EDITOR’S LETTER It’s that time of year again - Liverpool’s universities are preparing to welcome another intake of students to start the new term. As both freshers and returning students arrive to start studying, our latest issue is packed with top tips, offers and a guide to the city’s bars, restaurants, shops and attractions. From kitting out new accommodation on a budget to finding the coolest hangouts to spend time outside of lectures, Your Move will have students settled into this vibrant city in no time. And now that Liverpool’s Clipper team has set sail, we catch up with skipper Lance Shepherd to find out what lies ahead on the gruelling expedition. Plus charity Housing People, Building Communities celebrates 15 years of helping people onto the property ladder in Liverpool through its ‘sweat equity’ initiative and discusses future plans.

NEWS HOUSEBUILDER’S INITIATIVE TO EASE BUYERS’ MOVING COSTS Home buyers could be given a helping hand onto the property ladder as developer St. Modwen Homes gets a new initiative underway.
Inside an apartment similar to those available at Kings Court, Summerhill Park
REDROW TO UNVEIL NEW SUMMERHILL PARK SHOW APARTMENT Housebuilder Redrow is set to unveil a new show apartment at the latest phase of its Summerhill Park development. Named Kings Court, the phase comprises two three-storey buildings which each contain 15 two-bedroom apartments and offer a choice of three different layouts. The new ‘C-type’ show apartment will feature a spacious kitchen, lounge and dining area as well as two-double bedrooms and a bathroom with a separate bath and shower cubicle. Prospective buyers will be able to view the two-bedroom property from 10am on 23 September. Claire Jarvis, sales director for
Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “We’re delighted to mark the start of this new phase with the show apartment opening, which gives people a chance to see inside one of the latest properties, which are ideal for first-time buyers, downsizers and buy-to-let investors.” The wider Summerhill Park development is a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes located within walking distance of Broadgreen station and situated close to the end of the M62. Apartment prices are expected to start in the region of £125,000.
The housebuilder is contributing £1,000 towards purchasers’ legal and removal fees during September to alleviate the financial pressures of moving. The initiative is available to buyers for selected plots at St. Modwen’s Radley Park development in St Helens. A landscaped garden package, flooring and fitted wardrobes to the master bedroom are also being included in the price of a range of properties at the site to enhance the affordability of home buying. Bev Hall, sales and marketing director at St. Modwen Homes, says: “At St. Modwen Homes we understand that for many people saving for a deposit is just the beginning and the cost of moving can quickly start to add up.” The selection of three and four-bedroom homes are also available through the government-backed Help to Buy scheme. For more information or to book an appointment at Radley Park’s marketing suite and show homes, call 0844 243 4504.

Land opportunities at property auction Some prime plots of Liverpool land will go under the hammer at the next Sutton Kersh property auction. The Merseyside auctioneer, which has sold more than 440 lots in 2017, is expecting plenty of property developers through the door at The Crowne Plaza on 14 September.
The Coltart Road lot has planning permission for 12 three-bedroom homes
Cathy Holt, associate director at Sutton Kersh, says: “We have raised £27 million since the start of the year and have an average of 80% success rate at auction – this is over the national average.” Alongside numerous properties, seven plots of land are also up for sale, many with planning consent for various possible developments. They include a parcel of land on Boswell Street which has full planning permission to build a three-bedroom town house with front and rear gardens. The site has a guide price of £25,000. In Woolton, a small parcel of land along Gladstone Street is also on offer and is thought to be suitable for a number of uses including a garden and off-road parking. It has a guide price of £2,000. Meanwhile a large plot of land on Coltart Road in Liverpool will also be up for grabs and comes with planning permission to build 12 three-bedroom houses. The lot has a guide price of £200,000. For more information on the auction call 0151 207 6315.

NEWS EXPERTS ON HAND AT HELP TO BUY EVENT Prospective home buyers can gain Help to Buy advice during a special event in South Liverpool this weekend.
