A letter from the President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, I am pleased to acknowledge the many generous donors to Mount Saint Mary College during the 2009-10 fiscal year. The Honor Roll of Donors is a testament to the commitment and dedication of alumni, parents (of students and alumni), members of our campus community, friends and business owners, to the mission and future of Mount Saint Mary College. I am inspired by the many individuals who have stepped up to support Mount students. The Annual Fund, in many ways the College’s “bread and butter fund,” increased by more than 30% in 2009-2010. Unrestricted Annual Fund gifts have helped to offset expenses not covered by tuition, sustaining the high quality of a Mount education. Because of the generosity of our donors, Mount Saint Mary College is stronger and better able to meet the needs of students today. As we move forward with exciting plans, we will be calling upon alumni and friends in new ways. I hope you will be involved and take part in some of the events. A Year of Progress

reat things happen at Mount Saint Mary College because of great people. A dedicated faculty and staff, enthusiastic students, loyal alumni, and generous donors all have a part in the ongoing progress at the Mount. As the Mount celebrated its 50th Anniversary this past year, we made great strides in a number of areas. There were also a number of firsts for the Mount. Listed here are some, but certainly not all, of the highlights of the past year. The Mount brought in ten new faculty members this year and hired five more full-time faculty and a chair for the Division of Business for the fall of 2010. A 5-year business plan was created for distance education and blended online programs. Priority registration for students in the college-wide honors program began in the spring of 2010. Development (CARD) was established and held its first annual conference on “Adolescence in the 21st Century.” The Catholic and Dominican Institute was established and presented its first lecture. The Mount’s Athletic Department launched “Knights In The Community,” bringing students and coaches into regular service in the greater Newburgh area. The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams completed their first season. A new all-weather turf field was completed in front of Hudson Hall. Solar panels were installed on the roof of one of the dorms. The Dining Hall received an extraordinary renovation thanks to Sodexo, Inc. Dr. Richard Heinzl, founder of Doctors Without Borders-Canada, spoke at this year’s Affron Lecture Series. In addition, the Mount enjoyed great fund-

raising success this year. The MSMC Annual Fund raised a record amount of unrestricted funds with an increase of nearly 30% over the previous year. The 32nd Annual Invitational Golf Tournament also raised a record amount of funds for the College. Student athletes had a tremendous year fundraising for athletic programs at the Mount. All this was quite remarkable considering the economic climate! The Advancement Office, and all those at the College, thank our donors for their loyal and generous support and for delivering this extraordinary fundraising success. We also thank our volunteers for their hard work, time, and energy in support of the Mount and our students. All of us can take pride in these accomplishments and look forward to the future of Mount Saint Mary College with great promise.

hen speaking of their charitable giving, Ruth ’89 and John Smith, Sr. readily share their positive outlook. “Because we have been blessed, we feel it is important to give back,” said Ruth. John added, “It’s a good feeling. It’s satisfying to give back and help others.” Giving both personally and as a corporate donor through their familyowned business, William A. Smith and Son, Inc., in Newburgh, the Smiths appreciate the important resources the Mount provides to its students and to the greater Newburgh community. “Supporting the community is important to our family as well as to our business. We want to help Mount Saint Mary College meet the needs of those who benefit from its programs and resources,” said John, who is a current Board member and alumnus of the New York Military Academy, as well as a Foundation Trustee and former Hospital Trustee of St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital. Ruth knows the academic excellence provided by the Mount firsthand, as she began her quest to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology while raising their son and two daughters. Being a bit apprehensive about returning to school in her early 40’s, Ruth’s fears were soon quelled by a supportive faculty who encouraged her to pursue her goal. “I always appreciated the family feeling at the Mount,” said Ruth. “With the guidance of Sr. Jean Rosaire Bedotto, I started with just one course and then took more over time. The College’s faculty gave me the confidence in myself to continue my studies even during some challenging times. It took me seven years to complete my degree, but I did it. I am always proud to tell people that I am a Mount Saint Mary College alumna.” Ruth continues her relationship with the Mount today through

