Letter from the President Dear Alumni, Students, Parents, and Friends of Mount Saint Mary College, Lately, the campus has been abuzz with a cornucopia of exciting academic, athletic, social, and service events. A variety of lectures, conferences, workshops, and symposia have instructed and delighted attendees—whether the subject was alumni careers or the presentation of original scientific research. In 2016, the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order, we have many reasons to celebrate our heritage and to be proud of our students, faculty, alumni, administrators, staff and of all of those who work hard to make the Mount into the remarkable place that it is. In the fall semester, we hosted a riveting lecture by Colonel Darling—an eye witness at The White House to the events of 9-11, welcomed volumes of the famous Saint John’s Bible to campus, sent a delegation of students and staff to attend Pope Francis’s mass at Madison Square Garden, celebrated inductees to the Mount’s Athletic Hall of Fame, sponsored an extremely successful conference on “Business as a Calling,” and presented “The Women of Lockerbie.” The fall semester ended with many events that brightened the dark December days. Hundreds of guests attended our sixth annual Gala—a triumph of decoration and hospitality. An equal number flocked to our superlative, fortieth Christmas Vespers held in the resplendent Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary. The Tree Lighting—presided over by our chaplain, Father Francis, and accompanied with Christmas carols, prayers, hot chocolate, and cookies warmed all the participants despite the chill and wind. The December nurse pinning ceremony for 45 graduates warmed hearts as well. Speaking of heart-warming, I think you’ll enjoy reading about the many ways in which Mount students, faculty, coaches, and others are contributing to the local community—whether through blood drives, Thanksgiving donations, working with Habitat for Humanity, or helping local children at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. This issue emphasizes the continuing contribution that the College makes in the field of education. We are delighted to highlight Dana McDonough ’91, New York State Teacher of the Year, as well as alumna Debra Calvino ’81 who previously won that honor. Be sure also to read about Mount student Mary Bocskocsky’s experience teaching in Africa, Professor Rebecca Norman’s Bishop Dunn literacy class, and our remarkably successful literacy programs at the Newburgh Armory. In these pages you will meet two of the talented administrators who have recently joined us at the Mount: Dr. Michael Olivette, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Art Glass, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and you will also see a snapshot of three beloved professors who have completed forty years of service here: Thomas Sarro, Bill Lahar, and John Reilly. Finally, we hope you’ll take a look at our Lighting the Way scholarship initiative which aims to enable minority students who attend Newburgh’s Nora Cronin and San Miguel Academies to attend the Mount. What a great way to continue MSMC’s tradition of helping students who are the first in their families to go to college! With every good wish for a 2016 full of blessings and graces, Carson Daly

The “Business as a Calling” panel, moderated by professor Moira Tolan, featured four exceptional business leaders.
Community-minded business
T
he recent “Business as a Calling” panel at Mount Saint Mary College featured local business leaders who elevate society through ethical community practices and positive treatment of employees. “The business leaders on the panel have spent their entire careers focusing on business as a tool for responding to societal needs,” explained business professor Moira Tolan. “They have utilized their talents in the business world in a way that has enriched society.” Carl Meyer is the founder of the Center for Global Advanced Manufacturing, former president/CEO of Central Hudson Gas and Electric, and president/CEO of The Solar Energy Consortium. TSEC is a not-forprofit dedicated to providing small and medium-sized manufacturers in the region with technical and business support services to enable them to grow. “I really felt like I had to give something back to the community, because the community has been so good to me,” said Meyer, on working with nonprofits. “There’s a tremendous need out there.” Denise Doring VanBuren, vice president of Public Relations for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, encouraged audience members to seek employment with ethical, community-oriented businesses. “The reason why I have loved going to work every day is because of the culture at Central Hudson,” she

explained. “We care about the customers and the community that we serve. I’ve not once in 22 years seen a decision that’s not in the best interest of the customers.” VanBuren, who graduated from the Mount in 1997 with a master’s degree in business administration, was also honored in December with the Joseph A. Bonura Award for Leadership Excellence at the Mount’s Sixth Annual Gala Reception. Also on the distinguished business panel were John McAvoy, chairman, president and CEO of Consolidated Edison, Inc.; and Douglas Murphy, founder and president of Murphy International. Since joining Consolidated Edison in 1980, McAvoy served as senior vice president of central operations, with responsibilities for the planning, design, operations and maintenance of the electric generation, transmission and substations systems, the generation and distribution of the steam system and construction activities for the company. Murphy has developed a diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects ranging from greenfield to acquisition and repowering. He has more than 20 years of diverse professional experience including energy production, project development, and hazardous waste remediation and processing, with special emphasis on renewable projects.

eight centuries embers of the Dominican Sisters of Hope and the Mount Saint Mary College community gathered recently to celebrate the beginning of the 800th Jubilee Year of the Order of Preachers. The Solemn Vespers service was held in the Mount’s Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary in the Dominican Center. Saint Dominic de Guzman, from Spain, established the first community of the Order of Preachers in the 13th century in France. Dominican Sisters founded the Mount in 1959, using as guidelines the four pillars of the Order’s life: study, prayer, service, and community. “We are proud of the deep spiritual and intellectual roots from which Mount Saint Mary College has sprung and is continually nourished,” said Charles Zola, philosophy and religion chair and director of the college’s Catholic and Dominican Institute. “We all are indebted to the great sacrifices and example of [the sisters] who founded the college.” Former Mount communications professor Sr. Catherine Walsh,
T
OP, who has been a Dominican Sister for more than five decades, preached at the Solemn Vespers. “Our right work is to praise, to bless, and to preach. This is our mission,” she said. “Preach goodness. Preach peace. Preach from study and contemplation. Preach from prayer and community. Preach justice. Preach from a dialogue with our world. And preach with the mercy and compassion Saint Dominic insisted on.”
he Dominican Heritage Wall chronicles the Mount’s beginnings, from the arrival of the Dominican Sisters in Newburgh, N.Y., in 1893 to the college’s earliest leadership and academic triumphs. Located on the first floor of Aquinas Hall, its panels features archival photos and key information about the college through the early 1970s. The project was sponsored by the Mount’s Catholic and Dominican Institute (CDI). Charles Zola, CDI director and philosophy and religion chair, likens the Dominican Heritage Wall to a family photo album being shared with “later generations.” The project is also “a tribute to the incredible strength of character and courage” of the Dominican Sisters who founded Mount Saint Mary Academy and, eventually, Mount Saint Mary College. “In this Jubilee Year, I hope that our campus community will have a renewed appreciation for the deep spiritual and intellectual roots of the college that stretch back over eight centuries,” said Zola. Plans to add to the Dominican Heritage Wall are underway, Zola added. www.msmc.edu