Elan is hosting a Help to Buy event at Aigburth Grange
Elan Homes will have a host of experts on hand at its Aigburth Grange development on 9 September to assist house hunters with the government-backed scheme, which has so far helped more than 120,000 people reduce the initial cost of buying a home. Elan’s sales executives will be accompanied by representatives from Plus Dane - the North West’s Help to Buy agent - plus financial advisors from RSC New Homes at the Aigburth Road site. Marie Morris, sales director for Elan Homes in the North, says: “Help to Buy equity loans have been available for more than four years, but there’s still some uncertainty about the scheme. To help make things simple for buyers we decided to host a Help to Buy event. “It will be a real one-stop shop for people who want to use the equity loan scheme with experts on hand to answer questions, assess buyers’ finances and guide them through the purchase process.” For more information call 0845 250 8677.
GROWTH FOR HOUSEBUILDER AS DEVELOPMENTS PROGRESS Liverpool-based housebuilder Delph Estates is experiencing a period of rapid growth and expansion around the North West. The firm, which recently extended its brand beyond the estates and construction arms by opening a new Delph Interiors showroom in West Derby Village, is also said to be receiving “high” interest from homebuyers at its forthcoming Childwall development. The area’s Vicarage Gardens is due for completion at the end of the year, creating a four-bedroom and a five-bedroom home within a gated plot. The properties will boast a range of features including underfloor heating throughout, Duravit and Hansgrohe bathroom furniture and fittings, and home automation to control lighting heating, music, video, data and security. As Delph Estates also looks for further development opportunities to continue building on its success, it is also said to have “a couple of other sites in and around Liverpool under offer”. Meanwhile, the developer is looking to begin work on the residential redevelopment of two Chester barns in the coming weeks to create luxury homes. For further information contact Delph Estates on info@delphestates.co.uk.

NEWS Early demand for new Roby housing development
Stoneleigh Park is to be Forth Homes’ latest project
NEW HOUSING SCHEME LINED UP FOR CROSBY A new Crosby development has been announced by Liverpool City Region-based housebuilder Forth Homes. A Roby Nook show home will soon be unveiled
A new Roby housing development has prompted early interest from buyers as progress is made on site. Three of the six large family homes being built at the Roby Nook scheme on Station Road have already been reserved, and further demand is expected when a show home is launched. The display property for the collection of four-bedroom houses, which are situated in an electronically gated cul-de-sac, is due to be unveiled in around six weeks’ time. David Mahony of Hope Street Properties, which is behind the
project, says: “There has already been a lot of interest in the development through our agents and we’re looking forward to showing the homes off. “People are waiting to see the show home and we’re anticipating that there’ll be a lot of further interest once it has been revealed.” The Roby Nook scheme, which was initially brought to the market around four weeks ago, is due for completion by the end of 2017. The properties’ features include a choice of fitted kitchens and fully landscaped and turfed gardens. For more information call 0151 708 6544.
Stoneleigh Park will incorporate eight four-bedroom executive family homes within a private gated community and is due for completion early next year. Two designs will be available at the scheme, including two of the larger ‘Blake’ style properties and six of the ‘Milton’ house type from Forth Homes’ signature range. All of the homes will feature off-road parking, a garage and gardens along with bespoke contemporary kitchens and bathroom fittings with Porcelanosa tiles. A spokesperson for Forth Homes says: “Crosby is a popular residential area, well known for all it has to offer the modern family such as its great range of highly rated schools, a beach and waterfront, shops, bars, restaurants and local amenities.” House hunters are now being invited to register their interest in the properties, with early reservations enabling buyers to tailor some aspects of the new homes. The houses will be available through the government-backed Help to Buy initiative. For more information contact Forth Homes on 0151 909 3007.

