Letter from the President Dear Alumni, Students, Parents, and Friends of Mount Saint Mary College,
T
his summer, after a career that was spent mostly teaching economics at Vassar College, I was asked to try my hand at something new – serving as the Interim President of Mount Saint Mary College. Although I had lived and worked in Dutchess County for 40 years, this was my first real work assignment west of the Hudson. I grew up in England and finished my graduate work at Columbia University. After brief spells at Fordham and Queens David and Susan Kennett College, I arrived at Vassar initially on a one-year assignment. I must have liked the Hudson Valley because I am still here, and still loving it. My two children grew up here and though they are now each 3,000 miles away – one to the west in California and one to the east in London – my wife Susan and I continue to call it home. Although I had spent most of my life in universities and colleges, this was to be my first experience actually running one. I had headed up departments and programs, and I had served as a consultant to a wide range of governmental and international agencies, but this was to be the first time I had “met a payroll” and been responsible for integrating the lives, studies, and work of literally thousands of people. It is daunting, but after a brief moment I realized, and was very thankful for, the many assets that I had been provided. First, we have magnificent physical surroundings, a beautifully-located campus with excellent facilities that are tended wonderfully by caring and dedicated employees. Next I came to appreciate the superb and giving faculty that we have. They go so far out of their way to provide our students with a rigorous, but caring and personalized education that will be the foundation of successful careers and happy lives. Making sure everything runs smoothly is an excellent staff that looks after all aspects of college life. It took some time for Susan and I to get “off campus” and get out to know people in the City of Newburgh and in the community of Orange County. In time we got to meet alumni from all across the United States. It was then that I fully understood how dependent the college is on a broadly drawn group of friends who give freely of their time and other resources, to ensure that future generations of students will enjoy an education as good or better than we have given in the past.

This is my chance to say my first thank you to that group for all that they have given to us in the past – and to thank you for all that you will do in the future. This is a great college. It has helped many of you build a strong foundation for your careers, and more importantly, for your lives. One characteristic that has repeatedly impressed me in the months that I have been here is the sense of service that the Mount brings out in its students. That is something to be treasured. It is a great gift that has come from our founders, the Sisters, and with your help, it will be a treasured attribute for years to come. Thanks again. Sincerely,
Dr. David A. Kennett

ducators from New York and beyond packed Mount Saint Mary College’s Hudson Hall auditorium for “Teachers as Leaders: Reclaiming Our Schools,” the seventh annual conference of the college’s Center for Adolescent Research and Development (CARD). Under the direction of Mount alumna Dana McDonough ’91, MSEd ’00, the 2016 New York State Teacher of the Year; Debra Calvino ’81, the 2010 New York State Teacher of the Year; and Peggy Stewart, the 2005 New Jersey Teacher of the Year, educators learned how they can strengthen their schools through teacher leadership. “Although not new, teacher leadership is now prominently discussed and growing as an answer to reforms that need to be in place for 21st century schools,” said McDonough. This conference and workshop combined research, tools, and interactive practices to build one’s capacity to lead through four components: teacher leadership coaching; applying Adult Learning Theory; facilitating effective teams; and designing and implementing change. CARD is co-directed by professors Frances Spielhagen, education, and Paul Schwartz, psychology. The center fosters research initiatives related to contemporary adolescents and young adults. The conference was co-sponsored by the Mount, the Mid-Hudson School Study Council, Orange-Ulster BOCES, and the National/State Teachers of the Year.

