FROM WITH SHARED OWNERSHIP

Clock Tower Drive, Walton, L9 This brightly decorated boudoir is a typical example of the bedrooms on offer at Riverside Home Ownership’s Clock Tower Drive development in Walton. Quality pieces such as a crushed velvet–style headboard and sturdy bedside tables help give the well-proportioned room a quality feel. Aimed at first-time buyers and growing families, the two and three-bedroom homes are available exclusively through Shared Ownership.

PCM Falkner Square, Canning, L8 Set within a Liverpool area very much under the spotlight at the moment thanks to the hit BBC television series ‘A House Through Time’. Like its famous Canning compadre at 62 Falkner Street, this beautiful Georgian terrace has a storied history all of its own thanks to a celebrated local architect. Peter Ellis, who designed the modernist-style Oriel Chambers on Water Street, called the Falkner Square property home from 1804-1884. Now split into a number of apartments, flat number four is a three-bedroom, furnished duplex, understatedly presented and in possession of a New York loftstyled master bedroom with an en suite shower room.

Mr T Herd, Anfield

We have been dealing with Abode for the past year, whilst looking for a house to buy and renting out a property that we own. We have always been treated impeccably, and with high regard and the staff have always been very friendly and personable. We would always highly recommend buying, selling or renting with Abode, due to the manor and the efficiency of the staff.

I wanted to convey our thanks for the support in getting the tenants and how smooth the process was.

I rented my home out recently as a first time landlord. I felt very comfortable and confident leaving my property in the hands of Abode after they were highly recommended to me by a friend. I would certainly use their service again!

NEWS Redrow returns treasured statue to Holly Lodge Redrow has reunited Holly Lodge Girls’ College with part of its history after rescuing and restoring a much-loved statue. The well-known piece displaying a man and woman cradling children, entitled ‘Hope’, had been forgotten and lost when pupils from the West Derby school were relocated to brand new purpose-built premises in 2015 and land from their former site was sold for development. But after an appeal to housebuilder Redrow, which is transforming the former school site, the popular sandstone statue has been found and returned to the college - taking pride of place within the entrance of its new building. Mark McHugh, estates manager at Holly Lodge, says: “The statue is a part of the school, part of its history, and we really didn’t want to lose it. “When I realised it hadn’t moved with us from its home in the Orchard of Hope, I contacted Redrow and asked if it could be located so we could get it back.” Redrow site manager Steve Daw, who is working to create family homes at the new Regency Manor development on land formerly occupied by the school, recovered ‘Hope’ so he could hand it back to its rightful owners.

NEWS WIRRAL COUNCIL PLANS EXTENSION TO SELECTIVE LICENSING SCHEME

The initiative aims to raise standards of rental accommodation

Wirral Council is looking to take action against more rogue landlords by extending a licensing scheme in the borough. The initiative, which forces landlords to improve properties which are in poor condition or face having them taken off the market, could be rolled out across more areas under the latest proposals. A public consultation is currently underway until 21 March over the plans, which would see the Selective Licensing scheme extended to cover four more parts of east Wirral – areas which have a higher than average number of private rented housing available and a high turnover of tenants. Selective Licensing requires landlords to agree to a range of conditions around the standards of their accommodation. The four new areas proposed are Hamilton Square, Seacombe St Pauls, Birkenhead West and Birkenhead Central. They would join Egerton North, Birkenhead South, Seacombe Library and Egremont Promenade South where Selective Licensing is already in place. Councillor George Davies, Wirral Council cabinet member for housing and community safety, says: “Wirral residents demand – and deserve – to live in good quality, safe and attractive housing. “We will not tolerate Wirral residents being forced to live in poor conditions by irresponsible landlords. “This licensing scheme is a good way for us to tackle this issue and, where a landlord does not live up to their responsibilities to their tenants, we will not hesitate to take action against them.”

