eBay and Amazon traders are in the taxman’s sights A lot of people seem to be doing it nowadays - buying and selling goods on the internet, using websites like eBay and Amazon. In January, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said that it had begun collecting data on users of online marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon and would be using this to pursue unpaid tax, and reports are filtering through to back this up.

Q: My husband, who works shifts for the Post Office, and has quite a lot of free time, is a keen golfer. A few years ago he began to buy wholesale lots of golf equipment like sets of clubs, and clothing, and then sell them individually on eBay and he has become quite successful at this. Somebody has told me that this is taxable, but surely it is just my husband's hobby, as he already has a job and has his tax deducted from this? A: There are no hard - and -fast rules to determine whether your husband's eBay activities are taxable. It is necessary to consider the facts in each individual case, and to take into account the type, frequency and history of your husband's transactions, along with his intentions when he purchases the goods. Having said all of that, based on what you have told me your husband's activities do sound very much like self employed trading and therefore subject to tax. This is because he seems to be buying and selling frequently, and is purchasing items with the motivation of selling them at a profit. The fact that your husband has a job is not really relevant and it is perfectly possible for someone to be employed and self-employed at the same time.

Q: Is he likely to get into trouble with the HMRC? A: Small-scale internet traders, who sell goods on websites such as eBay and Amazon, are being hit with very tough penalties if they do not declare their income and pay the appropriate tax on their profits. According to a new study HMRC are levying hefty penalties to such traders using its 'deliberate defaulters' programme, which means that penalties of around 59 per cent of the amount of tax owed are being reported- on top of paying back the tax itself, and interest. The best course of action to take now is to seek help to bring his tax up to date by making a voluntary disclosure to HMRC - this could help minimise the penalties which will be due.

NEWS LFC TRAINING BASE SWITCH MOVES A STEP CLOSER Liverpool Football Club’s (LFC) plans to leave its Melwood training base have moved a step closer.

LFC has had a base in West Derby for over 50 years

The club has submitted a planning application to Knowlsey Council to create a new £50 million, state-of-the-art campus in Kirkby which will accommodate both the Reds’ first team and academy training operations. Earlier this year, LFC held a consultation with local residents over proposals to make way for 160 family homes on the Melwood site once the first team departs in 2019. Your Move recently opened up the debate on Melwood’s future and views on a residential scheme in the area were decidedly mixed, with some parties concerned the club’s departure will have an adverse effect on the area’s fortunes. The club says the land, which is enclosed on all sides by housing, can provide space for “much needed new family homes in the city”. A planning application for the new development at Melwood is expected to be submitted soon.

One in four stay with parents to save for a deposit Countryside’s Highfield Green has been attracting first-time buyers

A new study has found that a quarter of under 34-year-olds are living with their parents to save for a deposit on a mortgage. Out of the 860 first-time buyers surveyed by housebuilder Countryisde, 26% have moved back or are continuing living with their parents in order to get the necessary funds together. First-time buyers Joe, 27, and Victoria, 29, have just bought their first home at Countryside’s Highfield Green development in Kirkby after using the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. The pair have lived separately at their family homes to save up for a deposit for the past year. Joe says: “This is the first-time we will be living together as we’ve both been living in our parents’ homes to save up in the past year. “We’ve been together for five and a half years, but in the last year we started seriously talking about buying a home, and going looking at developments. “The show home at Highfield Green made the choice easy for us, and we wanted to move in straight away.”

PLANS IN FOR GEORGIAN TERRACE RESTORATION The developer acquired the townhouses earlier this year from the council.

Plans are in to restore a row of listed terraced homes in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter. The nine rundown townhouses, which form an L-shape along Percy Street and Upper Parliament Street, have lain empty since 2008. Developer Elliot Group has submitted a planning application to Liverpool City Council for the scheme, which it says will be worth a total of £3.2 million once complete.

Subject to council approval, the refurbished properties, which will be marketed as family homes, are expected to be ready for occupation in spring 2018. NEWS Home buyers can achieve better deals than 90% mortgages, says law firm A Liverpool law firm is encouraging first-time buyers to save for as big a mortgage deposit as they can manage. The increasing availability of loans of 90% or more paints a positive picture for house hunters, but Tracey Quirk at MSB Solicitors reminds buyers that the bigger the deposit, the better the deal will be from lenders. Tracey, head of residential property at MSB’s South Liverpool branch, says: “The increasing availability of higher loan to value (LTV) mortgages can make a big difference to the period a first-time buyer needs to save - but consider too that this will impact significantly on your repayment period. “My advice would be to save up as much as you possibly can in advance of applying for a mortgage. If nothing else, it will demonstrate to lenders that you are serious about owning your own home.” Research carried out by Hamptons International recently revealed that it takes the average single buyer in the UK almost 12 years to save for their first home, based on raising a 15% deposit investment. Liverpool-based Bluerow Homes has become the first agent in the UK to sign up for a new online platform called love2move.

