EDITOR’S LETTER Halloween is upon us and Liverpool isn’t one to miss out on the spooktacular festivities. We’re taking you on a tour of some of the city’s haunted sites as they prepare to transform into tourist attractions for the occasion, providing unique venues for top chilling events. Our Hot Topic will explore the area’s prominent Stuart-era properties which hark back to the days of the Gunpowder Plot, looking at the impact they’ve had on local architecture. We also catch up with writer Frank Cottrell Boyce as he prepares to delve into David Bowie’s reading list at the Liverpool Literary Festival. Plus we’ll be reflecting on a busy time for the property industry as we bring you all the pictures from this year’s spectacular NWPAs celebrations and the Landlord and Property Show 2016.

remainder to be delivered by the end of 2019. Helen Griffin-Booth, director at Bluerow, says: “The development of Chinatown is perhaps the most exciting project underway in Liverpool and we are delighted to be working with a number of other agents on this landmark scheme. The site is just a stone’s throw away from our Duke Street office so the Bluerow team have a keen eye on the development. “The development is central to the city’s role within the Northern Powerhouse and is especially ripe for overseas investment. I think the new Chinatown will go a long way in putting Liverpool firmly on the radar of overseas investors.”

Affordable housing provider Redwing Living has expanded its online presence with the launch of official Facebook and Twitter accounts. Details of available homes, information and advice for the firm’s current residents will be available through the new social media channels. Katie Jones, communications manager at Redwing parent company The Regenda Group, says: “Redwing Living is one of the leading suppliers of shared ownership homes across the North West. They believe that affordable is beautiful, and have been helping people onto the property ladder for almost 30 years. “If you’re looking for an apartment in the city or a family house in the country, give them a ‘like’ and a ‘follow’!” Redwing specialises in shared ownership and private rented properties and has more than 2,000 homes on its books across the region. The company also provides leasehold and apartment block management and sales services for corporate clients in the North West. It can be found on Twitter @RedwingLiving and on Facebook under Redwing-Living.

The firm, which has recently relocated to a new office on Picton Road, is now planning to expand its team to deal with the increased portfolio. The new office will also allow the agent to offer a better standard of service to its tenants, according to managing director Paul Nicholson. Paul says: “Our portfolio now comprises over 100 properties, which is a huge achievement. “The new office will allow for the expansion of our team with the appointment of property managers for effective management of our portfolio in addition to a dedicated maintenance team. “We are investing heavily not just in our projects but back into the business for the benefit of our tenants.” The firm has also recently acquired Luxor Court in Kensington, comprising 12 large flats, which are set to be renovated to a high standard early next year.

LEGACY OF THE STUART ERA

S

tuart England was moulded in the fires of civil war, gunpowder treason and glorious revolution, and bricks and mortar mementos from this volatile period can be found dotted around Liverpool. The oldest of these buildings is the unique residential property Tue Brook House on West Derby Road, a Grade II-listed farmhouse which dates back to 1615. Thought to have once been occupied by yeoman farmer John Mercer and later a local wheelwright, this age-old structure was under the ownership of Liverpool City Council until recently and was considered one of the most unusual council houses in the country. Parts of the former farmhouse contain sections of its original ‘wattle and daub’ construction - a 6,000-year-old building technique combining timber framework with earth, animal dung and straw - which can be glimpsed through glass panels. There’s even a priest hole built into the chimney breast as an eternal reminder of the religious persecution which was rife in Stuart Britain. Although Tue Brook House and its historic significance often goes unnoticed by the countless motorists who pass along West Derby Road each day, the Stuart era’s lingering presence in Liverpool city centre is more prominent. Determined to outdo their Tudor predecessors, Stuart architects had a penchant for the elaborate, and this trend is illustrated by the magnificent Bluecoat, the city centre’s oldest building. Built in 1717 as a charity school, this Grade I-listed landmark is a fine example of baroque Queen Anne style design, following in the tradition of legendary English architect Sir Christopher Wren. With its striking façade, classical columns and ornate ox eye windows, it’s easy to see why the Bluecoat has influenced the form of other structures in the city centre and kept Stuart design principals alive in modern day Liverpool. "The high regard for the architecture of the Bluecoat is not a recent fad - in the late 1700s local landowners supported the extension and restoration of the building with the specific intention of preserving its much-loved façade,” explains Gavin Davenport, project manager on My Bluecoat, a heritage initiative which aims to digitise all of the building’s records. “The European and classical revival influences that inform the design of the Bluecoat are part of a broader enlightenment trend which are embedded in the architecture of the Georgian town.

