CONTENTS
EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to the brand new issue of Your Move. In our latest Hot Topic, we find out how councils around the city region and local enterprises are working to revive thousands of disused homes to provide further housing and breathe new life into neighbourhoods. Plus, as this year’s Liverpool Biennial approaches with street displays amongst its brimming programme, we bring you a walking tour of the city centre’s vibrant collection of public art. Follow our trail to see some of the standout statues and sculptures which are here all year round. If that’s not enough, we catch up with Nicky Weller – sister of The Jam frontman Paul – as the Cunard Building prepares to host a landmark exhibition about the band. And as Euro 2016 kicks off, we show you where you can get behind the Three Lions by tucking into a traditional English feast.

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS
ÂŁ445,000 MATHER AVENUE ALLERTON L Seating adorned in striking fabric is a simple touch which really draws attention in this spacious lounge. The stand-out furniture complements subtle hints of colour and contemporary features, which also work well alongside more classic fittings like the chandelier and fireplace. The lounge is one of several communal areas in this fourbedroom detached property, which also includes an open-plan living space incorporating a living and dining room.
SUTTON KERSH /
ÂŁ475,000 INCE ROAD THORNTON L Statement walls are a focal point in several rooms of this fourbedroom detached home. A bold and black pattern brings plenty of character without being overpowering in this double bedroom, which also features windows overlooking farmland, neat storage in the form of fitted wardrobes and simple wooden style flooring. Elsewhere in the house large blooming roses liven up the walls of an otherwise neutral shower room.

THE ISSUE OF EMPTY HOMES IS NATIONWIDE AND ONE THAT HAS COME UNDER INCREASED ATTENTION WITH THE SEEMING LACK OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING AVAILABLE HERE ON MERSEYSIDE THE NUMBER OF DISUSED HOUSES IS THE HIGHEST IN THE NORTH WEST AND ONE OF THE HIGHEST IN THE COUNTRY WITH OVER VACANT HOMES IN LIVERPOOL ALONE AS A NEW ENTERPRISE PREPARES TO LAUNCH IN THE CITY WHICH AIMS TO BRING AS MANY OF THESE HOMES BACK INTO USE YOUR MOVE LOOKS AT HOW THE PROJECT WILL WORK AND HOW LOCAL AUTHORITIES ACROSS THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION LCR ARE DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM
T
here are a number of reasons why a property becomes empty. It can be through the death or ill health of an owner; the property being subject to probate or other minor legal quarrels or a landlord being unwilling or unable to let the property. An owner may also have inherited a property without knowing what to do with it. Whatever the reason, according to Liverpool City Council’s Empty Homes team, as of 1 April 2016 there were 8,241 vacant properties in Liverpool, of which 4,207 were long-term voids (properties which have been empty for six months or longer). An increasing focus of local councils across the city region has been on bringing as many empty homes as possible back into use through a range of strategies and schemes.