Family Literacy Night at Bishop Dunn
The young students of Bishop Dunn Memorial School embraced the power of the written word recently at Family Literacy Night, hosted by Mount Saint Mary College teacher candidates. About a dozen Mount graduate education students presented a variety of interactive literacy stations. “The big emphasis for this program is engaging both the students and the parents in literacy,” said Mario Mercado, a Mount graduate education student. “We want to send them home with something tangible that they worked on together. And hopefully, they’ll want to spend more time on literacy at home, too.” In addition, 15 Mount undergraduate students from a tutoring skills course at the college presented strategies to help the Bishop Dunn students become better writers. Mount professors Sonya Abbye Taylor and Marie-Therese Sulit spearheaded the event. They thanked Ronald DePace, Bishop Dunn principal; Nancy Benfer ’04, assistant principal; and Daniel Shea, professor of English at the Mount and chair of the Division of Arts and Letters, for their aid in making the event a success.
New 5-year grant to help prepare underrepresented teacher candidates Mount Saint Mary College has officially been named a Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) higher education institution, and the college’s Teach the Change initiative has been awarded a five-year New York State TOC grant. Teach the Change is a comprehensive initiative of the college’s Division of Education, coordinated in conjunction with the Center for Adolescent Research and Development (CARD), under the leadership of Frances Spielhagen, Mount professor of education. Over the next five years, the Mount’s Teach the Change initiative will receive funding of $39,000 per year to recruit, nurture, and mentor minority and/or economically disadvantaged candidates and prepare them to teach in at-risk school districts in New York State. The college will match 15 percent of this amount, using a $10,000 TD Charitable Trust grant that was awarded earlier this year. Teach the Change will seek additional funding to support the grant as time goes on. With TOC support, the college will sponsor six students each year who will be official TOC candidates. Out of the 100 schools of education in the state, approximately ten colleges have been designated TOC schools.
he New York State Education Department recently approved Mount Saint Mary College’s proposed 5-year BA/MSEd degrees in history and math. The bachelor’s in mathematics/ master’s in adolescence education and bachelor’s in history/ master’s in adolescence education programs are available either with or without dual certification in special education. The programs were developed by the Mount’s School of Education, in conjunction with the Division of Mathematics and Information Technology and the Division of Social Sciences.

’
Teachers in New York are required to earn a master’s degree within five years of their initial certification, so the programs will help students complete their training in a shorter period of time, noted Monica Merritt, associate professor of education at the Mount. She added, “Another benefit of having a 5-year option for each adolescence education concentration is that teacher candidates will be able to go through the education portion of the program as a cohort [group],” allowing students the opportunity to forge lasting academic bonds with their classmates. With the approval of mathematics and history, every discipline in the Mount’s adolescence education program now has a 5-year option. Other 5-year BA/ MSEd options include English, biology, and chemistry. www.msmc.edu

Stephen Cheskiewicz leads the new technology advisory board.
Information Technology Advisory Board formed Mount Saint Mary College’s Information Technology Advisory Board, comprised of local leaders in the field, was recently formed with the aim of keeping the college’s IT program timely, emergent, and in line with the needs of employers in the region. In his research “Megabit Learning in a Gigabit World,” Stephen Cheskiewicz, assistant professor of information technology, identified ways to increase retention in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academic programs. According to Cheskiewicz, students in STEM programs expect course content that is emergent and that allows them to be participatory learners. Assembled by Cheskiewicz for this purpose and more, the Information Technology Advisory Board examined the college’s current technology program and generated suggestions for new educational opportunities. Also discussed were possible new academic concentrations for the information technology program, expanded internship opportunities, and ways for students to apply their technology skills to real world projects. The board meets monthly to help facilitate suggestions to better align the Mount’s information technology program with current trends in the discipline and the occupations connected to local employers. The advisory board consists of technology leaders from HealthQuest, IBM, Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center, The Masiero Technology Group, Hudson Valley Technology Development Center, the Newburgh City School District, NY Public Radio NYC, A.J. Ross Creative Media, and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.

ount Saint Mary College’s theatre group recently presented “The Laramie Project,” a powerful drama directed by James Phillips, associate professor of theatre. “The Laramie Project” chronicles the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student who was murdered in Laramie, Wyo. in 1998. The case sparked a national discussion on hate crimes and eventually led to the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. Written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, “The Laramie Project” examines the aftermath of the killing through the eyes of Laramie residents. The play is based on interviews conducted about one month after Shepard’s death. “I look at the play as how a community heals after trauma,” Phillips explained. “It’s about how we get past things that divide us and scare us, the evils we’re capable of, and how we accept these things and move on.” The 11-member cast and crew was approximately half the size of the college’s Spring 2016 production, “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” creating an intimate connection between the actors and the audience. Though most of the performers were Mount theatre veterans, some were firsttimers or returning actors with larger parts than in previous productions. They surpassed Phillips’s expectations, he noted: “It’s a good mix,” he said. “They’ve really come together to form something worth being proud of.” Phillips said directing is one of his greatest joys as a Mount professor. “Starting from an idea and figuring out how to make something that will hopefully touch the audience in some way is a joy,” said Phillips. “Working with students in this way, for hours and hours a week, is an intensity you just can’t get in a classroom.” www.msmc.edu

The Division of Arts and Letters recently hosted talks focusing on two of the more concise outlets of literature: poetry and short stories. Covering topics ranging from family and friends to nature and the circle of life, James Finn Cotter, the longest serving professor at the Mount, revealed “Why I Write Poetry.” In addition to reading passages from his book, “A New Life: Learning the Way of Omega,” Cotter noted that his experience as a writer has enhanced his personal and professional life. Writing poetry naturally enhances awareness of the senses, of other people, and of ourselves, said the English professor and author. In a second talk, Jessica Gerson, a retired professor of English from Dutchess Community College, posed this question: “Why is a Short Story Short?” She delved into the purpose and general structure of the short story format, culminating in a reading and dissection of the classic vignette “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield.

