CONTENTS

EDITOR’S LETTER As Team GB’s cyclists continue to make us proud out in Rio, we examine how the sport has gripped the city region and pick out some of the area’s best routes for a ride. Meanwhile our Hot Topic delves deep into the region’s past with a look at the buildings which have been honoured with a famous blue plaque. Plus three of Liverpool’s Paralympians take a break from their hectic training schedules to talk to Your Move about overcoming adversity and personal tragedy to compete for glory in Rio next month. And if that’s not enough we highlight some of the city’s stellar properties when it comes to balconies and hunt down Liverpool’s best bottomless brunches.

THIS YEAR MARKS THE TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE LONDON BLUE PLAQUE SCHEME WHICH PROVIDES A UNIQUE WINDOW INTO THE CAPITAL’S PAST WITH OVER PERMANENT SIGNS FEATURED ON BUILDINGS ACROSS THE CITY TO COMMEMORATE A LINK BETWEEN EACH LOCATION AND A FAMOUS RESIDENT THE SCHEME WAS EXTENDED TO INCLUDE THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION IN THE FIRST TIME IT HAD VENTURED OUTSIDE OF LONDON ALTHOUGH ULTIMATELY SHORT-LIVED A TOTAL OF PLAQUES WERE ERECTED - THE HIGHEST NUMBER OUTSIDE OF THE CAPITAL JOIN US AS WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE BUILDINGS ACROSS THE REGION WHICH HAVE BEEN HONOURED WITH THEIR OWN BLUE BADGE AND DISCOVER THE STORIES BEHIND THEIR FAMOUS RESIDENTS

WILLIAM AND ELEANOR RATHBONE

MENLOVE AVENUE L ERECTED DECEMBER The three-bedroom semi where John Lennon spent most of his childhood has become a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from across the world. Purchased in 2002 by Yoko Ono, and then donated to the National Trust, John lived at the South Liverpool home with his aunt Mimi and uncle George until the age of 22. A picture of the property was famously featured on the cover of Oasis’ 1994 hit single ‘Live Forever’ and was Grade II-listed by English Heritage in 2002 along with Paul McCartney’s nearby childhood home on Forthlin Road.

SIR RONALD ROSS THE JOHNSTON BUILDING QUADRANGLE L ERECTED NOVEMBER Indian-born British medical doctor Sir Ronald Ross became the first Briton to be awarded a Noble Prize when in 1902 he was rewarded for his groundbreaking discovery that mosquitoes transmitted malaria. The breakthrough came whilst Sir Ronald was employed in India with the Indian Medical Service. After 25 years of service, he came to Liverpool where he served for 10 years as professor and chair of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

PETER ELLIS FALKNER SQUARE L

ERECTED MARCH

GREENBANK HOUSE GREENBANK LANE L

ERECTED JULY This property, situated opposite Greenbank Park was home to two of Liverpool’s most famous philanthropic families. Creator of the first system of district nursing in the city William Rathbone and his daughter Eleanor, a suffragette and pioneer of the state-funded family allowance, lived at this cottage which was later bequeathed to the University of Liverpool. The family still retains a presence in the city with Rathbone Investment Management, based at the Port of Liverpool Building,

JOHN LENNON

JOHN BRODIE ULLET ROAD L ERECTED JULY A city engineer responsible for a swathe of landmark projects in his home city including the UK’s first ring road (Queens Drive), electric trams and the East Lancashire Road - John Brodie was reportedly most proud of his contribution to the evolution of football when, in 1889, he designed the goal net. Despite this breakthrough, his greatest achievement was unquestionably the building of the Mersey Tunnel, completed in 1934; it was at the time the world’s longest underwater road tunnel.

Considered by many architectural historians as one of the most influential buildings of its time, the modernist-style Oriel Chambers on Water Street, designed by architect Peter Ellis, is certainly one of Liverpool’s most striking structures. Born on what is now WilliamBrown Street in 1805, Peter won the right to design the five-storey building, which became one of the first in the world to feature a metal-framed glass curtain wall, in a competition.