out some associated fees. Liverpool City Council’s Empty Homes team has confirmed it will introduce a similar scheme later this year. “Bringing empty homes back into use is a key priority for us,” says Councillor Mike Murphy, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development. “It adds to our housing stock, provides good quality homes and improves our neighbourhoods. “We have successfully used Empty Dwelling Management Orders on a number of occasions to take over the management of empty properties in the borough and, where necessary, carry out refurbishment works to bring them back into use. “Since 2011, we have successfully returned more than 350 empty properties to use. Over that period, we have achieved a 72% reduction
value at £60,000 and now they’re stuck with it. “It’s quite easy to find great big lumps of empty houses like Granby, Anfield and the Welsh Streets because they are all together in their hundreds. “Others appear in ones and twos and they begin blighting the streets they are on. So my idea, and I know people who have done similar things in other cities, is to find these empty homes, contact the owners and see if we can help.” Alongside his partners Jayne Lawless and Jen Graham, Ronnie will undertake any required clear out, clean up and decoration of the property in order to prepare them for rent or sale before assisting with the landlord on any legal issues they may have as well as offering specialist housing advice. Known as Coming Home, the group is
“BRINGING EMPTY HOMES BACK INTO USE IS A KEY PRIORITY. IT ADDS TO OUR HOUSING STOCK, PROVIDES GOOD QUALITY HOMES AND IMPROVES OUR NEIGHBOURHOODS.”” To support this, the LCR was allocated £16.8 million in 2012 to restore over 700 empty homes across the city region from the government’s ‘Clusters of Empty Homes Fund’, with £3.04m used on South Liverpool projects such as the redevelopment of 37 terraced houses in Toxteth’s Welsh Streets. Another £2.5m was proportioned to schemes in Sefton, Wirral and Knowsley – all three of which have developed their own strategies for dealing with empty homes. Wirral Council operates HOUSE (Home Ownership Using Sustainable Empty Properties), a scheme which refurbishes properties to a high standard before selling them on at discount to first-time buyers and owner occupiers. In Sefton, a free matchmaker scheme is in operation which pairs up empty home owners who want to sell with potential buyers, cutting
in properties that had been empty for a minimum of five years and a 47% reduction in properties that had been empty for over two years.” In Liverpool, a new enterprise initiative which aims to bring thousands of empty homes back into use is currently being developed by local community volunteer Ronnie Hughes, who was heavily involved with the successful Granby Four Streets scheme in Toxteth which saw the redevelopment of 150 formerly empty Victorian homes. “There are quite a lot of ordinary people who bought another house because it looked like a good investment and they’re now stuck with the thing,” says Ronnie, a former director at Liverpool Housing Trust. “These are not your caricature second home owners - they are people who put some money into the house next door because it looked good
currently working on a business model for the enterprise and will be pitching to the Beautiful Ideas Co. CIC in North Liverpool next month, aiming to secure £30,000 in funding to begin work on several properties in the area. Ronnie is keen to stress that the aim of Coming Home is not to create social housing, but a whole range of reasonably priced properties to give ordinary people the chance to own their own home. “I want to be able to help out people like my daughter – 30 years old, she and her husband are in employment, she has three children and they will never be able to afford a house of their own. “I want to come into this market at reasonable prices but do a good spread of houses. As much as I might do streets like the ones in Granby small terraced houses - I’m perfectly up for doing a semi-detached in Childwall as well.”

NEWS LIVERPOOL DEVELOPER TO SPONSOR NWPAs AWARD Elliot Lawless, director of Elliot Group
Prominent Liverpool property developer Elliot Group is the latest sponsor to sign up to this year’s prestigious NWPAs. The firm, which currently has projects underway including Wolstenholme Square, Heaps Mill in the city’s Baltic Triangle and Seel Street Hotel, is backing the Best Commercial Scheme category for 2016. A glittering ceremony will take place on 20 October at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, and will celebrate a year of success across the North West’s commercial and residential property sectors. The Best Commercial Scheme accolade is one of 12 awards set to be presented on the night, and Elliot Group’s sponsorship of the category also follows the firm’s announcement of a debut residential scheme in Salford. Elliot Lawless, director of Elliot Group, says: “The NWPAs provides a great platform to celebrate the North West’s thriving property market, so we’re delighted to be involved as a sponsor for this year’s awards. “At Elliot Group we’re passionate about high quality development and delivering a diverse range of real estate schemes, so we’re looking forward to being a part of the NWPAs and acknowledging the people and projects behind the changing face of the region.” The Best Commercial Scheme category is open to all speculative and non-speculative commercial schemes within the retail, office, leisure, hotel, educational or industrial commercial sector. Judges will consider each entry based on its overall commercial viability and suitability to its end use. Forth Homes is the headline sponsor for this year’s NWPAs event, which is organised by Move Publishing, the team behind Your Move.
MSB Solicitors, Redrow Homes Lancashire and North West, Paul Crowley & Co, UK Business Supplies, The Foundry Agency, Bridging Finance Solutions, Yu Property Group, Countryside and PCS Law will join Elliot Group in sponsoring this year’s awards ceremony as category sponsors. The closing date for all entries is 1 July 2016 and full entry details can be found on www.nwpas.com.
