Full steam ahead for first time buyers Mortgages taken out by home buyers hit a decade-long high in February 2018, according to figures produced by UK Finance.

There were 50,000 mortgages completed in February, the highest level for that month since 2007 – a heartening indication that the housing market is regaining fluidity.

More than half of the mortgages completed were for first-time buyers.

In contrast to that, house prices have risen only by around 2-4% over the past year – which could present further opportunities for first-time buyers as sellers are being more realistic in terms of what they can charge for the purchase of their home.

Head of residential law at MSB Solicitors, Tracey Quirk, says buying your first home should be an exciting process, but warns that patience and persistence are key.

Here she offers some easy to follow tips to getting the right deal on your first home:

1. Get a Help to Buy Isa and the right advice on how it works The Help to Buy ISA has been designed to make it easier for first-time-buyers to raise the cash for the mortgage deposit a home by offering an additional 25% on top of savings.

2. Get the right solicitor Remember that you and your solicitor are working together and in your best interests.

It’s easy to get caught up in some of the adversarial language used by agents and on the internet, but our job is to protect you, guide you through the process and complete as quickly as possible so you can start enjoying your new home.

3. Always ask questions Make sure you read all the documents your solicitor sends out to you and don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything you are unsure about – it is what we’re here for. Don’t be tricked into speaking to agents with regards to dates or procedure, always speak directly to your solicitor.

4. Budget Know your budget and have an agreement in principle from a mortgage lender. And remember hidden costs such as stamp duty and legal fees.

Request a home buyers report rather than standard valuation – this too is an additional cost but can save you thousands on unforeseen repairs in the future.

5. Be savvy Consider your options when buying your first home. It’s easy to be sucked in by proximity to your favourite coffee shops or a short walk home from the local pub, but buying a home is a major investment.

Weigh up the market, go to multiple viewings, work out the price per square foot.

Most importantly, though, try to get an understanding of the market and negotiate a price you think is fair.

The fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down though. Nearby Marine Point offers plenty of leisure opportunities for visitors and residents alike well into the night.

Spotlight on Seabank Amble away from the seafront and you’ll find Seabank Road and its growing collection of independent shops, bars and eateries alongside a smattering of wellestablished family businesses.

Flying Dutchman Stores is one such landmark, having been part of the New Brighton community for over 50 years. This peculiarly titled shop stocks household products, timber, fencing and gardening supplies – perfect for those weekend DIY jobs.

Another New Brighton business with a storied past can be found a stone’s throw from Seabank on Magazine Lane.

Dodgshons Bakery, which has been run by Mr and Mrs Jones since 1975, produces an assortment of fresh bread, pastries, cakes and other sweet and savoury creations on a daily basis.

Anyone hungry for a spot of antique hunting won’t be able to resist a rummage through Liberty Antiques or The Vintage Interior Fairy, with its selection of French shabby chic furniture and handmade gifts.

“Seabank is interesting for its mixture of antique and second hand shops which have brought business back onto the high street,” says Adam Dobbs, owner of Antiques & Other Stuff – another Seabank purveyor of antique, reclaimed and pre-loved wares.

“It's a beautiful place for a day out with the family being close to the beach with many little independent businesses existing close by.”

Food-wise, Adam highly recommends Rockwood Bistro next door, which he calls “by far the best restaurant in New Brighton”.

Advanced bookings are advised at this classy eatery owned and operated by chef-patron Christopher John Wood and manager Pauline Cragg.

by Christopher John using fresh ingredients which are all prepared on site to ensure a “unique dining experience”.

⌃ An awarding winning bite

Charming independent bar and eatery Blackberry Grove has earned a string of awards since launching a short walk from the seafront in 2015.

Its reasonably priced and varied menu caters for a broad spectrum with vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free eaters especially well taken care of.

This Grosvenor Road restaurant’s commitment to offering a diverse menu was recognised in 2016 when Blackberry Grove was named as one of the 20 best places in the country for people with food allergies to eat out at.

