NEWS AFFORDABLE HOUSING BOOST LINED UP FOR
More than 50 new affordable Merseyside homes will be delivered by Riverside Home Ownership (RHO) in 2017 as the developer gets two projects underway.
School House Mews will extend the community created by RHO’s first phase of Lee Valley development
The housing provider will bring 16 new homes as part of its ongoing regeneration of Belle Vale’s Lee Valley area. Four two-bedroom properties and 12 three-bedroom houses will form the School House Mews second phase development, creating a wider community around the initial 140 purpose-built supported living properties for older people. Meanwhile RHO’s Clock Tower Drive scheme in Walton will bring 37 two and three-bedroom modern family houses to North Liverpool. Jennifer Bailey, sales and new business negotiator at RHO, says: “We are delighted to be delivering such a fresh and exciting range of new homes to the Liverpool market for 2017. “With each site we develop, we strive not only to build new homes but also new communities, and these two sites embody that vision. Both School House Mews and Clock Tower Drive are ideal homes for growing families and young professionals and we can’t wait to unveil the homes to potential buyers this spring.” The application process is currently open for both developments, with the homes due for completion in spring 2017.
Paul Crowley & Co solicitor gives school pupils insight into legal profession Students at Liverpool’s St Margaret’s Academy were given an insight into career options available to them in the legal sector as a solicitor and former pupil paid a visit. Derek Dawson from the city’s Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, which includes commercial property and conveyancing services amongst its specialisms, spoke to Year 10-12 pupils as part of the school’s new ‘work inspiration programme’. Through the initiative the Aigburth school delivers weekly careers talks from selected industry professionals to give students key information on various vocational options. Students were keen to hear about routes into the legal profession, how long it takes to become a qualified solicitor, different specialisms within the

law and potential earnings. Representatives from the University of Liverpool Law School were also in attendance to answer questions. Following the event Derek says: “It was a pleasure to return to St Margaret’s to speak to pupils about my experiences in the law and answer their questions. The students were incredibly engaged in the discussion and helped to direct an informative and dynamic session. “Trying to decide on a future career path is incredibly hard and requires a lot of careful consideration. Asking the right questions and seeking guidance is an essential part of this process. “Fostering local talent is incredibly important, and as a firm we are always on the look out to help and guide future lawyers across Merseyside.”

NEWS NEW BATCH OF HOMES RELEASED AT PARKLANDS Oak style homes are among those being built in the new Parklands plots
Just two properties remain unsold in a newly released range of homes at Parklands in Norris Green. The additional houses were brought to the market after developer New City Vision opened up a new part of the estate. Construction work has been completed on three properties on Elderflower Drive and Vanilla Close, with a further five due to be finished during January. Louise Craven, sales manager at Parklands, says: “We are delighted that this part of Parklands is opening up as our
Paul Bibby with Phil Mayall of landlord Muse Developments
customers can get a feel of the site and can drive around and see the homes that are finished.” Maple, Willow and Oak style houses occupy the newly opened section of the site, with all but two being taken by early buyers. The Willow in particular - a threebedroom house with various fixtures and fittings included - is said to have been a bestseller in recent months, with more of the model being added to fulfil demand. For more information about the Parklands scheme visit www.parklandsliving.co.uk.
WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE TENANCY BREAKDOWNS Initiatives promoting tenancy sustainment in the Liverpool City Region were highlighted during a recent workshop.
City law firm relocates central office
Local Solutions and Just Housing joined forces to host the well-attended event as the number of tenancy breakdowns is said to be on the rise. The session, which took place at Liverpool’s Oakmere Conference Centre, featured a range of housing industry speakers as it shed light on potential solutions including online tenancy skills courses to reduce breakdowns amongst vulnerable groups, and an intensive intervention programme to support tenants under the age of 30 experiencing tenancy difficulties. Behavioural insight which could be used to achieve change among social housing customers, a Big Lottery-funded pilot project called Homeshare enabling young people to secure affordable accommodation and older people to remain in their own homes, and the potential to apply for social impact bonds to help tenancy sustainment were also discussed. The event allowed staff from housing associations, local authorities and community organisations to discuss issues together, as the roll-out of Universal Credit which sees rent allowances being paid directly to tenants is expected to prompt an increase in the issue.
Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors has relocated its city centre headquarters to St Paul’s Square in the heart of the commercial district. MSB, which also has offices in Allerton and Wavertree, has moved from Silkhouse Court to No 4 St Paul’s Square. The move comes after a successful 2016 for the firm which saw staff numbers rise by more than 10%. The practice, which has signed a 10-year lease at St Paul’s Square with landlord Muse Developments, now employs 100 people across its three sites and has announced that five new partners will be appointed in March. Paul Bibby, managing partner at MSB, says: “Silkhouse Court has been a fantastic home for us over the past six years and has allowed us the space to grow, put plans into practice and achieve some of our objectives as a firm. “However, when the building was sold to residential developers in June it prompted a move that was probably overdue. “We really feel that this is the ideal address for us, putting us amongst a number of our peers and partners and with all of the facilities we need to continue to develop and offer an exceptional service to our clients.

NEWS WORK COMPLETE AT HALEWOOD RENTAL SCHEME Housebuilder Countryside has completed construction of 50 new rental homes at the site of the former Mackets Primary School playing fields in Halewood. Working in partnership with Knowsley Council and Sigma Capital Group, the Woodbine Road development is the first of five schemes to complete in the borough. The majority of tenants have moved in at the development which launched in March last year as part of a wider initiative to bring 538 new houses to Knowsley. Philip Whitehead, Countryside’s regional regeneration director, says: “The rejuvenation of the playing fields has played a crucial role in the council’s plans to bring a variety of new housing opportunities into Knowsley. “This scheme is fast becoming a real asset to the area as high quality, affordable rental homes are highly sought-after by young professionals and growing families throughout the borough.” The Woodbine Road development is a collection of two and three-bedroom homes which all boast modern integrated kitchens, open plan living areas and spacious family bathrooms.

M LUXURY APARTMENT SCHEME LINED UP FOR ICONIC DEPARTMENT STORE One and two-bedroom luxury apartments are being lined up to breathe new life into an iconic Liverpool City Region department store building. Luxor Group has purchased the former home of independent retailer Tyrers in St Helens and is planning to invest more than £1 million into the site. The mixed-use transformation of the 15,000 sq ft Bridge Street unit, which will also incorporate a new basement and ground floor retail offer, will add to the firm’s growing property portfolio as it continues to seek new opportunities in and around Merseyside. Luxor Group has already successfully
invested in the Kensington area of Liverpool and is the landlord of more than 155 rental units in total. Paul Nicholson, managing director of Luxor Group, says: “We are proud to have an opportunity to save such an iconic building with so much heritage. Tyrers was an institution to the people of Merseyside and we are excited to bring the building back to life by creating functional living space and attracting a grade A tenant for the retail space.” He adds: “We are committed for the long term and will be investing over £1m in the transformation of the Tyrers building. We are confident the conversion will benefit St Helens and its residents.”
LOCAL AUCTION HOUSE ENDS 2016 ON A HIGH Sutton Kersh ended its most successful year to date with an auction of more than 140 properties. There was a large turnout for the final event of 2016 - which raised over £1.6 million prior to the sale and more than £5m in total. As expected, a five-bedroom property in Kensington, and a three-storey house in Gateacre achieved sales exceeding their respective £150,000 and £200,000 guide prices. A three-storey property converted into three self-contained apartments also compounded expectations as it sold for £156,000, which equates to 56% more than the original guide price. Cathy Holt, associate director at Sutton Kersh, says: “December’s auction was one of the biggest of the year with investment properties both in Merseyside and further afield. “It has been an exceptional year at auction despite the Brexit vote and the introduction of
Luxor Group’s managing director, Phil Nicholson outside the former Tyrers store
stamp duty on second properties. “It’s great to end a successful 2016 on a real high.” Sutton Kersh’s first auction of the new year will be held on 9 February at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza. For more information call 0151 207 6315.

