I THINK OF IT as the perfect strand of pearls on the perfect little black dress. I am referring to the perfect kitchen element, be it a pendant light above an island, a stunning range hood, or counter stools that seem to urge guests to “sit a spell.” In any kitchen renovation, there are big decisions to be made. Quartz countertops or marble? Lacquered cabinetry or wood laminate? Porcelain flooring or hardwood? But we’ve observed that designers and homeowners are dedicating as much thought to those little added touches that enhance the space as they are to materials, volume and shape. These are the touches that become the wow factor, the metaphorical string of pearls. Lighting, for instance. I love the metallic pendant lights in the NDG kitchen of Mathieu Huard and Justine Côté, which we profile in this issue. They remind me of theatre lights. Yes, lighting is a practical element that we all need but it can enhance a space in so many ways. I also love the industrial-style pendants that designer Jean Stéphane Beauchamp installed above the island in Fernando Serboncini’s downtown condo kitchen. They draw on the ethos of the surrounding historic neighbourhood, which once boasted many industrial buildings, now converted to housing.
And you don’t get much funkier than the kitchen that homeowner Anne Turcic designed for herself with its pink – yes, pink – Lacanche range. If you’re going to cook, you might as well do it on a range in your favourite colour. There are so many design elements that we can incorporate into our kitchens that make the spaces uniquely ours. Through colours, materials and shapes, homeowners are putting their personal stamps on their kitchens. JEAN MONET What makes a perfect design project? “Perfect teams,” says interior designer Jean Monet of himself and architectural designer Nataly Houle, who created one of the kitchens profiled in this issue. “The other perfect team is Julie and Stephen, the owners of the kitchen we designed,” Jean adds. “It’s not just ideas and plans that create a wonderful concept, but receptive and open-minded clients who are aware of their needs but need help visualizing the final masterpiece.” Jean styled the kitchen for the photographs, which were taken by art director Randy Laybourne.
TRACEY MacKENZIE Tracey MacKenzie says she likes kitchen gadgets, “especially the ones that make my life easier.” Two of her favorites are Breville’s custom bread maker, which allows for the addition of nuts and fruit to homemade bread, and the Tri-Blade spiral vegetable slicer by World Cuisine, which makes spirals of carrots, zucchini and beets. “And when it comes to furniture, I love the trend of adding a banquette to a dining table. I first did this in my home in 2001 with an armless, high-backed chaise, and everyone thought I was crazy. I’m thankful the trend has moved to more streamlined versions.” For this issue, Tracey wrote a guide to kitchen furnishings and one that highlights the hottest kitchen gadgets on the market. SUSAN KELLY Susan Kelly likes to think that as a writer, she wears many hats. But she doffs them all to the multitasking master she profiles in this issue, the West Coast artist Shawn O’Keefe. She was fascinated to explore the complexity of thought and technique behind the tranquil surfaces of his exquisite landscape paintings “Calling him and his work multidimensional is to understate the case,” she says. “Yet somehow, he fuses his many facets into something wonderful.” Susan is a frequent contributor who specializes in style and decor.
JULIE GEDEON In researching a story for this issue, seasoned Montreal writer Julie Gedeon appreciated learning how kitchen experts can personalize otherwise standard plans for a new home if they are called upon before construction begins. “The project I profiled also reflects the beautiful possibilities for a butler’s pantry,” she says.

EVERY KITCHEN REMODEL STARTS SOMEWHERE – with an idea, a theme, a style, a desire, a plan, a need, a whim that involves the yearning for something new. But this kitchen, one could say, just came out of the blue. Blue, in fact, was the one thing the owners of this older home in Montreal’s St. Henri district knew they wanted for sure. Blue cabinets, to be precise. So they turned to Montreal-based Cuisines Denis Couture, a custom kitchen specialist. “It’s rare that clients want to have colour,” says designer Mélanie Brodeur, of Cuisines Denis Couture, who helped the owners redefine their kitchen space. “They wanted blue,” she continues. “It gave me the opportunity to explore a bit.”

The couple opted for a rich navy for their melamine cabinets with gold-toned metal hardware, and topped with a crisp white quartz counter surface. Brodeur says the fact that the island countertop was designed as a single uninterrupted space – without a sink or range – created a large work surface, as well as a versatile spot that serves as an inviting hub for friends and family to gather around when the homeowners are hosting. A built-in shelving unit is incorporated at one end of the island, providing space for cookbooks and other items to be displayed. The owners also knew what they were looking for in terms of style. They wanted what they referred to as something modern, yet rustic, Brodeur says. •

The deep blue of the cabinets contrasting with the white of the countertops took care of the modern part of the equation. The rustic element would be introduced with a few select accents. The first rustic touch was injected with the thick natural wood shelves on the walls. Mounted with black cast-iron brackets, the upper shelves on each side of the range hood, as well as tucked up against the original brick chimney in the corner of the room, filled the

bill. These sturdy accents also provide function, creating a venue for the display of such rustic-themed elements as copper canisters and vintage glass jars. The barn-style pantry door, which glides along a black metal upper track, also plays to the rustic theme. Its black painted chalkboard finish forms a large surface that can be used as a life-size note board or artistic canvas; a playful element that is bold, dark and eye-catching. •

The counter stools, with their wooden seats and backs, and steel frames, add a classic vintage look. And the black metal pendant lights over the island bestow a slightly industrial vibe. The farm-style sink, as well as the white porcelain subway tiles set in a chevron pattern on the walls soften the overall look. And a convenient added touch that is both modern and rustic: a wall-mounted stainless-steel pot-filler with an articulated arm by the range top. “They knew what they wanted,” Brodeur says. “They were prepared” with a clear vision of how it would all come together.” Maybe the final result was not so out of the blue after all. •
A barn-door-style panel that runs along a steel track provides access to a large pantry. With a black chalkboard-painted finish, it forms a large surface that can be used as a life-size note board or artistic canvas. The black metal dome pendant lights above the island add a slightly industrial vibe to the space.

