We asked them lots of questions from their favorite moment to their new high school.

Crowning Glory

World Cup Winners It’s a goal for the girls  Amy Crisp and Freya Ramsden shot to the top with Germany in the World Cup 2014 school sweep.

A great win for Germany, 1 – 0 against Argentina in the World Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro, was matched with a great win by the girls; showing football isn’t just a game for boys!

 Faith Currie was crowned Bickerstaffe Rose Queen July 11 at the Bickerstaffe Summer Fair 2014.

Faith, from Barrow Nook in Bickerstaffe, is a Year 6 pupil at Bickerstaffe CE Primary and will be starting St Bede’s Catholic High School, Ormskirk in September. She has looked forward to becoming Rose Queen since an early age having been an attendant many times.

A procession led by Faith began at Holy Trinity Church with her rose buds, Freya Ramsden and Jessica Ormesher along with attendant Aaron Alty and finished on Bickerstaffe Parish Field.

The ceremony was completed by Mrs Anne Owen who presented Faith with her crown to a delighted audience.

The Bickerstaffe Summer Fair was declared open, and thankfully the rain held off allowing another successful fundraising event for school and church to take place.

With vintage cars, a London red bus, traditional stalls, BBQ and refreshments it was a wonderful afternoon including a sneak preview of Dance Fever from Bickerstaffe pupils.

Dance Fever Delight Not so much Girls Aloud as girls alive with excitement when visitors to this year’s Bickerstaffe Summer Fair got an exclusive performance by Dance Fever!

The girls in Dance Fever this year were: Charlotte, Issy, Wiktoria, Olivia, Amy, Alex, Jasmine, Tace, Lauren, Keisha, Alicija and Faith. They were trained by Mrs Hackett week after week and their regular practise certainly paid off with a faultless performance. Dance Fever will perform again on stage at Ormskirk High School as part of a West Lancashire schools show.

Striking outfits with Union Jacks emblazoned on their leotards made sure the girls looked as good as they danced.

It certainly proved to be one of the highlights of the fair; enjoyed by all the spectators.

CATHEDRAL WELCOMES BICKERSTAFFE PUPILS A service of celebration for Year 6 children

 Have you ever been to the wonderful Liverpool Museum?

Well Bickerstaffe School can now add this to their list of places visited. On a warm, early summers day in July the whole school embarked on a wonderful trip to Liverpool city centre, home to the World Museum. Before we arrived at the museum we first visited the Walker Art Gallery, where we had a tour of the art on display. Following a colourful time studying paintings we climbed the steep stairs to the World Museum. From our arrival to early afternoon we searched the museum in every corner; because there was a competition to find an artefact from each of the 32 countries. There were five floors in the museum each holding several different artefacts.

There was everything from pocket watches to samurai swords to rockets!

“Walking around the museum was exciting: because you didn’t know what was around the corner. It was, however, also frustrating because on a few occasions we would be searching the cupboards looking for objects for minutes and minutes!” explained Faith.

From world class art to Ancient Egypt artefacts I believe the trip was really educational but also lots of fun and without a doubt I would like to visit again.

 Bickerstaffe CE Primary School Year 6 pupils attended the annual Diocesan School Leavers’ Service at Liverpool Cathedral on Tuesday 24 June.

The service was led by Bishop Cyril Ashton and during a period of three days the Liverpool Cathedral welcomed more than 2,500 primary school children.

The services are designed to help Year 6 children celebrate their time at primary school and look ahead to the new chapter of starting secondary school.

The service began with a fanfare sounded on the Organ to which Bickerstaffe Primary School Year 6 pupils, Faith Currie and Amy Crisp, proudly carried the school banner as part of a procession from the Well of the Cathedral through the Nave.

A wonderful service of prayers, readings and singing followed, culminating in a procession of thanksgiving for the time spent, by all the pupils in attendance, at primary school. Year 6 pupils, Alex Brogan, Isobel Housley, Wiktoria Wisniewska, Joseph Ormesher, Jacob Ashburner and Lawrie O’Brien took forward prayers they had written to hang on a special prayer tree, and a gift from the

school of money, to purchase a ‘Proclaimer’ an electronic device for delivering the Word of the Bible in a range of different languages, was received by the Bishop as a gift.

Jon Richardson, Director of Education for the Diocese of Liverpool said: “Schools really look forward to these services. It is extremely important to give our young people an opportunity to reflect on their life at primary school, and encourage them to look forward with optimism to the new challenges and experiences awaiting them.”

