editor’s Letter... In this latest Your Move, we bring you up to date on the biggest news and events from across the region’s property industry. Fresh from the sixth hugely successful Landlord & Property Show, we’ve got a picture special from this year’s event which is Merseyside’s only specialist landlord exhibition. Following the approval of major plans to transform the city’s former Heap’s Rice Mill into new homes, we also catch up with developer Elliot Lawless for an exclusive interview about the scheme. Plus, music star Professor Green has taken time out ahead of his Liverpool show to talk about his ongoing rise to success. And finally, congratulations to lucky Your Move reader Ken Fisher, who won our fantastic Hard Days Night Hotel competition. watch this space for more great giveaways in Your Move soon.

AS PLANS FOR A M DEVELOPMENT IN THE BALTIC TRIANGLE AREA OF THE CITY GET GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT YOUR MOVE CAUGHT UP WITH DEVELOPER ELLIOT LAWLESS OF ONE PARK LANE FOR AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW TO FIND OUT MORE

Part of the One Park Lane development
buildings and these will be available on the open market for sale. In the whole One Park Lane development, the scheme’s quality and location will appeal to the higher end of the market in terms of the rentals given its location and specification. We see families in the two and three-bedroom apartments and young professionals in the one and two-bedroom apartments. It’s going to attract a wide range of tenants, which can only be good for the development. YM WAS IT DIFFICULT TO MODIFY THE APPLICATION AFTER THE MILL WAS LISTED?
YOUR MOVE TELL US ABOUT THE NEW ONE PARK LANE DEVELOPMENT Elliot Lawless: The development will be across the two sites; the former Greenberg’s site on the corner of Park Lane and the former Heap’s Rice Mill site. The new plans include the refurbishment of the recently listed Heap’s Rice Mill and across the entire scheme 800 new homes and studios will provide one, two and three-bed accommodation with parking and commercial units at both. We are in negotiations with a serviced apartment operator for part of the scheme and a housing association for one of the blocks. YM YOU MENTIONED THE MILL WILL HOUSE LARGER APARTMENTS EL: The mill will comprise 123 units of character apartments, with duplex apartments on the higher floors. We’ve recognised over recent months the strong demand for properties in character
“
EL: When the mill was listed it changed the whole dynamic of the design. The reason it wasn’t included in the initial designs was purely down to viability. We had to start again and turn it round very quickly and we plugged the gap to ensure the scheme moves forward. Liverpool City Council was very responsive in that and it played a big part so it is owed a lot of credit for helping us to pull this round. There’s a team around us – Falconer Chester Hall is the architect and Turley’s is the planning consultant – and I can’t believe they’ve turned it round so quickly. We have to thank them for the role they and their associated consultants have played, as well as the responsiveness and the pragmatism of English Heritage. In the end I am happy with the outcome because I feel we’ve got the right result. The mill is a great asset to the whole scheme and it gives you that different character to the modern day apartments. This is a nice mix of modern and old and it’s aesthetically pleasing because of the character it adds.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SCHEME? Now that permission has been secured over the next couple of months we have to try to make the mill safe because it is in a bad state of repair and it is unstable. It has no roof so we are going try to secure as much as we can for the winter and we’ll be working hard with the architects and our quantity surveyors to prepare the tender. We’ll be speaking to all the top end companies who I think fit the bill for this type of development. Once we have a contractor and the prices are agreed we hope to be on site in Q2 of next year.
WHAT WILL THE SCHEME MEAN FOR THE BALTIC TRIANGLE? I’ve got other projects in the Baltic Triangle and I did recognise it as a special area some time ago. Our scheme is going to be great for the city as a glamorous gateway to the Baltic area from the Liverpool ONE complex. We recognised the potential of the area and we hope it will be the much-needed catalyst for more development in the Baltic Triangle. Heap’s Mill
The mill is a great asset to the whole scheme and it gives you that different character to the modern day apartments. This is a nice mix of modern and old.
AN HISTORIC LANDMARK Heap’s Rice Mill dates back to the 1780s. Joseph Heap founded his milling business on the site, next door to the famous Baltic Fleet pub, in 1778, though the present structure dates from the mid-Victorian era. Until around the 1880s Joseph Heap and Sons owned its own ships, known as the Diamond H line, sailing between Liverpool and Australia, via Rangoon and the East Indies. The company, which changed ownership several times, is understood to have been the first to establish a rice farm in Lower Burma.