Journey to France explores the Mount’s Dominican heritage
I
n celebration of the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order, students and staff from Mount Saint Mary College made a three week pilgrimage in the footsteps of the 13th century saint, Dominic de Guzman. Following Dominic’s missionary trail were students Amanda Bocekci and Veronica Malloy; Antonio Mansilla of the college’s facilities team; and Norma Pettus of the college’s security office. The group joined others from the Mount’s 18 sister Dominican colleges of the U.S. and Puerto Rico for study and travel to Fanjeaux, France, birthplace of Saint Dominic’s Order of Preachers. In Fanjeaux, the group focused on where Dominic’s movement began. They visited the home where Dominic briefly lived while he debated the Albigensian Cathars – a sect of his time that disagreed with his faith – as well as the nearby basilica and monastery of Sainte Marie de Prouilhe, where Dominic established his first community of nuns in 1206. For Mansilla, St. Dominic set an example in scholarship and faith that can be applied to everyday life. “I learned we’re always going to deal with challenges, hurdles, hectic days, not feeling well, and more; however, in those situations, I just stop and think about [St. Dominic’s] legacy,” he explained. “His charisma has clearly impacted me. I try to do my best to integrate it on a daily basis at home, work – around everyone.” Much of the Fanjeaux pilgrimage was sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Hope in Ossining, N.Y.

Dougie Cash ’10, who works as a Creative Executive at the Smith family’s production company Overbrook Entertainment in Los Angeles, reached out to the Foundation on the Mount’s behalf. WJSFF president Jana Babatunde-Bey, impressed with the scope and outcomes of the HEOP program, appreciates the importance of the community engagement work undertaken by Mount students to help underserved minority youth in Newburgh – an appreciation that led to the creation of the grant. “Our mission with the WJSFF is to use our resources to help empower up-and-coming youth who are doing extraordinary work in both their schooling and communities, while servicing their visions to reach their maximum potential,” said Babatunde-Bey. Media student Danangelowe “A.J.” Spencer, a recipient of the WJSFF scholarship, recently connected with VIPs in the showbiz industry during the Careers in Entertainment Tour in Brooklyn thanks to a nomination by Cash. Hosted by the WJSFF in partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the U.S. Small Business Administration, the event was designed to provide exceptional students from underserved communities the opportunity to engage directly with entertainment industry leaders, film studios, television networks, and educational partners. In addition to meeting with actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, Spencer made connections with professionals from Spotify, Roc Nation, and Marvel Entertainment. An info session at the event shed some light on entertainment industry career paths such as public relations, cinematography, acting, graphic arts, and more. “It made the entertainment industry tangible,” explained Spencer. “These aren’t just people you see on TV or names in the credits. They’re people with the same background as me, and they know the industry is not easy to get into…It made my dream more realistic.” After graduating from the Mount, Spencer hopes to found his own film and music production company. www.msmc.edu