Mrs Hall, Headteacher of Bickerstaffe CE Primary School said: “Our visit to the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool is a wonderful experience for our young people. It marks the high point of their Spiritual Life, filling them with awe and wonder at the majesty of their surroundings. We are very proud of our Year 6 pupils and all that they have achieved; soon they will move onto high school, but in doing so they will leave behind a legacy. That transference of responsibilities to our current Year 5 will be symbolised by the giving of the candle, presented to them by the Bishop during the service.”

Bickerstaffe Games •

On Tuesday July 1 the Bickerstaffe 2014 annual sports day took place. The event consisted of nine activities including hurdles, penalties and the standing long jump. Each sporting challenge lasted five minutes and every pupil in each team had a turn.

The teams this year were based on an international theme: Bahamas, Malaysia, Ghana, India, Cyprus, Cameroon, Nigeria and Australia. After an enduring afternoon of competition in the sunshine Malaysia were declared the overall winners to the delight of Jacob Ashburner, team captain.

A lot of parents turned up for the occasion and had an enjoyable afternoon watching their children participate in each activity. Refreshments were served and picnics enjoyed by some on the grass.

The day before sports day we had studied the countries and had each made a poster about them. The winning team Malaysia proudly paraded their poster around the playground to a thunderous round of applause.

Baton relay reaches Bickerstaffe Words by Lawrie O’Brien During July, 56 schools took part in the West Lancashire School Sport Partnership’s, Commonwealth Games Baton Relay. Ormskirk High School pupils arrived with the baton along with Clyde, the Commonwealth Games mascot, to a huge fanfare of applause from Bickerstaffe pupils. It was Bickerstaffe’s turn then to travel to Town Green, Aughton for the next stage. The pupils snaked their way as they ran over the bridge and through the village of Aughton until they arrived at Aughton Town Green Primary School. The sound of cheer could be heard all the way down the road and a tunnel of children greeted Bickerstaffe for the pupils to run through.

The flag, baton and Clyde, the mascot, were exchanged with pupils from Town Green and Keisha Scott read our school’s pledge out to a delighted audience. We left as we had arrived, back through the tunnel with the sound of cheer not far behind.

WHAT A BLAST!

 The BLOODHOUND Project is a global engineering adventure, using a 1000mph World Land Speed Record attempt to inspire the next generation about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Since the beginning of this term Mr Hall has created a unique, high-technology project for school to bring to life STEM in the most

exciting way possible.

It has been a magnificent few months of fun and learning. Infant and junior pupils have finely honed in their car building skills and have looked at design, build and testing of cars. Construction of rockets and cherry pickers to test parachute systems have been just a few of the highlights.

A long tarmac run was created outside that was flat enough and long enough to test how fast the cars could travel. The pupils fired off their test cars with other children seeing if they could keep up with the car!

STEM has deifinitely been for everyone at our school this year and we wonder what Mr Hall will have planned for next year.

BAKE ON

 Pizzas, bread and party cakes have been on the menu at Baking Club this term, all under the careful and skilful supervision of Ms Barton. Every Tuesday after school the bakers have eagerly entered the hall to begin their extracurricular activity. When parents have arrived to collect their children delicious smells have wafted out of the door, closely followed by gifts of home-made cakes, bread and pizza. Ms Barton’s club has proved so popular that she kindly agreed to run it again to allow the children to carry on baking! Thanks Ms Barton!

A glorious celebration 170th anniversary an outstanding success

An ‘Art Exhibition and Cream Tea’ was held on July 11 to mark the school’s 170th anniversary. The local community along with parents came out in force as they gathered to enjoy a wonderful afternoon in glorious sunshine. The afternoon began with pupils taking part in traditional games before enjoying a tea-party on the grass. The Art Exhibition provided a wonderful platform to showcase paintings produced by the talented children.

Delicious homemade scones, strawberry jam and cream were served to the hungry guests before they relaxed to enjoy an ambitious programme of entertainment. Song and dance through the era began with a spectacular performance

by Class 4 of Clog Dancing. The children dressed in black with traditional red neckerchiefs, accompanied only by a solo violinist, stunned the audience in to silence with their dazzling display. Songs from the Music Hall followed along with Maypole and Samba dancing. The children all came together for a grand finale of the National Anthem, which received a huge cheer and applause from everyone.

