EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to the final issue of Your Move for 2017 – it’s filled to the brim with festive spirit! With just days to go until the main event we bring you handy tips to make sure your home is ready for hosting this year’s big dinner, to our pick of unique Liverpool ways to enjoy the Christmas period. And as the season is a time for giving, we shine the spotlight on some of the campaigners who have been helping to make a huge difference for those who need it most around the city. If that’s not enough we’ve also highlighted the top events and entertainment over the coming weeks, and our reviewer heads to an unusual Liverpool bar to try out the menu of winter tipples. Here at Your Move HQ, we’d also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers and supporters a very happy Christmas and a wonderful new year. See you in 2018!

NEWS EVENT BOOSTS EARLY SALES SUCCESS FOR CLOCK TOWER DRIVE Buyers have moved “more quickly than expected” to secure homes at Riverside Home Ownership’s Clock Tower Drive scheme. Almost half of the affordable properties available have now been reserved offplan, months ahead of the first scheduled build completions. The early sales success, which has seen 17 of the 37 Shared Ownership houses being snapped up, is said to have been boosted by a preview event which was held earlier this month. During the event buyers who had registered their interest in the development, which is being built on the Rice Lane site of the former Walton

Hospital, were given an opportunity to view sample property types, kitchen styles and finishes. The Riverside Home Ownership team was also on hand to answer questions. Rachael Pauls, Riverside’s sales negotiator, says: “Our homes at Clock Tower Drive are selling even more quickly than expected. “It’s a really well connected location and we’re including great fixtures and finishes as standard, so they’ve proven ideal for first-time buyers looking to get onto the property ladder.” The first build completions are due in February 2018. For more information call 0345 112 8800.
Staff at Keppie Massie donned their red and blue suits once again to take part in the 2017 Liverpool Santa Dash. Runners from the city property agent joined in the annual event to boost funds for The Alzheimer’s Society, and have raised £625 with donations still being collected. Phil Winkles, Racheal Cooley, Thomas McDonald and Abbie Beach were this year’s participants in the festive fun run. Meanwhile, fellow Keppie Massie staff continued their tradition of handing out packets of energy fuelling jelly beans to runners as they passed the firm’s office along the route. Debra Beach, branch manager at Keppie Massie, says: “We were very pleased to again take part in such an iconic event which brings the city together to support good causes in such a positive way. Housebuilder donates Christmas trees to Wirral hospitals Stewart Milne Homes has been spreading festive cheer at Wirral hospitals by donating Christmas trees.
Staff from the hospital and Stewart Milne Homes switch the lights on at Arrowe Park
The 22ft and 18ft trees are being displayed in the main entrances of Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge. It’s the second year that Stewart Milne Homes has provided the decorative trees for the hospitals, and the firm hopes to build on the donations as part of a longer relationship with Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. David Allison, chief executive of Wirral University Teaching Hospital, says: “Spending any amount of time at hospital during the festive season can be tough and we try wherever we can to make the experience as easy as possible. Thousands of people will pass through our hospital doors this Christmas and our trees will be the first thing they will see.