Nurturing leadership skills
A
s a prelude to the fall semester, nearly a dozen freshmen completed the Dyson Summer Leadership Institute, a comprehensive program designed to support the transition of first-year Mount students. The program was coordinated by Megan Morrissey, an academic coach/advisor with the college’s Center for Student Success, and Himali Pandya, assistant director of student activities. According to Morrissey, the Dyson Summer Leadership Institute was designed to offer the entering freshmen “valuable leadership experience and academic skills” in advance of the fall semester. The students enjoyed a variety of development activities and interactive sessions. They also benefited from academic coaching and leadership development at a ropes course at Ramapo for Children in Rhinebeck, N.Y. Each of the freshmen is from the Hudson Valley, and is either a first-generation college student or comes from an economically disadvantaged/historically underserved background. The Institute is funded through the Dyson Foundation and presented in partnership with the college’s Student Affairs office and the Center for Student Success.

Lt. Col. Darling gave his talk, “Never Forget,” on September 11, 2015.
R
obert J. Darling, USMC, had been tasked with coordinating President George W. Bush’s travel logistics, but on September 11, 2001, he was thrust into the heart of the action at The White House. On September 11, 2015 at the Mount, retired Lt. Col. Darling, author of “24 Hours in the President’s Bunker, 9-11-2001,” offered a minute-byminute account of the critical hours after the terrorist attacks. After both planes crashed into the Twin Towers, and The Pentagon was attacked at 9:43 a.m., Darling headed to the President’s bunker to continue his duties. A military aide of Vice President Dick Cheney told Darling to “forget logistics” and start answering phones. The first call he took, from the situation room in the West Wing, said that there was another hijacked plane headed toward Washington D.C. As the plane got closer, Darling said, Cheney ordered two F-15s to shoot it down. At 10:05 a.m., they heard the news: aircraft down, 68 miles away from Pittsburgh. “We thought we had just shot United Flight 93 out of the sky,” said Darling. However, the F-15s never fired. Instead, passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 fought against the four terrorists controlling the hijacked plane. After the order came to land all non-military planes in U.S. airspace, a Medevac helicopter heading to the Pentagon was nearly shot down because it was communicating on the wrong channel. Darling described the mistake as “the fog of war,” and said he was thankful the doctors aboard the helicopter escaped unharmed. Darling, who graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, served in the Middle East and Africa, prior to joining The White House Military Office, Airlift Operations Department. His lecture at the Mount, attended by approximately 500 people, was made possible by Nick Preddice of the Affinity Group, LLC; MassMutual Albany and Hudson Valley; Fox Radio; Finkelstein and Partners, LLP; and the Samuel D. Affron Memorial Lecture Series. Jerome S. Affron, a former Mount trustee, established the lecture series in honor of his father in 1982. Also on September 11 last fall, students attended a candlelight remembrance Mass at the college. Most of today’s freshmen were in kindergarten or pre-k at the time of the 2001 attack.

Playwright Deborah Brevoort discussed her work with MSMC Theatre students and professor James Philips.
Perspective from the playwright
D
Scenes from “The Women of Lockerbie”
uring a visit to the college, playwright/librettist Deborah Brevoort confided to Mount students, “Sometimes a play will come in a flash of inspiration. It’s a little bit like being struck by lightning,” “The Women of Lockerbie” was one of those plays, she explained. In this powerful drama, recently performed by the college’s theater group and directed by associate theater professor James Phillips, an American mother roams the Scottish hills looking for the remains of her son who was lost in a plane accident. Women of Lockerbie decide to wash the clothing recovered from the crash site and return it to the victims’ families. The story is based on a real-life incident in the late 1980s. Though she comes up with new concepts easily, Brevoort said, “the idea that you actually write is a very particular, very singular thing. And the ideas that are worth writing are the ones that stick with you.” She added, “the story chooses you.” With Brevoort’s visit fresh in their minds, the Mount cast performed together well, Phillips praised. The cast and crew included Eliza Benfer, Meghan Hartnett, Ashley Mejia, Emily Howitz, Rebecca Gordils, Brian Lopez, Brenna Cooney, John Ferretti, and Lindsay Ostrander. Phillips selected “Lockerbie” for its “excellent and moving” portrayal of grief and consolation. “There’s a lot in this play about stepping into these people’s shoes, living their lives, and developing empathy for the suffering of other people,” explained Phillips. “I think there’s a wonderful message in what you can do to make someone else’s life better.” “Women of Lockerbie” won the Kennedy Center’s Fund for New American Plays Award and the silver medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition. Brevoort’s other works include “The Comfort Team,” about military wives during the Iraq surge; it was the first-ever theatre project to receive a grant from the Harpo Foundation. www.msmc.edu

