iverpool has long been recognised for its strong musical heritage, as the birthplace of the iconic Beatles and the stomping ground for many other successful acts. The city also confirmed its place as a European Capital of Culture back in 2008, and has been noted for being the country’s most filmed city outside of London. It’s therefore unsurprising that with such a vibrant history, many homes in the area have become landmarks in their own right over the years. We take a look at some of the most famous properties on Liverpool’s streets.

It’s no wonder then, that in February 2012 both houses were Grade II listed in recognition of their historic associations and, under the management of the National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk), are preserved and regularly visited for tours by Beatles fans. The childhood homes of bandmates Ringo Starr, on Admiral Grove, and George Harrison, on Arnold Grove, also draw interest but remain private houses.

the Beatles’ childhood homes ‘Mendips’ at 251 Menlove Avenue and 20 Forthlin Road were once the childhood homes of Beatles legends John Lennon and Paul McCartney respectively. It was at these, now famous, Liverpool addresses where John and Paul started planning their path to superstardom. John lived at Mendips with his Aunt Mimi from the age of five to 22 (1945-1963), and during this time developed a passion for playing the guitar. From the entrance, where the porch was enclosed by John’s aunt so that she wouldn’t be disturbed by music, there are hints to how the iconic band practiced

the hardmans’ house Number 59 Rodney Street not only offers a window into what inspired its former resident, the renowned portrait photographer Edward Chambre Hardman, but it’s also a blast back to the post-war era of the 1950s. Now a National Trustowned attraction, the house is preserved and remains filled with the character and clutter belonging to the Irishborn former resident and his wife Margaret. The decor and the many possessions left behind in their home give an insight into the fashions of the time too. The Georgian property, which is of significant interest and a well-known fixture on Liverpool’s tourist

trail, was occupied by the couple for 40 years and combined their living quarters with their business space and photographic studio. It’s also said by the National Trust to be the only known example of a 20th century photographic studio intact. Edward, who aside from his main portrait business also enjoyed landscape photography, produced one of his most famous photographs, The Birth of the Ark Royal, in the darkroom of the house. The property is also a hive of original photographs by Edward, with hints of his links to other well-known Liverpool destinations such as the Playhouse theatre.

Long serving character Jimmy Corkhill was the last to leave the close when the show ended.

Brookside Close During the Eighties and Nineties, Brookside Close was one of the most famous cul-de-sacs in the country, let alone Liverpool, as it was home to the ground-breaking Channel 4 soap opera Brookside. The show by Phil Redmond, which first

frank hornby’s house A Blue Plaque, the first to be awarded to a building outside of London no less, sits firmly above the door of ‘The Hollies’ in Maghull. It’s hailed as a home of historic significance thanks to its former resident Frank Hornby, the founder and creator of the much-loved Meccano, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys. The inventor, businessman and politician, who was born in Liverpool, made The Hollies on Station Road his first Maghull home, before later moving to a larger house nearby known as ‘Quarry Brook’ which was his last residence before

he died in 1936. The Hollies remains a private residential property, but forms part of the history of Maghull’s most famous resident, who achieved global success as Meccano Ltd became the biggest toy manufacturer in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s and branched out with bases around Europe, the USA and Argentina. Frank’s life in Maghull and beyond was particularly put under the spotlight earlier this year, as the 150th anniversary of his birth was celebrated.

It also propelled some of its stars to further success beyond the close, with the likes of Jennifer Ellison, Sue Johnstone, Ricky Tomlinson, and Anna Friel still enjoying careers on stage and television long after the programme was cancelled back in 2003. The street at the centre of all the drama, which is actually located in West Derby, has since been given a new lease of life after its 13 vacant properties were sold to an anonymous purchaser at auction in 2008. They were revamped and unveiled a few years later as homes that were ready for new residents to set up home on Brookside Close off-screen.

Most agents have a minimum tie in period so you will have to make sure that you have surpassed the imposed amount of time. A lot of agents then ask for notice in writing when a client wants to terminate a contract, for example we personally ask for two weeks. The notice covers any outstanding viewings or details sent so the agent can be sure to follow up on any potential leads. However, depending on circumstances some agents may just release a client. Most agents operate on a sole agency basis, therefore if you instruct another estate agent without notifying your current agent then you will more than likely be liable to pay two fees. Some will also have a small withdrawal charge if a client withdraws in the initial period, which is usually protection against time wasters.

