Return to MSB for experienced property duo Melissa and Darren
Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors’ commercial property department is helping to drive forward Liverpool’s fast-paced regeneration and the team has now been strengthened further with two new hirings. Melissa Bosoboe and Darren Barwick join a team that is playing a pivotal role in projects such as Signature Living’s Dixie Dean Hotel and multimillion pound residential schemes in Liverpool’s historic Water Street. It is a return to MSB for Melissa, who was an
assistant solicitor at the firm from 2010 to 2014. She re-joins from Quality Solicitors David Roberts & Co in New Brighton. She comes with a strong track record in the property sector and has acted on acquisitions and disposals for a varied range of clients and on projects including residential, light industrial, offices, retail, pubs and car parks and worked on the One Park West development in Liverpool for Grosvenor. Melissa is a member of the Batala Mersey Brazilian-style percussion band and her other interests include competitive volleyball, ballroom dancing and yoga. She said: “I have extensive experience in the commercial property market and I am passionate about service delivery.” Another experienced property law professional, Darren, also previously worked as a property associate solicitor as MSB from 2010 to 2014 and joins from Wirral-based David Roberts & Co. He has acted on all aspects of property law including acquisitions and disposals, commercial

leases and property development as well as acting for institutional lenders and borrowers. Again, similar to Melissa, he also worked on Grosvenor’s One Park West residential scheme. Darren, who enjoys running cycling, snowboarding and scuba diving, said: “I have strong commercial awareness and I am able to offer pragmatic and effective solutions to problems.” Managing partner at MSB, Emma Carey, says the dual appointment was a strategic decision for the firm. Picturesque and with its original character preserved, Wirral’s model industrial village of Port Sunlight offers a quaint lifestyle just a short drive away from the heart of Liverpool city centre.
Popular green spaces, thriving community spirit and character-filled homes, coupled with close proximity to the city centre and some of Liverpool’s most prominent landmarks – surely Toxteth’s Princes Park area has it all!
It takes an estimated 14 minutes to travel via the Queensway Tunnel from the historic destination to James Street – a bustling central Liverpool spot ideally located for the business district, iconic waterfront and evergrowing restaurant hub of Castle Street – meaning you can easily enjoy the best of both worlds. Founded in 1888 by William Hesketh Lever after it was built to house the workers of the nearby Lever Brothers ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory, which later became Unilever, the 130-year-old village incorporates Arts and Crafts Movement design and many of its homes are now Grade II-listed. A haven for lovers of period property, the area is looked after by the Port Sunlight Village Trust which is responsible for conserving its heritage and assists residents on making alterations and improvements in keeping with the Conservation Area. Port Sunlight isn’t without its own cultural attractions and community activities either. National Museums Liverpool’s Lady Lever Art Gallery, which boasts renowned collections of Wedgwood jasperware and PreRaphaelite paintings, is based there along with the award-winning Port Sunlight Museum which delves into the history of the village and is set amongst stunning grounds.
The Grade II*-listed historic park itself is a hive of activity for visitors and local residents alike, with its fishing lake, tennis courts and weekly 5K Park Run; plus it provides an easy route through to the jewel in Liverpool’s green space crown and major city event space that is Sefton Park. It sits at the bottom of Princes Avenue – a main vein into central Liverpool from southern areas of the city which has renowned residential areas and key housing developments on either side. The Welsh Streets area, for one, is currently the subject of a major regeneration project with PlaceFirst breathing new life into derelict Victorian houses to create new rental homes. On the opposite side of Princes Avenue lies the Granby Four Streets, which enhanced Liverpool’s position as an art hotspot in 2015 when it attracted the prestigious Turner Prize. Architect practice Assemble’s contribution to the transformation of the area, in collaboration with local residents, was recognised with the award. Now a Granby Winter Garden which formed part of Assemble’s vision plays host to community events such as workshops, and a regular Granby Four Streets Community Market fills the streets with artisan traders. It’s a thriving part of the city which sits just a 14-minute bike ride away from the central retail and leisure complex Liverpool ONE.

