EDITOR’S LETTER As Pokémon Go continues to grip the nation it seems the Liverpool City Region is certainly making the most of the latest gaming craze. In this issue of Your Move we find out how the area has been benefiting from the wealth of explorers scouring the streets for the game’s hidden characters, and catch up with those who have been using their imagination to adopt the digital trend. Plus designer Manuel Cuevas takes time out of preparations for his special Liverpool exhibition to chat to Your Move about creating clothes for the likes of Elvis and The Beatles to The Killers and Jack White. And as our city’s iconic waterfront enjoys a thriving summer, we look at what it’s like to make the leap from a home on land to living on a houseboat. Enjoy!

WORDS BY MAT THEW SMITH

C H O O S I N G A H O M E O N T H E WAT E R IN THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION

WITH HOUSEBOAT LIVING BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR LIVERPOOL’S WATERWAYS OFFER PLENTY OF POTENTIAL YOUR MOVE EXPLORES THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF HOUSEBOAT LIVING AND HOW RESIDENTS CAN MAKE THE LEAP FROM LIVING ON LAND TO WATER

N

ationally, the number of houseboats along Britain’s waterways has surged in recent years with more than 33,000 people opting to live on the water permanently, according to the Canal and River Trust. This trend has been largely concentrated in the South East, although growth has subtly been observed in the waters around Liverpool. Whilst rising property prices in London may have coincided with a 50% increase in the number of capital city dwellers living aboard houseboats during the last five years as buyers search for cheaper alternatives, here in Liverpool other factors may also be helping to drive demand. Convenience, accessibility and a sense of community on the city region’s waters add to the benefits of freedom that houseboat

living can bring, as homely vessels can operate on canals and rivers. These days the layouts, fixtures and fittings are not too dissimilar to houses on land, and boats on the market vary from those with engines to permanently moored options without. Boat buyers can also choose from converted empty hulls and Dutch barges which offer spacious living conditions, to narrow boats and yachts which can provide for a more opulent lifestyle. Such is the increasing demand for houseboat living here in the city region that Liverpool Marina, for one, is currently developing 50 additional berths. The extension will increase the marina’s existing stock of 350 serviced and un-serviced berths to cater for a greater number of water-based residents looking to use the waterfront site.

HOUSEBOAT LIVING

“SOME HOUSEBOATS OFFER GREATER SQUARE FOOTAGE AND MORE LATERAL SPACE THAN A ONE-BED FLAT IN LIVERPOOL.” WHY LIVE ON A HOUSEBOAT? Many view houseboats as an increasingly attractive alternative to bricks and mortar. After living on land for many years Elizabeth Appleton now occupies Sleepy Jean, a wide-beam canal boat, and has resided on the water for the past 11 years. Houseboats can offer many of the same facilities and features that on-land houses provide. Utilising limited space, Elizabeth and her husband transformed their boat, adding homely features including a corner bath, a wood burning fire and a spacious living area. “Some houseboats, such as a 60x12 widebeam canal boat, offer greater square footage and more lateral space than a one-bed flat in Liverpool,” says Andy Farrell of Bluepoint Marine Services which provides services at the Liverpool Marina complex. Boat owners may also be able to continue to live in the most exclusive postcodes in the area while escaping the accelerating house prices as, aside from some luxury houseboats, homes on water can often cost a fraction of the price of an on-land residence. “Individuals may cash in on their mortgage and purchase a houseboat,” adds Andy. While paying for a houseboat outright offers an element of debt-free living, home buyers who don’t have the ability to cash in on a mortgage may be able to secure specialist marine finance. Different to the more traditional housing mortgage, this route of funding a boat purchase offers loans of up to 75% of the value of the vessel but requires higher interest rates and shorter payback periods.

