EDITOR’S LETTER Liverpool and London have plenty in common; from iconic waterfronts to striking historic architecture and thriving cultural scenes. But one thing that certainly sets the two apart is the price of their homes. In our latest Hot Topic we weigh up the property markets here in Liverpool and in the capital to compare how far your cash could stretch. And as best-selling author Philip Pullman, the man behind the popular ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy and its new ‘Book of Dust’ follow-up, prepares to appear at this year’s Liverpool Literary Festival, he catches up with Your Move for a quick chat. Plus, with December looming and Liverpool city centre fully illuminated for Christmas, we’ve called on some of the city’s top craft experts to show you how to make your own delightful DIY decorations.

IN MY LIVERPOOL

WITH MERSEYSIDE REGULARLY RANKING HIGHLY AS ONE OF THE TOP PLACES BOTH TO VISIT AND TO SET UP HOME YOUR MOVE TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR AREAS TO SNAP UP PROPERTY

There are few places in the UK with a mix of properties and boroughs as eclectic as that of the Liverpool City Region. From the leafy suburbs of Allerton and Woolton and Sefton’s coastal towns, to the urban cool of the Baltic Triangle and the chic city living of the docks; never has the overused cliché of ‘there’s something for everyone’ been so applicable. It’s perhaps for this reason that so many of the 50,000 students who flock to Liverpool each year stay here long after their studies, as

the city allows them to relocate to suit their lifestyles without ever straying far beyond its boundaries. Student developments are sprouting up left, right and centre while plush apartments and characterful charm offer plenty of choice for young professionals and, when the time comes to settle down and have a family, there are countless areas that will suit perfectly. In fact, so varied is the choice on offer in the Liverpool City Region that it can be hard

to know where to start looking. Luckily, we’ve enlisted the help of one of Liverpool’s most well-known estate agents to give us some guidance. Abode Group has offices in both Allerton and Crosby and its team helps buyers, sellers and renters make their next move all over the area. Crosby branch manager Mike Lynch and Allerton branch manager Joe Pollard offer some advice on where to set up home and find a property to suit your lifestyle.

BEST FOR... YOUNG COUPLES AND PROFESSIONALS

WATERLOO With an abundance of properties with a huge range of house prices, the coastal town of Waterloo is a firm favourite for young professionals and couples looking for their first home, explains Mike. “Waterloo is a fantastic place to live for young professionals,” he says. “With a choice of highly rated restaurants, bars and eateries to choose from and excellent transport links into town, L22 is an excellent place to live for those looking for a good time.” One highlight of Abode’s Waterloo stock is this four-bedroom midterrace on Albert Road, on the market for offers over £185,000. The modern and spacious home features neutral décor throughout and a great sized contemporary kitchen/dining room.

BEST FOR... FAMILIES

CROSBY Just a short drive up the road from Waterloo is the seaside town of Crosby. Home to a wide range of restaurants and shops, the pretty suburb is the ideal location for families looking for a friendly, amenity-packed location. “Crosby is a real family orientated suburb,” says Mike. “With a choice of outstanding primary and secondary schools in the area as well as Antony Gormley’s Another Place, a number of parks and a recently revamped leisure centre, L23 provides the perfect family life.” Mike has picked out this three-bedroom home on Victoria Road West which Abode is marketing at £325,000. The large family home comprises an entrance porch, hallway, two spacious reception rooms, downstairs WC, conservatory and open plan kitchen/dining room all to the ground floor. To the first floor there are three double bedrooms, a family bathroom and separate WC.

BEST FOR... MATURE FAMILIES

WOOLTON It’s long been one of the most popular areas in Liverpool and a quick tour of this picturesque village shows why. “Woolton Village is home to a fantastic mixture of traditional and 1970s build properties,” says Joe. “Situated within close proximity to secondary schools, the location offers a true village feel with local parishes and Liverpudlian history. In the centre of the village you’ll find traditional terraced properties leading onto larger detached properties where people aspire to upsize. It is certainly considered a prestigious area.” Abode is currently marketing this three-bedroom mid-terrace cottage on Castle Street in Woolton for offers over £290,000. This characterful property has been renovated throughout to now include an entrance hall, lounge, dining room which opens onto an outstanding kitchen, a modern ground floor bathroom and access to the cellar.