Liverpudlian Joanna Jones is the brains behind this seaside success story and thinks New Brighton is a location really on the up at the moment.

“It's a lovely vibe and there are some fantastic people here,” says Joanna, who now lives in New Brighton with her children.

“There are independent businesses, eateries and bars popping up all the time. It's really great to see.

“There are so many free community based events too, like yoga at the beach, sunset swims, group drumming and mindfulness sessions.

“My children and I often pop to the beach after school and walk the dog. I often tell them how lucky they are to have this on their doorstep.”

Home options

Well connected Trains to Liverpool run every 15 minutes from New Brighton train station – a short walk from the promenade. The journey time to James Street is just over 20 minutes with regular services to Ellesmere Port and Chester also available.

Although New Brighton no longer has its own landing stage (it closed in 1971), commuters can still catch the ferry to Liverpool from nearby Seacombe and the crossing time is around 10 minutes.

Heading further afield?

The M53 is a short drive away, allowing quick and easy access to the rest of Wirral and on to Chester in less than 40 minutes.

New Brighton possesses a diverse mix of housing, catering for families and couples alike with Victorian homes complemented by more modern developments.

According to figures from Rightmove, most of the properties sold over the past year in New Brighton were semi-detached homes which went for an average price of £179,399.

Terraced properties sold for an average of £134,607, whilst flats averaged £111,839.

The Interview

At the end of a storm Bootle-born Andy Grant joined the Royal Marines aged 17. Three years later he was hit by an explosion in Afghanistan and suffered catastrophic injuries including a severely damaged right leg.

Following countless operations and against doctors’ advice, Andy chose to have his leg amputated below the knee. The surgery gave his prized Liverpool FC tattoo a twisted alteration – ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ became ‘You’ll Never Walk’.

We caught up with Andy to find out how this terse prediction couldn't have been more wrong.

Interview by LAWRENCE SAUNDERS Could you explain what happened to you in Afghanistan and the injuries you sustained?

It was 5.30am and I was on a routine foot patrol.

My best friend jumped over a ditch and unfortunately what he didn't see was that on the other side was a trip wire attached to two trees.

He hit the trip wire and two bombs went off in between us, blowing him forward and me back. I suffered 27 different injuries including shrapnel in my face, two broken forearms, a broken elbow, a broken sternum and both lower legs were broken - I was in a pretty bad way.

For the first five minutes after it happened I couldn't feel any pain, it was just panic.

Thankfully all the lads calmed me down and then it was 35 minutes of pain to be honest. I knew there was something seriously wrong with my right leg.

Within 40 minutes I was on a helicopter heading to a hospital in Afghanistan where I had two life-saving operations before being flown back to the UK. How did it get to the point where you had to decide whether or not to have your leg amputated?

The doctors initially gave me the option of amputation but they were confident they could fix my leg; it would just take about 18 months to process.

Obviously I didn't want to rush into the amputation if it didn't need to be done so I decided to give the ‘Ilizarov’ frame a go, which is basically a huge cage around your leg. It worked.

The bone that needed to grow back, grew back, and it stabilised everything but the problem was there was still so much nerve damage.

Although the leg had healed in a sense, I just wasn't living the type of life I wanted to live.

Being in the marines, I was used to living life at 100 miles an hour so life at a snail’s pace just wasn't for me.

I had the leg amputated in late November 2010 and started my rehabilitation just after Christmas when I was given a number of prosthetic legs.

It took me about six months to master walking and then I started to run again.

When did you decide it was time to get serious with your running again a er the operation?

I’d done a few half marathons, but nothing too competitive. Then in 2014 I took part in the first Invictus Games. It’s basically a mini Paralympics for injured soldiers set up by Prince Harry.

I managed to grab a couple of gold medals in the 400m and 1,500m. It was a massive springboard for me onto other challenges.

I did initially want to go for the Paralympics but the longest distance they do is 400m - I like to run 5,000m and 10,000m.

When I realised that the Paralympics wasn't an option I started searching for other amputees who run 10k and I came across a Canadian runner called Rick Ball.