The deal enables the firm to complement its existing offering by providing fixed price internet property sales and many of the same services as an online estate agent. The love2move website combines the functions of an internet agent and popular dating app Tinder, allowing customers to browse through a catalogue of properties matching their requirements via a swipe interface and communicate with the seller through a built-in chat function. Helen Griffin-Booth, director of Duke Streetbased Bluerow Homes, says: “As soon as I heard about the love2move concept I knew it would ideally complement our existing service. For most people their home is their largest and most important asset and the vast majority of them value the support of a traditional estate agency which has expertise and knowledge of the local marketplace. “The fact that love2move has been developed by another traditional estate agent with likeminded values means that we can open our business up to another area of the market without eroding our traditional sales.” Four more agents in the North West region are said to be on the verge of adopting the concept.

Communal ‘avenues’ will help enhance the Welsh Streets

The golden era when residents felt they could safely leave their doors unlocked is behind us, but there is evidence to suggest the community spirit is back on the rise in the Liverpool City Region. From residents’ facilities in PRS (private rented sector) apartment blocks to shared outdoor spaces in housing regeneration projects, communal facilities are becoming more prominent in the city’s latest residential schemes and developers are harnessing them to foster a sense of togetherness. For instance, The Keel apartment complex at Liverpool’s famous waterfront includes a residents’ gymnasium and outdoor amenity spaces where social connections can be forged, while a concierge service brings added security to this urban community. The development’s management company Touchstone Residential even runs an events and services programme to encourage tenants to make use of these facilities and engage with their neighbours. Residents-only parties, BBQs, baking classes and personal training sessions are regular occurrences, and these initiatives have helped Touchstone target customers whose lifestyle requirements include community living. “We’ve built a community at The Keel by forming relationships with our customers and listening to their needs,” explains Sadie Malim of The Keel. “While many tenants will inevitably just be looking for a new place to live, increasingly people are choosing to rent in a specific development as a lifestyle choice. Our customers ‘sleep in their apartment but live in the building’ and we try to ensure that we make our communal areas and service levels reflect that mantra.” Meanwhile the enduring popularity of longerstanding city centre developments like Beetham Tower and the Unity Building proves shared spaces help to attract long-term tenancies and owner occupiers. “I think the increased prominence of communal features is helping to create communities,” says Debra Beach, branch manager at Liverpool agent Keppie Massie Residential which markets homes in various central apartment schemes. “We have found that developments which

“ Research shows that the more social connnections and friendships residents make, the more likely they are to renew a tenancy. ” offer them tend to attract a mix of owner occupiers and renters, and that encourages longterm lettings because it is an environment where people can set up a home, rather than a stop-gap solution.” It isn’t just contemporary apartment schemes that are fostering the community spirit - several housing projects outside of the city centre include shared spaces where neighbourly vibes can flow. Among them is Toxteth’s upcoming Welsh Streets, a regeneration project which will see old Victorian terraced housing returned to life as a range of two, three and four-bedroom family homes, complete with communal avenues where residents can mingle. “Thriving communities are created through friendships and strong social connections,” says Martin Ellerby, head of new business and innovation at Welsh Streets developer PlaceFirst. “A developer can’t ‘create’ a thriving community, but we can try to create the right environmental conditions to promote the social interactions necessary to establish a sense of community. “We can ensure our residents enjoy attractive, communal spaces where children can play and neighbours can get to know each other. Research

shows that the more social connections and friendships residents make, the more likely they are to renew a tenancy.” The steadily rising number of residential developments with communal features suggests a healthy demand for them, but what is fuelling this yearning for community sentiment? According to Debra, the market conditions are playing a part. With the decline of the social housing sector and a surge in lifelong renters leading to a boom in purpose-built rental accommodation, occupants of such housing are craving an alternative to the security homeownership brings. “The idea that everybody should buy doesn’t work in certain economic climates and at the height of the housing boom the priority for social housing was turned on its head,” she explains. “Alongside this, I think we’re getting to a point where there is a whole generation of young people who are thinking ‘am I ever going to be able to get enough money together for a mortgage?’ “Generation rent is seeking security and being part of a community can bring that. They are looking for a place where they feel safe and well looked after.” Martin adds that the rise of social media has helped to create a sharing economy among the younger generation of house hunters, and he believes the promise of community living is of growing value to this demographic. “I think the younger generation is looking for something different, particularly as many are locked out of home ownership without the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’,” he says. “The younger generation has also grown up with social media and the ‘sharing economy’ and, because of that, I think the idea of communal features is an attractive one, particularly in core cities like Liverpool where many people may be new arrivals. “By offering these facilities within residential developments, it can make it easier to form new social connections and friendships.” One could argue society has lost something in these times of heightened home security, but Debra believes the recent success of communal facilities, shared amenity spaces and the schemes which are providing them are helping to rekindle the community values of a bygone age. “I think we’ve become more insular as a society over the years - the days when you can leave your doors unlocked are long gone,” she says. “But in an age of social media, there is a willingness to engage with people more and hopefully these types of schemes will bring that sense of neighbourliness back.”

INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

When did you first become interested in fireworks and pyrotechnics? The first time I was really touched by fire was when I was a teenager. I was working in a metal foundry where I discovered the fusion of the metals, the light on the workers and the spark when the fire touched things. That was the beginning for me. Remember, fire is not an element but rather the time in between - a short time of energy which is very impressive and one that you remember. I began to consider how people had never used fire in a theoretical way, so I started to rethink about what fire conceptually means to us. I started with the sun, how it was created by a massive nuclear explosion and provides us with our light, and then how the sun revealed the cosmos. The opposite of this is the time of destruction, the time of something disappearing. What you see today in the sky may have already disappeared because by the time it arrives to you it is possibly already finished. This kind of subversion runs throughout all of my work. For me, it’s about how you can show something and feel it inside you and what kind of poetry you can develop in the contradiction between the two.

Where did the idea for Groupe F come from? The idea for the group originally came from street theatre. A lot of the members of Groupe F came from working outside traditional theatres in the 1980s and trying to express something out in the public domain. We had also spent a long time playing with fire and fireworks, so we had been creating a structure to reinvent the way to use the beautiful light of pyrotechnics and flame. You’ve created spectacular shows for high profile events throughout your career, including the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but which has been your favourite? Sometimes you do a job where you unify a lot of people around an abstract fact and it makes you feel happy, so to tell you which show is the best is very difficult. I remember a job we did in Brixton in the mid-1990s with 160 local kids which was a very modest production but an incredibly moving one. I’m not sure if it was the best thing I’ve done artistically, but in terms of the human story it was probably the most moving. Of course, I will always remember the fireworks we did on the Eiffel Tower for the millennium celebrations. The production was a simple idea, 100% abstract - but the show inspired people with a lot of hope. And the most difficult to execute? A recent one in Seoul, South Korea to mark the opening of the Lotte World Tower - the world’s fifth tallest skyscraper. We had to deal with 500 points of display and understand the Korean culture and the country’s different regulations. Luckily the show went fantastically well and everyone was very touched by the elegance of it all. Are you a fan of The Beatles? How happy are you to be involved with the Sgt. Pepper’s celebrations? When they called me I said ‘Are you sure? This French guy?!’ The influence of The Beatles has been huge right across the world. I think they chose me because they understand my point of view about global poetry. I picked up a little bit of English as I started to work around the world, but I never had lessons at school, so I didn't understand the words of The Beatles. This means when I was a teenager, I

couldn't understand the lyrics of ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ - I just remembered the poetry of the words. So, for me, ‘Lucy in The Sky’ or anything else from The Beatles was just sound and reason I projected my own imagination onto it. The Beatles are a monument, a huge thing that means different things to different people around the world. Every person has his/her own Beatles. Has it been difficult to come up with a show based around just one song? As we speak I’m designing the show, trying to strike a balance between ideas and efficiency. If you work with something which is absolutely virgin, it’s simple because you’re not going to insult people. In this case there are billions of people who have their own idea of Lucy, but I have my own vision for her and it’s only mine. People are waiting for a beautiful firework show with Lucy so what do I do? I still haven’t decided. My idea for Lucy is for you to close your eyes and to feel that beautiful music and at the same time celebrate it with some kind of interpretation but who am I to decide what Lucy is? What should people expect from the show? I want to do the opposite of a normal fireworks show. Camp Hill is a very quiet area where hopefully the audience can be seated. We are celebrating 50 years since ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ but there is also a line that runs from ‘Lucy’ in 1967 right up until today. We are trying to think about what has happened in that intervening half a century. Scott Gibbons, who will create a new sound score for this event inspired by ‘Lucy in the Sky’ and other songs from ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’, has been very closely involved with the planning. People think this is going to be big, enormous, but no, it’s just a little bit of art with pyro!