HELP TO BUY QUESTIONS ANSWERED AT GLEESON’S PEEL COURT EVENT First-time buyers will be able to find out all about Help to Buy mortgages at a special information event held by Gleeson Homes at its Peel Court development. Prospective buyers reserving a new home during the twoday event in Bootle will also receive a distinctive interior design package included in the price. Simon DiCanio, sales manager at Gleeson Homes, says: “Help to Buy is really popular, especially with first-time buyers, as you only need a 5% deposit and your mortgage repayments are much lower. “However people still have lots of questions about the scheme so we are holding this event to give buyers the opportunity to get those questions answered.” New build mortgage specialists will be on hand to offer free expert advice about mortgages and answer any questions visitors may have on how to finance a new home. Prices for Gleeson’s two and three-bedroom homes at Peel Court start from £98,995 or £79,196 when purchased with Help to Buy, which is available on all homes. Buyers are invited to attend the special event on 18 and 19 June between 10am and 5pm.

NEWS INCREASED DEMAND FOR LARGE HOMES AT PARKLANDS DEVELOPMENT Further ‘Oak’ style homes could be built
Substantial demand for large four-bedroom properties is said to be prompting further development plans at Liverpool’s Parklands scheme. The number of four-bedroom homes at the Broad Lane site could be more than doubled after house builder New City Vision Liverpool Ltd submitted an updated planning application for the project. Subject to planning approval, the number of ‘Oak’ style fourbedroom properties could increase from eight to 19 with significant interest also reported for the ‘Maple’ style three-bedroom home. Louise Craven, sales manager at New City Vision Liverpool, says: “We’re in the process of getting a four-bedroom show home built at the moment due to such high demand. “Customers are impressed as the square footage of our largest three-bedroom home is the same as other four-bedroom homes in the area.” Prices for the ‘Oak’ style four-bedroom homes at Parklands start at £199,995 and feature four double bedrooms, a family bathroom and a practical utility room. For more information on the Parklands development visit www.parklandsliving.co.uk.
MERSEYSIDE AGENT BACKS CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT ICONIC LOCAL LANDSCAPE Wirral estate agent Karl Tatler has joined forces with the National Trust to help protect one of the area’s most wellknown parklands. The firm is encouraging the public to donate £1 in exchange for a Karl Tatler Bag for Life with all money raised going towards the care of Thurstaston Common. Thurstaston Common is popular with walkers for its views of the Liverpool skyline and the Welsh hills as well as Thor’s Stone, a large mysterious red sandstone outcrop where it is claimed early Viking settlers held religious ceremonies. The 100% recyclable bags feature photographs of Wirral landmarks and landscapes and are available from all seven Karl Tatler branches. Karl Tatler, managing director of Karl Tatler Estate Agents & Lettings, says: “Thurstaston Common is a much-loved landscape, holding precious memories for many local people. “The aim of our Thurstaston Common fundraising appeal is to help the National Trust with their crucial work protecting the nature we love, preserving it for generations to come.” John Twigg, area ranger for the National Trust, adds: “We’re delighted that Karl Tatler has chosen to support us through its Bag for Life scheme. “Thurstaston Common is nationally important because there’s so little lowland heathland left now in Britain, and many birds, insects and animals, including some that are rare and endangered, depend entirely on its unique plants.”

