NEWS The NWPAs will take place at Lutyens Crypt on 11 October

ENTRIES NOW OPEN FOR ’S NWPAs Property firms and professionals across the North West can now enter categories for this year’s prestigious NWPAs. A total of 13 accolades are up for grabs at the 2018 event, which will celebrate another 12 months of success across the region’s residential and commercial property sectors. Brand new Community Award and Innovation Award titles have been introduced alongside a host of other returning prizes including Best New Affordable Housing Scheme, Regeneration Award and Best Student Landlord. Both new categories are open to entrants right across the region’s property sectors, with the Community Award recognising businesses which are giving something back to the areas they work within and the Innovation Award acknowledging those which are working to keep up with fastpaced changes in the industry. All awards will once again be presented during

a glittering annual ceremony in Lutyens Crypt at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which will this year be held on 11 October. The launch of this year’s entry process comes as a raft of businesses have signed up to sponsor the event, including several firms who are backing the celebration for the first time. New apartments to go on show at former Tyrers department store Prospective tenants will be given a first look inside the homes that are transforming St Helens’ former Tyrers department store. The Nicholson Lofts rental apartment scheme will be unveiled during an open house event on 12 January from 6pm. The showcase will also be followed by an additional open house session from 10am-2pm on Saturday 20 January. Visitors to the events will be given a taste of the living spaces being created by Luxor Group within the 15,000 sq ft development, which is expected to be completed early this year. A total of 15 apartments are being built along with a duplex commercial unit on the ground and basement level of the developer’s inaugural project in the town. The interest and anticipation we have had from potential tenants has been exceptional. REGENERATION PROJECTS BRING BOOST FOR MSB’S PROPERTY TEAM Apartments at Reliance House are expected to reach completion this spring

A Liverpool law firm has been helping to drive forward the city’s regeneration with a busy period of projects in the property sector. As a number of city centre developments have been coming to fruition, MSB Solicitors has been providing expert advice and assistance. The past year has been a busy one for the property market in Liverpool. New developments have sprung up across the city. Large-scale schemes progressed with gusto while others came to a grinding halt. Student property continued to dominate the landscape while city centre living remained popular. Now, looking ahead, 2018 appears set to be an equally exciting year - not least because the 20 Your Move

government’s decision to scrap Stamp Duty for first-time buyers on properties up to £300,000 is expected to see a surge in interest from house hunters who have otherwise been holding back. Here at Your Move we’ve brought together some of our trusted experts across all fields in property to find out their views on the 12 months ahead.

Stock levels are currently insufficient to match levels of demand from buyers and this imbalance could ultimately drive prices upwards. There is speculation that more repossession stock will enter the market next year from lenders who have been sitting on property and this may have an effect on the balance of stock. Moreover, interest rates remain low and there is more choice than ever from mortgage lenders, while overseas buyers should continue to be attracted by the weak pound. Hopefully, signs of increased confidence among buyers will eventually be reflected by renewed vendor confidence and we will see a wider range of properties being made available for sale. Demand for lettings will doubtless remain high, while rental availability may be further reduced as new tax changes come into play and force individual landlords to sell their properties. The impending white paper on tenant fees will see landlords having to cover more costs. The fear is that this could ultimately lead to higher rents as supply remains out of sync with demand.

With political and economic conditions remaining uncertain, there may be slower than expected house price growth in 2018 but this should bounce back once confidence and stability has returned. Despite this uncertainty the residential market in Liverpool remains active, and the move to abolish Stamp Duty should act as an incentive for first-time buyers hoping to get on to the property ladder in 2018. To see sustained levels of growth, housing supply needs to be a focus to ensure local families have access to affordable homes in the city. Liverpool has a thriving private rented sector (PRS), with landlords enjoying some of the highest yields in the country. Rental property is in demand from both buy-to-let landlords coming into the market and existing landlords keen to continue investing. I predict that PRS will grow yet again in 2018, despite stricter regulations, reductions in tax relief and the significant Stamp Duty tax rise.

Whilst the current political climate has caused some uncertainty, I think the property market will continue to be buoyant in 2018. Continuing uncertainty around Brexit may defer some people from buying, with many would-be buyers weighing up and indeed waiting out potential outcomes. This, coupled with the increase in interest rates, could see many home owners staying put in the short to medium term. In contrast though, the changes to Stamp Duty are likely to see more first-time buyers get

a foot on the ladder given there could be a significant saving to them. Consider that money saved for Stamp Duty can now, for many, boost a deposit down payment. Stamp Duty reforms have, however, slowed the buy-to-let market and I think next year will see no change to this. On a positive note though, demand still outstrips supply and this is likely to continue into the new year – let’s hope we see some appetite from new home builders.

