EDITOR’S LETTER/// Liverpool has long been a haven of hidden gems and unique attractions, with its food and drink offering drawing particular interest at the moment. Aside from a diverse mix of permanent restaurants, a growing selection of ‘blink and you’ll miss them’ pop-up eateries is evidence of the city’s exciting scene for foodie fans and culinary creators alike. In this issue, we find out why such short-term food ventures are proving so popular in Liverpool. And as the city continues to evolve with new developments, our Hot Topic looks at how homes, leisure attractions and workspaces can all thrive alongside each other to create diverse communities. If that’s not enough, we catch up with Liverpool’s own acclaimed director Terence Davies ahead of his new film release. Enjoy!

COOL AND COMPACT APARTMENTS ON THE LIVERPOOL MARKET
- PW Rodney Street, L1 A bold feature wall complements the otherwise neutral décor of this studio student accommodation in a popular central area. A modern refurbishment of the property has made the most of its interior, which includes a fully fitted kitchen with integrated appliances, a wall-mounted LCD television and a built-in wardrobe and desk. The windows of the home are in keeping with the Grade II-listed building which, from the exterior, has all the charm of its Georgian Quarter surroundings.
LIVERPOOL STUDENT LETS /
- PW The Bridewell, Cheapside, L2 This luxury student studio accommodation mixes up to date living with an historic setting as it’s located within Liverpool city centre’s former Bridewell prison. The studio itself incorporates useful features including an LCD TV, WiFi and a workstation complete with shelves and a pinboard. A communal space with exposed brick walls, displaying the building’s original character, offers more room to relax and tenants also benefit from an on-site gym, cycle store and laundry facilities.

Liverpool auction house to be TV ‘star’ Sutton Kersh’s 9 February property auction is set to appear on TV later this year. BBC One’s Homes Under the Hammer came to Liverpool this month to film Sutton Kersh’s 9 February property auction. Sutton Kersh Associate Director Cathy Holt said: “We are delighted that Homes Under the Hammer filmed at one of our auctions. We had a great selection of lots on the day they were shooting and the auction turnout was particularly busy.”
The production team at Homes Under the Hammer said: “It’s been a while since the show came to Merseyside. Liverpool is a city rich in culture with many fantastic buildings and Sutton Kersh provided an exciting auction which will help make a great programme!” Presented by Lucy Alexander, Martin Roberts and Dion Dublin, Homes Under the Hammer is a series which follows buyers from auction to completed renovation.
Sutton Kersh’s next auction will be held on the 29 March at The Crowne Plaza, Liverpool. For more information, visit www.suttonkersh. co.uk/auctions or call 0151 207 6315.
If you are thinking of buying or selling a property at auction, call Merseyside’s Leading Auction Team on 0151 207 6315. Next auction date 29 March catalogue closes 3 March. www.suttonkersh.co.uk

NEWS Headline sponsor announced for this year’s NWPAs
Prestigious property awards will be presented across a range of categories
Housing developer Countryside has been announced as the headline sponsor of this year’s NWPAs. The glittering event will return on 19 October, celebrating a year of success across the North West’s residential and commercial property sectors. Countryside is among a number of businesses who have signed up early to support the 2017 ceremony, taking place at Lutyens Crypt, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Peter Vella, the housebuilder’s regional sales and marketing director, says: “The NWPAs continue to raise the bar on new-build housing by celebrating the positive impact that these homes have on local communities, employment and investment into the region. “Here at Countryside we’re committed to creating places that people love, which is why we’re proud to be sponsoring this year’s awards ceremony and to honour the very best of the region’s property market.” Meanwhile UK Business Supplies, PCS Law, The Foundry Agency and Redwing Living have put their name to award categories and Furnish That Room will sponsor a drinks reception on the night. A number of entries are also said to have been submitted for NWPAs’ prestigious accolades, which include ‘Residential Property Agency of the Year’, ‘Property Apprentice’ and ‘Show Home of the Year’. Kim O’Brien, director of NWPAs organiser Move Publishing, which is also the team behind Your Move, says: “We’re delighted to welcome Countryside on board as the main sponsor of this year’s NWPAs. “In terms of sponsorships and entries we’re already seeing a fantastic level of support for the awards, which continue to be a key event on the property industry’s calendar. “This year is shaping up to be another exciting year for the sector too so we can’t wait to get together and celebrate the success of its brightest stars.” For opportunities at this year’s NWPAs, call Catherine on 0151 709 3871 or visit www.nwpas.com.