JOSÉE ANNE BERGERON’S KITCHEN was already the heart of her family’s Pointe-Claire home, but even she was surprised by how a kitchen redesign could change the feel of the entire house and make the room more functional and user-friendly. Everything has its place in the new contemporary-style kitchen that replaced the former old, country-style one. And now there’s room for more than one cook, thanks to the large island. What’s more, as many as 14 can be seated for dinner around a 12-foot-long kitchen table. •

“They told me they would be entertaining a lot,” explains Mario Painchaud, the Montreal designer behind the renovation, and owner of c3studio design firm. “But they didn’t want to always have to eat in the dining room. The kitchen was so closed, though.”

There were tight squeezes here and there and limited counter space. Painchaud says he transformed the space into what the homeowners wanted by removing the walls separating the kitchen, living room and dining room, and then creating an open-plan design, with the kitchen as its hub.

The new kitchen is designed around what Painchaud calls “three volumes” – by which he means three oversized stand-alone cabinets, covered in walnut veneer and serving both a utilitarian and aesthetic function. The three cabinet units are situated in the middle of the kitchen and run parallel to one another, with space between them to allow the homeowners to circulate. One “volume” serves as the kitchen island and has a quartz countertop, sink, dishwasher, pot drawer, range and stainless-steel hood. The second contains a side-by-side fridge, two ovens and cabinets for food and dishes. The third houses the washer, dryer and laundry storage. •

“I like things clean, clean, clean,” says Painchaud of the design, adding that he also favours a monochromatic palette. “Some designers use colour as a tool to delineate space. I like to work with shapes, lines and proportions to delineate space.” The kitchen-island cabinet appears to be floating because its floorboard kickplate was set 10 inches deep, instead of the usual three inches. And, taken together, “the three volumes” look like a series of modern sculptures. After the redesign, Josée-Anne says, the kitchen quickly made her home a go-to place for family gatherings. “The largest group we have had was 85 for the engagement party we had for our nephew.” •
The wrought-iron base of the 12-footlong kitchen table was custom-made. The homeowners found chairs that matched remarkably well.

Entertaining became much more fun, she says, as did everyday meals. She says her husband, Jean-Marc Legentil, was also pleased by the separate counter for his espresso coffee machine and the oversized range hood fan. “He cooks like a man,” she jokes. “There’s sometimes a little smoke.”

After enjoying their kitchen for four years, the couple recently said goodbye to the home. With all six of their children now out on their own, the five-bedroom, four-bathroom house was too large. But the kitchen ended up serving a purpose they had not anticipated when they undertook the redesign. “There was no doubt about it,” says Josée Anne. “The kitchen sold the house.” •

Artist Shawn O’Keefe creates his landscape paintings after his workday is done BY SUSAN KELLY
VICTORIA ARTIST SHAWN O’KEEFE is best known for his paintings of exquisitely tranquil landscapes that depict the many moods of Vancouver Island’s forests and coastline. But their serene surfaces belie the frenetic pace of the artist’s work life. By day, O’Keefe oversees art direction and graphic design for a craft brewery in Victoria. He also owns his own graphic design firm, Artificial Flavour Graphic Engineering, which handles projects ranging from magazine illustration and logo design to designing skateboard and surf graphics for a variety of lifestyle brands. And he’s part of an art collective that produces experimental artworks. “I’m a little all over the place,” he says with a self-deprecating laugh, “but it keeps both life and my work exciting.” •

Through it all, over the past 15 years he has developed his own focused approach to painting. A search for manmade structures or people in these works is in vain; the artist intentionally omits them. Freed from the limitations of any pre-set narrative, viewers are freer to evoke their own memories or be open to new experiences.

O’Keefe reduces forms to their essential geometry, using big colour blocks to reference their essential shapes. He also injects a more freeform and improvisatory style that features a bold use of colour. “I’m always impressed when I see painting that can capture the essence with only a few strokes,” he says. “In my own work, I try to get the most I can out of the least number of strokes.” •

Canada’s legendary Group of Seven painters were “definitely a huge influence.” Having studied graphic design at Malaspina College, now Vancouver Island University, O’Keefe says he feels an affinity with founding member Tom Thomson and colleagues. The Group of Seven painters also worked as graphic artists early in their careers. O’Keefe credits this background for his use of strong, spare lines.

