Christmas Cracker Run Bickerfold Challenge gets festive •
Words by Elliot Warwick •
On Wednesday 5 December Bickerstaffe School ran the second Bickerfold Challenge cross country run in Southport. The race was against Pinfold School but with different children running for each team. There were 30 runners in total and it was a distance of 2.2 kilometres. As it was the second race of the series some children achieved personal best times which were a great achievement. Reuben and Olivia from Bickerstaffe improved their times along with Emma, Harry, Taylor, Joe, Keira and Grace from Pinfold. Winning the junior race for a second rime was Elliot Warwick from Bickerstaffe School and also bringing it home once again for Bickerstaffe School was Olivia O’Brien for the infants. No pressure then for the next race? It was a really cold day and as the runners set off into the sunset dressed as mini Santas and reindeers it was a great sight to see. Once again Mrs Teachen had put together fantastic goody bags which all the children couldn’t wait to open and it was beaming smiles all round when they pulled out real running medals!

Tour of Bickerstaffe Cyclists come to town •
Words by Alex Brogan and Jessica Burgess •
On Monday 10 September there was a special road cycle race called the ‘Tour of Britain’. The race involved cyclists racing from Nottingham all the way to Knowsley Safari Park and included Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins. As a special treat pupils were allowed to go and watch the race as the cyclists sped through Barrow Nook. Some children went home first and their parents took them to see the race whilst other pupils were walked from school the one mile route down the road to watch. Before and after the cyclists went past lots of cars including police and other official vehicles passed by and everyone got really excited. The only thing higher than all the banners we were holding up were our voices as we eagerly awaited the arrival of the real cyclists. Just as everyone became a little bored of waiting suddenly a car with a cycle on its roof came past. The next moment happened in a flash as about 200 cyclists zoomed past and were gone as quickly as they had arrived. It was a really colourful sight with their different coloured shirts. It was truly amazing to watch and parents along with pupils had great fun enjoying a moment in history for Bickerstaffe.

Tag Trauma Schools take part in tag rugby games •
Words by Isobel Housley •
On 16 October a group of pupils from class four went to Ormskirk Rugby club to take part in a tag rugby tournament. The schools that took part included St Johns, Pinfold and Town Green. After five games Bickerstaffe had won two, lost two and drew one. Great job guys! With that score we got into the semi-finals but unfortunately had to pull out of the comp due to injury. Although we got a nice surprise when one of the schools old rugby legends Matty Webster came to the game to support some of his rugby pals, so not all was lost. Isobel Housley who has competed in all seven tag rugby games, said: “The whole experience was amazing, just seeing so many schools gathered together to play...tag rugby!”

Relay Rush
Teams compete to win race •
Words by Isobel Housley •
A composite relay is a race with four pupils representing each year group from juniors. There were eight pupils from Bickerstaffe School, one boy and one girl from each year. All schools converged at Ormskirk High School field to compete in a series of relay races. The course was long and you had to have your wits about you because of the number of teams. The start always has tussle and bustle which can make it difficult to get into your stride pattern. Both teams performed well despite a hugely competitive field and showed real determination in their races. Demonstrating great relay technique the baton exchange between each pupil was seamless and running club practise certainly paid off for some of the team. The relay was once again a good experience for all the children and a wonderful opportunity to meet other local schools and compete in a really exciting race.

Question time for Olympic athletes at Liverpool’s town hall •
Words by Isobel Housely and Lawrie O’Brien •
On 21 September the reporters Isobel Housely and Lawrie O’Brien went to Liverpool’s town hall to interview Olympic and Paralympic athletes. A really exciting occasion was made even more exciting when we arrived at the same time as bronze medallist Beth Tweddle and fellow gymnasts Hannah Wheelan and Rebecca Tunney. To be in a building like a palace and a room with Dan Highcock, wheelchair basketball star, was fantastic. There was red carpet all the way up the stairs, a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling and a gold banister which went on forever and it felt epically amazing. We interviewed everyone from paralympian athlete David Devine to Natasha Jonas who made history when she became the first ever British female boxer to compete at an Olympics. The size of hepthathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson was unbelievable, she must be six foot! Following all our questions to the athletes the mic was turned on the two of us when we got interviewed by Radio Merseyside.

