Dear Alumni, Parents, Friends, Faculty and Staff, The spirit of community, a hallmark of the Mount Saint Mary College experience, was clearly evident during the 2010–11 year.

And, once again, the Mount celebrates recordbreaking generosity of those who share our commitment to provide a high quality, values-based education to our deserving students.

The Honor Roll of Donors documents extraordinary support from alumni, parents (of current students and alumni), faculty, staff, friends and members of the business community. This is a testament to how greatly the mission of Mount Saint Mary College is valued by those who know it best.

The Annual Fund is a crucial component of our efforts to keep the cost of a Mount education within the financial reach of our students and their families. Happily, I can report our most successful Annual Fund on record: up by more than 15%. This is truly an accomplishment of which we can all be proud.

As we move forward with ambitious plans that include the renovation of the newly acquired Dominican Center, we can take this on with the confidence that a loyal community supports our efforts. To ensure that current and future Mount students have the resources for acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their lives and careers, the Dominican Center will be remodeled with a state-of-the-art library/learning commons and residence facilities, while maintaining its magnificent chapel. This will be a fitting tribute to our heritage and mission.

Move-In Day Graduation, May 2011 Women’s Basketball Team SUMMER 2010 MBA students, led by James Gearity, Division of Business Chair, develop new marketing/ business plans for the Newburgh Armory renovation project.

FALL 2010 The Mount welcomes 450 freshmen plus 150 transfer students and their families during opening day.

The College’s total enrollment is approximately 2,700.

The 51st Academic Convocation is well attended by 1,095 people including 390 freshmen, 155 Dean’s List and 17 honors/scholarship recipients.

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra performs at Tribute to the Dominican Sisters of Hope in the Aquinas Hall Theatre.

The Mount holds its Inaugural Gala Reception. The Joseph A. Bonura Award for Leadership Excellence is bestowed upon David S. MacFarland, president and CEO of Riverside Bank, and Dr. John A. D’Ambrosio, president of Orange County Chamber of Commerce. The Gala raises more than $85,000.

A new hybrid RN to BSN program is launched for registered nurses who wish to earn bachelor’s degrees.

SPRING 2011 MSMC Theatre presents The Imaginary Invalid, a three-act comedy by French playwright Molière.

The grand opening of the new KnightRadio Station is held.

The new station features hi-tech equipment in the control room, studios and server room.

Fox news anchor Bret Baier and author Barbara Tayor Bradford speak at the Mount’s 48th Commencement. James W. Taylor, Jr., president and CEO of Biomass Energy, LLC and Taylor Recycling receives an honorary degree. Over 618 bachelor’s and master’s degrees were awarded to graduates.

SUMMER 2011 The 33rd Annual Invitational Golf Tournament honoring James P. Smith, Jr., College Trustee and CEO of Advance Testing, raises $90,000.

The SURE Summer Undergraduate Research Experience supports 16 student researchers working with 17 faculty members.

John & Mary Jo McDermott, MSMC Parents, reflect on

The importance of giving

“M

ary Jo and I were each raised on the principle that when we have an opportunity to help others, we should do so,” said John McDermott, father of Tara McDermott ’14. “We believe in supporting the schools of our family members and our church, among other organizations,” he said.

“We couldn’t be happier with Tara’s experience at the Mount,” said John, whose family recently moved to California from New Jersey. “I attended Catholic schools at all levels and believe in the values of a Catholic-based education,” he said. “Plus, with Tara being the youngest of our three children, we’ve become familiar with a fair number of colleges and universities. The size and feel of the Mount is just great and Tara, a business major, is very pleased with the academics and small class size.”

An athlete who plays soccer for the Mount and earned a place on the Skyline All-Conference Team her freshman year, Tara enjoys playing on the new turf field. “The resources and accessibility of the Mount staff, on both the athletic and academic sides, are excellent. Also, there is a great camaraderie among the athletes of the various sports teams,” John added.

John McDermott visits the Mount In addition to supporting the campus to cheer on the women’s soccer team in a Skyline Conference playoff Mount’s Annual Fund and other game.

College programs, the McDermott family established its own tradition several years ago of assisting various charities in connection with the Christmas holidays. John shared, “We realized that our family was fortunate and in a position to make a difference for others, so we scaled back giving presents among ourselves and instead chose to give to organizations that were important to each of us. We do our research and then choose accordingly. For example, Tara has given to a youth soccer program in Texas and helped a child in the Philippines through Catholic Charities. Mary Jo helps an organization that benefits children suffering from cleft lips and palates. Katie, our oldest daughter and an ardent Yankee fan, supports Derek Jeter’s foundation that works to encourage healthy lifestyles for at-risk children, while our son John supports various ministries at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame.”

“As a family, we decided to make the Mount one of our giving priorities because we feel it is important to help the College continue to invest in its faculty, programs, and facilities,” said John.

ount Saint Mary College joined with the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan to co-host an estate planning seminar in June focused on multi-generational estate planning. Featured speakers were Edie Haughney, CIMA® assistant vice president and financial advisor of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; Mark Stern, attorney and MSMC alumni parent (Edward Stern MSE ’03); Karen Van Houten Minogue, executive director of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan; and Wendy Boglioli, 1976 Olympic swimming gold medalist and national spokesperson for Genworth Financial.

Bequest of Bernice Hornibrook Supports Library Resources and Scholarships

B

ernice “Bunny” Hornibrook was a forthright, detail-oriented, and determined woman who lived modestly, yet left one of the largest bequests ever received by Mount Saint Mary College.

In excess of $1.5 million, Mrs. Hornibrook’s enlightened generosity created two permanent endowments: the Bernice J. and Dr. Walter J. Hornibrook Memorial Library Fund and the Bernice J. and Dr. Walter J. Hornibrook Memorial Scholarship Fund. The first will provide yearly unrestricted support for the College’s Curtin Memorial Walter and Bernice Library, while the latter will fund up to Hornibrook four scholarships annually for young women who have earned at least 30 college credits.

During her lifetime, Mrs. Hornibrook made certain through prudent financial planning with her attorney and college officials that her estate would be put to good use. By creating endowed funds at the College, she was ensuring that students for generations to come would benefit from the resources that the Hornibrooks built over time. The Mount dedicated the Collaborative Learning Center on the library’s main floor in honor of Walter and Bernice Hornibrook during a special celebration with family and friends in October 2010.

Living Legacy Society

O

f all the distinguishing traits that define the human spirit, perhaps the most noble is the desire to create a legacy that will positively influence a world that we may never see, and help those we may never know. This ideal is clearly present among the alumni, parents, and friends of the Mount who, through their foresight and generosity, have become members of the Mount Saint Mary College Living Legacy Society.

Each member of the Living Legacy Society chooses to play a role in the lives of future generations of Mount students through the creation of a bequest intention or planned gift such as a charitable gift annuity, insurance policy, or charitable trust. By making their intentions known, these individuals afford the College an opportunity to recognize their commitment during their lifetimes and can play a greater role in the designation of their gifts.

Much like the Dominican Sisters who founded Mount Saint Mary College, Living Legacy Society members place their faith in the value of the mission and traditions that are at the root of the excellent educational experience provided at the Mount.