Scribes & scriptures Talk illuminates Saint John’s Bible
F
rom ancient calligraphy to modern wonders, Tim Ternes, director of the Saint John’s Bible at Saint John’s University, enthralled the Mount community with his presentation “From Inspiration to Illumination: A Handwritten Bible for the 21st Century.” Using medieval inks, materials, and methods, a team of 20 artists and calligraphers worked for 15 years to prepare the seven volumes that comprise the Saint John’s Bible. Donald Jackson, world famous calligrapher, and his team looked to the past to preserve the Bible for the future. While normal paper deteriorates in about 50 years, the cowhide pages of the Saint John’s Bible will remain unscathed for up to 2,000 years, Ternes explained. Jackson and his team handwrote the Saint John’s Bible using quill pens and special inks composed of condensed candle smoke and egg whites. The protein in the egg will help the ink stay on the pages for centuries, Ternes revealed. Mount Saint Mary College kicked off its year with the Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition in June 2015. It will remain at the Mount campus throughout the 2015-16 academic year. Ternes’ talk was co-sponsored by the Mount’s Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center, the Catholic and Dominican Institute, and the Division of Arts and Letters.

early 40 Mount Saint Mary College students joined 20,000 faithful at Pope Francis’s recent Mass at Madison Square Garden. Pope Francis discussed the challenges of life in a large city and expressed concern for the Big Apple’s underprivileged citizens. For Mount public relations major Clare O’Keefe, the Mass was a life-changing experience. “It was unbelievable,” said O’Keefe. “As soon as the Pope came in, I immediately felt a very spiritual presence.” The chance to attend the Mass was a dream come true for her. “Pope Francis is a very humble man and it really showed,” she explained. “His humility is contagious.” William Wiacek, a biology student on the physical therapy track, said that the Pope’s message was deeply moving. “It showed how much he loves New York…how much of a family we actually are, and how much we need to help everybody,” he noted. The Mount students were joined by Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm, campus chaplain and director of campus ministry; Charles Zola, director of the Catholic and Dominican Institute and chair of philosophy and religious studies; Jeanne Conboy of the Institute; Sandra Cefaloni-Henderson, director of student activities; Sr. Peggy Murphy, OP, religious studies professor; and James Raimo, vice president for facilities and operations at the Mount.

Nurse pinning celebrates Mount’s newest graduates
M
ount Saint Mary College recently held a pinning ceremony for 45 graduates of the college’s nursing program. Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm., campus chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, blessed the pins, which were presented to the graduates by chosen family members and friends. The nursing pins display the college seal and the motto, “doce me veritatem,” which translates as “teach me the truth.” Mount President Dr. Anne Carson Daly congratulated the nursing students on a job well done. “Your real apprenticeship has been in love,” she said. “Love of neighbor, love of learning, love of science, but most of all, love of helping others and sparing them pain.” Nursing professors Susan Schulmerich, Priscilla Sagar and Teresa Hurley offered the graduates words of encouragement and advice for their upcoming nursing careers. New graduate Benjamin Hayes gave his reflections, crediting the group’s professors with molding them into the nurses they are today.

“We’re the human face of healthcare, the first point of contact and the last line of defense in the hospital,” he said. “I have seen these traits in everyone on stage today. We started out as students and now we are nurses.” The students were full of praise for their families. Liza AmatoPassante said she couldn’t have graduated without the support of her parents. “Since I was a child, my parents wanted me to do something in medicine,” she said. “I hope today I make them proud. Thank you for instilling in me the qualities that will make me a great nurse.” To close the ceremony, the newly-minted nurses recited “A Nurse’s Prayer,” which speaks of dedicating one’s life to helping others.

ames V. McEnery, associate professor emeritus of English, passed away on December 24, 2015. McEnery, of Cornwall, N.Y., was the only layperson and the only male instructor during the college’s first academic year in 1960, and served as master of ceremonies at Commencement from 1971 through 1987. Since the Mount’s first commencement in 1964, only two people have led the procession: McEnery and James Finn Cotter, longtime Mount English professor. “James McEnery remained as sharp and witty at the end of his 99 years on Earth as he was when we first met as members of the English Department in September of 1963,” said Cotter. “He started each day with The New York Times crossword puzzle and would dispatch them quickly.” McEnery chaired the college’s English department from 1970 to 1977. In 1983 he received the Mount’s Faculty Award, and in 1985 McEnery received the Trustees Award, “for his love for the Mount and his humanitarian approach to life.” “Jim loved his students,” explained Cotter. “He always had lunch with them, learned their names and remembered them long after they had graduated. He was a genuinely dedicated teacher with a love for the Mount from his arrival in 1960. He kept all the yearbooks, minutes, memorabilia, autographs of visiting speakers, and photographs he took himself. He embodied ‘college professor’ to a T with his signature bow tie, tweed jacket and pipe.” www.msmc.edu

Four decades of teaching excellence
T
hree professors recently celebrated an important milestone: their 40th year of teaching at Mount Saint Mary College. William Lahar (chemistry), John T. Reilly (history), and Thomas Sarro (biology) started their careers at the college in 1975. The professors joined the Mount community the year the Vietnam War wound down after nearly two decades. Saturday Night Live debuted, and the Captain and Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together” topped the Billboard charts. In 1970, barely a decade after its founding, the Mount graduated its first male students, including Thomas Kirwan, who would eventually be elected to the New York State Assembly. There were only two history professors as of 1975, and Reilly taught nearly all courses offered in the field. Lahar, Reilly, and Sarro are the college’s longest-serving professors after James Finn Cotter, professor of English, who has taught at the Mount since 1963.
Housed in Aquinas Hall, the Office of Student Support integrates the Center for Student Success, Counseling, and Services for Students with Disabilities, to better assist students with tutoring, academic coaching, and counseling, while ensuring effective staff, faculty, and administrator collaboration. Orin Strauchler, PsyD, heads the office as assistant dean of Student Support Services and director of Counseling. Ilona McGuiness, Vice President for Academic Affairs, said that the Office of Student Support provides “the most efficient and full support to our students possible. Creating a common space to welcome and assist students will be a great benefit.”