Progress for Liverpool’s Ten Streets vision The transformation of Liverpool docklands into the Ten Streets creativity district is expected to take a step closer on Friday 9 February. Several projects including the redevelopment of the Grade II-listed Tobacco Warehouse to create 538 new apartments are already underway within the area, however a Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF) for the whole site spanning more than 100 acres could be approved. Subject to final sign off by Liverpool City Council cabinet members, the document will be adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) and will then become a material consideration in the determination of planning applications within the site. It will also provide support for any use of CPO (Compulsory Purchase Order) powers in the area. The progress comes after residents and businesses were invited to give feedback on the Ten Street vision when the draft SRF went out to public consultation last October. A report to be considered by cabinet members during a meeting at the Cunard Building also offers an update on current projects within the

Ten Streets area. It says show apartments at the Tobacco Warehouse on Stanley Dock are due to open in early 2018 with the first phase of works to provide a new commercial floor expected to be completed later this year. Meanwhile site investigation works for Liverpool’s new cruise liner terminal are programmed for early 2018 with works, subject

More than 100 acres could be transformed into the creative district

to funding agreements, due to commence this autumn. A planning application to relocate the Isle of Man ferry terminal to Liverpool Waters is also expected to be submitted by the Isle of Man government in spring 2018, and pre-planning discussions are underway for a new Everton Football Club stadium with an application expected to be submitted this summer.

CHRISTINE TONER FINDS OUT HOW VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY IS BEING USED TO BRING PROPERTY TO LIFE FOR HOUSE HUNTERS

VIRTUAL HOUSE HUNTING

Photo: iStock/dima_sidelnikov

A

nyone who has ever been house hunting knows that while a picture can tell a thousand words it can also hide a multitude of sins. Those photos on property portals which showed a spacious and light family kitchen/diner seem somewhat deceitful when you’re faced with a cramped dark room with barely enough space for a breakfast bar. What if there was a way you could view a property exactly how it is before deciding whether it’s worth actually going to visit it? Well, thanks to advancements in technology, there is. Virtual tours, which use virtual reality to allow would-be buyers to ‘walk’ through a property without actually visiting it, are growing in popularity. Daisy Burns is digital marketing co-ordinator at Bootle-based 360Vu, which creates virtual tours for property clients. “For many years people have relied solely on single photographs of properties,” she says. “There is no doubt that photos can be taken to hide problems within properties. However, we use a high-quality technology that exposes the property; warts and all. It’s about giving customers a true representation of property at a timely and affordable cost.” Rob Bence is co-founder of The Property Hub Group, which includes development arm Property Hub Homes. He is currently working on two new developments - a 14-house development in Crewe, featuring a mix of detached and semi-detached properties, and 24 apartments in Ashton in Manchester. He says virtual tours are becoming an essential tool for developers. "For developers, virtual reality tours offer a fantastic opportunity to bring a development to life,” explains Rob. “They enable potential buyers to get a feel for the way a property will look in a way brochures and pictures cannot do. It’s an immersive experience. “We’re certainly looking to offer virtual tours of our developments and are currently speaking with a number of firms offering the technology." But it’s not just developers looking to show off unfinished developments that can benefit from VR technology. 360Vu produces virtual tours of properties for estate agents, sellers and auction houses amongst others. “We want to make purchasing property so much easier and efficient,” says Daisy. “Whether carrying out viewings on a commercial office space, or showing potential customers around an investment property in auction, it can be tedious and time consuming for agents. “Today's consumer wants things as quickly as possible and virtual tours play straight into this. It’s quick and easy for buyers to view, it helps them in their decision-making and they can eliminate properties and filter the choice of what to buy or view within minutes. “There is no other way for the industry to expand other than to embrace innovation through such technical enhancements as virtual tours.”