Tue Brook House

The Bluecoat Chambers

“this architectural style permeates and persists. across liverpool you will see classical columns, ox eye windows, arches and keystones.” “This architectural style permeates and persists in Liverpool where other cities gravitate towards the 19th Century Gothic revival. Across Liverpool you will see classical columns, ox eye windows, arches and keystones which echo those of the Bluecoat." The Bluecoat, which has endured despite several proposed demolitions and incendiary bomb damage during World War II, has served as an esteemed arts venue since the Sandon Studios Society moved into the building in 1927. Whilst gearing up for its 300th anniversary which will be marked with a 300-day programme of special exhibitions throughout 2017 - heritage researchers uncovered evidence suggesting mason Edward Litherland and engineer Thomas Steers were the original masterminds behind the Bluecoat, solving a long-running mystery surrounding its construction. South of the city centre in an affluent suburb stands another grandiose manor from the Stuart period - Woolton Hall, a Palladian villa built by influential architect Robert Adam in 1704. Constructed from red sandstone sourced from a local quarry, Woolton Hall is regarded as one of Adam’s greatest undertakings and has played host to a number of famous residents during its 300-year history, including the Earl of Sefton and Liverpool shipowner Frederick Richards Leyland. The manor was extensively renovated in 1772 and went through a number of uses throughout the 20th Century before being abandoned. The bulldozers loomed, but a campaign by local activists to save the building was successful and it now holds a Grade I listing. These days, Woolton Hall is listed for sale as a development opportunity following a stint as a wedding venue and may yet become residential again, as the property is said to have attracted interest for private housing, older persons’ accommodation and boutique hotel use. Less than four miles away on Park Road in

Dingle, another sandstone memento from the Stuart age serves as a reminder of the religious strife which raged throughout the era. The ancient Chapel of Toxteth was founded in 1618 as a religious school by a group of Puritans who sought freedom in their worship, serving what was then an isolated rural community. This slate-roofed place of worship, which now holds Grade I-listed status, was partially rebuilt in 1774 at a time when the majority of its congregation were Unitarian. To this day, it continues to operate as a Unitarian chapel with services held every fortnight. Although only a handful of Stuart-era constructions remain in modern day Liverpool, the Stuarts may have had more influence in shaping the city than meets the eye, as booms in the coal and salt industries helped Merseyside grow exponentially, with taller buildings springing up. “One thing you come across frequently in records from the 17th and 18th centuries is how quickly Liverpool sprung up after the Civil War because of the growth in coal and salt,” says Dr Simon Hill, lecturer in history at Liverpool John Moores University. “This led to more people migrating into the town to find work and as a result more buildings were erected and the area became more densely populated.” Furthermore, it was at the end of the Stuart period in 1709 that work began on the Old Dock, a landmark development which helped Liverpool expand from riverside town to trade superpower. “The construction of Liverpool’s Old Dock also began in 1709 at the tail end of the Stuart period and that really stimulated the development of the town,” Simon adds. “If you’ve got all these ships coming into the docks you need to provide warehouses and docking facilities, and that has an impact on the landscape of the town it becomes more nautical in nature.” The rest, as they say, is history.

THE BIGGEST AND BRIGHTEST STARS OF THE NORTH WEST PROPERTY INDUSTRY WERE OUT IN FORCE FOR THE REVAMPED NWPAS

BEST STUDENT LANDLORD

BEST PROPERTY LAW FIRM

Sponsored by Redwing Living

Sponsored by UK Business Supplies

CARO STUDENT LIVING

PAUL CROWLEY & CO

Caro Student Living was named as the winner in an ultra-competitive category providing recognition within the North West’s booming student property market. The landlord, formerly known as Jamworks, impressed the judges with a number of developments across the city centre including The Bridewell, City Point and Shaw Street. “I’m absolutely blown away,” says Lee Darwen, operations director at Caro Student Living. “We really didn't expect it. That means so much to me and all the guys, I’m shocked and really happy!” Yu Property Group took second place with Luxor Estates completing the shortlist.