Mount offers new criminology major Mount Saint Mary College plans to launch a new criminology major this fall. Formulated by associate criminology professor Jenifer Lee-Gonyea, the program will explore the varied aspects of crime, from the process of defining crime, victimization, and the criminal justice system, to exploring society’s response to criminals and the reasons people break the law. “Students will get a nuanced exposure to understanding why crime happens, what to do after it happens, and what we can do to stop it,” explained Lee-Gonyea. Those who complete the criminology program will have varied career options, including positions in law enforcement, corrections, community service agencies, child welfare programs, adult protective Lee-Gonyea services, mental health, and more. While the terms “criminology” and “criminal justice” are often used interchangeably, they reference two distinct disciplines, notes Lee-Gonyea. Criminal justice, she explained, focuses on components and functions of the criminal justice system, such as law enforcement, courts, and corrections. However, in addition to the criminal justice system, criminology also examines causation, consequences of crime for the offender and victim, and prevention techniques that are not retributive in nature. “Criminology is a discipline that originated from sociology and focuses on the scientific study of the making and breaking of laws, and society’s reaction to the breaking of laws,” Lee-Gonyea said. “This discipline focuses on all relevant parties and all aspects of crime,” such as what conditions in society may contribute to crime taking place; why persons or groups become victims of crime; what type of crime takes place most often; where crime takes place; and how crime might be prevented. Students can choose one of four concentrations: general, for students interested in a variety of areas; criminal justice system; juvenile justice; and restorative justice, for students interested in alternative approaches to addressing crime by involving offenders, victims, and the community. The Mount’s criminology major requires students to complete 120 credits to receive a bachelor’s degree, including 45 credits in the major, electives, and required general education courses. An 18-credit minor in criminology will also be available to students starting this fall. Lee-Gonyea earned a PhD in criminology from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Marshall University in West Virginia. She began teaching at Mount Saint Mary College in 2008. Her scholarly work has been published in the Journal of Research in Education; the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice; the International Journal of Crime, Criminal Justice, and Criminal Law; and more.

M
ount alumna Dana McDonough knows a thing or two about educational excellence: She was recently named the New York State Teacher of the Year for 2016. McDonough graduated from the Mount in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in social science and in 2000 with a Master of Science in Education with a reading specialization. She teaches second grade at Fostertown Magnet School in the Newburgh City School District, where she has served for 22 years. The Newburgh native holds a permanent New York State certification in elementary education. She first wanted to become a teacher when, at the age of eight, she visited her Aunt Arlene Sosta’s elementary classroom at Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School. Sosta was a member of the Mount’s first graduating class of laypersons in 1964. Noting her aunt’s success, McDonough attended the Mount as well. Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching? A: I enjoy the connections that I make with my students and families. I consider it a privilege to welcome each student, and to recognize that I will have successes and challenges that will make me grow as a teacher. Q: What qualities or habits does a great teacher need? A: To be able to communicate effectively to each student, to identify the strengths in each student and teach to those, and to demonstrate the passion that they possess. Q: In what ways has teaching changed since you graduated from the Mount? A: In order to teach students, you have to reach them. Today it requires more creativity and stamina! Q: Discuss one teaching challenge that you overcame. A: Balancing family time and the needs of the teaching profession. Once you overcome one challenge, you may be faced with another one. It is important that you have a support system such as your colleagues, administration, and community stakeholders who can assist when you need the guidance to overcome these challenges. Q: What do you hope to accomplish in the future? A: My overarching goal is that I have a positive impact on each student and that they see what lies beyond the four walls of the classroom. Q: Who at the Mount helped mold you into the teacher you are today? A: I had many wonderful professors. Joan Miller, Sr. Frances Berski, Sr. Jean Rosaire Bedotto, and Lucy DiPaola stand out in my mind. They helped me to dig deep and see what my strengths were and gave me the tools to help me be the teacher that I am today. Q: What is your advice to current education students? A: As you begin your career, realize that when you educate a child, you educate a family and, in some cases, a community. Let your passion drive your teaching!
Debra Calvino
Teacher of the Year 2010
Dana McDonough is the second Mount grad to be named Teacher of the Year by the New York State Education Department. Debra (Santora) Calvino ’81 also earned the honor, in 2010. Calvino taught mathematics for 33 years in the Valley Central School District in Orange County, N.Y. before transitioning to Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Testing for the district in 2014. According to Calvino, excelling as an educator lies in varied teaching techniques, learning each student’s strengths and improving his or her weaknesses, and working with colleagues and the community to better each child. “A great teacher is studentcentered and focused,” she explained. “Regardless of the current thinking, the rhetoric, the economy, or the headlines, good teachers are the heart and soul of supporting and encouraging learners of all ages to become the best they can be.” Calvino credits much of her success as a teacher to her robust Mount education. “I was comprehensively prepared in the vital tenets of the teaching profession from the Mount,” she explained. “Mathematics taught me how to think logically and how to problem solve, while psychology classes gave me invaluable insight into the behavior of the child and the adolescent. Courses in elementary and secondary education gave me skills in creative lesson planning despite the subject or topic. And my special education training helped me to discover the perspective that each individual child has the capacity to grow.” www.msmc.edu

