MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A letter from the President

Dear alumni, students, parents and friends of Mount Saint Mary College,

The Mount fosters an environment of excellence inspired by Catholic and Dominican traditions and values; preparing students for leadership and service. On our beautiful campus, nearly 2,700 students pursue quality liberal arts learning for practical fields including health professions, education, business management, social sciences and communications. We provide state-of-the-art science and computer labs, electronically enhanced classrooms and a television studio. Mount Saint Mary College also offers 15 sports teams for student athletes. Our facilities are ever improving. And they must, to prepare our students for careers today. Nursing, for example, has changed much in the past 50 years. Likewise, technology and new research methods have extended into education and business. A physician uses equipment in ways that seek to heal a person. A teacher uses multimedia to tap into the multiple intelligences of young minds. Mount Saint Mary College has always been about people. As we begin our 50th anniversary celebration with Sr. Pat’s academic address, and Alumni Weekend (that “50” on the cover was a bonding experience), you’ll find in this magazine lists of people’s names, via our college advancement office, with thanks for all that you do for today’s students. Stay tuned for more, and keep in touch.

TEACHING reminisced about the days when there was one phone in each dorm: a pay phone in the hall. All incoming and outgoing calls came through that one phone.

Teaching the truth

The cell phone was invented by Martin Cooper in 1973; it was the size of a brick and cost $3,500. For obvious reasons, it didn’t sell very well. Today over half the world’s population subscribes to mobile phone service.

There will be very challenging issues in this technological society. We are already confronted with Sr. Patricia Sullivan entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Rosary, some of them: genetic Order of St. Dominic, in 1959. As one of Mount Saint Mary College’s first students, she graduated in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. The translation is “Teach me truth.” When I was a student here, I took that motto seriously. I was like a sponge soaking up all the wisdom the founding faculty could impart. I loved learning for the sake of learning. In those days, there wasn’t a lot of talk about being marketable. When I was thinking about what to say to you, I thought about that quote again. From the other side of the desk, it is an awesome responsibility. Students walk through these doors expecting my colleagues and me to teach them truth. The truth is, we cannot teach you all the truth. We can, however, teach you to seek the truth, and share our own truthseeking journeys with you. Truth-seeking in this age of technology is quite different from what it was in 4

sixth. Warren Bennis, a well known professor of business, said “The factory of the future will have two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.”

Technology has impacted and will continue to impact your life at home, and at work and in entertainment, commerce, government, international relations, and personal relations.

This technological world is the world which you are preparing to enter.

I had lunch with some alumni from the class of ‘78 and ‘79 this summer. They

There is nothing wrong with becoming marketable. In fact, it is a good, but it is just not enough. To advance in your careers will require creativity, personal skills, wisdom and a deep understanding of humanity.

The skills you need for success in your careers in this changing world are constants that haven’t changed. What you need are the same sources and methods of inquiry that prompted Plato, Descartes, Galileo, Shakespeare, Picasso, St. Thomas, Martin Luther King and Mandela to lead and inform in their times and places. These constants will inform the human task of managing change, of exercising judgment and applying ethical reasoning and intuition to how interventions and advances are used or abused. Take the Internet. It has many benefits – personal choice and empowerment, unlimited information at the speed of light, breaking boundaries of every kind. But at the same time, the Internet also threatens to fragment society, isolate communities, depersonalize relationships, erode privacy and sacrifice reflection to an addiction to speed. Choices about the Internet, as well as other advances, will impact society. With every choice there is a consequence. If we are to make wise choices, not only about what we want technology to do, but about how we want it to impact the society we live in, we will have to be involved in the human task of exercising judgment and applying ethical reasoning and intuition to its use and abuse. The things that inform this thinking haven’t changed over time. These constants include critical thinking; the ability to reason ethically and objectively as well as passionately; the capacity to explore, investigate, apply and communicate knowledge; and the urge to learn, to care and to understand. These are the elements of learning that have driven us through the ages, and that will continue to impel us individually, collectively and successfully through the future. They help us to understand and make sense of change. They have been tested through centuries of human history, philosophy and economy; they are the things that will continue to be most important in the years to come.