“This kind donation from Stewart Milne Homes for yet another year will help to spread some festive cheer among the patients, their families and our staff who will be working around the clock this Christmas.” Stewart Milne Homes is currently building 180 new family homes at its Upton Pines development on Arrowe Park Road near the village of Upton. Lynne Vogel, the housebuilder’s senior sales manager, adds: “We want to support local organisations wherever we can and Arrowe Park hospital is just a stone’s throw away from our homes at Upton Pines. “Over the next few months we hope to be able to continue our relationship with both the Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals and provide support where we can for projects which will benefit staff, patients and the wider community.” Your Move 19

NEWS National awards success for Liverpool property developer A Liverpool property developer has been crowned Property Investor of the Year at a national awards ceremony. Paul Nicholson, managing director of Luxor Group, picked up the accolade at the Property Investor Awards 2017. More than 500 investors from around the UK attended the presentation at London’s Royal National Hotel earlier this month. Paul, whose latest projects include the conversion of St Helens’ former Tyrers department store into the mixed-use Nicholson Lofts, was recognised for his ‘tenacity and vision’ by the awards’ specialist independent panel of judges. Aside from Nicholson Lofts, which will comprise 15 luxury apartments along with a ground floor and basement commercial unit, the developer has also acquired Claughton House in St Helens with plans to turn it into 18 residential units. Luxor Group was also named runner-up in the Property Development of the Year category during the event for its Luxor Court project in Liverpool’s Kensington area. Commenting on the awards recognition Paul, who acquired his first property at the age of 23, says: “It is an honour to win this award and champion the North West as a place to invest, live and work. Myself and the whole Luxor team are passionate about transforming communities to create thriving, regenerated areas. “To gain national recognition is testament to the high quality of our developments and our skill at spotting unique investment opportunities which create change. Luxor Group has experienced unprecedented growth during 2016-17, and this award cements our reputation as one of the leading investors and property developers.”

PART EXCHANGE BOOSTS SALES SUCCESS AT HUYTON DEVELOPMENT Countryside’s Harrington Place has been hailed a hit with buyers as just one home remains available. The developer’s part exchange initiative is said to have boosted sales, providing a “vital lifeline” for buyers seeking a chain-free deal in the region. The buying and selling option is also said to be proving popular for house hunters looking to relocate to the area. Celia Jukka and her husband Andrew, who wanted to return to their Huyton roots after moving to Derby 20 years ago, are among those to have benefitted having bought a property at Harrington Place. Celia says: “Not being stuck in a chain was a big relief to us - knowing that you’ve already sold your home is a huge weight off your shoulders and massive help, especially when you’re relocating. We would recommend it to anyone - it
made the process so easy, especially moving districts.” Martina Collins, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, adds: “Our part exchange initiative has proven to be a vital lifeline for buyers who are in need of a chain-free sale. Through this scheme customers are not only able to save time, but also alleviate the stress that comes with selling your home. In Celia’s case this has worked extremely well for her and her family, as it has allowed them to enjoy a much smoother experience when moving across the country, back to their hometown.” Commenting on the success of Harrington Place in particular she adds: “The development has received a fantastic response, with only one home remaining in less than 12 months.” For more information visit countrysideinspire.co.uk.

The firm picked up the prize for its team of family law specialists, which deals with a range of matters including co-habitation disputes and divorce, during a gala dinner on the capital’s South Bank. Judges of this year’s Family Law Awards were said to be impressed by MSB’s entry, which outlined the firm’s “dedication to promoting diversity and career progression within its team”. ETHICAL HOUSING FIRM PROPOSED TO DELIVER NEW HOMES A new ethical housing company could be set up by Liverpool City Council with an aim to build 10,000 homes across the city. The venture is expected to create 2,000 new jobs as it delivers a range of properties including homes for the homeless, foster carers, large families, the elderly and people with disabilities. Cabinet members are recommended to give the new company, which would be named ‘Foundations’, the go-ahead during a 15 December meeting to help shake up Liverpool’s housing market and accelerate the rent to buy sector. Fuelled by an estimated £500 million investment programme, the plan would help the local authority to meet housing needs and bring varied supply to the city’s stock dominated by small terraced housing which is said to skew council tax revenues. The council is also looking to ‘future proof the housing market for an aging population’, with homes that people can live in independently for longer and intermediary accommodation to help keep people out of long term hospital stays. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson says: “This will be a win-win for everyone as the council will be able to increase Council Tax, influence the quality of the housing and support people who want to buy by turning rent into a deposit. This company has more than just a social value, its business model also stacks up as a serious investment in the future of the city. “As we’ve shown through the purchase of the Cunard Building, which now generates £2m a year for the council, our invest to earn strategy works and profits from this new company will also be reinvested into council services to offset the damaging cuts this city has experienced these past seven years.” If approved by cabinet, the new housing company is due to be ratified at the next full council meeting in January.
bursting at the seams. To say I am delighted with this award would be an understatement. “It is something we have worked incredibly hard for and it has been a real collective effort.” She adds: “We invest heavily in lifelong learning and specialist training for all our staff so that they can continually stay abreast of changes within the sector. “Additionally, we spend much time developing working relationships with support agencies, local authorities and other law firms to ensure we have access to the best knowledge on emerging issues and have developed a formidable network, which in turn will be of massive benefit to our clients.” MSB now employs 43 staff across its family department.