Spirit of the Mount Week
Seniors snag victory at 2016 Mount Olympics
A
fter a competition that included performances, relays, a tug of war, and more, the senior class claimed victory at Mount Olympics in October. As part of the college’s annual Spirit of the Mount Week, students compete against each other to take home the Mount Olympics trophy – and the bragging rights that go along with it. More than 750 students attended the event. But Spirit of the Mount Week is about more than just friendly competition. Through a “coin war,” Mount students raised hundreds of dollars for the college’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. The money was used to aid underprivileged families living in Newburgh through the city’s Loaves and Fishes program. Spirit of the Mount Week wrapped up with the college’s 21st annual bonfire, which included a performance by the college’s dance team. Also during Spirit Week, students attended a kickoff Mass celebrated by campus chaplain Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm., enjoyed a powder puff football game, and more. Dr. David A. Kennett, Mount Saint Mary College’s interim president, began his two-year term in August. He joins the Mount from Vassar College, where he has worked since 1976, and most recently served as the Elizabeth Stillman Williams Professor of Economics.
Q&A
WITH INTERIM PRESIDENT KENNETT With your background as a professor of economics, what is the best trait that you bring to the Mount? Some textbooks describe economics as the “science of choice.” That is a bit grand, but what economists do share is a solid understanding of opportunity costs: Pursuing one course of action means that you have to, often regretfully, leave something undone. That’s what I bring as an economist, but I think I have other characteristics that come from my background and history that will serve me well. First of all, I was educated very much in the liberal arts tradition, and the Mount, as well as providing exemplary pre-professional programs, is very much a liberal arts school. Second, I like variety, and one aspect of this job is one never knows what is coming next. Third, I am a quick learner, and in this job, that really helps. What do you see as the Mount’s greatest strength? Without a doubt, it’s the people. The students are great. They study hard and they are ambitious, but they never lose sight of those who are less fortunate than themselves. More than 80 percent of our students serve the community in one way or another. The faculty are very dedicated in the classroom and in their own research despite a very demanding teaching load. Our staff as well – anyone who comes to this campus can see the pride with which the people who work here operate. And finally, our alumni. Everywhere I go, I meet them and I am really strengthened by the appreciation they have for the education that they have received.
How can the college make the Newburgh community better? One thing that has been impressed on me since I have arrived is the mutual relationship between the college and the city, and beyond that, the county. Community support strengthens the college, and the college in turn can do much to change the community. Since we have gotten here, both my wife Susan and I have been lifted by the optimism and commitment to change that we feel in the community. Orange County is one of the most rapidly growing areas of the state. That resurgence can only make the Mount stronger and, in turn, of even more value to the area. As president, what is your top priority? My top priority is to continue the college’s financial stability – all other good things have to stem from that. I look around this area and I see the tremendous good that this college has done. I see the high esteem that the community has for the Mount and the respect that so many people have for our graduates. For this to continue and to thrive for other generations, financial stability must come first. What do you want to see in the college’s future? Financial stability and modest growth will build a platform for the college that will give us the ability to offer new courses of study to help students in their life and career choices. Our continued role in the community will help us to serve the educational goals of the people and improve the lives of the citizens. I am sure we can count on these things happening with the support of our friends.

M
ount Saint Mary College has acquired the full sevenvolume Heritage Edition set of the Saint John’s Bible, the first handwritten and illuminated Bible produced in more than 500 years. Using medieval inks, materials, and methods, a team of artists and calligraphers worked for 15 years to create the seven volumes that comprise the Saint John’s Bible. Commissioned by the Benedictine monks of St. John’s Abbey, it was created using quill pens and special inks comprised of condensed candle smoke and egg whites. The Heritage Edition, a fine art reproduction of the original Saint John’s Bible, was limited to 299 copies. The college now owns the first two volumes – Psalms and Letters & Revelation – of copy number 133. They are currently on display in the Marble Hall outside the chapel in the Dominican Center. The Mount will receive the remaining volumes in installments over the course of the next two years. “We are extremely fortunate to

have the Saint John’s Bible, an artistic masterpiece, as a campus resource,” said Dr. David A. Kennett, president of the Mount. “It can enrich academic programs across the curriculum and offer exceptional opportunities for programming in student life and with community partners.” The Mount community first fell in love with the Saint John’s Bible in the 2015-16 academic year upon borrowing and displaying two volumes of the Heritage Edition. During that time, the college hosted more than 50 events and activities related to the Bible, including a dozen classroom presentations and public events on campus. Mount faculty and staff also shared the Heritage Edition volumes with the surrounding community in Orange, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. In total, more than 1,200 people had a chance to experience the Saint John’s Bible through these efforts. The Mount community marked the closing of the 800th Dominican Jubilee Year by blessing the college’s newly acquired volumes of the Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition in December. The two volumes were blessed by Rabbi Philip Weintraub of Congregation Agudas Israel in Newburgh, N.Y. and Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm., campus chaplain and director of Campus Ministry. “I pray that these texts here will inspire us all to do beautiful and righteous acts,” said Rabbi Weintraub. “We know that when we stand together, as Christians, as Jews, and as Muslims, we ensure its blessing.”