These are the tools of truth-seeking. These are the skills my colleagues and I will help you to begin to develop over the next four years. No program of study can provide you with the mastery of all the knowledge that currently relates to your discipline,

let alone the practical skills required to maintain currency in almost any work place … What we can do is pass on testing of ideas, the application of knowledge, the importance of learning and knowing how to learn, and the willingness to accept the responsibility of caring.

IN THE NEWS

Record freshman class Mount Saint Mary College welcomed 480 first year college students, and a record number of transfers, 175. The Class of 2013 attended orientation on academic programs, campus activities, health and wellness, safety and counseling, as well as having the opportunity to register for classes, socialize and exchange phone numbers. Melanie LoCascio from Long Island had already visited campus five times and for several months was connecting with new classmates. “I’m picky,” said LoCascio when asked why she chose the Mount. She’s studying nursing.

Mount, Rockland sign agreement Mount Saint Mary College president Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, has signed an articulation agreement with Rockland Community College to make it easier for RCC students to transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree in four years. The agreement creates a smooth transition of courses and credits, meticulously evaluated by the Mount’s Dr. Jerome Wyant. RCC president Cliff L. Wood, Ph.D., signed the agreement along with the colleges’ vice presidents for academic affairs, Iris J. Turkenkopf, Ph.D., for the Mount and Bill Baker for RCC. The Mount also has articulation agreements with community colleges in Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster counties, as well as developing agreements with graduate schools.

A new life During its 50th anniversary year, Mount Saint Mary College is hosting many free events. A highlight in September: James F. Cotter, Ph.D., professor of English with 45 years of service at the Mount, presented readings from his book, “A New Life: Learning the Way of Omega” in which he shares poetry, prose and reflections on seeing, listening, reading, loving and being. Her owners thought it was cute to have a 26 pound cat, until she became unable to care for herself. Because of her dangerous obesity, Alice had difficulty breathing, moving, and grooming herself. The Rhode Island SPCA sprang into action. Amy (Dziezynski) Karls ‘95, a veterinarian at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., joined the cause. “Alice’s weight was keeping her from having a normal quality of life,” Karls explained. “We decided to restrict her daily caloric intake and feed her a food appropriate for weight loss Hill’s Prescription Diet m/d.” Alice’s story has a happy ending. She’s now a healthy 14 pounds. “Proper nutrition is a vital part of pet care,” emphasizes Karls. “It is one area where we have a lot of influence. Feeding the correct food, the correct amount, the correct calories, can actually help animals live a longer, healthier life.” Karls was a kennel assistant while in high school, and worked her way up to veterinary assistant while in college. The future veterinarian chose Mount Saint Mary College, which offers prerequisite courses for various medical tracks, plus, as Karls puts it, “Compared to other schools, there was a much stronger sense of community, with smaller class sizes.” “I remember Dr. Turkenkopf in particular being such a great mentor,” she recalls. “She was very encouraging, a role model, showing that as a woman in the sciences, we can set goals and achieve them.” 8

Professors and mentors helped Karls on her way to a difficult career. Veterinary school – she earned her doctorate at Tufts–exposes students to many types of animals, with most students narrowing down their species of choice as school progresses. Also, unlike human practitioners, the veterinarian is often the internist, dentist, anesthesiologist, surgeon, etc. Karls worked for two years in general small animal practice, four years in a feline-exclusive practice, and cur- As a perfectionist involved in medicine, “you want to get to rently focuses on companion animal the correct diagnosis, the correct treatment,” says Amy Karls (pictured with pre-Hills diet patient Alice). nutrition. “Many people refer to the similarity of veterinarians to “Over the past 15 years or so,” observes Karls, pediatricians,” she notes, “because pets can’t tell us what’s wrong. The face of veterinary medicine has changed, as people can seek care for their pets as they do for themselves.

“I was given an opportunity to meet people working in an area I found very interesting,” said Dauer about the internship the Mount arranged.