“ virtual reality tours offer a fantastic opporttunity to bring a development to life ” Rob says the property industry as a whole is embracing such initiatives in order to streamline customer service. "Technology has really shaken up the property industry,” says Rob. “It's well documented that buyers start their property search online, but now with the advent of online estate agents and even AI robo advice for mortgages, it’s clear we’re operating in a whole new landscape. “Buyers want efficiency, they want services that fit with their lifestyle. Virtual tours can help buyers to view a property in true-to-life definition from their own home before deciding whether or not to view in person. It’s all part of improving the customer journey." Indeed, the market has witnessed something of a technological revolution of late. A new breed of mortgage brokers have emerged operating solely online while the recently launched Nuvo offers mortgage advice via a Facebook chatbot. Meanwhile, of course, online estate agents are becoming more popular with sellers. Russell Quirk, is founder and CEO of online estate agent Emoov.co.uk. He says the “digital disruption” of the property sector, and the selling process in particular, has been rapid and is enabling higher levels of service at a much lower cost. “The new face of estate agency that has been pioneered by the hybrid and online sectors, complimented with third-party technology such as virtual viewings, is allowing us to search, view and buy or sell properties on our terms and timetables and not that of the agent as has

traditionally been the case,” he says. However, Russell says such technology should never be used as an alternative to viewing a property in person. “Virtual tours certainly give an additional dimension to a property's online listing and are growing in popularity as the technology is refined and perfected. They can be a great tool to help buyers narrow down their search from the comfort of their home, without having to visit property after property in person, and are also useful for sellers with little or no time to host their own viewings. “They should, however, always be the final stage of our online house hunt and not the house hunt as a whole. As with buying a car, we would always recommend that buyers view a property in person before submitting an offer." That said there’s certainly no denying that VR tours are growing in popularity, After working with 360Vu, property auctioneer Sutton Kersh saw over 10,000 views of its virtual tours leading up to its December auction and Daisy says the technology firm is currently in talks with other Merseyside agents. “Virtual tours are not out of scope for any agent. We have developed a system that does not displace real estate agents or lettings agents but complements their work. After all nothing beats the naked eye.” Perhaps not, but taking a walk around a property from the comfort of your couch is a pretty close second.

NEWS EXTRA AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT IS COMING SOON Your Move magazine is evolving and we can’t wait to reveal all to you in a huge announcement. Since bursting onto the scene in 1999, our publication has focused on living in Liverpool and has become the most widely read magazine in the city. Over the years it has closely followed and celebrated the story of Liverpool’s ongoing renaissance as a destination to live, work and visit. It’s also grown to be available wherever and whenever you want to read it - online, across social media, directly in your inbox and,

of course, in print. In the latest stage of the magazine’s evolution we’re lining up an exciting re-brand to build on our 19 years of success, further highlighting our current and continued editorial focus on the whole of the Liverpool City Region. Our editorial and creative teams, together with the publishers, have invested months of work and research into ensuring we strengthen the magazine you love and keep up with the changing day-to-day demands and needs of our audience and supporters. As a result, we’re looking forward to unveiling an eye-catching new name and a vibrant design to bring the brand right up to date.

Move Publishing to scale new heights with Snowdon climb

Team members will take on the mountain in aid of The Whitechapel Centre

From March 2018 this refreshed look will be rolled out across our print and digital platforms, and available to view at your desktop or on your mobile devices. Alongside our ever popular interviews, standout homes, top tips for interiors, restaurant reviews and features celebrating Liverpool and everything that makes it special, there’ll also be some fantastic new content enhancing the magazine’s position as the publication for anyone living, working in and visiting the city region. Keep your eyes peeled for our next issue, out on Friday 23 February, when all will be revealed.