Food Glorious Food Words by Jessica Burgess
An autumnal feast at Bickerstaffe food festival
Jessica Burgess went along to this year’s food festival with her camera and notebook to capture the day. The festival took place in October this year at Moss House Farm and after a week of rain the sun finally arrived as stallholders set up for an eagerly awaited day of trading. Fudge Heads stall was run by an enterprising team of pupils, Faith Currie, Thomas and Sophie Ralfs with Lawrie and Olivia O’Brien. Stallholders the previous year they thought the day was amazing and loved selling their homemade fudge. A visitor to the festival, Pam Burgess said: “My favourite stall was the giant pie shop and I’ve really enjoyed buying lots of different food”. With cheese, bread, tasty soup, delicious cakes and so much local produce, all from Lancashire, to taste and for sale. A great day was enjoyed by everyone.

The Bickerfold Challenge •
Words by Lawrie O’Brien •
On 12 October behind Dobbies Garden Centre in Southport it was the first race of the Bickerfold Challenge in a series of six races in total. The race was against Pinfold School as they are a nearby school who also have a running club and they are a small school too. In total there were 30 runners with 16 children from Bickerstaffe School competing. The course was winding with some up and down parts to it and was a whopping 2.2 kilometers long. Elliot Warwick won the juniors race with a time of 8.31 mins and Olivia O’Brien won the infants race with a time of 12.15 mins and overall Bickerstaffe School held the top 11 places. It was a great event with proper race numbers pinned on our tops, race marshals and a pace setter at the front. As each runner crossed the line the spectators cheered and our times were recorded. Just like in all professional races we also each got a fantastic goody bag with a medal, running top and lots of other cool stuff.

Kieran scoots to victory On 10 December a very special boy won an Olympics Team GB BMX style stunt scooter. Kieran, a Year 4 pupil entered the Lancashire Council’s school competition to design a Christmas card. The aim of the game was to design the best Christmas card for a chance to win some fantastic prizes. There were seven prizes in total with the top prize being an Olympics Team GB racing BMX bike. Kieran was delighted with his prize and proudly walked through school clutching it in his arms. He says: “I did not think I would win, I was just in it for fun. Although I did it all by myself my mum and dad taught me how to draw. There was a slight worry along the way though as one of my pens ran out while I was making the card.”

was 200m freestyle. Oh my was I tired by the last race. As I swam the last race I glanced around to see where everyone was as I still had two lengths to go. I was gutted when I realised they had all finished two lengths ahead of me but I was not giving up as I knew by the size of them that they would probably win. My mum and everyone were cheering my name which made me swim faster. When I got out of the pool the timekeeper congratulated me on doing really well for my age and all the people watching were still cheering and clapping which made me feel really proud.
Dear Bradley Wiggins, We are very proud of you winning gold medals in the Olympics and winning the Tour de France. You have inspired lots of adults and children especially our school. In stage two of the Tour of Britain our school walked a mile to watch the race and then we walked a mile back. Everyone who watched you was so excited to see you on your bike. If possible please may Jessica Burgess and Alex Brogan meet you so we can interview you for our school magazine. We would have really good questions for you. We come from Bickerstaffe C.E Primary school. The reason why we would like to interview you is because we are in a group called the editorial team and we would like you to go in the school magazine called The Juicy Word . Surely, you’d love to be in our magazine because we give a magazine to everyone in the school and also our local community, you would be seen in the magazine by lots of people of different ages. Our school also has a club called BickerBickers where we learn to ride bikes and someone in our school could be as famous as you perhaps in the future! We hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes, Jessica & Alex P.S We hope you get better very soon after your accident!