LICENSING THE LIFESTYLE Those who decide to purchase a houseboat need to ensure they have the correct licence to moor their home on the water. Moorings vary between ‘residential’, ‘linear’ and ‘online’, and each comes with its own services and restrictions. Residential moorings are designed for those who look to the water for a permanent primary, static residence; whereas linear moorings allow boat owners to moor along canals and rivers. Offline moorings, however, also allow boat owners to moor at marinas which have gained the relevant residential planning permission from the local authority. Linear mooring is cheaper but facilities, amenities and security are minimal. Offline moorings provide amenities like watering points, security, Wi-Fi and laundry facilities, though fees at these sites are typically higher and reflect the wider provision of services. Availability of these mooring facilities is also generally scarcer as a result. Continuous cruising licences are also available, giving boat owners the opportunity to explore the UK’s waterways and stop for the permitted duration of 14 days. Elizabeth spends her time continuously cruising the Leeds and Liverpool canal and credits the ‘community spirit’ along the route, which she says has made her time on the water more enjoyable. “It’s one of the best communities, and it’s better than living in a house,” says Elizabeth who says the neighbourly assistance she receives makes her day-to-day tasks easier.

ADDITIONAL COSTS While houseboats can offer more freedom for residents, this lifestyle isn’t without its costs. Boat owners are required to pay fixed, sunk and variable charges. Fixed costs include compulsory insurance, mooring fees, the sunk cost of the boat as well as the licence fees which are under the remit of the navigation authority, the Canal and River Trust. Sunk costs, which include the initial purchase price of a houseboat, range from a few thousand pounds for a dilapidated boat, to more than £1 million for a vast residence. Other fees depend on the usage of the boat and include fuel and gas consumption, wood and coal use and any additional maintenance on top of what is usually required. “A gas bottle costs £23 and lasts for three months. I also get my wood and coal locally,” says Elizabeth. “As for fuel, Sleepy Jean runs on red diesel which, considering I don't run the engine that often, costs me around £10 per week but would otherwise increase if I ran her more intensively.” Boat owners are also required to have a valid Boat Safety Scheme examination certificate. “This requirement is to check the gas, engine and fire extinguishers, as well as other safety equipment on the vessel, and is required once every four years,” she explains. Insurance is also an important outgoing. Fully comprehensive insurance provides cover for owners who permanently reside on the boat and keep their belongings on board. Third party insurance is also available, and is usually a prerequisite for obtaining a licence. In addition owners must consider licence fees, which depend on the size of the boat and whether a short-term or long-term licence is sought. Those who live on a houseboat which is moored permanently at a facility will need to meet further requirements including council tax contributions, though other licenced boats may be exempt from certain payments. Elizabeth has a continuous cruising licence and acknowledges that the difficulty in obtaining a permanent mooring space stems from demand for houseboats outpacing the supply of them. “I don’t have a permanent mooring licence, but I’m trying to find one,” says Elizabeth. “The continuous cruising licence costs £800 to £1,000 per year, which is significantly cheaper than berthing at a marina which could cost over £3,000.” Elizabeth advises owners to gather as much information as possible before buying a boat to ensure a mooring is secured before purchase. “The same due diligence that is done before buying a house should still be conducted before buying a boat,” she says. It is clear from Elizabeth’s experience that living on a boat is time consuming, though this could be seen as a small price to pay for the unique way of life on offer. Houseboat owners are also encouraged to allocate around 10% of the value of their boat per year in contingency funds to cover any unexpected costs that may arise, such as maintenance and repair work according to waterside property specialist River Homes.

NEWS NWPAs LINES UP A ‘NIGHT TO REMEMBER’ An evening of glamour, celebrations and surprises is said to be in store.