Staff at Move Publishing, the company behind Your Move, will scale new heights in April when they take on Wales’ highest peak – all in aid of The Whitechapel Centre. An 18-strong team from the firm is making the climb up Snowdon in support of the Liverpoolbased charity, which provides vital support to the city’s rough sleepers and those on the brink of homelessness. Move Publishing’s intrepid mountaineers will take the Llanberis Path up the 1,085-metre giant, led by Your Move magazine’s social media guru and keen rambler Matthew Smith. Matthew says: “Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and England and towers over the Snowdonia National Park. It’s a challenging climb to the summit but we’ll hopefully be rewarded with some extraordinary views. “In April the weather should be relatively favourable, but given that the mountain makes its own climate the situation can change very quickly.” The 20 April trek will take around six hours there and back, running parallel with the Snowdon Mountain Railway on a gradual ascent from start to summit. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing, adds: “Move Publishing has set its sights high for 2018 and we were looking to find a way that the whole team could come together and take on a real challenge. “The Whitechapel Centre is a wonderful charity that does so much good work in the city as well so it’s fantastic that we can support it through this.” If you would like to donate please visit Move Publishing’s JustGiving page at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/movepublishing-snowdon-team-challenge-2018. TALENT IN THE CITY AS A STAND-UP COMIC PRINCIPAL PERFORMER ON s TV SMASH ‘THE FAST SHOW’ AND MORE RECENTLY THE AGEING PROGROCKER BRIAN PERN SIMON DAY HAS BEEN A MAINSTAY OF THE BRITISH COMEDY SCENE FOR ALMOST YEARS

AHEAD OF AN APPEARANCE AT LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC HALL’S MUSIC ROOM YOUR MOVE CAUGHT UP WITH THE ACTOR WRITER AND COMEDIAN TO DISCUSS HIS BEST LOVED CHARACTERS HOW NOT TO WIN ON FRUIT MACHINES AND THE CHANCES OF A ‘FAST SHOW’ COMEBACK

“HAVING DONE BRIAN PERN ON THE BBC, THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS YOU AREN’T ALLOWED TO SAY AND I CAN SAY WHAT I WANT LIVE, WHICH IS REALLY REFRESHING.”

INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

How’s the tour been going so far? I think people are enjoying it. They’re getting four characters, which is good value, and I’m really enjoying it too. In the past I didn't so much. In the past I didn't put a lot into [stand-up] – I’d just turn up and do the material. Back when I was doing television I got to the point where I thought ‘do I really want to be going to Durham on a Thursday night when I don't have to?’. But I’ve been galvanised recently and have started to enjoy doing it more. Also, having done Brian Pern on the BBC, there are so many things you aren’t allowed to say and I can say what I want live, which is really refreshing. Out of all your old characters, what made you choose to do Billy Bleach, Brian Pern, Geoffrey Allerton and Tony Beckton for these shows? I wanted to do something a bit different and some of my characters are easier to do live than others. I do [Billy Bleach] because he’s a good compère, everybody recognises him and he looks like the type of person who would talk for ages. With Geoffrey Allerton, I like doing the poems and again it shows a different side. Tony Beckton is the hardest one because you’ve got to make him quite believable. He’s not cracking jokes, he’s talking about his life in jail but hopefully he’s funny too. I wanted to show that strange dichotomy which those types of characters have. With Brian Pern, he was on television and there are a lot of fans out there who want to see him and I thought it was a bit unfair to kill it off. Although it was only on BBC Four, a lot of people did like the character. Out of the four characters, the one people will possibly be most familiar with is Billy Bleach from ‘The Fast Show’. Where did the idea for him come from? He’s based on an amalgamation of people from my past. Back when I used to go the pub a lot, there was always one guy who was always in there; he was quite intelligent – a bit of a waste really. He’d talk about lots of different subjects; he was quite knowledgeable in some ways, opinionated, but you knew he was never going to get out of the pub.