EGG’SELLENT HENS Bickerstaffe school eggs By Alex Brogan and Jessica Burgen
BWWRK KKK!
Hens show off their home
As summer term finished we were all looking forward to getting the first Bickerstaffe school eggs. The hens got off to an egg’sellent start in September and didn’t disappoint. Pupils have been finding eggs on a daily basis since as the hens are very good layers. At the food
festival in October Class 4 baked cookies using the school eggs that the hens had laid. As the eggs are not fertilised we know we will not be getting any new chicks, however getting eggs every day that we can eat is brilliant. Children having school dinner have been able
to have a little taste as the eggs have been used in puddings. The hens are also getting bigger every day and have really settled into their hen house, designed and built by Mr Hall and Class 4 in July. It seems a long time ago that our hens were still in their eggs. They follow you around and have beautiful colours. Mr Hall has set up a Young Engineers club who have once again been very busy and also enterprising. The first hen feeder has been made to order and more are on their way. Hens in school rock and they all now have new names following the competition held at the food festival. They really are part of the family.
A gift from Bethlehem Earlier this year Kim O’Brien went on very special visit to the Holy Land during a trip to Israel. It was a wonderful experience and journey to the very heart of the Christian faith. She visited many amazing sites including a tour of Bethlehem with a visit to the Church of the Nativity. With a Christian tour guide Kim met local Palestinians living in Israel and was able to hear their stories and discuss with them life in that part of the world. For over 2000 years Christians have enjoyed a continued presence in Bethlehem and still living there today are many denominations of the Christian faith. The olive tree is a native
tree of the Holy Land and holds much religious significance to Christianity. Made from olive wood there are numerous ornaments and gifts for sale in Bethlehem. Keen to support local Christian
Palestinians Kim visited one of the many shops in the town. On her return Kim presented to Mrs Hall a small Christmas tree ornament of Joseph and Mary made from olive wood.
Stepping up to make a difference New parent governors appointed By Lawrie O’Brien and Isobel Housley As a new chair of the governing body, Paul Wilcox, takes over from John Mercer there are two new appointments to the board also. Elected as parent governors both Alan Ralfs and Lucy Bray take up their new positions with enthusiasm and excitement. Isobel Housley and Lawrie O’Brien chatted to them about their hopes for their new roles. Both parents are really interested in helping to run the school and to support Mrs Hall as headteacher. Following nominations being put forward Alan and Lucy heard the news of their appointments from Mrs Hall. Alan says: “I am looking forward to the role and hopefully making a difference, helping school and working as part of a team.” As residents of the local community both parents already enjoy being actively involved in different activities and see the role of a school governor strengthening those links. School governors have a wide range of responsibilities and the position brings a requirement to be committed to working in the best interest of children’s education. Asked about the amount of papers to be read, meetings to attend and the extra work involved Lucy says: “Sometimes I may have to miss some of the things I normally do like putting my children to bed, however by offering my time and energy I am looking forward to making a valuable contribution to school.” If being approachable, open and enthusiastic are requirements we think Alan and Lucy will make great parent governors as they were very willing and really good interviewees!

BOOK CHALLENGE Take a photo of an extreme place whilst reading a book
Where is the most extreme place that your child has ever read a book? Whether it is up a tree, on top of a mountain or stood on their head, school
want your photos! Your holiday challenge is to take a picture of your child reading somewhere extreme and send it in with your child after the Christmas holidays. This is part of a continuing commitment to develop children into enthusiastic lifelong readers. School will run the competition for the most extreme places reading has taken place. A display will also be made from the photos. Obviously, keep safe (Mrs Bell doesn’t recommend reading in the jaws of a crocodile!) but she is really looking forward to seeing who in school has such a passion for reading that they have to do it anywhere and everywhere!

Pitch perfect
By Lawrie O’Brien At the start of December a new playground was built in school as an addition to the existing one and to provide extra space for children to play outside. Goals have already appeared at either end of the
new playground transforming the space into a fantastic new football pitch for girls and boys to play their favourite game. It’s not all football though as parent, Jon Ashburner, has installed outdoor speakers
allowing music to be pumped into the air. With ‘Gangnam Style’ booming around the playground an impromptu rendition of the infamous dance quickly caught on during lunchtime. It was very
funny and got everyone moving. Olivia says: “The field is great especially now we have had some snow. We can jump over mounds of grass and run quite far. I like it because we have lots of space and it’s a really nice environment.” The new playground is good because now infants and juniors have some of their own space and there is a much bigger area that everyone can play the games they want to as it is more zoned with a dedicated football pitch. The extra space on the field, since the fence has been removed, is a really big hope for the summer with lots of exciting ideas of how it can be used.

Mr Hall
We catch up with our awe-inspiring science teacher as he talks about explosive experiments and his favourite rocketing rock band. •
Interview by Alex Berimbau and Elliot Warwick •
What is it like doing all of these experiments? I love doing experiments; I have always enjoyed finding out how things work and it’s great fun too. What inspired you to become a science teacher? I used to train engineers in electronics and I thought it would be even more rewarding if I taught children. Is it true that sometimes you pinch food at home that Mrs Hall is keeping for a special occasion? Yes, it is true because I’m greedy! How is it being married to the head teacher? Not easy, because I don’t like being told what to do! What’s your best record in running club? My best record was finishing cross country in front of Elliot when he was ill! What’s your favourite experiment? The red cabbage indicator because you get lots of colours with acids and alkalis.
What do you do out of school? Cycling and scientific experiments, testing out more stuff. What is your favourite hobby? Skiing because it’s fast, it’s outside and the air is fresh and clean. What is some of the equipment that you mostly use? In my science cupboard are lots of things such as test tubes, conical flasks and microscopes. Has the weather ever ruined an experiment? Yes, it has because rain stops the Van de Graaff generator (which creates static energy), from making giant electric sparks. What’s your favourite music and musician? American rock band Pearl Jam are one of my favourites. When you are looking after the school hens has one ever pecked you? Lots of times but not deliberately and it doesn’t hurt too much. Have you ever had any other job? Electronic design engineer.