The artist grew up in the 1970s on a little farm in the Cowichan Valley with parents who encouraged his artistic leanings. He was surrounded by art. His mother ran a hairdressing business inside the family home. Between appointments, she would work on a painting or drawing, and encourage her son to do the same. Inspired by Mad magazine, O’Keefe dabbled in cartooning, too. And he was exposed to the “hippie arts-crafts movement” by his parents’ friends from the San Francisco Bay area, who would bring books and magazines when visiting. •

By the late 1990s, he was experimenting with graffiti art, and learned to use spray paint. He continues to use it today along with the more traditional acrylic paints he generally works with. He occasionally executes landscapes on canvas, but prefers twoby-three-foot maple or birch-wood panels. And although he likes the idea of painting en plein air, he finds it more practical to make sketches and studies while on hiking or camping trips with his family. “My wife Susan is more into outdoor activities, such as mountaineering, rock-climbing and surfing, than I am,” he says, “but I do love being out, immersed in nature.” The sketches are turned into paintings at night and on weekends after his day jobs. He has carved a light-filled studio out of a converted carport in the couple’s Maplewood-area home. A collection of guitars, electronic equipment, and a drum kit are also stored there. In the rare moments he gets to unwind, he likes to sit in on jam sessions with the couple’s two sons, Graeme, 16, and Ian, 14. Two or three evenings per week, the artist also can be found in a separate studio space above a record store in downtown Victoria. There, he and two other artists, Blythe Hailey and Sean McLaughlin, stretch their own canvasses and work on large collaborative paintings. Known as the Woodpile Collective, they have developed a process since 2003 in which they sometimes work together; at other times, they each tackle a work in sequence. •

“It’s a very crazy, free approach, and lots of fun,” O’Keefe says. “We start with no sketches, no concept. We just paint.” Colour palettes tend to be on the wild side and very little is held sacred when it comes to creating these works. Often one artist will take the work in one direction only to have another take it in a new one — even painting over a previous effort. Some of this improvisational style carries over into O’Keefe’s solo landscape paintings. In them, he sometimes becomes quite aggressive with the spray paint and purposely leaves evidence of its use. He believes this crossover approach has widened the appeal of his work. Often the younger crowd who view the Woodpile Collective’s quirky graffiti-filled canvasses linger to view O’Keefe’s landscapes. His works have been shown in a number of shows, both big and small, over the years. These days, he also occasionally holds pop-up exhibits in local coffee shops or other venues. He sells his paintings mainly online through his website, www.Trust36.com, and can be reached directly for sales and commissioned works at shawnokeefeart@mail.com. O’Keefe’s plans for 2018 include some forays with his family, deep into British Columbia’s interior, sketchbook in hand. “And I’m hoping my schedule will allow more time for painting, which I really love,” he says. •

AN INSPIRING VISTA This Montreal condo’s kitchen allows its owner to enjoy sweeping urban views while cooking

EVERY GREAT CHEF has a source of inspiration, that well from which flows the desire to create a feast for the palate. For Fernando Serboncini that source is clear – especially on a sunny day. It is the view of Montreal from his kitchen on the 33rd floor at Square Victoria. As he stands at his island cooktop, he surveys the city. Within his sightlines is the mountain, including the George-Étienne Cartier monument on the edge of Mount Royal along Avenue du Parc, and the elegant steeple that reaches from St. Patrick’s Basilica that is artfully illuminated after dark. Off to the left is the heart of downtown; to the right is the outline of Montreal’s iconic Olympic Stadium tower. It is this panoramic view that not only set the stage for the design of his kitchen; it also dictated in large measure the colours that would be used in this space that is filled with natural light. •

“Because it’s so bright, I said I want to do a dark kitchen,” explains Jean Stéphane Beauchamp, the principal designer and owner of the Montreal-based Jean Stéphane Beauchamp Design, explaining his choice of a lacquered finish for the cabinetry in Off Black by Farrow & Ball. The next challenge was to ensure the kitchen plays off the view. How could the homeowner see the view while cooking? The solution was to make sure that Fernando would always be looking out. This dictated that the cooktop be placed in the island. Why would he want to turn his back on the windows and face a wall? •

Then came the next challenge: how to ensure the range hood would not obstruct the view. “We went with the most streamlined,” Beauchamp says, explaining the choice of vent, adding that it was positioned “as high as possible and still be effective.” The result: A setting that inspires weekend breakfast feasts Fernando looks forward to creating. “It’s definitely a kitchen that doesn’t compete with the view, but holds its own,” says Beauchamp. That it does, as it provides an urban vibe that reflects the city it casts an ever-present eye over – both urban and upscale, contemporary but visibly storied with parts of the past showing. A glimpse of that vibe is found in the backsplash, designed using thin slices of glazed brick. “It gives you this beautiful textured tile with those beautiful lumps and bumps of brick,” Beauchamp says. “It’s quite beautiful.”
From the hints of vintage provided by the brick, the space also flirts with the contemporary, with a sink by The Galley. This linear top-end stainless-steel trough has discreet recessed edges to fit a series of tiered accessories, from bamboo cutting boards to strainers, to racks and inlaid serving bowls. Asked to describe his kitchen in his own words, Fernando offers: “It’s not super-aggressively modern.” Then he pauses. “I like this modern, but slightly rustic look.” Prodding him slightly: Does he like the black? He doesn’t hesitate: “It didn’t occur to me to make it white.” It’s a space – like his city – with which he feels very comfortable. •

With five children between them, they needed more counter space for meal preparation, a kitchen island for casual dining, and a design that would allow family members to pass through without getting in the way of the cook: Julie. •

Although the house was relatively new (nine years old), the kitchen layout just didn’t work. The stove, fridge and sink in the old kitchen were positioned on three different sides of the room, making it difficult for cooking, especially when people gathered around the island as they often did. Making matters worse, the kitchen had two archways, one to the adjacent den and the other to the dining room, robbing valuable wall space that could have been used for cabinets. So the couple called in Montreal designer Jean Monet of Monet Interiors and architectural designer Nataly Houle of ArtZone in Ste. Hyacinthe to make it all work. “Nothing was left but the f loor,” says Monet of the four-week kitchen renovation project, which was completed in the autumn of 2017. “It was not a practical design,” he says of the former kitchen. •
Storage space was essential to Julie and Steve. With five children between them, having a place for everything makes it easier to keep their busy kitchen tidy.