rom bankers to healthcare gurus, the inaugural semester of the Mount’s Real World Connections (RWC) series found students making meaningful connections with professionals in healthcare, sports, journalism, business, and more. Hosted by the college’s Career Center, the RWC series unites seniors of all majors with professionals in a variety of fields, including high profile recruiters and successful alumni like Brittany King ’11, an editor at People Magazine; Gina Walsh ’02, vice president of operations with Morgan Stanley; Alyssa Watkins ’13 of KC Engineering; and Thomas Kennedy ’91, partner at PKF O’Connor Davies, LLP. The reception-like gatherings – four per semester – provide a low pressure environment for students to mingle with the professionals. “The programs give our senior students an opportunity to meet representatives of organizations in an informal setting,” explained Janet Zeman, executive director of the Mount’s Career Center. “They enable our students to develop their network of contacts that will be useful for them when

they begin their job search for permanent, post-graduate positions.” The RWC series replaced the Mount’s annual career fair, and has already surpassed its attendance. “Revamping the idea and going with something more intimate has proven to be more beneficial to our students,” explained Kathleen O’Keefe, associate director of the Career Center. “We’re changing the campus culture.” The focus on professional fields instead of majors helps all seniors walk away with valuable insight, O’Keefe said, regardless of major. “The events can help broaden a student’s perception of what he or she can do with their education,” she said. One such example is alumna Tara Doughty ’06, director of program management at Hospicom, Inc., a medical education company. Doughty majored in public relations and business administration. “What’s important is to have a strong skillset in communications, strong writing skills, and an outgoing personality,” said Doughty. “Never be closed to an opportunity you didn’t plan. Don’t be scared to take a risk.” With graduation approaching, seniors must set themselves apart, said Chris DePalma, New York Yankees inside sales associate. “Be aggressive and show people that you’re valuable,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to call someone and ask for five minutes of their time.” Barry Lewis, the executive editor of the Times Herald-Record, said there are good opportunities in journalism thanks to internet distribution of content. His advice to students looking to break into the field was simple: place work experience at the top of your résumé, instead of GPA or degrees earned. “I want to know if you can write a story,” Lewis said. Though each of the professionals came from a different background, there was a common thread to their success, noted John Chiaia of Brooklyn, N.Y., a journalism and public relations major: “They didn’t graduate and then suddenly have their dream job,” he said. “Getting to where you want to be requires patience and drive.”

Emergency response Exercise prepares Mount security, local first responders for crisis situation
M
ount Saint Mary College’s yearly emergency preparedness exercise brought together campus security, the City of Newburgh Police Department, Mobile Life Support Services, Inc., and other local agencies to train for an active shooter situation. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the college to further develop its existing emergency planning, and to enable local emergency responders to test interagency programs for handling large incidents, including severe storms, power outages, and more. The simulation involved a single shooter injuring 14 and placing small explosive devices on campus before being neutralized by City of Newburgh Police. The actors playing victims were evacuated from the building and, had it been a real emergency, they would have been brought to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital by Mobile

Life Support Service, Inc. “The possibility of an active shooter event on campus is very rare, but we have to be prepared nonetheless,” explained Matthew Byrne, director of Security and Safety at Mount Saint Mary College. “We saw today that our communication level passed the test.” The exercise was carried out after months of preparation, said Byrne, including reviewing college policies and procedures, and hosting active shooter preparedness training for Mount faculty and staff through a partnership with the City of Newburgh Police Department. The officers were not briefed on the scenario beforehand and used their training and tactics to come to a resolution as quickly as possible. “Real-life training scenarios are the best kind of training there is. That is where we learn the most,” said Dan Cameron, City of Newburgh police

chief. “I am very pleased with the response from all of the people involved in this process.” More than 60 people participated in the exercise, including representatives from Orange County Emergency Management, SUNY Orange, Newburgh City Enlarged School District, the New York State Office for Fire Prevention and Control, the City of Newburgh Fire Department, and Hudson Valley Boy Scouts. “From police to fire to EMS, to the role-players involved, to the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, I give my heartfelt thanks for your assistance in allowing us to test ourselves and our preparedness level,” Byrne said. The Mount completes an emergency preparedness exercise every year. Past scenarios have included food poisoning, hostage situations, and severe weather scenarios.