BEST FOR... NEXT STEPPERS

AIGBURTH Aigburth is a favourite among many demographics but with a host of independent bars and eateries rivalling the city centre, and a wide range of properties it’s particularly attractive to young professionals looking to move out of the city. “Aigburth has transport links galore,” says Joe. “There are two stations and numerous bus routes into town and across the city as well as plenty of restaurants and shops.” And, once kids come knocking there’s plenty on offer in Aigburth to suit family life. “The area has some of the best junior schools around,” says Joe. “Plus there are lots of green spaces such as Sefton Park which regularly hosts events and shows”. Joe has chosen this four-bedroom character terrace on Horringford Road which is on the market for offers over £330,000.

NEWS EARLY SPONSORS SIGN UP TO SUPPORT THE NWPAs Early sponsors have already snapped up new awards opportunities for next year’s prestigious NWPAs.

This year’s NWPAs was a glamorous celebration

Following the success of last month’s spectacular 2017 celebration, which recognised a year of success in the North West’s commercial and residential property sectors, it was revealed that two new accolades would be presented in 2018. The Innovation Award will be open to all property related firms as it recognises those which are working to keep up with the fastpaced changes in the industry; and the Community Award, also open to entries from all property firms, will celebrate those which are giving something back to the communities they work within. With preparations already underway for next year’s ceremony, set to be held on 11 October, Redwing Living has signed up to sponsor the inaugural Innovation Award and BMD Law is putting its name to the Community Award.

Meanwhile Redrow North West and Lancashire will support the Best Law Firm category, and the return of Furnish That Room to sponsor the drinks reception at the lavish event has also been confirmed. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which organises the NWPAs, says: “The 2017 NWPAs was a fantastic night of celebration and next year’s event is already shaping up to be just as successful. “North West property firms are having to adapt to ongoing changes in the industry so it’s important that the NWPAs continues to evolve too. We’re thrilled to be introducing new awards in 2018 and it’s great that they’ve already been so well received. “It’s never too early to get involved in the NWPAs and we still have plenty of other exciting opportunities lined up.” For more information on the opportunities available at The NWPAs 2018 and how you can enter, call 0151 709 3871.

MAYOR VISITS ‘TRULY INSPIRATIONAL’ REFURBISHED ‘HOMES FOR ’ PROPERTY The Mayor of Liverpool has hailed the first refurbished house in the newest phase of the city’s Homes for £1 scheme as “truly inspirational”. Mayor Joe Anderson visited the property, which was in a dilapidated state until couple Sam and Rachael Kamau took the keys a year ago having purchased it through the initiative. Mother of two, Rachael recalls: “It was the worst house I’d ever seen. Everything that you can think of needed doing bar replacing the bricks on the outside. “I know most people would have walked away but what we saw, beyond the poor condition, was the space. When we heard about the £1 home scheme, we had two growing girls who’d always had to share a bedroom and whatever needed to be done paled into insignificance to

the space.” Rachael and Sam, who now live in the transformed property, are qualified nurses and moved to Liverpool from Kenya 16 years ago but had previously been unable to get on the property ladder. Mayor Anderson says: “What Rachel and Sam have done is truly inspirational. They’ve proved that with a bit of love and determination a once neglected house can be transformed into a dream home. “I’m delighted we’ve got lots more properties lined up for other families and we won’t be stopping there. Next month we’ll be launching a new housing company because we’ve got thousands of properties which can be brought back to life and we’re doing that because the demand is there.”

NEWS LIVERPOOL HOMEBUYERS ‘UNAWARE’ OF HOME-SELLING HELP INITIATIVES Part exchange can help buyers at Countryside’s Belgravia scheme

Half of Liverpool’s homeowners are unaware of the help available when it comes to selling their existing properties, according to Countryside. In a survey conducted by the housebuilder, 50% of respondents didn’t know that initiatives such as part exchange schemes could assist them in switching their current home for a new-build. Countryside is operating a part exchange option at its Belgravia site in Gateacre, enabling buyers to ‘trade in’ their existing property for a home at the site with benefits such as eliminating the need for estate agent fees and alleviating the worry of selling a house on the open market. Martina Collins, the developer’s regional sales and marketing director, says: “It’s natural for families to outgrow their current home and selling a property can be an extremely stressful experience, especially for families who have young children and are eager to relocate to a larger home. “Part exchange has been designed to offer a helping hand to these families. It allows buyers to secure a sale for their existing property, at market value, and they could even be moved into their new home in just a matter of weeks.” For more information about Countryside’s Belgravia scheme, call 0151 909 5942.

