AENG 352 - Architectural Design Studio II Course description: Studio on form, space and composition. “Outside-in approach to architecture. The architectural form and its composition. The compositional aspects of spatial design- expression, language, intent, dynamics etc. and their use as tools of concept and functional accommodation. Three-dimensional models and design development. Spatial approach to design. Meaning, message and symbolism. Work with architectural precedents through analysis of various works of architects. Contemporary design theory as a premise for design.

Course Outcomes: • Developed an extensive research on Diller Scofidio & Renfro (DSR) architecture firm as part of generating a critical understanding of their architectural work. • Designed a mock-up of a residential building reflecting the spirit of DSR’s architecture. • Designed a mock-up of an Egyptian Pavilion for the World Exposition in 2010. • Media used: AutoCAD Architecture, Adobe Photoshop, handmade models.

Project: A residential building reflecting the spirit of DSR’s architecture Research Biography:  

 

Elizabeth Diller was born in Lodz, Poland in 1954. She received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Cooper Union School of Arts in 1979. She is a founding member of the DS+R studio and a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. Ricardo Scofidio was born in New York in 1935. He graduated from the Cooper Union School of Architecture and Columbia University. He is currently a Professor of Architecture in Columbia University. Charles Renfro was born in Houston, Texas in 1964. He graduated from Rice University and Columbia University where he taught for three years. DS+R was founded in 1979 by Diller and Scofidio. Renfro joined them in 2004. DS+R is a design studio consisting of 60 employees located in New York City. They designed many kinds of projects: residential, cultural, landscape, performance, commercial, art, landscape and media. DS+R won an Architecture Honor Award from the Society for College and University Planning for The Juilliard School, the AIA New York Honor Award for Urban Design for the High Line project, they were ranked #1 among Fast Company’s most innovative design firms, the AIA Honor Award for Architecture for Alice Tully Hall, the 2010 Progressive Architecture Award for the Museum of Image & Sound on Copacabana beach, they also received the AIA New York Medal of Honor and the AIA New York President’s Award. Elizabeth Diller & Ricardo Scofidio were chosen among The Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2009.

Research Analysis of DSR’s Work:  Museum of Image & Sound, Rio De Janeiro 2011

The architecture of the museum is inspired by the surrounding environment which is the Copacabana beach. It takes the shape of its coastline, its mountains and its wraparound building wall. The vertical outdoor circulation connects the street with the activities on the building (the Auditorium, Terrace Bar, Café, the Piano Bar, the Restaurant, outdoor cinema). This building won the 2010 Progressive Architecture Award.

Research ďƒ˜ Creative Arts Center, Brown University, Providence 2010

The Creative Arts Center is made up of three continuous floor plates which are cut in the short axis along a shear line and displaced in section to create six half floor levels for different activities. They intentionally made this design so that each floor can face two other floors conjoined by a glass wall.

Research ďƒ˜ Light Sock designed for Swarovski, 2010

This chandelier is designed beyond the style of the traditional chandelier with the branching structure and the hanging crystals. It is made of a bag full of crystals with a light source in the middle. It’s a good example illustrating the main concept behind DS+R which is designing beyond traditional style.

Research ďƒ˜ Lincoln Center Hypar Restaurant, New York, 2010

A twisted plane of grass is acting as a roof garden over the glass pavilion restaurant overlooking the pool. The topography of the twisted plane is designed to prevent city noise and traffic.

Research  Center for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta, GA 2009

The CCHR is designed with an artificial horizon line on the south side that unfolds into an open-air public space under a floating roof. The building is divided into three parts: the middle part representing the “present”, the lower part representing the “past” with light and sound controlled galleries and upper part representing the “future” with meeting spaces, auditorium and café.

Research ďƒ˜ Highline, New York 2009

The highline was designed in place of the abandoned elevated railroad stretching from the Meatpacking District to the Hudson Rail Yards in Manhattan. It is a 1.5 long public park. The firm won the AIA New York Honor Award for Urban Design for this project.

Research  Phantom House 2007

It was written an article about this house in “The New York Times Magazine” with the title of “Eco-tecture” which means designing architecture with the environment in mind. The house is a desert house that produces more energy than it consumes. The house is consisted of similar twin floors: an indoor conditioned house and an outdoor part. Energy taken from domestic activities is saved and used for domestic services as needed

Research ďƒ˜ Eyebeam Museum of Art and Technology, New York 2004

Part of the museum is for presentation for the art and part is for production. A ribbon goes from side to side as it climbs up the street, floor folding into wall. Every time the ribbon changes direction, the stage changes from production to presentation and vice versa. Circulation is the main issue in that building.

Research ďƒ˜ Blur Building, Exposition Pavilion: Swiss Expo, Yverdon-Les-Bains 2002

The building is a structure surrounded by an artificial cloud that you could step into. Water is taken from the lake, filtered and shot as a fog through 35,000 high-pressure nozzles. The building is a weather system which makes its own weather. The only thing separating inside from outside is the water. Water is the primary material for the building.

Research DSR’s Concepts:  DS+R approach architecture with the notion of building beyond the traditional concepts of what buildings should be. They are very interested in analyzing how social rules force the people to adapt to traditional architectural concepts. They want to free us from these social rules. They always build things that interest them despite the traditional shape people are used to. They express function but in an equally untraditional manner. DSR’s Vocabulary:  Beyond traditional style  Innovative  Unconventional  Twisted/inclined planes  Readable  Flexible (Concept then form)  Circulation  Leveling  Connecting spaces without barriers  Visual continuity (using materials like glass and water to enhance this idea)

Research Site Analysis: Factors Affecting Design: ďƒ˜ View: The view of the pyramids would be the most important view so the design should benefit from this nice view

Research  Climate: - High temperatures in winter range from 12°C to 17°C, while night-time temperature drop to below 7°C, often to 5°C and the lowest recorded temperature was 0.8°C . In summer, the temperature rarely surpasses 40°C, and lows drop to about 20°C. - Wind storms can be frequent, bringing Saharan dust into the site during the months of March and April