Looking to balance the buzz of a major city with sea, sand and some outdoor adventure? It’s perfectly possible if you set up home in Waterloo.
Liverpool’s Islington area is being revitalised to become the Fabric District as part of an ambitious mixed-use vision which pays homage to the area’s historic textile heritage.
The Sefton town is just a 15-minute journey along Merseyrail’s Northern Line to Liverpool’s Moorfields train station in the central business district. Previously known as Crosby Seabank before taking its name from the 1815 battle, the area marks the start of Crosby Coastal Park which stretches all the way to Hightown. The park is home to the now iconic ‘Another Place’ installation by Anthony Gormley as well as the Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, where visitors can truly make the most of the waterfront location by trying their hand at water sports. An abundance of charming, character-filled homes are available in the area and have a wealth of amenities close by for when even the 15-minute commute into the city is too far. Step out of the train station and South Road is a hub of restaurants serving cuisines from around the world, alongside bars, pubs and shops.
As the area is transformed it’s certainly one to watch for house hunters, particularly students and young professionals. Just an estimated eight-minute walk away from Liverpool city centre’s key Lime Street Station transport hub, the district forms part of the city’s growing multi-billion pound Knowledge Quarter and is therefore on the doorstep of university campuses as well as the Royal Liverpool Hospital and centres of innovation like Sensor City. The area is already home to student accommodation complexes, with further developments underway or in the pipeline including One Islington Plaza. At the end of 2017 developer YPG was also given the green light to build three new seven to 10-storey blocks of apartments and a commercial space for young skilled workers and students. Cultural venues have also been emerging in the area, including ‘craft, work and play’ space The Tapestry, as well as London Road’s new bar and live music and DJ venue The Reeds. YM Liverpool

Despite being one of just six people ever able to call themselves a ‘Beatle’, Pete Best is probably best known as the unluckiest man in music history. After his dismissal as the band’s drummer on the cusp of ‘Beatlemania’, Pete took his own route in show business – a path which has now led him onto the theatre stage for the first time. Ahead of his appearance in a play which follows a quest to find John Lennon’s priceless banjo, we caught up with him to talk about the show, life after the ‘Fab Four’ and owning a Penny Lane fruit and veg shop.

“Regardless of what happened, you’ve got to be proud of the fact that you can call yourself a Beatle.” How did you get involved with ‘Lennon’s Banjo’? You’ve never done any serious acting before have you? A couple of years ago I was sent a novel called ‘Julia’s Banjo’ by Rob Fennah or Helen A. Jones, one of the two who co-wrote the book. I read it and thought ‘that’s a nice little story that’. It’s factual, humorous, and all the other bits and pieces. Anyway, one day I was in town and I bumped into Rob and I told him I’d be interested in doing a cameo if they ever did anything stagewise with the book. He basically turned around and started laughing but I was serious! Low and behold, sometime later Rob got in touch with my manager and asked if I would be interested in a cameo role in the play. It’s going to be me playing me, whichever way they want me to come across. I’ve got lines. It’s not just a case of walking on and saying hello and walking off again. I’m adding to the play itself.
Did you feel a sense of redemption when ‘Anthology 1’ (compilation of Beatles’ rarities, ou akes and live performances released in 1995) came out because it included 10 recordings which you played on? It came completely out of the blue. I knew ‘Anthology’ was coming out but I didn’t pay too much attention to it because I never figured that they would include me on it. But then I got the offer from Apple and low and behold, I ended up on 10 tracks which was great. As you say, after all these years it was a bit like ‘I must have been fairly important to get 10 tracks out of 60’. The bulk of the royalties came through when it was released and it was the icing on the cake after so many years. They keep drib drabbing in but you move onto another project like the play, which is a totally new experience for me.
Do you think the banjo is still out there, waiting to be found? I’m certain it’s out there somewhere - that’s the incredible thing about it. Wherever it might be god only knows, but it’s out there somewhere.
One of those 10 tracks included on ‘Anthology’ was the first recording of ‘Love Me Do’. It must still mean something to have been involved in some way with The Beatles’ first single, and one of their most famous songs. It does. Especially because that particular version was never finished, it was the version which we performed for George Martin on 6 June 1962 (The Beatles’ first visit to Abbey Road Studios). After we played it for George, it was very much a case of ‘fine, leave it with me, and when we come back we’ll decide on the final touches’. For me, it was incredible to see it on ‘Anthology’ because it was the first time I’d heard it in over 30 years or so. It was a blast from the past!
Looking back at your departure from The Beatles in 1962, were you ever given a reason for being let go? To this day, hand on heart, I don’t know the actual reason why. There are plenty of people out there today who are more concerned with why or how I left The Beatles than I am. It happened nearly 60 years ago and my life has progressed the way that it has done in show business, and I’m happy. That’s the beauty of it. I’m not reflecting back on it all the time – I’ve got my own band and I do performances around the world. I’m a busy guy and I love it.
You stopped drumming not long a er leaving the band and only started performing again in the late 1980s. What made you pick up the sticks again a er so many years? I quit show businesses to raise my family. In 1988 I was persuaded to do a performance at a Beatles convention in Liverpool. I’d been refusing offers for years but this particular time they got me into a corner, and I said ‘okay I’ll do it!’. I got my younger brother Roag in to play drums alongside me and we played some good old rock and roll – it wasn’t going to be
Before you read the book, had you ever heard about John Lennon’s banjo? I’d heard about John’s banjo, or Julia’s banjo as it was, ever since I first got to know John but I’d forgotten about the instrument until I saw this book. Julia taught him to play a couple of chords on it and from there he emanated, like most of the musos in Liverpool at that time, towards the guitar and the skiffle craze.