SIR CHARLES REILLY CHATHAM STREET L ERECTED MARCH Largely credited with establishing the training of architects at university as an alternative to the old system of apprenticeships, Sir Charles Reilly was an influential figure in the careers of several esteemed figures of British architecture. The Liverpool School of Architecture became world famous under his leadership and was the first university school of its kind to design and run a RIBA-accredited degree course on the subject.

BLUE PLAQUES

NOEL CHAVASSE

FRANK HORNBY

ABERCROMBY SQUARE L ERECTED NOVEMBER

THE HOLLIES STATION ROAD L ERECTED JULY

An accomplished athlete who represented Great Britain at the 1908 Olympics, Captain Noel Chavasse served as a medic during the First World War, becoming one of only three men to have been awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross twice Awarded the first of his medals for gallantry shown during a battle at Guillemont in France in August 1916 where he attended to wounded soldiers under fire, Noel was posthumously awarded his second VC for what King George described as “most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty” a year later at Wieltje in Belgium.

BESSIE BRADDOCK ZIG ZAG ROAD L ERECTED NOVEMBER Born into a staunchly left-wing family, legendary Labour firebrand Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Braddock served as an MP for the Liverpool Exchange for over 20 years, becoming well known for her forthright and nononsense approach. During the Second World War, ‘Battling Bessie’ joined the Liverpool Ambulance Service and reportedly drove her ambulance through all 68 of the devastating air raids which struck the city. Made the first Freewoman of Liverpool months before her death in 1970, a statue of the MP stands in Lime Street station in company with Ken Dodd.

The first building to be awarded a blue plaque outside of London this modest Maghull semi was home to the creator of the wildly successful Meccano construction sets, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys. Frank, who was elected as a Conservative MP for Everton in 1931, started out making metal toys for his children – the breakthrough came when Hornby discovered that if he could make separate, interchangeable parts which could be fitted together, any model could be built from the same component.

WILFRED OWEN

SIR PATRICK ABERCROMBIE

ELM GROVE BIRKENHEAD ERECTED OCTOBER

VILLAGE ROAD OXTON ERECTED MARCH

Regarded by many as Britain’s greatest First World War poet, Wilfred Owen surprisingly spent much of his childhood here in the region. During his time in Birkenhead, Wilfred attended The Birkenhead Institute (BI) School, enjoyed swimming at the Argyle Street public baths and horse riding on New Brighton beach. Wilfred was already fascinated by the art of poetry during his time at the BI where his teachers referring to him as a “very favourite pupil”, obsessed with the desire to learn.

Pioneering town and country planner Sir Patrick Abercrombie spent 20 years in the region, serving as Professor of Civic Design at the University of Liverpool before leaving to become Professor of Town Planning at University College London (UCL). It was during this time in the capital where Sir Patrick completed his two most celebrated works, the County of London Plan (1943) and the Greater London Plan (1944). The reports pointed out the main direction infrastructure redevelopment in London should take following the bomb damage second world war.

JOSEPH MAYER PENNANT HOUSE BEBINGTON ERECTED JULY One of the lesser known figures in the region to be honoured, goldsmith and collector Joseph Mayer moved to Liverpool from Staffordshire aged 20 where he worked as an apprentice at his brother-in-law’s jewellery shop before setting up his own business. His vast collection covered a wide range of subjects and eras including Egyptian and Roman artefacts, English paintings and medieval art. In 1852 Mayer opened a museum in Colquitt Street, before bestowing his extensive collection to the Liverpool Museum (now World Museum) in 1867.