HOUSING PEOPLE, BUILDING COMMUNITIES
LIVERPOOL-BASED CHARITY HOUSING PEOPLE BUILDING COMMUNITIES HPBC IS YEARS OLD THIS YEAR AND HAVING FINALLY COMPLETED ITS FIRST COMMUNITY-LED LOW-COST HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN GRANBY TOXTETH IS NOW LOOKING AHEAD TO FUTURE PROJECTS YOUR MOVE CAUGHT UP WITH REVEREND CANON DR SHANNON LEDBETTER FOUNDER AND CHAIR OF HPBC TO FIND OUT WHAT THE CHARITY HAS ACHIEVED – AND WHAT’S NEXT
DR SHANNON LEDBETTER founder and chair, HPBC
Can you tell us a bit about the history of the charity? We celebrated our launch in 2002 during the ‘twin beams’ one-year commemoration event for 9/11. At that time we were known as Liverpool Habitat for Humanity. The Liverpool Roman Catholic Archdiocese had generously donated 2.2 acres of land in Granby Toxteth where we proposed to build 32 homes “built by the people, for the people” in order to fulfill the charity’s vision to build good quality, affordable homes and create a diverse and loving community. Although the model of using volunteers, trainees, corporate giving and the home partners themselves to build was challenging and many thought it was “crazy”, the rewards have far outweighed the difficulties we have encountered. The story of the charity can be told through the many partners who have supported us, the Archdiocese, Liverpool City Council, local, regional and national businesses, colleges and universities, community groups, housing associations and the countless individuals from literally across the globe, who each contributed significantly to creating what is now the Housing People, Building Communities ‘family’. An integral part of our history has been those board and staff members who have been on the ground dealing with the many challenges and highlights we have faced. I am grateful to them all. We’ve also had good support from local media organisations, not least Your Move magazine, which made us the beneficiary of one of its property award ceremonies in our very early days, donating £5,000, and has continued to support us ever since. When the charity was formed in 2002, what was the primary aim? The primary aim is two-fold. Firstly, to help provide one of the most important human needs a safe and affordable home for families who otherwise would not be able to afford to purchase one of their own. Equally important is the model and ethos of bringing people from every walk of life and background to work together alongside the future homeowners, who put in their ‘sweat equity’ by helping to build their own home and those of their neighbours.
What challenges have you faced in the last 15 years? There have been many challenges, including the more conventional ones that all housebuilders face within the industry itself, i.e. the various codes and regulations, plus increasing costs of materials and subcontracted labour. However, while the greatest value is our model it is also our greatest challenge. Fifteen years ago when I was first gathering support for the project I had a lot of explaining to do - build houses with volunteers and a significant amount of donations? Many thought I was having a laugh, but the underlying principles must have intrigued people because our wide network of support meant that with each challenge we were able to access the appropriate assistance and together meet those challenges. Along with the people who will eventually live in the homes you also have many volunteers who won't be living in one of the properties. Why do you think the project resonates so much with people and makes them want to help? People are fundamentally good and want to contribute to society. Most people want to feel like they are making a difference and helping to improve the lives of others. Whether you volunteer for a day or more regularly, helping to build homes for people is a tangible way to build lives and communities. It’s also been a great way for students, graduates, apprentices, the unemployed, people with mental health issues and ex-offenders to get valuable work experience or to help them back onto their feet. How difficult is it to get materials donated? It’s a case of selling the vision. We’ve had a lot of fantastic businesses who get it immediately and want to support and partner with us, people like Wienerberger, B&Q and Wickes, for example, to name just a few. With others it is more of a challenge to explain the need and how their input can make a difference to the charity, but also to show them how positive giving back is for their business. What's next for the charity? We are in the advanced stages of planning a very exciting new project in Liverpool which we are eager to tell everyone about. We hope to be in a position to make an announcement on or close to our 15th anniversary, which is 11 September. We can't wait to welcome volunteers and other organisations and businesses, as we demonstrate once again how HPBC is building homes by and for the community. We’ll make sure Your Move readers are among the first to know.
YOUR MOVE SPOKE TO SOME OF THE GRANBY RESIDENTS TO FIND OUT HOW HOUSING PEOPLE BUILDING COMMUNITIES HAS HELPED THEM “The idea that I could use the only thing I have – my energy – as a resource, that my own ‘sweat equity’ could get me a stake in my own home, was a godsend. I work hard but have not been able to save enough for a deposit, but because of this scheme I now own my own home and have improved my life and that of my family.”
