EDITOR’S LETTER/// It’s a changing time for house hunters. With home ownership out of reach for many these days, ‘generation rent’ is striving to access the same standards and security afforded to buyers. In the first of a new series of features focusing on the rental sector, we find out what matters most to Liverpool renters, what initiatives are in place to ensure they receive quality homes at an affordable price, and what lies ahead for long-term tenants. Meanwhile, the city’s cultural offering is undergoing a transformation too. From crazy golf to bingo, we take a look at the traditional entertainment being given a trendy new twist to revitalise nights out in Liverpool. And as St Patrick’s Day approaches, we look at how Irish residents have long been helping to shape our city.

S(mmerhill ar , Liver$ool, L1 Warm, subtle tones and vintage-style music manuscript provide the perfect setting for a child to grow up in style. The décor is simple enough for the room to grow with its young resident, with space under the bed for savvy storage leaving a tidy room for a cosy night’s sleep. Set within ‘The Oxford’ design from Redrow’s selection, which will be coming to Summerhill Park, the bedroom is one of four in the family detached home.

£279,950 Goddard Chase, Halewood, L26 There’ll be camping fun all year round in this children’s bedroom, as a wooden tent-shaped bed creates a focal point in the outdoor themed space. Neutral tones, a tree-lined wall and wildlife animals will make your little one feel like they’ve been whisked away to an enchanted forest. One of four bedrooms in the ‘Ribble’ style property, it’s also light and bright like much of the home. Elsewhere skylights and French doors feature in a generous open plan kitchen and dining area for the family.

Bentham Drive, Childwall, L16 Beautifully presented in vibrant purple and pink, this young child’s bedroom makes the most of the space on offer. Smart stacked storage keeps clutter at bay and becomes an eye-catching feature as it incorporates the pretty colour scheme. Meanwhile the lively, stripey carpet enhances the compact space which is complemented by a burst of natural light through the central window. It’s one of three bedrooms in the family home, which has plenty of communal space and front and rear gardens.

NEWS PAUL CROWLEY & CO HITS THE KITCHEN FOR CHARITY
The apprentices are developing their new skills over a two-year period
Paul Crowley with Leon and June and event organiser, Chloe Welsh
Housebuilder boosts job prospects in Knowsley with apprenticeships The construction of more than 500 homes in Knowsley has helped boost the number of young apprentices in the borough. As part of National Apprenticeship Week (6 – 10 March) housebuilder Countryside is celebrating the hard work of its 17 apprentices who, through the firm’s ‘Employment and Skills Plan’, have been benefitting from experience in a range of construction jobs. The programme, held in partnership with Knowsley Council, covers roles including joinery, plumbing, plastering, bricklaying and electrics. Amongst the new recruits is 17-yearold Conor Joyce, who is one of four apprentices training to become an electrician and has worked on a variety of
Countryside’s Liverpool City Region developments. Conor says: “I’m really enjoying learning new skills and gaining valuable experience as an electrician with Countryside. “This has given me the confidence to work on my own independently and once I am qualified I will have a career for life.” Philip Whitehead, regional regeneration director for Countryside, adds: “Conor and the other apprentices have really come a long way in such a short space of time. “They've each demonstrated exemplary behaviour and their level of professionalism is evident - we have very high expectations for them over the next couple of years.”
Liverpool law firm Paul Crowley & Co has raised hundreds of pounds for charity with a special cake baking competition. Local ‘Gogglebox’ stars June and Leon were on hand to judge ‘Crowley’s Cake-Off ’, which was held as part of Dementia UK’s ‘Time for a Cuppa’ campaign. Staff from the firm, which has offices in Anfield and Liverpool city centre, were invited to enter their bakes and sample cakes, tea and coffee in return for a small donation. April Gallagher was awarded the title for the ‘best tasting cake’, while Elle Hayes took home the prize for ‘most appealing cake’. A charity raffle was also held, with special prizes donated by local businesses. Prizes included signed Liverpool FC merchandise, Malmaison Hotel champagne afternoon tea, tickets for Knowsley Safari Park and various beauty treatments from local salons. Paul Crowley, senior partner at the firm, says: “I am delighted to say that we raised over £270 for Dementia UK and I hope our donation will go a long way in helping the life-changing work that they do for families.”
HIGH DEMAND FOR WARBURTON HEY HOMES Liverpool City Region developer Forth Homes has reported high demand for its Rainhill scheme ahead of its phase one completion.
Phase one of the development is due for a June completion 24 Your Move
The housebuilder has just secured its first plot reservation for the Warburton Hey project, which will include 10 three and four-bedroom properties. Danielle Joyce of Forth Homes says: “We launched a new price in March for the first phase release and have been delighted with the amount of calls and interest generated for these new homes. “Phase one is due for completion in June 2017 and we have just secured
our first plot reservation, with many more interested parties in the pipeline.” Houses are being built in three of Forth Homes’ signature styles at the development, including threebedroom, detached and semi-detached versions of ‘The Coleridge’ and fourbedroom, semi-detached ‘The Larkin’. The homes are available through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme, with buyers who make early reservations also benefitting from opportunities to choose some of their home’s internal features. NEWS PROSPECTIVE BUYERS ADVISED TO MAKE PREAUCTION PREPARATIONS
Brunlees Court features 62 apartments specifically designed for the over 65s
Potential buyers are being advised to fully prepare before attempting to purchase a property at auction.
RETIREMENT SPECIALIST TO UNVEIL TRIO OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS Retirement housebuilder McCarthy and Stone has a busy month ahead with three open day events planned across the Liverpool City Region. Visitors to the new schemes in Ainsdale, Crosby and Southport will have the opportunity to view show apartments and enjoy a glass of fizz in a special ‘homeowners lounge’. The first event of the month will take place at Brunlees Court on Cambridge Road in Southport on Friday 17 March and Saturday 18 March between 11am and 4pm. Meanwhile, those who want to take a closer look at retirement living in Crosby can visit Grove Court on Moor Lane on Wednesday 29 March and Thursday 30 March.
Charlotte Court on Mill Road in Ainsdale will also welcome prospective buyers on Friday 31 March and Saturday 1 April. The open days in Crosby and Ainsdale will both run from 11am till 4pm. Fiona Brooks, regional sales and marketing director at McCarthy and Stone North West, says: “With the new show apartments now open to view at our Merseyside developments these events will serve as a good opportunity for anyone interested to snap up one of these properties before it’s too late.”
Arranging surveys, becoming familiar with legal documents and viewing a lot before the sale are among essential steps according to Sutton Kersh Auctions. The Liverpool-based auctioneer, which is preparing to hold its next event at the city’s Crowne Plaza on 29 March, is encouraging attendees to take necessary precautions and carry out research to make the buying process less “daunting”. Advising auction goers, the firm recommends that going to see a property from the catalogue will enable prospective buyers to understand what they could get at the end of the sale. Meanwhile seeking legal advice is “highly suggested for everyone, particularly first-time buyers”, and taking the precaution of doing a survey on any chosen properties can “ensure safety in the future”. Sutton Kersh associate director, Cathy Holt, says: “Property auctions have a lot of benefits for buyers. The majority of properties sold at auction are often sold at 20% lower than their market value. That’s why auctions are great for first-time buyers. “We know that the first property auction can be confusing and daunting but our experienced and professional team are happy to offer advice and guide people in the right direction.” For more information visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions. Over 100 properties went under the hammer at the last Sutton Kersh auction