‘Suspended Time’ will take place at Camp Hill in Woolton on 1 June at 8pm. Liverpool Lantern Company and Circo Rum Ba Ba will get things underway, transforming the park with weird and wonderful street theatre. The headline performance from Groupe F begins at 10.30pm, lasting until 11.30pm. Your Move 41

ARTISAN EVENT TO BRING LOCALLY MADE TREATS Foodies will be in for a treat this August when The Artisans Market heads to St George’s Hall. Deep filled pies, sweet and savoury pastries, jams, chutneys, fudge and cheeses are among the locally produced delights expected to be on offer during the 11-13 August event. A night market on St George’s Plateau will also feature live music, street food and a licensed bar on the first evening of the event, which forms part of the city’s Summer of Love celebrations. There’ll also be other makers, creative workshops and ‘flower power’ face painting artists on hand at the landmark building.

SPANISH BAR TO STAGE ‘CARMEN’ A stage production of ‘Carmen’ will take place at Liverpool’s Alhambra bar (pictured) next month, as the venue plans to introduce a rolling calendar of events. Limited tickets are available for the 23 June performance by the Alandalus Dance Company, which will take place in the courtyard of the Spanish food and drink venue in Cains Brewery Village. Paul and Paula Rimmer, who recently launched Alhambra, are also hosting regular flamenco dancing and acoustic nights and are planning ‘language exchange’ sessions for customers to learn Spanish by chatting to Spanish students and nationals who, in turn, can brush up on their English.

CAFÉ PLAN FOR BOLD STREET RETAILER Clothing store Resurrection is looking to incorporate a café on its first floor. According to plans put forward to Liverpool City Council, the “small area” of the shop would serve teas, coffees, organic juices and already prepared food such as sandwiches, soups and cakes to customers.

OUR KITCHEN Bold Street, L1 Walking up Liverpool’s Bold Street, the question ‘where should we eat?’ is now more difficult than ever with dozens of restaurants and cafés tempting you in. Our Kitchen is one of the newest to open its doors and offers perhaps what Bold Street has been missing - a restaurant serving exclusively vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Although other restaurants offer vegetarianfriendly dishes, Our Kitchen is an entirely meat-free zone, giving diners total peace of mind. Speaking to my dining partner who is vegetarian, this was a big selling point to her as she is often served the wrong dishes (with meat!) at other restaurants. Once inside, the décor was simple and relaxed with wooden floors, tiled walls and a pop of colour from the spider web of light fixtures above. Arriving on a Thursday evening, the restaurant was already busy which created a welcoming ambience. To drink, my friend selected a liver tonic juice (£3.75). With beetroot, red cabbage, lime and apple, she loved the healthy concoction. I’m not the biggest fan of juices so I stuck to a glass of the house vegan rosé (£4.50) instead. The restaurant offers a

REVIEW BY HANNAH FOWLER variety of vegetarian and vegan options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a large selection of gluten-free and dairy-free substitutes on the menu, which my friend was really impressed with. The majority of the dinner menu is small plates, giving you the opportunity to try and share different dishes. Don’t be fooled by the term ‘small plates’ though - the portions are big and generous! I chose the loaded hummus with focaccia bread (£4.50) and the brie & mango quesadilla with avocado and sour cream (£6.95). The creamy hummus was served with crispy flatbreads instead as they had run out of focaccia, but it was still an enjoyable small plate to eat. The quesadilla filling was an interesting combo and, although not my favourite dish on the menu, it was packed with flavour and presented attractively. By far my star dish was the serving of ultimate nachos (£9.95). Topped with plenty of cheese, tomato salsa, guacamole and black beans, the much-loved Mexican staple was delicious and is large enough for four to easily share.

My friend decided on the grilled halloumi salad with tahini (£5.50) and the broccoli, green beans and mangetout with soy and ginger (£3.75). The earthy vegetables were livened up by the oriental spices and the halloumi salad was bursting with fresh flavours. Finally, we chose two sides to share: parmesan and parsley chips (£3.95) and crispy kale with lemon and sea salt (£2.95). I must admit, kale has never appealed to me but served as salty crisps, it was surprisingly moreish! As you can imagine by the multiple dishes listed above, by this point we were beyond stuffed so another visit is definitely needed to try the selection of desserts including a delicious sounding chocolate and macadamia brownie (£4.50). As a meat eater I was dubious as to whether Our Kitchen would appeal to me but as soon as the food arrived, my worries disappeared. Our Kitchen proves that the absence of meat doesn’t mean an absence of flavour. It’s a welcome addition to Liverpool and will appeal to anyone who enjoys fresh tasty food, regardless of whether you eat meat or not.

