Friday 13th March was Red Nose Day and Bickerstaffe School joined thousands of other primary schools to fundraise. Pupils paid a donation of £1 to wear red to school, create crazy hair or paint their faces to make themselves look funny. School also sold red noses before the day and lots of children arrived to school sporting one of the nine Red Nose 2015 designs. From a vampire to a professor, they all looked pretty snazzy and made for some very funny pupils and teachers faces. The Juicy Word team captured on camera some of this year’s Comic Relief looks.

JUICY NEWS Taking a peek at our favourite recent news stories By Alicija Wisniewska

Bonjour to a new language at Bickerstaffe Friday afternoons have taken up a French feel with Class 3 and 4 both learning a foreign language. As part of the new primary school curriculum, introduced in September 2014, Mrs Hall and Mr Draper have become Madame Hall and Monsieur Draper and all of the pupils are keen, as well as excited, to learn French. Children arrive at school each morning to be greeted in French by Madame Hall and chat confidently about how they are feeling. The French lessons are taught on a Friday afternoon and during last term some photographs of the children during their learning were shared with the school community via Twitter. So finally au revoir for now and a plus tard!

New Singing Club Hits the high notes By Isabella Blain Bickerstaffe School now has a singing club thanks to Miss O’Kane and Miss Wade. There is a club for infants and also for juniors. Each Thursday after lunch pupils gather in Class 3 and choose a song to sing. The new club is proving a great success and all the children who attend the junior’s

club enjoy singing with Miss O’Kane. Sometimes the club are put into groups to sing and practice school songs together. Before Christmas the pupils visited Stockley Crescent in Bickerstaffe and sang to the

local community of residents. The audience were delighted with the wonderful heartwarming performance and there is talk of more singing opportunities for the club.

AN OUTSTANDING AND DISTINCTIVE CHRISTIAN ETHOS By Reuben Warwick Last November the Diocese of Liverpool school inspector, Mr Adnit, visited Bickerstaffe School as part of the school’s inspection as a Church of England school. The inspection lasted all day and Mr Adnit spent time in each classroom asking children lots of questions about school, lessons and how we feel. Mr Adnit was impressed with the confidence children had when discussing their faith and remarked how pupils demonstrate significant levels of spiritual maturity. One pupil said: “I know when to listen to God and know that when God is looking down he knows we believe in him.” Mr Adnit also spoke to some parents and asked for their views. One parent commented: “The school’s Christian values support us in bringing up our children. It’s a very inclusive school which welcomes all children.” Another parent summed the school up with these words: “The school is an outstanding community. It is consistently living out its Christian values.” Following the inspection a report was sent to Mrs Hall and this was sent out to all parents. The report highlighted many exceptionally good features and stated that the distinctiveness and effectiveness of Bickerstaffe Primary School as a Church of England school are outstanding. Mrs Hall said: “We are delighted the school has been recognised for its outstanding Christian ethos and the report findings are a testimony to all the hard work that staff and governors have put into creating a loving and inclusive school for all our children and their families.

A PASSION TO HELP Pupils sponsor a child By Isabella Blain Compassion UK is a charity working through local churches in poor communities around the world to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Bickerstaffe School, through fundraising, is sponsoring a child and his name is Dipok. He lives over 5000 miles away in Bangladesh. The sponsorship means we have a one-to-one relationship with Dipok and our money will help provide things he needs. We can write to Dipok too and send him letters about our life in the UK and find out about his life in Bangladesh. All the children in school are really excited about supporting Dipok and helping a child living in a much poorer country than our own. We would like to

sponsor him until he is 18 years old. As well as helping Dipok with his education and development we have decided, as a whole school, to try to run the journey from Bickerstaffe to Bangladesh. The idea came from reading about what Dipok likes to do. He likes to play football, marbles and also run. The total distance from Bickerstaffe to Bangladesh is 5039 miles and we are aiming to complete the challenge by December 18th. Everyone is running, pupils and teachers and so far we have run over 600 miles. We have called the challenge B2B and it is the biggest running challenge the school has ever attempted.

Learning with iPads How we use technology in the classroom By Lauren Speakman and Charlie Sweeney In Bickerstaffe School we use iPads and laptops in our lessons. The technology helps us to find things out on the internet in our English lessons as well as history, RE, guided reading, maths and spelling. Before school purchased the iPads we only used laptops and had to work in pairs. Now we have our own iPads so we all get much more opportunity. One of the favourite learning tools is Fiction Express, which is software specifically designed for schools. It is an interactive eBook that allows the class to decide the plot of a real book. A new chapter is released each Friday and at the end of every cliffhanging chapter there are voting options to decide where the plot should go next. The

readers in Class 4 have until Tuesday the following week to vote after they have read the chapter. The author of the book then writes the next chapter in ‘real time’, according to what the readers chose. Snaffles and the Moonfish Mystery is the latest book the class have been reading. It is a really engaging way to read and without technology in our classroom this would not be possible. In history we can quickly and easily research and find facts about what we are learning, like Henry VIII or the Vikings. Mr Draper likes to use technology for mental maths games, which are fun and a quick way to test the class.

SUPER SPACE TO PLAY

By Harley Sweeney and Olivia Carlisle

The playground gets a makeover and pupils have big plans for the future Just before Christmas Bickerstaffe School bought some new playground equipment costing £11,050, which is a lot of money. The school applied to Awards for All funding for £10,000 and the school’s PTFA funded the rest. The new equipment is amazing and is a great space for pupils to play cricket, football, basketball and much more. The playground is a completely different place with the addition of this bright and colourful equipment that all children can play with. The Juicy Word team have put together their own dream list of what else would be great for the school playground: Den building, obstacle course, a Jacuzzi, rock climbing wall, swimming pool, zip wire and a running track. We hope there is more funding out there!