INTEREST CONTINUES AS FIRST AIGBURTH GRANGE BUYERS MOVE IN Show homes have recently been unveiled at Aigburth Grange
Strong interest is said to be continuing at South Liverpool’s Aigburth Grange development as the first residents move in. With one property now occupied and three more sets of homeowners due to move in over the coming weeks, Elan Homes’ mix of two and threebedroom houses is proving popular amongst couples and growing families. Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, says: “To date we’ve mainly been selling two and three-bedroom homes and so the majority of customers to date have been young couples, including those keen to get on the property ladder before starting a family.
“We’re also seeing strong interest in the fourbedroom homes from those who already have children and want to balance being close to the city and living somewhere quieter, but in an area that still has good local amenities including shops, bars and restaurants nearby along with schools.” ‘Sheldon’ and ‘Glossop’ style show homes were recently unveiled at the site where houses are being offered through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. Elan is also offering to cover the cost of Stamp Duty on homes at the development. For further details visit www.elanhomes.co.uk/developments/aigburth-grange.

NEWS PROMISING START FOR HOT TUB TRADER A new Liverpool City Region hot tub supplier is off to a promising start after launching its first branch at Dobbies in Southport.
Dr Atholl Duncan spent more than 30 years working with young cadets in Upton
HOUSEBUILDER PAYS HOMAGE TO WIRRAL HERITAGE AT NEW HOMES LAUNCH Stewart Milne Homes has launched its latest development in Wirral with the help of a local cadet detachment. Members of the Upton Air Cadets joined the housebuilder to officially unveil four new show homes at its Upton Pines scheme. The Upton Air Cadets have been based at the site off Arrowe Park Road for 50 years and will soon be relocated to a new base within Upton Pines. Upton Pines is a collection of 180 family homes comprising 33 apartments and a mix of 147 two, three, four and five-bedroom houses. Stewart Milne will also honour the squadron’s link to the area by naming
streets at Upton Pines after people who have had a big influence on the Upton force in the past. The main road through the development will be named Atholl Duncan Drive after instructor and World War Two veteran Dr Atholl Duncan, who spent more than 30 years working with the young cadets in Upton and as a local GP in the area. The show homes are open to the public from Thursday to Monday between 10am-5pm.
Northern Spas Outlet, which sells HotSpring Spas products across the area, has sparked interest from around 40 potential customers in its first three weeks of trading and is already targeting expansion. Founded by Jeff Murphy, who has almost 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, Northern Spas Outlet also provides services including hot tub installation and maintenance. Jeff continues to subcontract with housebuilders including Keepmoat Homes and Countryside, and he believes his contacts in the sector helped him identify the perfect location to set up shop. He says: “I still subcontract to housebuilders and that enables me to find out where the big developments are being built. One of the reasons I chose the Dobbies site in Southport is because there’s a large housing estate under construction over the road. “It’s also an affluent area where people have disposable income, so I thought it would be an ideal location for a new company with growth ambitions.” Jeff is also looking to expand Northern Spas Outlet further across the Liverpool City Region in the future. For more information visit www.northernspa.co.uk.