She devised a design to remove a small window over the kitchen sink. Although the window looked out on the backyard, pool and patio, it occupied what could have been the only solid wall in the kitchen. Once it was removed, Monet explains, they were able to install a wall of cabinets, including two pantries. The new sink, along with a garbage disposal unit, was installed in a new L-shaped
island topped with white Caesarstone quartz. The new location of the sink meant that it, along with the stove and fridge, formed a neat work triangle and they were no longer in the pathways of adjoining rooms. Double-stacked drawers and more cabinets were then installed on three sides of the new island.

LED recessed lighting made up for the loss of light from the window. And the new island has seating for five in a house with five children, aged 11 to 22, in a kitchen that never closes. “Now it’s fun to be in the kitchen,” says Stephen. “Julie likes to cook up a storm on Sundays, prepare for the week ahead. We can have people over, family. Someone pops in and it’s easy.”

And the family loves the way the kitchen looks. “There’s a timeless thing about white kitchens,” Stephen says, but adds that he and Julie are happy they chose a charcoal-coloured lacquered cabinetry. “It’s elegant, glossy. It’s sexy. It’s hot,” he says. •

IT WAS NATURAL THAT ANNE TURCIC, a wedding and event designer in Hamilton, known for her love of romantic baroque style, would turn to that style when her husband promised her the kitchen of her dreams for their 25th wedding anniversary. She grew up with three older brothers. Today she has two sons. Her older brothers and her husband’s brothers all have sons and no daughters, making her an aunt to 11 more boys. When the opportunity came to redesign the kitchen of the family’s 40-year-old Stoney Creek home, she thought this was the perfect moment for pink. •

The storybook kitchen renovation with its pinks, gold and whites, ornate cabinetry and crystal chandeliers is a dream come true for Anne. “I’ve liked pink since I was 10 and decorated my bike with pink crepe paper and streamers,” she says. “I’ve always loved it.” She admits her husband Dave got “a lot of

heckling” from his hockey buddies: “What do you mean, a pink stove?” But now, she says, he and their sons feel just as at home in the new kitchen as she does. When picking the paint for a ceiling medallion above one of the chandeliers, she says, they all picked pink over white. But then again, she notes: “They do have their man cave.”
The project took 18 months to complete and, when all was said and done, it exceeded its original $100,000 budget, demonstrating once again that few renovations ever go as expected. The relaxed ceramic subway tiles on the wall behind the rose-coloured Lacanche gas range had to be taken down and reinstalled to fix a leak in the water pipe running to the pull-out brass faucet for filling pots. •

And then other parts of the project were delayed because some of the new appliances, although purchased from Canadian suppliers, were manufactured in Europe and held up because of transportation issues and other reasons. Such was the case with the two tall, narrow stainless-steel Liebherr fridges, imported from Germany, that are panelled, armoire-style. “The French Barn arranged to fly our stove from France,” Anne says. “And our cabinetry people went above and beyond to make it the kitchen of my dreams. Despite many complications along the way, it was working alongside Cromade Cabinetry and QuartzCo that made it all worthwhile.”

Anne is a perfectionist. She went to the United States to buy the brass faucet, and she painted and distressed all the hardware and drawer pulls herself so they would match the antique white of the kitchen cabinets perfectly. “I want what I want,” she says, reflecting a single-mindedness that has made her a success at organizing weddings, parties and other events. “In my mind, it all made sense.” The nine-foot-long 18th-century Chippendale hand-carved table and china cabinet were imported from Paris. Anne bought them on a Facebook page called Junk in da Trunk. She sourced the vintage brass chandelier at Vineland Antiques.

The new kitchen is a full one-third larger than the old one. The old dining room was folded into the new 500-square-foot kitchen space, now perfect for the entertaining she likes to do. She took advantage of the extended renovation time to go through her own pretty things: vintage china, crystal, mirrors, antique furniture. It’s inventory she has collected over the years for her business, Anne & Co., a photography studio and small event space, where she also sells custom-made, painted furniture. At times, she says, some of the contractors she was working with were skeptical about her vision, particularly whether the whites,
creams, pinks and golds would match. But that’s where her years of loving colour, going right back to her childhood, served her well. Anne says she knew how to match undertones so that all the colours would harmonize. And, she adds, she couldn’t be happier with the end result. Three months after the kitchen was completed, she and her husband went to Europe for the first time. Of course, Anne stopped in at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris to see its famous romantic baroque design. She could see that Louis XIV set the design bar very high: “Thank God, I didn’t go there first!” she says. •

FOR THOSE PLANNING TO BUILD a property in a new development, a Laval couple offers their approach to making a standard model house into a dream home. By calling upon cabinetry design experts before any construction began, they modified their plans to integrate their ideal kitchen and have it set the tone for the rest of their new house. “They sought a kitchen that makes an impact within a traditional realm,” says Julie Gauthier, one of the project’s two designers from Club Cuisine BCBG. “They wanted something classic yet chic that incorporated their personal tastes and provided enough practical space for a family with three young children as well as for entertaining friends.” •

