These pages honor the generous benefactors of Mount Saint Mary College who have given their time, talent, and treasure in support of the College’s mission and our students. Your personal investment in the Mount is commendable, and I am grateful. Between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012, the Mount celebrated record-breaking generosity from people who share our commitment to provide a high-quality, values-based education to our deserving students. This Honor Roll of Donors is a testament to the caring spirit of our alumni, parents (of current students and alumni), faculty, staff, friends and the business community, and how greatly Mount Saint Mary College is valued by all of you. During the year, your gifts helped us to realize some remarkable goals. In keeping with our pursuit of higher levels of excellence for our students, new faculty joined our campus community in Arts & Letters, Mathematics and Information Technology, Nursing, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business. We also welcomed our new Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, Mary Hinton, Ph.D. Mary and her team work constantly to find ways to improve student learning, retention, and success. New academic programs were added, along with programs geared towards student wellbeing. We take our responsibility of being good stewards seriously. I am happy to report that we concluded the fiscal year in the black again. Our endowment investments – ensuring continuity and growth – have performed well despite the volatility in the economy. We also take our role in the Newburgh community to heart. Our students, faculty and staff serve in many community projects, including mentoring children, Habitat for Humanity, the Newburgh Community Cleanup, and other efforts throughout the year. On behalf of our students, their families, and the entire College community, I thank you for all that you continue to do to support Mount Saint Mary College.

William Larkin to advocate for continued student aid. The freshmen successfully completed their first-semester service project, hosting 30 high school-age students in collaboration with the Newburgh Liberty Partnerships Program. The women’s tennis team captures an NCAA bid. Residence Life hosts 119 events, covering topics such as personal safety, alcohol awareness, community outreach and wellness. Students raise funds to feed approximately 170 people in Newburgh, and create 36 boxes of supplies to donate to victims of Hurricane Irene. For the first time in the college’s history, the resident population surpasses 1,000. The women’s basketball team makes it to the NCAA Tournament. The women conclude the 2011-2012 season with an overall record of 25-4. The men’s basketball team caps a record-setting season with an 88-77 victory over Brooklyn College in the championship game of the ECAC Metro Region tournament to claim the first ECAC title in program history. They finish the season with an overall record of 23-7, the “winningest” season in school history. Mount Saint Mary College’s Sigma Tau chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, is presented with an Achieving Chapter Excellence Award for outstanding programming in support of the society’s mission and strategic goals.

O.P., professor of religious studies; and the Irish Heritage Festival of Orange County. Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm. and Campus Ministry enact the Living Stations of the Cross during the season of Lent. Two students sponsored by the Center for Adolescent Research and Development (CARD) are accepted for the prestigious American Educational Research Association undergraduate research workshop in April. The College’s 49th Commencement is held on May 19, 2012 on the Dominican Center field. The year marks the 49th commencement for the bachelor’s degrees, and the 27th commencement for the master’s degrees.
Forty Mount students study abroad in Italy, England, Spain, France, and Ireland. At Oxford in England, four students undertake one-to-one tutorials with Oxford professors in topics of their choosing. These students all receive grades in the “A” range. A new joint degree program with Fordham University is established. Students who complete the program will receive a B.A. in human services from Mount Saint Mary College and an M.S.W. from Fordham University.
FALL 2011 The Board of Trustees approves funding for construction management of the Dominican Center renovation. The conceptual design process continues which includes a new library/learning center, student housing and dining. The Dominican Center Tower is lit in the evenings as a beacon, both on campus and across the NewburghBeacon Bridge. The Center for Student Success pilot program begins, providing a variety of academic and personal support services to ensure that all Mount students have the resources they need to succeed. Advising, tutorial services, time-management assistance, and instruction in study skills are among the services offered. Students in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) meet with State Senator

The Chapel in the Dominican Center resounds with Christmas Vespers, directed by Durward Entrekin, Ph.D., Professor of Music. Nicholas Valentine, owner of Broadway Tailors, is recognized for providing tuxedos for the event since the mid-1970s. Later in the week, students join Fr. Francis Amodio, OCarm in the blessing of the crèche and a Christmas tree lighting ceremony where they also enjoy an ice-skating rink. During January break, selected nursing students and two nursing faculty travel to serve the poor in the Dominican Republic bringing along donated supplies.
SPRING 2012 The Habitat for Humanity Club travels to Huntsville, Alabama to help build a home for a needy family. Students, faculty and staff involve themselves in the Culture of Life: Love Yourself, Be Yourself, Be the Example campaign, geared towards broadening students’ awareness of the importance of respect, virtue, and moral development. Accounting students team up with PathStone Community Improvement to assist people with low to moderate incomes who need help with tax forms. Students train with an IRS rep. Mount students and alumni march in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade along with Fr. Kevin Mackin, President; Sr. Peggy Murphy,

SUMMER 2012 The Mount receives a $1,000,000 grant from the Dyson Foundation to fund expansion of the Center for Student Success and scholarships for 1st generation college students and underserved students. Five students will receive scholarships beginning in the fall of 2012. The Mount holds its 34th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament and Inaugural Tennis Tournament. The honorees for the 2012 Golf and new Tennis Tournament are Thomas Weddell of Vanacore DeBenedictus, DiGovanni and Weddell, and Philip DeAngelo of Focused Wealth Management, Inc.

SURE: Student research program at the Mount Through the Mount’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program, all Mount Saint Mary College students have the opportunity to apply for paid summer research positions with participating faculty mentors. Students who are chosen for this program work closely with faculty members to carry out a research project, and analyze and present their results. While taking part in this summer program, students and their mentors have many opportunities to interact with participants across disciplines, both academically and socially, through weekly progress updates and activities such as hikes, picnics, and volleyball.

Theatre at the mount MSMC Theatre’s production of Machinal, a play by Sophie Treadwell, ran from November 10 through the 12, 2011 at the College. This production included Mount students, alumni, faculty, and students from SUNY Orange in an excellent collaborative effort. James Phillips, associate professor of theatre at the Mount, directed the play. Faculty vs. Students Volleyball Showdown
S
tudents going about their day-to-day activities at the Mount are sometimes unaware that their education is made better by donations from many generous alumni, parents, friends and businesses who give to the MSMC Annual Fund each year. So, on April 3, 2012, the Advancement Office and the Student Activities Office sponsored an “awareness event,” the inaugural MSMC Annual FUNd Event featuring a Faculty vs. Student Volleyball Showdown. It was a way for students to learn about the MSMC Annual Fund while having a lot of fun, too. Tickets were sold for $3, and all proceeds supported the 2011-2012 MSMC Annual Fund. As students and employees entered the Kaplan Recreation Center for the Volleyball Showdown, they answered questions about the MSMC Annual Fund. The names of the students who chose the correct answers were entered into a raffle. The competition began. The student team (Knight Strikers) and the faculty team (Top Guns) faced off in the volleyball showdown. Excitement was in the air as the teams battled it out for the championship. Nursing students manned a faux “Resuscitation Station” just in case any faculty member on the Top Guns team needed a little “medical assistance.” The Knight Strikers took the first game, 25-21, but the second game belonged to the Top Guns team. Finally, the Knight Strikers proved victorious by winning the third game for the championship and the trophy. During intermission, Father Kevin Mackin, the Mount’s president, spoke about the MSMC Annual Fund, and announced the winners of the raffle and the door prize. The Mount cheerleading team performed an amazing routine wearing purple t-shirts that read “Funding a Cure for PC” to bring awareness to the fight against pancreatic cancer. The night proved to be a memorable success. By the end of the evening, students and faculty were already talking about the match for next year. The faculty team have already starting doing their jumping jacks!