Billy is always happy to offer his expertise to anyone trying their luck on the fruit machine in the pub – often with less than ideal results. Is it true that this bit of his character is based on you? Yes! I was that bloke. I used to go over to people and say ‘get out the way!’, and help them with the nudge and all that. I was a proper fruit machine addict. But some people didn't appreciate the help. In those days you had a set amount of time to nudge the right things down, and if you got it wrong you would lose the jackpot. So if you got it wrong and you had pushed somebody out the way and done it for them, they would be like ‘oh, cheers! Thanks for nothing’. Brian Pern, another of your most treasured characters, is an affectionate parody of singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel. Were you happy to hear he was flattered by your portrayal? Yeah it was good. I’ve always been a fan of Peter, more so than ‘Genesis’, and so was Rhys (Thomas) who I wrote [‘The Life of Rock with Brian Pern’] with. We didn't take the mickey out of him but obviously some of it was a bit silly. It was Eric Clapton who said he has to like it because if he started raving about it, he’d look like an idiot. Luckily it’s on BBC Four, so it’s not like he’s getting people coming up to him in the street saying ‘you look like Brian Pern!’. Had it been on ITV and had 20 million viewers, it might have been a bit different. Rhys came up with the idea for the character whilst watching clips of Peter online. He was doing these video blogs and he was clearly very uncomfortable talking to camera. That was what the original joke was – a guy who was doing this but he didn't really seem to be wanting to. He has the most unemotional, flat delivery. It’s that reserved English manner, which is not Keith Richards or very rock and roll but instead very introverted and quiet. Recently we’ve seen comedy programmes like ‘Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out’ and ‘The League of Gentlemen’ reappear on our screens. What are the chances of ‘The Fast Show’ making a similar comeback? Possibly. We’d like to do something live. We’ve been talking about it but who knows? When you do ‘The Fast Show’ you’ve got to get all the people together, pay them all and it becomes more complicated. Paul [Whitehouse] and I have been talking about doing something on a small scale in London. But ‘The Fast Show’ coming back as a television show? I don't know. It’s kind of dated in a way; it’s not like ‘The League of Gentlemen’ where there are plots to back it up. Who knows?

WORDS BY CHRISTINE TONER

IN JANUARY MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL JOE ANDERSON REPORTEDLY CONFIRMED THAT HOUSES WILL NO LONGER BE BUILT ON SEFTON PARK MEADOWS AND INSTEAD CALLED FOR IDEAS ON HOW THE GREEN SPACE COULD BE USED BY THE COMMUNITY SHOULD THAT VISION BE REALISED IT’LL JOIN A GROWING LIST OF COMMUNITY SPACES ENJOYED BY LIVERPOOL RESIDENTS YOUR MOVE LOOKS AT THE BENEFITS THEY BRING

Granby Winter Garden

Ecotherapy encourages the experimentation of fresh produce

Community allotments and a therapeutic space are among the suggestions so far for Sefton Park Meadows. Of course, Liverpool is no stranger to such initiatives as Elaine Cresswell, project manager of social enterprise Engage Liverpool's My City initiative, knows well. My City helps Liverpool residents make use of wasted assets via the Bluegreen Liverpool project. “Bluegreen Liverpool helps residents to transform vacant land on their street corner,” says Elaine. “We are currently working on a horticultural therapy garden with the Brink, Field to Plate and a community meeting place with the City of Liverpool College on Cornwallis Street, a healthy breakfast orchard with St Vincent de Paul school, The Baltic Green community park on Jamaica Street with Hobo Kiosk and a lunchtime parklet with Baltic Creative.” Funding for the project previously came from the National Lottery and Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme but Elaine says the organisation is currently looking for new sponsors so that it can continue its work to create a green corridor between Bold Street and the Baltic Triangle. “Our other projects include Living Libraries,” explains Elaine.

“We transform our open spaces into arboretums, unlocking the knowledge that is stored - for example through a simple tree label or QR code or a larger geocache exploration. “People can get involved by volunteering time to help with our pallet furniture making projects, gardening, cataloguing our living library or mapping their daily walk.” The benefits of such schemes are undisputed. Stephanie Chopra is a health psychologist and owner of The Life Development Coach. She says both the opportunity to work with other people and the chance to be outdoors can have

“ecotherapy (being outdoors) can significantly improve selfesteem and mood, leading to better wellbeing.”

City success stories

COMMUNITY GREEN SPACE

Granby Winter Garden

Waterloo Forest Community Garden Waterloo Community Forest Garden is an initiative set up by local residents in an effort to make use of a neglected local parkland on Somerville Road, L22. The group meets every Tuesday and Saturday at the garden and says its aim is to “create an educational nature space that can be accessed and maintained by all the local community” and “a place where we can grow food, make friends and enjoy the environment”. Philip Hughes is a volunteer at the garden and teaches bushcraft. “I don’t live in the Waterloo area but my girlfriend does and I'm always envious of how community minded the area is,” he says. “I enjoy teaching bushcraft in these two small strip woods, it's like being in a forest miles from civilisation even though we're surrounded by houses and parks.”