HOME BUYERS URGED TO CARRY OUT INDEPENDENT SURVEYS Liverpool homebuyers are being urged to conduct an independent survey before buying a new property. According to Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, too many buyers are relying on their mortgage valuation report rather than instructing a specialist to conduct an independent survey. Mike Carter, head of conveyancing at the city law firm, is urging buyers to beware that mortgage valuation reports are for valuation purposes only and may not identify any defects to the property. He says: “The valuation process is simply a superficial inspection to check on the value of a property and does not offer an in-depth inspection of the building. “I recently saw a mortgage valuation from a high street lender which stipulated it was desktop only, meaning the valuer had not even visited the property. “A prudent buyer should give serious consideration to having their potential home surveyed by an independent surveyor to identify any structural or other defects likely to give rise to problems and expenditure in the future. “If items are identified by your survey report then you will have the opportunity to get any relevant costings, giving you the power to negotiate over the price with the seller.” 24 Your Move

NEWS LANDLORDS URGED TO STAY ON RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW Liverpool letting agent Hunters is urging landlords to keep up to date with the latest letting rules or risk falling foul of the law. The firm says it has seen an increase in the number of property owners struggling to keep up with more than 145 essential regulations including Right to Rent checks and protecting rental income with a warranty. Tracey Swift, office manager at Hunters, says: “As a letting agent we have spent considerable time and effort to make sure we can offer our clients a safe and comprehensive service. “When first letting a property there is a myriad of rules and regulations and with so many to think about it’s unsurprising that certain aspects can be left to one side until another day. “Using a reputable agent is key to security and safety as well as maximising your investment.” For more information call Hunters on 0151 707 7777.

VIRTUAL REALITY ‘CAN BRING BENEFITS FOR HOME BUYERS AND DEVELOPERS’ Interactive technology can enhance property buying and help drive residential sales, according to a marketing specialist for the industry. North West-based Blaze Marketing, which works with property firms and is currently expanding in the Liverpool City Region, suggests digital advancements like virtual reality (VR) can help provide Benazeer Singh says new technology buyers with a clearer vision of can help the residential market their future home. Benazeer Singh, an account manager at the company, says: “These services can greatly enhance the property buying experience for potential purchasers and aid residential developers to drive sales. “Floor plans and CGIs are often not enough to fully provide the purchaser with a realistic idea of how it will look until built but a VR experience allows the buyer to walk through a development to visualise and get a better understanding even before a brick has been laid.” Highlighting the benefits of touring a residential property using a smartphone and a 3D VR headset, Benazeer adds: “The customer is also able to make real time changes to things such as kitchen fixtures, finishes, colours and specifications so can comment on their preferences, which can save time and money for the developer from the start.” For further information visit www.blaze-marketing.co.uk.

NEWS HOUSEBUILDER LOOKS FOR LAND TO SATISFY RISING DEMAND Housebuilder Elan Homes is on the hunt for more land across the Liverpool City Region as it looks to satisfy increased demand for property.
The new partner appointments follow a year of growth for the team
FIVE NEW PARTNERS AT MSB SOLICITORS Five team members have been promoted to partners at Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors following a “year of accelerated recruitment”. Brad Armstrong, Hayley Catherall, Paul Gallagher, Nicola Harris and Emma Palmer will take on the new roles across the company from 1 March, joining nine existing partners. The series of appointments is the latest development for the MSB team, which grew by almost a third during 2016. Paul Bibby, managing partner at MSB Solicitors which includes conveyancing among its specialist areas, says: “It is an exciting time for MSB
and this announcement of our new partners follows a year of accelerated recruitment in the firm in order to meet the demands of new work. “We are now a 14-partner firm and can confidently draw on the experience of people like Paul Gallagher, who has been with us from the beginning of our journey and has had a demonstrable impact on our growth and development over the years; and Brad Armstrong, who only joined the firm in 2015 but has already overseen a record year for his department. “It is clear we have the right mix of skills and expertise now to continue to drive forward and I am incredibly excited for the year ahead.”
