FIVE STEPS TO WINTER-PROOF YOUR HOME Starting to feel the chill? As the cold-snap hits Britain once again this winter home owners’ thoughts are turning to the best way to winterproof their homes for the coming months.

While we layer up in thick coats, jumpers and gloves to protect ourselves from the bitter elements, have you spared a thought for how the winter conditions will affect your property? The winter climate of ice cold temperatures and heavy downpours can wreak havoc on your home. If you want a surprise-free winter without burst pipes, cold showers or shocking bills in the New Year follow our five simple steps to winter-proof your home.

1. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADEQUATE INSULATION Insulation is best described as a blanket for your home. If you think about how cold you would be without a blanket on your bed during the winter months this is a good reference point for the difference that insulation can actually make to the warmth of your home. Steve Tobin, director of Energy Save, a company which provides free insulation for home-owners, landlords and people on benefits says: “Loft and cavity insulation can save homeowners from £250 £400 a year in heating and electricity wastage.” What is the catch you might ask? This time there really isn’t one. The UK’s big six energy companies (British Gas, EDF, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE) have to meet EU carbon emission reduction targets by 31 December 2012. They can only do this by insulating Britain’s homes and if they don’t meet their targets they will be fined. By getting your home insulated you will in effect be getting a little bit back from energy providers. With all the extra money we are set to be spending on gas and electricity, getting a little bit back from providers doesn’t sound like a bad deal at all. Make sure you take advantage of the free funding while it’s still in place up until 31 December 2012. David Rigby, insulation operations manager for Warmer Energy Services (formerly Warmer Heating), a heating company based in Kirkby, says: “Once this funding ends a new government scheme called ‘The Green Deal’ will cover insulation costs for property dwellers who are classed as living in fuel poverty (when heating bills are more than 10% of household income). 2. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE BEST ENERGY DEAL As eye-watering energy price hikes are unveiled in the news, there has never been a better time for

home owners to ensure that they are getting the most out of their existing energy deal. According to uSwitch, there is currently a £300 difference between the cheapest and most expensive energy tariffs on the market. The impartial comparison service advises that you make sure you are on the right tariff to avoid paying over the odds. There are constantly new energy deals on the market so it is worth shopping around. There is also progress in the invention of new heating solutions which promise to lower your bills. Intracomfort heating uses infrared heat to save energy and create a comfortable heat at home. Patrick Richardson, chief executive of EConnect Energy and developer of the new system, says: “It sets a new benchmark in performance and efficiency, and can reduce energy bills by up to 70% - and because it is electricallypowered there are no local carbon emissions, unlike gas or oil-fired systems.”

3. GET YOUR BOILER SERVICED If you have ever been unlucky enough to experience a winter boiler break-down you will know how tricky it is to get dressed on a winter morning without any heating or just how long it takes to fill a bath with boiled water from the kettle. Hot water and heating are absolute essentials in the winter. But it’s a well-known fact that many boilers fail once the temperature drops and they are first switched on as they have been out of use throughout the summer months. People in the industry call it ‘The big switch on.’ You can lower the risk of your boiler breaking down by getting it regularly serviced. Problems with boilers can cost in excess of £250 - £350, whereas a boiler service costs from just £65. Gary Johnson, director of Assured Heating Solutions says: “Prevention can be the best cure and with the winters that we have been having the last few years it makes sense to consider getting your boiler serviced before the winter so you don’t get caught short. You could be saving yourself a good few hundred quid.”

Your property is most at risk if it is empty over the winter months as with no residents to spot leaks and turn off the water, burst or freezing pipes can completely destroy empty homes. This is a particular problem for landlords with vacant properties over the winter. It is recommended that empty properties have their water systems drained to prevent any unexpected problems. Full drainage of an empty property costs from £100 from Assured Heating Solutions to turn off the water and then switch it back on once the winter is over. If you are away for a week or two it is recommended that the heating is left on at a low temperature – around 15 degrees - to prevent pipes freezing.