WORDS BY MARK LANGSHAW
CHANGE STARTS AT
HOME
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD
THE DAWNING OF A NEW YEAR IS THE PERFECT EXCUSE FOR A FRESH START A TIME FOR SELFIMPROVEMENT AND A CHANCE TO STEER YOURSELF ONTO THE PATH TO A MORE PRODUCTIVE FUTURE CHANGE STARTS AT HOME AND THESE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD ARE AMONG THE SIMPLEST WAYS TO SAVE MONEY LIVE GREENER AND BECOME MORE STORAGE SAVVY IN
LEANER AND GREENER Reducing the carbon footprint isn’t just for smug eco warrior sorts - householders stand to make substantial savings by living a little greener. Government figures suggest air sealing an old or particularly drafty house could help residents reduce heating and cooling bills by up to 20%. You’ve probably heard similar figures cited before but may not realise how little time and effort it takes to up your insulation game. In many cases a roll of weatherstripping will suffice to patch up doors, windows and other movable building components. This will set you back little more than £5, which will be recouped in no time through the monetary benefits of a draft-free home. Sourcing extra insulation is a good start but it isn’t the only new year’s resolution to consider if a more eco friendly home is on your list of goals for 2017. Turning off the lights when leaving a room and replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED alternatives is another straightforward, yet cost-effective solution to carbon footprint reduction. Finally, be mindful of your thermostat’s setting and make sure it isn’t on too high or too low. Installing a programmable model to turn off the heating when you’re not home is also a must. And whilst learning how to programme your central heating might seem like hard work, as new year’s resolutions go it’s easier and less expensive than fulfilling your gym vows. 30 Your Move

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
RAISING THE DOUGH
TOP BILLING TIPS The average household spends £3,329 yearly on council tax, utility and phone bills, but with a few painless lifestyle changes you can undercut that figure. Although switching water supplier isn’t an option, there’s no need to go with the flow if you feel you’re paying too much - consider having a free water meter installed. Taking showers instead of baths and swapping to a more efficient showerhead will also help you reduce the amount of water you’re wasting and make long-term savings. Figures from Ofgem suggest households could save around £200 per year by switching energy tariff, so make a new year’s resolution to regularly shop around and keep tabs on the latest deals from other suppliers. We’ve already touched on thermostats, but it’s worth pointing out that turning yours down by just 1°C could cut your heating bill by up to 10% in the long run. In addition, the telecoms industry is highly competitive and operators are often willing to negotiate if you tell them you’ve found cheaper tariffs elsewhere. Contact your service provider and request a different deal if you feel you’re shelling out too much on phone and internet bills. At the very least they’ll conduct a short review to ensure you’re on the tariff which best suits your lifestyle. Council tax is unavoidable in most cases, but up to 400,000 homes in the UK have been assigned the wrong tax band. Contact your local authority if you feel you’re being overcharged - a banding challenge takes no more than 10 minutes and a significant rebate could be yours by the end of it.
Research suggests four out of five Britons would rather own a home than rent, and if you’re among them, why not take those first steps towards the property ladder in 2017? You don’t need a diploma in finance and mortgage broking to realise that buying a house requires serious capital. For many of us that isn’t easy to come by, but shrewd saving habits are a good start. The first step is establishing how much you’ll need to save so there’s a defined target to aim for. Carry out thorough research into the areas you could realistically afford to live in and the types of properties within your budget. Next, establish when you’re looking to buy and use this timeframe to calculate how much to squirrel away each month. Having clear numbers to work with creates a solid foundation to build on and sets a realistic goal to stick to through the year. The old ‘no time like the present’ adage certainly applies here as you should begin saving as soon as possible. Once you’ve made this commitment, you’ll need a place to stash those savings. If you don’t have an online bank account with a separate pot for your deposit in progress, open a savings account - a service which ties up your funds but offers a superior interest rate may be preferable to an instant access account as it may be some years before you’re in a position to buy. Set up a regular payment to enter your savings each month by direct debit or standing order, rather than transferring funds across sporadically, and be sure to review your savings at least once a year to make sure you’re getting the best rate of interest. Consult price comparison websites to find out which service providers are offering the top rates. If yours is falling short, jump ship to another - superior interest could shave precious time off your arduous journey towards home ownership.