THOMAS HENRY ISMAY BEACH LAWN L ERECTED JANUARY As owner of the famous White Star Shipping Line, Cumbrian-born Thomas Ismay undertook a number a significant projects during his time in the region including the building of a private home in Thurstaston in Wirral and the creation of the innovative vessel Oceanic. However, it was of course the ill-fated HMS Titanic which his firm is best known for. Although Thomas died seven years before it set sail his son Joseph Bruce did make the journey - surviving the disaster.

SIR HENRY TATE HAMILTON SQUARE BIRKENHEAD ERECTED OCTOBER Chorley-born sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate began his career as an apprentice at his brother’s grocery ship in Liverpool. By the age of 36 he had chain of six shops across Merseyside. Sir Henry’s first venture into the sugar business came in 1859 and by 1872 he had his own refinery which, using new techniques which yielded increased levels of white sugar, was producing 400 tonnes a week. Following his death in 1899, Sir Henry’s collection of paintings was bequeathed to the nation, helping to form the nucleus of the Tate Gallery, now known as Tate Britain.

NEWS NORTHWOOD PARTNERS WITH BRITISH GAS TO OFFER LANDLORD SERVICES Northwood has announced that it has partnered with British Gas to offer landlords a range of benefits and services. The energy supplier’s repair and maintenance packages, which cover homecare, plumbing, drains, home electrics and kitchen appliances will be offered to the agent’s clients at a discounted price. Ruth Ledson, office manager at Northwood, says: “Our products are designed to offer landlords the same comprehensive cover currently provided direct by British Gas. The big difference being that we can discount the price, so it makes perfect sense for landlords that currently have British Gas cover to switch to one of our products. “Of course there is the added benefit that we will manage the whole process through our in-house maintenance team free of charge, so there is literally nothing for the landlord to do. We are also negotiating new products with British Gas that will be available exclusively through Northwood in the future to offer an enhanced level of service.” Northwood, which celebrated a decade of trading

NEWS FIRST-CLASS STUDENT LANDLORD ENTRIES FOR NWPAS The NWPAs has reported a high level of firstclass entries in the ‘Best Student Landlord’ category for this year’s event.

Awards will be presented during a glittering ceremony at Lutyens Crypt

This influx has been attributed to the city’s growing student population, together with the strong year-on -year demand for quality student accommodation. Kim O’Brien director of Move Publishing, which organises the awards, says: “Following yesterday’s (18 August) A Level results day, the race is on for students to secure their accommodation. From shared houses, student halls to purpose-built student accommodation in the city centre and surrounding areas, the options are vast. “The increased demand year-on-year for student accommodation in the city means that student landlords constantly need to raise the bar to stay competitive. We’ve seen a massive increase in not

only the number, but the quality of entries.” The Best Student Landlord accolade is sponsored by Redwing Living and is awarded to the landlord who demonstrates outstanding service and accommodation for their student tenants. Forth Homes is this year’s headline sponsor, while MSB Solicitors, Redrow Homes Lancashire and North West, Paul Crowley & Co, UK Business Supplies, The Foundry Agency, Elliot Group, Bridging Finance Solutions, Yu Property Group, Countryside, PCS Law and Redwing Living have backed individual categories. Furnish That Room and Precision Colour Printing will sponsor the drinks reception. The NWPAs will be presented at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on 20 October.

THE KEEL SET TO LAUNCH YOGA AND CLEANING SERVICES Waterfront development The Keel is launching new services for residents with yoga classes and flat cleaning on the way. Both are set to begin in September, following the introduction of personal training sessions for tenants at the building’s on-site gym earlier this month. Stephen Rogers, portfolio manager at Touchstone, which manages the scheme says: “We’re looking to launch the yoga classes in the month of September off the back of the personal training sessions and start up a cleaning service for residents, offering the tenants a reduced rate for internal unit cleans.” Touchstone has enlisted the help of the cleaning firm which tends to The Keel’s communal areas to provide residents with the in-unit service at a discounted rate. The personal training sessions are provided by 3D Leisure, the company which handles the gym inductions for new residents at The Keel’s on-site fitness centre. Stephen adds: “The personal training sessions kicked off on 11 August and we’ve had fantastic feedback from residents so far. We’ve opened up a few more sessions so we can meet the demand for them.” The Keel has new reached 100% occupancy across all units, with each flat having been rented out at least once since the apartment complex opened its doors last September. For more information call 0845 266 0025.