5. CLEAN OUT YOUR GUTTERS And finally, one of the most overlooked winter jobs is clearing your gutters of leaves and blockages. Home-owners are advised to have their gutters cleaned once every six months, ideally before the winter begins as they can be more difficult to clear once the cold-snap takes hold. Kevin Burns, director of Gutter Cleaning Liverpool, says: “Badly maintained gutters can cause expensive problems for home-owners by causing damage to the property from the top down.” It costs from £40 to clean the gutters of a small terraced house but problems with gutters can cost double this amount to solve and costs can run into thousands of pounds for repair if gutter overflow water seeps into your property. Owners of properties in the leafier parts of Liverpool including Sefton Park and Wavertree suburbs should also remember that they will have to get their gutters cleaned more often than in other areas of the city because of falling autumn leaves. With your house winter-proofed and money well-saved you can sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that you are best prepared for whatever this season might bring your way.

4. PROTECT YOUR PIPES If our last few winters of snow, ice and frost are anything to go by, it is highly likely that icy temperatures are on their way. December 2011 was the coldest December in the UK since nationwide records began 100 years ago and as the country shivered, snow and freezing temperatures took their toll on people’s properties. Churchill Home Insurance saw a 45% increase in the number of claims caused by issues such as burst and frozen pipes during winter 2010 – 2011 compared with the previous winter. “The biggest problem we have in the winter time is frozen condensing pipes,” says Gary Johnson. There are a number of measures to prevent your pipes freezing including insulating the pipes or re-routing your condensing pipe internally. There are also new copper element products on the market which can stop pipes freezing. The copper elements link to a frost stat and heat pipes when the temperature drops below freezing. Formed in the 1980s, Liverpool band The Christians went on to achieve worldwide success including a UK number one album and several Top 40 Hits. Now 25 years since it all began the band are back with a new album. We caught up with lead singer Garry Christian to find out what fans can expect.

THE CHRISTIANS INTERVIEW WITH LEAD VOCALIST GARRY CHRISTIAN

INTERVIEW BY CHRISTINE TONER 2012 is your 25th anniversary in the music business – how has the industry changed since you first came on the scene? It’s changed beyond all recognition. I think a lot of the magic has gone out of the music industry - back then we all relished buying vinyl and CDs, a trip to a record store was an occasion as was watching Top of the Pops. I really do feel that things were better back then and wish sometimes that the internet hadn't killed that. Tell us about the new album Speed of Life? Much of it was recorded in my home out in the country and it’s quite a personal album reflecting on life’s rich tapestry and the speed at which life goes by. It really makes you sound like an old codger but you blink and it’s over. You’re also releasing deluxe editions of your first two albums ‘The Christians’ and ‘Colour’, why did you decide to do that? We didn't decide to do anything, that’s not our style, we were just approached by a small label called Cherry Red who specialise in back-catalogue who'd had some requests for re-release of our stuff. It was fun putting the deluxes together; I wrote a few quotes and dug out a few old press clippings. What was brilliant for me was finding a few

original recordings that weren't used on the original albums that we've been able to include in the deluxe editions. You were once described as “The Temptations in ripped jeans, producing gritty-centred songs in a sugary vocal shell” but for any reader not familiar with your music, how would you describe yourselves? I’ve never ever been able to answer this question. Even after 25 years I still can't pigeonhole the music, I just sing what sounds good. There's definitely a strong soul undertone to The Christians sound but it’s so hard to pigeonhole.

There's no real difference between Garry Christian and The Christians, it’s all much the same thing.