The developer, which is behind South Liverpool’s Aigburth Grange scheme, is looking to secure plots from an acre upwards around Merseyside, as well as other North West areas including Cheshire and Manchester. Andrew Morgan, land director for Elan Homes in the North, says: “There’s a real gap between supply and demand and we want to redress that by identifying and acquiring land with development potential. “Location is a major factor for us because our discerning customers expect to live in the best neighbourhoods. “Many local councils are keen to increase their housing stock in line with government targets to build more homes nationwide and we’re keen to work with landowners and local authorities to help them to achieve their goals.” For more information visit www.elan-homes.co.uk. DIVERSE CITY SUCCESS
How can homes, leisure and workspaces thrive alongside each other? Photo: Wikipedia/Lies Thru a Lens
iverpool city centre is unrecognisable from what it was a decade ago. Student housing is a dominant feature, the food and drink offering has increased considerably, nightlife has changed and evolved, and whole areas have been redesigned. Long disused districts and spaces that served one purpose for decades have become multi-use, with the likes of the business district now housing a residential element and the Georgian quarter becoming a mecca for new bars and eateries. In an ideal world all elements would co-exist who wouldn’t want our city centre to have it all? But numerous UK cities have shown that’s often easier said than done. News stories of petitions and protests as cultural venues are closed to make way for new developments or of much loved bars having their licenses revoked as a result of noise complaints from new residential tenants show all too clearly the problems that can occur. As development continues apace in Liverpool, how can the city avoid the pitfalls - and reap the benefits - of having a multipurpose offering? One city that planners and developers here would do well to look to is Amsterdam. The Dutch capital has long been praised as the city that got planning right and as models go it would be a smart one to replicate. “Amsterdam has indeed been quite successful in managing to have it all,” says Dr Willem Boterman, a professor of urban geography and urban studies at the University of Amsterdam. “Much of this is related to very intensive planning (both national and local) while at the same time a relatively modest central state that has not come up with any mega development plans. “The city also owns most of the land, which makes it hard for private developers to ignore other interests. The city is very fine grained and has therefore been accommodating to a plethora of functions.” This plethora of functions is easy to see. The centre of the city, Dam Square, which features a range of tourist attractions sits aside Nieuwmarkt, a historic and quirky area featuring flea markets, food stalls and numerous bars and restaurants. To the east lies the city’s Botanic Gardens and Zoo - not too far from the cultural Museum Quarter where galleries and museums rub shoulders with high end boutiques. The business district, Zuidas, is rapidly developing and bills itself as a great place to “work and live”. In keeping with the city’s ability to have it all, Zuidas is also home to residential developments, leisure facilities and hotels, and plans are in place to build a further 9,000 homes in the area by 2040. In Liverpool the ‘functions’ of the city centre were, for many years, very much defined and separated. The business district was the most obvious example of this. Taking a stroll down Old Hall Street on a Saturday a few years ago you could

Could Amsterdam’s planning model be ideal for Liverpool?
“ Liverpool seems to be losing some of that grain tissue. In Amsterdam they are insistent on keeping as much of the fabric of the city centre. ” hear a pin drop, but this is starting to change. Apartment conversions in former office buildings are bringing a residential element to the commercial district while an ever-growing offering of bars and restaurants on Castle Street ensures the area caters for everyone. The key, it seems, is finding the right balance. In Amsterdam a policy is in place to do just that. “The municipality has a ‘balance in the city’ policy, meaning trying to find a middle ground between tourism, business and residential functions,” says Dr Boterman. “Tourism is now becoming very dominant in some parts of the city.” Dr Robert MacDonald, professor and reader in architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, says a body analysing developers’ plans would be of benefit in Liverpool as it aims to broaden its offering, so as to avoid disputes. Indeed, such a body did once exist. “There used to be an Urban Design Forum in
