DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

As I write this letter, we are preparing for a warm day after what seemed like weeks of cooler temperatures and some rain showers. I am looking forward to warmer days and seeing spring flowers and trees come to life with new leaves and foliage.

I am again very excited to present the Spring and Summer Activity Guide. The Community Services Department team works hard to bring you great programs, services, and facilities all year long, however, the spring and summer are by far our busiest. Please enjoy browsing this guide and finding something for yourself, your family and your friends. I would like to take a moment to highlight a project update and some events you may be interested in:

Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center

The new Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center is currently under construction and we look forward to opening the facility later this spring/summer to the community. On page 51, staff have inserted detailed information about the project and the amenities that will be available once it is open. In addition, you can see some renderings of what the facility will look like when completed.

Live Music and Movies

We are excited to bring back Concerts on the Plaza that takes place in front of City Hall. This popular concert series offers a variety of music every Friday, June through September, which means we are providing 17 weeks of live music on the Plaza from 6 to 7:30 p.m. I want to recognize the staff that worked so hard to schedule all these bands for us. Find more information on page 75.

We also provide three dates where the Plaza welcomes a younger crowd for live music at Kid Stock. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to bring your family, especially the little ones, for a morning of fun music and dancing from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. More information is available on page 9.

Another popular summer series is the Outdoor Movie Series located at various parks across the City. Staff have scheduled six movie nights throughout the summer. Movies start once it is dark and more information is available on page 30. Join us under the stars to enjoy the movies and bring your own blankets or folding chairs.

Class Attendance and Registration

• You’re excited and we’re excited that you’re ready to jump into an activity. Before you do, though, make sure you’re already registered to participate. Registration does not happen in class, please make sure to register online.

Waitlist • Drats! You were this close to getting in! Your name will be placed on a waitlist if the class is full. At the program supervisors discretion, another class may be added to accommodate for participants on the waitlist. You will be given a 24-hour deadline to submit your Registration Form and payment. If your Registration Form and payment are not submitted by the given deadline, you will be removed from the waitlist and the next person on the list will be contacted.

Age/Birth Date

• To register, participants must be within the required minimum and maximum age by the first day of class. All participants 17 years of age or younger must provide their date of birth. Proof of age may be requested.

Transfer • Need to transfer from one activity to another? You may transfer to another activity as long as you meet the minimum age requirement, there is space available and you send your written request five (5) business days before the first day of class. So that means if class starts on Monday, you have the Monday before to transfer. Email your request to Recreation@MountainView.gov. You will be assessed a $10 processing fee per transaction.

Withdrawal

• If you need to withdraw from an activity and receive a refund, e-mail us at Recreation@MountainView.gov no less than five (5) business days before the first day of class. You may also submit a Withdrawal Request Form that you can download by visiting MountainView.gov/Register. Just so we’re on the same page, if your class starts on Monday, your last day to withdraw is the Monday before that class. You will be assessed a $10 processing fee per transaction.

Missed a day? • Unfortunately, no refund or make-up classes will be issued for any missed activity by the participant.

Once a class begins, can I still join or transfer? • Yes! We do not prorate any of the days that have already taken place, though. You just need to catch up with everyone else at the next class!

Behavior Violation

• Participants receiving three (3) behavior violations will be removed from the specific program.

Proof of Mountain View Residency

From time to time we may need to request proof of residency. Acceptable forms of proof include: Current California Driver’s License or Identification, a recent utility bill, car registration, bank statement or rental agreement on property management letterhead with a current address. Temporary DMV Change of Address cards, Post Office boxes, personal checks, letters or flyers are not acceptable. The proof of residence must match the name and address on the registration form.

Wait, what? You canceled my activity?!

Classes not meeting minimum registration levels will be canceled. Participants will be notified approximately three (3) business days before class begins and issued a full refund, or be eligible to transfer to another class if space is available. Participants transferring will be responsible for any additional fees.