Every Tuesday is ‘Meat & Music’ night at the Seel Street club

with complementary BBQ food and live music on the menu. Meanwhile over on Bold Street, American-style barbecue chain Red Dog Saloon has opened its first northern branch just in time for National BBQ Week. Menu highlights include Alabama smoked chicken, maple bacon wings and Red Dog Saloon’s toughest eating challenge ‘The Devastator’ - a giant burger comprising three beef patties, pulled pork, six rashers of bacon and six slices of American cheese competitors get 10 minutes to

finish the lot. Take a trip to the Baltic Triangle this summer and you’ll find FINCA hosting a number of Cuban-themed cookouts at Constellations on Greenland Street. The pop-up turned permanent eatery will be serving up its flavour-packed ‘FINCA BBQ Box’ featuring baby back ribs in guava sauce, mojo chicken thighs and rice and beans alongside avocado and mango salsa - all finished off with a coriander and chilli dressing.

Ital’s Veggie Kebabs SKAUS Salmon The guys at Caribbean inspired, all vegan pop-up Ital Fresh share their recipe for Jerk Lime Summer Vegetable Kebabs with Charred Sweet Potato. From 1 June Ital Fresh will be in situ at District Yard in the Baltic Triangle every Thursday evening until September.

Local lads Dan and Josh, who set up uber-cool Scandinavian-inspired pop-up SKAUS earlier this year, give us their recipe for Salmon Burgers which they will be serving at The Merchant’s Bank Holiday Food Fight at the end of the month.

To make the jerk marinade:

Two tbsp. allspice (ground) Two Scotch Bonnet peppers Two tbsp. fresh thyme Six garlic cloves One inch fresh ginger Four spring green onions Two tsp. brown sugar One tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Zest of three limes Juice of three limes

Ingredients (makes six or 12 sliders): 600g salmon chopped into 1cm dice 200g smoked salmon chopped Handful of breadcrumbs 4 tsp. of apple cider vinegar One shallot diced One small bunch of dill chopped One tbsp. English mustard One tsp. capers Cold pressed rapeseed oil for cooking

Method: • Add all the ingredients to a high-speed food processor and blend to form a paste. For the kebabs, roughly chop your favourite seasonal organic vegetables - we've used corn, courgettes, peppers, red onion and pineapple. Generously cover in the marinade. Leave those spices to mingle with the veg for a few hours until your coals are white hot - then they're ready for the grill. Skewer the veg onto pre-soaked bamboo sticks, place on the grill and turn regularly. They should take 10 minutes. Next, slice some sweet potatoes into 1cm discs, brush with olive oil and place face down onto the grill until charred. Serve on a bed of rice and peas and scatter with paprika, spring onions and a squeeze of fresh lime. Enjoy!

Six rye buns, or seeded brown buns if unavailable, toasted on the barbecue Pickled seasonal vegetables such as cucumber or fennel Favourite condiment (mayonnaise and tomato ketchup both work well)

Method: In a food processor, blend one quarter of the salmon with vinegar, mustard, shallot and a good pinch of salt to make a mousse to bind the burger. Add the rest of the diced salmon and smoked salmon, capers, dill and breadcrumbs and more salt if necessary (you can cook a small amount off to check the seasoning at this point). Form into patties, drizzle with the rapeseed oil and put on the barbecue but avoid the flames. Cook until golden brown on the bottom side and turn over and cook until salmon is opaque but still flaky and resembles the texture of a cooked salmon fillet. Dress the buns, add the salmon burger and you’re done!

Even the most humble of back garden barbecue fare can be elevated above the norm with this signature house rub from the team at Slim’s Pork Chop Express on Seel Street. According to general manager Chris Mitchell, the seasoning is usually applied to beef brisket but will work just as well with most BBQ classics including chicken, lamb and sausage. Chris advises that the rub should be used as a base and encourages you to play around with measurements for different meats - i.e. chicken would benefit from more paprika, pork more fennel, etc.

lamorous guests recently gathered at Allerton Manor restaurant The Old Stables for a day of fashion, fizz and horseracing. The South Liverpool eatery laid on a sumptuous morning feast before transporting attendees on a Chester Ladies Day outing. Fresh avocado on sourdough toast and a classic full English breakfast were among the options for dressed up diners, before their day in the sunshine at Chester Racecourse. After plenty of bubbly and a few winners all round, the group was welcomed back to The Old Stables for a three-course meal to round off the occasion along with al fresco drinks on the venue’s terrace. The stylish racegoers enjoyed evening dishes including spicy chilli squid, braised beef and homemade raspberry bakewell.