hile his classmates tackled internships and summer jobs, information technology major Steven Fejes found himself nearly 7,000 miles away, immersed in the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun. Fejes worked with Ashley Knox, director of International Programs, on planning and applying for the opportunity, which was offered by the Council on International Educational Exchange. “I wanted to go someplace really different and I wanted to experience a lot of great new things,” he said. “I’ve always been interested in Japan since I was younger.” What began as a childhood love of Japanese video games like Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. blossomed into one of the best hands-on learning experiences of his life, Fejes explained. For a month between July and August, Fejes, the captain of the Knights swim team, joined 100 other international students at Sophia University, a private Jesuit research institution in Tokyo.
One of Fejes’ photos of Tokyo.
He took two accelerated courses: Japanese and art history. Learning to speak Japanese was the tougher of the two courses, he admitted. “They crammed a whole course into a month and it was a little difficult to learn. But after a while, it got a little easier,” said Fejes. Japanese cuisine, on the other hand, wasn’t as difficult to get used to
– aside from American-style spaghetti and meatballs served at breakfast. Fejes particularly enjoyed udon, a type of thick wheat noodle that can be served in a hot soup or chilled and eaten with dipping sauces. Outside the classroom, Fejes was impressed by Tokyo’s high-tech infrastructure, from trains and architecture to specialized vending machines on every street corner. “Almost every aspect of the day was different from America,” he explained. “There were young kids riding the trains by themselves who knew the system better than I did. It was culture shock in the best kind of way.” Fejes notes that one of the biggest benefits of the venture wasn’t academic, but in his attitude. “Before going, I was a more introverted person,” said Fejes. “But in Japan, I met new people every day and was part of a large group [of students]. Even now, I’m more comfortable talking to people.” He added, “Japan is a hard-working culture. It’s pretty demanding. I feel more organized now.” www.msmc.edu

T
he Mount’s Sigma Tau chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), the International Honor Society in Education, recently kicked off an afterschool literacy program for underprivileged children living in Newburgh. The initiative is a collaborative venture between Mount Saint Mary College and the Newburgh Ministry charitable organization, which is headed by director Colin Jarvis. Developed by Mount teacher candidates over the summer interim, “Exploring World of Words” is overseen by nearly a dozen Mount volunteers. The program is geared towards at-risk elementary through middle school students. KDP chapter president Veronica Malloy and vice president Emily Meehan spearheaded the program. “I think it’s awesome that we get to nurture literacy in the kids like this,” said Malloy. “This is also really great practice [for teacher candidates].” Mount education professors Sonya Abbye Taylor and Ludmila Smirnova,

co-counselors of the KDP chapter, assisted the teacher candidates in designing the program. “We want to instill the desire to learn,” explained Smirnova. “Also we want to develop leadership skills and connect with parents. Another major goal is to get the children interested in a college education.” Taylor says that the program is beneficial for not only the young students, but also for the Mount teacher candidates. “This will help our students to be more effective communicators,” she said. “And this is something where they generate the curriculum and dictate exactly how they teach it, just like they will one day in their own classrooms.” In December, the program was awarded a $15,000 technology grant from Warwick Savings Foundation. The funding will be used to purchase tablets, laptops, software programs, and other digital equipment to be used for educating the young students and their parents.

Dyson, Leadership scholars serve their community Nearly a dozen Dyson and Leadership Scholars lent their aid to this year’s Freshman Fall Service project, which took place at the Hudson Valley Food Bank in Cornwall, N.Y. Just before Thanksgiving, the freshmen prepared, sorted, and boxed food donations for distribution to organizations throughout New York. Dyson and Leadership Scholars also attended the National Student Leadership Diversity Convention and shared what they learned with the Mount community in a presentation titled “Leadstrong: Being a Culturally Aware Leader.”
Students hungry to serve Food drive at the Mount yields hefty haul
M
ount Saint Mary College students donated more than $750 worth of food in November, helping to feed local people in need this Thanksgiving. The initiative, spearheaded by the college’s Campus Ministry, delivered the food to Newburgh’s Loaves and Fishes program for distribution to local families. Mount chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, Fr. Francis Amodio, O.Carm., was very pleased with the Mount’s commitment to aiding the less fortunate. “By doing works of mercy…we’re fulfilling the command of God to love your neighbor,” explained Fr. Amodio. “It’s important that our students learn the value of service to our community.” In addition, the college’s Delta Leadership Society student service club also hosted a food drive, yielding additional
donations. The Mount’s spirit of giving didn’t end there. The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) student club hosted a familystyle Thanksgiving meal for more than a dozen at-risk youths. The successful event provided a positive, nurturing atmosphere to help the “bigs” encourage and empower each of the “littles.” “This is always a great meet-up because we get the chance to give thanks together as a club,” said BBBS president Rose Linehan. “Many ‘littles’ kept saying how the club is a second family to them.” Also in November, the college’s Aging United student club brought some Thanksgiving cheer to the residents of Montgomery Nursing Home during a visit. Aging United explores opportunities in service, programming, and research in the field of aging and hosts several events throughout the semester.
NSU honored for blood drive successes The college’s Nursing Student Union (NSU) was recently recognized by the New York Blood Center for their frequent blood drive efforts. At a luncheon and awards ceremony hosted by the New York Blood Center, Christopher Kelly, president of the Mount’s Nursing Student Union, and Kasondra Colasanti, vice president, accepted the award on the union’s behalf. “The blood drive has been a staple in the Nursing Student Union and it was an honor to go to the event together this year,” said Kelly. “Blood is one of the things that people take for granted. We never know the situations we will be put into… As a nursing student, we are introduced to tons of scenarios where a person may be in dire need of a transfusion.” The Mount’s most recent blood drive, held in October, found students, staff, and members of the local community giving the gift of life to the tune of 173 pints. als from the New York Blood Center, members of the college’s NSU were among those assisting at the event. “Through the years, the Nursing Student Union has done a fantastic job of passing the torch to the upcoming year and maintaining success in the blood drive,” noted Kelly. “Everyone, from years past and present, has been such an asset to the club and the blood drive event.”
The Mount’s Big Brothers Big Sisters student club held a Thanksgiving meal for Newburgh youth.