Financial Assistance

Recreation Class Financial Assistance Program (FAP)

The City provides eligible, low-income Mountain View families limited financial assistance to register children for recreation classes. To qualify, applicants must be a Mountain View resident and qualify through the Community Services Agency (CSA) screening process (subject to Santa Clara County HUD guidelines). Upon eligibility, recipients will either receive a 90% Financial Assistance Waiver up to $500 per child (10% of the class price must be paid out of pocket) OR a 75% Financial Assistance Waiver up to $400 per child (25% of the class price must be paid out of pocket). FAP allocations do not cover any material fees. Material fees must be paid out of pocket. FAP is good for one year (September 1 through August 31) and does not apply to Adult Classes, Golf, Tennis, Rec Swim, Lap Swim, and Special Events.

Morning: In this game-focused robotics program, your engineer will explore the basics of robotics while playing some really awesome games! Your student will be taught how to effectively utilize sensors, how different mechanical components work in their robots, and how programming is a challenging but rewarding skill that they can master with just a little practice.

Afternoon: Students explore the world of their favorite superheroes and will learn about forces, energy and problem solving as they build models inspired by Superman, Batman, and all their favorite heroes.

Skateworks Skateboarding Camp

Ages 5 to 14

Skateworks Skateboarding Camp focuses on a wide range of skateboarding skills, starting with the basics of balancing, riding and safety. We work to develop each child’s confidence and skills along with vital technique and skatepark etiquette. Our camps are great for all genders and all levels of experience. Participants must bring helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes (no Crocs or sandals) and bring a water bottle. Skateworks staff can provided a skateboard for those who do not have their own.

Futsal Camp is back! Futsal is a fun, fast-paced 5v5 soccer game, played indoors within the lines of a basketball court, using a small, size 3 low-bounce ball. Rise and Shine! The Early Risers program is here to provide morning care for participants registered in camps and classes located at the Mountain View Community Center. Busy Bees Astro Kids

This half-day morning camp has been designed to meet the social, cognitive and recreational needs of the youngest members of our community. This camp fosters a healthy respect for the environment and community through a variety of activities which include art, storytelling, singing and group games. Do you have a budding scientist who is looking for an out-of-this-world summer camp experience? Well, get ready to take off because Astro Kids Summer Adventures has created a summer camp for our youngest explorers! Astro Kids has taken the traditional summer camp and added a spin of science to the mix, creating a curriculum that is both adventurous and educational. Children should come with a water bottle and small nut-free snack and wearing active running clothes, shoes and pre-applied sunscreen. Instructor: Recreation Staff. *No camp 7/4.

Club Rec Juniors is back for an awesome summer of fun! This traditional outdoor summer camp will provide a well-rounded camp experience designed around each participant’s skill level and interests. Each week features a new theme that includes a variety of both recreational and enrichment activities our creative recreation team has planned. In addition, participants will enjoy water play activities throughout the week. Children should come with a water bottle and wear active running clothes, shoes, and pre-applied sunscreen. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided. The week prior to camp, parents will receive an email including a parent letter, camp schedule and breakfast/lunch menu.

H2O Adventures brings a camp where youth can learn swimming techniques, enjoy recreational swimming, and play awesome, high-activity games and crafts. Along with our traditional outdoor camp activities and games, each participant will receive 30 minutes of swim instruction (provided by aquatics staff) in the afternoons followed by recreational swim. Participants should come to the camp prepared with their swimsuit and towel in a bag. One t-shirt will be provided to each participant for the summer session. Participants should come with a water bottle and wear active running clothes, shoes, and pre-applied sunscreen. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided. Morning: Discover the fascinating science of the human body with Little Medical School! Through hands on crafts, games and role playing, participants will learn STEM concepts in a fun and unique way! Each student will receive a working stethoscope and a variety of projects.

Afternoon: Children will learn to make important measurements on their very own stuffed puppy. Students will learn how much water their dogs need in a day. They will also learn how to remove ticks using proper techniques and the importance of vaccines, dog behavior and much more.