Liverpool’s housing market hinges on its economy. The city’s jobs market is in reasonable shape but there are areas of under-performance which are holding us back. If Liverpool could secure some of the footloose office-based jobs that seem to be migrating almost exclusively to Manchester then we’d give our housing market a real boost. The values aren’t there to encourage speculative development of the offices these modern occupiers demand so we need local authorities that will provide help in the shape of things like rental guarantees to kickstart new office construction. Otherwise, those jobs will keep heading down the M62. Across the city there’s a good supply of new suburban homes but it’s still a little skewed in the city centre towards small studio and onebedroom apartments. The economic fundamentals nationally remain positive and Liverpool’s economy has grown largely in line with its competitor cities, so our housing market should continue to grow and perform well.

Going into 2018 we don’t expect to see the market slow down as the requirement for quality new build homes in the Merseyside area remains high. As such, and as we prepare to launch our second development in the region, Tayleur Leas in Newton-le-Willows, we’re anticipating a steady demand for the government’s Help to Buy scheme, particularly from first-time buyers making the most of the recent changes to Stamp Duty. In the wider market, we expect to see house price inflation ease so although house prices will continue to rise it will be at a slower rate.

THE TOUR KICKED OFF IN MANCHESTER LAST SEPTEMBER HOW HAVE THINGS BEEN GOING SO FAR? It’s a constant maintenance project, just like any new musical. There’s only so much you can learn in a rehearsal room. You keep going to see different versions because each city that it visits means a different audience and a different relationship between the theatre and its audience. You get some theatres that have really earned the trust of their audiences and they feel very different. Some don't and it’s harder work but it’s great for the cast because they are not going out there knowing exactly what terrain they are driving over. But it really gives the show a good road test as well. It’s also about making sure the cast members don't settle back in a show that's working and start to rely on the laughter and the emotion. They have to go out and grasp it and earn it every single night. We’ve been very lucky in these opening weeks because the audiences have been very responsive to it but there’s a danger that you can sit back then and maybe the show starts to lose the sharpness it had. DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THE MUSICAL WHEN YOU WERE WORKING WITH GARY BARLOW ON ‘THE GIRLS’ - THE STAGE VERSION OF ‘CALENDAR GIRLS’? I suppose to a degree, yes. As a writer, you sit there as an outsider to that [showbiz] world – not having been a star. It’s fascinating to watch from the sidelines. I stood at the stage door [during The Girls tour] and watched women in the audience who obviously felt that Gary and the band had been a profound part of their lives. At the time I didn't think about it. I didn't take in the fact that these women were there with their daughters of all different ages. I was thinking ‘I wonder what the husbands are doing?’ and ‘how does this devotion affect the people around them?’. When the idea for the television series [‘Let It Shine’] came around, that was the catalyst. Gary came to me and told me about it and I said ‘look mate, you’re mad!’. I told him there was no chance he would be able to find five lads who could sing and be funny enough to pull it off. That's when I went away and had the idea that the guys could, instead of being the story, almost be like a Greek chorus – never leaving the stage and supporting another story. That’s also when the memories of the girls who I’d seen at the stage door came in. I suddenly thought, ‘this isn’t your [Take That] story, this is about the songs – it’s not about the

light of the stars but the light of the fans’. And so this story was born about a load of girls who go to see a gig when they’re at school and then we jump forward to see the women that they became in their 40s. That seemed such an interesting starting point that I then moved through the band’s back catalogue and decided that the songs didn't need to be lyrically relevant but it did need to be the right song at the right time. The lads who sing are never referred to as ‘Take That’, just as ‘the boys in the band’ because they’re that much a part of the girls lives that you end up with this almost choral function which I hope supports the story and gives a clear representation of how important and fundamental the music is to the lives of the fans.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO WRITING? I UNDERSTAND WILLY RUSSELL WAS INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR EARLY YEARS AS A PLAYWRIGHT? Yes, I started writing on a course that Willy was the tutor on. At that stage he had just written ‘Blood Brothers’ and that, in many ways, is the Holy Grail for me. It's a musical that plays into everything I love about musical theatre. It loves being on stage, it’s very theatrical, it’s very simple and it’s an original story. I was 18 when I went on Willy’s writing course and it changed everything. That beacon of the original musical is still out there for me. When I look at what I really want to do I can attribute it all to the pain, but the challenge, of creating a new story and a new musical, which is phenomenally rare in this country.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU NEXT? ARE YOU PLANNING TO GO BACK INTO TELEVISION OR FILM OR STICK WITH THEATRE? I really hope it will be the stage. In a way it’s the most dangerous and most risky of those three to be involved with as a writer. Obviously with television and film the proceeds are higher and the level of security is far greater whereas with the stage you can spend four years writing a musical before doing one workshop where you realise you've got nothing. I’ve just turned 50 and as you get older you become very acute at diagnosing what quickens the heart. For me it’s standing at the back of a theatre watching an audience react to your musical. There’s nothing like it.