LANDLORDS URGED TO ACT AHEAD OF NEW ENERGY EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS

CALL TO SCRAP STAMP DUTY IN CHANCELLOR’S AUTUMN BUDGET

Liverpool landlords are being urged to upgrade their properties with changes to energy efficiency regulations less than six months away. From April 2018, property owners will no longer be allowed to privately let homes without a minimum energy efficiency rating of ‘E’. According to Mike Feely, energy efficiency expert at E.ON, there are several ways landlords can enhance their properties’ energy-saving credentials, such as focusing on insulation and filling cavity walls, which are likely to feature in homes built before or around 1920; fitting double glazed windows or secondary glazing to stop a property losing up to 10% of its heat; and considering long-term upgrades that will stop heat escaping through doors, letterboxes, windows and keyholes. Renewable technologies such as solar panels with an athome battery to store electricity for use even when the sun goes down can also be considered, although Mike says: “Be aware these will contribute to your rating only if they’re helping to heat the house, rather than providing electricity for other uses.” He adds: “Our research shows there may actually be a double benefit in improving the energy efficiency of a property – tenants benefit from lower energy bills and more comfortable homes while landlords already anticipate their properties will become more desirable and could even command higher rents.” For more information contact E.ON’s landlord team on 0330 400 1122.

Helen Griffin-Booth from sales, lettings and investment agency Bluerow Homes

Scrapping Stamp Duty in the Autumn Budget would help more first-time buyers onto the property market according to a Liverpool agent. Ahead of the Autumn Budget announcement on 22 November, Bluerow Homes’ director Helen Griffin-Booth is calling on Chancellor Philip Hammond to get rid of the tax. Homebuyers in England must pay Stamp Duty on residential properties costing more than £125,000, and the purchase of the average home in the country – worth £226,000 – would incur a Stamp Duty bill of £2,000. Helen says: “The number of homeowners under the age of 45 in England has dropped dramatically since 2010. Many young people feel locked out of the housing market due to sky-high costs,

with Stamp Duty being a key contributor to this. Stamp Duty Land Tax can add thousands on to the cost of buying a home and makes many people reluctant to move. “Scrapping or even going some way to reduce Stamp Duty would help aspiring first-time buyers address one of the biggest obstacles to entering the market – raising a deposit.” Helen goes on to say that the levy also has a knock-on effect in the wider housing market as growing families may also be prevented from moving up the ladder due to the costs. She adds: “Although Stamp Duty is a cash cow for the government, netting almost £12 billion in the 2016/17 tax year, I hope the government sees this as an opportunity to address not only the housing crisis but the wider economy in general.”

Councillors Phil Davies and George Davies were given a tour of Upton Pines

PROGRESSING UPTON PINES DEVELOPMENT WILL ‘HELP WIRRAL ACHIEVE HOUSING PLEDGE’ Wirral’s new Upton Pines housing development has the “makings of a vibrant new community” according to the borough council’s leader. Councillor Phil Davies visited Stewart Milne Homes’ project along with Wirral Borough Council’s Cllr George Davies, the cabinet member for housing and community safety, for a tour highlighting the progress of the scheme. A total of 147 two to five-bedroom houses and 33 one to two-bedroom apartments are currently being developed at the site, which is half a mile from Upton Village, with 71 homes completed so far. Construction on the scheme got underway in 2016 and more than 62% of the homes are said to have been sold so far, with more than 80% of buyers securing the properties with support from the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. Cllr Phil Davies says: "We really enjoyed our visit to Upton Pines, it was great to find out more about