Preparations are underway to make this year’s NWPAs “a night to remember” now that the entries are in. The glittering awards ceremony will celebrate a year of achievements across the North West’s residential and commercial property sectors when it takes place on 20 October. With an esteemed panel of expert judges now getting ready to work their way through the high volume of entries received across the 12 categories, organisers are promising a night of Academy Awards-style glamour for the prestigious presentation night. Ahead of the event at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which is behind the awards, says: “The NWPAs offer a unique opportunity for the North West’s commercial and residential property industry to come together to celebrate a year of success. “This year’s event is set to be the best one yet and there are lots of surprises in store that will surely make it a night to remember.” A drinks reception sponsored by Furnish That Room and Precision Colour Printing will kick off the night of celebrations this year. Meanwhile Forth Homes is the headline sponsor in 2016, with category sponsors including Redwing Living, MSB Solicitors, Redrow Homes Lancashire and North West, Paul Crowley & Co, Yu Property Group, The Foundry Agency, PCS Law, UK Business Supplies, Bridging Finance Solutions, Countryside and Elliot Group.

Holiday rental landlords must be aware of the risks, says expert Liverpool property owners must be aware of the risks before offering their homes through holiday rental sites, warns a local legal expert. Sites like Airbnb are proving popular for boosting income and taking advantage of the Liverpool City Region’s tourism industry but Jenna Gall, a solicitor at Paul Crowley & Go, is urging landlords to ensure the right mortgage agreements and insurance policies are in place. She says: “From a legal perspective it’s essential you are fully aware of any potential implications in terms of your mortgage contract, insurance policy and tax. “For example, if you live in a block of apartments there will be wider rules and regulations to consider, even if you own your property outright. In some cases you could be

at risk of invalidating both your own and the building’s insurance policy which could lead to major problems should any issue arise. It is also important that you have landlords insurance in place.” Jenna adds: “You would also need to contact your mortgage provider to ensure your contract is suitable for your individual circumstances. If you have a mortgage registered against the property you run the risk of committing mortgage fraud if you deliberately stay with a residential mortgage whilst letting your property and not disclosing to your lender straight away. It will depend on your lender and individual circumstances but most lenders could require you to change to a buy-to-let mortgage with an increased rate or provide their ‘consent to let’, although there is likely to be a high fee for providing this.”

Jenna Gall urges property owners to have the right mortgages and policies in place.

NEWS COUNTRYSIDE UNVEILS FIRST OF THREE 2016 KNOWSLEY DEVELOPMENTS The first in a series of new Knowsley developments has been unveiled by housebuilder Countryside.

Countryside has brought four and five-bedroom homes to the market

The developer has released 35 four and fivebedroom homes at its Harrington Place scheme in Huyton, which will be one of three projects being brought to market in the borough this year. Homes at the former Huyton Leisure Centre site are available to reserve off-plan, with show homes due to be launched this autumn. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director for Countryside, says: “The launch of Harrington Place is the first of a number of developments coming soon to the area. This partnership with Knowsley Council will see 583 new homes built across the borough, all of which are designed to cater for demand in not only firsttime buyer homes, but also aspirational buyers and

families looking to upscale into a bigger property. “The interest that we’ve had in the new Knowsley homes has been phenomenal and we’re excited to embark on what is shaping up to be a highly successful venture with Knowsley Council to enhance the area.” Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, Councillor Mike Murphy, adds: “Our ambition is to provide more high quality homes in Knowsley to cater for the increasing demand from our residents and people who wish to move to the borough. Our partnership with Countryside is enabling us to deliver that aim.” The new properties will be available through initiatives including the government-backed Help to Buy and the developer’s part exchange scheme. Nadya Makrova and Matthew Skeels (centre) with Brown Turner Ross colleagues

GROWING LAW FIRM EXPANDS PROPERTY TEAM Liverpool City Region law firm, Brown Turner Ross has expanded its property team following a busy period for the sector. The company has added Matthew Skeels and Nadya Makarova to the department after reporting a 20% uplift in property transactions despite Stamp Duty rises earlier this year. Since 1 April, buyers purchasing additional homes and buy-to-let properties have faced a 3% increase under new Stamp Duty rules. Matthew, who qualified as a solicitor in 2013, will specialise in property transactions at Brown Turner Ross. Fellow new recruit, Nadya will also focus on the sector as she brings experience in residential and commercial property negotiations to the firm having qualified 10 years ago. Kevin Ross, director at Brown Turner Ross Solicitors which has offices in Liverpool, Southport and Birkenhead, says: “Nadya and Matthew are two highly skilled and experienced solicitors, a fantastic addition to the firm, who will guide Brown Turner Ross through this period of growth and help to shape the future of the property department.”