From N.Y. to

using hands-on education with a passion for philanthropy, Mary Bocskocsky ’15 recently taught basic math and English skills to underprivileged children in South Africa. Bocskocsky wanted to put her teaching techniques to the test before graduating in December 2015, and decided to make a humanitarian journey to Gordon’s Bay in Cape Town, South Africa. At the Ikhaya le Themba (Home of Hope) shelter, Bocskocsky spent weeks teaching basic literacy and mathematic skills to a classroom of three- to five-year-olds. The teacher candidate increased her students’ skills by reading to them, singing songs, introducing them to math problems, and having them write the alphabet on a small blackboard. “While I was teaching in South Africa, I saw how much I had gained from the Mount’s education program,” she explained. “Without my Mount classes, I wouldn’t have been able to do this.” Some parts of Cape Town are nearly indistinguishable from any prosperous American city. However, other areas

are a far cry from New York. “It was a hard reality to accept, that they live in such poverty,” Bocskocsky said. “It made me very thankful for what I have at home. Just waking up is a gift. And a warm shower is a luxury I’m lucky to have.” But the residents were always in good spirits. “There’s a huge sense of community there,” she reported. Returning from Africa for the fall 2015 semester, Bocskocsky also student taught at Glenham Elementary School in Beacon, N.Y. Under the tutelage of cooperating teacher Danielle Yeaple, a Mount graduate, Bocskocsky educated second and third grade children. “I tell my students that there are kids in South Africa, just like them, learning how to read,” she explained. “And that makes them want to learn
more about different cultures.” The Mount was vital in Bocskocsky’s preparation in the classroom and evolution as a teacher. Professor Jane Gangi “had a great influence” on her, she explained. “She really focuses on literacy. She’s very passionate about what she teaches and that carries over to us and our students.” Bocskocsky hopes to create a recurring humanitarian trip to South Africa for Mount education students, similar to the School of Nursing’s annual journey to impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic. Last spring break, more than a dozen Mount nursing students assessed health and provided care to individuals and families. “If other students could experience what I did,” said Bocskocsky, “it could really help them grow as a person and a teacher.”
Literacy programs make an impact

Mount undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines volunteer at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, lending their skills to reading programs for children, classes in English as a second language, and more. At Family Literacy Nights held periodically, children of all ages and their families enjoy a variety of activities for multiple intelligences, such as storytelling workshops, poetry stations, and literature-inspired performances from Mount education professors and students. Events have drawn nearly 300 participants. “Book clubs” are offered through the Mount’s Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL), wherein college volunteers help young students to explore literature that reflects various cultural backgrounds and interests of the community. “The goal is to create lifelong readers instead of those who only read because they have to for school,” said Janine Bixler, chair of the college’s Division of Education.

o an observer, it might look like they’re conducting an art class. But nearly two dozen Mount teacher candidates were actually showing their young students how to paint with words. In Methods for Teaching English Language Arts, the Mount students taught the Picturing Writing technique to a fourth-grade class and a prekindergarten class from Bishop Dunn Memorial School. According to assistant education professor Rebecca Norman, painting a scene helps to inform the young students during the writing process. Norman and associate professor Jane Gangi were trained in the technique over the summer. “Research shows that using the Picturing Writing technique, students write more, have more descriptive words, and are more motivated,” Norman explained. Mount teacher candidates gave lessons on verb usage, adjectives, personification, similes, metaphors and more. Payge Yerkes, an IT major on the childhood education track, said she saw an improvement in her young students’ writing, as well as in her own teaching skills. “I think this is a technique I’ll use in my own classroom someday,” Yerkes said, adding that Norman’s class has been an excellent learning experience for her. Janine Bixler, professor and chair of the college’s education division, successfully implemented the Picturing Writing technique in children’s summer literacy courses at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. The young students read several pages from their self-published and illustrated books to their parents, peers, and New York State Senator William J. Larkin, Jr.

A new generation of education Mount student teacher flourishes in classroom
One of student teacher Lindsay Roe’s greatest joys has been cultivating a love of learning in students at North Main Elementary in Monroe, N.Y. Roe, a history major on the childhood/special education track, took the reins in cooperative teacher Helen Vanier’s 12-student, self-contained third grade classroom. A few weeks before, Roe taught a mid-sized class of fifth graders under the guidance of Dina Shortall. Both experiences have confirmed what Roe already knew: “I’m definitely in the right profession,” she revealed. Roe also sharpened her teaching skills during the summer session through an internship with the Breakthrough Collaborative, an organization that prepares low-income middle school students for promising college careers. Roe was chosen from 700 candidates vying for 50 positions. Her peers included students from Yale, Harvard, and Princeton universities. Living in Brooklyn, Roe taught eighth-grade literature to exceptional children from throughout New York City. In only six weeks, the students read, analyzed, and reported on novels including “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Fahrenheit 451.” “My professors at the Mount have taught me how to teach,” said Roe. “I was able to put that to use and I feel thoroughly prepared for whatever comes next.” www.msmc.edu

Survival of the fullest A hands-on ecology lesson
College students foraging for food might bring to mind instant noodles, microwave sandwiches, and mac and cheese. But assistant biology professor Douglas Robinson’s ecology class recently examined foraging through a scientific lens. During a lesson on optimal foraging, Robinson and his class headed to the college’s baseball field. The students were split into two groups – generalists and specialists – with generalists able to “survive” on either one brown bean or five white beans. Specialists, however, could only “eat” brown beans. The beans were scattered around a small patch of grass, and over the course of eight 30-second trials, or “days,” both sets of students searched for their required beans to make it to the next trial. The search mirrored the foraging challenges faced by many kinds of animals and highlighted the concepts discussed in the course. Robinson’s students noted that if the percentage of brown beans in the area fell below 25, specialists did poorly. Generalists, however, maintained a certain level of success regardless of which energy source was most abundant. “Getting the students involved in the material during lab is an excellent way to reinforce the concepts we discuss in class,” Robinson revealed. “The foraging exercise gets students to think about the challenges non-humans face when it comes to obtaining food. And, the lab itself is a lot of fun.”