New award lined up for 2017’s NWPAs Awards will recognise success across the North West’s property sectors
26 Your Move
A new award will be presented at this year’s NWPAs under the ‘Best Affordable Home’ title. With entries now open for the 19 October event, organisers have revealed that two accolades will be presented in the category – one for best affordable home for sale and one for best affordable home for rent. The addition is in response to changes in the housing market, with calls being made for increased standards and affordability in the rental sector to ensure quality housing provision for long-term tenants. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which is behind the annual industry celebration at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral’s Lutyens Crypt, says: “Year on year we receive a wealth of entries for the best affordable home category, and with build to rent putting the spotlight on long-term, quality homes for
rent this year, it is high time to introduce a category which reflects this change in the market. “The division of the best affordable home award into two very distinct categories will ensure the judging panel can give sufficient consideration to the differing needs of buyers and renters. The property market is evolving and it’s important that we evolve with it, to truly celebrate the very best in North West property.” Countryside is the main sponsor of this year’s NWPAs, which will recognise success across the North West’s residential and commercial property sectors. PCS: Law, Redwing Living, UK Business Supplies, and The Foundry Agency are the category sponsors so far. Furnish That Room will sponsor the drinks reception. For more information about the award categories and to enter, visit www.nwpas.com.

NEWS MSB SOLICITORS EXPANDS SOUTH LIVERPOOL BRANCH MSB Solicitors has expanded its presence in South Liverpool to support its growing residential property department.
MSB Solicitors has expanded in South Liverpool
The company has taken the first and second floor of 74 Allerton Road, which sits directly opposite its flagship office. Four fee earners and four support staff have relocated to the new premises and there is room for up to six additional employees to join them. The office expansion comes amid restructuring at MSB, with conveyancing executive Craig Passey now heading up the off-plan purchase team, and a department has been created to focus on the new build residential housing market. Partner Tracey Quirk will oversee the development of the new team and will be responsible for handling more complex or high value matters. MSB Solicitors’ managing partner, Paul Bibby, says: “The expansion comes further to our city centre office move to 4 St Paul’s Square and is further linked with being able to house and support our growing team.
A Huyton housing development has seen an upturn in interest from potential buyers after the launch of a new show home.
“Staff numbers at MSB have risen by around 30% in the last 12 months. This growth hasn’t been part of a deliberate recruitment drive, rather organic growth in order to meet the demands of a spike in case work. It’s great to see and long may it continue.” MSB’s new Allerton Road office will also play host to the company’s cloud-based file archiving system, which will help it move away from off-site paper storage in the future.