NEWS CALL FOR STUDENT LANDLORDS TO COVER SUMMER RISKS Liverpool’s student landlords are being urged to ensure the right insurance is in place to cover lengthy vacant periods as the summer holidays continue. According to experts from city-based Coeus Insurance, policies tailored to landlords’ individual requirements could “minimise the risk” posed by renting, as it’s often wrongly assumed that cover under ‘property owners’ policies is always the same. Directors Stewart Jordan and Gary Dunning say: “Landlords face further risk during the summer holidays as students head home with their Coeus Insurance directors Stewart accommodation left unoccupied during Jordan and Gary Dunning the summer break. “Most insurers, after a 30 day period of the property being vacant, will reduce cover provide expert advice and has the ability to arrange automatically to ‘fire, lightning, aircraft and suitable cover on your behalf. explosion’ resulting in the insurance cover provided “Furthermore, your broker should be being extremely limited. highlighting and discussing your policy coverage “We cannot stress the importance enough of and the implications this may have on your ensuring you are using an insurance broker that business. HOMES TO TRANSFORM SITE OF FORMER LITHERLAND PUB New homes will be built on the site of The Stand Park

ROW OF HOMES TO GO UP FOR AUCTION Bidders will have the chance to buy a Knowsley street at the next Sutton Kersh auction as one lot offers 14 homes. Made up of eight four-bedroom and six three-bedroom semi-detached properties, the investment opportunity on Marled Hey has a guide price of £1,100,000. The currently let properties in Stockbridge Village, which are being offered for sale on a private treaty basis, produce a net income of £101,000 per annum and have all been fully refurbished over the last two years. Cathy Holt, associate director of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: “It’s not often we have an opportunity of a large scale investment which provides such a high return, over a 10% yield per annum. “It’s a great opportunity for an investor to make a sizeable addition to their portfolio with a range of properties that don’t require any modernisation and offer a great yearly income.” Front driveways, rear gardens, double glazing, newly fitted kitchens and en suite showers and WCs are features of all 14 of the homes. The lot forms part of the catalogue for the forthcoming auction on 15 September, which will take place at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza. For more information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions.

The site of former Litherland pub The Stand Park will be transformed into houses when a new Forth Homes development gets underway this autumn. Building work is due to commence on the 14 properties in October after the housebuilder secured planning permission for the scheme. The four-bedroom semi-detached homes are expected to be available from April 2017, although off-plan reservations will be taken throughout the project. A spokesperson for Forth Homes, which is continuing to look for further development sites around the region, says: “The area has seen a lot of

regeneration lately with many new homes and education facilities being developed, so this is an exciting new scheme. “This site is particularly appealing as it is situated fronting open green space and is within walking distance of the golf course. It is also ideally located for shops and transport links in and out of the city.” Integrated kitchen appliances, gardens and offroad parking will be among the features of the new properties, with early off-plan buyers also having opportunities to choose some fixtures and fittings.

The Marled Hey investment opportunity will feature at Sutton Kersh’s next sale

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

THIS EXHIBITION IS THE FIRST TIME YOUR CREATIONS WILL BE ON DISPLAY OUTSIDE OF AMERICA WHY NOW? WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT? Well, I should say that I showed at Fashion Week in Mexico City many, many years ago and more recently as part of my lifetime achievement celebrations in my home state of Michoacán. But England is a totally different thing and Liverpool is a super long swim across the pond. I’ve never had an exhibition of this quality and I will be making new creations to mark the event. Expect colour and shine, but let’s not give too much away yet. I love surprises. British audiences are going to discover that they have seen some of my suits here and there in the entertainment world for years. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A DESIGNER? It was a calling rather than an ambition, and once I got started as a child I haven’t been able to get off the sewing machine or cutting table since. My brother Adolfo first taught me to sew when I was seven. I asked him out of sheer curiosity and that was my first experience. First I was making prom dresses for girls in my hometown when I was 12 and that grew into a business. All the girls begged their mums to let them get their prom dress from me; I was making quite a name for my individual designs. I never had the ambition of being a designer, I started making clothes for myself and loved it - I created my own style. I decided I would keep going, something inside clicked and I followed my calling. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR YOUR RHINESTONE-STUDDED CREATIONS HOW DID THEY BECOME YOUR TRADEMARK? It was a discovery for me that happened in California. I was watching the Rose Parade and I loved the flamboyance and sparkle. I wanted to add a touch of that to the western wear I was making. I don’t claim to be the only one doing it, but it has become something that people come to me for. After 60 years of practice some people see me as the only one doing it.