– JOYCE MSISKA social worker
“I used to rent because I couldn’t afford to buy my own home, but I found out about the special scheme where I could swap 500 hours of work on my home for £10,000, and that meant I could finally do it. Doing my ‘sweat equity’ meant I met the neighbours before I moved in and it feels like I’m part of a community.”
– PALOMA LINAZA
pharmacy manager
“When I moved to Liverpool 12 years ago to do a course and start a new career it would have been a great time to get a mortgage, but as a student I couldn’t do it. Since then Liverpool has boomed and so have the property prices. This was the best chance we had of getting a house, and we could really take ownership of our own home and neighbourhood by working together to build it.”
– KIERAN BOHAN
youth worker and freelance web designer/marketing consultant
“As soon as I started working I wanted to own a home of my own but it just wasn’t possible to save a deposit while paying rent. When I first heard of the opportunity to help build my own home it sounded like a ‘Grand Designs’ kind of dream and I never thought it would be possible, but it turns out it was. Not only do I own my own home but I helped to build it too – and I built it with my neighbours. It’s an amazing project and I’d love to see more of them around the UK.”
– HANNAH ANDERSON youth worker

TALENT IN THE CITY
INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS What is it that attracted you to this race and made you want to take part? Well it’s the biggest thing you can do as a semiprofessional sailor other than being picked for something like the Volvo Ocean Race which draws the ‘rockstar’ sailors. It's the biggest achievement you can reach as an instructor by taking a group of nonprofessional sailors around the world. I’ve sailed to most places but never joined up in a single trip so it’s exciting to be doing a full circumnavigation. How much of a challenge will it be to look after a novice crew for 11 months at sea? It will be pretty tough although the sailing side of things should be quite straightforward. We’re going to have our challenges in the Southern Ocean, the North Pacific and the adverse weather conditions, but I think the biggest challenge is going to be looking after the people. They’re from all different walks of life and different age groups, and they’ve all got different agendas around what they want to get out of the race. Living in close confides for such a long period of time there is bound to be conflict so managing that is going to be a challenge. Do you think your background in the Royal Marines will help you deal with being thrown together with a random group of people? Yes, it’s not something I haven’t done before but with [the Marines] you’ve got the military background and a kind of given authority whereas with this it’s an earned authority so you’ve got to win their confidence. At the end of the day they are effectively paying for the experience so you’ve got to deliver that experience – you can’t just tell them what to do, you’ve got to get them engaged and make them feel valued and part of the team. How did you get picked to lead the team on this once-in-a-lifetime journey? The application process is particularly rigorous. For every race, which is biennial, there are about 300 applicants who want to skipper a team. It starts by discounting those who simply don't have the qualifications or the experience. Then it moves on to a series of trials which include evaluations at sea to test your sailing ability. Eventually I was shortlisted and made it through to the final 12. What are the biggest challenges a race like this will give you? The biggest one is going to be the weather. Next it’s probably the food and water. We have to make our water as we go around because we simply can’t carry enough for 22 people over six weeks.
We have a water maker which needs managing and that produces around seven litres an hour so we really need to look after that or we’re going to run out of fresh water very quickly. After that it's the people – making sure there are no conflicts on board, managing sleep and all that sort of thing.
“ THE NORTH PACIFIC
Do you know where you may encounter bad weather or is it a case of wait and see? We already know we’re going to get a mix of good and bad weather due to when the race is taking place. The Southern Ocean, which we will pass through during three legs from Uruguay across to Cape Town and then along the bottom of Australia, is particularly notorious - that will be quite rough. Also the North Pacific is infamous for its weather with anything up to gale 10 force hurricanes possible. It really depends on what Mother Nature wants to throw at you. It's a matter of having to deal with it, get the right sail plan, manage the crew to work through that and change the watch systems so that the crew is only on deck for 20 minutes at a time because of the extreme cold and bad weather. The skipper is responsible for the boat in its entirety so that includes managing the crew and managing the route around the weather to achieve that slingshot effect off the high and low pressures.
