Who would have thought a teenager’s mobile phone could help them manage their mental health and provide vital life skills?
The A-Maze-In Mind App used by Foster Care Angels is an online emotional health and life skills education program that is empowering young people aged 13 to 24. Thanks to a grant from Harbord Diggers the Foster Care Angels have been able to provide 200 locals with access to this early intervention program.
The training app provides essential life skills to users such as mental health awareness, stress management skills, anger management tools, increasing self-knowledge and creating emotional literacy.
The program is delivered via the app that contains e-magazines and regular updates of additional tools and strategies that empower young people to manage life stresses which is particularly important after two years of COVID-19 restrictions.
The app is further supported with monthly online workshops that reinforce the messages, tools and strategies discussed and demonstrated in the app.
Foster Care Angels mission is to support, empower and create opportunities for vulnerable young people and was delighted to launch this initiative on the Northern Beaches thanks to the $9,500 ClubGRANTS provided last year.
Wendy Bennett is a mum and highly experienced counsellor, specialising in working with young people and knew that an app was the way to engage young people. As the creator of the program and part of the Foster Care Angels team, she was delighted to see it rolled out to local teenagers on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
“This program aligns with Foster Care Angels’ mission by providing a wealth of resources to support young people’s emotional health and wellbeing, empowering them with a toolkit of skills and resources to build resilience, enhance
life skills and enable them to better manage their mental health, creating opportunities they may not have otherwise been able to access,” explained Wendy.
“One of the problems challenges with teens is that they don’t want to learn from their parents. Peers, social media, the internet and to a lesser degree school become the places they go for information and the answers to any questions they may have. The problem of course being that they may not always be accessing accurate or reliable information,” she continued.
The app is a professionally created resource for teens to access when they have questions they don’t feel comfortable asking parents, friends or other people.
“It is a safe place to find reliable information, tools, strategies and resources
to help them develop ‘soft-skills’ that are highly valued in order to successfully transition to high school, vocational and employment training,” added Wendy.
The 2022 ClubGRANTS funding to Foster Care Angels has enabled up to 200 local young people to access the A-Maze-In-Mind program.
“We are so grateful to receive financial support from Mounties Group. Thanks to this funding we have been able to expand our resource to support young people for the first time within the Northern Beaches local government area and we’ve seen great results so far,” concluded Wendy.
Last year, Mounties Group’s ClubGRANTS funding saw more than $1.2 million given back to the local community via 75 projects across Sydney, the Northern Beaches and Central Coast.
CELEBRATING PRIDE
AT HARBORD DIGGERS
WorldPride Sydney 2023 was an extraordinary event that united the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies from around the world to honour diversity, promote equality, and raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by the rainbow community. Running from February 17 to March 5, the festivities included a wide range of activities, such as parades, concerts, parties, conferences, and cultural events throughout Sydney.
Notably, the annual Mardi Gras parade attracted more than 500,000 people, making it the largest pride parade in Australian history and featuring the participation of over 200 organisations.
Harbord Diggers was a proud supporter of WorldPride and received a grant from the Northern Beaches Council to positively contribute to the broader WorldPride festivities by supporting inclusivity and diversity for the rainbow community through an activation.
The iconic Ocean Terrace at Harbord Diggers was chosen as the setting for a lighting display created in collaboration with Sydney’s Guinness World Record-holding lighting designer, Martin Bevz. The lighting display was a magnificent and all-encompassing tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community, with six columns on the ocean terrace illuminated in each of the Pride flag’s colours. Accompanying signage explained the
meaning of each colour featured in the flag. The main feature of the display was a rainbow-like wave proudly showcasing the pride flag colours.
The lighting display was not only visually stunning but also conveyed a powerful message to the LGBTQIA+ communitya symbol of the warm and inclusive environment that Diggers provides to all who enter.
Other activities ‘Celebrating Pride’’ included Drag Bingo, hosted by Sydney’s best-known Drag personality Felicity Frockacinno, and proudly supported by Squealing Pig Wines, and a Glitter Party to celebrate the last few days of the event.