Rotunda Community Garden The Rotunda Community Centre in Kirkdale says its community garden was designed with local residents in order to create “a collection of top notch spaces for everyone in Kirkdale and beyond to come in and use”. The area includes theatre space for talks and performances and a secret garden especially for youngsters. As the centre houses a café for the community too there’s also a kitchen garden where food is grown for the eatery by volunteers and groups of local residents.

Few areas in Liverpool demonstrate the power of community spirit as much as Granby Four Streets. The neighbourhood underwent a remarkable renaissance thanks to the tireless campaigning and hard work of residents. The latest initiative in the area is the Granby Winter Garden - a sustainable, creative community space owned and managed by and for the local community. Consisting of two properties - one housing an urban indoor garden opening and the second combining a meeting space and a studio that can be used for creative activities - the project has been funded by Arts Council England, The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, PH Holt Foundation, The Granada Foundation, The People’s Health Trust and Veolia Environmental Trust. The garden should open by the summer after problems with the previous builder led to delays. "We are very much looking forward to the opening of the Winter Garden as this permanent addition will be a fantastic community resource for Granby and the wider area,” says Rebecca Lawlor, project manager for the Granby 4 Streets Community Land Trust. “It will complement the hard work that residents and members of the Green Blooming Triangle group do to green Granby's Streets."

“to be outdoors, to have space for our thoughts, conversations and interactions that is not based on consumer transactions is vital to our wellbeing.” a big impact on health. “There are so many benefits for everyone involved in community projects. Not only does it encourage friends and families to interact and bond with one another, it also encourages the experimentation of fresh produce. This can only have a positive impact on attitudes towards both physical and mental health. “This form of ‘ecotherapy’ (being outdoors) can significantly improve selfesteem and mood by reducing feelings of depression, leading to better mental health and wellbeing all round.” Stephanie says ecotherapy plays a key role in life coaching as it is a simple and free way to inspire personal growth. “As humans, we are intrinsically connected to nature; most obviously through the changing of the seasons. As part of my coaching with clients hoping to de-stress, I always establish a routine which involves finding some time each day to visit a green space - whether that’s sitting in the park for half an hour or visiting the countryside for a

long walk. Clients almost certainly come to their next session feeling balanced having had that time to think through their emotional states and process what nature has to offer. It is no surprise that we are effortlessly drawn to areas of natural beauty when we want to escape.” The benefits of outdoor community spaces are recognised by the team behind the We Make Places social enterprise, whose initiatives include The Friends of The Flyover project plus an array of citizen-led initiatives in communities in Liverpool and beyond; all their work is around public space or buildings and how citizens can become empowered to join the conversation and make decisions. CEO of We Make Places, Kate Stewart has recently been selected by the British Council and other partners to be one of 15 international creative producers in a threeyear programme exploring the values of play and unexpected interaction in cities across five continents. This involves engaging with artists, citizens and city leaders alike to produce creative projects that help transform conversations in their city spaces, and this week she was working on a provocation for Tokyo later in the year. “It is important that we retain public space in our towns and cities that small organisations and community groups as well as families and individuals can ‘programme’, occupy and interpret over time,” says Kate. “So much of our lives are spent working and living in buildings with poor quality light and air that the ability to be outdoors, to have space for thoughts, conversations and interactions that are not based on consumer transactions is vital to our wellbeing. “To give the community and individuals within our cities the space to just be is a true act of bravery and one that more developers and civic leaders need to embrace. So much of what we call public space has been sold as part of development deals and so this becomes contested space in which we are told how to behave or how not to behave.”