Mrs Hall, said:” It was a wonderful afternoon with so many parents, friends and guests joining our whole school to mark this special birthday. To celebrate 170 years of education in Bickerstaffe together as a community, with the different generations in attendance, was truly magical and will be a lasting memory I am certain for us all. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff, children and parents for the hard work, effort and time that made such an event possible and also an outstanding success”

MAKING THE JUICY WORD GO ROUND

A productive day at Move Publishing

 On July 3 Class 4 visited Move Publishing Ltd; it is the office where The Juicy Word is produced along with some other amazingly detailed magazines.

The Move Publishing office is in Liverpool city centre and it took about one hour to get there on the mini bus.

The reason we went to Move Publishing was so that we could experience what it is like to work in an office and be able to learn some of the skills needed in publishing,

journalism and design. All of Class 4 loved seeing how a proper office works including swivel chairs! It was a new learning curve for some: learning how to work Macs. Isobel Housley said: “I liked seeing what a proper office was like; they have BISCUIT BREAKS!” Even children not in the Editorial Team felt inspired to join the team. Everyone was keen to do some more writing and designing!

Along with designing the front cover of this edition and a couple of fashion pages,

 This year we are saying farewell to Mr Ballard and Mrs Hackett as they move to new schools. Although it is bye bye it is also good luck! Mr Ballard is going to become the Headteacher at St Peter’s Primary School in Mawdsley and Mrs Hackett is off to teach a new Year 1 and 2 class at St Mary’s and St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School in Bamber Bridge, near Preston. It is great that she will have three Polish children in her class, which

Overall Class 4 had a fantastic time and hope that the next Year 5 and Year 6 might be able to experience the same. The current Year 6 had such a great time they wish they could visit again but they will be moving on to high school in September and leaving Bickerstaffe and the world of The Juicy Word behind.

We are set for changes in September too, with Mr Draper becoming the new Class 4 teacher for Year 5 and 6 pupils. The new teachers joining our school are Miss O’Kane as Class 3 teacher and Mr Grice as Class 2 teacher.

We will miss Mr B and Mrs Hackett but hope they both come back to visit.

How do you fit a jumbo jet in a coke bottle?

That sounds like an idea for Mr Hall’s science lesson.

How long have you worked in Bickerstaffe School?

In September I will have worked here for seven years.

Helens with my mum, dad and my older brother. Both my grandmothers lived close by so I saw a lot of them. We used to go on holiday to the Isle of Man. Happy days!

Do shadows get darker as they get bigger and why?

Opaque objects make dark shadows. If an object is moved closer to the light source, the shadow gets bigger.

What has been your most embarrassing moment in Bickerstaffe School?

It’s got to be the taking part in the final of Wimblestaffe, but we won’t go into that!

What is your favourite subject?

When I was at school I enjoyed English and art.

What is the biggest mistake you have ever made?

Telling Mrs Vaughan that she hadn’t made much of an effort when she came to school dressed as ‘The Queen of Hearts’ for World Book Day, (she knew I was joking – her costume was amazing).

What is your favourite hobby?

I enjoy gardening, baking, art and craft activities and spending time with my family.

What is your favourite moment whilst in Bickerstaffe School?

My favourite moments include preparations for Bickerstaffe productions. I love making scenery; props etc. and seeing a performance come together. I’ve also made some really good friends since working here.

What was your childhood like?

I had a lovely childhood. I grew up in St

What is your favourite type of film?

Horror, action, comedy, romance or sci-fi?

Well, my favourite actor is Dustin Hoffman, so I enjoy whatever type of film he is in.

I also like rom-coms.

What is your favourite subject to help children in Class 4?

I work in Class 4 and Class 3. My job involves taking spelling groups, intervention groups, one to one help and general support in both classes.

Why do you like going to the rugby games?

I haven’t been to any matches for a while but I like to keep up to date with how St Helens Rugby Club are playing. I get a lot of stick from the Wigan supporters in school (Mr Draper!), especially when Saints are not at their best.

What is your favourite song?

That’s a difficult question, there’s too many to choose from! The song I never get bored with is, ‘Go Your Own Way’ by Fleetwood Mac.

A tournament to remember •

Team Bickerstaffe travelled to Edge Hill University in June to compete in the SUPSSA Quad Kids athletics event.

Proudly wearing their yellow T-shirts they gathered trackside bursting with excitement and eager to go.