“The homeowners wanted an island large enough for everyone to gather around during a cocktail party,” Gauthier says. “They picked the chrome stools to add a touch of glam.” While all the major appliances are stainless steel, their industrial heft is counterbalanced by the preponderance of white and the wooden beams. •

The butler’s pantry doubles as a beverage station with glassware elegantly displayed behind the glass-fronted cabinets.
Rather than have a wall of cabinets end abruptly as is traditionally done, the designers customized smaller display cabinets as well as storage space – some of which double as window seating. “We really wanted the kitchen to flow into the dinette,” Deslauriers says. “The butler’s pantry likewise connects the kitchen to the dining room in a way that has a lot more use and character than a plain hallway.” Deslauriers and Gauthier were also able to reconfigure the home’s initial design to accommodate the 20-by-15-foot walk-in pantry. “It’s amazing what can be changed if we become involved during the planning stage,” Gauthier says.
Marble subway tiles give the backsplash a timeless quality. Along with the quartz countertops, the tiles were also installed in the butler’s pantry.

By making the kitchen a touch smaller, the designers were able to integrate a walk-in pantry that is mostly out of sight yet conveniently located adjacent to the butler’s pantry.
The pantry offers extensive shelving and counter space. “The homeowners have a food processor and other small appliances on the counter there, ready to use without cluttering the kitchen,” Deslauriers says. She and Gauthier came up with the signature look for the glass-fronted cabinetry. “It’s a bit rustic, but its simplicity distinguishes it,” Gauthier says. “It’s those unique elements that the clients say make this kitchen the heart of their home.” •

“EVERYTHING MUST GO” was the prime directive issued by the homeowners prior to this kitchen renovation. Mathieu Huard and Justine Côté had lived in the five-bedroom two-storey home in Notre Dame de Grace for less than two years. Built in 1953 as a duplex and then later converted to a single-family home, the house’s kitchen was hopelessly outdated. “It was in the wrong place and had awful faux wood cabinets,” recalls Justine. “The only thing we kept was the beautiful hardwood oak flooring.” •

The kitchen update was part of a larger renovation of the entire 1,000-square-foot first floor. The structure was stripped down to the studs and insulated. The kitchen remained at the back of the house, but was relocated to the opposite wall. That meant the original one was operational during construction. It came in handy for Justine, who was home on maternity leave from her job as a clinical pharmacist and expecting their second child at the time. As for the new design, it was more about “fiat lux” for the couple. They wanted an open-concept floor plan and a kitchen flooded with natural light. And although as young professionals their tastes are more on the contemporary side, they didn’t want the kind of stark design they had previously lived with in a condo. “We live busy, complex lives and find pure and simple lines relaxing to come home to,” Justine says.
Retaining some of the home’s mid-century style was also important to the couple. It’s an approach that suited interior designer Korina Khamis, principal designer and coowner of Hibou Design & Co., whose team handled the main f loor transformation. “Sometimes, people overdo it when trying to get a modern look,” Khamis says. “But when done right, mixing traditional and modern style can create a look that is timeless and easy to live with.” An all-white colour scheme was chosen for just that reason. While it’s not only the most popular way to go today, this designer strongly feels it is a look that will not be dated for at least 10 years. For the kitchen, Khamis proposed the Shaker-style cabinets and ran crown molding across the top to honour the home’s past. The cabinets’ slightly elongated, vertical profile plays against distinctive chrome handles, which are set on the horizontal for a contemporary flair. •

The island top and countertops are adorned with the elegant look of white marble with subtle grey veining. It is marble in appearance only, as the ultra-durable composite material called Neolith, is a combination of quartz, porcelain and glass, chosen with durability in mind. The designer also used the same slabs on the backsplash to f low seamlessly from the countertop. Beside the refrigerator stands a pantry and a bar with even more storage. Glass-panelled doors were added to the cabinets above. In addition to providing a place to display prized glassware and serving pieces, the panes echo the windows on the opposite side of the room. Beyond the dining room lies the playroom, designed with the two children, now toddlers, in mind. There are built-in benches for them to clamber on, and storage underneath in which to stash their toys. In contrast to the neutral palette used in the kitchen and dining area, bright colours are used in throw pillows and seat cushions. •

Justine most appreciates how she can easily see the children from the kitchen island. “The island is my favourite spot and the place we seem to use the most,” she says. For this reason, she chose counter stools as much for their comfort as for the stylish Eames-inspired mid-century look. And she was adamant about not having a sink there, preferring an uninterrupted seven-foot-long surface upon which to prepare meals. The couple also find it is easier to feed the children there tha n at the dining table. Even though its natural oak top and metal frame are sturdy enough to stand up to any child’s abuse, it is mostly used when entertaining. “We love the kitchen, with its open, uncluttered look and just enough personal touches that reflect our sense of fun,” Justine says. •

LUXURIOUS AND PRACTICAL This brand of quartz surfaces offers products that are on trend and as beautiful as stone BY SUSAN KELLY
TOO OFTEN, QUARTZ SURFACES are regarded as a compromise between practicality and luxury. Vicostone challenges the assumption with products that take both qualities to a whole new level. Not only do the company’s slabs artfully recreate the look of natural stone, their beauty is much more than skin deep. If you haven’t heard of the company yet, you soon will. After launching in Canada almost two years ago, one of the largest manufacturers of engineered stone surfaces already is generating a buzz among designers and architects here. “We aim for an exceptional level of design, and to be on or ahead of trend,” says Thai Nguyen, chief executive officer for Vicostone Canada. “And there is state-of-the-art technology behind our products.” Over the past 15 years, the company has produced millions of metres of quartz surfaces using what is known as “Breton technology.” “Using Breton technologies, with the high quality of natural quartz aggregates supplied by European countries, assures the manufacture of the highest-quality slabs,” Nguyen says.