Paul Crowley, managing partner at Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, was “delighted” to accept the award for Best Property Law Firm for an incredible fifth year out of six. “It's a remarkable performance by the conveyancing team and we're delighted to be so successful yet again,” he says. The law firm, which celebrated 25 years of trading in 2016, was commended for its high levels of performance and innovative approach to customer service. MSB Solicitors was named runner-up on the night with Kirwans also shortlisted.

COUNTRYSIDE

RIVERSIDE HOME OWNERSHIP

Back and bigger than ever, the NWPAs, previously known as the Your Move Property Awards, was significantly expanded for its 14th year in order to recognise the commercial and residential property sector across the whole of the North West. Taking place at Lutyens Crypt, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, over 250 guests enjoyed a glamorous cocktail reception before sitting down to a luxurious meal and the awards presentation hosted by local comedian and actor Neil Fitzmaurice, followed by live music and dancing.

Fighting off fierce competition in this category, housebuilder Countryside took home the Regeneration Award for its New Broughton Village development in Salford. The scheme, on the outskirts of Manchester, has seen 180 acres of previously run-down land completely transformed and played a key role in the £500 million regeneration of Lower Broughton. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, highlighted the strong relationship between the housebuilder, Salford City Council and the local residents as a key factor in the development’s completion. “It has been a really successful scheme and we’re really, really pleased with it,” he says. Runner-up New Pendleton from Together Housing, Tempest by Capital and Centric and Willowbrook Hospice were also highlighted on this year’s shortlist.

All three projects shortlisted for this award impressed the judges with their innovative use of space and for showing what can be achieved through “clever design and careful planning”. However it was Riverside Home Ownership’s (RHO) Naylorsfield Drive development in Lee Valley which came out on top. RHO began working in Lee Valley over a decade ago, leading the on-going revitalisation of the neighbourhood. “We are absolutely thrilled,” says David Robinson, marketing and communications business partner at RHO. “The level of competition this year especially has been really high so we’re very proud.” Forth Homes was named runner-up for its Melling Road scheme in Aintree, followed by Halton Housing Trust & Denovo Design for the Crossway development in Widnes.

PROPERTY APPRENTICE

BEN FINCH  REDROW

ABODE

It was a case of déjà vu in the Best New Home category with Countryside retaining the award it picked up in 2015 and celebrating its second win on the night. The Glasson at Barrowcroft Green in Standish came out on top with an ecstatic Peter Vella admitting he was surprised with the result, “I actually thought Redrow was going to win,” he says. “That’s a really nice development but to be fair The Glasson at Barrowcroft Green is a real standout for us.” PH Property Holdings’ Grove Place in Wimslow finished in second place with The Henley at Redrow’s Lucas Green in third.

The new Property Apprentice award celebrated an individual who has made a significant contribution to their workplace. Ben Finch, who is three quarters of the way through the second year of his three-year plumbing apprenticeship with Redrow Homes, came out on top and admitted he was shocked by the result. “It’s a bit of shock really,” says Ben. “It’s more of a credit to Redrow and the structure of its apprenticeship scheme. Although I’ve gone up and taken the award it’s something which the whole company can be proud of.” Charlotte Dorricott of Block Management & Property Specialists finished in second place with Dominic McGovern of SAS Daniels rounding off the shortlist.

One of the evening’s most coveted awards went to a familiar face in the shape of Abode, which has now taken home the big prize, in its various guises, for three years in a row. “We’re all made up to win it for the third year in a row,” says Mike Lynch, valuer at Abode on Allerton Road. The estate agent, which also has an office in Crosby, was praised by the judges for operating the best and most customer focused business. “Everybody’s hard work has paid off in the end and I’m delighted to be part of the three wins,” Mike adds. Abode came out on top ahead of Century 21, which finished in second place, with Reeds Rains completing the shortlist.