OPEN HOUSE EVENT TO TAKE PLACE AT THE KEEL An open house event will be held at The Keel this month to showcase the waterside apartments to potential tenants. The building, which is approaching full occupancy, will open its doors to the public between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 18 June. Touchstone Residential, which manages the Queens Dock complex, is opening up a premium, three-bedroom unit for potential tenants to view. Champagne and light refreshments will be served during the event and members of the Touchstone team will be on site to show people around the communal areas and answer questions. Touchstone Residential portfolio manager, Stephen Rogers tells Your Move: “The idea of the open house is to showcase the apartment. “There are about 15 units left to rent at The Keel and this is a final push to get us to full occupancy. It’s a nice way for us to meet our potential tenants.” Last month Touchstone Residential launched an activities initiative at The Keel to help create a greater sense of community. The scheme includes on-site events and free personal training sessions for residents at the building’s communal gym. Those interested in attending the open house are instructed to head to The Keel’s main reception on the north side of the building on the day. The Keel will open its doors to potential tenants

Redrow’s new Fazakerley scheme brings local jobs boost Construction work on 60 new homes at Redrow’s Redbridge Park development in Fazakerley is creating new jobs and apprenticeships. Work is currently underway at the North Liverpool site on two show homes and a marketing suite with around 75% of staff hailing from the local area. According to figures from the Home Builders Federation (HBF), each new home built in the UK supports circa 4.3 jobs meaning the 60 new properties at Redbridge Park could provide work for up to 258 people. Shaun Phoenix, project manager for Redrow in Liverpool, says: “We have already got around 25 people working on site on a daily basis, around three quarters of them from the local area, including the site manager James O'Hanlon. “One of our joiners is a Liverpool apprentice, and we are in the process of interviewing more apprentices who will start work at Redbridge Park.” Based on the site of the former Redbridge and Bank View high schools, Redbridge Park will consist of three and fourbedroom detached and semi-detached properties. For more information about Redbridge Park visit www.redrow.co.uk/redbridge.

SUTTON KERSH MAY AUCTION BRINGS IN SALES OF £4.3M Liverpool’s Sutton Kersh has announced more than 70 lots were sold during its latest property auction, bringing in sales of over £4.3 million so far. Bidding for properties in the city is said to have been competitive during the May event, with a three-bedroom house in L4 selling for £20,000 more than the guide price and a property on Bertram Road in Sefton Park raising £50,000 more than expected. Meanwhile, a piece of development land on Wood Street in Liverpool city centre sold for £51,000 more than the guide price. Sutton Kersh also noted strong interest in properties outside of Liverpool, particularly in areas including North Wales, Wigan and Warrington, during the
auction. Cathy Holt, associate director of Sutton Kersh auctions, says: “Buyers are looking for rental and development opportunities in areas with good potential. Some of our lots in St Helens in particular saw fierce bidding, with many going for well above the guide price. “The increased interest definitely points to a growing confidence in the housing market within commuter areas of the city region.” Sutton Kersh’s next auction will take place on 14 July at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza, with the closing date for entries set at 17 June. For more information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions.

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME BUYERS • Make sure you have a mortgage in principle from the bank or a mortgage advisor. This can be with an independent advisor who may work in partnership with an agent, or have a chat with your bank to see what detail they can offer. • Make sure you’re comfortable to borrow the amount you want - exceeding a price you can afford can result in your property being repossessed. • Check out government schemes such as Help to Buy. • Research the area you wish to buy in. Drive around to see where the property is positioned and what is nearby. • Always view as many properties as possible to get an idea of what different homes have to offer and whether the likes of driveways or gardens not being overlooked are important to you. • Register your details with local agents so they can prioritise you on new

instructions. Communicate with the agent face to face and let them know you’re a serious buyer. Make an offer on a property you like don’t be afraid to offer what you can afford, there’s no harm in trying. Understand the property you’re buying by carrying out a survey report. For firsttime buyers it’s important to have a structural survey on any property to cover yourself. Be aware of additional costs in owning your own home such as insurance, council tax, utilities and maintenance. Get excited about being a homeowner. The experience can be overwhelming but enjoy it as much as you can. Think ahead about life insurance and mortgage protection insurance. Find out what your mortgage advisor can offer or shop around for the best deal.
WHAT’S THE BEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED? There is no problem too big to solve: think logically, act respectfully and the outcome will be positive.
The death of the great boxer and outstanding human being, Muhammed Ali reminds us of his astonishing, tumultuous life; of his wit, physical and moral courage, charm and grace. Many who begun by disapproving ended by admiring him. He exuded a manic optimism, a conviction that everything was possible if only you had sufficient nerve, courage and talent. He was never 'just a fighter', for the wit was too nimble and the personality too vivid. He realised ability was not enough, he needed to stand out from the crowd to make his mark on public awareness. Extraordinary men and women change the world and compel us all to change our view of it.