Skateworks Skateboarding Camp

Ages 5 to 14

Skateworks Skateboarding Camp focuses on a wide range of skateboarding skills, starting with the basics of balancing, riding and safety. We work to develop each child’s confidence and skills along with vital technique and skatepark etiquette. Our camps are great for all genders and all levels of experience. Participants must bring a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes (no Crocs or sandals) and bring a water bottle. Skateworks staff can provide a skateboard for those who do not have their own.

Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED (Blended)

Ages 15+

The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies, and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age - adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatrics (infants and children up to 12 years of age). Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. Lifeguard Training (Blended)

This course is designed to prepare students for Lifeguard employment eligibility. The recertification course is designed to re-certify lifeguards for another two years. The class will be a hybrid learning opportunity with in-person classes and online training. Online training must be completed prior to the in-person classes. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive the following certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid Training and Lifeguard Training certification. Participants must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes and retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool. Please bring a swimsuit and a towel to every class.

LAMVAC is a year-round amateur competitive swim team for swimmers age 5 and above, sanctioned by United States Swimming, Inc.

The range of competition is from local to Olympic and International levels. The team is coached by experienced staff certified by American Swimming Coaches Association.

Practice sessions are held at Eagle Park Pool or Rengstorff Park Pool for short course (25yard/meter pools) and at Foothill College for long course (50-meter Olympic size pool).

Mountain View Masters

Mountain View Masters (MVM) is a swim program providing year-round coached workouts, clinics, competitions and fun social events for adults. MVM is a member of United States Masters Swimming. We welcome swimmers of all abilities and with various training goals (fitness, triathlon, competitive, non-competitive) who are interested in improving their fitness through swimming.

Registration Tips

• Aligned with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, each child must be the required minimum/ maximum age on the first day of each session.

• For the first session, we recommend you enroll in the last swim level completed.

• Visit MountainView.gov/SwimLessons to review all swim levels in detail.

• Registering for the appropriate level is encouraged due to limited space and no transfer guarantee.

• The waitlist will be contacted first when spaces open.

• Registering for back-to-back sessions is not permitted and you will be asked to drop one of the classes.

Swim Lesson Guidelines

• Bring a copy of your receipt on the first day of class.

• During swim lessons, please direct questions regarding registration and swim lessons to onsite Pool Supervisor.

• If advancing to a higher swim level, transfers may be made if: (1) space is available in the class/session; and (2) participants last completed level is provided.

• If your child does not attend the first day of class without notifying staff, the waitlist may be contacted to fill the spot.

Aquatics Center Rengstorff Park

Opening Soon!

Construction on the Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center began in spring 2022 and will be opening soon. This facility is one of two aquatic facilities operated by the City of Mountain View and will become the home of year-round aquatics programs.

The new facility will feature an 8,200 square-foot building with a multi-purpose room, locker and shower facilities and staff office areas. The facility will include a 25-meter by 25-yard lap pool with a 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, as well as a recreation pool with zero-depth entry, water toys, a water slide and four-shallow 25-yard lap lanes. The project utilizes the latest in green building design features including an all-electric system with innovative solar panels that provide both photovoltaic (PV) as well as solar thermal energy to heat the nearly 500,000 gallons of pool water.

Our creative play-based preschool programs have been designed to meet the developmental needs of the “whole child.” The curriculum centers on the vital social opportunities children need in order to grow emotionally, cognitively and kinesthetically. Children are provided the opportunity to learn at their own pace with a curriculum that includes daily art and circle time activities, singing, dancing and storytelling.

Children must be the required age by September 3 of the school year in which they are registering. The following documents must be submitted at time of registration:

Robotics for Girl Scout Daisies

Girl Scouts are confident in the face of challenges, kind even when others aren’t, and problem solvers who see opportunity where others get stuck. Being a Girl Scout gives your kid the space to be their best self. In this class, Daisies will learn what robots do, how robots work, and how to design and program their very own simple robot. Teen Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Elevate your summer with the Teen Volunteer Summer Program, supporting the Recreation Division’s Summer Camp, Swim Lesson, and Deer Hollow Farm programs. Dive into a dynamic and enjoyable volunteer experience, blending advanced training with meaningful service opportunities. This free program requires an application and an interview.