CHRISTMAS PREPARATION
CLEAR OUT AND HELP OUT It’s as important a part of the Christmas preparations as decorating the house and wrapping the presents - the big clean, and we’re talking about more than a quick hoover and a dust. “The main event of the big day is undoubtedly Christmas dinner,” says Hayley Vaughan, co-owner of Liverpool-based cleaning firm Envy Cleaning Services. “At the heart of everything is the oven. A dirty oven not only looks unsightly but will also have an adverse impact on the taste of your roast. Ensure your oven is gleaming by taking the time to clean thoroughly using readily available products such as Oven Brite. If your oven requires a deeper clean or you do not have the time to carry out a clean, why not treat yourself to a professional oven/hob/hood clean.” And while you’re in the kitchen, you should turn your attention to the fridge too. “One of the best things about preparing for Christmas is the big food shop,” says Hayley’s sister and Envy co-owner Nicola. “Why not take this as an opportunity to give your fridge a full clean. Start by clearing out any out of date items. Once all food items have been removed, take out the shelves and soak them in warm, soapy water. Whilst in soak, clean the inside of the fridge using a solution of water and either vinegar or baking soda to ensure a sparkling finish.” The secret, says Hayley, is planning ahead. “Avoid the stress of last minute cleaning by tackling one room at a time. Make a plan and concentrate firstly on those areas where your guests will spend the most time, such as the lounge, dining room and bathrooms. “If you are having guests to stay over, be sure to change the bedding in good time prior to the big day. Nobody wants to be changing a bed at 11pm on Christmas Eve. Why not add an extra special touch to your guest room with some festive bedding and some diffuser sticks with a festive scent. “Make sure to give the room a thorough vacuuming and dusting as spare/guest bedrooms can gather dust if not being used very often.”
If you’re decluttering ahead of the big day why not help out those in need in the process. There are plenty of places in Liverpool where you can take your pre-loved goods. The Whitechapel Centre, for example, is currently looking for good quality clothes, shoes, toys and towels (for a full list of what’s needed visit www.whitechapelcentre.co.uk) while charity shops are always keen to receive pre-loved toys and books.
Keep it green From fairy lights to central heating, Christmas can be tough on the old energy bills. But the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has some top tips for cutting your costs and saving energy this Christmas. Try switching your Christmas lights to LEDs this year. According to the EST, LED Christmas lights use 90% less energy than incandescent. That means if everyone in the UK swapped just one string of lights for LEDs we would save £13 million during the 12 days of Christmas alone. To keep in the heat make sure there are no draughts in your windows and doors. The EST also suggests moving furniture away from radiators while investing in radiator reflector panels will help to reflect the heat back into your room. And before you buy in a load of tech gifts for your loved ones, bear in mind that tablets use 70% less power than laptops, according to the EST, which says the number of devices in people’s homes has grown rapidly and leaving these devices on standby has an impact on our energy bills.