WORDS BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS
connection LIVERPOOL - THE ‘REAL CAPITAL OF IRELAND’ LIVERPOOL’S CULTURAL LINKS WITH IRELAND ARE WELL KNOWN BUT WITH ST PATRICK’S DAY APPROACHING WHAT BETTER TIME TO DIG DEEPER INTO THE LESS FAMILIAR RESIDENTIAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO DESTINATIONS AND ASSESS THE CURRENT CELTIC DEMAND FOR PROPERTY HERE IN THE ‘REAL CAPITAL OF IRELAND’
p21-40.qxp_p03-12 07/03/2017 18:25 Page 35
y the early 20th Century the number of Irish-born residents in Liverpool was estimated at a whopping 200,000 roughly one third of the city’s entire population. The influx of Irish migrants to Liverpool, massively accelerated by the Great Famine (18451852), transformed the city; undeniably altering its cultural make-up and helping it become Britain’s great port on the west coast. During the famine years, a total of 1.5 million souls endured the treacherous 135-mile boat trip from Dublin to Liverpool in search of a new life. Whilst many soon departed for North America and other parts of the UK, some 35,000 remained. It’s safe to say they did not enjoy the warmest of welcomes, with job opportunities limited and housing options often horrendous. Work-wise, dangerous labour down at the docks was the best men could hope for, and the situation wasn't much better for women. Those who decided to stay in Liverpool congregated in the established Irish communities around Scotland Road and Vauxhall Road where they were subjected to appalling conditions in houses which, in many cases, were unfit for human habitation. “Their residential choices were strictly limited because they had to be close to the waterfront for the casual labour market,” says John Belchem, emeritus professor of history at the University of Liverpool and author of ‘Irish, Catholic and Scouse’. “It was for a collective mutuality that they remained together because if you were living close to one another you were there to help one another - even if the housing was poor.” As John explains, Irish migrants did much of the work digging out the seven and a half miles of docks which were of course central to establishing Liverpool as the ‘second city of the Empire’. However it wasn't just the Irish working class that made their mark on Liverpool’s architectural fabric. Ballymena-born William Brown, a wealthy merchant banker and MP, amassed a fortune large enough during his time in the city to fund the construction of a museum and library on what was then known as Shaw’s Brow. The William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860 at a personal cost to Brown of £40,000 - a “gift to the people of Liverpool”, as he called it at the time. Now home to parts of World Museum Liverpool and Liverpool Central Library, the imposing Grade II-listed construct sits on William Brown Street, a road celebrated for its collection of stunning public buildings. “A number of prominent Liverpool buildings have Irish links through their architects or engineers,” says Dr Ciarán Wallace, lecturer in Irish History at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Dr Wallace explains how the famous Victorian architect Richard Turner, born in Dublin, designed a new iron roof for Liverpool Lime Street station in 1848, whilst Irish architects applied to build both St George’s Hall and Wellington's Column. Meanwhile, it’s certainly no stretch to argue that Liverpool’s majestic Metropolitan Cathedral wouldn't be celebrating its golden anniversary

IRELAND’S IMPACT ON LIVERPOOL
Irish-born residents made up an estimated
ONE THIRD of Liverpool’s population by the early 20th Century
this May if it weren’t for the Irish. The dramatic increase in the city’s Catholic population following the Great Famine, combined with the restoration of the hierarchy, convinced assistant Bishop of Liverpool Alexander Goss of the need for a cathedral. Although it would be over 100 years before construction on the church began, there is no doubting how big a part the Irish migrants played in getting the idea off the ground. The connection between Ireland and Liverpool remains strong to this day and can be witnessed through the thousands of students from the Emerald Isle who choose to study here every year, drawn by the vibrant nightlife and welcoming atmosphere. Equally, Irish property investors have long viewed the city as the ideal location for a spot of speculation and continue to do so according to Dublin-born, Liverpool-based estate agent Gordon Cuthbert. “We deal with a lot of Irish clients with investments in Liverpool,” says Gordon, director of Beech Properties, who splits his time between the Irish capital and Liverpool. “I developed a portfolio of my own here in Liverpool and then others began asking me if I could manage their investments. “My experiences in Liverpool have been extremely positive and we’re really busy at the moment.” Gordon gives a number of reasons why he thinks the Irish still see Liverpool as a great place to invest in property and also praises the positive impact they have on the city’s housing stock. “The Irish come here because of the easy transport links, the huge following of the local football teams, to soak up the atmosphere and generally to enjoy a city they feel very much at home in.
The William Brown Library and Museum - a ‘gift to the people of Liverpool’
“Many of these investors purchase properties that, in a lot of cases, would have otherwise remained derelict for much longer. “They spend heavily on bringing these houses back into the rental market with the obvious benefit to the local economy through employment and ultimately improving the rental supply in Liverpool.” Phil Redmond, creator of ‘Grange Hill’ and ‘Brookside’ and chair of the Liverpool City Region’s Local Cultural Partnership (LCP), was raised by parents who both came from across the Irish Sea. He offers a rather more forthright opinion on the subject. “My ancestors helped build the city so it’s probably right they should own part of it,” he says. On a more serious note, Phil considers any Irish interest in Liverpool’s property market as good news and a sign that the city clearly rates as a viable investment opportunity. Although this investment isn’t limited to a particular area or property type, the fact that Irish investors are conceivably buying up plush waterside apartments overlooking the docks which their forefathers helped build, is an intriguing development. “It's really quite a nice irony that the Irish can now come to Liverpool as casual visitors rather than casual labourers,” adds John.
“Many [Irish] investors purchase properties that, in a lot of cases, would have otherwise remained derelict. They spend heavily on bringing houses back into the rental market with the obvious benefit to the local economy.”