SHOW HOME OF THE YEAR

JUDGES’ SPECIAL AWARD

Sponsored by MSB Solicitors

Sponsored by Countryside

COUNTRYSIDE THE GLASSON AT BARROWCROFT GREEN

REDROW THE BLENHEIM AT HARTFORD GRANGE

The judging panel acclaimed the “very high standard” of entries in this category, highlighting the “outstanding quality” of the interior design and “great attention to detail” on display. Redrow’s The Blenheim at Hartford Grange was named the winner. The five-bedroom home impressed the judges with a number of luxurious design features including a walk-in wardrobe to the master bedroom and eye-catching bay windows. “We’re absolutely delighted,” says Anna EvansKerr, area sales manager for Redrow. “We’ve got three developments in Hartford and The Blenheim at Hartford Grange just shows the excellence and quality which we provide.” The Rufford at Countryside’s Barrowcroft Green was named runner-up with Redrow’s The Henley at Lucas Green completing the shortlist.

WILLOWBROOK HOSPICE

The final award of the evening was reserved for a development which has had a truly transformational effect on its local community. The Willowbrook Hospice in Prescot has cared for 7,500 patients and receives over 1,110 patients referrals a year. In order to meet demand, the organisation last year purchased a derelict building which had become somewhat of an eyesore in the area. Following an extensive transformation it was brought back to life and reborn as The Living Well - a multi-functional space which offers support for those facing the most difficult times in their lives, either as patients or carers “We're delighted,” says Neil Wright, chief executive of the Willowbrook Hospice, who accepted the award. “It’s going to help support people in the future and we’re very grateful to the judges for being able to recognise the work of the hospice.”

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY AGENT OF THE YEAR

THE JUDGING PROCESS Winners were chosen via a wide-ranging judging process by a respected panel made up by esteemed figures from across the North West’s residential and commercial sectors including Lesley Martin-Wright, CEO of Knowsley Chamber; Eric Wright, retail specialist & arbitrator; Alastair Shepherd, director at Falconer Chester Hall; Elaine Cunningham, owner of Elaine Cunningham Design Studio; Fiona Woodward-Kelly, owner of Wood Kelly & Co Ltd and James Glendenning, CEO of Greater Merseyside Learning Providers’ Federation (GMLPF). In the following three categories, winners were chosen by a panel of independent adjudicators, who assessed each entry on a variety of specific criteria and evidence-based factors including signs of growth, levels of customer service and client feedback: Property Apprentice; Best Property Law Firm and Residential Property Agency of the Year.

Old Haunts CA TC H THE SH IV ER S Liverpool city centre plays host to more ghost tales than a careerspanning collection of Stephen King stories; sinister myths which loom large over many buildings and landmarks. Legend has it that a screaming banshee once lurked around the Wellington Rooms on Mount Pleasant - a 19th Century hall which served as the city’s Irish Centre until its closure in 1997 and is now a sombre shadow of its former self. Across town, on an abandoned shadowy street, lies the remains of Cornwallis Street Swimming Baths - a public pool where the spirit of a young boy is said to have lingered since 1919. And let’s not forget Tower Building on The Strand, which is allegedly one of the most haunted locations in Merseyside. References to this imposing structure stretch back to 1256 but it was during the Napoleonic Wars that it gained infamy, serving as a jail where

4,000 French prisoners were incarcerated in the most ghastly, inhumane conditions. These days, Tower Building houses modern apartments but echoes of its gruesome past reverberate thanks to the number of supernatural occurrences residents are said to have reported, from the sound of chains being dragged down the stairways to a chilling atmosphere. Local ghost tour operator Shiverpool is doing its bit to ensure these urban legends endure, with a repertoire of street theatre-style performances enhanced by historical accuracy and a wardrobe full of genuinely creepy costumes. Shiverpool’s walking tours take steely-nerved punters to these ominous Liverpool landmarks as well as other haunted attractions - and between 29 and 31 October, the company’s Ghost Bus Tour is returning to spirit passengers away on a comedy-horror roadtrip.