Brandon flowers

“I didn’t see those guys as 'The Beatles', I saw them as friends, in particular John - we would really philosophize together.”

WHAT CREATION ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF WHEN YOU LOOK BACK OVER YOUR CAREER? The creation of the 50 State Jackets for sure. It was an expression of my gratitude to the United States. I’m a great believer in giving back, not only for who I am but what I have achieved. Everything I used was original, hand drawn by me except the seals of the state. I started the project in 1986 and completed it in 2003. The project was a labour of love. I completed lots of research in libraries and by going from state to state. I’m not and never will be an internet man. America is not my native country but it's been very good to me, it gave me a great welcome and eventually I was asked to become a citizen. This made me feel welcomed, wanted and appreciated. AS THE EXHIBITION WILL TAKE PLACE IN LIVERPOOL PEOPLE WILL BE INTERESTED IN THE CLOTHES YOU MADE FOR THE BEATLES HOW DID YOU FIND WORKING WITH THEM? I measured them when they came to Nudie’s [tailors] in Hollywood and I got to know them from there. Each one of them had a different vibe for their own clothing. They were stylists of their own personalities. My brother Ringo [Starr] was in my store just the other week, he bought a beautiful black jacket. In the past I've made suits for him and his wife, several pieces for John [Lennon] and a lovely white jacket for George [Harrison]. I didn’t see those guys as 'The Beatles', I saw them as friends, in particular John - we would really philosophize together. DO YOU FEEL LIVERPOOL HAS SOME SIMILARITIES WITH YOUR ADOPTED HOMETOWN OF NASHVILLE? Nashville is growing rapidly at the moment and I think the music communities here and in Liverpool are very similar. I see a lot of people from Liverpool in Tennessee - the two have a marriage based on music. The Nashville Boogie attracted a lot of Liverpool folks too. I hope to see them when I am over in September.

“Ringo was in my store just the other week, he bought a beautiful black jacket. In the past I’ve made suits for him and his wife.” ‘MUSICAL THREADS - FROM MARIACHI TO MERSEY BEAT AND BACK’ WILL OPEN AT ST GEORGE’S HALL ON SEPTEMBER Manuel will be travelling over from Nashville to take part in an ‘audience with’ event hosted by Wayne Hemingway on 10 September to celebrate the opening of the exhibiton. A week earlier, on 3 September, a special concert celebrating the designer’s impact on the international music scene will take place at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall headlined by American singer-songwriter Leigh Nash.

& Best for...

BRAZILIAN With the 2016 Olympic Games getting underway in Rio, now is the perfect time to sample the flavours on offer from the home of samba dance, Copacabana beach and the world’s most successful national football team. Brazil’s food and drink delicacies are as exuberant and colourful as the Rio Carnival, and here are three top Liverpool City Region venues where you can sample them.

ACAI OF RELIEF Mojoes Juice Bar, Crosby

MIYAGI Bold Street, L1

The term ‘superfood’ gets bandied about a lot, but when it comes to Brazil’s acai fruit the buzzword is totally justified. From anti-aging effects to cardiovascular benefits, the attributes of the sweet South American export are well documented and they form the basis of delicious smoothies at Mojoes Juice Bar in Crosby.