It’s not just the house that needs to be prepared ahead of Christmas. Most of us could do with a little mental maintenance too! The pressure to get things right, the in-laws overstaying their welcome and the little ones getting overtired often means that by 26 December we’re all a little burnt out. But it needn’t be that way. “Take control of what you can control,” says trainer and mindfulness coach Terry McCoy of The NLP Works. “You may not be able to control external events but you can control your response to them. You may not be able to control the fact that your mum gets even more ‘judgey’ about your parental skills/cooking/lifestyle when she gets ‘baubled’ but you can control how you respond.” Terry says it’s also important to learn to say ‘no’ without feeling bad about it. “I’m assuming that if I surveyed 100 people and asked them what kind of person you are most would say you’re a ‘thoroughly good egg’! If that’s the case then the people who really matter will respect your decision not to have Christmas their way. Decide what and who is important to you and act accordingly - set your boundaries.” And when you inevitably get stressed out by a family argument, a tantrum-throwing toddler or a demanding mother in law? “Remove yourself,” says Terry. “Change the situation and just breathe. So underrated yet so useful as emotional first aid. “When you find yourself about to react in a way that you may well regret for the rest of the year take three breaths or carry on until you feel calmer before you respond. In through the nose and out through the mouth and breath out for two seconds longer than you breath in. If it’s good enough for the Navy Seals as a way to stay calm under pressure then it’s good enough for you.”

CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGNS YOUR MOVE SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON SOME OF LIVERPOOL’S FESTIVE CAMPAIGNERS WHO ANNUALLY SPEND THE MONTHS LEADING UP TO CHRISTMAS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST
The
gift of giving Volunteers help to sort through the many donated boxes of gifts
VORNY REDMOND’S SHOEBOX FULL OF LOVE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN INSPIRING LIVERPOOL BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS TO HELP THOSE IN NEED LOCALLY BY DONATING ESSENTIALS IN GIFT-WRAPPED PACKAGES. What prompted you to start Shoebox Full of Love and continue it year after year? VR: I’d seen a television advert for shoeboxes to be sent abroad and I realised how many people in our own community are in need, so I put an appeal together for my friends to donate. I thought maybe 15 people would donate to help rough sleepers but then social media took over and we ended up with my mum’s living room being filled with over 1,400 gifts. As the appeal has grown and the wonderful staff at Rent a Space have donated more and more space to us, the recipient organisations list has also grown. I continue to run the appeal as the need is so real and homelessness can strike any of us at any time. I’ve seen first-hand the reactions of recipients and the impact donations make. It also helps me to be a better person; I meet wonderful people, I get an insight into other people's lives, I visit schools and educate the younger generation on how to be kind.
What has the 2017 response been like and how has the campaign grown? VR: 2017 has been incredible from the outset; the appeal has reached so much further and so many more people have heard about it and got involved from donating to volunteering time, premises, deliveries, etc. This year we’ll beat 2016’s total. How much time do you dedicate to the project? VR: I donate four months of the year to ensure it runs smoothly and to make sure that all donations go to the right places. This year I’ve had to take on extra admin staff on the Facebook page as I was struggling to find the time to answer every query. What support is required from volunteers, donors and businesses to make the campaign a success? VR: The volunteers are the campaign - they
donate, collect and deliver. I just had an idea but the Merseyside community makes it a reality – we’re unique here. The appeal just gives a platform to those who want to help. Who benefits from Shoebox Full of Love? VR: Rough sleepers, hostels, refuges, domestic violence refuges, community centres in low income areas, neighbourhood centres, Dogs Trust, Alley Cats and Kittens and the James Bulger Memorial Trust. Anywhere that needs help, we help. Although this year’s shoebox deadline has passed, are there still ways people can support the cause or register an interest for next year? VR: Absolutely. Follow us on the Shoebox Full of Love Facebook page, on Twitter at @shoeboxoflove, on Instagram or visit www.shoeboxfulloflove.co.uk for updates.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER, KAREN AND ASH DOWNING LAUNCHED PYJAMA PARTY LIVERPOOL IN 2013, DRUMMING UP DONATIONS OF NEW CHRISTMAS EVE PYJAMAS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN IN NEED. IT’S ATTRACTED GENEROUS GIVING FROM BEYOND THE CITY REGION. Karen Downing with housing association Regenda, which was among 2017’s campaign supporters
Still time to help… If the build-up to Christmas has flown by this year without you having time to assemble your gift-filled shoebox or purchase pyjamas in time for the deadlines, fear not. There are still local causes in need of help if you have something to give.
THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE
When did you set up Pyjama Party Liverpool and what prompted the idea? KD: We set up the appeal in response to a social media post by the homeless charity Shelter. It said there would be 80,000 children waking up homeless on Christmas Day. We wanted to help children in our area who would be affected. It was a tiny acorn of an idea - we thought pyjamas for children to wear on Christmas Eve would not only send a message that someone cares, but also new warm pyjamas give feelings of comfort. Plus it's an unwritten law that you have to have new pyjamas on Christmas Eve in Liverpool! Who does the campaign help and how have you seen it make a difference? KD: We initially wanted to help a Liverpool hostel and the idea was to ask our family and friends to donate to help us. However, we had such an amazing response in four weeks that we were able to help hostels and refuges in Liverpool, Sefton, Halton, Knowsley and Wirral. We now cover all of Merseyside and surrounding areas, and we’re able to help services supporting children who are not homeless but in great need too. How has the project gathered momentum and grown since it first began? KD: Initially we had enquiries from across the UK and other countries, with some asking how to get involved and set up similar projects in their own area. We're so fortunate that Pyjama Party Liverpool continues to be a growing community and we have many individuals and organisations collecting on our behalf across the five boroughs. This year students from Wrexham University have joined us and are collecting donations too, and we have lovely donors across the country sending pyjamas by post each year. Every person who gets involved, including
those sharing social media posts, organisations who support us and people in the media highlighting our campaign, is a part of Pyjama Party Liverpool. How much time do you dedicate to Pyjama Party Liverpool? KD: We start planning around September/ October and from then on it can be busy on social media, but Ash is great at keeping up with enquiries, liaising with media and gathering collection points. In December we contact services to find out what they need for the children they’re working with. We also gather volunteers who collect and deliver the pyjamas - we’d be lost without them. It can be very busy right up until Christmas Eve as every pair will reach a child who needs them in time for Christmas. What has the response to this year’s campaign been like? KD: We won't know the final figure until we’ve gathered all of the pyjamas after our 15 December closing date. What has been striking this year is the number of new requests that we’re receiving from services, often on a daily basis. Things are getting more difficult for people within our communities and we don't know if we’re able to fulfil all requests as that depends on donations, but we do our best to help wherever we can. At what point can people get involved in next year’s campaign? KD: A lovely group which supports us each year is holding a fundraiser in March and the proceeds will go towards pyjamas for 2018’s campaign. People can get involved at any point, holding collections in their community, place of work or with family and friends. Come and join the Pyjama Party and we can make sure even more children go to sleep on Christmas Eve in new warm, cosy pyjamas.
The Whitechapel Centre’s work to end homelessness and give support for those affected continues throughout the festive season, as the charity serves up Christmas Day and Boxing Day lunches and goodie bags for service users. Donations of food, decorations and gifts will be gratefully received as the centre strives to host a welcoming and special day during what can be a difficult time for many. The last day for food donations is Friday 22 December, and a guide to which items are suitable and most necessary to donate can be found at www.whitechapelcentre.co.uk.
FOODBANKS Foodbanks across Liverpool are in need of donations throughout the year to help those living in food poverty, with the build up to Christmas being a particularly busy time. The Hanover Street-based Merseyside Youth Association Food Bank, helping young people under 25, is currently preparing Christmas hampers and is collecting donations of suitable foods and essentials until 18 December. Meanwhile the HOPE+ Food Bank, providing food for those in the shadow of Liverpool’s two cathedrals, continues its appeal for donations and a number of foodbanks around the Liverpool City Region can be found at www.trusselltrust.org.

UPMARKET CAFÉ PLAN FOR FORMER CROSBY BEAUTY SALON A former beauty salon in Crosby could be transformed into an upmarket café under new plans. Proposals from Emma Kinsley, who was previously general manager of nearby restaurant So Salsa, have been recommended for approval by Sefton Council’s planning committee. Emma wants to turn the vacant shop next to St Luke's Halsall CE Primary School on Manor Road into a new café serving “good coffee and good food” with a “warm atmosphere and real, honest service”. Emma is no stranger to the catering business. As well as her time at So Salsa, she has managed a number of restaurants and cafés in London including most recently Vinyl Café in Kings Cross. According to a document included within her planning application, Emma believes an “upmarket café” will be a welcome addition to the area.