LIVERPOOL’S HAUNTED HOTSPOTS

HO SP ITA L OF HO RR OR S Broken beds, rusted wheelchairs and discarded trollies litter the decaying wards of Newsham Park Hospital and rows of ‘naughty cupboards’ where misbehaving children were once locked away occupy its dusty attic. It’s easy to see why this Grade II-listed building in Tuebrook is considered one of Liverpool’s most eerie locations and is now a popular attraction among the region’s chill-seekers. The site was originally an orphanage for seamen’s children before becoming a sanatorium in 1879 and later a hospital for patients with severe mental health issues and the terminally ill. Now abandoned and in a state of disrepair, Newsham Park Hospital has had more than its fair share of alleged paranormal happenings over the years, dating back to its time as a medical facility. Such tales have drawn ghost hunters from across the country and

modern-day visitors to the former hospital have purportedly encountered everything from mysterious tapping noises to prods from unseen fingers and unexplained temperature drops. The public can sample Newsham Park Hospital’s oppressive atmosphere by booking a ghost tour through Haunted Rooms, which sees brave visitors explore the site’s darkest nooks and crannies overnight under the supervision of pro spook hunters. Those who prefer things that go thump, rather than bump, in the night can check out Newsham Park Hospital in all of its chilling glory and enjoy safety in numbers at Cream’s Cocoon @ The Asylum techno event on 29 October, during which DJs Sven Vath, Ilario Alicante, Tim Green and Jemmy will deliver hell-raising sets to revellers decked out in Halloween costumes.

ON HA UN TED HIL L

SP EK E NO EV IL There’s something about grand old halls that makes them prime real estate for spirits, and if the stories are to be believed, Speke Hall is no exception. This striking Tudor mansion sits on the banks of the Mersey and is surrounded by picturesque gardens, but one legend surrounding the site has cast a dark shadow on its history since the 1700s. Mary Norris - a descendant of Speke Hall’s original owner Sir William Norreys - is rumoured to have died in the manor under tragic circumstances and now haunts the spot of her demise. Hall staff and visitors over the last century claim to have spotted a translucent figure slinking about the tapestry room, an entity which has become known as the White Lady. The legend of the White Lady is one of many creepy tales from the Speke Hall archive and the building’s custodian, the National Trust, is keen to play up to the myths and keep them alive with regular ghostly attractions and spooky events. This Halloween, a series of haunting half term activities for youngsters will run between 26-30 October as part of the Spooky Speke School programme. If child’s play isn’t your thing, the Circus of Horrors event on 28 and 29 October is no laughing matter. This immersive experience is described as a “thrilling and horrific gothic adventure” in which guests must solve a mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young girl.

Across the River Mersey in the Wirral suburb of Bidston, one of the Liverpool City Region’s highest and arguably most haunted locations can be found. Bidston Hill is a 100-acre area of heathland and woodland which plays host to historic buildings and ancient rock carvings, but its beautiful views are offset against a sinister past. Local legends speak of everything from grisly murders and satanic worship, to ghost encounters and even werewolf sightings occurring there. The plot is also a hotspot for UFO sightings as many visitors have reported strange lights in the sky overhead. If that’s not enough, Bidston Hill hides more dark secrets underground, sitting on a network of subterranean tunnels built during World War II, which are said to have once been used by a coven of witches. These passages have since been sealed for public safety, and that’s probably for the best. Community group the Friends of Bidston Hill watches over this picturesque conservation area and assists with its upkeep. Its members have always embraced its haunted heritage, using it as a vehicle to raise the profile of the site as a Wirral tourist destination. On 31 October, the organisation will gear up for the witching hour with an evening of ghost stories told to a select group who book in early over mulled wine and hot chocolate.