Production is based in Vietnam, a country that many luxury brands turn to for its solid reputation for quality craftsmanship. The location also lowers costs for the final product because of favourable labour costs, and that’s passed on to end users. Vicostone specializes in the marble look that now dominates in kitchen and bath decor. Most producers focus on monochrome shades of either white, beige or grey. Re a lizing that nature has a richer palette, Vicostone’s designers include subtle streaks of another colour to more closely mimic the original. A white-and-grey marble lookalike may have just a hint of ochre or sienna, for instance. But whether subtle or dramatic, any veining seen on the surface runs through the body of the slab. Which means it will appear on any cut edge showing, just as with real stone. And trend-wise, there is nothing subtle about veining in marble slabs for 2018. This is reflected in three new products from the Exotic Collection, says Nguyen. For high contrast and drama, there is Nero Marquina (BQ8740), a rich black quartz with blazes of white veining. Diamante (BQ8788) is a pale grey quartz streaked with a darker shade; its polished surface adds a sophisticated touch to virtually any monochrome colour scheme. For those who prefer more restrained elegance, there is Cemento (BQ8730), so named because it resembles a trendy concrete surface. Bigger does not always mean better, especially in the world of design. But jumbo-size slabs — those that measure 65 by 130 inches as opposed to the standard 56 by 120 —are

the exception. “Vicostone offers 29 designs in this size; most of our competitors have only a few,” says Nguyen. This makes it possible to have a kitchen island over 10 feet long without a single seam. Slabs in stock are available in two- and three-centimetre thicknesses, and can be specially ordered in a 1.2-centimetre thickness. Then, there are the details. “This is probably the most elaborate kitchen I’ve ever done,” says Diamond, the owner of emd Design. “When I look at this kitchen, I look at it as a whole, inhabited sculpture. It is a piece of sculpture.”

And like a piece of art, finding the right words to describe it is a challenge. There is a lot of kitchen here. But before we get down to the form and function, let’s talk about the colour. A request of one of the owners at the outset of this renovation was blue countertops. It’s not a common must-have, so it required some research. Diamond came up with this light stone surface – quartzite – with intricate white veining. It is also used on the backsplash behind the range and along the wall in the bar area. Then, Diamond explains, she wanted to add something grey. And that is when she turned to Tampold, architect and owner of Yorkville Design Centre, an exclusive retailer of Downsview Kitchens. The cabinets were custom-built by Downsview Kitchens. But they are unique in more ways than the word “custom” suggests. They are covered in plastic laminate panels, but instead of using the lacquered finish, Tampold reversed the cladding. What is seen – the matte grey with the white veined pattern – is actually the backside of the plastic laminate. “It gave it a softer look with the matte finish, an interesting look,” explains Tampold. The president of Downsview Kitchens personally approved the use of the product in this out-of-the-ordinary way, he adds. •

The grey cabinets were then complemented with high-gloss lacquered cabinetry, adding a sense of sophistication. And all three elements – the white, the grey and the blue – interact throughout the entire space. And space is another way this kitchen defines itself. Covering an area that is more than 1,080 square feet, the room comes complete with three refrigerators, four sinks, two ovens, a bar area, large display cabinets, a desk nook equipped with a wall-mounted f lat-screen television, and eight separate counter areas. •

The size alone presented a design challenge. “I really studied the space. It was quite challenging to fill the whole space. It was like I was playing Tetris, or a crossword puzzle,” Diamond says, explaining the process of putting all the pieces together. “I played for hours. I wanted to give it grandeur but make it feel intimate at the same time.” This grandeur that Diamond refers to reveals itself in waves. It is not evident all at once. A walk to the rear of the kitchen, toward the bar area, reveals the custom display units – an open floor-to-ceiling cabinet finished in the grey reversed plastic laminate and appointed with glass and chrome shelves that serves as a liquor cabinet. It would not look out of place in an upscale restaurant, with its three full-length chrome-framed glass doors, interior lighting and storage drawers.
There are other details, too – exquisite and surprising ones. “There were a ton of details in this kitchen,” Diamond says with emphasis, citing the peninsula counter that is integrated into the cabinetry unit beside the window, and the Italian glass vessel sink on a small counter space just before the bar area. “It’s the overall and it’s the details,” the designer says. “It’s so integral to the wholeness of the kitchen.” A kitchen, in Tampold’s words, like nothing you’ve ever seen. •