her volunteer activities on campus and in the community through her work with the Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center. Singing in the chapel of the Dominican Sisters’ Mother House for Christmas Vespers in the early 1980s is a particularly fond memory that Ruth and John share. John, donning a formal tuxedo, and Ruth, wearing a crisp white blouse and long black skirt, performed with a group of faculty members, students, and community members under the direction of the late Dr. Louis Fletcher. “I was a soprano, eventually becoming a contralto, and John sang bass. Together with the others, we had over twenty voices singing in concert. Performing as part of Vespers was a favorite holiday activity for John and me, and we continue to enjoy the music and readings today as members of the audience,” said Ruth. Ruth and John recently enhanced their partnership with the Mount by naming Mount Saint Mary College as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. In so doing, the Smiths became members of the Legacy Society recognizing those who have included the Mount in their will or estate plans. “We think it’s important to plan, to know where your money will go, and how it will do the most good,” said John. An announcement welcoming Ruth and John into the Legacy Society was made by Joe Valenti, Vice President for College Advancement, during a recent tribute to the late Bernice J. (Bunny) Hornibrook. Mrs. Hornibrook was a good friend of the Smiths who left a significant bequest to the College to establish named endowed funds for the Library and scholarships. “Like Bunny, we hope our commitment will not only serve the Mount well when the time comes, but also help to inspire others to include the College in their financial and estate planning,” said John.

An outstanding Mount alumna

ynne graduated from Mount Saint Mary College in 1977 with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Over the years, she has lent her time and talents in many ways to Mount Saint Mary College. Lynne has also been a dedicated and generous donor to Mount Saint Mary College, giving loyally to the MSMC Annual Fund since she became a Mount alumna. Since 1992, she has been a member of the Alumni Board of Directors and served as both vice president and president. Lynne has represented the Alumni Association at many College functions and served as the alumni representative on the College’s presidential search committee in 2008. She has also participated in the annual Meet a Mentor Dinner where Mount juniors and seniors meet with alumni over dinner to discuss career choices. Mount alumni talk with students about their own careers, explain how they got started, offer advice, and answer any questions students may have. Lynne has been employed by the Orange County Health Department since 1978 and has served as the Director of Patient services since 2008. She has given her time to make numerous presentations to Mount nursing students on such topics as public health issues, home health care and other health-related issues. She also arranges the schedule at the Orange County Health Department for Mount nursing students completing their community health rotations. When asked, “How has your degree from the Mount made a difference in your life”? Lynne replied, “From the moment I started at the Mount as a student, I had the feeling of being at home. The College community was very close knit. I believe all the instructors made each student feel that they were important and had great potential. That feeling still exists today. The positive influence the College instilled in me while pursuing my nursing degree has stayed with me all these years and has carried over into my work. It has enabled me to stay focused and grounded as well as develop close relationships with my co-workers.”

Mount Saint Mary CoLLEGE Living Legacy Society

Remembering friends who have remembered the Mount

f all the distinguishing traits that define the human spirit, none is so noble as the desire to create a legacy that will continue to positively influence a world that we may never see and serve those that we may never know. This admirable trait is clearly present among the alumni, parents and friends of the Mount, who, through their foresight and generosity, have become members of the Mount Saint Mary College Living Legacy Society. Each member of the Living Legacy Society chooses to play a role in the lives of future generations of Mount Saint Mary College students through the creation of a planned gift that may take the form of a bequest in their will, an insurance policy, creation of a charitable remainder trust or a pooled income fund. Mount Saint Mary College may not receive the actual gift for many years to come. However, by making their intentions known to us, these generous individuals have given us an opportunity to acknowledge their dedication now and to help us make certain that their gifts will be used in accordance with their wishes. Much like the Dominican Sisters who founded Mount Saint Mary College over fifty years ago, knowing that they themselves might never see the College grow to be the prominent institution that it has become, the members of the Living Legacy Society place their faith in the value of the Mount’s mission and traditions. They believe that the values that are at the root of the Mount’s educational experience will help to create future generations of students and alumni who will build on the legacy that has been left to them. We realize that a planned gift from one’s estate is perhaps the most personal type of contribution that one can make. Because of this we seek to help our generous friends to make informed decisions that will best suit their individual situations and their concerns for family and loved ones.