For example, it used to be contraindicated to do radioactive sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer in pregnant patients, even though that type of surgery is state of the art.

Going on to receive an MS in health physics and a PhD in adult education, he recently received the Elda E. Anderson Award in recognition of excellence in his profession.

“Through careful study,” Dauer explains, “we’ve been able to remove that contraindication and it can now be done safely: which impacts around 3,000 pregnant cancer patients in the U.S. per year. That’s really satisfying, because we’ve been able to directly rely on scientific results.”

Revisiting the Mount A

fter leafing through their “dog-eared yearbooks,” as one alumna put it, graduates from dozens of Mount Saint Mary College class years converged on campus for Alumni Weekend, September 25-27. It was a joyful time with friends and faculty, classmates’ spouses and children, and beautiful Hudson Valley vistas.

Then, it was up the hill to Guzman lawn for a tasty BBQ, punctuated by a unique bonding experience: alumni, faculty, students and friends formed a big “50” to mark the first half-century of their college.

The weekend began Friday evening with ghost stories from Sr. Catherine Walsh, OP and a wine tasting welcome reception.

That photo and many more convey the camaraderie of Alumni Weekend 2009. “I’ve enjoyed the reminiscences of so many alumni,” said Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, college president. “Above all, the Mount is about great people, and where they’ve brought what they’ve learned.”

Saturday morning, Sr. Peggy Murphy, OP led a Dominican Heritage walk, including visits to Founders Chapel in Guzman Hall and the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary in the Dominican Center. A group of alumni paid their respects at the cemetery, remembering Sisters who loom large in their memories. 12

COVER STORY

2009 Alumni Awards Recipients The Mount Saint Mary College Alumni Association presented the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Alumni President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the College during Alumni Weekend. The President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the College was established in 1983. The alumna/us demonstrates outstanding service to the Mount through alumni work and benefactions for the support of the College. All alumni are eligible for this award.

In the professional arena, Matt is vice president for prime time sales at CBS Television. When asked how his degree from the Mount has made a difference in his life, Matt replied, “It’s not the degree per se that’s made the difference, but rather the entire Mount experience. The teachers, the administration and most of all the friendships I’ve made, have had a tremendous impact on my life. I did, after all, meet my wife there, Mary Hill-

Sautner, ’90. While it’s hard to say how my life would have turned out had I gone to a different school, I’ve been very fortunate to have had such a positive experience here. The Mount took me in and made me one their own and now, nearly 20 years later, I feel as welcome as I did when I showed up at CC 20 in 1986.” The Distinguished Alumni Award has been given since 1976 to an alumna/ us who has contributed to society through his/her work - professional

This year’s President’s Award recipient is Matthew G. Sautner ’90. Matt has been serving as the Mount Saint Mary College Alumni Association President for two years, and has been a part of the Alumni Association Board of Directors for the last four years. He is also the Class Agent for the Class of 1990 and has served as Reunion Chair for his class. A list of the way Matt lends his time and talents to the Mount could go on and on.

Blue Knights In The Community and on the air “It was a great experience for everyone,” said head coach Rachel Simone. “We had a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity for some team bonding. On top of that, we really appreciated being able to help out a bigger cause.” Members of the baseball team volunteered at the Jack O’Lantern Jubilee for city children. “We helped run the Haunted House,” said Steve Sosler, their coach. “The guys really worked hard.”

Women’s lacrosse teammates bond as Blue Knights in the Community: here working to rehab city housing.

T

he Mount Saint Mary College women’s lacrosse team launched the athletic department’s community service program, Blue Knights in the Community, with more than 30 members of the team helping Habitat for Humanity.

Each Mount Saint Mary College team will engage in Blue Knights in the Community service projects through the year. Watch for more BKITC.

The team traded in their sticks for shovels, buckets, and wheelbarrows at a build site in Newburgh. Where an abandoned building stood for 20 years, the new project will be a home for a single working mother with two children.

