NEWS HUYTON PUPILS GET HEALTH AND SAFETY LESSON FROM HOUSEBUILDER Huyton schoolchildren have been given an important lesson in health and safety by Countryside.

The children enjoyed the interactive assembly

The housbuilder paid a visit to Roby Park Primary School as part of its ongoing community safety initiative. Following the launch of its Wilson Chase development on the edge of Huyton Village, Countryside held an assembly at the nearby Eastern Road school to educate the local children on the dangers of live building sites through the use of props and demonstrations. Colin Murray, associate director of health and safety at

Countryside, says: “The safety of the local residents is of the utmost importance when it comes to building sites, which is why we host regular health and safety assemblies at primary schools that neighbour our developments.” Steven Hatton, headteacher at Roby Park Primary School, adds: “We really appreciate Countryside taking the time to visit our school to educate the children on this important issue and the potential hazards that can arise.” To find out more about Countryside’s Wilson Chase development call 0151 909 2523.

OPEN EVENT TO SHOWCASE VICARAGE GARDENS UP CLOSE Prospective buyers will be given their first chance to see Childwall’s new Vicarage Gardens development up close this month. The two detached homes by Delph Estates will be showcased during a special two-day open event on 11-12 November. Due to be completed around the end of the year and the start of 2018, the four and five-bedroom properties are said to be progressing ahead of schedule. Experts from Delph Estates will be on hand during the event to provide more information about the houses, which are set within a gated development and come with extensive private grounds. Ian Blundell, director of Delph Estates, says: “Attendees will have the first chance to get a feel for the properties and the size of the place.” During the event there will also be an opportunity to reserve the homes, which are already said to have been drawing interest from house hunters. Knowsley homes prove popular amongst ‘right-sizing’ buyers The Redrow apartments are drawing interest from ‘right-sizing’ parents and investment buyers

New Knowsley apartments are proving popular among ‘right-sizing’ buyers according to the developer behind the scheme. Redrow says that whilst its Summerhill Park development continues to attract first-time buyers, the King’s Court apartments at the site have also been drawing interest from a host of other house hunters. Lesley Myers, sales manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “While many of our purchasers are first-time buyers, we’re finding lots of parents are buying here to move closer to children who either live at Summerhill Park or nearby. “Many are ‘right-sizing’ after their children have left home, while others are choosing to use the property as a city bolthole or an investment purchase.” A show home was recently opened at the development off Thomas Lane, where properties are due to be ready to move into next spring. King’s Court comprises two three-storey apartment buildings, each comprising 15 two-bedroom homes. For more information visit www.redrow.co.uk/summerhill.

NEXT YEAR

The NWPAs 2018

A circus of A

year of North West residential property success was recently celebrated as the spectacular annual NWPAs returned. The glittering black tie event, sponsored by Countryside, rolled into Lutyens Crypt at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral with a fabulous circus theme, and brought a host of firsts for 2017. There were brand new awards, new sponsors and, of course, a new group of worthy nominees and winners. Long established Liverpool-based architect practice Brock Carmichael was among the firms backing the event for the first time this year, as it sponsored the prestigious Regeneration Award on the night. “The practice has been involved in regeneration since our inception

in 1974 so we’re very proud to be here tonight championing it,” said managing partner Chris Bolland during the event, which also saw a number of awards being given for commercial property achievements. “The award is showcasing some fantastic regeneration projects and I think the future’s strong for that.” Glamorous NWPAs attendees enjoyed a drinks reception sponsored by Furnish That Room before sitting down to a lavish threecourse meal. There was also entertainment in the form of live dance, music and magic, and guests went head to head in a quiz using interactive keypads. The tech gadgets also paved the way for the presentation of the inaugural Interactive Award, which saw guests choose the best dressed table.

Plus there was tough competition throughout the other categories this year, which brought a big night for double prize-winning developer Urban Splash. The firm was awarded the Best Commercial Scheme title for its Stubbs Mill project in Manchester, before winning the Best New Home (large scheme) award for its modular housebuilding concept, ‘House’. Liverpool agent Abode also continued its reign of success as it held onto its Residential Property Agency of the Year crown for the fourth year running. The NWPAs 2017 esteemed panel of expert judges included Alastair Shepherd, director of Falconer Chester Hall (FCH); Lesley MartinWright, CEO of Knowsley Chamber; and Elaine Cunningham, owner of Elaine Cunningham Design Studio.

Preparations are already underway for next year’s NWPAs and it’s never too early to get involved. As the prestigious event returns on 11 October 2018 for its 15th year, once again shining the spotlight on the North West’s property achievements, two brand new awards will be presented. The Innovation Award will be open to all propertyrelated businesses as it recognises those which are working to keep up with the fast-paced changes in the sector and stay relevant to their client base. The Community Award will also be open to entrants from right across the region’s property sector as it celebrates the businesses which are getting involved in the communities they work within and giving something back. For full details of next year’s categories, which will acknowledge a year of success amongst top North West residential and commercial property firms and projects, log on to www.nwpas.com. Tickets for the event and sponsorship opportunities are also now available.