A WALKING TOUR OF LIVERPOOL’S BEST SCULPTURES THE LIVER BIRDS MAY BE LIVERPOOL’S MOST FAMOUS SCULPTURES BUT FROM THEIR LOFTY PERCHES THESE WATCHFUL AVIANS HAVE WITNESSED COUNTLESS OTHERS SPRING UP ACROSS THE CITY CENTRE OVER THE YEARS OUR GRAND CITY PLAYS HOST TO MORE STATUES THAN ANY OTHER IN THE UK OUTSIDE OF LONDON AND WITH THE BIENNIAL SET TO BRING EVEN MORE PUBLIC ARTWORK TO MERSEYSIDE YOUR MOVE HAS PUT TOGETHER A WALKING TOUR OF LIVERPOOL’S BEST SCULPTURES FROM HISTORIC MONUMENTS TO HIDDEN GEMS THAT SLIP UNDER THE RADAR TOO EASILY
SUPERLAMBBANANA TITHEBARN STREET
PALANZANA BYROM STREET
THE HOD CARRIER HUNTER STREET
This quirky mashup of animal and fruit can be found standing guard outside the Avril Robarts Library on Tithebarn Street. Weighing almost eight tonnes and standing at 17 ft, Japanese artist Taro Chiezo’s SuperLambBanana was commissioned in 1998 for Britain’s Art Transpennine exhibition. Taro’s creation not only shows off the artist’s sense of humour, but also raises awareness of the pitfalls surrounding genetic engineering and evokes the heyday of Liverpool’s docks by merging two of its most common cargo loads: fruit and livestock.
Situated on the west side of Byrom Street between twin flyovers lies Stephen Cox’s Palanzana, a treelike form wrapped around a large sphere which was carved out of volcanic rock mined from an Italian quarry that shares its name. Commissioned for the Garden Festival of 1984 and relocated to its current home in 1998, the public artwork highlights Stephen’s fascination with dressed and undressed stone, with parts of the sculpture made from smooth, polished stone and others from unfashioned rock.
The Hod Carrier is a relic of Liverpool’s Gerard Gardens tenements, a grand residential development which once housed entire communities. A tribute to a worker who lost his life during the building’s construction, the monument is a replica of a sculpture which was salvaged when the flats were demolished in 1987. Some would argue the Hod Carrier is too fine an artwork to be situated amid multiple lanes of traffic on Hunter Street, but its placement marks the original location of Gerard Gardens.

LIVERPOOL WALKING TOUR
THE BEATLE STREET STATUE MATTHEW STREET
Liverpool’s music legacy is etched into stone thanks to the number of sculpture tributes to The Beatles found up and down the city. Adorning a Matthew Street wall, the Beatle Street Statue by local artist Arthur Dooley was the first to arrive on the scene when it was unveiled in 1974. The artwork depicts cherubic versions of the band members being cradled by The Madonna, above the fitting caption ‘Four Lads Who Shook The World’.
THE STATUE OF LIBERTY LIME STREET Most Liverpudlians have walked right past this hidden gem on countless occasions and many of those who have spotted it won’t have given its cultural merit a second thought. A miniature version of the Statue of Liberty sits regally above McHale's Irish American Bar as a reminder of a bygone age, a time before World War II when the bar’s predecessor was regularly frequented by US servicemen. The watering hole doesn’t host as many American sailors these days, but the monument above it adds stateside character to Lime Street.
RECONCILIATION CONCERT SQUARE Although Concert Square’s culture is largely limited to the drinking variety, a public artwork of great historic significance stands proudly amid its various bars, often going unnoticed by the area’s revellers. Reconciliation, which depicts two metallic figures embracing, was created by sculptor Stephen Broadbent as a symbol of racial healing and an eternal reminder of the wrongs committed during the peak of the slave trade. Identical sculptures can be found in Belfast, Glasgow, Benin and Virginia.
THE HILLSBOROUGH MONUMENT MEMORIAL WILLIAM BROWN STREET A poignant tribute to the 96 football fans who died in the 1989 stadium disaster, The Hillsborough Monument Memorial was crafted by renowned sculptor Tom Murphy to ensure Liverpool city centre has a dedicated spot where people can go to remember the victims of the tragedy. The circular sculpture, which was commissioned by the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, is wrought out of bronze and bears the names of the 96 along with figures which represent the themes of justice, hope and loss.