COMBAT THE CLUTTER No doubt tackling the mountains of clutter your home has been accumulating over the years is high on the 2017 to-do list - and this doesn’t necessarily have to be a daunting task. There are a number of creative strategies you can adopt to make the process as stress free as possible. Why not start by drawing up a list of the charity shops in your area? They’ll gladly take those unwanted clothes, entertainment products and other space-hogging goods off your hands. Breaking your decluttering mission down into bite-sized tasks is the key. Some have found success giving away or discarding one unwanted item a day - that way there will be 365 less things competing for space in your home by the end of the year. Others take the 12-12-12 challenge, which involves identifying 12 items to bin, 12 items to donate and 12 items to be returned to the place they’re usually stored. Successfully decluttering is only half the battle, as returning to your hoarding ways will only see you end up with the same congestion woes come the end of 2017. This is why it’s important to be more storage savvy going forward, and solutions to your space conundrums can be found lying dormant around the house or at the bottom of the recycle bin - these handy life hacks will help you discover them. Most households will have a mess of carrier bags stashed away haphazardly, an ever-growing ball of plastic that lowers the tone of the cupboard under the sink. Reclaim that space by stuffing those carrier bags in empty tissue boxes, the design of which allows you to extract them one at a time when the need arises. Is the back of your television looking like a spider’s web of tangled cables? Velcro tape is a quick, easy and cost-effective way to keep those unruly chords in check. Onto the bedroom, and every inch of free space counts when the inside of your wardrobe is a scene of thread-based chaos - you can free up more by adding shower curtain hooks to the equation. It may sound unorthodox, but clipping these fixtures onto hangers or directly to the clothes rail will solve that age old problem of how to tidily store items like hats, scarves and handbags. INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW
WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC STEM FROM? There was a really enthusiastic head teacher at my primary school, St Margaret’s in Anfield, and he taught us all the recorder so we could play in assembly. The year after that I was offered free music lessons through the council’s Liverpool Music Support Service and was given the choice between clarinet and flute. I took to the clarinet simply because I could make a noise out of it. After that I went to King David High School which had a really good music department. I also travelled to Manchester to attend the Royal Northern College of Music at the weekends and was in the council’s Saturday morning music school and Merseyside Youth Orchestra, which is now the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. There was a brilliant infrastructure in place in Liverpool when I was a youngster for me to feed off and that was accompanied by the opportunity to watch concerts at the Philharmonic Hall. From the word go there was a lot of great music and teaching going on in the city. HOW HAS LIVERPOOL’S HERITAGE AS A MUSICAL CITY HELPED YOU IN YOUR CAREER? Liverpool is one of the greatest musical cities in Europe. From a classical point of view, the heritage of its orchestra goes back hundreds of years and you have some of the most significant musical figures coming to the city to perform, conduct and write. The orchestra is the jewel in the crown of the Liverpool music scene and it’s always been proactive when it comes to nurturing young talent. It also has its contemporary music ensemble, Ensemble 10/10, and that for me was incredibly significant while growing up because it exposed me to music I would otherwise have never known existed. YOU PERFORMED AT THE INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED WIGMORE HALL IN LONDON AT THE AGE OF WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES OF THAT SHOW? The gig at Wigmore Hall came fresh off the back of the Young Musician of the Year award so I was still in the mindset of playing relatively high profile concerts but it did feel like a big deal at the time. There was a lot of preparation involved and a new piece was commissioned for it. It was frightening in a sense but I enjoy those high pressure gigs. WHAT EFFECT DID YOUR DOUBLE AWARD SUCCESS IN HAVE ON YOUR CAREER? That kind of formal recognition definitely opened doors for me. I don’t think I would have had the career I’ve had without that, but you have to manage things carefully after something like that; play the gigs you want to do and remain true to yourself. At the same time, it’s difficult to
say no to things. It’s been a brilliant door-opening experience in many ways, but on the other hand there are times when I’ve found it difficult to balance the writing and the playing side of things. SO YOU HAVE TO MAKE COMPROMISES BETWEEN PERFORMING AND COMPOSING? It’s incredibly difficult to balance the two. I always try to leave space between playing projects and writing projects. I’ve never felt like it’s a compromise as such, but there are times when I’ve had to cancel the odd clarinet concert that’s appeared in my diary to give me room to write. Projects vary in size, scope and scale and my schedule is always in flux. Sometimes it works to balance playing and writing and other times it doesn’t. That’s kind of the nature of the beast. HOW DOES PLAYING SOMEBODY ELSE’S MUSIC COMPARE TO HEARING YOUR OWN COMPOSITIONS BEING PERFORMED? Whenever I go to hear a piece of my own music there are always nerves mixed in with the excitement. Hearing something you created and spent a lot of time working on for the first time is always a bit strange, but I don’t feel that way when I’m performing other people’s music because there’s a sense of being more in control of what you’re doing. I love having the opportunity to play new music. HOW IS YOUR ROLE AS COMPOSER IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE BBC PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA GOING? It’s an incredibly rewarding experience being able to write music for an orchestra over several years, building up a rapport with the musicians, getting to know their strengths and writing to that capacity. From my point of view it’s amazing because I now have a certain amount of work ahead of me, three years’ worth of orchestra music that I get to write. It’s a very varied role. At the moment I’m in playing mode and have recently performed in Scotland, London, Manchester and Oxford. It’s been hectic, giving me little time to sit down and write, but I have between now and February free to sit at the piano and compose. The pieces tend to shift and shape depending on how much time I have to work on a project. ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY NEW COMPOSITIONS FOR THE ORCHESTRA AT THE MOMENT? I’m writing a cello concerto at the moment and have a piano trio lined up after that. I like to think there’s a real emotional depth to the music I write as I try to write multi-layered orchestral textures which use the orchestra in a way that audiences might not necessarily have heard before. There’s always a strong narrative structure in my work, a sense of being taken on a journey or uplifted to another realm and that will be reflected in my next piece.