Liverpool City Rents managing director Sam Tumilty

LIVERPOOL ESTATE AGENT UNDERGOES REBRANDING Merseyside agent Liverpool City Lets will now be known as Liverpool City Rents following a rebranding. Managing director Sam Tumilty explains the renaming is due to circumstances beyond the firm’s control, but is quick to point out that it’s business as usual for the city centre company. He says: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, it is with regret that Liverpool City Lets has had to change its trading name to Liverpool City Rents. Liverpool City Rents is still located in its fantastic city centre office with the same great staff, offering the same great service.” Based on Sankey Street, Liverpool City Rents specialises in both the student and residential housing sectors, finding homes for tenants and occupants for its landlord clients. The company’s two directors have almost 20 years of experience in the lettings and property development markets between them. For more information call 0151 668 0303.

HELP TO BUY BOOSTS FIRST-TIME BUYERS AT FAZAKERLEY SCHEME Laura and Josh at their Queen Mary Place home

The government’s Help to Buy scheme is helping more young people get on the property ladder at Countryside’s Queen Mary Place development. Recent UK mortgage figures suggest the age of average first-time buyers is lower than ever before – a trend which is being replicated at Queen Mary Place. Local couple 23-year-old Josh Austin and 26year-old Laura Leguen recently purchased their first home together at the Long Lane scheme. The couple had planned to move abroad but decided that the independence of owning their own home would provide them with more security for the future.

Josh says: “We knew that we wanted to buy this year, but we didn’t expect to find somewhere so quickly. “We’re both young and in good jobs, so buying a property seemed like a natural step and a smart investment for the future.” Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, adds: “We’ve seen many young people in Liverpool come through the government initiative since its launch, which just serves as a testament to the opportunities and lifestyle that the city has to offer young professionals.” For more information about Queen Mary Place visit www.queenmaryplace.co.uk.

A FIRST LOOK AT THE ALCHEMIST

Dozens turned up for the event

A cocktail brews on a bunsen burner

Y

our Move was given a sneak peek at Liverpool city centre’s latest upmarket cocktail bar and restaurant The Alchemist ahead of its opening earlier this week. The Brunswick Street establishment, where the drinks are served fresh off the Bunsen burner or billowing a plume of evaporated dry ice, is the company’s sixth UK branch. The Alchemist’s interiors are stylish, bathed in a warm coppery glow with Masonic imagery adorning the walls to add a dash of quirkiness to the venue. With a menu modelled after the periodic table and cocktails served in beakers and chemistry flasks, the bar comes across as a hybrid of nightspot and luxurious science lab, and the mixed drinks its staff whip up are as much about showmanship as the flavours they offer. The Alchemist has a chemistry theme

OPPORTUNITY LIVERPOOL’S PARALYMPIC HOPEFULS INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW

THE RIO OLYMPICS MAY BE APPROACHING ITS FINAL LAP BUT THERE ARE SCORES OF ATHLETES WAITING ON THE STARTING BLOCKS FOR THEIR OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE AT THE PARALYMPICS THIS BIGGEST EVENT ON THE DISABILITY SPORTS CALENDAR IS GUARANTEED TO INCLUDE IMPOSSIBLE FEATS TALES OF TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY AND MOMENTS WHICH TRULY EXEMPLIFY THE RESILIENCE OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT WITH THE TOURNAMENT FAST APPROACHING

YOUR MOVE HAS TRACKED DOWN A TRIO OF PARALYMPIC HOPEFULS FROM THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION WHO ARE LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FINALS WITH EAGER ANTICIPATION

