ISSUE TWELVE

Welcome!

Features

Welcome to the summer edition of The Juicy Word. Three new members joined the editorial team this term, Harry James, Tace Cullen and Ruby Phillips and they have made a great contribution in their first edition! Sadly though this is the last issue for our Year 6 pupils; who have all been brilliant writers, photographers, researchers and creatives. We wish them good luck at secondary school and hope they keep on writing and taking pictures! It may have taken over four years but finally Mrs Cartwright was cornered for a chat with the team, just before she left school for pastures new. We will all miss her but the team now have Miss Boyle in their sights for an interview! A new edition to our mag is a snapshot of Class 1 pupils where we find out their first thoughts about school, friends and what they would like to be when they grow up. We look forward to interviewing them again in Year 6 to find out how much they’ve changed. Included in this edition is the great Min-yDon adventure comic, put together by the team. We hope it makes you laugh as much as we all did on the trip! We wish you all a sizzling and super summer holiday and we will see you again next term.

Celebrating Her Majesty th the Queen’s 90 birthday School turns red, white and blue to mark the special occasion On June 10th Bickerstaffe school’s community joined together for a street party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday. Despite the weather and the party taking place indoors, a fantastic afternoon was enjoyed by everyone. Each class performed a specially rehearsed piece to the delight of the audience as well as a lovely rendition of Jerusalem by Holy Trinity church choir. Just before the afternoon closed, the sun returned and guests got a sneak peek of this year’s Dance Fever show.

Five minutes with

Mrs Cartwright Shortly before leaving Bickerstaffe Primary School for pastures new, Charlie Sweeney and Olivia O’Brien caught up with Mrs Cartwright inside her busy office to ask her everything they could possibly think of asking her.

by Charlie Sweeney and Olivia O’Brien

What is your favourite animal and why. Also do you have any pets? My favourite animal is a dog and I don’t have any pets but we used to have a boxer dog called Molly. What is your favourite car and why? My favourite car is a Range Rover Evoke. What did you do before this job? I worked for Lloyds TSB for 27 years. How long have you been in this school? Nine years in May. How many children do you have? Two boys called Harry and Samuel. What do you do in your spare time? I don’t have any spare time, I am always in work. What do you like about this job? I like working with children and no two days are the same. If you could take three things to an island what would they be? I would take a big book, sun cream and a comfortable bed.

What is your favourite restaurant and what is your favourite meal from there and why? Piri Piri and Piri Chicken from there. Do you prefer a cold holiday or a hot holiday and why? Hot, hot, hot, every time because I am really good at sitting in the sun. What is your favourite pair of high heels? Too many to chose from, I like them because I am told they are slimming and it is worth a try.

Game on

In July ‘Team Bickerstaffe’ represented school at an Olympic Games event, organised by the West Lancashire School Sport Partnership (WLSSP) at Edgehill University. With only weeks left until Rio 2016 in Brazil, it was a great opportunity for pupils to take part with other schools.

Along with sport based activities there was a choir, a production and showcasing of different countries from around the world. Bickerstaffe also brought back gold, thanks to Keisha Scott with her great victory.

On Monday 29th February Class 4 went to Min-Y-Don. We had to wait for the bus which was quite a while but finally it arrived. We waved off our mums and dads which was quite emotional for most of us.

HAVE I PACKED MY WATERPROOFS?

We had a stop off at Bala Lake for lunch and we had an amazing view. We got there, it was a really long drive and it took even longer on the way back. We were all very tired when we got there. The week went really quick, it was like it was over in a flash. When the week was over we all had mixed emotions because we were going to see are mums and dads, but also we were sad because we were going to miss the instructors.

Bickerstaffe celebrate World Book Day In March it was World Book Day and everyone in school dressed up as their favourite character from a book. It was really nice for all the children to dress up and great when everyone got to walk down the special blue carpet and see each others’ costumes and find out which book they were from. A pupil from Year 4 dressed as a fairy and she looked brilliant in her costume which she had made herself. Her wings were made from rolled up newspaper and she was called the ‘book fairy’. We held Book Day to celebrate reading because in our school we love to read. Mrs Smith dressed up as Gangster

Granny and looked amazing. Mr Draper and Lottie, from Year 5, were both dressed as the Oompa Loompas, characters from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and looked so funny. Remember always read, even if you only read one page it’s fun! Class 4

GIRL POWER by Charlie Sweeney and Ruby Phillips

On International Women’s Day, in March, Year 6 girls took time to reflect on the women who inspire them the most. Here is what they said:

“Katrina Hart, a British athlete and paralympian who visited our school. Even though she has a disability she carries on, never gives up and doesn’t moan. She makes exercising look easy and encourages others to do more and not just grow up watching TV all day.” Emily

“Loretta Legge, a professional dancer teacher, because since I was two years old she has taught me to dance which has inspired me to teach pupils in my school.” Isabella

“Our mum, because she does everything for us and when we grow up we hope we can do the same for our kids.” Charlie “Bethany Hamilton, an American surfer, because a few years ago her left arm was bitten off by a tiger shark while she was surfing but she didn’t give up on her dreams. She carried on surfing and hasn’t given up. Bethany also bought out a movie you can watch called ‘Soul Surfers’.”