JANUARY FUN IN LIVERPOOL
JANUARY… MONEY’S TIGHT YOU’RE UP TO THE LAST NOTCH ON YOUR BELT AND STILL PICKING PINE NEEDLES OUT OF THE LIVING ROOM CARPET IT’S GREAT! AFTER THE INDULGENCE OF THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD FOR MANY OF US THE NEW YEAR IS A TIME TO TIGHTEN THOSE PURSE STRINGS AND HIBERNATE UNTIL PAY DAY BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY HERE IN LIVERPOOL THERE’S PLENTY OF CHEAP CHEERFUL AND CRUCIALLY BOOZE-FREE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES TO HELP YOU EASE INTO AND YOUR MOVE HAS PICKED THE BEST IN OUR HANDY GUIDE
LAUGH IT OFF Designed for anyone who wants to have a laugh and feel good, Laughter Yoga is based on the idea that artificial laughter offers the same physiological and psychological benefits as the spontaneous kind. Every Friday evening, yoga instructor Jordan Fawcett leads an hour-long class at HUS on Tithebarn Street. After some basic breathing exercises followed by child-like playtime activities to get you in the mood, you’ll soon be roaring away as the merriment becomes infectious. Hopefully you’ll notice a boost in your mood as well as a better nights’ sleep and you’ll also be working out your abdominal and core muscles which surely beats sit-ups on a smelly gym mat any day of the week.
EXPAND YOUR MIND After a fortnight spent contemplating nothing more taxing than which TV repeat to watch next, why not give your grey matter a much needed feed with a trip to the Walker Art Gallery. Running from 27 January to 7 May 2017, the venue’s free Victorian Treasures exhibition brings together more than 60 period paintings from the collections of National Museums Liverpool, exploring the work of leading 19th Century classical artists such as Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Edward John Poynter. The exhibition, recently seen by more than 150,000 visitors during a tour of Japanese cities, will also feature pieces from a number of iconic Pre-Raphaelite artists including John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. Meanwhile over at Bluecoat, the first in a series of year-long heritage exhibitions to mark the arts centre’s 300th birthday gets underway on 28 January. Art at the Heart of Bluecoat runs till 9 April and examines the central role art has played at the city centre’s oldest building through some of its key personalities, exhibitions and organisations. Entry is free.
ALCOHOL-FREE FUN The rise in popularity of escape games in the UK over the past couple of years has been remarkable and here in Liverpool the situation is no different with a handful dotted about the city. With each one essentially based on the same premise whereby you and a team of friends are locked in room and given a series of clues to help you solve puzzles and hopefully escape, strong production values and well thought-out storylines are a must. Tick Tock Unlock scores highly in both of these categories with its ‘Blueprint’ game where it's your job to uncover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of a renowned history professor and conspiracy theorist. Located at Chadwick Court, near Costco, it’s recommended for anyone aged over nine years old and is a great way to make the most of any remaining time off with the family this January. Not quite ready to dive back into real life after the Christmas break? Maybe a virtual reality experience is more up your street. VR-HERE on Paul Street offers visitors the chance to experience the full power of virtual reality entertainment using the latest technology and most upto-date games. Not just for ardent gamers, during your 30 minute slot you have the option of various immersive experiences such as becoming a gourmet chef or an office worker with the ‘Job Simulator’ or taking a closer look at the human anatomy with ‘Body Scan’ and revealing every layer of tissue in all its gruesome glory.
GUILT-FREE GRUB As we ease into the new year, many of us will no doubt be looking to lose some unwanted holiday heft but this shouldn't mean resorting to celery sticks and brown rice. We’ve found the perfect culinary compromise so you can enjoy some tasty grub without having to worry about your waistline and it comes in the shape of authentic vegetarian and vegan Indian eatery Sanskruti. Tucked away in Liverpool’s commercial district on Bixteth Street, Sanskruti was recently named on The Sunday Times’ list of the top 30 places serving the best veggie food in the country. With recipes drawn from across the Indian subcontinent including a number of street food options and a popular Indian dessert made from freshly curdled milk balls, this is one unique restaurant worth seeking out in January.