It went really well and at the end of the night my mum came up to me and said ‘Pete, you don’t know it but you’re going back into show businesses’. I laughed because I thought it was just a one-off but how right she was – here I am still treading the boards today. Despite all that went on with The Beatles, and you saying it’s a part of your life which is over now, do you still feel a certain sense of pride that you’re one of only six people who can or have ever been able to say, ‘I was a Beatle’? Oh very much so. A lot of people have called my contribution to the band ‘the spadework’ which they emanated from. So yeah, regardless of what happened, you’ve got to be proud of the fact that you can call yourself a Beatle or an ex-Beatle. Finally, is it true that you used to own a fruit and veg shop on Penny Lane? No, but a lot people seem to think I did! A tour guide even said on the radio that I used to have one. There was a fruit and veg shop on Penny Lane but it wasn't mine. I’ve no idea where the rumour came from. I’ve done most things in my time but running a fruit and veg shop is not one of them!

HOW TO SELL YOUR HOME QUICKLY In an ideal world you’ll put your house on the market and it’ll be snapped up by the perfect buyer within days. Unfortunately, however, that’s not always the case. Sometimes properties can linger on the market for much longer than you’d like. If you’re keen to sell your home fast, we’ve enlisted the expertise of Naz Islam from online agent Residential4U to bring you some top tips. Get the photos right
Make use of your expertise
The vast majority of buyers start their property search online, trawling through photos on property portals in their quest to find their dream home. If the photos of your home aren’t up to scratch, those buyers are unlikely to arrange a viewing - meaning your home may languish on the market for months. “Photos on property portals will be potential buyers’ first opportunity to view your home,” says Naz. “If those photos don’t do it justice you risk losing a buyer who might otherwise have fallen in love with the property.”
Think about how your property is being presented to buyers during viewings. Does it make more sense for you to show buyers around, rather than an agent? “Nobody knows your property better than you,” says Naz. “It makes sense, therefore, that you would show potential buyers around your home. By doing so you’ll also save yourself a hefty amount. “Using an online agent, you’ll pay an upfront fee rather than a commission and will manage viewings yourself.”
Choose a proactive agent A good estate agent can mean the difference between a quick sale at asking price and a property failing to sell.
“Choose an agent who will market your home effectively,” says Naz. “Find out where they will list your property and how they will guarantee maximum exposure.”
Make sure the asking price is right When it comes to setting the price of your property, it’s essential that you get it right. Set it too high and you’ll alienate a lot of borrowers. Set it too low and you lose your bargaining power. If you want a quick sale, the price needs to make sense to buyers. “It’s a good idea to get a valuation from three separate agents before setting your price,” says Naz. “You should also research the local market and find out what similar properties have sold for.”
Be responsive to potential buyers' requests If you want to sell your home quickly, you need to be ready and willing to hurry things along. “Make sure you’re responsive to enquiries,” says Naz. “Your agent should be able to contact you easily and if a buyer wants to view the property, work around their timings. “Furthermore, be sure to have the answers to any buyer questions ready - do your research on new developments in the area, schools and other amenities they may ask about.”
Depersonalise the property You love your property just the way it is complete with wall to wall photos of your kids at every stage of their childhood - but your buyers don’t want to buy your house, they want to buy a house that will be theirs. It’s important, therefore, to depersonalise it. “It’s a good idea to keep things as neutral as possible when showing your property,” says Naz. “You’re essentially selling a blank canvas. Keep personal items to a minimum to allow potential buyers to envisage themselves living at the property.”