Jamie Burdekin

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS Former Royal Marine Jamie Burdekin was paralysed from the waist down following a car crash in Liverpool in 2000 aged 21, but has since found great success as a wheelchair tennis player. A veteran of the sport, Bootleborn Jamie represented Britain at the last two Paralympics and has numerous tournament triumphs to his name, including a bronze medal in Beijing.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN PREPARING FOR THE PARALYMPICS IN RIO? “I played in the British Open to feature in one final tournament before the Paralympics and trained hard for that. I’ve been taking it tournament by tournament and it’s been going well. “I’ve got a great team around me and everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet and striving for the same goal. I’m going into the games confident and not taking anyone lightly. My plan is to take it game by game, and match by match.” YOU’RE A VETERAN OF THE SPORT WITH TWO PARALYMPICS UNDER YOUR BELT DO YOU FEEL LIKE A MENTOR TO YOUR YOUNGER TEAMMATES? “Yeah, I suppose so. The younger players approach me with questions and I tend to room with them a lot, so I try to advise them the best I can. I feel that I have to be professional because they’re looking up to me, so I’m just making sure I’m doing everything right, from my warming up to my matchplay and attitude. “The main piece of advice I’ve given to the youngsters who are competing in the games for the first time is basically just to enjoy it.”

HOW DOES BRITAIN’S CURRENT WHEELCHAIR TENNIS TEAM COMPARE TO THE ONES AT PAST PARALYMPICS? “The squad compares favourably in terms of potential, ability and experience. Some of our younger players featured at Beijing at 16 years of age, so I think experience is going to play a big part but the team’s ability has improved as well.” AT WHICH POINT IN YOUR CAREER DID YOU REALISE YOU COULD GO RIGHT TO THE TOP IN WHEELCHAIR TENNIS? “When I got the opportunity to play for my country in 2004 it opened my eyes to the potential of wheelchair tennis but I didn’t take it seriously until a year before the games in Beijing. When I won the bronze medal there it opened so many doors for me and I started believing in myself and realised I could have a good future in the sport. I assembled a good team around me, got a few sponsors on board, and things kicked off from there.”

TALENT IN THE CITY

Sean Highdale FOOTBALL

© Michael Loveder

Sean Highdale was a Liverpool FC academy prospect before a devastating car crash which claimed the lives of two of his friends left him critically injured. After intensive rehabilitation, Sean was able to return to the sport he loves and is set to represent Team GB’s Cerebral Palsy football team in Rio.

Jack Hunter-Spivey TABLE TENNIS

Born and raised in Anfield, table tennis ace Jack Hunter-Spivey is the only player ever to win the junior, senior and open British titles in the same year. A wheelchair user due to cerebral palsy, Jack narrowly missed out on selection for London 2012 and is relishing the opportunity to take part in his first Paralympics in Rio.

WHAT DOES HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO REPRESENT YOU COUNTRY AT A MAJOR SPORT MEAN TO YOU? “To represent your country at the highest level is the greatest achievement for any sportsperson and I’ll be incredibly proud to wear that shirt in Rio. Missing out on the London games put a fire in my belly to make it to Rio and do everyone proud. To qualify for the finals was a great personal achievement.” WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS FOR RIO? “As Rio is my first games I’m after experience but equally I know I can beat anyone on my day. I’ve defeated some of the top players in the world, so if I play my best I could go far, but I don’t really have any personal goals other than to play the best table tennis I can.”

ARE THERE ANY OLDER PLAYERS IN THE TABLE TENNIS SQUAD WHO HAVE MENTORED YOU? “In the team there’s a wealth of experience and the older players have helped me a lot. Just with things like what the village is like, what kit you have to wear - little things you wouldn’t necessarily know in advance. My teammates have been a massive help to me, not necessarily the individual players but the squad as a whole.” HOW DO YOU RATE THE TABLE TENNIS SCENE HERE IN LIVERPOOL? “Around Liverpool we have a really good setup. I started playing in Widnes at Halton Table Tennis Club but have also played in the Liverpool league, which is full of top clubs, experienced players and really strong. I definitely recommend getting involved. “I don’t come back too often because I’m training fulltime but when I’m in the area I try to train at Halton and support local table tennis tournaments like the Liverpool Open.”