place which would look at developers’ proposals and pass comment on them that doesn’t exist anymore,” he says. “Many cities in Europe including Amsterdam - still have these.” Dr MacDonald says one thing Amsterdam does well, which isn’t always executed as well here, is maintain the aesthetics and the history of the city centre with new developments. “Liverpool seems to be losing some of that grain tissue,” he says. “Some of the smaller buildings are being replaced with monolithic blocks. In Amsterdam they are insistent on keeping as much of the fabric of the city centre.” For a city to be multi-purpose and offer all things to all people it has to be accessible and this, says Dr MacDonald, is an area in which Liverpool falls down. “Getting from John Lennon Airport to Liverpool city centre isn’t easy,” he says. “You either have to wait for the bus or pay for a taxi. Cities like Amsterdam have a much better system.” Amsterdam’s public transport system includes an extensive network connecting the city’s neighbourhoods by train, tram, metro, bus and ferry. Of course, there is a danger with so much activity focused on the city centre that areas outside of that central zone could get left behind. Do we want to have a city centre that has it all but a wider city that is neglected? “The areas which surround the city centre Anfield, Kensington, Walton, Dingle - they’re being forgotten,” says Dr MacDonald. “These are the areas where most people live and they’re neglected. “If you look at Amsterdam the areas surrounding the centre feature parks and lakes which all make for a healthy area.” With plans underway for a new creative quarter to be developed to the north of the city centre as part of the Ten Streets initiative there are signs, at least, that, while central Liverpool flourishes, those areas outside of it have not fallen off the radar. TALENT IN THE CITY
A LIFETIME OF SHUNNING THE MAINSTREAM MEANS TERENCE DAVIES FACES AN UPHILL FUNDING BATTLE ON MOST OF HIS PROJECTS YET THE LIVERPOOL-BORN FILMMAKER CONTINUES UNDETERRED THE ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR’S LATEST OFFERING ‘A QUIET PASSION’ CHARTING THE LIFE OF AMERICAN POET EMILY DICKINSON WAS YEARS IN THE MAKING BUT IS FINALLY ON COURSE TO HIT UK CINEMAS IN EARLY APRIL YOUR MOVE CAUGHT UP WITH TERENCE TO DISCUSS HIS INSPIRATIONS CASTING CHOICES AND THE ROLE HIS HOME CITY HAS PLAYED IN SHAPING HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER
INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW
What inspired you to make a film about Emily Dickinson’s life? When I was in my teens Granada used to do these 15-minute films on people each Sunday. They did one on her and it was Claire Bloom reading ‘Because I Could Not Stop for Death’. I had never heard of her before but that programme inspired me to run out and buy a little anthology of her work. About eight or 10 years ago I revisited that book and wanted to know more about her, so I read about six biographies and realised Emily’s story was fascinating. She never moved out of her house, just withdrew into the family and wrote these extraordinary poems which were not well known in her lifetime. That really drew me to her because when there are people like Emily who didn’t make it in their own lifetime, I have a great feeling for them because, in her case especially, she should have been much more well known. I think she’s the greatest 19th Century poet because in her day she was so modern, and that’s the reason I wanted to do the film. I love her poetry but her story is absolutely extraordinary - she withdrew from the world yet had such a rich inner life. By all accounts she led a relatively low-key life. Was that challenging to turn into something audiences would engage with? All you can do is write it in a way you feel does justice to the person. You don’t know what an audience will think until they’ve seen it and by then it’s too late unfortunately. If the film makes people go and read Emily’s work that would be wonderful because she is a great, great poet. But at the same time, I realised when I was shooting the film that she was an ordinary person as well. She liked to dance, play the piano and do all kinds of things ordinary people enjoy - she just also happened to be a genius. Cynthia Nixon plays Emily in the film. What is it about her that was a good fit for the part? I met Cynthia many years ago working on one of my films which never came off and I’d never forgotten her. As I was researching Emily Dickinson I realised there was only one photograph of her in existence, taken when she was 17. The film’s producer Sol Papadopoulos is a former stills photographer and
he superimposed Cynthia’s face on the 17-yearold Emily and they looked exactly the same. When I was writing the film I kept seeing Cynthia in my head and knew she was absolutely right for the role. Once the script was finished I contacted her and she confirmed she would do it, but touchingly said ‘you won’t make any money from something I’m starring in’. We did, though mostly thanks to Roy Boulter and Sol at Liverpool production company Hurricane Films. Cynthia asked me whether I wanted her to read for the part but I said no. Sometimes you just know a person is right for a role. She even knew Emily’s work and can actually read poetry wonderfully well - a lot of Americans can’t.
“I love the Liverpool of the past, the place where I was born. It will always have a special place in my heart.”