DONATIONS FLOOD IN FOR CHRISTMAS PYJAMA APPEAL Generous donations of children’s pyjamas have been flooding in at the city centre offices of a Liverpool housing association. Regenda Homes is acting as a drop-off point for the city’s Pyjama Party Liverpool charity during the run up to the festive season. The charity, which was set up by mother and daughter duo Karen and Ash Downing, collects and distributes new pyjamas to homeless children across the city. Kevin Short, communities team leader at Regenda Homes, says: “It has been great to see so

the new houses that are being built here by Stewart Milne Homes. "Upton Pines has the makings of a vibrant new community and it is through partnerships such as this with property developers that we will achieve our pledge to provide quality, additional housing across Wirral." Steve Daintith, land director at Stewart Milne Homes, adds: “We always welcome the opportunity to showcase the quality of our developments and we’re pleased that Cllr Phil Davies has offered his support to the work we are doing at Upton Pines. “We are now more than half way through construction at Upton Pines and the development is proving extremely popular with home buyers with most of our homes available already sold.” For more information about Upton Pines call 0845 900 3633.

Stellar start for ambitious new property management firm A fledgling Liverpool property management company is celebrating a successful first two months in business. LetAgreed, which launched in September, offers full, part and let only property management as well as homes for rent. Kevin Carrol, property manager for LetAgreed, has reported a strong opening couple of months for the firm and is encouraged by the initial response from customers. He believes the experience of the company’s staff in the property management sector will be a big help moving forward, and says: "We are Liverpool landlords ourselves. We have worked in property management for a number of years, including at a Cheshire-based family-run property firm. “We have big ambitions but we know we are competing with some amazing local companies which are very well established here in Liverpool. “However, the decision always resides with the landlord so we just have to make sure our message reaches as many as possible. “We look forward to talking to more and more landlords from all over the city." For more information contact LetAgreed on 0151 329 0404.

A

s the well-known Samuel Johnson saying goes, “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford”. When it comes to the latest food, fashion and just about any other trend you can think of, nine times out 10 you’ll find the capital at the epicentre. However, according to figures released in July, the number of people leaving the city has reached a five-year high, with more now waving goodbye to the Big Smoke than moving there. Soaring property prices have been blamed for the

mini-exodus, and whilst most are heading to the likes of Cambridge and Canterbury, many have realised it’s not quite so grim up North. Any Londoners relocating to Liverpool would be forgiven for thinking they haven’t left thanks to our collection of exquisite listed buildings and street names such as Pall Mall, Whitechapel and Covent Garden to name but a few. We’ve compared three pairs of properties across a trio of distinct locations in both cities to give you an idea of what you can get for your hand-earned cash.

LIVERPOOL LARK LANE Whilst other parts of Liverpool may be increasingly considered as the city’s trendiest district none can match the rustic cool and laidback charm of Lark Lane. A 10-minute stroll around leafy Sefton Park from the quaint shops and trendy bars of ‘the Lane’ is a plush two-bedroom duplex apartment on Ullet Road. Housed on the ground floor of a converted Grade II-listed mansion, it’ll set you back £200,000.

During the mid 1990s, Primrose Hill in North London was the place to be. Located next to the forever-cool Camden Town, its stucco-fronted houses and Victorian terraces were home to likes of Noel Gallagher, Jude Law and Kate Moss. Whilst the area might have lost some of its once mischievous edge, it remains one of the most fashionable London postcodes with a plethora of trendy independent shops, hipster pubs and exclusive restaurants. A particularly magnificent four-bedroom terraced house on Chalcot Road in the heart of the district will set you back a cool £3,950,000. A short walk from Primrose Hill itself - a 213ft mound in Regent's Park - this exquisite family home is set over five floors and boasts a stylish double reception room with doors leading to a spectacular terrace perfect for entertaining. Whilst Liverpool’s Mossley Hill might not be

PRIMROSE HILL able to compete with the exalted former residents of its semi-namesake in the capital (Kim Cattrall and Freddie Mercury aside) it can confidently match the quality of its housing stock. A stunning five-bedroom detached home on the opulent Carnatic Road, a stone’s throw from Sefton Park, is on the market for offers over £1,00,000. Clever use of glazing and a range of functional design features have been combined to create a truly unique property which was shortlisted for a Northern Design Award. The striking full height entrance hall creates a breathtaking centrepiece to this family residence which includes an ultra modern fitted kitchen, swanky en suite shower room off the master bedroom and a beautiful lounge with bi-folding doors leading out onto a substantial rear garden.