WITH SO MANY SONGS TO CHOOSE FROM HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT PICKING THE ONES FOR THE SHOW? WERE YOU EVER WORRIED YOU MIGHT UPSET SOME FANS BY MISSING OUT ONE OF THEIR FAVOURITES? You do, but once you come up with a story and start to plot it out, that story is a very selfish and prescriptive beast. If it doesn’t want a song, even if you really like a song, the show will shake it off. You've got to listen to that because at some point someone will be sitting in a theatre thinking exactly the same thing. The songs can’t outlive their welcome and they can’t necessarily be in the same shape that they were as singles. Because Gary has been writing songs since the age of 16 until now at the age of 46, the songs have very different colours so it meant there was a variety in the catalogue. When the girls are 16 they are listening to the songs that came during the first incarnation of the band and when we hear songs from the second incarnation of the band we’re looking at a stage full of 40-year-old women.

‘BLUE MONDAY’ FUNDRAISING FEAST A night of food, wine, beer and cocktails will brighten up ‘blue Monday’ in the name of charity. Alder Hey Children’s Charity will host the event at Fazenda Bar & Grill in Exchange Flags, bringing celebrations to a day which is claimed to be a depressing time of year. All proceeds from the 15 January evening will go to the cause, helping to develop the hospital’s ward-based chef programme and menus. STEAKHOUSE REBRAND PLANNED FOR OTTERSPOOL PUB A well-known South Liverpool pub could be rebranded as a steakhouse under new plans. Mitchells & Butlers, which owns Harvester Otterspool near Jericho Lane, wants to turn the pub into a Miller & Carter Steakhouse. The firm has submitted an application to Liverpool City Council for a brand change and refurbishment. If approved the restaurant would become Liverpool’s second Miller & Carter, joining an Albert Dock branch.

EXPANSION LINED UP FOR POPULAR PUB Expansion plans are in the pipeline for a popular Georgian Quarter pub in 2018. The Caledonia has taken to social media to tell followers how it’s preparing to build on the success of 2017 – a year that saw it launch a vegan food offering. Via Facebook a spokesperson for the pub says: “In 2018 we hope to stay the same and aspire to get better! Plans to open an upstairs dining room (so we can take bookings!), join Deliveroo and open a couple of little side projects are in the works!”

GEORGE’S KITCHEN Paradise Street, L1 Liverpool’s George’s Kitchen is the fourth UK restaurant to be opened by two best friends promising proper British food with a unique twist. Opposite John Lewis, it’s in a great location for those seeking an alternative to the usual chains in Liverpool ONE. It was a Monday night, not usually the favoured day to eat out, so I was expecting it to be a little empty and lacking in atmosphere. I was wrong, very wrong. After receiving a lovely warm welcome, I scanned the restaurant to see that it was in fact rather full. Excellent - no speaking to my partner in hushed tones. The décor is eclectic with ornate chandeliers as well as beach hut-style tables named after different areas of Merseyside – a nice touch, demonstrating George’s has done its research. We opted for the Southport one. The server went through the menus, explaining the ‘sweetshop inspired’ and ‘famous five’ cocktail deals and highlighted some of the standout dishes. To quench our thirsts, I opted for the refreshing Brighton Bloomer - a boozy lemonade with Bloom gin and also sloe gin for a seasonal twist. Annoyingly, the other half didn’t fancy the 2-4-£12 cocktail deal and went for a glass of Malbec. The vast menu caters for most but is perhaps a bit limited for vegetarians and vegans. There’s a separate gluten-free menu which I’m sure will be welcomed by