GIVE SOMETHING BACK Volunteering this January is an easy way to stay busy whilst hopefully making a real difference to people’s lives. With opportunities available across a wide range of areas, volunteering can help you develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. The Silver Line is one organisation which is always on the lookout for caring people who can spare 30 minutes a week for a friendly chat with older members of the public. Having nobody to talk to on a regular basis can be particularly upsetting for some people especially those who are used to sharing their home and time with others. If you’d prefer to get a little more active, a new scout group is opening in Toxteth this month and is calling on volunteers to get involved. Based in the Southern Neighbourhood Council (SNC) building on Upper Mann Street, the group has appointed a leader but is still in need of section assistants who are committed and enjoy working with young people. For more information on these opportunities and others across the city, contact Volunteer Centre Liverpool on 0151 237 3975. Your Move 43

& Best for...
FOOD TRENDS A new year brings new delicious treats. 2017 is set to be exciting for foodies and here in Liverpool the options are unusual and diverse. We’ve picked out the top three places to sample the best up-and-coming trends, from superfoods to slightly indulgent additions.
SUPER SEAWEED Etsu, The Strand With the tide turning, the buzzword in the health industry in 2017 is ‘seaweed’ due to the calcium-packed superfood’s nutritional value and versatility. Customers can enjoy this delicacy at Etsu, which specialises in authentic Japanese cuisine, with its Kaiso Salad featuring a mix of green, red and white seaweed.
MAGICAL MUSSELS Trattoria 51, Old Hall Street Sustainable shellfish is set to reinvigorate menus in 2017. Mussels are a popular dish which can be served as a side or a main, and such shellfish has recently been considered among the best foods to improve brain function. Trattoria 51 serves fresh mussels with wine, garlic, cherry tomatoes and parsley.
COCONUT CONCOCTION The Brink, Parr Street Coconut milk is expected to rise to prominence in 2017. Highly nutritious and linked with improved cholesterol levels and heart health. The city’s first dry bar will ease you into the new flavour as it mixes up a refreshing Tropical Mist, which consists of banana, vanilla ice cream and coconut milk blended with milk and ice.
CASTLE STREET TOWNHOUSE
Castle Street, L2
Castle Street Townhouse has all the makings of an early 19th Century members-only club with its dark green walls and leather upholstery; a perfect fit for the commercial district. However the restaurant is not without its modern quirks, with free cocktails offered to those who post about their visit on social media and, of course, a menu based entirely around ‘brunch’. I must admit that, although a huge lover of breakfast foods, the concept of an all-day brunch initially did not appeal to me. However, a glance at the menu quickly changed any preconceptions. The menu blends popular brunch components to create dishes that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Both small and large plates are on offer with the option of combining the two to create a starter and main course. My dinner date and I decided to forego a starter and instead shared a side of olives (£3) as we considered our options. With a quick look at the cocktail menu I ordered the
REVIEW BY LYDIA CONNOLLY ‘Free as a Bird’ (£8.50) - a refreshing blend of Hendrick’s Gin, St Germain, fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup, elderflower cordial and cucumber. My date also made a great cocktail choice with the ‘Hit the Road’ (£8.50) a rich combination of Havana 3, Disaronno Amaretto, ginger syrup, fresh lemon juice and egg white. For my main, I finally settled on the hake fillet with spinach hash, avocado chilli and chorizo (£13) after much encouragement from our waiter who assured me this was his favourite dish. It proved a good decision - this was one of the best dishes I have tried in a long time. The presentation was a delight to the eye and the serving was much bigger than expected. The hake was cooked and flavoured to perfection with the avocado chilli providing a welcome kick. The spinach hash was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and what I can only describe as a vegetarian take on a fishcake.
My dining partner was also impressed by his choice of pan-fried salmon and beetroot hummus with spiced lentil dahl and cauliflower (£15). We shared sides of seasonal veg (£3) and spinach (£3), both of which were seasoned well and gave our meal some added greenery. While my date decided to pass on dessert I couldn’t resist the sticky date pudding (£5.50). This was Castle Street Townhouse’s version of a sticky toffee pudding using dates, banana, toffee and honeycomb served with ice cream. It was a perfect end to a perfect meal with the twist on the classic British pudding truly paying off. I will definitely be returning to Castle Street Townhouse to make the most of the extensive cocktail menu and, of course, its delicious food offering. The eatery will no doubt stand out from the crowd as the commercial district’s restaurant boom continues.