LONDON SHOW-STOPPING

Liverpool and London are the proud owners of two of the UK’s most instantly recognisable skylines. As you’d expect, there’s a premium to pay for a home overlooking the Royal Liver Building or The Shard. For example, a three-bedroom luxurious apartment here in Liverpool with views of Albert Dock, Mann Island and the River

Mersey will cost you £1,800 pcm. For this you’ll get three double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a generously sized balcony on which to enjoy your magnificent views. Meanwhile in the capital a three-bed lavish apartment nestled on the side of the River Thames with equally awe-inspiring views of the Palace of Westminster will leave you needing to find £7,800 pcm.

Cargo Building, Liverpool

Extravagant facilities at The Corniche on Albert Embankment include a pool, spa, ‘vitality room’, ‘Skyline Club Lounge’ and a 24-hour Harrods concierge service. Residents can also enjoy five star extras at the neigbouring Dumont building including ten-pin bowling, a private cinema, billiards room and an observatory.

TALENT IN THE CITY

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You’re coming to the Liverpool Literary Festival to talk about ‘La Belle Sauvage’. Do you get many opportunities like this to gather with fans of your work, and what can they expect? Well I’ve been doing a lot of publicity with the release of the book, and also the release of ‘Daemon Voices – Essays on Storytelling’ but normally I try and remain a hermit because I’m quite busy and it’s the only way you can get long enough to work on a book. What kind of impact did the anticipation from fans of ‘His Dark Materials’ and revisiting something so well-loved have on your writing experience with ‘La Belle Sauvage’? I’d been aware that a lot of people were waiting for this book because people write to me. It’s been 17 years and I’ve been doing other things. I knew there would be a certain amount of anticipation for them but I’m pleased they seem to like it, that’s the main thing. I don’t think of the readers [when writing], I think of the story. I do what serves the story best and if the book turns out to be the sort of book that children would like then fine, but if it turns out to be a book that probably doesn’t have younger readers in mind then that’s fine as well. Is the anticipation and your awareness of it heightened now because of the likes of social media? It’s very different, yes. [Social media] sort of sprung into existence after the final book of the ‘His Dark Materials’ was published. Twitter didn’t exist, Facebook didn’t exist and the whole thing has changed. I get much more interest on Twitter than I do in actual letters now. Do you feel the level of access people have to information and various mediums of entertainment at all times has changed your job as an author? No I don’t think so because I write in the same way; I write novels which are printed in books on paper with ink and bound in single volumes and sold in bookshops – that hasn’t changed. But I was reading, on Twitter as it happens, a post from the author Malorie Blackman who has pointed out that people now come up to her and say ‘we read your books on PDF’, meaning they downloaded them from a pirate site and consequently didn’t pay for them. That’s a very bad thing and it’s not going to do the ecology, if I can put it like that, of publishing and bookselling any good at all.

“If you saw ‘The Golden Compass’ film first you’d never be able to get Nicole Kidman out of your mind when you’re reading about Mrs Coulter but I don’t mind that actually.” Do you think it’ll affect the quality of literature that comes to the fore? I hope not because I hope people who always want to tell stories and read stories will, and the amount of talent in the world doesn’t suddenly disappear because we’ve got a new bit of technology. I suppose when the cinema came in they said it’d be the death of the theatre and it wasn’t, when radio and television came in they said it’d be the death of the cinema and it wasn’t, and when box sets and everything else came in they said it’d be the death of ordinary television and it hasn’t been so these things continue to survive. I’m sure books and reading will still survive. ‘The Book of Dust’ starts when the ‘His Dark Materials’ character Lyra is a baby and will also visit her later life. Did you always have a clear vision of that character’s past and future when you created her? I was always intrigued to find out how it was that she ended up at Jordan College. I also wanted to sew those slow growing seeds that would come to flower 10 years earlier and 10 years later when Lyra is 20 years old. The second book [in ‘The Book of Dust’] will visit Lyra as a 20-year-old. Although regarded as children’s books, your works are loved by children and adults alike. What’s the secret to telling stories that excite such a broad audience? Several years ago when I was a school teacher I used to put on plays. That mixed audience mixed in age I mean - was a very good one and I enjoyed making all of them laugh and want to know what was going to happen next or feel sad or whatever. I was just lucky to find that same audience for books. I think the audience for ‘La Belle Sauvage’ is probably a little older naturally. I’m not going to say what age it’s for because it’s for anyone who wants to read it and if they’re too young they can just put it down and come back to it later, but I think the natural audience that the book probably seems to expect is not a very young one.