TOP ATHLETE TRAINS WITH BICKERSTAFFE RUNNING CLUB Testing his ability away from the track, pupils take James Tartt cross country By Eleanor Ashburner Bickerstaffe School Running Club was put through its paces recently when it had a visit from a UK championship 1500 metre runner, James Tartt. James has been competing for Southport and Waterloo Athletics Club since he was ten years old and was invited to join the runners by Kim O’Brien, organiser of the twice weekly running club. With his passion for running he was keen to join the children in their weekly cross country. Before the run the children put James in the hot seat and asked him a series of questions about his athletics career. The runners then set off to the cross country track, where James led them in a series of warm-ups before beginning their 1.4 mile route. Everyone got the opportunity to run with James, as he looped back between groups and observed the runners techniques and ability. Despite the extremely wet and muddy conditions under foot, James survived his first Bickerstaffe cross country run and afterwards he commented how impressed he was with the enthusiasm, pace and stamina of all the runners. To finish the session off and ensure that James really was worn out, the children ran a 400m race on the Bickerstaffe Parish Field. James really enjoyed his visit to Bickerstaffe School, so much so he wants to come back again soon!

THE BIG BOOK-OFF AT BICKERSTAFFE World Book Day took place this year on March 5th and Bickerstaffe School celebrated with a whole week dedicated to books. The week was packed with pages of book related activity. A Book Fair arrived in school on the Tuesday and was open each day after school for children and parents to browse through a selection of books. The fair raised £248, from commission on book sales, and this money will be used to purchase books for each of the four classes at Bickerstaffe School. The week flowed with ideas and to log their journey of reading, the pupils created a reading river. Some pupils and their families read in extreme places during the week and captured their exploits on camera to share with the rest of the school community. The real page-turner was Thursday when the whole school dressed up as a mythical or legendary character from a book of their choice. Pupils were also asked to write persuasive letters to a publisher about their character and book vouchers were awarded to the best. With all the teaching staff embracing the day as much as the pupils, the day was once again a highlight of the school calendar.

TV review

The Jump by Keisha Scott The Jump is a TV programme on Channel 4 and is presented by Davina McCall. It is set in Austria, high up in the mountains in a ski resort. There are three jump slopes ranging from small to big. The series began with 16 celebrities, eight girls and eight boys. The celebrities included Joey Essex, Ashley Roberts, Louie Spence and Chloe Madeley. One of the celebrities described being on the programme as like being on a school trip. The contestants took part in different alpine events from the ski cross, bobsleigh, skeleton and downhill slalom. Joey Essex said he went on the show because he wanted to learn how to ski as he has only ever been on holiday to hot places. Each night the celebrities had to compete against each other with the loser having to face the jump! Louise Thompson, from the TV show Made in Chelsea, became known as the pocket rocket due to her speed and the fact she took out four fellow contestants during racing. The series finished with a nail-biting final jump

between Mike Tindall and Joey Essex and you will not believe who won…Joey Essex! Everyone was really shocked at Joey’s 17 metre jump which beat Mike Tindal’s 16.5 metres.

Dance Mums by Keisha Scott

p Documentary Soa

Some people would say, what is Dance Mums? But after you have read this review you will know many things about it! Dance Mums is a documentary soap style reality show with lots of drama. It’s not the dance mums who dance but the dance mums’ children. The girls in Jennifer’s Dance Academy who are on the show are: Sam, Aleah, Tayluer, Eleiyah, Chloe and Molly. The mums are: Serena, Kelly, Charlotte, Danielle, Maxine, Carol and Helen. Jennifer does have her favourites on the show and sometimes the mums get annoyed or upset. There is an American version of the show, Dance Moms and is on the My Lifetime channel. It follows the Abbey Lee Millar School of Dance and the main star is Maddie Zieglar. Some funny things have happened on the American show and Dance Mums UK and I really enjoy watching each episode to watch the dancing, because I love to dance too!

Book Club Choice There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom by Louis Sachar

Charlie rates it

4 out of 5

Review by Charlie Sweeney

Samsung Watch The Samsung wrist watch is compatible with Samsung’s smart phone. It is not available on its own; it will only work if you also have a smart phone. They are available in a range of colours from silver to black and you can text, take photographs and even play games. There is a lens at the front of the strap

and a miniature microphone at the back of the watch. You can also improve your fitness with special health apps or a heart rate monitor. Personally I think that this is a great piece of high technology produced by Samsung. I would recommend it to anyone who likes technology.

Technology review

by Kieran Sands & Bailey Olverson

iphone 6 The iphone 6 is a very smart piece of technology with a fingerprint recognition system. It is approximately one and a half times bigger than the iphone5 but one problem is it is

now too large for your back pocket! The total screen size is 5.5 inches horizontally. The camera on the new phone is very smart.

The book is written by Louis Sachar, a children’s author, and Class 4 have been reading the book together. He was born on the 20th March 1954 in New York. He went to Antioch College and the University of California. After graduating in 1976, Louis worked in a warehouse during the day and began writing books in the evening. The book is about a new boy at Red Hill School, Jeff Fishkin and he has to sit next to Bradley Chalkers on his first day. Ten-year old Bradley tells enormous lies and no one likes him at school except one girl, Carla, the new school counsellor. She thinks Bradley can change, if only he wasn’t afraid to try. Jeff is different to all the other children in Bradley’s school because he wants to be friends with Bradley. With Carla’s help the story is about how Bradley becomes more confident and starts to believe in himself. The book does have some sad parts but overall it is really funny and I think everyone should read it, even Mr Draper laughed out loud!