Harbord Diggers takes pride in standing with and supporting the rainbow community. All members of the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome at Harbord Diggers, and we celebrate their diversity and individuality always.

WARM UP TO WINTER SWIMMING
Where would you rather be - standing in drizzle, wind chilling you to the bone at a sports field or indoor coffee in hand, in a comfy viewing room while your child learns to swim?
It’s an easy answer. Don’t get us wrong team sports are fun and great for kids but learning to swim is not a seasonal sport. Swimming is first and foremost a lifesaving skill.
The tragic increase in drownings is a symptom of more than ten million missed lessons during the Covid lockdowns. Now is not the time to stop swimming. Here are some benefits of swimming through winter:
• Swimming in a purpose-built indoor pool is never “rained out”
• Continuing to swim will help your child improve more quickly
• Children who take a three month break often forget their skills, re-starting can be difficult and frustrating
• Swimming helps build stronger immune systems
• Swimming builds confidence and self-esteem
• Have your child ready for an enjoyable school carnival
• Given the demand and long wait lists, should you take a break, Carlile Swimming will not be able to guarantee you a spot that suits your schedule when you want to return.
So, the answer is, just keep swimming. Still in doubt consider this - Swimming makes you smarter and happier.
Memory function, thinking skills and your mood is improved by exercise and swimming is an exercise for life. It doesn’t stress your joints, plus it burns more calories than jogging. As for making you smarter Griffith University research found children who attended regular swimming lessons are way ahead. Compared to the non-swimming population, the 3 to 5 years old’s in the study were:
• 11 months ahead in verbal skills
• 6 months ahead in math skills
• 2 months ahead in literacy skills
• 17 months ahead in story recall
• 20 months ahead in understanding directions

ISN’T CRYOTHERAPY SIMILAR TO AN ICE BATH? Not really
Looking for a way to rehabilitate and recover from injuries, reduce pain, and reduce inflammation? Then you’ve probably heard of icing, ice baths and now cryotherapy. Cryotherapy has become increasingly popular recently, with celebrities and professional athletes endorsing the practice, but what is the difference & why?
Temperature & time efficiency
During an ice bath, soft tissue and muscle deep in the body can begin to freeze and lose their capacity after 20 minutes.
Cryotherapy, however, is different. It uses dry cryogenically cooled air to reduce the skin’s temperature, but it doesn’t freeze muscle tissue – instead it activates the body’s nervous system with exposure to sub-zero temperatures. While an ice bath may take 30 minutes or more to achieve desired effects, Cryotherapy is more effective and safer in just 3 minutes.
After a cryotherapy session, you can return to activity the same day with more energy and ability than before the treatment. Cryotherapy temperatures reach down as low as -140°C, while an ice bath doesn’t usually get below 5°C.
Physiological Effects
When submerged in an ice bath, the body must expend a lot of energy to try and return the blood in the body’s core to a normal temperature. This can lead to muscle congealing and freezing, and in extreme cases, hypothermia or worse.
During cryotherapy, the body’s thermo-receptors sense the cold
environment, and the brain sends a signal to the body to constrict blood vessels, taking the oxygen and nutrients to the vital organs in the core of the body. After the 3-minute session, the brain sends a message to return the highly oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood back to the peripheral systems, instantly reaching normal core temperature and allowing the body function at optimal levels.
The Impact on Skin
During an ice bath, oxygen supply to the skin’s surface is halted, which can lead to skin damage and even skin disease if the procedure is repeated. Cryotherapy, on the other hand accelerates collagen production during treatment with rapid blood flow circulation and improving skin health.
Making an Informed Decision
If you’re looking for an effective way to reduce pain and inflammation, then both ice baths and cryotherapy have benefits. However, cryotherapy is now becoming a popular option for many with its shorter treatment time with positive physiological & mental effects.
If you’re looking for a safe and effective way to reduce pain and inflammation, then give cryotherapy a try. °CRYO Northern Beaches is located right here in the Health & Wellbeing precent of the Harbord Diggers with state-of-the-art TGA approved equipment, licensed therapists and an allied health practitioner onsite.