I don't really think about it. My plan has always been to have no plan and it hasn't served me too badly up to now. I would love to do a collaboration. I met Paul Harcastle, I'd love to do some work with him and James Morrison is a fan apparently he grew up listening to us - I wouldn't mind a duet with him. Finally, you took part in the charity recording of Ferry Cross the Mersey following the Hillsborough disaster, how do you feel about the most recent developments? What has been uncovered defies all belief, the families of those who were lost should be so proud that they've finally got to the bottom of this stinking rotten cover up. Funnily enough I dug out the single 'Ferry Across the Mersey' the other day and noticed The Christians were top billers above Paul McCartney and Gerry & The Pacemakers those were the days! I'd love to do another song for the cause. I had the pleasure of meeting Trevor Hicks (a key player in the recent Hillsborough events and father of two of the girls who were lost). He tried to chat to me after a gig but it was really hectic and it didn't click who he was. THE YACHT CLUB GETS A DELI TWIST The owner of the Franklins Deli chain has taken over The Yacht Club, formerly known as Liverpool Marina Bar & Grill. Adam Franklin, famous for his hot salt beef cuts in Franklins Deli in the Metquarter Liverpool, has brought his own blend of comfort food to the restaurant. The front bar at the

waterside venue has been upgraded and the new menu is going down a storm. Cinematic encounters THE HOBBIT From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of a trilogy of films adapting the classic by J.R.R. Tolkien.

‘Larger than Life’, is a new body of work by worldrenowned illustrator Quentin Blake. Blake is best known, both in England and internationally, as an illustrator of children’s books (most notably Roald Dahl’s), however over the past ten years his pictures have increasingly escaped from the pages of books, designing for fabrics, wallpaper, ceramics, and greetings cards as well as works for the walls of museums and hospitals. Cast will play a one off hometown show at the Liverpool 02 Academy next month. Cast formed in 1992, the brainchild of John Power, former bassist and backing singer for legendary group, The La’s. The band released their first album in 10 years, Troubled Times in March of this year. Expect to hear hits such as ‘Free me,’ ‘Walk Away,’ and ‘Flying’ as well as newer numbers. Speaking exclusively to Your Move, John Power said: “It always feels good coming back to our hometown. Its where we started as a band. It is where the whole idea began. Some of the faces in the crowd will have been with us all the way, so

Music Florence and the Machine 10 December, Liverpool Echo Arena Flame haired songstress Florence Welch plays the Liverpool Echo Arena as part of the Ceremonials tour. JONATHAN MORRIS Jonathan Morris made his name as Adrian in the TV series Bread. He went on to find further success on stage and screen. Now he’s back in Liverpool to star in the Christmas pantomime Sleeping Beauty at the Echo Arena. We caught up with him to find out about his favourite things...

Favourite thing about Liverpool The energy of the people and the city. It never sleeps.

Favourite thing about Christmas Watching someone play Father Christmas! It can be really funny with lots of jokes about the quality of the presents.

Favourite musician There are so many but I think it would be Don Mclean. He has written and played songs that will live forever, like American Pie and of course Vincent.

Favourite restaurant Mr Wings in SW10 London. Princess Diana made it famous because as a nanny, she worked opposite. You get a really mixed bag of people and there’s a great downstairs area with tropical plants. I am looking forward to finding a few Liverpool favourites too as I’ll be in the city for all of December and a chunk of January.

Favourite career memory My first night of the musical “La Cage Aux Folles” at the London Palladium. I thought it was a standing ovation, but then realised they were just leaving! JOKE! I have fantastic memories of the show and that night.

Favourite holiday destination Oh so many! However, if you pushed me then I’d say the islands of Indonesia. It’s so far and difficult to get to but once you get there it is amazing, so beautiful and dramatic.

Favourite film Favourite book ‘Memories, Dreams, Reflections’ by Carl Jung. I cannot believe how clever and understanding this man was. By the way, it’s not a light read but worth a go. I’m proud I managed to finish it!

Favourite food Pasta – of all shapes and sizes. I love Italian people too; they’re so funny and really lively. I do add a lot of spice when I make pasta, which is not to too many peoples’ liking.

The Bread Christmas special? No, my choice has to be a favourite of many people The Usual Suspects. The twist at the end is amazing. Wow!

Favourite item of clothing A shirt that a singer bought me when I was in The Rocky Horror Show in London. It’s black and tight (without being too naff) and washes easy. It has a reliable, ‘classic’ feel.