A TESTING TIME
for tenants Photo: iStock/andresr
For many, renting is a temporary step with the eventual goal being home ownership. However, that isn’t always the case. While the term ‘generation rent’ was originally coined to describe those tenants who desperately wanted to get on the housing ladder but were left out in the cold thanks to a lack of mortgage finance and a shortage of affordable homes, it has now come to incorporate a whole new type of occupant - one who actively chooses to rent a home. Renting can offer a multitude of benefits, from the freedom to move at the drop of a hat, to the chance to live in an area and, indeed, a property which would otherwise be out of reach if you were looking to buy. However, the rental sector is not without its flaws. The last few years have brought about further turbulence for tenants - and landlords - which has only highlighted these. So what matters most to renters in the city? And what initiatives are in place to ensure those people renting Liverpool properties - whether short or long term - can access safe, secure homes at an affordable price? In the first of a series of features on the rental sector, Your Move takes a look at the issues impacting the city’s tenants.
QUALITY COUNTS Poor quality rental accommodation is a significant problem across the country. Just last month the Chartered Institute of Housing called for new minimum standards to be introduced for the private rented sector (PRS), suggesting landlords should receive tax incentives for signing up to accreditation schemes. In Liverpool, however, landlords no longer have a choice. From 1 April 2015 landlords have been required to buy licences for all of their private sector rental properties and must meet certain criteria in order to obtain the licence. In 2016 the first landlord in the city was fined for not signing up to the scheme. The landlord was charged £1,000 for failing to do so, over twice as much as the cost of a licence (around £400 although discounts are available for landlords registered to an industry body). An update on the scheme’s progress revealed 47,300 licensing applications have been started to date, and 26,000 of those have been or are about to be licensed. It claimed the initiative was helping to drive up standards in the rental sector.
GENERATION RENT
SAFE & SECURE One of the biggest concerns experienced by tenants is a lack of security. While one of the benefits of renting is the freedom to move whenever you like with just a couple of months’ notice, this obviously works both ways and often tenants are forced to move when they’d rather not. Interestingly the rental sector was a key focus of the government’s latest report on the issues facing the industry - the Housing White Paper. Communities secretary Sajid Javid announced plans to make renting more secure for families by implementing longer tenancies. The paper claimed families subjected to six or 12-month tenancies were having to move home before they planned to with children often having to change schools. Longer tenancies - potentially three years would give added security for renters. At present, however, the move has only been suggested for housing associations, and whether Liverpool landlords in the PRS will adopt it remains to be seen.
RISING RENTS The proposed ban on letting fees for tenants announced in last year’s Autumn Statement, while welcomed by many, has resulted in speculation that rents could rise. The theory is that if letting agents can no longer charge fees to clients they will have to increase the fees they charge landlords in order to recoup the loss. Landlords, in turn, may hike their rents to cover the increased costs. Rent increases - and speculation of them - cause significant headaches for tenants. Unfortunately for those based in Liverpool, they’re pretty common too. According to research by HomeLet, the North West saw rents rise by 2.2% between January 2016 and January 2017. The tenant referencing company last year ranked Liverpool number six in its top 10 cities where rents are rising fastest.
OUTLOOK Looking ahead, the rental market in Liverpool shows no sign of slowing, bucking the national trend with rising rents as well as demand. And the city is responding accordingly with numerous new purpose-built PRS developments coming to market. Last month plans to build more than 270 apartments near to Liverpool’s Project Jennifer regeneration scheme on Great Homer Street were given the green light while 60 new apartments are planned for the Lark Lane Conservation Area. Elsewhere, Peel will add a multi-storey PRS scheme to its Liverpool Waters plans at Princes Dock. Generation rent, it seems, will have no shortage of choice in Liverpool.

TALENT IN THE CITY
FROM JOHN LENNON TO BILL SHANKLY5 ARTIST TOM MURPHY HAS IMMORTALISED SOME OF LIVERPOOL’S BRIGHTEST STARS IN BRONZE AND ESTABLISHED HIMSELF AS THE PREFERRED SCULPTOR FOR MANY OF THE CITY’S LEADING INSTITUTIONS6 YOUR MOVE SAT DOWN WITH THE MAN BEHIND MANY RECOGNISABLE MERSEYSIDE PUBLIC ARTWORKS AND MEMORIALS TO DISCUSS HIS TECHNIQUES5 INSPIRATION AND UPCOMING PROJECTS6
INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW
WHERE DOES YOUR INTEREST IN THE ARTS STEM FROM AND HOW DID YOU COME TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT? I was interested in the arts from childhood, particularly sculpture. I started off making stuff like animals, feet and hands - things I could copy basically. Although I was good at art in school, I assumed there were others who were better than me so I held off until I was much older. I used to just look at things and think ‘I could sculpt that’ but I also had some success in painting when I won the BBC Art 88 competition in 1988. That was a big step forward for me because it made me think ‘maybe I have a bit of talent’. I still couldn’t make any money out of art back then, particularly in painting, so I carried on working in my day job but I had decided to be an artist whether I was financially successful or not. My breakthrough came when I realised I should focus on sculpture, so I decided to make a cast of John Lennon and put it in Clayton Square Shopping Centre. If you exhibit your work in a gallery, you usually only get art enthusiasts visiting them but if you make direct contact with the public that can be a powerful thing. Obviously there are benefits to exhibiting in a more formal setting but my advice to emerging artists who are looking to sell their work is that it’s always good to go directly to the public. YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY A SOUGHT-AFTER SCULPTOR6 HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH PROJECTS TO UNDERTAKE? I don’t think you have to have a personal connection to your subject matter, but it can help. Ultimately I think the job of a commissioned artist is to do what the client wants. Your role is to realise their dream and come up with something you feel is appropriate based on the conversations you’ve had with them. Some artists hate commissions but I love them because the client usually knows exactly what they want and knows I’m capable of delivering it having familiarised themselves with my work. It’s very rewarding when you come up with a design that meets the client’s criteria. I’ve had some commissions that were very challenging for a number of reasons. For example, the Hillsborough memorial was a difficult project because of the emotion involved. I enjoyed that challenge and felt I had to get it right because of the significance of the subject matter.