Blueoak Estates’ Lingdale project in West Kirkby was named the winning small scheme and Iain MacLean, the developer’s managing director, said: “I’m really proud of the Blueoak Estates team for winning this award. It really was a great team effort and it's a fantastic scheme.” Wellington Grove by Forth Homes was chosen as the runner up.

Urban Splash’s modular concept ‘House’ achieved a victory in the large scheme section, providing the firm’s second win of the night. Jonathan Falkingham, co-founder of Urban Splash, which also picked up the Best Commercial Scheme prize, said: “With ‘House’ we’re trying

to introduce a new model to housing by creating designer homes that people can bespoke themselves to suit how they want to live. We’re delighted to have won an award for this.” Countryside received another nod as it was named runner up for The Ashley at Gateacre Park.

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY AGENCY OF THE YEAR Sponsored by Redrow Homes Lancashire Abode retained its crown as the Residential Property Agency of the Year. BEST PROPERTY L AW F I R M Sponsored by UK Business Supplies In its final year with managing partner Paul Bibby at the helm, MSB Solicitors took home the coveted Best Property Law Firm title. Client testimonials, growth, customer service and innovative approaches were considered during the judging of the category, which attracted region-wide entries. Paul, who recently announced his retirement from MSB next year, said he was “delighted” for the firm to win and have its prominence acknowledged. He added: “I think this recognises that MSB is not just a law firm on a onedimensional level. We embrace every single aspect of community life and I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve won once again.” Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors was announced as runner up.

The 2017 NWPAs Winners BEST AFFORDABLE HOME TO RENT OR BUY This year’s Best Affordable Home category recognised rental properties as well as those for sale, and judges said nominees demonstrated “clever design, careful planning and creative flair”. The panel chose One Vision Housing’s (OVH) Kilnyard Road project in Crosby as the winner. Roy Williams, chief executive of OVH, said: “We’re absolutely delighted. To have won an award in such prestigious company really means a lot.” Countryside was named runner up for The Weaver at Barrowcroft Green.

Standards were high as all nominees were said to have built “strong student communities garnered through excellent customer care, events, social media and charity work”, and Fresh Student Living was named the winner. Jennifer Noctor, head of operations at Fresh Property Group, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised for all the hard work we’ve put forward. “Customer service and keeping standards high is our focus with student accommodation so we’re really glad that it’s been recognised tonight.” Caro Student Living took the runner up place.

Redrow Homes enjoyed a successful night as it won in a category which attracted an “outstanding” level of interior design quality this year. Reacting to the victory Emma Brindley, group interior design manager for Redrow Homes, said: “We’re absolutely over the moon to have won this award and I’m so proud of the whole team.” The Regent at Belgravia by Countryside was named runner up.

R E G E N E R AT I O N A W A R D Sponsored by Brock Carmichael Residential projects dominated the shortlist for this year’s prestigious Regeneration Award, with Countryside’s Highfield Green development in Kirkby taking the title. Tracey Ward, sales manager at Countryside which previously won the prize for its New Broughton Village scheme, said: “We're delighted to have won the Regeneration Award again for the second year running – this time for Highfield Green. The scheme has been really successful.” The transformation of Liverpool city centre’s Chancery House was named runner up.

JU D G ES’ S P EC I A L AWA R D Sponsored by The Sovini Group In its 15th anniversary year, the charity Housing People Building Communities (HPBC) received a special award for its work creating low-cost homes in the city. Its pioneering ‘sweat equity’ initiative has helped make properties more affordable by enabling ‘partners’ to spend 500 hours building their home in return for a £10,000 deposit contribution. Shannon Ledbetter, founder and chair of HPBC, said: “It’s absolutely amazing that we’ve won this award. It’s testimony to the thousands of people and supporters who have believed in us from the very beginning. “We’re hoping to move on from here to bigger things with more people and having more exciting projects; helping people to find good, affordable houses which they can call home.”

I N T E R AC T I V E AWA R D Sponsored by BMD Law In a first for 2017, guests at the black tie ceremony were asked to choose the best dressed table on the night. Attendees cast their votes via a digital keypad and there could only be one winner. Donning tuxedos and glittering gowns, guests at the Luxor Estates table took the first accolade of the night.

TALENT IN THE CITY

“War Horse is the biggest show that I’ve ever been involved with.”