You’re a critically acclaimed filmmaker so why do you find it so difficult to get a movie made? It’s difficult for several reasons. Firstly, the things I’m interested in are not considered commercial if I was to pitch a film about a woman who writes poetry and then dies to a mainstream producer I would quickly be shown the door. Also, I cast because I think a person is right for the role. I don’t give a damn about whether they are famous or not. You’re always pressured to use big names but if they come on board and can’t deliver it’s always me who gets the blame. I’m not prepared to take that risk. Another reason it’s difficult for me to get films made is because a lot of people don’t like what I do and they’ve told me. I see things visually in a very specific way and that’s not up everybody’s
street. Some people hate it - they think it’s slow, pompous, self-important and all that. I’m not everybody’s cup of tea. I’m very much an acquired taste and unfortunately that makes it difficult to raise money because film is very expensive. It’s getting less so because of the rise of digital but nobody is going to give me vast amounts of money. You can’t live on good reviews. As you’ve already mentioned, you often resist casting big name actors. Is there anybody in the industry you would break that rule for? The problem with big names is that they come onto the scene and the audience immediately thinks ‘oh it’s so and so pretending to be so and so’. Big names have done too many films already and we can’t afford their fees - I don’t think any actor or actress is worth £20 million, I don’t care who they are. You don’t get a performance out of a big name actor. What you get is a series of mannerisms and that’s not interesting to me, which is why I’m very stringent about who I cast. I don’t tell my cast members to act, I tell them to feel it - this is subtler and more difficult to draw out of somebody. How much of an influence has the city of Liverpool had on you creatively? It’s had an enormous effect because obviously it’s where I grew up. The only drawback about the city for me is that it’s no longer the place I once knew. So much has been knocked down since then and that upsets me because many of the buildings I was fond of are gone. When I was growing up in Liverpool, people like me from a large working class family didn’t go into the movies, they just didn’t. It was a very upper class occupation. I ended up getting into directing by accident because I originally wanted to write and act. I love the Liverpool of the past, the place where I was born. It will always have a special place in my heart. I don’t recognise the Liverpool I see when I go home now but perhaps that happens to all people when they grow old. Can you reveal what your next cinematic project is going to be? I’ve already completed a script based on a wonderful American novel called ‘Mother of Sorrows’. I’m trying to raise the money for that and cast it. I’m also writing a film about Siegfried Sassoon who’s one of the great First World War poets - hopefully we’ll have that finished to come out in 2018 to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. IT’S BOOM TIME FOR LIVERPOOL’S RESTAURANT SCENE WITH A STREAM OF HIGH-QUALITY VENUES SPRINGING UP AT A SEEMINGLY UNRELENTING PACE AT THE HEART OF THIS FOODIE FLARE-UP IS THE CITY’S POP-UP OFFERING WHICH HAS PROVIDED US WITH SOME OF OUR MOST MEMORABLE EATERY EXPERIENCES SO WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES THESE SHORTTERM EATERIES SO POPULAR AND WHAT APPETISING ADDITIONS CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT?

hen a man hailed as one of the UK’s most influential chefs chooses Liverpool to open his first pop-up restaurant, you know there must be something happening here. All 170 seats for Gary Usher’s ‘Wreckfish’ temporary eatery in a former 19th Century watchmaker’s workshop on Slater Street were snapped up in just 10 minutes, giving some idea of his pedigree. Gary, the creative force behind acclaimed Heswall eatery Burnt Truffle and Chester’s Sticky Walnut, used to work near the workshop so he was well aware of its charm when a friend mentioned its redevelopment last year. Despite the building’s renovation there is still no running water or electricity on the ground floor, and visitors to the pop-up are being told to expect a ‘rustic’ experience.

When it comes to the bill, diners will be invited to pay what they like, with every penny going towards a crowdfunding campaign’s £200,000 target to get Wreckfish properly up and running. Just 34 lucky diners per sitting will get to sample the new concept over its five-night run. Despite the success of his previous restaurants, Gary insists he was still surprised with the interest Wreckfish has generated. “I couldn't believe it - I was shocked by the support it got,” he says. “I don't think we have a massive support but what we do have is a real loyal following that will always back us up.” A stone’s throw from the soon-to-be opened Wreckfish is one permanent venue with its own pop-up offering in place.