ITALIAN RESTAURANT COULD BE HEADING TO SPEKE RETAIL PARK
Italian restaurant Zizzi could be opening at the New Mersey Shopping Park. The pizza and pasta chain has applied to Liverpool City Council for permission to operate in Unit L9 of the Speke retail centre. If approved, the new restaurant would become the group’s second in Liverpool, joining a branch in Liverpool ONE. Zizzi is planning to open in one of the new units currently being constructed as part of a £23 million extension to the South Liverpool shopping hub which will deliver a new 11screen Cineworld cinema and an additional 29,000 sq ft of restaurant space across six units. TGI Fridays, Nando’s and wagamama have already been confirmed for three of the units. The restaurant element of the expansion is expected to open in late spring 2018 with the cinema following in the summer.
KIOSK PRESENTS BAR MONT BLANC
Cains Brewery Village, L8 If you weren’t looking for it, you'd be forgiven for walking straight past Kiosk on your way into Cains Brewery Village. Located in the brewery’s old security hut near the entrance to Liverpool’s trendiest food and drink spot, Kiosk might well be the city’s smallest drinking den - certainly its most unique. After spending the summer months set up as an Italian beach bar, Kiosk is back for the winter with an Alpine ski lodge theme. In-keeping with the mountainous motif, the weather was suitably baltic on the evening my partner and I headed along to sample the drinks menu. After the pair of us had clambered inside Kiosk à la two freezing cocky watchpersons, it was clear the interior designer had got things spot on with regards to the theme. Vintage skiing posters, a genuine pair of skis hitched to the ceiling and plenty of chopped wood gave the place a really authentic and intimate vibe. After three steps we were at the bar and found coowner Conor, who genially welcomed us into his quaint establishment before proceeding to talk us through the drinks menu which focuses on bespoke
REVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS
mulled wines, vintage French vermouths and traditional festive favourites. Conor’s passion was obvious and by the time he’d finished waxing lyrical on the menu the pair of us couldn't wait to try something. Still smarting from the cold weather, neither of us needed much convincing to give two from the ‘Winter Warmers’ section a try. My Bircher (£6) - Byrrh, Lot 40 Rye Whisky, mulled spices and cranberry - was a welcome alternate slant on the hot toddies seemingly churned out by every other establishment in Liverpool at this time of year. The inclusion of Byrrh a wine-based apéritif made of red wine, mistelle and quinine which was marketed as a health drink in the early 20th Century - gave the drink a pleasantly fruity and almost medicinal quality. My partner was equally as taken with her hot G & Tea (£6) which combined Suze (Swiss bitter flavoured with gentian root), Beefeater gin, tonic, apple and chamomile. A gin and tonic fanatic, she was more than happy to sample her top tipple’s warmed-up relative. Delighted with the results,
she described the addition of the Suze as “ingenious”. After a few swigs of our respective brews we plucked up the courage to venture back outside into Kiosk’s adjoining log cabin. Mercifully the wooden outhouse was lovely and cosy thanks to a roaring open fire, faux fur rugs and super strength halogen bulbs. A couple more mouthfuls and we were back inside ready for round two. I’d quickly acquired a taste for the Byrrh and will be requesting a bottle for Christmas after adoring it again with Green Spot Irish Whiskey and cherry beer in my Red Spotter (£6). My partner, meanwhile, went for The Hugo (£6) Beefeater gin, elderflower, mint, prosecco and fresh lime. She was bowled over by the combination of prosecco and gin, and appreciated the refreshing mint aftertaste. It’s worth noting for non-cocktail lovers that a range of bespoke beers is also available. So, if you’re out for a few drinks this festive period and fancy something truly different, go check out Kiosk – there really is nothing else like it.