A

FTER EIGHT RECORDBREAKING YEARS ON LONDON’S WEST END PERFORMANCES IN COUNTRIES AND OVER SEVEN MILLION SATISFIED THEATREGOERS ‘WAR HORSE’ FINALLY MAKES ITS WAY TO LIVERPOOL AHEAD OF ITS -NIGHT RUN AT THE LIVERPOOL EMPIRE WE CAUGHT UP WITH PLAYWRIGHT NICK STAFFORD TO FIND OUT HOW HE TURNED THIS MUCH-LOVED CHILDREN’S NOVEL INTO AN INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED THEATRICAL MEGA HIT

INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

How did the idea to turn ‘War Horse’ into a play first come about? It started about 14 years ago when the mother of a National Theatre (NT) director put her son, Tom Morris, onto Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘War Horse’. Tom had been saying to his mum that he knew of this fantastic puppet company which did really brilliant animals and he was looking for the right project to work with them on and that’s how it started. When did you get involved in the project? I was a writer that the NT was interested in. I’d had plays on at the NT before and I’d actually worked with puppets before. When they asked me to do it, I’d heard of the book but I’d never read it. When I did read it I thought it was going to be quite tricky because the story is told in the first person by the horse. That’s not how it turned out on stage. If I’d kept it like it was in the book it would have almost been a sort of comedy/pantomime device. People would have thought ‘why are the horses talking in this?’ You can get away with it in a book but you can’t have a speaking horse on stage. So we knew from the start that the horse wasn't going to speak and it was going to be a character in the story instead. That was the first big challenge; regardless of it being a horse, turning it from a first into a third person story. Changing it into a third person story was a big chunk of the work I did on my own before we entered a great run of workshops where everybody was involved. These workshops included the Handspring Puppet Company, which was making puppets up as it went along. The company didn't know what Joey (War Horse) or the other horses were going to be before we started. It didn't know that you would be able to ride them or that they would have such a range of expressions. Was it always the plan to have the puppets so central to the production? Well, I remember the first horses that came in were just legs really. The next ones that came in had rucksack frames inside them and that's how the puppeteers inside were going to carry them. Everything was being improvised all at once. The projection, playing with shadow puppetry – we just had a ball. A bunch of adults playing for weeks on end, working out the best way to tell this story on stage. We were constantly learning how much could be conveyed by images and by puppetry. We’d talk about how the puppets could convey the story and ask Handspring whether we should change the script so the puppets could do more.

What did you think of the 2011 film version of ‘War Horse’, directed by Steven Spielberg? I thought it was less exciting than the stage version and it was a disadvantage having to use a real horse. When it's a puppet on stage, the horse only moves when you make it. It’s like the most brilliant actor who can control every muscle in their body and only move exactly what they want to – no human can do that. With a live horse you can’t really make them be as clear as you want them to be. Real horses can’t react, you can anthropomorphise them. You’re left with a horse doing horse things, which isn’t as interesting as a puppet that makes people’s jaws drop. With a real horse, most people just go ‘oh yeah, there’s a horse’. Your first book, ‘Armistice’, was released in 2010. How was it making the leap from writing for the stage to writing a novel? It’s very different. I’ve been trying to [write another book] since and it’s very, very difficult. As a playwright I’ve become used to not having to describe very much apart from characters and the sort of things they’re doing to each other. When you get to a novel you’ve got to be the scenic designer, the lighting designer, the sound designer, the director. All these things you don't have to do when you’re a playwright. It’s been a very difficult transition. How proud are you of ‘War Horse’ and how massive it has become? ‘War Horse’ is the biggest show, in almost every way, that I’ve ever been involved with in terms of the number of performances, how many different countries it has been to, how many are in the cast, etc. I’ve been to so many places to see it that I wouldn't otherwise have gone to. I went to Antwerp a couple of years ago because I thought that is the closest it’s been to an actual First World War battlefield. It was interesting going there to see the play. They did it in Flemish as well. There are all these people who’ve got jobs from this play as well - that’s another of the amazing things about ‘War Horse’.

“When it's a puppet on stage, the horse only moves when you make it. It’s like the most brilliant actor who can control every muscle in their body.”

SWEDISH-STYLE COFFEE SHOP TO OPEN ON WOOLTON ROAD A new Swedish-inspired coffee shop is set to open on Woolton Road. ‘Fika’ will serve traditional Scandinavian delicacies such as cinnamon rolls, Smørrebrød (open sandwiches) and chokladbullar (chocolate balls). Expected to open in early December, Fika is a concept in Scandinavian culture which means to have coffee and cake with friends. Anthony Grice, who is behind the new venue which will replace a former off licence near Mosspits Lane Primary School, says: “Our aim is to bring people together by taking time out of their busy day to stop what they're doing, forget about life for an hour, and spend some time with friends.”