Your books have been adapted for the stage, film and television, with work on a BBC adaptation underway. How do you feel about others turning your work into something new, and how involved do you get? I’m lightly involved, not very involved because I know there’s not much time or much room for the writer of the original story in the middle of an adaptation that’s got its own rules, its own ways of doing things and its own ways of telling things. The author of the original book isn’t always helpful, hanging about and making suggestions which nobody has the time for. The other thing is that the book is still there. If there was a rule that, say, every time an adaptation is made of a novel all the copies of the novel must be withdrawn and burned then I’d feel very different about it. But you must have your own picture of the characters that you’re creating? Yes of course, you’re right. The actor who takes the part of a character I’ve written about has a big part in the way people respond to it if they’ve seen the film first. If you saw ‘The Golden Compass’ film first you’d never be able to get Nicole Kidman out of your mind when you’re reading about Mrs Coulter but I don’t mind that actually, I’m quite happy with that! Were there any books and authors that were most inspirational to you when you started writing? Oh yes, Alan Garner. He showed you could write books with young protagonists in them that had very difficult, painful, complex and grown-up concerns. He continues to be a great model, a great inspiration to me. You’ve received prestigious accolades as well as book popularity and influential status, but what do you consider your greatest achievement as an author so far? ‘Clockwork’ is a short book, a fairy tale, but I’m very pleased with it because it seems to me to have a perfect shape and that’s quite difficult to get right. That’s the book I’m proudest of, I think. It’s very nice, very pleasing to get awards and that sort of thing but it doesn’t change the task at all. It doesn’t change the nature of the work – it’s still you and the piece of paper and a pen, silence and a table and a chair and that’s all you need really. That’s what it’ll always remain, that’s the important part of it. I know plenty of writers who deserve accolades and have never got them.

NEW HOPE STREET BAR A new bar is opening in the city’s Grade II-listed Masonic Building on 17 November. Tom Birch-Mantova and his wife Rachel are behind the Masonic Bar, and have transformed the Masonic Lodge’s former entrance lobby into an “opulent lounge”. The venue promises wines, beers and spirits from around the world as well as a cocktail menu. A “high-end bottle bar” is also in the pipeline for a further bar space on a lower floor of the building.

PUB IN RUNNING FOR NATIONAL TITLE A Liverpool City Region pub has been named one of the country’s top four in CAMRA’s Pub of the Year awards. The Cricketers in St Helens won the regional Pub of the Year title in 2015 and 2016 but is this year in the running to win the national accolade. Pubs are selected by CAMRA volunteers and judged on atmosphere, décor, welcome service, community focus and beer quality. The Cricketers will be presented with an award for its achievement on 18 November, before going up against three other finalists for National Pub of the Year in February 2018. Wigan Central in Wigan, Lowestoft’s Stanford Arms and Kidderminster’s Weavers Real Ale House are also in the top four.

GIN TASTING TO LAUNCH NEW EVENTS A series of Tuesday tasting events will get underway this month at Cains Brewery Village’s Dockleaf. Turncoat Gin will be the first to provide tastings and a talk about produce on 21 November as part of The Greenhouse Sessions. The venue is also lining up other guest curators to showcase everything from wine and beer to hot sauce and cheese during future sessions. The inaugural event also comes as Dockleaf launches a new cocktail menu in November.