How do I apply?

All prospective teen volunteers must complete an application. Applications open online at MountainView.gov/TeenSummerVolunteer on March 4, 2024. Applications are due on April 26, 2024. Interviews will take place in May. Applicants will receive information via email on how to sign up for an interview once their application has been submitted. Applicants will receive notice of their acceptance via email on May 17, 2024.

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Junior Leaders

Ages 14-17 years old by June 8

Junior Leaders will join the City of Mountain View summer camps to engage with youth, lead activities and games, and shadow staff.

- Interest in volunteering with youth

- Available for at least 1 week of service between June 10-August 9

- Volunteer shifts are 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. Monday-Friday

Junior Lifeguard

Ages 12-17 years old by June 8

Junior Lifeguards will assist Aquatics staff in swim lessons by making the pool a safe, fun, and friendly atmosphere.

- Interest in aquatics and volunteering with youth

- Available for at least 2 weeks of service between June 10-August 3

- Volunteer shift times vary and are available Monday-Saturday

Deer Hollow Farm Intern

Ages 14-17 years old by June 6

Deer Hollow Farm Interns will assist staff during Deer Hollow Farm Wilderness Camps with various outdoor and farm activities.

- Interest in the outdoors and volunteering with youth

- Available for at least 3 weeks of service between June 10-July 26

- Volunteer shifts are 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday

- Transportation to and from Deer Hollow Farm is provided from the Community Center

Can I apply for multiple opportunities?

Absolutely! We encourage you to explore all of your interests. Feel free to apply for multiple opportunities within our Teen Volunteer Summer Program. Remember, each program has its own online application.

Is there any interviews and training?

Yes! Attendance to an interview and training are mandatory and vital to your success in the program. If you are participating in multiple opportunities (i.e. Junior Leaders and Deer Hollow Farm Interns), you must attend all required trainings. If training overlaps, staff will schedule a different time to meet with you. Training dates for each program will be listed on the applications.

Where can I get more information on the program?

The City will host an information night on Monday, March 4, 2024, from 6:30-7 p.m. at The View Teen Center. Interested teens and their guardians can speak with staff about the programs’ application processes, requirements, and experiences.

Youth Advisory Committee

Seeking current 6th - 11th grade Mountain View residents who want to make an impact for the 20242025 Youth Advisory Committee. The Committee acts in an advisory capacity providing City Council and staff with valuable insight regarding youth and teen issues in our community. Meetings take place two Mondays a month to plan programs and events, recommend new facilities and services, and discuss issues that matter to youth and teens in Mountain View. The City will host an information night on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. at The View Teen Center.

This partner class is a group class designed to develop leading and following skills - where the leader takes the follower through a series of spins and turn patterns to music. In the beginner class, you will learn how to connect, move effectively with your partner, and how to build your own dance combination and dance anywhere. In the intermediate class, you will learn how to create your own dance combinations you can take anywhere. We will also explore styling skills and techniques such as body actions, arms and hip styling. Learn the basics of rock-style drumming in a fun and encouraging group environment! Forget waves. Have fun surfing a lake and get toned in no time! Providing basic techniques in safe and calm conditions to help you get out and explore the water. Learn to harness the calm morning breeze in protected water. This Shoreline Lake Sailing Class helps you learn the basics (tacking, jibing, docking, water safety and terminology) needed to get out on the water safely. Introductory Windsurfing

Ages 14+

Learn to windsurf in a weekend with our certified instructing staff. Students will be up and sailing in a matter of hours regardless of age, strength, and size. Tacking (turning), rigging, nomenclature, self-rescue, water safety, and a myriad of other topics will be covered. Includes a 1-hour private lesson which can be scheduled at your convenience within 2 weeks after completing the course.