NEW RESTAURANT THE FLORIST TO OPEN IN THE FORMER OLD BLIND SCHOOL A new restaurant is to open in the former Old Blind School pub on Hardman Street. Known as ‘The Florist’, guests are being promised a venue which will deliver an “uplifting experience” and wide-selection of cocktails and ales alongside a “vibrant food menu”. Chris Hill, CEO of The New World Trading Company, which is behind the new venue, says: “We are excited to be opening our second Florist in the former Old Blind School pub. “The Florist will be following in the success of our other venues, The Club House and Smugglers Cove.” The Florist will be opening its doors at 24 Hardman Street at the beginning of 2018.

GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW ROCOCO IN COMMERCIAL DISTRICT A popular independent Liverpool coffee house has been given the go-ahead to open its second venue. The new Rococo will be based on the ground floor of the Grade II*-listed Tower Building on Water Street. Rococo Coffee House Ltd, which has been running its Lord Street food and drink destination since 2008, will aim to “enhance the character” of the former recruitment agency office and create full and part-time job opportunities.

CUCINA DI VINCENZO Woolton Road, L16 As a frequent visitor to the land of art, architecture and aggressive hand gestures, I was delighted to hear of a new family-run Italian restaurant opening in South Liverpool. After I discovered this Woolton Road eatery was the brainchild of Vincent Margiotta, formerly of Duke Street’s Il Forno, I was even more desperate to pay a visit. When my partner and I finally did make it along on a busy Friday evening, we were both immediately impressed by the restaurant’s elegant décor which was all distressed wood and striking antiques. As you’d expect on a Friday night the atmosphere inside was buzzing, but Vincenzo’s was still managing to retain a sophisticated air which was propagated by an assured hosting performance from Vincent. Onto the food and to begin we opted to share the Antipasto Misto (£17). Any Italian restaurant worth its garlic should be able to knock up a decent version of this starter and much to my delight Vincenzo’s interpretation was far from just decent. This classic selection of cold meats, vegetables, cheese and bread was as

REVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS good, if not better, than any antipasti I’ve sampled on my travels across the ‘Boot’. If I were forced to pick a highlight of the generously sized platter it would have to be the tapenade; the smooth olive, capers and olive oil paste was divine when spread across a tiny snailshaped piece of crusty bread. We paired our first course with a couple of glasses of Sant’Elisa Friuli Pinot Grigio (£18.50), which complemented the salami, prosciutto and peppers perfectly. Onto the mains and I doubt Oz Clarke would have matched my fabulous Tagliata Manzo (£19) with our choice of plonk, but never mind. The succulent sliced sirloin steak - nestled beneath a bed of rocket and topped with Parmesan cheese and cherry tomatoes was a joy to behold. Expertly seasoned, the melt in the mouth meat soaked up plenty of the lipsmackingly good balsamic reduction. Likewise my date adored her orecchiette pasta with broccoli, Italian sausage and chilli (£10), noting the

expertly curated blend of textures and aromatic chopped pork. For afters there was a concise selection of Italian classics to choose from. Panna cotta for myself and tiramisu for my dining partner, both puddings were a more than reasonable £6 each. These two staples of Italian cuisine were again both absolute triumphs. Served in a quaint vintage teacup, my panna cotta was rich, creamy and indulgent, everything you could possibly want from this simple yet sophisticated dessert. Meanwhile my partner was equally as enamoured with her tiramisu, admitting she found it more luscious, flavorsome and moreish than the one we get from Aldi. And she really likes that one. Nine months ago I said new Liverpool restaurants would have a tough job dislodging Verdant as the city’s top eatery but Cucina di Vincenzo may well have done just that. Not just a brilliant Italian, this is a brilliant restaurant full stop.

Boudoir Boutique began trading in 2008 from a small unit on the outside of Cavern Walks. Due to popularity in 2010 it expanded to a 1,500 sq ft shop on the upper floor of the designer shopping centre. “We specialise in womenswear, accessories, homeware and lifestyle, says Belinda Shaw, store manager. “We pride ourselves on bringing new and exciting boutique labels to the city of Liverpool. “My top style tip for the new season is don’t follow the trends. Wear what makes you feel good and most importantly wear it with confidence!

Mode Mwah was set up by Karen Beardmore in 2010. Karen has a degree in fashion and textiles and, according to her website, wanted to create strong and innovative designs that offer “a refined sense of sophisticated luxury. “Whether classically styled or exaggerated, the designs rely on such basic design principles as proportion, balance, colour and texture, and they conform to the style of the Mode Mwah label, she says. Each outfit is individually cut and fitted to suit a particular style.

Owner Jackie Wynn opened ROC in 2008 and the studio is approaching its 10-year anniversary. “We have a varied range of clients so we don't specialise in any one particular product, explains Jackie. “All of our designs are bespoke and based on our clients’ needs. “More often than not clients will bring their own ideas to the table. We do, however, get a lot of bridal orders. Jackie says her top style tip for the party season would be to embrace a classic look. “Keep it elegant yet stylish, she says. “Red is the new black this season so the little red dress is a must.