Scoring in sports broadcasting Ever wonder how sportscasters find all those highlights to squeeze into three minutes during nightly newscasts? Mount senior John M. Como knows. He scored an “awesome” internship in the sports department of WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in New York City. The Mount’s cooperative education program, part of the Career Center, is celebrating 20 years of arranging co-op jobs and internships for students. Como’s internship was certainly a coup.

The media studies/public relations major traveled by train three days a week to Manhattan. At WABC, Como monitored 12 TV’s, taking notes on sports and developing highlights. He worked with a video editor and sports anchor Scott Clark to craft the sports broadcast. The highlight of his internship was an interview he did with New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Como also enjoyed helping cover this year’s subway series between the Yankees and the Mets.

John Como ‘10 (right) interned at WABC-TV where he worked with sports producer Loren Emery.

Como is always in motion: whether it’s on the Kaplan soccer field, or doing a video. Last spring he interned for a documentary on Newburgh. This fall, thanks to Dean Goldberg, assistant professor of communication arts, he will assist a production company in Kingston. Como said Sr. Catherine Walsh, OP, and his Mount teachers helped him “learn about media and life.”

Blue Knights broadcasts Director of athletics John Wright announced Hudson Valley Radio Network will broadcast Mount Saint Mary College basketball games for the upcoming season. The first airings are scheduled for November 16, as the men head to Stony Brook University, and November 18, when the women take on SUNY New Paltz. Tune

in locally on WBNR 1260-AM Beacon, WLNA 1420-AM Peekskill, and WCHG 920-AM Kingston. The games can be heard online at www.hvradionet.com and www.msmcblueknights.com where a schedule is posted. Long-time broadcaster Robert Adams and Mount alumna Christine Baker ’95 will call the action.

The Mount women have won 10 consecutive Skyline Conference championships, made 10 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament, and advanced to the second round in the last two seasons. The men have experienced great success and seek a return to the top of the conference under new head coach Ryan Kadlubowski. FALL 2009 HAPPENINGS

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE

2008 – 2009 Honor Roll of Donors We are pleased to enclose this Honor Roll of Donors. This report, listing the names of our generous supporters, is just one indication of the tremendous assistance Mount Saint Mary College continues to receive from the many groups that comprise the MSMC “family”: our alumni, parents (of both current and former students), faculty, staff and administrators, students, and a growing number of people in the community who care about the college. This year’s success reflects even more involvement. Our enthusiastic class leaders joined their predecessors in reaching out to raise money for the Annual Fund. We have a growing number of active volunteers reaching out in a variety of ways, asking fellow alumni to lend their time, talent and treasure to ensure that a new generation of students will excel in a world of ever expanding challenges and opportunities. And we are particularly proud of faculty, staff and administrators who continue to support the Annual Fund in record numbers.

As we move forward with our ambitious plans for our deserving students, we will be calling upon and involving alumni and friends as never before. You will hear of opportunities to serve as a mentor to promising students and young alumni, and to participate in open discussions about our plans for Mount Saint Mary College. You will also be invited to events that are all about fun and fellowship. The Annual Fund is in many ways lifeblood: unrestricted, current-use funds that can offset expenses not covered by tuition and keep the cost of quality education within reach of working families. We are truly grateful for your continued support and dedication to Mount Saint Mary College. For further information on getting involved, please contact the Office of College Advancement at 845-569-3216 or e-mail valenti@msmc.edu

Music, Music, Music Mount Saint Mary College has hosted many noteworthy events. Aquinas Theatre opened in 1963 with the U.S. premiere of the opera “Dialogue of the Carmelites,” directed by Salvatore Baccaloni of the Metropolitan Opera. The Jackson 5 played the Mount: fronted by 11-year-old Michael Jackson. Also, the Vienna Choir Boys, Dizzy Gillespie, Broadway musicals. TV’s “American Idol” brought forth David Cook, who rocked Aquinas this spring. “Idol” finalist Danny Gokey, pictured amidst students/staff, had fans singing along with crowd pleasers like “Jesus, Take The Wheel.” At Mount Saint Mary College, you’re among the stars. Watch for historic highlights in our next magazine!