As far as I could see, Rick was the fastest single leg amputee over 10k in the world and I

thought ‘I’m going to have a go at breaking that record’.

I went to Liverpool Harriers and joined up with Tony Clark, who became my running coach.

We gave ourselves six months and started training very intensely three times a week. I broke the record in July 2016 with a time of 37 minutes and 17 seconds.

Aside from the incident in Afghanistan, you’ve been through some pre y horrendous trauma in your life, including losing your mum when you were just 12 years old. How have you managed to cope?

I try and use the bad things that have happened to me to spur me on. Losing my mum was by far the hardest thing I’ve been through, so I try to compare that event to other challenges in my life.

Joining the marines was tough but it was nothing compared to losing my mum. Getting blown up wasn't ideal but it was nothing compared to the pain I suffered at 12.

My dad has also been amazing throughout everything. He’s been my best mate since my mum passed away.

Also since getting injured, one thing I’ve felt very lucky about is being surrounded by other marines and other soldiers who have suffered similar injuries.

I was in a military hospital and a military rehabilitation centre. With the banter between the lads you don't really get a chance to feel sorry for yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been some dark times and I have really opened up in the book and tried to be as honest as I could about those moments.

Football’s Jamie Carragher and snooker’s Ronnie O'Sullivan provided the foreword and a erword respectively for your autobiography ‘You’ll Never Walk’. How did these two sporting greats get involved?

On the Monday morning after my first weekend back from hospital, Jamie knocked at my door and came in for a cup of tea.

Being a Bootle lad and a massive Liverpool FC supporter, he’s my hero. For him to come and visit me was unreal.

Since I met him he has given me his phone number and said ‘if you need anything, I’m here for you’. He’s donated tonnes of stuff which I’ve auctioned off for military charities and has become a mate now, which is a bit surreal.

With Ronnie, I met him during a documentary we made about my attempt to beat the 10k record. It turns out Ronnie is a keen runner himself and has used it to help him deal with some tough times, so we had a lot in common.

He loves Liverpool and has got a lot of friends here. Whenever he’s up in the city he’ll drop me a text asking if I fancy a run.

Again, it’s a bit surreal. I didn't think I’d have Ronnie O’Sullivan texting me asking to go for a run but it’s great.

What’s next for you? Have you got any other challenges on the horizon?

I’ve got the Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon on 19-20 May – that’s going to be my next big challenge. It’s the first marathon I’ve done.

That’s my sole focus at the moment but I’d love to get my 10k time down even further in the future and to try and break the half marathon record as well.

Sharing property income in a tax efficient way Q. My wife and I are planning to purchase a property to rent out but, as my wife earns considerably more than me, I’m concerned that she will pay a lot of higher rate tax on the rents we will receive. Have you any suggestions for improving the position?

A. On the face of it, this should be a simple thing to solve as like many things, the allocation of income between husband and wife or civil partners is a common area allowing some simple planning but, as with all things tax, there are rules for the unwary.

Unlike say a business trading partnership between a husband and wife or, between civil partners, where a simple written agreement can be used to split profits efficiently e.g. a higher percentage of profits being allocated to the lower tax rate paying individual, there are different rules for property income.

The tax laws on this have not changed for many years. Normally where rents are received from a jointly-owned property, then the income is, by default, split 50/50 under the rules.

However, it is possible to arrange matters and vary this treatment providing appropriate steps are taken: First, a special joint election needs to be made to H M Revenue and Customs on a Form provided by them; and: Second, the property owners must be beneficially entitled to unequal shares of the rental income.

Not surprisingly, the Form requires you to prove the second point.

You need to be aware that if the property is owned as joint tenants (which is how the majority of jointly owned properties are held), then the split is automatically 50/50.

However property can be owned in unequal shares as ‘tenantsin-common’. This type of ownership usually means that at the time you purchase the property you would purchase it as ‘tenants-in-common’ and the legal paperwork needs to reflect this. This type of property ownership would also need to be shown on the Land Registry documents. In addition you would also need to be able to demonstrate the unequal shares of the property that each of you own.