A RODIZIO RIDE Fazenda, Exchange Flags All-you-can-eat rodizio-style restaurants are all the rage in samba country and you can pit your stomach against the never-ending meaty onslaught at Fazenda, a traditional Brazilian steakhouse located at Exchange Flags. Your taste buds will dance the samba when they sample the selection of meats, gourmet salad bar and wine list at this venue.

MIX AND MATCH Santa Chupitos, Slater Street The sweet, tangy caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail and they mix a mean one at Santa Chupitos in the Ropewalks area. Made from Brazilian spirit cachaça - a rum spirit made from sugarcane rather than molasses - a cool caipirinha is the ideal beverage for celebrating medal success as Team GB goes for gold at this year’s games in Rio.

It’s been just over a year since Miyagi burst on to Bold Street’s thriving food and drink scene - hard to believe given its popularity and following within the city. But with food described as ‘Japanese soul food meets ghetto Asian’, it’s no surprise the concept has been a hit. Having visited the restaurant a few times before, I was excited to return with my sister who had yet to visit. Perhaps in keeping with the fusion menu, the interior is a mix of old and new and a crossover of cultures. Miyagi has a modern, industrial vibe inside with contemporary east-meetswest décor. Ornate graffiti covers exposed brick walls while the lavish jade and gold painted ceiling gives the restaurant that added character and charm. After arriving at our table booth, my guest and I each chose the South Pacific cocktail (£7.50). Made with fresh passion fruit, apple, mint, Passao and Sailor Jerry, the cocktail was fruity, fresh and presented beautifully. The eatery serves a varied menu of sushi, small plates, ramen, buns and laksas. The soul food menu is perfect for

REVIEW BY HANNAH FOWLER sharing and trying new dishes and features small plates such as Korean chicken wings (£5.75), blackened cod (£6.95) and beef nori taco (£5.95). My sister and I ordered Mr M’s tiger prawn tempura (£6.95) and the fried crispy duck gyoza with hoisin (£5.75) to start. At Miyagi, food comes out as and when it’s ready, meaning all the food is hot, fresh and delicious. As one of my favourite Miyagi dishes, the prawn tempura didn’t disappoint. The huge prawns were encased in a crunchy batter and were perfectly cooked, while the mustard dipping sauce on the side gave the dish a hint of spice. Similarly, the crispy duck gyozas lived up to their name and were filled with seasoned shredded duck – even better when dipped in the accompanying hoisin sauce (it’s worth the struggle with the chopsticks). For my main, I decided on the sticky chilli beef with egg fried rice (£11.95). The crispy bites of chilli beef, topped with green chilli,

were packed with flavour and had just the right kick of spice. Served with fluffy egg fried rice, the dish was proper Asian comfort food which I could enjoy again and again. My sister opted for the chicken katsu curry with Mr M’s special fried rice (£10.50). The succulent chicken, coated in crispy breadcrumbs and served golden brown was topped with a rich Katsu curry sauce. The sweet sauce was perfectly balanced by the spicy infused rice which was full of authentic Japanese flavours. With no room left for dessert after the sharing starters and large mains, we decided it was the perfect excuse to return another day. With black sesame custard doughnuts (£4.95) and chocolate brownie spring rolls (£5.95) on the menu, it would be hard to resist. Miyagi offers a great food menu made up of varying styles of Asian cuisine. Teamed with friendly staff, delicious cocktails and cool interiors, it’s definitely worth a return trip.