Reducing the tax payable on the sale of a buy to let property. Q. I own a buy to let property in a nice location where I wouldn’t mind living, and the tenant who has been paying me rent for a number of years has decided to move on. I was considering selling the property but there is likely to be a substantial Capital Gains Tax bill to pay. Can you offer any advice as to how this could be reduced? A. As you are considering selling the property you could, with a little patience and planning, improve the position. As you are married then transfers of assets between husband and wife (or civil partners) are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Such transfers, in your case the buy to let property, are deemed to take place at no gain or no loss. However, there can be an interesting interaction between this relief and the well-known exemption that applies to Capital Gains made on the disposal of a principal private residence. In your case, if you transfer your buy to let property to your wife, her acquisition and your disposal is on a no gain, no loss basis.

Normally, the date of the acquisition of the buy to let property for tax purposes for your wife is the date of the transfer to her from you. However, in the tax rules for principal private residence relief, there is a special rule for transfers between spouses (or civil partners) of a property which is their only or main residence. This states, as in your case, that the period of ownership for your wife effectively begins with the date when you originally became the owner of the property. So, in your case, you could arrange to transfer this property to your wife and, providing she decides to use it as her principal private residence (you can also live there with her), she could then arrange to sell the property after a reasonable period of say 15 months. As long as this property is her principal private residence then the whole gain should be exempt from tax. For this result to apply it is important that your wife has sole (as opposed to joint) ownership of the property. Effectively the rules suggest that when one spouse transfers a property to the other spouse then, the ‘slate is wiped clean’ as far as previous usage of the property is concerned. Your wife will have received the property at the date of transfer, although the historical gains from the period when it was a buy to let property under your ownership, which would otherwise have been taxable at 28%, can benefit from the private residence exemption, meaning no tax to pay. Remember that for this to work it is important that the property only becomes her private residence after the transfer has been made from yourself. As with all things tax, it does make sense to take proper advice.

Demanding a detour from the streets catching much of Liverpool’s foodie footfall these days, the restaurant formerly home to long-running, popular Puschka surely needed something special to keep attracting diners. Luckily ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ winner Anton Piotrowski was on hand to step into the Rodney Street space with Röski. The restaurant’s website promises “big flavours, big smiles, and great service” along with a “super relaxed atmosphere,” several of which were ticked off the list immediately after we arrived. As with the laid-back and unpretentious setting, simplicity seemed to be the key with food options. We were offered a choice of four taster menus – a five-dish choice and its vegetarian version (both £55), or a seven-dish choice and its meat-free alternative (both £75). My dinner date and I were won over by the sound of a fine dining take on scouse and the mysterious ‘Roski’s got game’, both settling on the meaty five-dish menu. As we awaited the main event we were treated to a snack which, as our server explained, would bring a “taste of Thailand”. Not only was the Southeast Asian suggestion music to our ears as the ‘beast from the east’ loitered outside, but the

food was a colourful delight to look at and even more enjoyable to eat. A selection of carrots was accompanied by a curry kick and powdery goats milk which melted away in the mouth. An amuse-bouche followed in the form of mushroom ragu with aged parmesan and wild garlic – a beautifully creamy, perfect combination. As with many dishes we experienced during the evening, the flavours gently lingered until the next plate arrived, keeping our taste buds satisfied. Next up was the start of our menu proper – scouse with smoked vegetables, a smoked bacon dumpling and beef gravy. Once the lid was lifted we were met with a picturesque stack of ingredients and an amazing aroma. The menu’s buttermilk bread with roast onion butter accompanied it as we were assured that “dipping is encouraged”. Whilst it may have looked somewhat different to your ma’s classic bowl of scouse, Röski’s version was no less hearty and comforting. The bread’s slightly blackened crust added to the depth of flavours. The roasted cauliflower with caramelised cauliflower, parmesan custard, parmesan tuile, curry oil and frozen apple came next. With just a few core ingredients cooked in multiple ways, this spectacular twist on cauliflower cheese was a prime example of Röski’s clever cooking, impressing with an array of textures rather than overwhelming with too many flavours. We waited with anticipation to find out what the centrepiece of the ‘Isle of Skye’ served with celeriac and marmite would be, and it didn’t disappoint. A blowtorched lobster claw was packed with all the freshness you’d expect from seafood and its meaty texture was complemented by the warmth of its accompaniments.
Röski
‘Röski’s got game’ was revealed as a surprisingly delicate plate of tender venison, served alongside butternut squash jus, a subtle piece of black pudding and cabbage and, again, it was delicious. Despite red meats and rich flavours, Röski’s portions were just right and perfectly balanced. There was no drowsy food coma looming as dessert arrived and I couldn’t wait to tuck into the black forest gateau-style dish. Estate chocolate – again in a various forms including mousse, brownie and brittle crispy pieces – alongside boozy cherries and icy goats milk was an indulgent hit with my sweet tooth. An accompanying hint of the wilderness was brought to life with liquid nitrogen, creating a magical smoking centrepiece on the table as we ate. To round off our feast it seemed only right that we sample the dish made famous by chef Anton’s stint on ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ – ‘Röski gone carrots’ (available for a £10 supplement). From its fun presentation – a plant pot with a carrot growing from chocolatey, popping candyinfused ‘soil’ – to its delightful layers of frosting and cake, it was certainly the most memorable carrot cake I’ve ever tried and a triumphant finale to our evening of fabulous food. Röski is an extravagant treat but, in my view, its definitely worth cutting out a couple of takeaways or pricey lunches to make a special night of it there, as it certainly delivers on food with the ‘wow’ factor and its promise of a friendly, relaxed experience.