HOME NEWS HERITAGE BID TO SAVE AT RISK ROPEWALKS SITES A £2.1 million fund could save 14 derelict buildings in the Ropewalks and Chinatown areas of Liverpool by turning them into new homes and shops. A report going before Liverpool City Council’s cabinet on 7 November is seeking approval to apply for a £1.5m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to save historic buildings on Nelson Street, Berry Street and Duke Street. If successful, the local authority will invest £300,000 and English Heritage is currently considering a contribution of £300,000 to the joint funding pot. Chinatown The council plans to convert the upper floors of at risk Georgian properties into nine individual residential units, while using the lower floors for commercial space. The scheme is based on similar investment in the thriving Seel Street and Campbell Square area of Ropewalks and could create up to 85 jobs, according to the report. The document says: “Without assistance, several historic buildings are likely to be lost as they are in such poor condition. Particularly vulnerable buildings include 52 Berry St, 28 Slater St, 151-155 Duke St, 118-122 Duke St, 37-43 Berry St.” The council and the HLF will pay £6,000 each to fund development surveyors in the first phase of the scheme to identify where grants are required and to refine the number of buildings that need support.

Radley Park
Homes in demand at Ellergreen site The final few homes are available at New City Vision’s Ellergreen development in Norris Green, after strong demand for the properties.
SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH FOR RADLEY PARK HOMES St Helens’ new Radley Park development has proven a hit with buyers after its opening weekend attracted a number of reservations for properties. The development, being built by St. Mowden Homes, is located adjacent to Waterside Village on Lowfield Lane and could see new buyers settling into their homes in time for the festive season. It will feature 161 family homes in total, with a range of two-bedroom mews, three-bedroom semi-detached and three and four-bedroom detached properties. The first phase of 39 homes is currently ongoing. Nick Whittingham, land director at St. Mowden, is pleased with the interest in Radley Park so far and says: “We already have several prospective buyers who, if successful in their applications, could be in their new homes by Christmas. I would encourage interested parties to visit the show homes to find out more about buying a home on this site, which is located in an area of St Helens that is currently undergoing a great transformation.” Homes at the site are available to buy using the government’s Help to Buy scheme, meaning purchasers will need a minimum deposit of just 5%.
The developer says a handful of three-bedroom family homes are on the market and Derby, Stanley and Sefton style houses are still available to home buyers. New City Vision says the homes are ready to move in before Christmas and has introduced a package deal including carpets, window blinds, washing machine, tumble dryer and a fridge/freezer. The deal includes legal fees paid and the freehold of the land to avoid paying annual ground rent fees. Louise Craven, the developer’s sales manager, says: “With Christmas fast approaching people may think that there isn’t enough time to move into a new home, so this is why we have put this package deal together to alert people that the process can be done in just a few weeks.” For more information about the Ellergreen development call 0151 256 0900. A show home is open at the Broad Lane site from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Ellergreen’s Stanley bedroom
ILIAD REVEALS GRENVILLE CENTRE APARTMENT PLANS Liverpool’s cabinet is expected to approve the sale of the Grenville Centre site to a developer, which plans to turn the site into housing and a community space. A report to cabinet has recommended the sale of the derelict centre and surrounding Grenville Playground, which has been closed since 2005. Developer Iliad, which has previously built student apartments on the adjacent St Michaels site, wants to buy the land from the council at an open market value (OMV) of nearly £250,000. If successful, it plans to develop a £6 million scheme to create 107 ‘key worker pocket apartments’ and ground floor community space that will be available to some organisations free of charge. Surveys conducted on behalf of the council in 2013 revealed the cost of refurbishing the existing building were “prohibitive”, leading to the possibility of a private developer purchasing the land. Iliad says if the council approves the sale of the land a planning application will be submitted and it will begin work within three months of the application being approved. It plans to complete the build within a year as long as a pre-let agreement is secured and says late 2015 is a realistic target for the development.

HOME NEWS BIDDING ‘DRIVES PRICES UP’ AT LATEST SUTTON KERSH AUCTION Competitive bidding is said to have boosted the sale prices of a number of lots at Sutton Kersh’s latest auction, with one highlight achieving more than £90,000 above guide price. The Grade II listed Olive Mount Villas in Wavertree attracted “fierce bidding” during the event, at Liverpool’s Marriott Hotel, having already drawn interest from buyers ahead of the auction. The vacant six-bedroom property on Mill Lane had been given a guide price of £125,000 plus,
which it exceeded as it finally went under the hammer for £217,500. Meanwhile, a vacant three-bedroom lodge within the grounds of the Grade II* Allerton Hall, which had been offered on the instructions of Liverpool City Council, also attracted a high price of £183,000 having been given a guide of £150,000 plus. With a total of 52 lots being sold at the event, generating proceeds of more than £3,700,000, Sutton Kersh’s auction manageress, Cathy Holt, says: “A real feature of the sale was the number of