LADY HARE HOLDING DOG BALTIC TRIANGLE The Baltic Triangle is a creative hive in the heart of the city centre and Sophie Ryder’s Lady Hare Holding Dog is one of the most imaginative public art exhibits on display there. Located on the junction of Jamaica Street and Jordan Street, this bronze sculpture depicts a surreal amalgamation of human and hare locked in embrace with a canine. London-born Sophie has long been fascinated with hybrid creatures and based the hare’s human characteristics on her own body.
JOHN LENNON PEACE MONUMENT KING’S DOCK Situated on the banks of the River Mersey, tucked away behind ACC Liverpool at Kings Dock, the John Lennon Peace Monument adds colour to the city’s waterfront and celebrates the late musician’s message of peace. The sculpture was created by American art extraordinaire Lauren Voiers, commissioned by the Global Peace Initiative and gifted to the people of Europe as part of a gala ceremony to mark what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

& Best for...
TRADITIONAL ENGLISH England’s Euro 2016 campaign is about to kick off and patriotism has gripped the country. If the hype has you brimming with national pride, why not embrace it by indulging in some of our home nation’s signature dishes? We’ve brought you a triple header of the best places to chow down on traditional English grub and ensure you’re all fuelled up to cheer on the Three Lions.
LIVE AND LET FRY Leaf Tea Shop, Bold Street You can’t get much more English than a tea house, but if a steaming pot of our national drink isn’t enough to get you belting out ‘God Save the Queen’ at the top of your lungs, Leaf ’s superb Full English Breakfast will be. The eatery’s take on the fry up is more traditional than a bowler hat-wearing bulldog, with smoked bacon, sausage, beans and eggs dominating the plate.
BACK OF THE NET Docklands Fish and Chips, Albert Dock
Covered in batter, smothered in salt and doused in vinegar with a side of chippy chips is the only way to serve fish in England and you’ll reel in the catch of the day at Docklands. The Albert Dock eatery ticks all of the right boxes when it comes to our nation’s favourite pairing, serving up some of the freshest and tastiest fish and chips around.
MASH OF THE DAY Pi, Mossley Hill Nothing channels our inner Saint George like a hearty plate of pie and mash with a pint to wash it down. You’ll find the best of both those worlds at Pi in Mossley Hill, a pie-centric bar and restaurant that serves a selection of fine ales and beers in authentic dimpled tankards.
CHEESE & CO
Derby Square, L2
Cheese & Co may not be the first restaurant in Liverpool specialising in the dairy favourite, but it certainly stands out amongst the city’s offering. Situated in Derby Square, the eatery has nabbed the perfect spot to capture a continental vibe which goes far beyond its comprehensive selection of cheeses and wines originating from more exotic European destinations. My dining partner and I visited late on a bright yet breezy Saturday afternoon and, whilst the edge of the commercial district is rarely our go-to destination for a weekend bite, we were won over by the setting as we perched ourselves next to the window. The view looking onto the square with some grand surrounding buildings and the historic Queen Victoria Monument was somewhat reminiscent of the sprawling squares often thriving with pavement café culture in the likes of France and Spain. And if you’re lucky enough to call by during the warmer climates we’ve been enjoying, then a spot on one of Cheese & Co’s outdoor tables seems the ideal place for a break from shopping or working to watch the world go by. Onto the all-important menu and, as avid cheese fans, our expectations were high for an eatery that’s so dedicated to the food it’s named after it. Whilst there’s an option of a set meat board (£8 small, £15.50 large), the choice to
REVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG customise a shareable cheeseboard makes up the core of the menu. It’s reasonably priced, as diners can choose one cheese (£4.95), two (£7.50), three (£9.95) or four cheeses (£12.50) and each board comes with crisp breads, celery, sauerkraut, quince and ginger cake. We picked four cheeses and gladly took on board recommendations from the friendly expert staff as we deliberated over the varied selection. Cheeses ranged from North West-made to products from southern France and La Mancha in Spain, with vegetarian options also included. We eventually opted for the Affineur Walo Red Wine, Walo’s Gruyere AOC as suggested to us, the Crottin de Chavignoi goats cheese and the Cornish Blue. As usual, my dinner date was keen to order olives on the side (£3.95 and served with bread). A pot of black olives marinated with chillis made a tasty alternative to the green or mixed varieties usually served. The full-flavoured, strong smelling Affineuer Walo was a cheese highlight. I’ve previously tasted winewashed varieties which have been mellow in strength, but this had a flavour that was full and lasting. The gruyere was delicious