CHRISTMAS HERE IN LIVERPOOL IS MAGICAL AND MUCH OF WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL AT THIS TIME OF YEAR IS UNIQUE TO THE CITY WITH THIS IN MIND WE’VE ROUNDED UP SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE LIVERPOOL-ONLY WAYS TO ENJOY THE FESTIVE SEASON
Come and meet the big man For many Liverpudlians growing up, visiting Lewis’s historic Christmas Grotto in the famous old department store was as essential to the festive experience as mince pies and a blazing family row over your roast dinner. There was something almost mystical about descending into the alternative world inhabited by elves, pixies, fairies and, of course, Old Saint Nick himself. Eagerly waiting in line with your parents and siblings before telling the big man what you wanted for Christmas was indescribably exciting for a seven-year-old. The sad closure of Lewis’s in 2010 appeared to spell the end for this proud Liverpool tradition but thanks to the store’s former photographer Mike Done, who purchased the grotto, it has been able to continue for the last seven years at Rapid hardware store. This year it's the turn of St John’s Market to play host to what’s now known as ‘Liverpool’s Famous Grotto’. It may no longer take place in the same building, or even bear the same name, but judging by the glowing reviews on social media the grotto has lost none of its illustrious ancestor’s charm

CHRISTMAS IN LIVERPOOL
All together now © Mersey Ferries
Ferry ‘cross the merry Mersey It might look baltic outside but by the time the football’s over on Boxing Day and you’ve demolished your umpteenth tin of Quality Street, a breath of fresh air will do you the world of good. A trip on one of Liverpool’s famous Mersey Ferries is the perfect way to blow away those cobwebs and enjoy an unrivaled view of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage waterfront at the same time. The River Explorer cruises, which are running daily over the festive period (apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 29 December), also give you the chance, if you haven’t already, to experience a ride on the fabulous Sir Peter Blake-designed Dazzle Ferry. Climb aboard ‘Snowflake’ as she takes you out on a 50-minute cruise across the River Mersey accompanied by expert audio commentary. If life on-deck gets too much (or too cold) you can always grab a hot drink from the handy on-board café.
The Grade II*-listed St Luke’s Church, which marked its full re-opening and removal from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk list in October, occupies a special place in the hearts of many Scousers. And this year, the ‘Bombed Out Church’ is marking the festive period with its own special Christmas celebration on 20 December. Taking place beneath a marquee at St Luke’s, ‘Christmas Melodies Under the Stars’ is a concert of carols, Christmas songs and more modern pieces, including tunes from ‘Frozen’ and ‘La La Land’. There will also be a mixture of a cappella and piano accompanied songs alongside a smattering of festive readings. Volunteers from the church, which has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment over the past two years, will be running a bar on the night so expect buckets of warming mulled wine.
Take me to church There are few better places to soak up some authentic Christmas magic in Liverpool than at its two magnificent cathedrals. There’s just something about midnight mass at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and likewise the First Eucharist of Christmas at Liverpool Cathedral on Christmas Eve. Always two of the year’s most popular services, congregations on the night before Christmas are often swelled by a large number of nonregular churchgoers. This year, BBC Radio 4 will be broadcasting live from the Met with Archbishop Malcolm McMahon celebrating mass from 11.30pm. At the opposite end of Hope Street in the Gothic revival masterpiece that is Liverpool Cathedral, also getting underway at 11.30pm, Canon Ellen Loudon will conduct the First Eucharist of Christmas with audible support from the Cathedral Chamber Choir and Youth Choir. All are welcome at both services.
Get your wings At 9am on 10 August 2017, Liverpool-born geologist-come-artist Paul Curtis began hand painting a pair of wings on a non-descript brick wall in the Baltic Triangle. Ten hours later and what has become known as the ‘Liver Bird Wings’ mural was complete. Within two days, queues of selfie-seekers eager to get their own personal picture with the interactive artwork had begun to form on Jamaica Street. The piece has attracted international press attention and even one inquisitive member of the Merseyside Police Mounted Section! This Christmas take a break from that last-minute shopping and wander down to the Baltic to get your very own set of angel wings.