HOUSEHOLDERS ADVISED TO SAVE ENERGY WITH WINTER HEATING MAINTAINANCE The UK may have experienced its warmest Halloween on record in recent weeks, but one Liverpool energy specialist is reminding householders to keep a check on their heating systems as the winter months approach.
A Westmount Park show home will go on display
Macbryde Homes will open a new show home at its Westmount Park development on Wirral Peninsula, as 12 new luxury homes come to market.
lots which attracted competitive bids and helped drive prices up. “We are also receiving numerous enquiries about available stock so I anticipate final proceeds to be closer to £4,000,000.” The auctioneer is now inviting instructions for its final 2014 sale, taking place on 11 December, and the catalogue closes on 14 November.
Simon Macbryde, chairman and managing director of Macbryde Homes, says: “We are extremely proud of the new homes at Westmount Park. The development is part of our Signature Collection, which means every home is built to the highest specification in a beautiful gated location that our purchasers would be proud to live in. “The very fact that we are continuing to build new homes in developments such as this one shows our confidence in the current property market and the opportunities for our purchasers to make sound property investments in the Wirral Peninsula.” The new show home is open for prospective residents who can book a personal appointment by calling 0151 652 8171.
STL Heating and Energy suggests bleeding radiators in order to distribute heat evenly, and carrying out regular system maintenance to ensure heating systems are working as efficiently as possible throughout the colder climates. Meanwhile, turning the heating down by one degree can save 10% on energy bills, according to STL, and only heating the rooms that are used every day will also be more efficient and cost effective. GREEN LIGHT FOR MOORFIELDS APARTMENTS Empty offices above Moorfields station will be converted into 136 studio apartments aimed at first time buyers and young professionals. Applicant Rich Link Investments will transform 2 Moorfields, after Liverpool City Council approved the scheme during a planning meeting. New apartments will be built across five floors of the building and communal facilities or residents. According to the application the upper floors 56 Your Move
of the building were originally earmarked for office space under the city’s Unitary Development Plan but the conversion presents “an efficient re-use for this former office building, which has been vacant for a number of years.” Architect Falconer Chester Hall designed the scheme for the 30-year-old red brick building. Managing director, Adam Hall says: “This is a very recognisable red-brick building which will benefit from a sympathetic conversion into
apartments ideal for those looking to live close to their place of work or city centre amenities. “The development will also add extra benefits for local businesses by bringing in new economically active residents.” The apartments were approved on the condition the developer contributes £2,000 per home for open space provision in the local area and plants one tree per five homes once the work gets underway.

INDUST RY N EWS GARDEN CENTRE EXPANDS WITH NEW TEA ROOM VENTURE South Liverpool’s Aigburth Hall Nurseries Garden Centre has expanded its business with the launch of a new tea room. Proprietors Jean and Robbie Cottier have opened up the Daisy Place Tea Shop at the family-run Aigburth Hall Avenue centre following “continued requests” from regular customers. The new venture is being run by Jess Wall, whose grandfather previously owned the nurseries and still owns the land. It is also expected to boost business throughout the whole year, including times when there is often a “dip” in garden centre trade. Aigburth Hall Nurseries Garden Centre has teamed up with local and independent suppliers for the venture, including Joe Black Coffee and loose leaf tea providers at Leaf, as well as food from Southport’s No Gluten Baker. A special launch evening was recently held to celebrate the opening of the new tea shop, with local businesses and business partners including Matt Brockstone of Brockstone Builders, interiors specialist Elaine Cunningham and Mike Harrison from Liverpool Cricket Club in attendance. Long–standing customers and garden centre neighbours were also invited to mark the opening and sample food on offer from representatives of No Gluten Bakers and Patchwork Pate.
PROPERTY INDUSTRY PAYS TRIBUTE TO NORTHERN FURNITURE OWNER Tributes have been pouring in from across Liverpool’s property industry after Northern Furniture owner Mark Rosenblatt sadly passed away.
Mark was a regular exhibitor at the Merseyside Landlord and Property Show and the tragic news of his death came just days after he had taken part in this year’s event at the BT Convention Centre. Pat Morecroft and Emily Robinson, who worked for Mark at the Kempson Street based landlord furniture provider, have led members of the industry in paying their respects to their much loved employer. Pat, Northern Furniture’s company manager, says: “Mark was my boss and my friend of 24 years; the kindest, most generous and patient man I have ever met. It was a privilege to have worked for and known him. His values and work ethic will continue in his memory. He will be truly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.” Meanwhile the firm’s sales executive, Emily, adds: “I have worked for Mark for two years and in those two years, I have learnt so much. I was his new project. He gave me such confidence and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and experience new challenges. He was far more than a boss, two years wasn’t long enough, I wish I had more time with him.” Remembering his dedication to the Landlord and Property Show, which Mark had showcased his business at for the past four years, Dominique Jones, advertising sales manager at Move Publishing, describes the furniture expert as a “loyal and regular exhibitor” and a “great businessman with a very unique and persistent way of negotiating business”. Mark was also well known across the wider property industry with Ian Taylor, lettings manager at Reeds Rains City Living, continuing the tributes. He says: "I have known Mark for 13 years, he bought the first property I ever sold on Allerton Road and I had the pleasure to know him ever since. “Always smiling, I will really miss seeing him whether it be at the auctions, landlord shows or doing furniture jobs. It was a real shock for me when I heard the news, sadly missed by all.” Emily Mills from PLA Properties adds: “I've known mark for several years through the industry and networking. I always found mark a very funny man and I will miss him a lot.”