Mount Media students produce Habitat video Five Mount Saint Mary College media studies students shot and edited a video detailing the impact of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh on the community. The eight-minute film, titled “The Ripple Effect,” debuted at the local organization’s annual breakfast. It features interviews with Cathy Collins, executive director of Newburgh Habitat; families who have benefited from the organization’s charitable work; and local business owners. “This is real-world experience and everyone was handson involved,” said associate communication arts professor Dean Goldberg, who oversaw the film’s production. The video was created by Mount Media, the student-staffed, full-service creative agency. “Our mission is to produce videos, promos, and shows that reflect our diverse community,” Goldberg explained. Student videographers were Michael Sanchez, Kristen Zehr, Danangelowe “A.J.” Spencer, Vincent Yodice, and Michael Priest. The video can be viewed at www.msmc.edu/HabitatVideo Goldberg often affords his students practical experiences. In this joint effort between Campus Ministry and Arts and Letters, tags hang like ornaments on the Giving Tree, and written on the back of each is a gift request from an underprivileged child. Mount community members donate the requested items, creating happy holiday memories. The Mount has provided more than 3,000 gifts for local families since 2011.
Students bring joy and music to nursing home residents With some old-fashioned Christmas caroling, the Mount’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and Aging United student clubs brought holiday cheer to the residents of Montgomery Nursing Home. About 60 students spanning both clubs and 20 BBBS “littles” sang carols. “Through Aging United, many of us have come to know how lonely the residents of nursing homes can feel sometimes,” said math major Anna Salvatore, president of Aging United and a member of BBBS. “Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference in someone’s day.” Nicole Bosi, president of BBBS and an IT major on the education track, echoed Salvatore’s sentiment. “This is our way as a club to give back to the community,” Bosi explained. “The ‘littles’ got to see that singing for a short time made many people’s day.”

tudents, faculty, and staff donated more than $1,000 worth of food to local families in need for Thanksgiving. The initiative, spearheaded by the college’s Campus Ministry, delivered the food to First United Methodist Church in Newburgh, N.Y. According to Roger May, Jr., assistant director of Campus Ministry, students donated about 100 food items and raised nearly $900 during Spirit of the Mount Week. Volunteers used the money to purchase boxed and canned goods. Mount chaplain Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm, was very pleased with the Mount’s commitment to aiding the less fortunate. “At Mount Saint Mary College, according to our mission, we are to educate the whole person,” he said. “When they graduate from the Mount, service will be a value which they would naturally share in their communities.”
Sending school supplies to local kids The offices of Alumni Affairs and Student Activities sponsored a Back to School Supply Drive for the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, serving the needs of the City of Newburgh and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Alumni Affairs director Michelle Iacuessa, along with nearly a dozen student volunteers, stuffed 50 book bags with pencils, erasers, spiral notebooks, binders, small pencil sharpeners, pens, crayon packs, glue sticks and more, before dropping them off at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. “We’re all so excited about this,” said human services major Gabriela Monroy. “We hope it helps a lot of families.”

The Honor Flight program touched down in the Hudson Valley in November, and Corcoran was paired with Navy veteran Louis “Wiso” Diaz. They joined about 60 veterans on the flight to visit memorials built in their honor, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Iwo Jima/United States Marine Corps War Memorial. Upon landing in D.C., the group was met with cheers and salutes from appreciative civilians and fellow veterans, Corcoran explained. “It was great to volunteer on this project,” said Corcoran. “This generation in the 21st century still knows what they did, appreciates what they did. Future generations will as well.” But what had the biggest impact on him, Corcoran said, was Diaz himself. “He’s very lively and he loves to dance,” Corcoran noted. “He told me really interesting stories of his time in the military and his life in general. He gave so much for the country, and veterans like [Diaz] are very humble – that’s one of the reasons they’re the Greatest Generation.” Service runs in the family: Corcoran is the son of associate nursing professor Ann Corcoran, who has accompanied Mount nursing students on four separate humanitarian trips to the Dominican Republic. www.msmc.edu

Healthy support Nursing Student Union collects blood, raises funds to fight cancer Students, staff, and members of the local community gave the gift of life to the tune of 180 donations at a recent Mount blood drive. Members of the college’s Nursing Student Union (NSU) were among those assisting at the event. In addition, NSU members earned $2,760 through a t-shirt sale to help combat ovarian and breast cancer. According to NSU president Victoria Goldbach, the group sold a total of 315 shirts and more than doubled the outcome from last year’s campaign. “I’m so happy to have surpassed the fundraising amount from last year,” said Goldbach. “With my mother and two of my aunts fighting this disease, it means so much to have our college community come together like this.” The money will be donated to the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Organization of the Hudson Valley, as well as the Corinne Feller Memorial Fund, which raises awareness of ovarian cancer. Feller was a student at Valley Central High School when she died of the disease in 1999. About 50 percent of Mount freshmen are preparing for careers in healthcare.