IN HER 30 YEARS as a real estate broker, Susan Lloyd of Profusion Realty Inc./Christie’s International Realty has learned a thing or two about buying and selling in a red-hot market. Lloyd, who covers Westmount, NDG, downtown, and the Golden Square Mile, says that when inventory is low and buyer interest is high, bidding wars and lightning-quick sales way above the listing price abound. “Knowledge is power, whether you are selling your property or looking to buy,” she says. “For buyers, it is important to choose a broker who thoroughly knows his or her market as well as the other brokers in the

area,” Lloyd says. “An informed broker will have added insight on pricing, will be aware of exclusive listings, and should have great connections with his or her confreres and past clients,” she says, noting that the right broker also understands a client’s must-haves and where they might be flexible. Availability is important for both buyers and brokers, Lloyd adds. “A buyer must be available to see a property as soon as it hits the market, and the broker must be available to show it and to answer questions promptly. If both parties are too busy, it can mean lost opportunities.
“If you’re available only on Saturdays, you’re going to miss out,” she cautions. “Brokers put homes on the market every day of the week. They may or may not have an open house on Sunday, and sellers may look at offers quickly. It is a good idea to see properties as rapidly as possible, and be ready to make a decision the same day.” Multiple-offer scenarios – once common only in Toronto and Vancouver – are now frequently seen in pockets of Montreal, including downtown, NDG and Westmount.

“In the past, in a regular market, I have seen as many as 200 homes available for purchase, but at the beginning of 2018, there were only 65 homes on the market in Westmount and 20 of those were rentals,” Lloyd says. What does a market with a lack of inventory mean for buyers? “It means competition among several buyers for the same property,” she says. “An experienced broker will help you navigate the seller’s declaration, so you know what you are buying, and how to construct a competitive offer. He or she will prepare you for the process and explain what to expect, will advise you to get a pre-approved mortgage as soon as possible, and offer you the best strategies for each situation.”

Sellers also benefit from having a knowledgeable broker who can price a property correctly to ensure a swift sale, and be willing to stay involved throughout the process, says Lloyd. “Ask a broker about their marketing strategy so you will know what to expect; different price levels and areas require different approaches. No one wants to list their property with a broker and then never see or speak with them again until there is an offer.” Be wary of brokers who evaluate your home at a high price in order to get your business. This tactic can actually backfire on sellers, she says. “If you launch a house on the market that’s priced correctly, you’ll attract offers. Today’s buyers are very savvy; they’re
not willing to pay any price. If you over-price your home, you’ll get low bids or no bids.” A home that’s priced properly should sell in the first 10 days on the market, which means sellers should be prepared for multiple visits, says Lloyd. Make any small repairs and be sure your property is always tidy and ready to be shown at its best. Your seller’s declaration should be accurate and should reflect what you know about your home. You should also have a valid and up-to-date certificate of location. Lloyd suggests including a note in the listing requiring that the home inspector be mutually agreed upon, to help ensure a fair inspection. In a multiple-offer situation, price is just one part of the equation, she says. Instead, focus on the entire offer. “Some people put in many conditions with long delays, which could indicate a complicated buyer who may be difficult to negotiate with,” she says. Selling a home can be an emotional experience, but in the right hands, the process can be positive, says Lloyd. “I believe in the Zen approach; if you do everything right, the buyer will come.” •

SUPPOSE YOU HAVE an event of some kind to host – a business meeting, a fundraiser, a wedding reception – and your own facilities are inadequate for the occasion. Your alternative is to rent space in a place such as Centre Mont-Royal. A conference and special events centre in the heart of downtown Montreal, it offers meeting rooms and a state-of-the-art theatre, as well as ballrooms and reception areas, both large and small. But it’s not all business; CMR (as it’s known for short) also has a unique feature: an art collection. “Studies show that art fosters creativity, exploration, communication,” says Sandy Retter, vice-president of marketing at CMR. By using the centre’s communal areas to
showcase art, “we’ve added a new dimension to the meeting culture,” she says. And this is true art, original paintings, not the generic reproductions hanging in most public places. Retter says that CMR provides a comfortable business environment of ergonomic seating, excellent air quality, and floor-to-ceiling windows for abundant light. She considers the various paintings displayed in common areas to be an integral part of that setting. “When people come out of meetings into common areas for a coffee or lunch break, that’s their time to exchange ideas about what was presented in the meeting,” she says. “It’s nice to have discussions in pleasant

surroundings. We always seek to enhance the meeting environment, whether it be through catering, technology, service, or decor.” Retter believes that the art reduces stress and enhances morale, and that people love working in an environment that’s not just blank walls or screens. “People don’t necessarily have art in their offices,” she says. “elevates their experience and encourages discussion and expression of opinions.” To please most tastes, the artwork comprises mostly contemporary abstract works. Viewers can take whatever interpretation they wish. CMR put together its permanent collection with the help of Andrew Lui of Han Art. It includes work by such artists as Michel
Beaucage, Harvey Segal, Susan Lazar Hart, and Graham Metson as well as by Lui himself. Recent temporary exhibits have included works by Joseph André and Diane So. Various artists have approached CMR about displaying their work. Participating in a temporary exhibit can be a great career advantage. Because the centre hosts private events, viewers cannot simply walk in off the street, but that’s not a big drawback, because “there can be a thousand people in a day who are exposed to this artist’s work,” Retter says. She notes that the company has received only positive feedback on its endeavours. “We want to encourage everybody to have art in their business environment; it adds so much to daily routines,” she says. “It’s nice to foster creativity. People feel happy around art. When you’re happy you’re creative.” CMR will host a vernissage of works by Michel Beaucage on March 1. “We are very excited to welcome our clients to participate in an evening of art, music and gastronomy,” Retter says. •