an online property portal for landlords including a property repair and maintenance section that allows landlords to log problems, diarise maintenance and monitor contractors. Advice from chartered accountants 0151 228 8977 Julia Casimo
Integral or free standing white goods - Does it make a difference? Q: I own and let out 8 properties - all unfurnished, so I can’t claim the wear and tear allowance. Some of them are in need of renovation – particularly the kitchens. How do I maximise the tax relief I will get? A: Until April 2013 landlords of unfurnished/part furnished residential properties could claim the ‘renewals basis’ when they were working out their tax. What this meant was that although they were barred from claiming the 10% wear and tear deduction, they could offset the cost of any furniture and appliances within the property. So for example if a landlord spent £400 on a replacement fridge for a let property, then this amount could be offset against the income from the property, reducing the tax bill. In April 2013, HMRC removed this concession, and it is now no longer possible to claim any tax deduction when a property is let unfurnished for the costs of free standing cookers, fridges, freezers, carpets, curtains and other similar items which are normally provided by landlords of unfurnished properties. However landlords can still claim for repair costs in general and particularly repairs associated with such items. Whilst this does seem rather unfair, HMRC have at least agreed that the replacement of appliances integrated into a kitchen or utility area can qualify for tax relief as they consider these to be a repair of the overall fitted kitchen/bathroom etc. Q: What should I do then? A: You have a couple of options. Firstly consider letting the properties on a furnished basis – properties let on a furnished basis continue to qualify for the 10% wear and tear allowance. For the taxman, furnished means ‘capable of normal occupation without the tenant having to provide their own beds, chairs etc.’ Secondly, if you do not want to do this, consider installing fitted white goods and cookers etc. into your properties. Thirdly, think about a small reduction in the rent, and allow the tenant to supply the items, or hire them themselves.
As with many decisions you really do need to take independent financial and tax advice. DAY IN THE LIFE OF
M Y FIRST
JESS BOLGER assistant producer, Royal Court Liverpool AM
An early start to head over to the ice rink for a 6.30am practice session or a lesson with my coach. I’ve really got into ice skating in the last year; the nearest rink to Liverpool is in Widnes and I get out there three or four times a week.
AM
Home to shower and change for work.
AM
Arrive at the office and respond to emails. Most of these relate to casting for future shows or potential venue hires. This morning there is one from a director who is working with us who needs to rearrange some potential audition dates. He’s got a good excuse though, he’s off to America to work with Ryan Gosling for a few days!
AM
We get sent lots of potential new plays and part of my job is to read through them and see which ones might be a good fit for here. The one I read today is a definite maybe so I’ll have another read and then pass it on to the chief executive to see if it’s something we want to produce.
PM
Lunch is a sandwich at my desk while prepping for an afternoon of auditions.
- PM
I really enjoy the auditions part of my job as it’s exciting to meet new actors and see an upcoming show taking shape. Some actors don’t seem quite right on paper but then you see them in the role and you know that they’re right for the part. It’s a great feeling when you see someone who is a perfect fit.
PM
Catch up on emails from the afternoon including a couple of particularly keen agents looking for feedback on this afternoon’s auditions. Some good news and some bad news to be imparted.
PM
Pop down to the auditorium to watch the evening’s performance, I always enjoy watching the audience watching the show. Afterwards I meet the cast at the bar for a quick drink before it’s off home to bed!
WISH LIST VICKIE ANDERSON Liverpool Cheese Company
My dream meal would be a celebration involving lots of friends and would take a long time to eat. It wouldn’t matter where it was as long as those people I hold dear were there, however, I spent some time working in Italy when I was younger and I think the people there have completely the right attitude to meals. Many courses, free flowing wine and conversation- and plenty of cheese. Most significantly the food needs to be simple and pared back. Everything needs to be fresh, seasonal, local if possible and as unprocessed as possible. A peach, grown with love, unhampered by chemicals and eaten when perfectly ripe will taste better than any dish with 25 ingredients. Most of my friends are particular about their food so the main element of my dream meal would be pleasing them all. In fact it would probably be best if they cooked it. 72 Your Move