REVIEW BY ELLIE ADSHEAD many customers. To start I opted for George’s Runny Yolk Scotch Egg (£5.95), and beautifully runny it was. Packed with flavour, it was served with a side of ‘splendid’ piccalilli their words and also mine. Delicious. The other half had the Classic George's Squid (£5.85) which was light, crisp and impeccably cooked, not at all resembling rubber bands which tends to be our fear whenever we order squid. The serving was large and worked well with the ambiguously named ‘spicy sauce’. After a brief break, although had I known how big my main was going to be I would have come back the next day, the next course arrived. My Wild Ocean Cod in Onion Bhaji Batter (£13.85) was gigantic and although initially I felt over faced, I soon got over it and tucked into the tender fillet of cod encased in crispy batter. It came with rice which you may think is questionable, but together with the homemade curry sauce it brought the dish together perfectly and put an exciting spin on a British classic. My partner chose the Scouse Pie (£10.95), which fulfils the restaurant’s ethos of ‘proper British food with a unique twist’. The slow cooked lamb was succulent,

tender and served in a shortcrust pastry case topped with bubble and squeak mash. Our server recommended trying the twice-cooked chips smothered in stilton (an extra £1.50). My dinner date was intrigued and thankful for the tip as they were “phenomenal”. The chips themselves were proper ‘chippy chips’ – winner! As if by a miracle, we found space for dessert and my eye was instantly drawn to the Apple & Caramac Higgledy-Piggledy Crumble Pie (£5.95). Unlike the rest of the dishes, this was quite small but deliciously sweet and the right size for satisfying any cravings. My date chose the Warm Cadbury's Fudge Finger Rolls (£5.95), likening it to a delicate version of the iconic deep fried Mars Bar. Two fudge bars came coated in crispy breadcrumbs and oozed in the middle. It was accompanied by ice cream with salted caramel and chocolate sauces. As we left - full, content and easing into a sugarinduced coma – George’s Kitchen had made quite the impression on us, with plans to return already made. As the city continues to offer a broad range of cuisines, it’s refreshing to see a newcomer bringing tradition with that unexpected twist.

TACOTASTIC The humble taco is nothing new but 2018 is the year to expect interesting twists on the Mexican classic. Think breakfast tacos, dessert tacos, tacos with seaweed shells and even tacos without the shell. Just in time for this food fad, American chain and king of the fast food taco, Taco Bell, looks set to open several branches here in the city next year. Whilst the Mexican-inspired eatery isn’t exactly renowned for its authenticity Stateside, it’s supposedly super-tasty and kind to your bank balance.

If you thought a tofu salad was as exciting as vegan food could get then be prepared to learn a thing or two this year as vegan grub gets supersized. Yes, we’re talking monster burgers, pizzas and chicken-less fried chicken. It’s vegan, but not as you know it. The guys at Liverpool’s Down the Hatch are already on board with this particular movement, serving up a jackfruit and seitanfilled menu of ‘junk food’.

This one’s all about Indian food but there’s no tikka masala or korma in sight. Instead expect plenty of the smoked, grilled and seared delicacies commonly found on the streets of Mumbai or Delhi. It’s one anticipated food trend on this list that the people of Liverpool might already be well aware of thanks to local success story Mowgli. Founded in 2014 by Nisha Katona, who gave up her job as a barrister to start the restaurant, Mowgli’s menu is based on the kind of food Indians eat at home and on their streets.

Industry experts are predicting 2018 will be a big 12 months for Middle Eastern cuisine. The likes of pitta, hummus and falafel are now as commonplace in our kitchens as sliced white bread, ketchup and baked beans but this year will apparently see us delve deeper into the region’s foodie traditions. Expect spices like cardamom, harissa and za’atar to become more prevalent as well as dishes like grilled halloumi, mansaf and kofta. This one also seems to be another projected food trend that Liverpool is well placed to cash in on with eateries such as Bakchich and Fattoush in the city centre and Medjool Bistro on Lark Lane. Meanwhile city street food operator Hafla Hafla has been sending Liverpool’s foodies into a frenzy with its spectacular halloumi fries which come with a variety of delightful toppings including bourbon and maple mayonnaise and crispy bacon bits.

JAPANESE ‘ DUDE FOOD’ Forget sushi and ramen noodles because 2018 will be the turn of indulgent and heavier Japanese dishes. A combination of authentic Japanese pub-grub and the hearty ‘dude food’ enjoyed in southern US states, expect the likes of deepfried tofu mixed with bold American flavours. London-based Seedlip claims to have solved the age-old dilemma of ‘what to drink when you’re not drinking’ with its distilled nonalcoholic botanical blend which, when paired with tonic water, is described as the perfect alternative to the classic ‘G & T’.