ITS WEATHER WITH
Have you ever had to face similarly rough conditions at sea yourself? Yes, once when I was doing a delivery down to Barcelona from the UK we got caught up in a gale 10 going round Cape Trafalgar. It was a little bit scary but the boat was well found, the crew was good and we just pushed on through. Is there a chance the Liverpool 2018 team could win this? There is! We’ve got as good a chance as anybody. The skippers have been working together now for almost 12 months – cross-fertilising each other with knowledge and sailing skills. There’s not one skipper who stands head and shoulders above the rest. I’d like to win it. There’s the old adage that two boats going in the same direction is a race but I’m sure all of the skippers want to win as well as hopefully making lifelong friends and enjoying the experience of sailing around the world.

MARCO PIERRE WHITE HEADING FOR PULLMAN Marco Pierre White is due to bring a new seafood restaurant to the Pullman Liverpool hotel in November. Wheeler’s of St. James’s will be the second UK restaurant to open under the Wheeler’s brand, which was originally established in 1856. Oysters are set to be a signature of the 120-cover eatery, which will also incorporate ‘Marco twists’ into its menu such as lobster macaroni with black truffle. Pullman Liverpool opened in 2016 next to ACC Liverpool, and this restaurant partnership is said to be the first of its kind between the hotel chain and the celebrity chef ’s franchise company, Black and White Hospitality.
NEW COFFEE SHOP PLAN FOR BOLD STREET Plans have been put forward to create a coffee shop in the basement of Bold Street’s Soho’s building. According to an application to Liverpool City Council for prior approval, the proposed new addition would be a “small café selling coffee and fresh food heated paninis with a prohibition against any fried food”. Soho’s is also home to the Dig Vinyl record store as well as a clothing retailer on the ground floor.
SPOOKY BALL TO RAISE WHITECHAPEL FUNDS A freaky feast of food, drinks and entertainment will be served up in Alma De Cuba next month – all in the name of charity. Signature Living’s spectacular Halloween Ball will take place on 26 October with an aim of raising at least £50,000 for The Whitechapel Centre. Canapés and drinks are included in the £55 ticket price for the fancy dress event, for which attendees are asked to dress as an iconic celebrity. There’ll also be star guests and entertainment from a still to be named headline performer and a DJ, as well as the likes of a fortune teller and a sinister wheel of fortune. SALT DOG SLIM’S
Seel Street, L1
Having never stepped foot in popular nightspot Salt Dog Slim’s the launch of its new American-inspired hotdog and cocktail menu presented me with as good an excuse as any to finally check it out. After arriving at the Seel Street venue for our early evening date, my dining partner and I were shown to a cosy window booth and given the chance to study a menu which surely featured some of Liverpool’s most imaginatively titled items. Before we ordered, our waitress placed a handful of multi-coloured markers on our table and in keeping with the dive bar vibe encouraged us to make our mark on the graffiti-ridden wall behind us. As I wracked my brain for something remotely witty to write our waitress was back to take our orders. She suggested kicking things off with a pair of cocktails and was particularly complementary about the Castro vs Vader (£7.50) - Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum, blue liquer, lime, sugar and coke. I was sold and pleased to find my choice resembled the irresponsible older brother of the mixed slush drink you once might have sampled at the Hollywood Bowl. The taste wasn't far off either, which was good news.
REVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS My partner went for a slightly classier option with the White Cove Daiquiri (£7.50) - rum, pomegranate syrup, egg white, lime and velvet falernum. As we’d just returned from a week in Italy, the summery beverage conjured up welcome recent memories of lazy afternoons spent on the beach. Hot dog time and considering I’m a sucker for the American classic and it’s what Slim’s has become famous for, I was eager to get my hands on one. Being partial to a gimmicky name my eyes were immediately drawn to Le Big Mac (£6.50) which came with white onion, lettuce, cheese slices, cheese sauce, Big Mac sauce, chopped pickle and meat crumb. Presentation-wise the frank certainly looked the part but unfortunately the taste just wasn't there. It was a similar story with my partner’s orientalinspired Lo Pan (£7), topped with Sui Mai, Char Sui sauce, chilli and spring onion. The Sui Mai were great but again the sausage itself had more in common with the children’s party tinned variety than it really should have. Moving on and fans of the
2004 comedy ‘Anchorman’ would have appreciated my date’s next cocktail choice. Served in an authentic school milk carton, Milk Was a Bad Choice (£8.50) vodka, amaretto, Patron XO Café, milk and cream - was a real treat. After some extra assistance getting the carton open from the bar staff, my partner realised, unlike Ron Burgundy, she had in fact made the right choice and happily slurped away. Save the best till last they say, and that was certainly the case here at Slim’s with my second cocktail, Hobo Punch (£7.50) – gin, Buckfast Tonic Wine and tropical flavours. Served in a 50cl whisky bottle covered with a brown paper bag, this Um Bongo moonshine-like drink was a revelation and one I’ll definitely be heading back to try again. The cocktails really were the stars of the show at Slim’s. When it came to the hot dogs I’m afraid it was more bar snack than ballpark favourite. Don't get me wrong; I would happily wolf down several of these wieners on a night out but as an early evening main course it didn't get past first base.