The pupils from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 took part in 50m, 400m and 600m track races as well as the standing long jump and vortex howler throw. Teams from each year group attracted points based on their individual positions which were added together to make a team total.

The atmosphere was superb with pupils attracting cheers all around the track, as parents pitched themselves in strategic places to support all the children. As the sun shone down pupils took it in turns to deliver shining performances across all four events and collected enough points to come third in the small schools category.

Bickerstaffe are crazy for sport!!! The editorial team have chosen the best of the best sports people. There are lots of mixed genders and ages. These fun, fantastic cards can keep you occupied for at least one hour. Why not cut them out and play. The Sport Snap collectable Top Trumps will return in the next issue (The Christmas Mag).

LAST MINUTE DASH TO PRESTON A new race on the sporting calendar

Crazy Loom Bands

 Pupils lined up and got ready to run up at Mrs Teachen’s school, Brindle Gregson Lane Primary, towards the end of term. A last minute fixture was arranged by Mr Draper to allow another opportunity for children to race.

Great performances were put in by everyone as they completed five laps of the course, with Reuben Warwick crossing the line first for the boys.

Lottie Brighouse-Jones put in a sterling run to finish first for the Bickerstaffe girls.

Following the race Mrs Teachen kindly gave everyone a quick tour of her new school with Bailey Olverson commenting how much he loved the playground. The children were excited to have the opportunity to look around a different school and peek in other classrooms.

Future races between both schools are definitely planned for next term.

 Heard about Loom Bands? Sure you have, they are the new fashion of 2014. Our school playground and classrooms have been under invasion from coloured bands for the last few months.

The Rainbow Loom is a plastic device for turning small rubber bands into jewellery.

We have been using looms and our fingers to weave all kinds of things such as bracelets, necklaces and charms.

There are different designs including the ‘fishtail’, the ‘dragon scale’ and the ‘inverted hexafish’ You will require a loom, a hook and your fingers.

More ambitious ideas in our school have been animal shapes such as a snake and pen/pencil top cases. They are lots of fun and you can make loads of shapes and rainbow colours.

I wonder what the Victorians would make of them.

Perhaps Loom Bands are to us what marbles were to them?

So come on make Loom Bands, they are great!

Sprint around Scarsbrick •

At Scarsbrick Hall in June, our running team took part in a gut-wrenching cross country around the school grounds. All of the team did remarkably well!

Scarsbrick Hall is an independent school located in West Lancashire.

Year 3 and Year 4 girls ran twice along with Year 5 boys.

The pupils are already looking forward to competing again next year.

Time for a treat Annual celebration of traditions •

Pupils stepped out from the school gates in June to begin their annual Morris Dance up Hall Lane.

To the wonderful sound of the Maghull Wind Orchestra they danced their way onto Bickerstaffe Parish Field.

A large crowd of parents, teachers and the local community gathered around the Maypole to watch each year group perform their dance. As always, each routine delighted the audience and demonstrated the hard work and practise of everyone involved.

With some energy left, the children’s races took place on the specially drawn out track with some serious competition to cross the line first. The small fair gave children an opportunity to have some fun afterwards, spending their special Treat Day gift and prize money, while parents relaxed in the sunshine enjoying tea and cake.

Mrs Doherty The two new editorial team members, Mia Wainwright & Nadia Sloane put Mrs Doherty through her paces with lots of detailed questions. Find out how they got on with their first big interview.

What was your first job It was working in a retirement home.

What was the name of your school?

I came to this school, Bickerstaffe!

Do you like working at Bickerstaffe School Yes, I love working here with all of the children. I’ve been here 10 years.

What are your children’s names?

Mark and Laura.

What is your favourite colour?

Blue.

What do you do when you go home after work?

I walk my dog, look after my mum and dad and go shopping.

What was your favourite lesson at school?

English and French.

Do you drink coffee or tea?

Coffee.

You mentioned walking your dog, what type of dog is it?

A cocker spaniel called Moll.

Did you like school and why?

Sometimes I did. I especially liked playing with my friends.

Are you married?

Yes. My husband’s name is Ian.

Were you good at maths?

Unfortunately no.

What is your favourite food?

Shepherd’s pie or chicken salad.

Do you have a favourite book?

I like Harry Potter, but the story I like most is Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

What sports do you like?

I enjoy badminton.

What is the best part of playtime for you?

Definitely when we all get to go outside and play.