Engaged Learning at a tennis park near you.

Mountain View Tennis offers a racquet sports fitness program at public parks that is unique in

the Bay Area. Since 2009, we’ve taken a holistic approach to public tennis instruction that balances the health and wellness of the individual with public accessibility to professional coaching and open access to courts for local residents.

Our Engaged Learning Approach, with low student-to-coach ratios, means you’ll learn rapidly in the context of an aerobic, one-to-one rally with a partner, as opposed to traditional “stand and wait” drills. In addition, we offer flexible class sessions that combine the benefits of a planned skills progression with the flexibility to adjust your class times each week.

The Mountain View Senior Center is an all-purpose facility that offers programs and services for adults 55 years of age and over.

Food Programs | The Senior Center hosts food distribution programs for Seniors. Program information is as follows:

• Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) – Dine-in lunch takes place Monday through Friday. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and lunch is served at 11:45 a.m.

• Second Harvest – Free Grocery Program operates from 8:30 – 10 a.m., on the first through fourth Tuesday of each month. Registration Required.

Senior Advisory Committee | The Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) meets at the Mountain View Senior Center at 2 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month (with the exception of August and December when there are no meetings).

Spring and Summer Ramblings Shoreline at Mountain View

Shoreline at Mountain View is an expansive, 750-acre wildlife and recreation area located over a closed landfill along the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Especially with the days being longer during this part of the year, we welcome you, your family and friends to fully experience the area for its outdoor enjoyment: trails and recreation, historic resources, rental programs and opportunities for special events.

Outdoor Enjoyment

Current Shoreline amenities include a kite flying area, dog park, sailing lake and 18-hole golf course. If you’d like dinner and a concert, you can also eat at Shoreline Lake American Bistro & Café or Michaels at Shoreline and then visit Shoreline Amphitheatre. History & Rental Opportunities

Rengstorff House, built circa 1867, is a community space enjoyed every year by thousands of visitors, rental clients and their guests, as well as a place of respite for those enjoying the surrounding garden space. Open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1–4 p.m. to the general public, as well as select Saturdays (based on volunteer availability), the house tells the tale of early Mountain View and our community of immigrants during the Gold Rush era.

During non-rental times, you may also enjoy the exterior grounds with your friends and family. Wildlife & Trails

Shoreline is home to more than 30 protected species, including a species of special concern, the Burrowing Owl. To avoid negatively impacting habitat and wildlife, we kindly ask that you stay on the trails, pathways, and within designated recreation areas. For your safety, as well as the safety of others, maintain a speed limit of 15 mph on Class 1 trails at all times. For more trail etiquette on Permanente Creek Trail, Stevens Creek Trail and San Francisco Bay Trail, visit the City’s website.

Asistencia a Clase y Registro • Usted está emocionado y nosotros estamos contentos de que esté listo para comenzar una clase. Antes de hacerlo, sin embargo, asegúrese de que usted ya esté registrado para participar. El registro para una clase no se lleva a cabo en la clase, sucede ya sea en línea o en persona.

Lista de Espera • Ahh! Usted estuvo muy cerca de estar en la clase! Su nombre será puesto en una lista de espera si su primera opción y segunda alternativa están llenas. Una vez que haya un lugar disponible, revisaremos la lista de espera en el orden en que los usuarios fueron añadidos a dicha lista; si usted es el próximo, le llamaremos. Edad/Fecha de Nacimiento • Para inscribirse, los participantes deben estar dentro de la edades requeridas (mínima y máxima) en el primer día de clase. Todos los participantes de 17 años de edad o menos deben proporcionar su fecha de nacimiento. Prueba de edad se puede solicitar.

Transferencia • ¿Tiene necesidad de transferirse de una clase a otra? Clases que no cumplan los niveles mínimos de registro se cancelarán. Los participantes que sean transferidos serán responsables de cualquier cargo adicional.