HOW HAS COMPETING IN PARALYMPIC SPORT HELPED YOU COME TO TERMS WITH THE INJURY YOUR SUFFERED? “Getting the opportunity to get involved in Paralympic sport has helped me massively physically and mentally. It gave me the incentive to keep my body fit and strong - and most of all stay positive. It was hard, going through what I went through but this has given me a massive boost and I’m loving every minute.” HOW IMPORTANT A ROLE DID LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB PLAY IN YOUR REHABILITATION? “I really don’t think I would have been able to do it without them. I was sent to the best doctors and surgeons in the country and received the best physiotherapy. They kept pushing me to get to where I am today.”

ARE THERE ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES FOR BUDDING PARALYMPIC ATHLETES IN THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION? “London 2012 really raised the profile of all Paralympic sport. The FA is involved is doing a lot of work engaging people with disability in football at both grassroots and elite level. The County FA in Liverpool has received funding to appoint a dedicated disability officer who is tasked with developing opportunities to play football at a local level.” HOW ARE YOUR PREPARATIONS FOR RIO GOING? WHAT DOES A TYPICAL TRAINING DAY INVOLVE IN THE RUN-UP TO THE GAMES? “My preparations are going well, I’m feeling as fit as I have for a long time and can't wait to put on the Paralympics GB shirt. Training is very intense, whether we are at a camp or at home. Each of us has to make sure we are as fit as we can be when we go to Rio. Nobody wants to have any regrets and let anyone down and I’m sure everyone is giving their all.”

THE RIO PARALYMPICS WILL TAKE PLACE BETWEEN AND SPETEMBER

& Best for...

BOTTOMLESS BRUNCH They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but surely the next best thing is a bottomless brunch, an indulgent prenoon banquet where the only limitation is the capacity of your belly. A growing number of Liverpool establishments are offering these all-youcan-eat-and-drink feasts and we’ve picked out three places in the city that are doing them best.

VIEWS ARE IN PanAm, Albert Dock

SANTA MALUCO

Castle Street, L2

The only thing better than filling your face with a bottomless brunch is doing so against one of the most picturesque backdrops in Liverpool. You can enjoy both at the Albert Dock-situated PanAm, which serves up unlimited Mimosas, Bloody Marys and prosecco alongside its luxurious two-course brunches between 11am and 4pm on Sundays.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK The Baltic Social, Parliament Street The beer and prosecco never stop flowing when bottomless brunch is served at Baltic Triangle venue The Baltic Social. Those who book in on the last Sunday of the month can pit their stomach against hot and cold platters loaded with everything from croissants to fried eggs, which are replenished until every member of the party is stuffed.

MUM’S THE WORD Ma Boyle’s, Tower Gardens A historic pub that dates back to 1870, Ma Boyle’s is an old-school alehouse which puts a traditional spin on the bottomless brunch concept, offering Eggs Benedict, omelettes, waffles, pancakes and a ‘build your own’ full English breakfast, with free-flowing prosecco to sweeten the deal. Customers can book in for this feast through Groupon, Wowcher or Living Social.