WHAT INSPIRED THE DESIGN OF THE HILLSBOROUGH MEMORIAL? I got the ideas for the Hillsborough memorial from various sources. One of them was actually Tutankhamun’s tomb after I saw a replica of it at an exhibition. On one of the sarcophagi there were these winged figures which resembled angels, but they were in fact guardians of the Egyptian king’s memory. I was inspired by the idea of memory guardians and carried this over to the Hillsborough memorial. All of the people featured on the memorial people just like us - are the guardians of the memory. That gave me a bit more latitude with the design, which ended up depicting those who lost their lives in the tragedy as birds in the background. The end result is a kind of dreamscape which I think represents how we all feel about the event. It’s now something that’s in our hearts more than our visual memory.
“IF YOU EXHIBIT YOUR WORK IN A GALLERY, YOU USUALLY ONLY GET ART ENTHUSIASTS VISITING THEM BUT IF YOU CAN MAKE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE PUBLIC THAT CAN BE A POWERFUL THING.”
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? At the moment I’m working on a sculpture of Everton’s Holy Trinity - Alan Ball, Howard Kendall and Colin Harvey - which will be placed near Goodison Park. I’m not sure exactly where yet. That will feature the three legendary midfielders as young men and I’ve attempted to convey their camaraderie on the football field. I felt comfortable tackling this subject matter because I’ve worked on numerous football sculptures in the past, including Johnny King for Tranmere Rovers and Bill Shankly for Liverpool. WHAT KIND OF PREPARATION IS NEEDED WHEN YOU’RE IMMORTALISING A PERSON IN BRONZE? Immortalising a person in this way involves tapping into their spirit, which means looking at every source, from photographs to videos. If a sculpture doesn’t have the subject matter’s energy it is kind of dead. You can channel spirit by investigating the person you’re sculpting and finding out what makes them tick. For example, with my Bill Shankly sculpture I attempted to evoke his similarity to James Cagney. Whenever he spoke he attempted to copy Cagney, putting his arms up like a boxer, and that force in the shoulders is very important to the sculpture. Without that and my understanding of him it would be a very lifeless sort of work. Whenever I’m working on a project like this I feel like the person is there with me. Maybe not in the early stages, but further down the line when it starts to take shape. When people leave us, figures we want to remember, there’s a void left behind and sculptures can fill that vacuum by putting a small part of their presence back into the world. WHICH OF YOUR SCULPTURES IS THE MOST PERSONAL TO YOU? I think it’s always got to be the memorials. They’re the most important because they have a real purpose, not just remembering one person but multiple people. Liverpool Blitz Memorial, for instance, is very personal to me because it serves this purpose and features my wife and two sons. HOW SIGNIFICANT A ROLE HAS THE CITY OF LIVERPOOL PLAYED IN YOUR CAREER? The best decision I made was deciding to exhibit my sculptures directly to the people of Liverpool. I’ve always made my sculptures for the people and when you do that the public responds. Quite a lot of my ideas come from the public and so does the funding. I’ve managed to keep plodding along all these years thanks to their support and I hope to carry on creating sculptures until I fall off my perch. Your Move 51

MINDFUL YOGA AND ITS HEALTH BENEFITS WITH RACHELE SMITH Mindful Yoga is based on a mix of the ancient wisdom of traditional Hatha Yoga and modern Mindfulness based Stress Reduction (MBSR) practices. Inviting you to tune into your body and be kind to yourself, it is a path, a journey, not to get somewhere else, but to be where we are, as we are in this very moment, with this very breath, whether the experience is pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. The approach is less about performance than about the exploration of experience moment by moment. The focus of a Mindful Yoga class is to tune into your breath, body, sensation, thought and emotions, and practice in a way that brings balance and harmony. I am a yoga teacher and adult educator and I have been teaching in educational and community settings for over fifteen years. I am also the founder of Mindful Yoga Liverpool. I was trained in Altea Andalucia, where I lived for ten years experiencing the excellent tuition of my teachers at the Mindful Yoga Academy. I have brought this practice back home to my community of Knowsley supported by Mindful People Community CIC. In class we practice both slowly and quickly. With longer holds we have the space to explore and with flow or vinyasa sequences we focus on staying present throughout the movement. Neither is better or more advanced and both offer us the opportunity to awaken. I am dedicated to putting Mindful Yoga and wellness strategies into the hands of students and I love sharing the transformational impact of Mindful Yoga with students in all stages of life. Benefits of Mindful Yoga • become more flexible • improve your posture • balance yourself physically and emotionally • remove toxins from your joints, hydrate & help deliver nutrients to your joints • improve musculoskeletal strength • develop body awareness • become more grounded • learn to let go of worries & concerns • become more in tune with others • tune into your inner guidance • get to know yourself Mindful Yoga taps into the innate potential for healing that we all have. It mobilizes our ability to cultivate embodied wisdom and self-compassion, and by so doing it teaches us to live our life and face whatever arises with awareness, integrity, clarity and an openhearted presence. This is why Mindful Yoga is a therapeutic practice, existing for YOU to discover how to use yoga tools to live more fully and mindfully, both on and off the mat!