DOWN THE HATCH

Duke Street, L1

The basement of former nightclub Le Bateau has been through various food and drink guises since its once grungy dancefloor was transformed into a sophisticated dining space. With minimal, ground level signage to make its presence known from the outside though, the venue has always seemed to me to have somewhat of a blinkand-you’ll-miss-it appearance in an area of the city where an eclectic selection of bars and eateries are vibrantly standing out. So does the site’s current venture - vegetarian and vegan junk food joint Down the Hatch – have a menu that can shout loud enough to attract Liverpool’s enthusiastic foodie population? Well when my colleague and I visited on a grim weathered Wednesday evening it seemed like word of the eatery had certainly gotten around. The standard menu at Down the Hatch is vegetarian, and a vegan menu was also offered outlining a similar selection that steers clear of dairy ingredients and honey. We were faced with dishes which sounded hearty and indulgent as the options were broken up into ‘small junk’, ‘big junk’ and ‘home cooked (like ya ma does)’ sections. With bumper burgers, macaroni cheese and a BBQ pulled pork-like option made with jack fruit, it was a meatfree approach to the hefty American-style dishes we’ve come to expect in popular haunts like Almost Famous and Slim’s Pork

REVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG Chop Express. My dining partner, who has previously dabbled in veganism, and I, a meateater, were drawn to the Cauliflower Five Ways platter (£8) on the ‘small junk’ menu and opted to share it as a starter. With variations of the vegetable cooked in chipotle and honey, buffalo style, cheese sauce, garlic butter and beer battered, and served alongside slaw and salsa, the sizeable dish set the tone for an evening of delicious dishes that were mammoth in their portions. Cauliflower has seemingly grown as a trendy and versatile fixture on many of the city’s menus in recent times and we were eager to try each of Down the Hatch’s variations. All five came with their own distinctive, enjoyable taste but my guest and I crowned the flavoursome buffalo sauce coating as the highlight. For my main I picked the Michaelangelo (£8) - a refried blackbean patty with grilled mature cheddar. Like all of the menu’s ‘bun junk’ options it was served alongside slaw and fries, and I upgraded to the sweet potato variety for an additional 50p. My fellow diner was keen to try Down the Hatch’s version of the meat substitute seitan but wanted to steer clear of bread. The Zinger Strips ‘N’ Chips (£8) – spicy crispy coated seitan strips served with fries and

‘Howl at the Moon’ hot sauce salsa – fitted the bill. As the choices were placed on our table alongside the remains of our cauliflower platter, the full scale of our oversized order became apparent. Perhaps coupling ‘big junk’ and ‘bun junk’ options with anything else was ambitious but the menu made it sound irresistible! Fries didn’t just sit next to my burger – they were also underneath it as the generous portion filled the plastic basket my food was served in. Meanwhile the burger itself, which with its dark textured patty and accompaniment of cheese didn’t look too dissimilar from a meat version, was dense but delightful. The refried beans gave a softness and a taste unlike any beanbased burger I’d tried before. Meanwhile the seitan strips were hailed as the “best seitan I’ve had” by my guest. Enough said! The portion sizes, coupled with our eyes being bigger than our bellies, defeated us during our visit to Down the Hatch but we were, nonetheless, happy with our feast. The textures and flavours were certainly enough to satisfy carnivores and herbivores alike and, as a server of junk food, the restaurant was as good as any that’s cooking up meat. Plus the prices, particularly for the scale of the dishes, offered excellent value.

WORDS BY CHRISTINE TONER

DIY

GET THE HOMEMADE TOUCH THIS CHRISTMAS WITH OUR CREATIVE EXPERTS It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it doesn’t have to be the most expensive. Here at Your Move we’ve scoured the city and called on our favourite creatives to share their tips and tricks for turning your home into a winter wonderland this Christmas.

TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS WREATH BY SAM COOK OF SUGARSTEALERS FLORISTS YOU WILL NEED • • • • •

10-inch wire wreath frame One reel wire Bag of sphagnum moss 1.25mm florist wire Selection of pine cones

• Selection of evergreen foliage • Dried orange slices and other festive decorations • One metre of festive ribbon