Buying your first HMO should not be taken likely. There is lots to consider including planning, licensing, and other regulation and legislation. Councils throughout the country are different and interpret central government’s guidance differently so I would consult your local council and establish what their qualifying criteria for a HMO and a licensable HMO is. Generally though, if the property has five or more tenants who are unrelated forming two or more households, and is over three or more floors then you will need to apply for a HMO license from the council which can cost circa £500 for three years. However, if your property is accredited with the local council’s accreditation scheme you may qualify for a discount. If your property has less than five tenants and is on two floors it can still be classed as a HMO but will not need a license. Some larger properties (more than six bedrooms) will need to apply for planning permission to operate as a HMO and this will be in addition to HMO licensing if applicable.

If you wish to proceed, sign the agent’s T&Cs and pay the entry fee so they can commence marketing immediately on their website and in newspapers etc. You will need a solicitor to prepare the necessary legal pack and if you don’t have one the agents can recommend one for you. Offers are often made prior to auction and the auctioneer will advise whether to sell or proceed to auction if they feel they can achieve more. If you do sell prior, the time scale is even sooner than waiting for the auction and quicker. There is always a closing date for an auction, which is normally four weeks prior.

Sales growth for Liverpool agent Move Residential has reported a 51% increase in sales in the first eight months of 2013, claiming it has taken advantage of buoyant market conditions.

The company has sold 848 houses in the first eight months of 2013 compared to 557 in the same period in 2012 and 440 in 2011, putting it on course for a third year of growth. The increase in house sales compares favourably to national figures showing mortgage

properties Generate more than £4.5m at auCtion The latest Sutton Kersh auction has been hailed a success after generating more than £4.5 million. Potential buyers flocked to Liverpool’s Marriott Hotel, where 72 (71%) of the 102 properties going under the hammer were sold. Several lots exceeded expectations including a double fronted detached Swiss Road property, divided into two semi-detached houses, which had a guide price of £70,000 but sold for £102,000. Prescot’s former Citizen’s Advice Bureau also beat its £80,000 guide price, selling for £132,500. Other highlights included an apartment within a Grade II listed building in Falkner Square, which had a guide price of £130,000 and sold for £160,000.

Cathy Holt, auction manageress at Sutton Kersh, says: “This was another excellent performance which builds on the success of previous auctions. There is also plenty of post sale activity so the final figure is likely to be even better. “We saw a large cross section of buyers, including investors and owner occupiers. There were also a number of new faces, and people from out of the area, who clearly see Liverpool as an attractive place to invest.” Sutton Kersh has now sold almost 450 properties this year, generating nearly £30 million. Its next sale will take place on 17 October, with the catalogue closing on 20 September.

Since the launch of the government-backed Help to Buy initiative over 12,500 buyers have made reservations on new homes. A second phase of the scheme will be introduced in January 2014 to benefit an even wider range of buyers, but what are the two phases and why is Help to Buy so popular?

help to Buy first phase Under the first part of the Help to Buy scheme the government provides a loan covering 20% of the deposit on homes under £600,000. This allows buyers who are looking at a 75% mortgage to pay just 5% deposit on a new build home. Over 12,500 buyers have now been convinced by the initiative, according to government figures. One developer that has been encouraging new buyers to enter the market through Help to Buy is Helena Partnerships. Helen Reddington, new initiatives manager at Helena Partnerships, says: “Whether you are a first time buyer or looking for your next home, Help to Buy makes home ownership more affordable by getting you moving with only a 5% deposit and a 75% mortgage, allowing purchasers to benefit from some of the best mortgage deals available.”

The government loan is interest-free for five years but from year six will rise by RPI inflation plus 1%. Typically the loan can be repaid at any point during the following 25 years or upon the sale of the property under the first stage of the Help to Buy scheme.

help to Buy second phase What about buyers who do not want to buy a new build? The government will launch an option for second-hand homes in January 2014 that will run for three years. Named the Mortgage Guarantee scheme, it means the government will encourage mortgage lending by underwriting some of the mortgage offered by banks. This will reduce the risk faced by banks and give buyers more mortgage options. Claire Jarvis, sales director, Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “It should mean that lenders are prepared to offer mortgages at up