LIVERPOOL’S CHANGING NIGHTLIFE
T
he very mention of the word ‘bingo’ once conjured images of pensioner-packed halls gradually decaying in the face of online competition, but that’s no longer the case in Liverpool. Part of a trend which has seen traditional games become unique attractions, Bongo’s Bingo offers a fresh twist on the probability pastime and has repackaged it for a younger, trendier audience. The event, which regularly takes place at Camp & Furnace, combines the core concept of bingo with rave intervals, dance-offs and star guests including David Hasselhoff and the Vengaboys. Drenched in nostalgia and irony, Bongo’s Bingo regularly brings a full house to the Greenland Street venue and is helping to sate Liverpool’s thirst for alternative nights out. “I think in general people no longer settle for the norm when it comes to a night out,” Bongo’s Bingo founder Johnny Bongo tells Your Move. “They’re looking to be entertained a lot more and people visiting the same bars week in, week out is becoming rarer.” The runaway success of Bongo’s Bingo over the last two years has led to the night expanding to other UK cities with plans for international growth, and has also inspired other local venues including Constellations to launch their own unconventional takes on the age-old game. But what is driving the demand for these original leisure experiences in Liverpool? According to Johnny, the rise of social media and its ability to give revellers a glimpse at the nightlife in cities across the world has played a part. “The surge in demand for these experiences
could be due to the influence of social media broadening people’s horizons,” he explains. “If you go on Facebook you might see footage from a world-class club night in Australia or America and want to experience something similar, rather than visiting the same venue with the same music each week. “Social media has raised people’s expectations in this game, which is a good thing because it means promoters and event organisers need to put in more effort, rather than simply hiring a room and a DJ and putting a few drinks promotions on. Creativity and originality is more important now.” Bingo is by no means the only traditional game to mutate into a modern day crowdpleaser in Liverpool, with crazy golf also enjoying a resurgence in the city. The wacky sport exploded back into the local limelight last year when Ghetto Golf launched at the former Cains Brewery, combining the game with cocktail chugging, DJs and street food set against the neon backdrop of a ghetto wonderland. Located in Liverpool ONE, the Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf attraction offers a similar experience, albeit with a broader audience in mind as families are catered for too. Since Ghetto Golf arrived in the Baltic Triangle at the tail end of 2016, Jungle Rumble is said to have seen a surge in business, suggesting that these new age attractions are mutually beneficial to one another rather than direct competitors. “When I started in the industry you would never talk about the bar next to you as they would take your custom, but these days neighbouring venues are working together to draw punters into the area with collaborative
social media campaigns,” says Carl Rice, deputy manager at Jungle Rumble. “When Ghetto Golf opened in December last year our turnover went up by about 50%. Saturdays are off the scale now. Ghetto Golf uses a booking system and we don’t, so we get a lot of walk-in customers who couldn’t get a reservation at Ghetto.” The concept of defying convention does not stop there as alternative quiz night are all the rage in Liverpool. Creative collective No-Wave, for one, has been finding success with its contests based on movies such as ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Elf ’ as well as TV shows ‘Arrested Development’ and ‘Peep Show’. Meanwhile, venues including The Shipping Forecast and The Merchant have injected fresh attitude and flavour into karaoke with hip hopthemed nights. This bold movement is showing no signs of slowing down, but where will it lead and which established pastime could be the next to undergo a contemporary transformation? According to Carl, the likes of Bongo’s Bingo and Jungle Rumble are no flashes in the pan. He predicts that more attractions of this nature will spring up in Liverpool going forward and believes he has identified a gap in the city centre market. “We’ll see more twists on traditional forms of entertainment in Liverpool, as long as events like Bongo’s Bingo remain popular,” he says. “Whoever comes up with the craziest idea will be the one who scores the next big break. “If somebody opened a full-scale bowling alley in town they would make millions. A wacky twist on bowling would go down well, but even if Hollywood Bowl was to move its alley from Edge Lane to the city centre they would turn over millions each year.” Your Move 57