TALENT IN THE CITY

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You’re going to be talking through David Bowie’s reading list at this year’s Liverpool Literary Festival. As a fan of his, how long have you been interested in that literary influence on his work? From the get-go. I’ve always felt very lucky that my teen idol was someone who read a lot and talked a lot about books and that crossover has always interested me about him. Every time you got a new Bowie album there seemed to be a reading list with it – a crazy reading list with loads of nutty stuff, but it did send you off to read. He was a voracious reader. I know when he moved into a house in Switzerland he took about 1,500 books but they were only there for six weeks or something like that. I can’t remember the exact figures but he took crazy amounts of books around with him. When he and Iggy [Pop] went on the TransSiberian Express they took two tea chests full of books and they sat on the Trans-Siberian railway and just read their way across Siberia. As a big advocate of reading for pleasure to enhance creativity, do you consider David Bowie to be the perfect advert for it given the successful career he had? Absolutely. I go to schools a lot and they always talk about reading if you want to be a writer but you should read a lot if you want to be an engineer, you should read a lot if you want to be a musician, and you should read a lot if you want to be a cook because reading is where you get to meet people who you’re never going to meet in the flesh.

“YOU S H O U L D READ A L OT IF YO U WANT TO BE A WRITER , AN ENG INEER , A MUS IC IAN O R A C O O K BECAU S E READING IS W HERE YO U G ET TO M EET PEO P L E WH O YO U ’ R E NE VER G O ING TO M EET IN TH E FL ES H . ”

If you were to put a definitive reading list together of the books and authors that have been most influential for you, what would that include? It would definitely feature a book by a woman called Ursula Le Guin, named ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’. It’s an amazing fantasy book which I read at just the right age and it’s about a school for wizards, funnily enough. It made knowledge sexy so it kind of turned me into a swot. One of your other projects at the moment is a film called ‘Triple Word Score’, which seems to have Liverpool talent at the heart of it. How is it coming together? Yes we’re shooting that next spring. It’s funny because it’s basically the film that The Farm made – one of the producers is Roy Boulter who was the drummer, and the director is Carl Hunter who was the guitarist. Also Bill Nighy is in it and he used to be at the Everyman. It’s based on a short story I wrote years ago and it’s about Scrabble. Do you enjoy the process of your writing being turned into something completely different by someone else? Oh yes that’s brilliant, it’s wonderful. I am really interested [in other people’s interpretations] and I think that comes from having a background in film where you write a line which you think is funny one way, and then the actor does it and it’s completely different. I’m very used to the fact that other people make you look better! Having written for the screen, for books and for more theatrical projects like the Olympic opening ceremony, which is your favourite? I love, love, love writing children’s books and I love going to schools and reading. I defy anyone not to love being on a film set, but the children’s books seem important. I owe so much to the books that I read [as a child]. I write for an age group of around eight to 12 and the books I read at that age made me, so there’s an element of paying back a debt there really. Liverpool has a ‘City of Readers’ campaign underway to transform it into the UK’s foremost reading city. How important do you feel such initiatives are in encouraging people to read? It’s like some kind of weird dirty secret but when you meet people who do really well at things they’re nearly always really big readers, whatever the field is. It’s not talked about and it seems strange to me because parents want the best for their children and they’ll stand over them while they do their homework or they’ll provide them with extra tutors or send them to private school, but nothing works like reading with them. It is a magic bullet for social mobility and for happiness.

You’ve written original stories but also taken on characters and concepts which already exist, such as your ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ sequel book and screenwriting episodes of ‘Doctor Who’. Is the bigger challenge creating something from scratch, or adding an original touch to something people already love? Making something from scratch is definitely harder because if you know there’s a car that can fly then you know something in the story will work! To tell a story that’s never been told before is an amazing thing though because stories live for a long time, they can live forever. The country has recently been celebrating a successful Olympic Games – the first since you worked on the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony with Danny Boyle. Do you still see a legacy of that show given that it instilled so much pride in the nation? I think that nation is still there, it still exists. It doesn’t speak as loudly as it did that summer. Also, that ceremony and the torch relay were both done by volunteers. The people who are doing those types of things are the people who don’t get into the papers, really good people who do amazing things. I think what was really good about the opening ceremony was that it put them in the spotlight for once and those people are still there doing great stuff. Do you still have a dream project you’d like to work on or a goal you’d like to achieve? I would really, really love to do a big animated movie. I worked for a while on a Pixar film that didn’t come off but I would love to do it. ‘Finding Nemo’ and films like that are so amazing and it would just be great to do something like that. I am working on an animated film but it’s not of that scale.

& Best for...