METHOD Moss the wreath frame by rolling the sphagnum moss into cylinders and placing onto the ring. Using the reel wire, bind the wire around the moss and the frame working all the way round the design. Wire all the materials: Bend the wire in half and using only one end wrap this around the stem three times, then bring the second wire down to form a wire stem. Place the centre of the wire at the base of the pine cone and intertwine the wire through the open end of the pine cone, meeting the two wires, and twist the wires together. Add the foliage to the ring by placing the two wires at an angle (not to come out at the base on the side) and bend the foliage back into place, working around the ring till the moss is covered. You will need approximately 50 stems of foliage. To decorate the wreath add the pine cones and the decorative items using the same method as the foliage. Place these on top of the foliage to stand proud of the design. Make a bow by using around 1m of ribbon, folding it in half and pinching in the middle. Using a figure of eight bring one side of the ribbon to the center and pinch, before using the same technique to bring the second side to the centre and pinch. Using one wire in half wrap around the centre of the ribbon and twist the wire tight to secure the bow. Place this into the design to finish. 48 Your Move

FESTIVE DECORATIONS

DECORATIVE DOOR BOW

BY NATALIE CAMPBELL OWNER OF FLORIST VENUE DECORATING AND PARTY ACCESSORY FIRM BOWS & ROSES

CHRISTMAS CENTREPIECE BY NINA MITCHELL OF NINA’S FLOWERS YOU WILL NEED • • • • •

Scissors Clippers Candle spikes Oasis pins Dish

• Green floral wet oasis brick • Super glue or oasis fix • Flowers and foliage • Candles

Nina will be among the stallholders at the Winter Arts Market on Saturday 2 December at Liverpool Cathedral.

METHOD Glue the oasis pins onto the dish Drop the oasis brick onto the water, let it gradually sink to the bottom. DO NOT push it under the water, as this will create air locks. Place the oasis brick onto the oasis pins on the dish. Place candles into the candle spikes and position on the oasis. Cut the stems at an angle to allow them to slide easily into the oasis. This also helps the flowers to get more water into the stem. Cover the oasis brick with foliage first, then add in flowers and decoration. YOU WILL NEED • One roll of organza fabric • A pair of scissors • String METHOD Measure the length and the width of your door. Cut a piece of the organza so it is three times the length of your door. Wrap the organza around the door so the ends come over the top and under the base. Cross the ribbons of organza in the middle of the door (internally) and feed through the sides back to the front. Cross the ribbons over the front of the door to create a cross shape and feedback through the sides of the door Tie in a knot at the back to secure the organza. Fan out the organza to widen the cross. Cut off a good size of organza and make a bow.

Tie the middle of the cross with a piece string to secure it and tie on the bow. TOP TIP The key to making a beautiful bow is keeping all your loops the same size. Make sure the first loop is the size you want and use this as your pattern for other loops.

KIDS CRAFT: MINI HATS

REBECCA PENNINGTON OF OVIS YARNS SHARES HER QUICK AND FUN CRAFT THE LITTLE ONES CAN HELP WITH “Want a quick knitted decoration that looks like it took hours?” says Rebecca. “Then these mini hats are for you! Especially great for beginners or children, the hats can be made with the following steps: “Cast on 30 stitches and knit until you get a rectangle that measures 6cm high. Cut your yarn, leaving a tail of 20cm and thread through the stitches on your needle, then slip the needle out. Pull all the stitches tight and then fold the rectangle in half (right side together) and sew up the side – turn it inside out, and you have a mini hat! “Attach a mini pom pom to the top and you’re done.”

SEASONAL STYLE

CLARE FERNANDEZ-HART OF LIVERPOOL-BASED FAMILY-RUN INTERIORS BUSINESS PAINTED OLIVE SHARES HER TIPS ON ADDING A TRENDY FESTIVE TOUCH TO YOUR HOME “Foliage is king this year,” says Clare. “Invite nature inside when you decorate your home this Christmas by introducing a botanical mix of eucalyptus and holly accented with woodland creatures and as many twinkling fairy lights as you can get your hands on. “Combine this season’s nomadic patterns with trendy rustic chic furniture and a folk inspired palette of berry red, hague blue and frosty white to evoke whimsical childhood memories of Narnia. “The spirit of Christmas should be felt in every room, and there is no better way to achieve this than by adding ‘that Christmas smell’ with some cinnamon scented candles to entice your senses and rouse seasonal joy all around your home. “Welcome guests into your home using feel good festive signs and slogans on reclaimed timber, epitomising rustic seasonal charm. The ideal finishing touch, they provide a fun talking point when it comes to decorating your home this Christmas.” Your Move 49