and not too overpowering, working particularly well when accompanied by quince. The Crottin de Chavignoi, which had a nutty hint, helped to rekindle my love of goats cheese which had once been my favourite before being ruined by too many chalky supermarket versions. The Cornish Blue, a former world champion of cheese, didn’t disappoint either. As we rounded off our trip to the relaxed eatery, which was playing host to social food-sharing groups and quiet couples alike, we couldn’t resist a cake dessert. Unfortunately the salted caramel, chocolate and pretzel brownie (£3.25) was out of stock – if it tastes as good as it sounds then no wonder – so we happily shared an orange and pistachio cake (£3.25) instead. The gluten free sweet finale was beautifully presented, light and served with a creamy frosting. As we stood up to leave, satisfied with our cheesy feast, a wall-mounted chalk board which had been hidden behind my partner throughout was unveiled, highlighting a selection of delicious sounding sandwiches and salads. Already I sense a lunchtime return to Cheese & Co coming on!

TALENT
INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG
WHY IS LIVERPOOL THE IDEAL DESTINATION FOR ‘ABOUT THE YOUNG IDEA’? We visited lots of cities in Scotland, then Newcastle and all over the place. Once we saw that waterfront in Liverpool with all the musical history, and The Jam were always majorly received in Liverpool when they did the likes of the Royal Court, it tied in really nicely. You’ve got the Beatles there and the rest of the Merseybeat history, and they’ve made an amazing job of the city now. YOU’VE DESCRIBED THE EXHIBITION AS “WITHOUT DOUBT THE MOST IN DEPTH LOOK AT THE BAND THERE HAS EVER BEEN” WHAT DO YOU HOPE FANS WILL TAKE AWAY FROM IT? This time it’s four times the size of what we had at Somerset House, so we’ve got pretty much four times the amount of stuff we showed before. There’ll be unseen footage and unseen articles from the band and fan club members and things like that. It’ll also show a social history and politics side because we want schools to visit and for it to be educational. It’ll be a lot more in-depth than it was at Somerset House. DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A LOT MORE CONTENT THAT YOU WANTED TO FEATURE? Definitely, we just didn’t have space. We were a bit restrained from Somerset House’s point of view – it was more like an art installation than putting everything we wanted into it - but this time we’ve got more free rein and we’ll add more content. IT’S GOING TO FEATURE FANS’ MEMORABILIA AS WELL AS ITEMS FROM THE THE JAM’S ARCHIVE WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE FOR YOU PUTTING IT TOGETHER AS PAUL’S SISTER? Last year was great. I’ve worked in the music business all my life but I’d never done an exhibition so it was a real learning curve. It was great working with Somerset House and they taught us a lot, which we’ve all taken on board – myself and the other curator Russell Reader, and Den Davis who’s also a curator and fan. We know what we want to put in it this time. It’s also that personal element of uncovering things like Paul’s school books, and I can personally go to the band and say ‘do you remember this?’ and ‘get this out’, so that puts a nice twist on it.
SO IS IT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS THEIRS GIVEN YOU WERE RUNNING THEIR FAN CLUB BACK IN THE DAY TOO? Absolutely. My mum and dad saved everything and my mum has the most amazing collection of stuff. She’s had quite a big input in this with me too. We’ve gone through all my dad’s old boxes and bags and found stuff we’d completely forgotten was there. It’s been a real family affair! IN TERMS OF THE FANS’ MEMORABILIA DID YOU HAVE AN OPEN CALL FOR PEOPLE TO COME FORWARD WITH ITEMS? Lots of fans message me but we put out an appeal as well and asked if anyone has got anything we wouldn’t necessarily have, or any clothes. The band used to give all their clothes away and I used to give them as competition prizes so we’d really like to get a bit more clothing, especially my brother’s because he’d give everything away! We’ve had some great emails coming back and some people are going to lend us some bits and pieces so it should be even more in depth in that way as well.