he Mount’s Department of Athletics, in conjunction with Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) and the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, hosted Newburgh Armory Unity Center Day this past October. Nearly 60 student athletes and coaches helped youth from the Newburgh area take part in a fun-filled event that included academic instruction, games, and physical activity. Mount students showed area youngsters how to use iPads and various applications, helped them through mind-stretching games, and demonstrated kitchen chemistry, dance, and fun K’Nex activities. Several men’s and women’s lacrosse players took part in a dance class that included a routine later used in a performance. “Participating in the Newburgh Armory Unity Center Day was a fun way for the community to get together and share in the sports and activities we love. The dance class led by the NFA Dance Team was a great opportunity to meet and spend time with kids in the Newburgh community,” said Mount senior Amanda Clemens, who is a member of the women’s lacrosse team. Professor Janine Bixler, chair of the Mount’s Division of Education, said she “loved witnessing the energy that the MSMC and NFA athletes brought to the Armory. Children loved engaging with them in their enrichment classes and learning from them in the sports clinics.” “Seeing the entire Newburgh community come together at the Armory was truly amazing,” said Victoria Goldbach, a senior nursing student on the softball team and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president. “The Mount was able to collaborate with NFA as well as other Armory volunteers to provide children of Newburgh with a fun and educational day.” Men’s basketball coach Ryan Kadlubowski and assistant women’s coach Ryan Probst joined NFA to lead basketball lessons, including game fundamentals, shooting drills, and ball-handling skills. “We were able to partner with NFA in having a clinic for the kids, teaching them a variety of sports while helping them understand the importance of academics first,” said Goldbach. “It was amazing that the Mount and NFA could work together to relay such a crucial message: it is important to have fun and play sports but you also can’t forget about school. Education is key to being successful both on and off the field.”

Knights “adopt” two local teens The men’s basketball squad welcomed 15-year old Paris Moore to the Mount through Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that couples collegiate athletic programs with children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses. During a doubleheader, Paris signed a Division III celebratory letter, making him a member of the Knights. He was introduced to the crowd and presented with a jersey, and appeared on the live stream of the game to talk about his experience. Paris will act as a team manager, supporting them during practice and cheering them on from the bench at home games. “We will help motivate each other to strive for excellence and to not take any moment, on or off the court, for granted. This will be an experience that both he and our players will cherish for a lifetime,” said head coach Ryan Kadlubowski. Head women’s lacrosse coach Julia Steese and her team, in conjunction with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, “adopted” 16-year-old Brielle Furci through the Foundation’s Adopt-AChild Program. The mission is to raise awareness and improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers. Mount Saint Mary College’s home game on April 2 will be played in honor of Brielle and the Friends of Jaclyn. “It’s an opportunity for the team to be part of something bigger and to help Brielle through her journey,” said Steese. www.msmc.edu

orking with members of Congress on Capitol Hill might sound like something in an episode of “The West Wing,” but for Mount graduate Karina Cabrera Bell ’01, it’s all in a day’s work. Bell serves as Congressional Director in The White House Presidential Personnel Office, working with members of Congress and their staff on matters related to the President’s political appointments. In addition, she and her team are responsible for recruiting and retaining thousands of appointments to help carry out the administration’s agenda. “I feel lucky to work at The White House,” Bell explained. “Everyone around me is exceptionally smart, hardworking, and passionate. And what makes this building and people so special is that everyone cares deeply about making this country better. We all care about public service and it is palpable when you speak to anyone here.” Though her job can be challenging, Bell says she enjoys it for several reasons, including “helping a talented candidate get a job, meeting so many amazing people, and serving this President and this country.” Bell first became interested in politics after finishing college and moving to San Francisco. She volunteered in her first campaign for a lieutenant governor, and also had an internship in San Francisco City Hall. “My internship was pivotal in leading me into a career in public service,” Bell revealed. “I quickly realized I enjoyed helping people, whether it was figuring out how to get their social security check, to ensuring children had access to health insurance.” Bell credits much of her success to

the support of Mount friends, professors, and the Office of Student Affairs, which provides support services and activities to the Mount community. “Each played such an important role in my development as a student and as a leader,” Bell noted. “But I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special shout out to Kelly Yough [now Dean of Student Affairs] for always being so supportive. Thank you.”

Bell’s advice to current Mount students is threefold: n Find what excites you and follow that pursuit. If you don’t know what you are passionate about, intern every summer with different industries. n Mentors are essential. n Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you. It does wonders for your peace of mind.

repurposing and reuse of space, and indoor environmental quality. The center was once home to the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, serving as their motherhouse from 1927 until 2011. It also housed and educated Mount Saint Mary Academy students until the high school closed in 1979. The building features the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary, an important part of Mount Saint Mary College’s heritage. The Dominican Center, including the five-story building and 13.1 acres of land, was purchased from the Dominican Sisters on July 13, 2011. ount Saint Mary College recently launched its Lighting the Way Scholarship Program to benefit graduates of Nora Cronin Presentation Academy and San Miguel Academy, two middle schools in Newburgh, N.Y. The Lighting the Way Scholarship will assist graduates of either academy from underserved backgrounds who wish to pursue a four-year college education at the Mount. Based on financial need, it will be awarded annually, with the possibility of renewal based on academic performance. The first scholarship will be awarded this year. The Mount launched the program in September 2015 at a reception at the home of Bishop Dominick J. Lagonegro, DD. Since then, the program has already received more than $300,000 in pledges, including major donations from Wallkill Valley Federal Savings and Loan; Nick Preddice of the Affinity Group LLC; James P. Smith Jr., president of Advance Testing Company, Inc.; and the late Dr. Frances P. Connor. “It is our hope that the friends and

neighbors of Mount Saint Mary College, who have been such generous supporters of the college over the years, will help us to expand this scholarship to benefit a greater number of students from our community,” said Joseph Valenti, vice president for college advancement at the Mount. The initiative is chaired by Anthony P. Costa, chairman and co-CEO of Empire State Bank. The Mount’s student population has always included a significant number of first-generation college students, currently 35 percent.