Students distribute food, clothing during ‘Midnight Run’ in NYC More than a dozen Mount students recently headed to New York City to help the homeless. Joined by Roger May, Jr., assistant director of Campus Ministry at the Mount, the students volunteered at the “Midnight Run” event, which distributed food and clothing to those in need in Manhattan. They made stops at Broadway, 34th Street, 8th Avenue, and more. Parkhurst, the Mount’s food service provider, donated enough to feed 150 people. Students prepared another 150 lunch bags packed with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, bottled water, chips, and an encouraging note for the bag’s recipient. The Mount community also gathered 12 bags of clothing to contribute to the effort. www.msmc.edu

Thomas Di Leo was named a team captain during the 2008-09 campaign and set two records: the 200-yard butterfly record as a freshman on his way to being named the league’s Rookie of the Year and the 1,650yard freestyle record as a sophomore (17:57.93 that still stands). He was the individual champion in the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle conference championship events in his senior year and was named Skyline Co-Swimmer of the Year. Knights donate supplies to displaced students
A
September cross country invitational at Purchase College took on extra meaning after roughly two dozen Purchase students were displaced by a dormitory fire. Mount graduate and MBA student Amanda Pecorella, a student athlete, learned of the fire through a high school friend who was affected. “I read that the school needed supplies donated,” said Pecorella. “I figured, with it being the start of the semester, you usually tend to bring a bunch of extra stuff when you move into your dorm.” Pecorella successfully organized a donation drive, and the MSMC Knights were able to bring dozens of items to the displaced students. “There are a lot of negative things going on in our world today; for one of our conference’s student-athletes to initiate this on her own without any prompting from a coach or administrator makes you feel good,” said Chris Bisignano, the athletic director at Purchase College. “It makes you realize that there are still people with their eye on the ball and doing the right thing.”
SAAC participates in Bonnie Boxes project As part of the Knights in the Community initiative, the Mount Saint Mary College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has teamed up with St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital to support the Newburgh Chapter of Bonnie Boxes, an organization that provides care packages for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Each of the Mount’s athletic program’s collected donations and separated the items to be placed into boxes. Mount Saint Mary College was the first college to complete a donation drive for Bonnie Boxes, which has grown to 23 chapters in nine states. Visit bonnieboxes.com for more information.

C
urtis Britt Turner ’89 was recently inducted into the Mount Saint Mary College Athletics Hall of Fame for his stellar basketball skills, but he’s an even bigger star off the court thanks to his devotion to the community. Turner currently runs Kingdom Cares Inc., a not-for-profit that provides after school and summer camp programs consisting of academic instruction, recreational activities, college tours, test prep, and a sleepaway camp. It’s a fitting career for Turner, whose service at the Mount included several leadership roles outside of athletics. He was the president of the Black Student Union and the Resident Living Council, served as the Resident Assistant during the HEOP Summer Orientation Program, and was a member of the College Ambassador Club, among other activities. As a thank you, the college hosted “Curtis Britt Day,” which honored Turner’s accomplishments. After graduating from the Mount,

Turner earned an MBA in marketing and a master’s in leadership from Binghamton University. Leadership and success, notes Turner, require hard work. “The biggest challenges have been balancing a marriage of 17 years with operating a business, as well as overcoming the tough periods that businesses experience,” explained Turner. “My wife stands in full support of me and has been instrumental in getting me through those difficult moments. Our faith in God has been the glue that has held everything together.” Turner credits his Mount basketball

coach, Joe McGuinness, with being a driving force behind his success throughout his college years. “He taught me basketball principles that were applicable to everyday life and instilled in me a determination that cannot be extinguished,” Turner said, adding, “Dean Harry Steinway also played a role in my life as he provided emotional support in all that I did. His presence was of a fatherly nature and unbeknownst to him, it kept me grounded and mature.” Another of his mentors is his uncle, James Stokes, who aided him during a difficult time in Turner’s high school years. “Mentors have a way of also being angels in one’s life,” Turner noted. Turner’s advice for current Mount students is simple but important. “Find your motivation for life,” he said. “Students need to identify with something that will drive them to their goals and serve as a constant reminder to never give up when those tough times appear in their lives.”