PLANS REVEALED FOR LIVERPOOL SPRING FESTIVAL Liverpool Spring Festival is set to take place in Sefton Park (next to the lake) from 28 - 29 April with a fun packed weekend for visitors of all ages. The outdoor event features a whole raft of interactive workshops, vegetarian cookery classes, a producers’ market, Garden & Lifestyle stalls, and there will also be plenty of food and drink on offer in the street food village and across the festival site. During the weekend, families can enjoy a programme of entertaining and educational sessions, which are themed around nature and wildlife, including seed planting and herb workshops, as well as birds of prey and mini beasts. There is plenty more to keep young animal lovers busy with a pop-up farm, where youngsters can get up close to guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets, with an opportunity to bottle feed baby lambs and goats. The festival includes an entertaining sheep show, which is guaranteed to make the audience
smile as nine different breeds of sheep appear on stage, each with their own theme tune. Visitors will learn about the different breeds of sheep, the wool they produce and there will be an opportunity to watch the skill involved in sheep shearing. There will also be arts and crafts, a vintage fairground, woodland themed storytelling sessions and donkey rides throughout the weekend. Visitors who prefer a more laid back weekend can choose from a number of free health and wellbeing workshops including yoga, meditation, relaxation and healthy eating. lying in to Shannon Airport is the perfect landing point for exploring some of the most treasured tourist spots on Ireland’s spectacular west coast – a region steeped in culture and natural beauty. Housed in a renovated 13th Century friary, this sophisticated bar and restaurant is the brainchild of Dermot and Noreen Fetton – a duo well respected in hospitality circles thanks to their work at Dromoland Castle. Alongside awarding-winning chef Paddy Collins, the pair have crafted a menu brimming with charming contemporary creations which don't cost the earth. For €25, the three-course set menu is a particular stand-out with highlights including sautéed mushrooms and spinach on brioche, parmesan cream sauce and slow roast beef striploin with brandy and cracked black pepper sauce.

Get your head down “If you’re looking to stay in the city centre, the Corrib House Guest Accommodation is a charming, Georgian-style townhouse with dramatic views of the River Corrib and the Salmon Weir”, says Caitlin. “The 19th Century house has been beautifully restored in a traditional style, and their brunch is something of a local secret.”
Grab a bite
Built in 1425 on the site of a Viking trading camp dating back to 970, Bunratty Castle is regarded by many as the most complete and authentic medieval castle in the whole of Ireland. Situated just a 10-minute drive from Shannon Airport, the castle was restored to its former medieval glory in 1954 and now contains an array of 15th and 16th Century furnishings, tapestries, and works of art. Stick around until nightfall to experience the famous medieval banquets which take place all year round - complete with a period specific menu, a good sing-along and plenty of craic.
If it’s a caffeine hit you’re after, then Caitlin highly recommends Badger and Dodo and its Corkroasted beans. Restaurant-wise, Galway is overflowing with culinary hotpots and Caitlin reckons it can be a tough decision to choose just one. “Kai Restaurant in Galway’s bohemian West End is a great option for weekend brunch and dinner, offering award-winning locally-sourced Irish food, along with some of the best homemade cake around,” she says. Fancy something more laidback? Caitlin suggests you try Handsome Burger inside the pub, Caribou. “Their rosemary chips are unreal, the burgers are deadly and they even have an Indian-style veggie burger,” she adds.
2018 Fleadh Nua, Ennis
Explore the city
Nearly every town and county in Ireland holds its own summer festival celebrating the country’s love of music and a good time. Started in Dublin in 1970, the Fleadh Nua – which means New Festival – is seen as the precursor to the lot. The 2018 edition starting on 20 May in Ennis promises to be the biggest and best yet – chock full of concerts, traditional Irish music sessions, recitals, Irish dance competitions and street entertainment – all spread over nine wonderful days.
Caitlin reckons a Saturday morning is best spent checking out the Galway Market outside St. Nicholas’ Church for hot fried doughnuts and huge portions of curry. If its live entertainment you’re after then she recommends catching a traditional session at The Crane Bar, or a gig or comedy set at the Róisín Dubh. Meanwhile, if the sun is shining, Caitlin suggests you join the locals for “a few cans at the Spanish Arch, or a plunge into the sea at Blackrock in Salthill”.

