Historic Home scHeme completed A scheme to create 40 homes in one of the UK’s oldest industrial villages has been completed, 26 years after the land was originally purchased by Riverside in 1987. The Bromborough Pool area was originally developed in 1854 as a village for candle factory workers comprising 49 grade-II listed buildings. The original houses are now joined by 40 new-build homes as part of a £5m scheme that included £1m in funding from the trustees of Ben Corless Sykes, a Lancashire architect and philanthropist who left money to be used for housing and garden developments in the area. The development was slowed initially by strict regulations governing the refurbishment of the homes, including ensuring
that the development was built without harming any protected trees, designing the three bedroom properties so that they would complement the existing village dwellings and sourcing bricks that are in keeping with the grade-II listed buildings. Jennifer Bailey, sales and new business negotiator at Riverside, says: “Riverside has worked really hard on this project for several years in order to get it on site. Everyone who has been involved in this agrees all the hard work has been worth with it. Confusion over solicitors’ success fees, warns expert ersonal injury claimants must ensure they understand agreements with solicitors before entering into them, warns a Liverpool-based industry expert.

Vanessa Lester, head of personal injury at KWP Solicitors, fears there is too much confusion following changes in the law on whether solicitors can deduct compensation from clients’ damages. Having recently received many queries on the matter, Vanessa has spoken out to set the record straight. She says: “The short answer is yes solicitors are now allowed to deduct a success fee of up to 25% of your compensation, but only if they have agreed that with you from the outset. The maximum a solicitor can deduct is 25%, however a solicitor does not
have to deduct this amount or any other figure for that matter.” She adds: “It has also been suggested to me that there is an added ‘incentive’ to a solicitor to obtain you more if they receive a percentage of your damages. This is nonsense. “Solicitors have a professional duty to act in the best interests of their clients and to advise their clients appropriately no matter what costs they will eventually receive. Therefore, if an injury claim is worth, say, £4,000, that is what it is worth. The fact a solicitor may be taking a quarter of that as agreed costs does not alter that position. “It is therefore important before entering into an agreement that you understand properly what that agreement is and how it may reduce the final amount you receive.” Your Move 65

Mayor visits new homes site The Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley visited the launch of a new housing development at Knowsley Lane in Huyton, where 84 new homes are being built. Councillor Brian O’Hare and his wife Christina O’Hare spent the day helping the construction team at the Gleeson development, the fifth of its kind in the Merseyside area. It is being developed to take advantage of the Help to Buy scheme, which allows people to pay just 5% deposit because of a 20% government loan for new build homes. The Mayor says: “I am delighted that Gleeson has chosen to develop yet another site in our region. Housing developers are reporting an “upsurge in enquiries” from first time buyers due to the introduction of the government’s Help to Buy scheme. The scheme allows buyers to take out 95% mortgages on newly-built houses by offering a 20% government-backed, interest-free equity loan on houses worth less than £600,000 and one developer has even reported as much as 50% of all new sales coming from firsttime buyers under the scheme. Countryside Properties says half of all demand for houses in its development at St Aidan’s Place, near the village of Cronton in
Merseyside, now come from people who are using Help to Buy to put down deposits of as little as 5%. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside Properties, says: “Countryside Properties has reported an upsurge in enquiries at its St Aidan’s Place development with 50% of the sales now coming from first time buyers who are realising that with Help to Buy a brand new three or four bedroom home at the sought-after development is within their reach. “Help to Buy really is making buying a home so much more affordable for people as the 5% deposit is so much more manageable.”
The late Georgian building, which was built in the 1830s and sits opposite Liverpool Cathedral in the Georgian Quarter of Liverpool, has been converted in to five luxury apartments and the final tenants have now moved in. Liverpool Housing Trust (LHT) teamed up with commercial property developer Atrium to restore the building and features include an elliptical stairway leading to the higher floors in the four-storey building and large sash windows with views over the city and River Mersey. Jayne Holley, Atrium general manager, says: “The whole team has worked really hard to produce a development that we can all be proud of. LEGAL WALK RAISES CHARITY FUNDS More than 160 walkers took to the city’s streets to raise money for the North West Legal Support Trust (NWLST) as part of the second annual Liverpool Legal Walk. Legal businesses from across the area took part in the 10K challenge on Thursday 19 September to raise funds for the NWLST charity. Among the participants were members of staff from KWP Solicitors, along with teams from Gregory Abrams Davidson, EAD Solicitors, Jackson & Canter and Kirwans. Other fundraisers included His Honour Goldstone, Recorder of Liverpool; Alistair Fletcher, president of the Liverpool Law society; Nick Johnson QC, representative of the Northern Circuit of the Bar; Claire Lindley,
chief crown prosecutor, Merseyside and Cheshire; and Charlie Mahoney, chair of Merseyside Junior Lawyer Division, who formed a judiciary team of lead walkers on the day. After beginning at the QEII Courts, the route took participants along the waterfront, past Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King and Lime Street station before ending at the Slug & Lettuce on North John Street. Money raised on the day will go towards providing access to free legal advice services including law centres, the Citizen Advice Bureau, legal advice agencies and other organisations for those who need it. The walk follows a similar event in Cumbria and the next location for the Legal Walk will be Manchester on 26 September.