Located in the heart of the quaint Woolton Village, the Art Deco cinema was built in 1927 and in 2009 was named by the Guardian as one of the best places to watch films in the country. If you really like it you can hire out Liverpool’s oldest independent cinema all for yourself and enjoy a personal screening of your favourite movie. 48 Your Move

Shenanigans - Tithebarn Street, L1
Kazimier Garden - Seel Street, L1
With the sad demise of Irish students’ favourite watering hole Pogue Mahone, Shenanigans is one of the few pubs where you can still catch all the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) action, as well as every big rugby, football and tiddlywinks match you could ever wish to see. Conveniently located a stone’s throw from LJMU’s Avril Robarts Library and several student digs, Shenanigans also happens to serve up arguably the best pint of Guinness in the city and hosts regular live music evenings. Oh and if that wasn't enough, it’ll soon have its own roof terrace – seriously, what more do you want?
When popular venue The Kazimier closed its doors in Wolstenholme Square to make way for a multi-million pound regeneration scheme many were relieved the Kazimier Garden didn’t go with it too. L1’s uber-cool garden is still going strong offering patrons an enchanting oasis in the middle of town in which to enjoy a drink, a bite to eat and plenty of quality live music. Undoubtedly one of the finest places in Liverpool to while away a summer’s afternoon, the garden’s charms are equally as potent in the winter months when the Seel Street space resembles an Alpine ski resort with roaring fires, sparkling fairy lights and goblets of mulled cider.

VINYL REVIVAL
The Blue Angel - Seel Street, L1
Keith’s Wine Bar - Lark Lane, L17.
Cult Vinyl - Grand Central Hall, Renshaw Street, L1
If you haven’t sampled a ‘Fat Frog’ or woke up to find your brand new trainers stewing in a thick coating of ‘Raz juice’ then are you really even a student? We’re not too sure. Venture down to this legendary Seel Street venue on a Monday night for bargain drinks and some seriously cheesy tunes.
The Baltic Triangle may have emerged in recent years as the city’s hippest neighbourhood but Aigburth’s own slice of Camden is not to be overlooked. Lark Lane remains the beating heart of Liverpool’s bohemian community and nowhere is its punk spirit more evident than in Keith’s Wine Bar. It might be in need of a lick of paint here and there but Keith’s rugged appearance just adds to the charm of a bar where you can be sure to find a great atmosphere any night of the week.
INTERESTING FACT The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones are all said to have played at the bar in the 1960s.
> FO O D IE FAV O UR ITE <
STATE OF GRACE Free State Kitchen - Maryland Street, L1 A food and drink gem that’s handily positioned for hungry students - you can almost taste Free State Kitchen’s authentic American burgers from the Knowledge Quarter’s libraries and lecture theatres. Alongside Parr Street’s Almost Famous, Free State was part of the new wave of American-inspired diners to hit the city in recent years and it’s still a highlight. Not just an awesome restaurant; head out the back of this former convent in the summer months to find another of the city centre’s coolest beer gardens.