to 95% of loan to value at more competitive interest rates, as the government will be underwriting part of the loan. This particular scheme will be available on second hand properties as well as new-builds.” The inclusion of second hand properties up to the value of £600,000 means buyers of new build homes will not be the only people who will benefit from the ambitious Help to Buy scheme and developers are convinced the scheme will help ensure there is more choice and more affordable options for home buyers. Peter Vella, sales and marketing director, Countryside Properties, says: “It is all about affordability. When every penny really does count, this scheme gives buyers a chance to get on the property ladder with a mortgage they can actually afford. What do you like most about your job? The diversity of the job. Dealing with different people and their varying requirements on a daily basis presents challenges which I enjoy immensely. What’s your least favourite thing about your job? Obviously when a sale falls apart and leaves all the parties involved upset and disappointed is the worst part, the disappointment is felt by everybody. after the runaway success of his debut track, ‘from nowhere’, and his next, ‘compliment your soul’, liverpool-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist dan croll is back again with the release of new single ‘in/out’. We talked to him about his musical influences, getting played on radio one, and jamming with sir paul mccartney.

Your new single, In/Out, launched this month. Are you pleased with the reaction? My hopes have already been met with the new single. I wanted a gradual improvement over the last singles and I wanted more people enjoying it and that seems to be happening with YouTube and SoundCloud plays since we released it online. The song started with Dustin Wong, who is an incredible solo artist. He creates guitar orchestral pieces and he let me have a sample of his songs to use for the new single. I picked my favourite and rearranged it with my own style, which is J-Pop, tropical and quite fast-paced. It’s a nightmare for a guitarist to play! You’ve really embraced the digital side of things haven’t you? It is not the traditional route but as a solo artist you have to adapt quickly. The music industry is ever-changing and I wasn’t a fan of digital at first but I slowly started to see the benefits and I’ve warmed to it now. The main positive is exposure. You can send your music and video out to as many people as possible and that side of things has been helpful to me. The downside is I don’t make money off it. A lot of people stream music on Spotify but I was paid £2.14 for four or five months of streaming – that’s not

even enough to pay for a Spotify subscription! What was it like to see your single, Compliment Your Soul, do so well? It was incredible. None of us had planned it to be as successful as it was when I was writing it but I knew it was good. It was slightly poppy but had a different feel to it as well. I was hoping it would be played on Radio One and it was. It was also played on 6 Music and not only helped to launch me but also Joe Wills as a talented producer. We toured America in March and it was fantastic. There were some really good satellite radio stations that were really supportive and we got an incredible reaction. Tickets are selling well again so it’s been a great experience. How would you describe your music? I suppose it could be described as a mix-tape with a lot of influences that are completely different to my music. I listened to all sorts of music like metal and punk and it all goes into the mixing pot when I am writing a song. The music depends on what I am listening to at the time and the people around me when I write it. I’m incredibly happy with Radio One (playing the song) because as a station it’s very close to my heart. I didn’t expect to hear myself on there so it was a bizarre. But the amount of Tweets and people on Facebook telling me they were listening to it in their car was great. How has your experience at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) helped you? LIPA has helped me in a way because it gave me the tools to set up on my own. Upon leaving LIPA I was very much on my own but I had the lessons in music law and marketing. I am now

strong on my own and can stand on my own two feet as a recording artist. The most important thing about LIPA was the people who were there. There were 28 of us collaborating with each other and we’re all doing really well. It is nice to think we all influenced each other during our time there. Did you meet Sir Paul McCartney? I met Sir Paul McCartney for around 45 minutes and I played him a couple of my songs – Home and Marion. He loved them and we jammed for a while. It was bizarre, a pinch yourself moment. I had a lot of jealous family and friends after that! Why did you choose to hold a song launch party in Liverpool? I still live in Liverpool and it is very much my home. It is where my friends are and it is a great place to be. It is not claustrophobic like London and there is a strong network here. It is a good place to release my single – it really is a beautiful city. I spend most of my weekends at Camp and Furnace and I’m just about to head to the bakery next door. It’s (the Baltic Triangle) a developing area and one where there is a lot going on at the moment. What’s next? An album is on the cards and I’m just getting the mixes back now. Hopefully it will be ready at the start of the new year. I’m hoping to release one more single before Christmas and I’ll be touring. I want to release the album and I want it to be well received but I’m very content at the moment. Things are exactly how I would want them to be and I’m particularly looking forward to travelling to the US again.