CHICKEN WINGS There are few tasty foods more appropriate for sharing than chicken wings, and luckily Liverpool serves up top quality variations by the bucketload! If you’re searching for that finger lickin’ good old American favourite when dining out with friends, look no further than our pick of the best.

A MEATYLICIOUS MEAL Koop, Bold Street & Aigburth Vale

CHICHA Bold Street, L1

Whether ordering original or boneless, there is a wide range of spices to complement each serving of wings at Koop. The restaurant prides itself on its chicken which has been marinated in its patented secret sauce for 24 hours. There’s good news for South Liverpool wing lovers too, as Koop recently opened a new branch in Aigburth which also offers home delivery.

DEEP SOUTH SHARING Red’s True Barbecue, Hanover Street

Against the raw backdrop of a car mechanicthemed interior, this urban restaurant is a genuine smokehouse with a unique take on America’s Deep South. Red’s takes you stateside instantly with its little plates and barbecue trays of chicken wings to share.

THE CHICKEN CHALLENGE Pattersons, Gradwell Street Offering a spectacular selection of wings, fried in buttermilk and dusted with a secret flour recipe, it’s easy to see why Pattersons is one of the city’s hottest chicken eateries. Why not try the unbearable ‘Hot Wing Challenge’? Finish 20 buffalo wings marinated in super hot sauce within the five-minute time limit and the restaurant foots the bill.

Liverpudlians can be forgiven for never having sampled Peruvian food before a visit to Chicha. Bold Street’s new addition is the first restaurant in the city dedicated to the land of the Incas and one of only a handful in the country outside of London. We need more of them on these shores if my dining experience is anything to go by. I was immediately taken in by the eatery’s positive vibes - the result of warm lighting, mellow music and vibrant, graffiti-themed artwork. Chicha scores highly in the bohemian cool stakes, but what about the food? I’d be ready to answer that question after sampling the authentic Peruvian cocktails its capable bar staff whip up. I started with a Strawberry Chilcano - a refreshing blend of strawberry puree, lime juice and ginger ale, nicely spiced by a dash of Peruvian rum derivative picso - while my dining partner opted for a Manzana Smash (both £7.50). My date’s drink was a traditional blend of lime juice, fresh apple, apple soda and sugar syrup - surely that combo counts towards your five a day - which delivered its titular smash thanks to the inclusion of Agwa de Bolivia; a sweet and tangy liquor that brings a party to your pallet.

REVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW With taste buds primed and stomachs lined with a perhaps overly generous serving of complimentary dipping bread, we dived straight into the mains. At Chicha they consist of tapasstyle dishes with a South American twist. Upon the recommendation of our friendly waitress, who proved a reliable source during the cocktail course, we each chose three dishes to sample. Both of us plumped for the Chicken Liver and Pisco Pate (£4) and the Aji Chilli Barbecue Ribs (£6). To complete my main course, I selected the Peruvian Potato and Mackerel Fishcakes (£4.50) and my date chose the Spiced Slow Braised Pork Belly (£5.50). Sweet meets savoury is a running theme at Chicha and its kitchen staff are truly masters of blending these two opposing forces. For instance, the chicken liver pate packed a welcome tang thanks to the inclusion of grapefruit marmalade and went down a treat on the freshly baked ciabatta. Moreover, even the most avid rib enthusiast would struggle to find fault in the plate of barbecue-coated

goodness we were served. The succulent meat melted off the bone and the yellow chilli salsa was offset against a lacing of lime, making the dish another successful sweet-savoury combo. The Braised Pork Belly let the side down somewhat, with a fat-to-prime-cut ratio which swung in blubber’s favour - but the fishcakes were another hit, pleasantly crispy on the outside and brought to life by a side helping of zesty balsamic beets. Three of Chicha’s plateloads turned out to be more than enough for our stomachs but, in the name of duty, we shared a Venezuelan Chocolate Brownie (£5.50) for afters. It was rich and indulgent, but the brownie itself was upstaged by the sumptuous scoop of banana ice cream on the side. My date and I agreed that we could have easily devoured it by the bucketload. Chicha is another welcome addition to Bold Street’s burgeoning restaurant offering, bringing a dash of South American colour to the food quarter and flavours which will delight fans of the sweetsavoury combo.
