Dr. Liz Sander was this year’s Rankin -in-Scholar for Drexel Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, hosting a lecture and workshop on her MAKETOOLS process.
Students, community members and profesionals worked together to create present state & future state outcomes for local Philadelphia organizations based on existing situations needing solutions.
About Dr. Liz Sanders
Dr. Liz Sanders is an associate professor at Ohio State University specializing in participatory design research and generative design thinking. She is also the author of The Convivial Toolbox: Generative Research for the Front End of Design. Liz is also the founder of MAKETOOLS, a company that explores the new spaces in the emerging design landscapes. She speaks and conducts workshops about participatory design research, collective creativity and transdisciplinarity all over the world.

What Are MAKETOOLS?
MAKETOOLS is a participatory design research method used with communities to explore the present state of a situation or issue needing to be solved, and imagining a future scenario solution for it. This is done using a variety of physical materials from pipe cleaners to mini dolls.

How might we better serve the community with our emergency department?
MAKETOOLS Creations:
A process to separate primary care and urgent/emergency care needs through separate flows
Creating a waiting/play area for children that allows the childrens in the rooms to feel a sense of community
Creating an app that can help patients transition to outpatient care with appointment reminders and check-ins, and how the app functionality can engage parents and children at the same time

PENN MEDICINE
How might we better serve the patients at Penn Medicine through the collection of their information?
MAKETOOLS Creation:
A waiting room with multigenerational spaces and activities, with the intent to create a calming environment and a place of belonging to make patients feel more comfortable when speaking with care providers

The re-imagined future of more consistent healthcare interactions between doctors and their patients throughout their patient’s lifetime, resulting in better data management

SECOND STORY COLLECTIVE
How might we create opportunities for elder community members to engage with our intergenerational home-sharing projects? How might we communicate this value through programming and activities?
MAKETOOLS Creation:
A “homestead” yard that allows younger and elder residents to garden together through the use of ergonomic tools such as a easy-grip shovel and raised planting bed
MAKETOOLS Creation:
A co-living space where residents share a common space in the middle of the home, garden together to provide food for the community, and create stronger ties with Drexel University to promote engagement