POKÉMON GO

Wild Caterpie are roaming free around Sefton Park, Squirtles and Krabbies are spawning at Albert Dock, and there have even been sightings of rarer Pokémon across the Liverpool region. The only way to ensnare these weird and wonderful creatures and tap into the latest digital fad is to download Pokémon Go for your mobile device and engage in some good old fashioned orienteering. Through the use of augmented reality technology, the app harnesses the camera on the player’s device to overlay digital Pokémon atop of real-world backdrops and these creatures can be trapped with a well-aimed Pokéball, a simple matter of swiping the screen. Kudos to Nintendo partner Niantic, the studio behind the app, for prising gamers from the comfort of their living rooms, but the potential of Pokémon Go stretches far beyond fresh air and exercise. Here in Liverpool, the social engagement opportunities the app presents were highlighted when the Pokémon Go Liverpool & Southport Facebook group reached almost 1,500 members within two weeks, and many of those who signed up forged friendships beyond the confines of the social network. Keen to build on the community spirit the game has generated, group moderator and local Pokémon Go expert Aaron Cameron arranged a bus trip enabling fans in the region to explore other areas to see which monsters are hiding there, as well as taking advantage of the free WiFi and USB chargers on Arriva’s latest vehicles. Around 30 budding Pokémon Masters turned up at Queen Square for the Pokébus tour, with a further 300 or so expressing interest when the experimental project was announced on Facebook. “I thought the Pokébus was a good idea because the mobile app itself uses a lot of power and consumes data,” Aaron tells Your Move. “Not everyone has portable batteries or unlimited data, but the new buses you see driving around in Liverpool have USB chargers and free Wi-Fi. “It made a lot of sense for people who want to explore other neighbourhoods to see what they can catch and those who want to get together with like-minded individuals to do it on those buses.” Arriva got wind of the Pokébus initiative and was keen to provide Aaron with advice about

health and safety, as well as imparting vital information about which buses are equipped with Wi-Fi and USB chargers and the routes they journey along. Speaking to Your Move, the transport company’s interim marketing director, Mark Bosworth, admits the buzz around Pokémon Go has proven beneficial to the business, potentially convincing non-bus users to hop aboard in search of Pikachu and co. “I’m told there may be a follow-up event and of course we’d be delighted to be involved as the whole idea of doing it on a bus maximises both safety and social interaction and it also gives people a good reason to just get on and give bus travel a try,” he says. “It’s amazing how intimidated some people are about just getting on, and the reassurance of being in a group and then finding just how simple it is has real potential for converting non-users to bus travel.” Catching ‘em all is but a small part of

Il Forno’s Pokéball pizza

Pokémon Go as nurturing your pocket-sized monsters and battling other trainers at in-game ‘gyms’ is equally important. To be in any position to do this, players must visit ‘Pokéstops’ - situated at real-world landmarks to gather power-ups. This is where the game’s impact has really been felt since virtually every landmark in Liverpool, local or city centre-based, serves as an in-game Pokéstop and players are flocking to them as a result. According to Aaron, Liverpool’s most famous tourist attractions such as the Royal Liver Building and Albert Dock are the most fruitful hunting spots in the city, as well as the local parks. “The best places tend to be where there is a lot of mobile traffic. You can play the game in remote places, but you won’t find as much there,” he says. “The city centre is definitely the best place in Liverpool, and that’s not really a surprise.” Although the game is typically pushing locals and visitors to the city towards its most high profile attractions, it also flags up lesser known landmarks and places of historical interest. Did you know the first United States overseas embassy was located on Paradise Street? Or that Princes Park plays host to a donkey grave? You may have, but this writer didn’t before playing Pokémon Go. Cultural organisations in Liverpool are reaping the benefits of their status as in-game Pokéstops - the most obvious being an influx of visitors who may not otherwise have stopped by - and local businesses have also seen benefits. For instance, Duke Street restaurants Il Forno and Sapporo Teppanyaki have whipped up Pokémon-themed dishes in an attempt to capitalise on the monster hunter invasion after discovering the Super Lambanana statue on their doorstep is a Pokéstop. Il Forno general manager Donato Cillo, whose Italian eatery has created a Pokéballshaped pizza to attract hungry Pikachu enthusiasts, believes the Pokémon Go craze has boosted his business. "Every day we are seeing people playing Pokémon Go outside the restaurant and at least one person daily has come in to enjoy a pizza too,” he says. “Our waiters have overheard our guests' excitement as they catch Pokémon hiding around our wood-fired pizza oven or in the bar area. It really is amazing."