The Merchant, which sprang up in the former home of veggie café MelloMello last year, embraced the phenomenon from the get-go with a purpose-built space for a revolving range of restaurant residencies. Co-owner of the Slater Street venue, Lewis Boardman thinks the rise in popularity of popups is in part down to the increased trendiness of eating out in general. “Food is really cool at the minute and has been for a few years,” he says. “Young people aren't starting record labels or club nights anymore, they are starting food brands and restaurants. “We are about to launch our own food market with local independent traders and have big plans for our next food concept.” The Merchant’s next food focus will replace

FINCA, which has recently spent four months serving its Cuban street food menu to the masses. Previously housed in Botanical Garden during the summer, FINCA comes from the same team behind another of Liverpool’s most popular alternative eating experiences, Secret Diners Club. Set up in 2013 by chefs Michael Harrison and Daniel Heffy, and later joined by marketeer Joe Earnshaw, Secret Diners Club’s guests are treated to fantastic feasts in unexpected locations across Liverpool with the whereabouts and menu kept under wraps until the day of the event. Joe, promoter of Secret Diners Club and FINCA, thinks the rise in popularity of pop-ups can be attributed to a change in diners’ habits. “People are looking for something different,” he says. “It’s gone from going to have food before you go on a night out to food being the main event.” According to Joe, the team is now hoping to secure a permanent spot for FINCA after receiving plenty of positive feedback from the public. “FINCA isn’t going to stay as a pop-up or keep travelling around the city – we’re going to do some stuff on the road this summer then look at getting somewhere permanent. “Pop-ups are a nice way to test a different area of town or try out a new concept. If people are into it then you can go for it and make it permanent.” Another venture which has found a temporary home in the city in recent months is the intriguingly named Xiringuito (pronounced chi-rin-gito). The brainchild of friends Conor Sheehan and Jackson Berg, the travelling eatery drew inspiration from Spanish chiringuitos provincial beach bars which serve tapas and drinks throughout the summer. Moving from Liverpool to London in their teens, Conor and Jackson worked their way up through some top restaurants in the capital before deciding to go out on their own. Instead of jumping straight in with a traditional bricks and mortar venue, the pair came up with the idea for a moveable restaurant. Enlisting the help of award-winning architect Asif Khan, who designed a giant white marquee to house the ‘posh pop-up’ as Conor calls it, Xiringuito opened for business in a disused car park in the shadow of Margate’s Dreamland amusement park last year. After spending the summer just a short hop from the beach in Kent, Xiringuito opted to relocate to another up and coming venue in the shape of Liverpool’s Cains Brewery. “While we’ve been away we’ve noticed a huge difference in the city’s food offering,” says Conor. “The place we’ve got in Liverpool could easily be a permanent restaurant. “We’ve got everything a normal restaurant has but we haven’t had to pay a premium and we’ve got the freedom with it to see different places around the country and test it out. “What we’re trying to do is be a proper restaurant but in a unique setting.” A short walk from Cains Brewery on Greenland Street, Texan-born chef Sean Paul

Redding is back in Liverpool at Constellations fresh from cooking for Kate Moss on her birthday. Following his sold-out Love Lane pop-up in the city last summer, Sean has devised a Middle Eastern-inspired menu for his second Liverpool venture which is an homage to the uncomplicated cooking methods of celebrated chef and author Yotam Ottolenghi. “I’m excited to be in Liverpool with its growing independent restaurant culture,” says Sean. “It's good to see the diversity of eateries and not only in the city centre. The food offering here is exceptional and I’m delighted to have been approached to add to it.” Constellations has confirmed to Your Move that although Sean’s pop-up is for one night only in February, depending on its success it could become a regular event. Elsewhere in the Baltic Triangle, eclectic eatery Maray has also recently joined the pop-up party with a new residency at Camp and Furnace. Maray, which has permanent Liverpool restaurants on Bold Street and Allerton Road, is testing new dishes every Friday evening as part of the Nightgarden event, which brings together food, music and live performances against the backdrop of an indoor forest. One of Liverpool’s most respected chefs believes the influx of pop-ups is a good sign for the city’s blossoming restaurant scene. “The fact that we are seeing a lot of pop-up restaurants in the city, with the possibility of more to come, proves we have an interesting, vibrant and innovative scene that they want to be a part of,” concludes Paul Askew, chair of the Liverpool Restaurant Association and chef patron of The Art School. “I think there’s no better way for new entrants to trial concepts than pop-ups and it adds to the variety of the city’s restaurant scene and that can only be a good thing.” Your Move 57

& NEWS DUKE STREET ADDITION A new café and bar is being lined up to open in Liverpool’s Ropewalks district by the end of April. Subject to planning permission, the vacant Grade II-listed 17 Duke Street will be transformed into the food and drink establishment and an accompanying hotel under the brand Lock & Key Hotels. The eatery, which will be open to the public and hotel guests, plans to serve up “simple breakfasts” such as bagels and porridge before moving onto an afternoon menu including soups and paninis. It also promises quality coffee and “high end” themed cocktails. The hotel is expected to launch in August.