With Salt Dog Slim’s and Santa Chupitos being my usual haunts come a Friday evening, I was delighted when I heard the team behind them was bringing a fresh new venue to the city: Santa Maluco. Serving up Italy’s best export (pizza, of course) with a distinctive splash of Brazilian flair, I couldn’t wait to try the Graffiti Spirit Group’s latest offering as my date and I ventured to the city’s commercial district. Stepping inside we knew we were in for a good evening. The lively décor nodded to Brazil’s vibrant urban scene while maintaining that all important hint of laidback Liverpool cool. Keen to sample the cocktail selection I opted for a São Paulo Spritz (£8.50); a refreshing mix of Cachaça (Brazil’s most popular spirit), Aperol, orange and rhubarb, topped off with a healthy dose of prosecco. Ever a lover of gin, my dining companion opted for a St Germain Punch (£7.50) gin, elderflower, fresh lime and Peychaud’s bitters topped with Ting and cream soda – an ode to the classic cola cubes of my childhood. Santa Maluco serves up its pizza rodizio style (£15 per person or £3 per slice) -

REVIEW BY SARAH BROWN an all-you-can-eat concept where slices keep on coming throughout the meal, allowing diners to sample all of their favourite toppings. Cooked in a wood fired oven, Santa Maluco’s pizzas guarantee an authentic taste and a textbook crispy base. With Rio De Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer watching over us we tucked into our first slice, ‘the Davide’. A simple combination of creamy buffalo mozzarella, fresh green pesto and cherry tomatoes - the perfect slice to start with. Our second helping, ‘the BBQ club’, promised pulled pork and marinated chicken specially imported across the city from Slim’s Pork Chop Express. Needless to say hopes were high. With just the right amount of tang from the BBQ base, this was a firm favourite of the evening. Dubious at first, we opted to try a slice of ‘What the duck?’ - shredded duck, spring onions, cucumber and char siu - which can often be meagre in coverage, but were suitably impressed by the generous level of toppings on Santa Maluco’s

offering. Close to defeat we tried ‘the American’, topped with cuts of spinata, pancetta, and spicy sausage. Spicy meat balanced with a cool requeijão sauce was the winning combination of the night. In need of another drink after the heat from ‘the American’ I opted for a zesty El Diablo – Tequila, cassis and fresh lime topped with ginger beer – as my dining companion sipped on a refreshing blueberry Daiquiri from the project blender selection. Mixed with ice, this was the perfect summer option. Never ones to turn down pudding we ended the evening with a slice of dessert pizza – a classic pizza base topped with Nutella, cookie crumble, blueberries, peanut butter and a dash of whipped cream for good measure. The selection of dessert pizzas on offer changes daily, and I challenge anyone to resist. The relaxed ambience, social style of dining and, of course, mouth-watering pizza, make for a winning combination. Rodizio? It’s the future, trust me.

CYCLING IN THE CITY REGION Chris Boardman MBE

Cycling has enjoyed a remarkable rise in popularity in recent years. Much of its considerable appeal stems from its affordability, convenience, accessibility, and connectivity relative to other modes of transport. In an attempt to boost cycling journeys in the city by 10% by 2025, Liverpool City Council has developed an extensive 12-year ‘Cycling Revolution’ pledge. It’s aims to increase the number of people cycling once a week from 15,000 to 45,000 by 2017, alongside investment in on-road infrastructure and an increase in the number of bike safety schemes provided at local schools. Princes Park roundabout has been one such destination chosen for investment - with improved signage and better road markings leading to a 35% increase in bike usage at the junction. This follows the installation of cycle paths on Leeds Street, connecting the road directly to the commercial district. “With the money we are spending on improving roads in the city, we aim to put Liverpool at the forefront of building sustainable transport into everyday life, allowing us to improve the health and fitness of local people and visitors,” explains a council spokesperson. As a result of the improvements the council observed an 11.9% increase in cycling across the region in the 12-month period up to March 2014, and a 62% increase since 2006. Local schools are also reaping the benefits. Bikeability, a cycle training initiative aimed at improving children’s road cycling skills, has been offered free to all primary school pupils in an attempt to increase the amount of children cycling. In 2015, over 3,000 Liverpool pupils took part. The council is keen to stress the importance of organised events such as the annual Sky Ride, which has attracted tens of thousands of participants and takes place in Sefton Park this month. The region boasts a range of facilities which provide opportunities for all ages and abilities to engage with the sport. Sefton Council’s facilities include a 400m athletics track, a £300,000 1km cycling circuit and a fitness studio which forms part of the £5.5m Litherland Sports Park. Elsewhere in the region, British Cycling, NHS Knowsley and Sports England have funded a £1.4m facility in Knowsley, which includes a 400m velodrome and BMX track.