It appears that H M Revenue and Customs are paying closer attention at the moment as to how rental income is divided between husband and wife or civil partners on their Tax Returns, so as with all things tax, it does make sense to take proper advice.

Move Publishing’s charity Snowdon climb raises more than £1,800

Move Publishing has raised more than £1,800 for The Whitechapel Centre after taking on Wales’ highest peak.

The team behind YM Liverpool tackled the 1,085-metre high Mount Snowdon in aid of the charity, which supports Liverpool’s rough sleepers and those on the brink of homelessness.

Move Publishing’s mountaineers followed the Llanberis Path to the summit on one of the hottest days of the year so far and made it back down to the bottom in a seven-hour round trip.

Matthew Smith, Move Publishing’s social media guru who led the 20 April trek, says: “The blazing sunshine brought its own challenges for the team to overcome on the day, but breathtaking views and a fantastic fundraising total for The Whitechapel Centre were a brilliant reward for everyone’s hard work.

“We’d like to thank all of our supporters who have helped us raise so much money for a vital Liverpool cause.”

Charlotte Hopkins, The Whitechapel Centre’s events and community fundraiser, says: “The money raised will help us provide things like breakfast or a change of clothes every day, but it will also help us provide long-term support to help someone move out of homelessness and into accommodation.

“Last year The Whitechapel Centre supported over 3,000 people to end or prevent homelessness and we couldn’t do this without the help of organisations like Move Publishing.”

The Whitechapel Centre is open 365 days a year and provides services to people who are sleeping rough, living in temporary accommodation or those at risk of becoming homeless.

Charlotte adds: “There are lots of things you can do to support The Whitechapel Centre, such as collecting items (we keep our website updated with the things we’re running short of), fundraising, volunteering, and if you are worried about someone who is rough sleeping you can contact us on 0300 123 2041.”

With new head chef James Dodd at the helm, Neston’s Morning Noon Night has launched an evening menu to complement its already popular ‘morning and noon’ offerings.

By day, the Wirral venue is the perfect breakfast and lunch spot, serving up eggs, sandwiches and sweet treats. By night, the space transforms into a tapas bar and restaurant, with small plates championing James’ ‘field to fork’ philosophy.

The interior seems to mimic this down to earth approach too. Think rustic tables and chairs, chalkboards and minimal furnishing. All in all it makes for a relaxing, informal restaurant, so it was no surprise to see other tables occupied with couples and groups unwinding with a bottle of wine or two.

As my dinner date and I browsed the main menu we each ordered an aperitif of orange clove gin (£7) and a dish from the starter snacks menu, recommended to us by our server.

The devilled eggs (£1 p/egg), perhaps best known as retro 70s party food, were given a modern, spicy twist thanks to the addition of sriracha sauce and were so moreish!

If you like your food hot then the Nduja toast (£2.50) will be right up your street. The

spreadable pork salami was full of sweet and spicy flavours and worked perfectly slathered on crispy bread.

Next up was the start of the small plates menu. I know there’s somewhat of a division of opinion on the small plate trend, but at Morning Noon Night it really works. With the menu content changing weekly it makes sense to offer small plates of locally-sourced, seasonal dishes. Plus, with some unique flavour combinations it gives diners a chance to experiment and try something a little out of your comfort zone.

Another common issue is just how small are the plates? There’s nothing worse than underordering and going home hungry! But rest assured as we ordered six plates which, as it turns out, was a little over ambitious, especially with the snacks beforehand.

The crispy duck kohlrabi ‘pancake’ (£9) with rhubarb ketchup, spring onion and cucumber was the first to arrive. As advertised, the duck was crispy and aromatic and the rhubarb ketchup gave the dish a fruity, tangy kick.

The dishes that followed were just as tasty.

The caraway cabbage and ham hock (£6.50) was the perfect spring dish; it was fresh, light and the shredded ham was so tender.