CAR I bought a white VW Beetle from my grandad before I passed my test. He’d hand stitched the carpets into it himself and I loved it. Sadly, he decided he had made a huge mistake in parting with it and wanted it back. It got swapped for an old Wolseley 1300.
JOB I worked in Tesco on the frozen food section. The cold was a challenge as I had to wear gloves, whatever the weather!
HOLIDAY My grandparents moved to Wales and had a lovely static caravan on the beach near Prestatyn. Childhood summers were spent here, playing all day in the sand.
HOUSE My wife and I bought a three bed terraced house in Northop from the council for a bargain price of £14,000. We had 16 very happy years there with our three children, and it was definitely our best investment.
RECORD I wasn’t allowed out to buy records so my older brother Lee went to Spencer’s record shop in Flint and bought ‘Hey Jude’ by The Beatles on vinyl for me.
PET We had a poodle called Sarah and a whippet called Kizzy in the family. They managed to put me off for life I’m afraid, as I’m not much of an animal lover these days!

One Thing I’ve Yet to do in Liverpool... Liverpool Watersports Centre JASMINE PRESTON lettings negotiator, Keppie Massie Residential Each time I take a client to view a waterfront apartment I cannot fail to be impressed by the Liverpool Watersports Centre. Whilst the Wowball-water roller looks like fun it has to be the windsurfing that really captures my imagination. I always think that to be able to
enjoy the open water and experience the elements, yet be so close to our lovely city centre must be amazing. It is definitely on the list of things to do for this Liverpool girl, I must remember on my next day off!
MY THING

PATRICK CARROLL credit controller, Hilton Hotel Liverpool Outside of working hours I dedicate my spare time to training for Ironman triathlons. An Ironman athlete is required to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles, one after the other, non-stop. In 2014, I tasked myself with completing the race in under 10 hours, a time that would enter me into a very exclusive time club (kind of like running a marathon in under three hours). Training would take up 25 hours per week (that’s on top of 40+ hours in work and 10 hours studying). My passion for this sport started with the Liverpool Triathlon in 2009, a smaller distance compared to what I do now. From there I caught the bug and had to increase the distance - when researching I found Ironman and started training in September 2009. I completed my first Ironman (UK) in August 2010, in a time of 12 hours 17 minutes and enjoyed every second of it. From there I went on to complete a further five races in four years (Outlaw, Wales, Lanzarote, France and Sweden) and have managed to decrease my time to 10 hours and six minutes with a goal for my final race of 2014 (Ironman Barcelona) being under 10 hours. I would recommend this sport to anyone; the feeling of crossing that finish line after 12 months of hard work and dedication is immense.