ING CHANG

GEARS

THE CITY REGION OFFERS A DIVERSE SET OF ON-ROAD AND OFF-ROAD ROUTES, RANGING FROM RURAL AND SEMI-RURAL TO FULLY URBANISED AREAS.

Regional initiatives have also been crucial in determining bike usage. In 2014, Liverpool City Council launched the citybike scheme which is now the UK’s largest public bike hire initiative outside of London, with up to 1,000 bikes in circulation across 140 locations. To date 850,000 miles have been covered by 180,000 hires. Hoylake-born Olympic gold medallist Chris Boardman MBE was influential in helping to establish the citybike scheme in his home region. “I got involved in setting up the citybike scheme in Liverpool as I saw it as one of the tools – albeit a lesser one – which would inspire people to get around this wonderful riverside city on two wheels,” says Chris. It was hoped that the citybike scheme would also encourage a greater provision of infrastructure to support cyclists.

“I got involved with city bikes as I saw it as one of the tools which would inspire people to get around this wonderful city on two wheels.” “I thought visible and easily accessible bikes would act as a catalyst for the city’s leaders to invest in cycling as a viable way of getting around by producing joined-up protected space,” he adds. Borne out of the region’s increased interest in the sport, Ryde coffee house has sprung up in The Courtyard of Cains Brewery Village. Nestled next to Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle, Ryde blends the unique style of a conventional coffee shop with a bike workshop and small retail outlet. Run by a trio of former Bikeability instructors; Don Maclean, Ian Magill and Natasha Rocks, the owners share a mutual love of cycling. “If people have easier access to bikes there is a greater chance they will use them,” says Don. As a Bikeability instructor, Don has first-hand experience of how the scheme encourages participation, but cites the importance of further

initiatives to ensure sustainable growth. “Providing young people with the facilities and information to increase their skills and awareness means there is a greater chance they will ride as an adult, which can only be a good thing.” Don credits the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Paralympic achievements and Team Sky’s Tour de France success, together with the region’s attractions, as driving the recent upswing. As for the future, Chris feels the city region still has the capacity to benefit from further rounds of productive investment, providing the funds are allocated to enhance safety. “The people we want to attract are current non-cyclists, just normal people doing normal things in normal clothes, but these people won’t get out of their cars unless they feel safe.” Chris reveals that he is saddened by what he sees as a lack of vision in creating safe space to cycle in Liverpool and in Wirral, where he lives. “Liverpool city leaders, it’s over to you, what do you want your city to be like in the future for our kids, a place for people or a place for traffic?”

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

SCENIC RIDES

On the border of the city region, Sir Bradley Wiggins has competed several times in Bickerstaffe’s 10mile time trial event. The local region is also a particular training hotspot for some of the nation’s other professional cyclists, including Wirral’s own Stephen Cummings who has recently competed in the men’s Olympic Road Race and the 2016 Tour de France.

The Liverpool Loop Line forms part of the award-winning Trans Pennine Trail and is a popular destination for less experienced riders and families. Tracing the abandoned British Rail track running from Halewood to Aintree, the route offers 13 miles of flat terrain through a ‘green corridor’ around East Liverpool.

The five mile route starting from the Liver Building along Otterspool Promenade takes in stunning views of the River Mersey and beyond. Elsewhere in the region, Sefton and Calderstones Park, the Mersey Forest, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Formby and Crosby beach, the Cheshire Lines and Wirral all provide picturesque settings for a relaxed ride.