As for the jersey royals and purple sprouting broccoli with caper and raisin dressing (£7.50), the best way I can describe it is as a rather posh potato salad. Simply delicious.

In contrast, the fregola, crab, chilli butter and bottarga (£8) was a warming bowl of comfort food. I loved the fregola - a type of Sardinian pasta that resembles large cous cous - and paired with the sweetness of the crab and hints of chilli, I didn’t want the bowl to end.

The coffee braised brisket and creamed white

beans with sumac onion (£8) was a standout moment of the meal. The coffee added a deep, smoky flavour to the juicy meat which fell apart so easily, while the beans were creamy and the perfect accompaniment to the tender beef.

Another favourite was the twice cooked chicken with Korean ketchup & black sesame (£6.50). The chicken was tender with a crisp, flavourful skin, and I loved the Asian influence in the sauce.

To finish off the feast we shared the chocolate mousse and sesame brittle with miso caramel (£6.50). The mousse was rich and decadent and the sesame brittle added a crunchy, nutty flavour. However the caramel infused with Japanese miso didn’t quite hit the mark for either of us.

Overall, Morning Noon Night certainly brings something a little different to the market town of Neston and serves up imaginative, delicious food that’s sure to get you talking.

MAN BEHIND CITY’S TALLEST BUILDING PLANS RESTAURANT

SQUASH NUTRITION PREPARING NEW COMMUNITY SHOP AND CAFÉ Social enterprise Squash Nutrition is preparing to open a new ‘community food hub’ with a shop and café in Liverpool.

The food, arts and environmental group says the “beautiful timber-frame building and lush food garden” will also include a small cinema and making studio, a lab for food experimentation and a community kitchen among its features.

Opening on 4 May under the name ‘Squash’, the site on Windsor Street in Liverpool 8 will welcome people from the local area as well as the city’s wider communities and visitors.

The hub has been planned and designed by 30 local people, with help from architecture practice Urbed, and now volunteers and staff are looking forward to revealing the facility, which will also provide a home for Squash Nutrition’s catering service and cooking and food growing classes.

All aspects of the building are said to have been carefully considered to achieve the greenest, most environmentally friendly structure, and materials including recycled steel, glass and newspaper have been used. Electricity for the shop and café will be generated through rooftop solar panels.

A spokesperson for the social enterprise, which is also behind Liverpool’s Food for Real arts festival, says: “All sorts of delicious, seasonal, multicultural food will be available, with the shop selling ingredients that feature in the dishes on offer in the café.

“Visitors can take the recipes home to cook the dishes and there will be regular cooking sessions with our chef to teach the secrets to tasty, healthy food.”

Squash will be open on 4-5 May before opening from Thursday to Saturday throughout the month and then increasing to four to five days a week.

The project, which will be run by Squash Nutrition, its members and a local steering group, has been funded with the help of grants, donations and a crowdfunding campaign.

The founder of the company behind Liverpool’s tallest building, West Tower, is planning to open a new restaurant on Lark Lane.

Hugh Frost of the Beetham Organisation wants to replace a set of garages on the popular street with a 72-cover eatery.

According to a document included with the planning application submitted to Liverpool City Council, the 12 garages are “outdated, poorly maintained and, it is understood, disused”.

The proposed scheme from Hugh, which has been put forward under the name Panoramic 34 Holdings, also includes two apartments facing onto Ivanhoe Road.

The ground floor of the development would be occupied by a new restaurant

fronting onto Lark Lane, with the first and second floors each featuring a single twobedroom apartment accessed from Ivanhoe Road.

Edge Architects, which designed the interiors of apartments at Beetham’s West Tower, as well as acting as delivery architect on the Panoramic 34 restaurant, has produced designs for the project.

The 40-storey West Tower usurped the Radio City Tower as Liverpool’s tallest building when construction completed in 2007.

The skyscraper’s lower floors act as the headquarters for the Beetham Organisation, with the remaining floors – apart from the 34th, which is home to Panoramic 34 – divided into luxury apartments and penthouses.