For manchester-based band everything everything, 2013 has been a remarkable year so far. their second album, arc, stormed to the top five in the charts, and was followed by a run of live shows and festival performances including a top slot at liverpool sound City. as the four-piece gets ready to continue on the road with a string of october uk dates, bassist Jeremy Pritchard takes time out of his busy schedule to chat to your move.

Various phrases have been used to describe your music, from ‘art rock’ and ‘math rock’ to ‘alternative pop’. How would you describe it? We’ve never been good at answering that question because we never set out to pander to any one genre and we’re quite often accused of not knowing our own identity. We’re very aware of our own identity, it’s just it doesn’t fit into any one box. I think actually that makes us less successful on the whole, because music that really penetrates commercially tends to fit a mould. I just think we’re easily bored, and we’re suspicious of ourselves if we think we’re repeating ourselves. You’re often mentioned amongst current bands that are perhaps a bit different but 84 Your Move
have had mainstream success. Do you think there’s more of an acceptance or a demand to hear something different from bands now? Yeah, and that’s quite encouraging. I think when we started the band it was partly because we felt quite unrepresented by indie music in the country at the time, and the word ‘indie’ had cropped up over and over again in increasingly more meaningless ways over the last 10 or 15 years. By 2007 it was a way to sell jeans; it was a sort of fashion sense. ‘Landfill indie’ is actually a good phrase, I think, because it really did feel every bit as valuable as that. As we started the band, I remember watching the Mercury Prize and seeing Bat For Lashes and thinking wow, that’s great. Then Klaxons won it that year, and they’d made quite a cerebral, weird record. Foals were also emerging at the same time, and we found all of that quite encouraging. These things start underground and then become mainstream, and with the likes of Alt-J’s success and also
Django Django, they’re indicative of that. Where do you take your ideas and inspiration from? I once heard Radiohead saying they didn’t think they were particularly original, all they were ever trying to do was emulate their favourite bands and records and, in a way, we’re doing the same thing but inevitably you aim for something, you miss, and you end up with something that’s your own. We’ve listened to an awful lot of music and everyone came from different corners of the spectrum. Mike had studied jazz at a music college and then played a lot of different jazz stuff. John and I played together at university and he had this fascination, and still does, with American pop music, particularly from our teenage years with stuff like Destiny’s Child. It’s fascinatingly vacuous but in terms of production there’s really audacious ways of singing and use of rhythm, and the nimbleness of the vocals, so we’ve tried to apply that to the alternative rock mould, which had been our staple while we were

growing up with Nirvana and Radiohead. We just put it all in the pot really. You’re playing in Liverpool for the third time this year. What can people expect from your show? We’ve started, very tentatively, picking at three new songs but I don’t know whether or not they’re going to be involved. We’re basically trying to put together a set list where, if you’ve seen us a few times in the past, you’ll still be surprised. We may leave some of the obvious stuff alone, and I’m not saying we’re not going to play the hits because we will, clearly, but we’re going to make room for some stuff that has been neglected for a few years as well as celebrating the success of the latest record. Most importantly to us, we’re also spending quite a lot of time and money to make it look like a show. It’s not that we didn’t in the past, we always tried to get the lighting right and stuff, but we’ve really thought about it very carefully this time, thinking more about the theatre of it all. We’re going to have a few
elements we’ve never had before in that respect. Your first album, Man Alive, received a Mercury Prize nomination. What does that kind of recognition mean to the band? It’s a pat on the back from your peers in a way, and the establishment for whatever that’s worth. We certainly enjoyed ourselves, partly because of the enormous, ridiculous party we had on the night, but we just enjoyed being presented as an equivalent to people like PJ Harvey and Elbow who we really looked up to. It’s been a big year for Everything Everything, with the success of Arc and lots of live performances. What’s your highlight? Some of the festivals have really stuck in my mind because they just felt fantastic. We had really good shows at Latitude and Parklife, which was a bit of a hometown show, and we’ve had some great ones overseas which maybe we weren’t expecting. Personally, my highlight was probably going
to Australia because we’ve never done that before, and we had no preconceptions beyond having seen Home and Away. We didn’t know what it was like there or what the music scene was like and how we were going to go down and it was brilliant. All the shows sold out and we played a festival with about 5,000 people there and we really didn’t expect that kind of reception. What are the band’s plans beyond this tour? We’re going straight to Europe and supporting Foals for around three weeks as well as some other European dates until around the end of November. Then we’ll take some time off because we’ll be completely burnt out and insane by then to be honest. We’ll try to force ourselves away for a week or two before the end of the year to work hard in isolation on some new songs so that we can go away at Christmas knowing we’ve got some stuff under our belt. Then basically we’re just going to try to get straight into it next year. Your Move 85

