Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence
In its application to the Fulbright Foundation, Mount Saint Mary College and its division of Education sought an international scholar for a Spring 2011 residency from outside North America, one with a broad understanding of multi-cultural communications across national divides and of the educational applications of such knowledge. The Fulbright Foundation found just such a scholar in Dr. Olga Lomakina, who brings to the Mount just the right combination of expertise in methodology curriculum and in methods of effective foreign language teaching. Olga has been at Mount Saint Mary College for more than two months now and has settled into her role as scholar-in residence. In her native Russia, Dr. Lomakina is full professor of Education at Volzhsky Institute for the Humanities, a sub-unit of Volgograd State University. Since 2003 she has served as Chair of the Foreign Language Department and, since 2006, as Chairperson of The Center for International Communication. Dr. Lomakina’s career has been meteoric. Following the Russian practice for advanced professionals, who are then recognized as full professors, Olga quickly advanced to complete her second doctorate, after finishing her dissertation on “Methodology in Communicative Competence.” She achieved this accomplishment at the age of 27. Olga is an educational virtuoso. According to the University’s rating system in Research and International spheres, out of 200 professors and teachers, Professor Lomakina received the first position, a recognition which indicates her active and hard working nature. Of late, Olga has established collaborative international programs for her university: with the ERASMUS University of Brussels in Belgium, with the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry; with the University of East London, where she organized professor/teacher exchanges and with the Psychological Center of Character Development in Dallas, Texas, which has since developed a branch center at Volgograd State University. For all her academic pursuits, Olga makes time for other interests. She enjoys traveling and visiting botanical gardens and zoos in each country she visits. She enjoys the seaside and each summer she spends a week at the Black Sea coast in Russia. Her favorite movie genre is comedy and her favorite American actor is Jim Carrey. Her family and, we understand, her 12 year old Persian cat are anxiously awaiting her return.
Aquinas & Ralph Scholars To foster scholarly pursuits and recognize academic achievement, the faculty selects juniors and seniors as Aquinas Scholars, and sophomores as Ralph Scholars. Aquinas Scholars must have a 3.6 Grade Point Average: only 5% of a division within a class, or three students per division per class, whichever is larger, may be chosen. The award is named for St. Thomas Aquinas, Dominican scholar. Ralph Scholars must have a 3.4 GPA: only 5% of the class may be chosen. The award is named for Sr. Mary Vincent Ralph, O.P., co-founder of the college and its first academic dean.