Nevermind picking up your favourite band’s latest record during your weekly shop at Sainsbury’s, LP buying deserves to be given your total, undivided attention. Navigate the myriad of shops and staircases at Grand Central Hall and you’ll find Cult Vinyl, one of the few record shops in the city centre still stocking quality second hand plastic. It’s a treasure trove for any vinyl enthusiast with a healthy mix of rarities and classics no collection should be without.
Some of the city’s most famous sons have been known to frequent this Bold Street boutique including The Zutons and The Coral.

FASHION PARADE Resurrection - Bold Street, L1 A genuine Liverpool independent success story, Resurrection was founded in 1991 and after a couple of venue changes, has managed to establish itself as the city’s premier streetwear fashion store for men and women – all without losing a shred of its quirky individuality. Resurrection boasts a product range which features well-known brands like Vans, Carhatt and Sugarhill Boutique, but if that’s not your bag then spend hours browsing through rack after rack of quality vintage wears. Some of the city’s most famous sons have been known to frequent this two-storey Bold Street boutique including The Zutons and The Coral. Rumour has it that even Hollywood royalty Samuel L. Jackson stopped by on one occasion for a new Kangol flat cap.
IT’S ROAS TED 92 Degrees Coffee - Hardman Street, L1 Positioned slap-bang in the middle of Liverpool’s burgeoning Knowledge Quarter is the city’s self-proclaimed first roastery and coffee shop. Named after what its owners believe is the best temperature to begin coffee extraction, 92 Degrees is the ideal retreat for any bushed out student searching for a high-class caffeine kick and a chilled out space to finally finish that stubborn essay.

Break the ice
STARTING YOUR FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES IN LIVERPOOL CAN BE A DAUNTING TIME PARTICULARLY IF YOU’VE MOVED AWAY FROM YOUR HOMETOWN AND ITS FAMILIAR FACES FEAR NOT THOUGH AS WITH THE HELP OF THE CITY’S JUNGLE RUMBLE LEISURE ATTRACTION WE PROVIDE SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU SETTLE IN QUICKLY AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS
Explore the city
All join in
Feeling lost? Well you definitely won’t be the only one! Thanks to Liverpool’s vibrant selection of shops, food and drink destinations, cultural sights and hidden gems though, finding your way around the city can easily become part of the fun of your new student life. Tucked half way up a staircase in the Liverpool ONE leisure and retail complex, Jungle Rumble is one of the city centre’s best kept – and certainly most entertaining – secrets and if you grab a bunch of fellow newcomers to seek it out, you’ll also be surrounded by plenty of other Liverpool hotspots which are worth getting to know. Not only located amongst some of the most popular food and retail brands, Jungle Rumble is also a stone’s throw from the iconic, culturepacked Albert Dock and not far from the thriving Ropewalks district which is brimming with independent bars and shops.
From new housemates to sports team sidekicks and those who have chosen a similar academic path, you’re certain to come across a lot of new people and potential friends during your first weeks at university. Taking part in a group activity can be a great way to alleviate the pressures of trying to fit in with a new circle of people as it’ll naturally get the conversation flowing and give everyone something to focus on together. From 18-hole adventure golf courses which are livened up with special effects and volcanoes, to mini bowling, basketball machines, pool and foosball, Jungle Rumble has a variety of fun games and activities for groups both big and small. With plenty of offers thrown into the mix too, they won’t break the bank.
Healthy competition
Go for a drink
Whether you’re a whizz at arcade games or a point-scoring pro at hands-on activities, a bit of friendly competition is sure to break the ice and bring cause for celebratory – or commiseration – drinks and partying long after the games are over. Jungle Rumble’s attractions are ideal for showcasing your skills to new friends, or having a laugh at your lack of them, as its mix of activities is purely focused on fun for all rather than seriously going head to head.
As ways of getting to know one another go, that age-old option of hitting the bar and grabbing a drink is one of the simplest and best. Whether you’re a beer fan, a budding cocktail connoisseur or you prefer to stick to the soft drinks you’ve certainly picked the right city as Liverpool has a rich offering of watering holes. The bar in Jungle Rumble, for one, will tick all boxes for the most diverse of student groups as it comes fully stocked and also incorporates a cocktail menu.