“Last year we had Q&As that we put on with the band and we’ve got all that planned for once the exhibition is up and running.” HAS ANYTHING BEEN UNEARTHED THAT HAS SURPRISED YOU OR MADE YOU FEEL PARTICULARLY HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND? Some of my dad’s footage. We found it on an old cine film that we didn’t know about. My brother’s school books have just been amazing too – we only showed a minute piece of that last year but there’s tonnes of it, so that’s all been really good fun. IS THE FOOTAGE OF THE BAND PLAYING? Yeah it’s really early, around 1976 before they were even signed. It’s not great footage but it’s brilliant to see. We didn’t even know it was there. We’ve been trying to uncover a video tape which my dad lent to the BBC because they never gave it back to him, but you can imagine what it’s like 40 years on and trying to dig that out. Somebody is looking for it so it would be amazing if we could find that before the exhibition as well. COULD THE EXHIBITION BE ADDED TO WHILST IT’S OPEN? I think we’ll definitely do that and as things come in we’ll change things around because,
‘ABOUT THE YOUNG IDEA’ WILL BE OPEN FROM JULY TO SEPTEMBER FOR TICKETS AND FURTHER INFORMATION VISIT WWW NICETIMEINC COM
from experience last year, people were coming four or five times so it’s nice for them to go ‘oh look there’s something new over there’. We’ll try to keep updating it in the 12 weeks. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM GROWING UP ALONGSIDE THE BAND? My mum and dad were really cool, they just let the band practice up in my brother’s bedroom and it was like a mad house really, but good fun. We didn’t have a lot but we were all into music and it was just a madcap time. WHY DO YOU FEEL IT’S THE RIGHT TIME TO OPEN UP THE ARCHIVES ON THIS SCALE AND SHOW EVERYONE? Next year is 40 years since The Jam album ‘In the City’ came out so I think it’s really important. The band are really keen on [the exhibition]. They weren’t when I first mentioned it two years ago, they were like ‘what are you doing that for?’, but now they’re all behind it they think it’s amazing people have bothered. HAS THE BAND ENJOYED LOOKING AT THE MEMORABILIA FANS HAVE BROUGHT FORWARD AS WELL? Yeah they have, and I’ve been making them go back into their lofts saying ‘come on, dig out stuff I haven’t got’ too. It’s been like trying to get blood out of a stone most of the time but they are coming up with things and it is fun. Every time I see my mum she’s like ‘I’ve just found this’ and it’s amazing. There are old posters from 1975 and stuff, it’s great. WHO HAS THE EXHIBITION BEEN ATTRACTING SO FAR? HAS IT MAINLY BEEN PEOPLE WHO WERE FANS DURING THE TIME OF THE BAND? It was a real mix last summer, we had 57,000 people through the doors at Somerset House. You have all the die-hard Jam fans from around the world, but then there were people who came with their kids and you think ‘you’re going to be bored’ but they loved it. I just really want to open it up to schools, and then there’s going to be this huge footfall from Liverpool anyway because that part of the city is buzzing and you’ve got the cruises coming in. Even if you don’t know The Jam or you’re not that bothered about them you’ll enjoy it because it’s noisy and colourful and shows a lot of social history of the time. I think it appeals to a lot of people. DO YOU THE FELLOW CURATORS AND MEMBERS OF THE JAM HAVE ANY LIVERPOOL APPEARANCES LINED UP TO TIE IN WITH THE LAUNCH OR DURING THE EXHIBITION? Absolutely, I do curator tours once a week so I should be up to do that. And [last year] we had Q&As that we put on with the band and we’ve got all that planned for once the exhibition is up and running. We’ll also have some literary events and lots of people with their books in the shop will come and do talks. Hopefully it’s going to be actionpacked like it was at Somerset House. Your Move 61