TALENT
liverpool is one of my favourite cities outside of london and i used to spend a bit of time there. it’s the crowd, the vibe and good people
INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG
How did you start out as a rapper? Is it true that it’s something you accidentally got into? All my mates had been making music since we were 12 or 13 and I never did. I never really had any kind of artistic expression at all; I couldn’t draw, I couldn’t paint, I couldn’t play any instruments. I loved music though and I always listened to music from when I was really young. I was 18 at the time and everyone was just freestyling at my friend’s house and I got put on the spot and I rapped a lyric as a joke. Everyone was like ‘what, you can rap?’ and I was like ‘naaah mate!’ but I just started messing around with it from there. So how have you since progressed to writing your own lyrics? Do you feel like you end up giving a lot away about yourself through your writing? Yeah but I think all the best artists that I really favoured, and still do favour, always did. I don’t really question [where my ideas come from]. They come when they come and they don’t when they don’t, and it’s a pain when they don’t and I’m trying to write something! I think there’s so much to write about. I can never understand when people say they’ve run out of ideas, I can understand them not being able to write about a certain topic at a certain point as sometimes you’ve just got to be in the right mood and sometimes you’re not. There’s so much to talk about though isn’t there? So much happens from day to day. I don’t have any particular influences; it’s definitely just the case that it’s an amalgamation of everything. You’ve worked on a lot of collaborations, with people like Emile Sande who have achieved a lot of success after appearing on one of your records to the likes of Lily Allen. What do you look for in a collaborator, and do you aim to work with rising talent? I don’t really look to people for what they’ve achieved or haven’t, it’s not really about that. It’s just about whether someone’s cool and if the talent’s there. I’m not a singer but I love melody in songs so I write but I can’t sing, and it makes sense to get someone to sing them. I wouldn’t want to sacrifice the melody in the music for the sake of not working with people. You recently released your third album, ‘Growing Up in Public’. Do you feel pressure when you’re working on an album now given that your first records have had a lot of chart success? No because it’s always dependent on how you react to it and the support you get and the planets lining up. So much of it is out of your hands - from that minute you deliver it to the record label it’s not really yours anymore because it becomes everyone else’s and how they take to it is really down to them. It’s weird
because if I never got playlisted on the radio then half of the people who might love the records would never even hear them. You never know what’s going to happen, you can’t really count your chickens before they hatch and I don’t think it’s smart to even have expectations. You can have hopes but I think it’s just best to try and manage your expectations and see what happens. You’re bringing your current tour to Liverpool in the coming weeks. Are you looking forward to getting back on stage in the city? Yeah, I love Liverpool. Liverpool’s is one of my favourite cities outside of London and I used to spend a bit of time there. It’s the crowd, the vibe and good people, you have lovely people! For you, how does the live experience compare to the studio experience? They’re just completely different parts of something that I love. I love them both for completely different reasons. It’s lovely to come up with an idea in the studio, when you come up with a lyric that makes you shake your hands with excitement. And then on stage it’s completely different because you’re getting to perform those lyrics that you’ve come up with and see the effects that they have on people straight in front of you. You’ve got a massive presence on social media, with millions of Facebook and Twitter followers. Is that a way that you enjoy connecting with your fans? Yeah, I guess so. It’s something I’ve been doing since MySpace and I used to blog a lot so it’s just been a natural thing for me. From chart and award success to tours and high profile performances, you’ve achieved a lot in the time you’ve been releasing records. Is there anything you’d still really like to achieve? I still feel like I need to establish myself, I don’t feel like I’m established yet even. I just want to keep working and putting out my music and keep being able to tour. What are your plans beyond this latest tour and album? I’m in the studio working on new stuff already. I don’t want there to be a gap between this one and the next one, I want to do this like I did the first two albums. The live side of music is quite a lot shorter now, but I’d like my music to travel and I’d like to travel with it as well so that we’ve got probably the best chance we’ve had thus far with this record to go to other places. We’ve had success in some places, like we did well in Italy and we did well in Australia but I’d like to see us spread a bit further.
Professor Green will bring his ‘Growing Up In Public’ tour to O2 Academy Liverpool on 1 December. For tickets and information visit www.professorgreen.co.uk

