ignore or crop out the pieces that show life, industry, death and other prairie realities.

Rosanna’s art was featured at the Calgary Stampede. There, she said,

she received mixed reviews and few serious inquiries for purchase.

She showcased a painting of a rope-tying event. Only, in her rendition, she cropped out the cowboys taking the strung-up calf out of context.

“The cowboy justifies this way of life,” she said. Without them, “we stop thinking about why we’re doing these things.”

Rosanna said she is by no means an activist for animal rights or climate change. However, her paintings have given a voice to some serious issues.

She recalled snapping a photograph of a woman outside the Calgary Stampede, protesting for animal rights. She completed her portrait of the subject, and just last month, she met the woman.

“She said ‘Thank you for giving me a voice,’ ” Rosanna said. “When you do a painting, you give it [an issue] status. You’re saying this is important.”

Afternoon flames near Bushtown quickly brought under control Crowsnest Pass Fire/Rescue responded to a grass fire Tuesday afternoon in Coleman. Cause has not yet been confirmed. Firefighters barely had time to catch their breath before being called to a large grass fire west of Coleman, which that was still burning out of control in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Air Cadets: more than military

By Erin Fairhurst Evelyne Huseby, the sponsoring committee adviser for our local Air Cadets 859 Squadron, was never a cadet herself. Her husband and sons were, though, and thanks to their positive experiences, she’s a believer.

“I’m the biggest singer of this song,” she says.

Evelyne relocated to Pincher Creek from Lacombe a year ago, and has taken on the role of helping Squadron 859 with increasing recruitment and awareness.

“We have a serious lack of cadets right now,” she says. “We need to get the numbers up so that the squadron doesn’t get stood down.”

Being an air cadet doesn’t mean you’re destined for a career in the military, a fact Evelyne emphatically stresses.

“It’s absolutely not about going into the military,” she says. “It’s about teaching our youth to be great community members.”

Ages 12 to 18 are encouraged to check out one of the two Air Cadets open houses scheduled for both Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

This Wednesday, the Crowsnest Pass open house takes place at the Blairmore Legion from 6 to 8 p.m. The Pincher Creek open house takes place Oct. 26 at the Pincher Creek Legion, also from 6 to 8 p.m.

Youths interested in building their wilderness and survival skills are encouraged to consider Air Cadets, as are those interested in aircraft, gliding and flight skills.

“If they have a heartbeat and red blood, I’ll take them,” says Evelyne with a laugh. In all seriousness, however, she adds that Air Cadets is a great program for young people looking to find their way.

“It teaches self-respect and discipline,” she says. “It gives them enough understanding about themselves that they don’t start to go down the wrong path.”

With the Crowsnest Pass First Scouts program recently shutting down, Evelyne says promoting Air Cadets and everything it has to offer — including several scholarship opportunities — is important now more than ever.

“We’re losing places to keep these kids safe,” she says.

Currently the program has 11 participants enrolled, but Evelyne says she’d like to see the number grow to at least 20.

The 859 Squadron meets once a week for mandatory training and programming, and then offers several complementary activities, such as hiking, gliding and parade opportunities.

Peewee Thunder report

By Rupert Hewison Crowsnest Pass Thunder peewee hockey started this past weekend, with games on both Saturday and Sunday.

They have just started the tiering round for the 2017-18 season.

On Saturday, Crowsnest Pass played a tough game against Nanton but lost 9-4. Braden Anctil scored three goals, Luca Canderan had one goal and one assist, and Kenna Lewis had one assist.

On Sunday, the team lost another tough game to Picture Butte, 7-3. Avery Whelan scored two goals and had one assist. Braden Anctil scored one goal and had one assist.

Peewee Thunder have a small team this year but put forth a great effort in the first two games of the season.

Waterton Biosphere presents leopard frog workshop

By Andrea Morehouse Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association hosted a northern leopard frog workshop Sept. 26 at the Coalfields School near Beaver Mines.

The workshop was part of a project that aims to create awareness of the importance of northern leopard frogs in our ecosystem and to create opportunities for Waterton Biosphere Reserve residents to help improve the frogs’ status in the area.

The group has been soliciting local information about past and present leopard frog occurrences, and working to identify possible locations for habitat improvements or potential reintroductions. It has also worked with partners to share information and raise awareness about amphibian species and their wetland habitats in the biosphere reserve.

The workshop began with three speakers: Lea Randall from the Calgary Zoo, Brad Downey with Multisar and Kim Pearson with Waterton Lakes National Park.

Lea shared information on identification, habitats and distribution of northern leopard frogs, and their current status in the province.

Brad talked about habitat stewardship projects and ways that landowners can make water sources on their land more hospitable to amphibians. Kim spoke about Waterton’s leopard frog reintroduction efforts.

The group then travelled to Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, where Sarah Downey of Alberta Parks spoke about reintroduction efforts at the lake, and leopard frog habitat within the park. She showed the area in which leopard frogs had been reintroduced and where they breed each spring. Some members of the group were fortunate enough to see a leopard frog!

David Piepgrass 1938 – 2017 F. David Piepgrass was born April 2, 1938, and passed away Oct. 8, 2017.

He Is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son, Wayne (Betka); his two grandsons Chris (Brenda) and Tibor (Jessica); and six greatgrandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Kay Meldrum and Marilyn Still (Phil); one brother, Lyle; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Lyle and Iona; sister Jean Lybbert; daughter Shelly and Andy Jensen; and three grandchildren.

He retired from Nova after 35 years of service. He was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he loved the Lord and enjoyed many opportunities to serve.

A funeral service was held Oct. 14, 2017, at the LDS church in Pincher Creek. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial donations in David’s name may be made directly to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, 119 14th St. N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 1Z6.

The Pincher Creek chapter of Girl Guides, Brownies, Sparks and Pathfinders have commenced a new year with an initation and distribution of chocolatey mint cookies.

A new season, more thin mints

By Caitlin Clow Monday night the gymnasium at Canyon School was sizzling with energy as a community of friends — old and new — gathered to add their names to the roster of Pincher Creek’s chapter of Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides.

And, yes. There were cookies.

Silly songs were sung, dances were danced and new members received their pins during a fun and heart-

warming initiation ceremony led by Razzle and Dazzle — more commonly known as Tracy and Beverly Burton.

Each new Brownie, Spark and Girl Guide had to make a promise to uphold the code of conduct, which includes being a good friend and living with kindness, compassion and stewardship.

Shaylee Fitzpatrick, a Girl Guide who has been in the program for just about six years, said her favourite

part about Girl Guides is being able to spend time with her friends.

Currently, Shaylee is working on acquiring her endangered species badge, but she said she’s looking forward to selling more cookies.

Her sales tactic? Going doorto-door and selling to friends and neighbours.

It’s hard to say no when it’s thin mint season.

Shaylee is in it for the long haul,

but she said she’s not sure if she wants to become a leader after Pathfinders.

“I don’t think I have the patience for little children,” she said, sternly.

For those curious about the club, Shaylee said it’s worth looking into.

“In my opinion, Girl Guides is fun because we do different stuff and it extends what you can do and it’s a good learning experience,” she said.