WoWFEST 2018 to bring big names and timely topics Liverpool literary organisation Writing on the Wall is lining up a melting pot of hot topics and big names for its 19th annual festival. The recently announced WoWFEST 2018 will follow the theme ‘Crossing Borders’ when it takes place across the city throughout May, responding to recent national and international political, social and cultural developments around issues of Brexit, migration, race, diversity and nationalism. Current themes including the #Justice4Grenfell and #MeToo campaigns and gender equality are among those to be discussed and debated across the packed programme, which will feature appearances by Lily Allen (pictured), ‘Peep Show’ star Robert Webb and Benjamin Zephaniah to name a few.
FACT celebrates 15 years in Liverpool When it opened on Wood Street in 2003, the FACT (Foundation of Art and Creative Technology) headquarters became Liverpool’s first new arts building since the Philharmonic Hall in 1939. During its 15 years in the city, the venue has explored new media, played host to immersive and thought-provoking free exhibitions and held hands-on workshops. A week-long programme of celebrations to mark its milestone birthday is now lined up for 11-15 April and sounds as interesting, entertaining and interactive as ever. A mix of free and ticketed events are being held, continuing FACT’s work with exciting artists and filmmakers and exploring a range of mediums as well as audience interaction. Highlights include a brain controlled film by Richard Ramchurn called ‘The Moment’, which will be screened for free in a caravan in Ropewalks Square and uses audience members’ live brain data to create a unique narrative with each viewing through brain computer interfaces. River royalty returns Two much-loved monarchs of the waves are preparing to return to Liverpool this summer as part of the city’s busy schedule of cruise ships. Always ones to make a spectacular entrance, Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria will sail into the Mersey on 22 May and will be followed by a visit from the Queen Elizabeth, which docks on 23 July. The separate arrivals of the popular ships come three years on from the landmark ‘Three Queens’ event, which drew more than one million spectators to the banks of the River Mersey to watch the duo and fellow Cunard ship Queen Mary 2 ‘dance’.
Liverpool Biennial attracts world renowned artists

The 10th Liverpool Biennial gets underway this summer and its newly announced programme promises some striking special commissions and projects from internationally renowned artists. More than 40 artists from 22 countries will present work responding to the call ‘Beautiful world, where are you?’ across various city venues including Bluecoat, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and Tate Liverpool as well as public spaces. Highlights include a collaboration between internationally acclaimed artist Ryan Gander and Knotty Ash Primary School, Oscar nominee Agnès Varda’s (pictured) first work in the UK and a large-scale public sculpture by Holly Hendry commissioned for Exchange Flags. Meanwhile artist Ari Benjamin Meyers will explore Liverpool’s musical history with a new film at the Playhouse, and Mohamed Bourouissa will create a new ‘healing garden’ in the heart of Toxteth with the help of the community. Liverpool Biennial 2018, which marks 20 years since the first event and a decade since Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, will run from 14 July until 28 October 2018.
TEDxLiverpool to serve up more inspiration The renowned TED brand has stirred up some excitement by filtering out the first details of its return to Exhibition Centre Liverpool in 2018. Details of when tickets will be on sale, as well as this year’s speakers, still remain under wraps but we do know the event will be hitting the city on 17 June. Bringing together innovators, experts and creative thinkers for a day of inspirational speeches, TEDxLiverpool last took place in 2016 with

appearances from Liverpool-born Sir Ken Robinson and the ‘doctor of the future’ Rangan Chatterjee. Dr Chatterjee’s presentation on how he thinks it’s possible to make diseases disappear has been viewed over one million times on YouTube. All 850 tickets for the 2016 edition sold out fast so organisers are this year urging anyone interested in attending to keep their eye’s peeled for ticket release information.