L I F E S T Y L E L AT E S T DAVE PICHILINGI LIVERPOOL SOUND CITY From globally famous musicians and emerging acts to showcasing homegrown talent, Sound City has become a prominent fixture on both Liverpool’s cultural calendar and also the UK’s festival circuit. But with the announcement that cult UK band Belle and Sebastian will be a headliner in 2015, came news of a major shake-up of the event next year as it moves from city centre venues to a new home on the waterfront. We caught up with Sound City’s CEO, Dave Pichilingi to find out more about what the changes mean for music fans.
How many stages will there be at the new site? At this stage we don’t know, but it will have the look and feel of all our previous events.
The festival is relocating out of the city centre to a new dockland site. Will any Sound City presence remain in the centre? No, the whole thing will now be on the dockland and we’re going to be using everything from boats and warehouses to the actual docks themselves, so the whole essence of what Sound City is about will still be there. You’ll still be able to find things in little nooks and crannies. From the customer experience point of view we’ve found that every band and every venue have Kevin got to be within five minutes of each other Satchell – that’s what we’ve built our reputation on over the past few years and it wouldn’t make sense to fragment the event by having venues in the city centre and on the waterfront. It would mean our customers would have to pay a fortune in taxis to see everything they want to see. Is it going to have more of a traditional festival feel given that it’s on one contained site? That will be what people will assume but we’ve worked very hard to find the space that we’ve got and we were offered a number of other spaces that would have given that feel. Because the space has warehouses, buildings, docks and the actual waterfront it means we can offer something that’s totally unique. If you go to a green field festival you’re actually stood in a field with a load of tents and that’s not what we’re about, it’s a completely different customer experience.
The announcement mentioned a redevelopment of the site, incorporating existing buildings and warehouses. What’s the scale of the project to turn the site around between now and the festival? We’ve got our production teams in again and we’ve already had them in a number of times. We’ve done assessments on the actual buildings that we’re going to be using so we’ve had the go ahead on all of that. There’s some work to be done and we’re investing quite a lot of money, time and effort in to making it the right experience but, at the same time, it’s paramount that it’s a safe experience. It’s not just seismic change in terms of the move; the things we’ve got to do down there are pretty significant but we think it’s the right thing because it makes us distinctive. The world is full of city centre festivals that use existing venues and we’ve tried to change that by using cathedrals and warehouses and everything else. I think we set the cat amongst the pigeons by what we’ve done over the last few years. It would have been very easy for us just to carry on with that formula but we want to be at the forefront. We want people to copy us. A lot of city centre venues were involved in the festival in the past. Are any of those festivals still going to have a presence at the new site? Yes, a number of people that we’ve worked with in the past will be having some presence on the site.
You’ve said that, partly, the change is so that everyone can get to see everything. Yes, we had queues around the block this year for certain bands and we got quite heavily criticised from some of our customers saying they couldn’t get in to see some of the acts they’d paid money to see so a lot of it is an answer to that. We don’t like people not getting into the venues, these are tough times and if people spend money on coming to Sound City to see bands they want to see then we want to make sure people see them. The space that we’ve found was all of our answers in one because it’s got that absolute customer experience that people are used to whilst, still, you’ll be able to see every band and artist that you want to see. We’ll still be presenting upwards of 300 artists at the site. And finally, you’ve kept most of the line-up under wraps at the moment apart from the big announcement that Belle and Sebastian will be a headliner. That’s right, and we think that’s a statement in itself because Belle and Sebastian is absolutely a Sound City band in terms of credibility, integrity and all of those things. I’ve loved them for many years and we did look at them a number of times before but for a number of reasons we couldn’t get them. We just think it sets us off on the right footing to announce such a credible and longstanding band as them. We’ve got some massive announcements to come and at the heart of it will be those amazing emerging bands like the Royal Bloods, the Jungles, Bastilles and Jake Buggs and so on that we had before anyone else, and we’ll continue that trend as ever.
New online beauty agency launched A new online service is being launched on 7 November so that beauty fans can have their pick of pampering sessions without having to worry about safety. Set up by Ryan Edwards, Zoe Graham and Antony Williams, Your Look Booked brings around 100 freelance hairdressers, nail technicians, beauticians and make-up artists together on one website, all of whom are fully insured and qualified with at least an NVQ Level 2. Ryan, who along with business partner Zoe has worked in salons for 20 years, says the new venture has come about after the industry has seen mobile beauticians and
hairdressers become more popular with clients wanting treatments at home and also at special occasions such as hen parties. However, he adds that hair and beauty is “the only profession where you can use harmful chemicals where you don’t have to be qualified”. The online agency not only aims to ensure safety, but also provides a one-stop facility for booking appointments for single and group pampering. For further information visit www.yourlookbooked.com