uintessential Irish/Liverpool pub Shenanigans is celebrating its coming of age with a look back through its history, as well as a makeover to “move with the times”.

The popular watering hole has reached its 16th birthday and owners, the McDonald brothers, thought it would be poignant to find out more about the 77 Tithebarn Street site before it began its Shenanigans chapter. While the exact date of its founding isn’t known, they discovered the address first appeared as a pub on an ordnance survey
map in 1848. Then in 1862 it was found to be named The Revolving Lamp, before becoming The Rising Sun and being taken over by Walkers, like many Liverpool pubs from 1890. World War II left the area damaged and helped shape how the venue looks today – a solitary building standing proud yet leaning slightly! Since becoming Shenanigans in 1997, the pub has hosted events and parties and is popular with students and locals alike. Looking to the future, owner Conor McDonald says: “The first few years have been rocky and wild and whilst the fun continues, it’s time to grow up, put the best suit on - giving the external a much needed makeover - and move with the times.” A new coffee station and food menu has been launched at the new-look pub, which will host its first Irish Music Festival tune-up on 6 October. CamP and FurnaCe Greenland Street, L1 0BY Ever since Camp and Furnace opened up it’s been surrounded by plenty of hype. It’s set within Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle area, which is rarely mentioned without the words ‘trendy’ or ‘up and coming’; and has established itself as a prominent part of Liverpool’s cultural scene, hosting some of the quirkiest and most talked about events. Plus it makes its own brew ale with the help of Liverpool Craft Brewery and has proven popular among foodies. Needless to say, expectations were high when we went along to sample the latest menu. On arrival, we were seated in a secluded corner of the venue’s lobby bar, which is subtly decorated with features that fit in with its theme of bringing the outdoors indoors. A log burning fireplace was well lit across the room and, above our table, bicycle handle bars were mounted on wall plaques to look like moose antlers. We were also surrounded by bookshelves adorned with rows of Penguin books and
copies of National Geographic, but there was no time for reading as the menu posed far more pressing matters. As I glanced at the choice of starters (all £6), including several vegetarian options, I was drawn to the warm bacon tart with goats curd and caramelised garlic. Meanwhile my partner, who usually opts for olives to start, picked out the dish that included them. For a change though, they accompanied crispy polenta with smoked tomatoes and pine nuts. As we tucked in, my dining partner likened the good quality olives to the tasty fresh ones he had recently enjoyed on a Spanish holiday. The smoked tomatoes also added a nice jam-like sweetness to the plate. My warm bacon tart was full of flavour yet light, which left me confident I’d still have plenty of room to enjoy more of the menu. The varied mains selection left me spoilt for choice, but after being tempted by the aubergine schnitzel with lemon bulgar

wheat and yogurt (£9) I finally settled on the jerk pork, served with charred pineapple and cornbread (£8). Along with chillies dotted around the colourful, beautifully presented dish, the jerk pork was bursting with a fiery flavour. It was complemented by the pineapple which added to the tropical mix. Having never tried cornbread before, I was pleasantly surprised by its cake-like sweetness which also accompanied the heat well. My dining partner picked the confit duck leg with fat chips and red wine butter gravy (£12). The tender duck was cooked to perfection as the meat fell off the bone. Having cleared the plates on our starters and generous mains we were certain that the hype was to be believed, and Camp and Furnace had met our high expectations. The only disappointment was that we had no room left for any of the mouthwatering deserts on offer, which included a ginger and lime cake or a cherry pie, so we made do with a coffee to finish off the evening. Visitors took part in a tribute to Irish poet Seamus Heaney, led by poet Vona Groarke and Dr Frank Shovlin of the Liverpool University Institute of Irish Studies, and heard poems and traditional Irish music celebrating his life. Other activities included a talk by artist Tadgh Devlin, traditional Irish stories, abstract portraits and the Liverpool Book Fair. Music was provided by the Doyle Family, a North West band with an Irish traveller background, who play traditional uilleann pipes, fiddles, banjos and accordions to create an authentic Irish sound.