& NEWS CRUST PLANS EXPANSION TO WOOLTON VILLAGE Italian restaurant Crust has revealed plans to launch another eatery in Liverpool by expanding into Woolton Village. The pizzeria wants to convert the former HSBC bank on the junction of Allerton Road and Woolton Street into its second branch in the city. A statement issued to Liverpool City Council says the proposed restaurant will “contribute positively to Woolton Village”. Launched by the team behind Duke Street’s Il Forno, Crust opened a branch on Bold Street in December 2015. The former HSBC bank in the heart of the historic village closed last summer.
NEW MENU AT THE BAGELRY Liverpool bagel shop and café The Bagelry is launching a new menu. The Nelson Street eatery, which opened just over a year ago, will be serving Belgian and vegan waffles alongside its array of bagels. The popular Chinatown spot also recently added jalapeno and cheddar bagels to its list of options on Wednesdays. The new menu items, like everything at The Bagelry, will be made using ethically sourced ingredients including woodland free range eggs from Raby Hall Farm in Bromborough. The Bagelry was launched with help from a crowdfunding campaign which raised over £3,500. £1,000 of the funding was spent on a specialised bagel oven.
ROPEWALKS RESTAURANTS ‘KEEP IT LOCAL’ FOR CHARITY Two Ropewalks restaurants have helped Liverpool charities by collecting generous donations. Miyagi on Bold Street and Lucha Libre on Wood Street recently gave 10% of their customers’ food bills for a month to Katie’s Story and The Whitechapel Centre respectively through the ‘Keep It Local’ campaign. Customers who showed a receipt from a local independent business of £5 or more were given 40% off their bill at both eateries. Miyagi raised £1,021 for Katie’s Story whilst £355 from Lucha Libre was donated to The Whitechapel Centre.
COWSHED Seel Street, L1 Cowshed may neighbour one of Liverpool’s best known nightspots, but its recent arrival has been discreet. You’d be forgiven for missing the hanging sign that has cropped up next door to the Blue Angel as, from the exterior, this steakhouse gives little away. My dinner date and I paid a Friday night visit and it was clear we weren’t the only ones to have cottoned on to the hidden gem. We were ushered to a cosy yet busy backroom dining area littered with homely features including a fireplace and well-stacked bookshelves. A mouth-watering cocktail choice awaited and, after much deliberation, I chose the Gin N’ Jam (£7.50) – a mix of Bombay Sapphire, lemon, sugar and raspberry jam. The jam provided a vibrant colour and flavour without being overpowering. Anticipating his red meat main, my partner opted for a glass of Shiraz (£6.25). The food options were laid out in front of us, complete with a diagram explaining each cut of the cow and recommendations of how they’re best served an indication of the kitchen’s expertise. While specials were available that night, the core menu leaves steak fans to customise their dish. Any 8oz cut of beef, cooked to taste and accompanied by rocket and parmesan, can be pimped up with sauces and sides.
REVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG
Lured in by the suggestion that rump (£12) “works harder than most other parts of the cow, leading to a greater amount of flavour” I picked this, medium cooked, for my centrepiece. I added a bourbon BBQ sauce (£2) and fries (£2.50). My partner chose the ribeye (£14), medium rare as recommended, with sweet potato mash (£3.25) and classic pepper sauce (£2). Homemade vegetable crisps (£3) occupied our taste buds as we waited for the main event, without the greasiness often found in packet versions. We also grazed on macaroni and cheese croquettes (£3), which were deliciously hot, gooey and served with a creamy tomato and jalapeno dip. With Cowshed’s main focus being meat, I had worried it would fall into that current trend of serving hefty slabs of the stuff which are more of a challenge than a meal - an approach to food which isn’t really for me. There was no need for concern though – our mains arrived perfectly proportioned and beautifully cooked. Silence descended as we concentrated on the tender, melt-in-the-mouth meats which were packed with flavour. A staple on many
traditional restaurant or pub grub menus, steak dishes in my experience have often been average and, at worst, tough or dry. Cowshed’s take is anything but, and shows the difference it can make when the beef is given this much focus and attention. My partner was also impressed with the depth of flavour in the pepper sauce, which stood out amongst other versions he’d tried. With menus laid out across the tables I’d been eyeing up Cowshed’s desserts and had to try the red velvet cheesecake (£5.50) which, on paper, sounded like a mind-blowing hybrid of two of my favourite puddings. A wild berry compote added a slight sharpness to complement the sweet cheesecake, which was creamy and tasty yet, despite my best efforts, too big to finish. My partner’s baked apple and raspberry tartlet with honeycomb and clotted cream (£6) was well presented and tasted just as good, although a little more apple would have made that treat complete. During an enjoyable evening at Cowshed the steak was certainly memorable, giving enough reason alone to explore beyond the eatery’s discreet exterior or, in our case, to plot a return.