Dazzling Performances Two winning Christmas productions By Sophie Ruddock The dazzling Christmas productions of The Innkeeper’s Breakfast and Away with the Manger took place on 13 & 14 December at Holy Trinity church. The infants and juniors have been practising their school play for four weeks. The infant nativity musical was about a very busy innkeeper whose breakfast is more important to her than anything else. One morning however she keeps getting interrupted by a knock at the door and then finally discovers the real cause of the disruption. All the cast performed brilliantly with every child getting on stage to sing, dance or say their lines. Issy, from editorial, took on one of the main roles in the junior production. A very funny and artistic girl she got the part of Bob and Joe Cottrell got the part of Bill. A hilarious story of two bungling burglars who have stolen jewels which are then hidden in the local school nativity manger. Bob and Bill have to dress up as Santa and his fairy helper but finally they are caught. The songs were very joyful and jumpy and the audience were in stitches at some of the jokes! All the children loved performing to the audience of parents, grandparents and visitors and can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Mrs Owen
We catch up with our Class 2 teaching assistant, as she talks about the last 20 years at Bickerstaffe School, her first job and her hobbies.
How has school changed during the last 20 years? The biggest thing that has changed is technology; we had chalk boards and not interactive white boards, tape recorders instead of CD players and no computers or laptops. What was better school then or school now and why? Probably now because of all the new technology. Who has been your favourite teacher to work with since you started at Bickerstaffe School? I have worked with a lot of teachers and liked them all. When I first started in KS1 it was Mrs Worthington then Mrs Pell, after that Mr Davies then Mrs Hall came. Mrs Teachen joined the school next and now Miss Thomson so I have been lucky enough to work with lots of different people. Is it a fun job and is it still fun 20 years into the job? Yes most of the time. I like my job, I especially enjoy helping children achieve in reading, writing and maths.
What is your best memory of your time at this school? I have a few but my best memories are the Christmas nativities, school trips to a lot of different places and watching the children at treat day. How big was school 20 years ago and how many pupils were there? There were three classes and about 60 children. Was this your first job? If not what was? No. My first job was at a big hospital called Northwick Park in Harrow, Middlesex, where I was a diet cook. What was school like when you started, was everything in the same place as it is now? More or less. Although there wasn’t the outdoor play area or the very recent fantastic playground and field extension. What are your hobbies outside of school? I enjoy swimming. I also like ballroom and sequence dancing with Mr Owen and I have just got a new baby grandson called Daniel. Do you live locally in Bickerstaffe? How would you describe living where you live? I don’t live in Bickerstaffe but not too far away in Simonswood. I live on a farm and I describe it like living in the middle of big field with a lovely view of the countryside.

Hotel Transylvania by Jessica Burgess and Alex Brogan
Skyfall (12a cert) by Sophie Ruddock My interview was with Lawrie who went to watch the new James Bond film Skyfall on the first day of its release. This is the best Bond film Lawrie has ever seen because he says it is all about the old ways and stays true to Bond. Daniel Craig plays James Bond and he delivers his lines with real expression and is very funny with great oneliners making him possibly the best Bond ever. It is action packed and full of specatular stunts including a thundering train crash that leaves the viewer on the edge of your seat. With 26
a new younger actor playing Q the film brings a change to previous films but still has the same clever gadgets that all secret agents need. The new baddy, Silva, a former agent turned vengeful computer hacker, Lawrie thought was a good character because in this film there is a real story behind him and so it makes sense to why he is bad. With komodo dragons fighting and some great action scenes the film gets Lawrie’s full approval and he would recommend it but not for younger brothers or sisters.
You are wondering what we are on about; yes we know it’s a silly name for a kids film. If you’re going to watch it you may find it a bit FUNNY! Perhaps you should be age six+ and you can watch it in 3D. This film is hilarious. You will laugh yourself silly. We interviewed Olivia after she went to see the film for her birthday and she has given the film a five star rating. It’s a very popular film and many people have been to see it. Why wouldn’t you watch this amazing film? We wouldn’t be surprised if after you have read this review you will go and see it. Some other people we spoke to about the film said that there were too many adverts and that in parts the film was

boring. However that is not the view of Olivia who said her favourite part was when one of the characters falls into a green blob. Even though there are monsters in the film they are funny and actually friendly. They are scared of humans to begin with but in the end a human changes their minds. The movie lasts for about one hour and a half. If you like funny films with funny people in them you will really like this film. There may be vampires in this film who don’t like humans at the beginning but love changes all that and you will laugh yourself all the way to the end of the film when vampire and human become friends. LOL. Overall it’s a great film.