New female emoji’s By Ruby Phillips and Charlie Sweeney

FACT 82% of girls use emoji’s every day

“Libby Stout, an American professional soccer player who plays for Liverpool Ladies, because she inspires me to play football and I believe football isn’t just a sport for boys.” Harley

Before May this year there was only a princess and a bride emoji to represent girls. On World Emoji Day in July Google launched 13 new emojis showing a greater range of female careers, such as doctors, scientists and engineers. What do our teachers and girl pupils think?

“It could inspire children to want to be one of these business women. It is also great to see women, and not just men, doing work!” Miss O’Kane “I think it’s better because there were only men. Now if you are going somewhere, like maybe to work with your mum, you can use an emoji to show people what you are doing and where you are going” Ruby Phillips

MEET THE MOTLEY CREW

By Lauren Speakman and Charlie Sweeney • Mrs James

Mr Draper 1. My funniest moment at Bickerstaffe School was when I was playing a doubles tennis match against Rueben Warwick (Y3) and Jessica Ball (Y5). Mrs Smith was my partner and from the start of the match she needed the toilet! It was the best she has ever played; we won the game. There’s a tennis top tip – don’t go to the toilet before a match you will play much better! 2. I began life at Bickerstaffe as a supply teacher, covering for Mrs Bell. I started in January 2012 and I was welcomed by all the staff, children, parents and friends of the school. I loved my time and was sad when I had to leave. To my delight I received a phone call from Mrs Hall (May 2013) asking me if I would come back and teach at Bickerstaffe. I jumped at the chance as Bickerstaffe, in my opinion, is the best primary school around. Also, my dad and granddad were pupils at Bickerstaffe.

Me and Mrs Teachen got a bucket and tried to catch the mouse by placing the bucket on top of it but, the mouse was too quick and we ended up running all over the place trying to catch it. Eventually we managed to chase it towards the outside door. So funny! 2. I saw a job in the newspaper and decided to come and have a look around. All the staff and children seemed to be so friendly that I thought it would be a lovely place to work and I was right!

1. World Book Day when Mrs Smith had a day off and Gangster Granny came instead! 2. In the words of Sophie Briscoe “It’s because I’m here!” when I came for my interview I instantly felt welcome and could feel the warm, friendly atmosphere.

My mum has always been my inspiration to me, she has the philosophy that you should always do your best, not to worry, be happy and to treat everyone as you would want them to treat you. I think the world would be a happier place if we all followed these simple rules.

Well done!

A dream ticket

Fantastic summer finale To celebrate 400 years of Shakespeare the junior summer production this year was “Dream On”, an adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The school’s outdoor gazebo was transformed into a theatrical stage with stunning hand-painted scenery as a backdrop. Families and friends enjoyed a superb performance packed with comedy, memorable music, stunning vocals

and great acting. The course of true love may never run smooth, according to Shakespeare, but this roundabout of love was a showstopper from start to finish! Refreshments, including a BBQ, organised by the school’s PTA ensured that guests enjoyed another fantastic finale to a wonderful school year in the grounds of Bickerstaffe School.

Gravity Falls By Luke Clansey Luke – reviewer – “Fell off my seat and had a tear in my eye” In my opinion Gravity Falls is the best TV show ever because of the unexpected events lurking around every dark, mysterious corner. In this amazing series of events there’s always the local twins – Mable and Dipper Pines – who find a way to stop the evil in their town. In this series there are quite a lot of characters, so let me name some of them who appear throughout the show: Bill – the evil being of pure energy, who is from a different dimension. Fiddleford Macgugget – an old man … doesn’t seem like he could save the world or does he? (Old Man Macgugget). They live in a local town in their uncle’s house, in the forest, in a shop called the Mystery Shack owned by their great uncle (Stanford). This series is set in the summer holidays but how will they react when they have to go home? Watch and find out!! Who should watch this show? Boys and girls 7+ When: Disney XD 5pm weekdays Funniest Character: Mable Phrases: Trust No one Best episode: Weirdmegeddon – the end of the series or is it?