Food markets and activities are lined up
FESTIVAL OF FOOD Foodies are in for a feast of attractions when the inaugural New Brighton Seaside Attraction takes place this year. The new family event will be held from 27-29 May, bringing a selection of street food traders, a gin garden and artisan market, and cookery demos by Wirral chefs and brands. There’ll also be cocktail classes, children’s workshops by Junior Chef ’s Academy and local craft beers when the festival takes over a space in front of Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton Beach and the Marine Lake and Promenade. Live music and other family activities are also being lined up to complete a diverse programme.
TRIO OF NEW TRADERS A trio of new food operators are heading to Liverpool’s St Johns Market in the coming weeks. Italian cuisine, Chinese food and crêpes will be served up by the incoming traders at the city centre shopping destination. Their arrival follows last year’s major refurbishment of the market hall. Liverpool City Council, which now has control of all of the city’s market operations, is also currently seeking additional food traders for the site such as cheese and dairy produce specialists.
PIONEER BAR AND BRASSERIE Crosby, L23 From the iron army camped on its shoreline to the nostalgic charm of its community-run cinema, I didn’t need another excuse to visit Crosby but found one nonetheless at Pioneer Bar and Brasserie. Located a short drive from one of the region’s most popular beaches, this familyrun restaurant blends style and heritage, with the modern decor of its dapper dining room and bar area offset against rustic furnishings which evoke the venue’s history as a laundry house. The eatery exudes class yet remains inclusive thanks to its laidback vibe and relaxed daytime dress code. I felt comfortable in jeans and trainers as our friendly hostess led the way to our table. A quick perusal of the menu and we were taken aback by the range on offer at Pioneer, with dishes from Britain, Europe and further afield making up its lunchtime and small plates offering. We were dumbfounded by the sheer amount of choice before us but our attentive waitress helped out with some solid cocktail recommendations. I started with an After Eight - an indulgent mix of Baileys, Frangelico, Kahlua, peppermint, milk and cream named after the popular after-dinner chocolate while my dining partner opted for the rose petalinfused Lychee Rose Martini (both £6.95).
REVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW
Both drinks proved a hit and convinced us that Pioneer lives up to its billing as a cocktail specialist - mine was essentially an alcoholic mint milkshake, sweet and moorish in equal measure, while my date’s concoction was a refreshing blast of sweet and sour. Basking under the warmth of a ceiling-mounted heater, we next ordered some small plates to share, choosing the Pioneer Nachos (£6.45) and Duck Spring Rolls (£4.50) as a precursor to the main event. Nothing could have prepared us for the stomachpounding portion of nachos that turned up - this was a monstrous mound of layered corn chips with all the trimmings, from salsa and sour cream to scorching jalapeños and guacamole, covered with a generous helping of cheese. It was a dish with hangover-curing potential, rich enough in flavour to invite gluttony. As much as we wanted to dive in face first, a few mouthfuls was enough to tell us our mains would be going to waste unless restraint was exercised. The spring rolls, on the other hand, were light on the stomach and beautifully presented. Infused with spices and served with tangy Chinese dipping sauce, this Asian appetiser was delightfully crispy and
bursting with Eastern promise. Battling the temptation to keep picking at those nachos, we ordered our mains - Smoked Salmon Royale (£8.45) for me and home favourite Fish ‘n’ Chips (£8.95) for my dining partner. My plateload of seafood was accompanied by spinach, samphire and penne pasta, enhanced by a Pernod and cream cheese velouté, and topped with a poached egg. Cooked to perfection and sure to strike a chord with clean living enthusiasts, this protein-rich combo was a hearty superfood feast, all of its ingredients working in harmony with one another. Served with hand-cut chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon, my date’s beer battered cod was every inch the English classic you know and love, the fish soft and crispy in all the right places and the fries pleasingly golden. Pioneer’s kitchen staff proved their versatility by scoring top marks on dishes from England, Italy, China and North America and it was a similar success story on the cocktail front. To Crosby locals it’s a jewel in the town’s crown, but to visitors Pioneer is a hidden gem waiting to be unearthed, ideal for a slap-up meal any time of the day or a cocktail-fuelled evening out.