SARA FERGUSON AND DAVID BARNETT KNEW they would be able to build their dream home when they found the right parcel of land in Vancouver. But to counterbalance the lot’s narrow and long dimensions, they sought to create as much openness as possible in the house’s interiors. “People are surprised at how wide-open the space is when they step inside,” Sara says. Having worked in real estate, she had a good idea of the look she wanted. “Our place has an L.A. feel that’s great for entertaining, while being spacious, functional and durable for our three young children,” Sara says. •

A custom-made stainless-steel hood connects to the home’s other industrial accents, while complementing the gas range’s sleekness. The homeowners chose a marble-style porcelain for the countertops and backsplash. “It’s an incredibly thin porcelain so it has to be fabricated and installed with great care, but it provides a beautiful non-porous surface,” Schoenroth says. •
The copper pendant lights with their warm and reflective quality are the kitchen’s showstopping elements. Porcelain that mimics Calacatta marble, white cabinetry, and Eames chairs brighten the light wood finish. The homeowner saw the porcelain, which the designer used on the counters and backsplash, at a friend’s home and wanted it for her own. She also asked designer Tanya Schoenroth to give the appliance garage a side door to maintain the cabinetry’s wood surface, as well as make it easy to slide a mixer or blender onto the counter. Craig Pearce of Union Wood Co. built the table at the end of the island where the couple and their three children – aged seven, four and two – gather for meals. “We also do a lot of arts and crafts there,” Sara says. “And it’s great how the table keeps both the kids and adult guests away from the stove and prep area.” Sara chose Eames chairs by Herman Miller for their modern practicality. “I chose dark grey for the table area just to break up the lightness a bit,” she says. •
Designer Tanya Schoenroth designed the cabinetry to form a partial but functional separation between the kitchen and dining room. The engineered wood is stained for a white-washed oak appearance.

Opening to a large family room, the space keeps the youngsters in view. It’s also ideal for the charitable fundraisers the couple hold for their organization, Music Heals, and for the other large social gatherings they host. Unique storage elements include cabinetry that doubles as a buffet and partial wall between the kitchen and dining room. “The kitchen was really fun to design because we had the space to be creative,” Schoenroth says. The hidden gems include an appliance garage with a door that opens sideways to the main counter, a recycling bin centre, several pullout drawers with storage baskets, and two panelled dishwashers, one on each side of the main sink. Having two dishwashers is practical for party cleanups, as well as after the children’s friends visit. “I highly recommend this if you have a young family and the space,” Sara says. She likewise adores the steam oven. “I don’t miss having a microwave at all,” she says. •

CAN A KITCHEN EVER BE TOO BIG? Interior designer Nadia Kies f leetingly considered the issue when challenged with this room of 270 square feet in a new build. She works for Jazzy Design, a Dorval-based company that specializes in custom cabinet manufacturing and design. “My problem was having too much space,” Kies says jokingly – words seldom heard from a designer. Of course, the room wasn’t too big; it simply allowed her to give her clients exactly what they were asking for. •

The owners were moving in from a smaller house, and when they discussed the kitchen with her, “It was really about space,” she says. They wanted a well-organized kitchen with good flow for their family of four, and also “they wanted it in a specific style that went with the house, a little more traditional and Tuscan in feel,” says Kies. Of the couple who own the house, the husband is the contractor who built it, and Kies had worked with him before on other projects. After the couple gave her their general request for style and features (including a butler’s pantry and a traditional walk-in pantry), “they kind of left it open to me,” Kies says. “In fact, they had already chosen the appliances, and I worked the design around those.”
Kies was helped greatly in that Jazzy Design was brought into the project at an early stage in construction and could influence certain elements of the layout. For instance, “We had some play in the location of the windows, which were placed symmetrically flanking where the 48-inch gas range with dual ovens would go,” she says. Being able to make changes early in the building process saves time and money. For this home, the kitchen design was done in about a month, the cabinetry build took approximately two months, and installation took a week. •
Although the room is fairly large, the positioning of the range, ovens, fridge (to the right of the wall ovens), and island prep surface make for an efficient work triangle. The butler’s pantry and walk-in pantry are entered to the left of the wall ovens.

Holding pride of place in the room is a large maple island, 8.5 feet long and 4.5 feet wide. “Because the kitchen is so big and open, I wanted to make the island feel more furniture-like,” Kies says. “We added some detailed corbels in the corners to give it more weight. All the same colour would have blended too much with the rest of the room, so we stained it a rich and warm brown that ties in to the Bianco Antico granite the client chose for the countertops.”
The homeowners requested scrollwork detail on an upper display cabinet. Kies and the Jazzy team complemented this with similar engraved detailing on doorknobs throughout the kitchen and butler’s pantry.

The island is a completely functional prep zone, with a sink and a garbage and recycling pullout so the cook can simply wipe everything off the counter into bins. This is typical of the detail put into kitchen design and amenities, such as pullouts near the range for spices and cooking utensils. Another lovely touch: an upper cabinet features glass panes in the doors with custom-made decorative iron grilles; brushed nickel doorknobs on all the cabinetry have matching black scrolls engraved into them.

This is a space carefully attuned to its users’ needs and aesthetic desires. As Kies points out happily, being in on the design from the beginning and having plenty of space for features means that “there’s nothing that couldn’t be customized or modified. And what really makes this kitchen so aesthetically pleasing is the amount of detail in moldings and edge. It softens the whole look.” •