Vintage Fair MARKS ANNIVERSARY Bold Street

A celebration of all things vintage will take place in the city, as the South Liverpool Vintage Fair marks its first year of success. Organiser Laura Kelly launched the regular event at All Hallows Parish Church Hall in Mossley Hill last September, having been inspired by her antique dealing mother Sandy. Arranging five fairs throughout the year whilst juggling her day to day work, Laura says the current craze of vintage wares has helped her event grow. “Vintage is so popular now and it’s just gone crazy,” she says. “The event has gone from strength to strength and I’m fully booked for the next one.” Since the South Liverpool Vintage Fair began, the number of stalls is now reaching the maximum 30 and around 300 to 400 people are said to walk through the door throughout each time, travelling from as far as Birmingham and Manchester.

Liverpool city centre will welcome the world to one street on 29 September, with a host of show-stopping ‘cultural fusion’ performances. The One World Festival Liverpool will take place on Bold Street, staging artists at either end of the street as well as walkabouts and impromptu performances from 11.30am until 6.30pm. Artists on the day will include Black Eagles, a group of Tanzanian acrobats; Cafe con Leche, a Latin/Cuban Ensemble; Big Wow, a Liverpool/Australian group with an angelic performance; Japanese Troupe

dancers; the La Bomba women’s drum troupe; Cusan Theatre Company, bringing children’s Columbian theatre performances; and Flamenco Liverpool. In addition to the line-up, performers from the city’s Irish, Chinese, Caribbean and West African communities will participate in the day’s festivities. Organised by Global Diversity Partners in partnership with OLC Productions and supported by City Central BID and Bold Street Traders, the free event will also offer promotions from many of Bold Street’s internationally influenced stores. free state kitchen Maryland Street, L1 9DE I would like to say that I entered Free State Kitchen (FSK) with an unbiased view of the place, however, this has been trickier than you’d imagine. For months now, friends have been raving to me about FSK and I have often found myself procrastinating at my desk reading one of their many mouth-watering reviews. Free State Kitchen is hidden just off Hope Street on Maryland Street (Maryland being known as the Free State, hence the name). From outside it looks rather unassuming, however, on entering the restaurant it is wonderfully light with large windows that look out onto their impressive beer garden. The garden is also the venue for their soon-to-be legendary pie eating competitions. The restaurant has a fresh and simple décor, which gives it a subtle and stylish, authentic American feel. My dinner date and I were seated at a great table next to one of the large windows; this allowed us to admire the fantastic outdoor garden area and the rustic vegetable

patch that’s situated within it. FSK has a friendly and casual ambience, as it attracts a wide variety of diners and children are very welcome. The customer service at FSK is excellent. The waiter advised my dinner date on the cocktails, which are a very reasonable £5, and myself on the unfamiliar American beers. It was then time to order. The menu is made up of classic American dishes with an interesting, contemporary twist, however, FSK make sure that they source their produce a lot closer to home and use local suppliers in the Merseyside area to produce the dishes. The menu has vegetarian options and the restaurant promises to cater for all diners’ needs. My dining partner and I shared two starters. The Buffalo Hot Wings, marinated in a spicy buttermilk marinade and served with a blue cheese dip (£4.50) were very tasty and the blue cheese was great for cooling the spice down. We then had the Maryland Crab Cakes

(£4.50), which were light and fresh and allowed lots of room for our mains. For the main course I opted for The Scooch (£8.50), ‘Baltimore’s No.1 sammy’, which is sandwich to you and me. The Scooch consists of tasty Italian deli meats, Prima Donna Cheese, hot sweet peppers, roasted red pepper, olive oil and balsamic on a griddle ciabatta roll. The sandwich was delicious and the fillings really complemented each other. All meals are served with fries and a generous sized jar of pickles. My dinner date decided to go for FSK’s American Cheeseburger (£7). The burger was cooked to perfection and the tender meat seemed to melt in the mouth. We managed to leave some room to share a Peanut Butter Sundae (£5.50), which concluded a fantastic meal and a great evening. Whether you’re after a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great food with friends or looking to enter a pie eating competition, Free State Kitchen is the place to go. Your Move 85

isitors to Sefton Park didn’t let the rain showers wash away their appetite, as the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival dished up a feast of treats. Around 40,000 foodies of all ages headed to the twoday event, where bars, restaurants, venues and cafes from across the city showcased their culinary offerings. There were also guest appearances and cookery demonstrations from the likes of Reggae Reggae Sauce creator Levi Roots, and TV chefs Gizzi Erskine and Shelina Permaloos. Meanwhile live music performances, the Heavenly Chocolate Garden, and a show by Stefan Gates teaching the public more about eating insects, while also serving samples such as smokey bacon mealworms, were popular attractions at this year’s festival.