A Call to Excellence: The Campaign for the Dominican Center
July 2014 – June 2015
Honor Roll Of Donors
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of the Mount,
E
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
very year thousands of high school students read about Mount Saint Mary College and attend our Open Houses. Each of them asks themselves the question, “Why Mount Saint Mary College?”. It is indeed an important question that should be asked, not only by students choosing a college, but also, from time to time, by everyone doing their part to make certain that the Mount continues to serve promising students. For some, the answer is in the Mount’s outstanding academic programs and dedicated faculty. For others, it is our beautiful campus with well-maintained grounds and buildings that overlook the Hudson River. And, for a significant number of us, it is in the founding principles and traditions of the Dominican Sisters who created a college where people of all backgrounds and faiths are welcome and valued. I believe that we can see living examples of these principles and traditions in the generous individuals who are named in this year’s Honor Roll of Donors. At a time when families must make ever greater sacrifices to provide their children with the benefit of a quality education that will serve them well in their lives and careers, we find that the Mount’s generous and dedicated community of alumni, faculty, staff and friends are a fitting and persuasive response to the question “Why Mount Saint Mary College?” Because of the active support of our college community, deserving students will not be turned away

due to the cost of a Mount education being beyond their reach. Nor will they find that dreams such as pursuing a graduate degree, owning a home or perhaps starting a business have become impossibilities because they are burdened with an insurmountable debt. Because of our generous donors, our students will have a chance to go as far in life as their talent and hard work will take them. They will take the skills and values that were instilled in them at the Mount and put them to work in a world that is in serious need of principled, energetic and talented people. We are all truly grateful for all that you have made possible in the lives of our students who make us all proud and who will one day go on to follow your example by becoming the best possible answers that we can offer when someone asks “Why Mount Saint Mary College?” Yours in gratitude,
Joe Valenti Vice President for College Advancement

Career leads across the globe
A conversation with Elise McKenna ’81, RN, BSN, MPH, MSEd Elise McKenna ’81, RN, BSN, MPH, MSEd recently visited the Mount and shared with Joan Gambeski of College Advancement updates about her work and life. What paths have you followed during your career in nursing? While in grad school at Columbia, I had the opportunity to teach a course at the graduate level and realized how much I loved teaching. I lived overseas in the 1980s and 1990s in Korea and Germany, as my husband was an Army officer. I earned a Master of Science in education from the University of Southern California while working as a nurse at the U.S. Army hospital in Seoul. During my graduate work, I did an independent study with Seoul National University examining the developing country’s healthcare system, including both private and public hospitals: an experience that solidified my interest in public health, ethics and underserved populations. In Germany, I began teaching an undergraduate course to soldiers studying the healthcare system, and I was hooked. I was fortunate to be hired full-time at the University of Kansas as a visiting professor for a year while my husband was stationed at Fort Leavenworth. We then moved to Washington, D.C., where I taught at Georgetown University’s School of Nursing and Health Studies. While I think I taught almost every nursing class from sophomores to seniors, I was honored when asked to develop and teach two new core courses: Health Care Delivery System, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. During those 12 years of teaching, I also started consulting on a Robert Wood Johnson funded grant to advance the spread of palliative care programs in hospitals nationally. When did you launch your consulting practice? I started consulting (hdpdconsulting.com) when I moved to Vermont, about 10 years ago. I was able to

My mother, Elise Cuff McKenna, Sr., served in World War II as a registered nurse and will always be an inspiration to me. When I was in the seventh grade, my mother worked as the night supervisor at our local hospital. About the same time, my grandfather—who had dementia—moved in with our family. As the oldest girl of six, I spent a lot of time with him. I think the positive way our family cared for him, combined with my mom being a nurse and a role model, made me start to think seriously about nursing. Elise McKenna ’81 and her husband, Bob Bleimeister

secure small consulting projects initially with institutes at large universities, such as Duke, NYU School of Nursing, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine, which led to other annual contracts with the State of Vermont and NYU. What areas of nursing and public health are you working in today? The focus of my current work at the state level is all about improving primary care in rural Vermont. I continue to work with the NYU School of Nursing for an institute called NICHE, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders, which provides hospitals, long-term care facilities, and health systems with evidence-based practices in the care of older adults. Why did you choose nursing as your major in college? My family had a great influence on the choices I have made in my life.
Mount Saint Mary College Magazine | WINTER 2015-16
What do you value most about your Mount education? How did it prepare you for your future studies and career? When I think about my experience at the Mount, what stands out the most is the personal interest the faculty took in me and other students. They took the time to care, encourage and were genuinely interested in our lives. I was invited into the homes of many of my professors and administrators. The faculty, including the Dominican Sisters, often invited us for gatherings in their homes. I truly felt like I was a valued member of the Mount community. I had to work especially hard as a student, but I always believed I had the support of the faculty and that reinforced my resolve to get as much as I could out of my education. What suggestions do you have for today’s nursing students? In my own career I have received the most satisfaction from working with underserved populations. My suggestion would be that, whatever system you work in, keep your eyes on the vulnerable groups. Be mindful of the complexities of the journey; do work to make a better way. Elise McKenna lives in Stowe, Vermont with her husband and their 85-lb labradoodle, Zoey. They have two grown sons. Read more at msmc.edu/magazine

n July 1927 (left), the Dominican Center – known then as Greater Mount Saint Mary – was in the final phases of construction. A mere 12 weeks later in October 1927 (below) it was completed. The building served as the Motherhouse to the Dominican Sisters until 2011, when it was purchased by Mount Saint Mary College and transformed into a state-of-the-art living and learning space. The Dominican Center was recently recognized for interior design excellence in the American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase. See story on page 40.