Daniel Maughan ’02, MSN, MBA, RN, FNP-C
Margaret Deyo Allers ’03, ’07G, MSN, BSN, RN, ANP
Maughan has three decades of clinical and leadership experience in the healthcare industry. He began his career as a nursing assistant and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing and a master’s degree in business administration from the Mount. Maughan is a nationally-certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and his experiences have included staff ED RN in the Detroit Medical Center level one trauma center, hospitalist nurse practitioner, assistant vice president of ED, trauma, surgical, and cancer services, and vice president of patient care operations. As vice president of transformation, Maughan is helping St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital shift to a new healthcare paradigm. He also oversees the Emergency Departments and Trauma program. Maughan shared that receiving all three of his degrees (BN, MBA, MSN) at the Mount was important: “(The Mount) helped me achieve my goals because they had the programs, people, and class sizes for the type of learner that I am. I never contemplated another school for each degree I obtained.”
Allers began her career in 1985 as a bedside nurse at The Cornwall Hospital and, over the next several years, advanced to the charge nurse of a very busy medical surgical unit. During this timeframe she received a BN from the Mount and soon became clinical nurse manager of both medical surgical units. Allers’ commitment to lifelong learning was further demonstrated by obtaining her MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the Mount. After Cornwall Hospital and St. Luke’s merged, Allers developed the Cardiac Catheterization program at SLCH and took on the role of clinical nurse manager of the Catheterization Lab. In 2009, Allers became the director of clinical practice, and then was promoted to assistant vice president of clinical practice, care coordination and service line development in 2014. Through her success, Allers saw the benefit that her Mount education afforded her: “I believe my success in obtaining this position could not have been accomplished without the support and growth opportunities afforded me through MSMC’s BSN and MSN programs ... and for that I am both grateful and honored that my educational aspirations pointed me towards MSMC.”

Mount Saint Mary College
A Call to Excellence: The Campaign for the Dominican Center
July 2015 – June 2016
Honor Roll Of Donors
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Mount,
W
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
ith each gathering of Mount Saint Mary College alumni that I attend, I find myself forming a better understanding of the role that this college has played in the lives of thousands of men and women for more than half a century. Yes, it is where they received an education and earned credentials that would lead them to successful and rewarding careers. But, as important as that is, that was not all that our graduates experienced during their time here as Mount students. From the stories that so many graduates of all ages have shared with me, it is clear that this college community has succeeded in transforming lives and has started thousands of young minds on a life of continual growth. What our alumni, faculty, and friends have taught me is that the Mount’s motto, “Doce Me Veritatum” (Teach me the Truth), is possibly the most concise and accurate mission statement that our founders could have given to us. When put into practice, it is more than just a summation of the role of an institution. It is a mandate for well-prepared graduates to begin their own journey toward an ultimate truth. Through the example of the Dominican Sisters, those graduates also learned that such a journey cannot be taken alone. The burdens and challenges of such a journey must be shared if we are to arrive at a truth that belongs to all of us. Every donor and supporter of Mount Saint Mary College has shown extraordinary generosity in helping us move forward on that journey. Because of you, our promising students will be able to pursue their dreams and do their part to serve a world that is in serious need of their talent, energy, and desire to seek truth. We are indeed grateful for all that you have made possible at the Mount and in the lives of our students.

Looking back
I
n 1966, the TV series Star Trek debuted, Walt Disney died, Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California, and Mount Saint Mary College graduated its third class. The Class of ’66 witnessed many changes during its four-year career at the Mount: the opening of Aquinas Hall in their freshman year; the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and the opening of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge (as well as the first Mount basketball win) in their sophomore year; the opening of the Garden Apartments and the introduction of the Student Government Association by junior year; and the college’s first student theatre production, The Miracle Worker, in their senior year. In September, members of the Class of 1966 reunited at the 50th anniversary dinner held in their honor during Alumni and Family Weekend.