POPULAR SEEL STREET IRISH PUB CLOSES AGAIN Popular Seel Street Irish pub Pogue Mahone has closed - just four months after it relaunched. According to a post on the bar’s Twitter account, the pub’s owner Ei Group has taken back control of the venue. Local bar owner Mike Girling reopened the pub last October after the popular student haunt shut in the summer when its lease ended after 20 years. Your Move has previously reported on plans from Ei Group to turn Pogue Mahone into ‘The Ropewalk Inn’, which is described in proposals as a “purveyor of quality wines, gins, spirits and cask ales”.

PETIT CAFÉ DU COIN Berry Street, L1

FEBRUARY OPENING FOR FIKA New Swedish-inspired coffee shop Fika will open on Woolton Road in Feburary. ‘Fika’ will serve traditional Scandinavian delicacies such as cinnamon rolls, Smørrebrød (open sandwiches) and chokladbullar (chocolate balls). The name comes from Fika, a concept in Scandinavian culture meaning to have coffee and cake with friends. Anthony Grice, who is behind the new venue which will replace a former off licence near Mosspits Lane Primary School, has confirmed to Your Move that the café will launch in February.

AUTHENTIC ALEHOUSES BRAND TO REFURBISH SOUTHPORT PUB A Leeds-based pub redevelopment company has acquired the Albert Hotel in Southport. Authentic Alehouses, part of the Burning Night Group, says it has a “brilliant refurbishment” planned for the Albert, which sits opposite Southport train station. Allan Harper, director of the Burning Night Group, adds: “We are confident that this unit can become one of our flagship sites, we have some exciting things in store and look forward to celebrating the opening with the people of Southport."

I’m no wine connoisseur so the thought of reviewing a French wine café – although delicious – was daunting to say the least. Any doubts were put to ease when entering Petit Café Du Coin on Berry Street. This French venue serves up wines, cheeses, coffee and cocktails all to the smooth sounds of jazz. Warmly greeted by staff, the café oozes Parisian charm and is a perfect choice for a date or chilled evening catching up with friends. In fact, there is no snobbery or elitism at Petit Café Du Coin. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and more than happy to chat through wines to see what takes your fancy. A blackboard displays the large selection of wines on offer, while coffee, cocktails and bar snacks complete the menu. My friend and I decided on white wine and we were given a few samples of the selection. After our tasters, I went for a glass of the house white wine (La Metropole 2015) for £3.50, while my friend had a glass of Felicette Grenache Blanc 2016 (£4.50). The house white was very

REVIEW BY HANNAH FOWLER reasonably priced and was a balanced mix of fresh fruit flavours with hints of melon and pear. The Felicette, which our waiter told us was named after the only cat to have been sent into space, was one of our favourites – it had a summery taste with exotic fruits, citrus and nectarine. With its rustic interiors of dark wood and emerald green, candle-lit tables and fairy lights adorning the walls, it’s easy for the hours to pass by at this French café. Especially with the collection of board games available including chess and Scrabble. We settled in to the latter and, with a glass of wine in hand, it made for a relaxing, cosy evening. I would definitely head back on a weekend too. On Friday and Saturday nights music fills the small space with bands such as The Manouchetones - a gypsy jazz ensemble - performing live. Petit Café Du Coin offers a selection of snacks to accompany its drinks menu, from cheeseboards (£9.95) and baked camembert

(£8.95) to fresh garlic bread (£4.50). My friend and I went for the Soup du Jour mushroom soup served with fresh warm bread (£3.50). Full of rich earthy flavour, the homemade soup was proper comfort food guaranteed to warm you up on a cold evening. The crunchy ciabatta was perfect for dunking and I didn’t want the bowl to end. To finish the evening we decided to try two more white wines - the Mont Rocher Viognier 2016 (£4.50 a glass) and R Prüm Riesling 2016 (£30 a bottle). The Mont Rocher Viognier was deliciously aromatic with ripe favours of apricot and nectarine. Although a rich wine, it was still dry and refreshing. The R Prüm Riesling was much sweeter and fruitier, with fresh flavours of peaches and citrus fruits. If you’re looking for a chilled evening with great wine, delicious food and perhaps a board game or two, then look no further than this Parisian hideout on Berry Street.