Around 125 fundraisers slept outside for the event
What’s On SLEEPOUT SUCCESS FOR LIVERPOOL HOMELESS CHARITY At least £16,000 was raised for Liverpool homeless charity, The Whitechapel Centre as supporters braved the elements to spend a night outside. Around 125 people took part in the organisation’s first ‘sleepout’ event in the grounds of St Nicholas Church on Chapel Street, where they set up camp for the night with sleeping bags and cardboard for shelter. Participants, who also had access to toilets and refreshments within the safe, stewarded area, learned about the issues homeless people face in the city as an outreach manager from the charity spoke at the event. The ‘Choir With No Name’, made up of members who have slept rough or in hostels, also performed on the night. Ruth McCaughley, fundraising manager at The Whitechapel Centre, says participants and
organisers were “amazingly lucky” with the dry weather on the night, and supporters had said they would be keen to take part in the event again in the future. She adds: “We’d like to give a big thank you from The Whitechapel Centre for everyone who was so enthusiastic and got into the spirit. Thanks for the fantastic fundraising that will make a difference.” The charity, which works with people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation and also manages the 24-hour No Second Night Out Merseyside telephone line, is now appealing for donations towards its vital services in the run up to Christmas. Landbaby, The Bluecoat
LITTLE BENNETT DRESS (RIGHT)
L.K Bennett, Metquarter L.K Bennett is a British brand synonymous with luxury, quality and femininity; so it’s no wonder it’s favoured by the likes of Kate Middleton, who, when photographed in the brand, helps sell it out in a matter of hours. Its latest collection, LBD by L.K.B is a selection of six luxurious cocktail dresses designed to suit every occasion. Our favourite is the Ponza dress (£325), with an A-line silhouette and round neckline, this dress oozes sixties glamour. The crystal embellishment around the neckline, front and hem means you can leave your extra jewellery at home.
The Bluecoat’s Landbaby has recently launched a haberdashery section; stocked full of threads, ribbons, buttons and sewing essentials. One of the lovely brands available in store is Merchant & Mills - its mission; to give handmade couture back to the masses. PRE-SHOW MEALS Liverpool is blessed with several worldclass theatres and a host of excellent dining venues. Those looking for somewhere to eat before a show can be faced with a vast amount of options. Try these three top venues for a pre-show meal close to venues across the city.
DOCK DELIGHTS PanAm Britannia Pavilion, Albert Dock, L1 Located in the heart of the Albert Dock, PanAm is just a short walk from the Echo Arena and has an entire pre-concert menu offering a range of starters, sides and mains from traditional dishes such as fish and chips and sausage and mash to pork tenderloin and rib-eye steaks. Keep an eye out for exclusive offers for pre and post-concert food, which include 20% discount when a concert ticket is produced.
CULTURAL CUISINE The Side Door 29A Hope Street, L1 Hope Street, which boasts the Philharmonic Hall and Everyman Theatre among its venues, is not short of excellent eateries. For a pre-theatre meal with a relaxed bistro feel and a vibrant night time atmosphere, visit The Side Door. Homemade style food options with a focus on locally sourced, quality ingredients mean the food has generous portions so that you can be pleasantly full for the duration of the show.
FRENCH FANCY Bistro Jacques 37-39 Hardman Street, L1
It’s the reasonably priced multi-course deals that make this restaurant shine. With a daily pretheatre three-course menu on offer, show goers can enjoy a variety of seasonal rustic French dishes in an area that’s a stone’s throw from both the cultural hub of Hope Street and the main city centre. And with the offering usually featuring fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, there’s something to suit all tastes.
KASBAH CAFE AND BAZAAR Bold Street, L1 4HR Opening the large, ornate door in to Kasbah Café and Bazaar felt like I was stepping through the wardrobe in to Narnia. You’re instantly transported from a busy Bold Street to an enchanting Moroccan land; with lively music and authentic décor including candles, tagines, mirrors, lights and tea sets – you don’t know where to look first. As soon as my sister and I entered we were met by the owner, who welcomed us with open arms and gave us an enthusiastic overview of the recently refurbished restaurant. As we settled in to our window booth table, two Fez hats lay in front of us waiting to be worn; without any hesitation my sister got into the Moroccan spirit and placed hers on, only reluctantly taking it off as we were leaving. Kasbah is an alcohol-free environment, so while we looked over the food menu we chose a fruit drink. When they informed us that the drink we had chosen wasn’t available it turned out perfectly, as our waiter then recommended the Moroccan lemonade - a homemade drink with fresh mint and lime; it was a refreshing

choice which we both loved. The Kasbah menu offers varied dishes; from cold and hot tapas to start, lighter Moroccan salads, to favourites from the grill and traditional tagines. I was excited to try some authentic Moroccan food, which is known for its subtle mix of spices and aromatic flavours. To start, we enjoyed one of the cold tapas options, Moroccan olives (£2.95) tossed in a charmoula sauce; a Moroccan staple which is used to flavour different meats and vegetables. The olives were the perfect appetiser before our starters arrived. My sister opted for the Moroccan meat balls (£4.95), which were cooked in a rich tomato sauce and served with a basket of bread; perfect for dipping and to scoop up the remaining sauce. I picked the tangier prawns (£4.95), marinated in more of the charmoula sauce, they were so delicious and were seasoned with a perfect balance of spice. Next, it was on to our main meals and my guest
chose a Moroccan twist on an American classic, the Kasbah burger (£7.95). It was packed full of flavour, including the special sauce covering the bun – which is still a Kasbah secret. I decided on the aptly named, Tagine de Fez (£10.95); a lamb tagine with caramelised prunes, roasted almonds and apricots. Served in a traditional tagine pot, the lamb was so tender and tasty. All the tagines are served with a side of saffron rice, Moroccan bread or couscous – a difficult decision to pick just one, but I eventually went for the aromatic saffron rice. If our Souk style surroundings and choice of headwear weren’t authentic enough, we ended the meal with true Moroccan flair – by enjoying a pot of traditional mint tea. Everything at Kasbah is a brilliant performance; from the food presentation, excellent customer service, even the pouring of the tea is made in to a spectacle, and there’s no doubt it’s a performance I want to experience again and again.

SPOOKY SUCCESS FOR CHARITY WELLY WALK
Halloween themed family fun
T
he Spooky Welly Walk made a triumphant return to Sefton Park, raising money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The Liverpool park was overrun with tiny ghouls, mini wicked witches and small skeletons aboard ghost trains, making spooky cupcakes and watching creepy crawly shows. Hailing this year’s event a success Ashleigh Quarless, the events fundraising assistant for the charity, says: “We were overwhelmed with how well this year’s event turned out. Around 4,500 people came and we weren’t expecting it to be so successful.” Families and housing association groups came out in their Halloween finery to play games, listen to scary stories and take part in the costume parade. The event raised around £10,000 for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
