Mount Saint Mary College
A BRIEF HISTORY
M
ount Saint Mary College is an independent, coeducational liberal arts college founded by the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1959. The College is heir to a Catholic tradition of study in the pursuit
of truth created by Saint Dominic de Guzman in the 13th century. The College’s roots in Newburgh, New York, can be traced to 1883 and the establishment of Mount Saint Mary Academy to serve the children of the surrounding community. In 1930, the Sisters established Mount Saint Mary Normal and Training School, chartered by New York State as an institute to provide teacher training for the Dominican Sisters in education.
12
OF THE SCHOOL Today, 2,500 full- and part-time students attend the Mount’s day, evening, and accelerated sessions on the 60-acre main campus in the City of Newburgh. Courses are also offered at extension sites at the United States Military Academy at West Point and Stewart Air National Guard Base. Mount Saint Mary College graduates excel in education, nursing and other health and human services, and hold leadership positions in businesses, government, and nonprofit agencies throughout the United States. The College’s 15,000+ alumni reside in 48 states and some foreign countries, with approximately half living and working in New York’s Hudson Valley region, contributing to the economic vitality and quality of life in this area.