What’s happening? Bluedot is a family festival which holds its own musically, as The Chemical Brothers, The Flaming Lips, Future Islands and The Blue Planet in Concert with the Hallé are topping 2018’s diverse bill so far.

There’s much more than bands though, as the event promises a weekend of discovery against the backdrop of Jodrell Bank’s iconic Lovell Telescope.

Science workshops, out of this world activities and prominent speakers including evolutionist Richard Dawkins are also added to the mix, alongside other cultural features to be explored.

Plus David O’Doherty, Cassetteboy and Robin Ince are just a few of the stellar acts announced for this year’s comedy offering.

How to get there: You won’t have to travel for lightyears as Jodrell Bank is a mere 50-minute drive from Liverpool city centre.

Return coach services from outside Liverpool Central Library can also be booked in advance, and train travellers are advised to head to Macclesfield station to catch a coach to the site.

LIGHTNIGHT 2018 Liverpool’s free one-night arts festival returns on 18 May with over 100 events across the city.

Produced by Open Culture, this year’s LightNight programme explores ‘transformation’ and will look at the many changes happening around us, as well as the city’s revitalisation over the last decade.

With some surprises still to be announced, here’s our pick of the new and not-to-be-missed events occurring on this extra special evening…

LIGHTNIGHT @ MUSIC ROOM Where? Music Room, Liverpool Philharmonic

What time? 5-10pm What’s happening? A handpicked selection of gifted local acts will present their take on the theme of ‘transformation’.

Acts including vocal duo Limerance, Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge winner Lydiah and electronic art-pop twopiece St. Jude the Obscure will perform a number of recognisable songs they’ve ‘transformed’ with their own tuneful twist.

Each artist will take to the stage for a 10-minute set each hour, so stay for 60 minutes to catch the full line-up.

Local vendors including Ital Fresh, Skaus and Homebaked will offer nighttime nourishment in St Luke’s garden alongside musical entertainment from the Liverpool Guitar Society.

ANAMORPHIX

THE ORATORY SPEAKS

Where? Hinterlands What time? 7-9.45pm What’s happening? Artist Carlos Bernal presents his 3D light and sound installation ‘Anamorphix’ at the new Baltic Triangle venue.

Organisers are inviting visitors to “step into an immersive environment that will play with your perspective” during the event, where “no two people will see the same thing”.

SINGING MIRROR Where? British Music Experience (BME) What time? 6-10pm What’s happening? Billed as an “immersive light and sound experience”, interactive installation ‘Singing Mirror’ by artists Jack Wates and Alex Mead promises fun for all ages.

Audiences will find themselves transformed in a series of projected kaleidoscopic patterns, sounds and moving patterns based on their own movements.

The BME’s Star Café will also serve food and drink throughout the evening, with live music provided by the in-house band.

Where? Liverpool Cathedral What’s happening? Celebrate the transformation of the grounds of the Grade I-listed Oratory into a beautiful wildflower garden.

Pupils from The LIPA Primary School have been sketching the garden and its growth as they create it over the spring, whilst learning about the cyclical time of natural systems, biodiversity and ecology.

Jayne Seddon, the school’s artist in residence, will show the children’s observational studies with a workshop alongside a display of artwork installed in the Oratory grounds.

PAPER BRIDGE Where? Atrium at Mann Island What’s happening? This rather unique event down at Mann Island will see 800 people construct a 15-metre bridge completely out of paper.

Created with pieces of paper on which participants will share their aspirations for the future and the transformations they wish to see in the world, the work has been organised by Tate Liverpool, Arup and Open Eye Gallery.

THREE FESTIVALS TALL SHIPS REGATTA 2018

The Tall Ships are returning to Liverpool, with three unique festivals lined up to welcome the international fleet.

From 25-28 May the city centre, Albert Dock and Pier Head will represent the Tall Ships race ports of Liverpool, Dublin and Bordeaux respectively, boasting a packed line-up of theatre, performance, exhibitions and music.

We’ve studied the programmes to bring you four of our favourite events taking place across this bumper bank holiday get-together.

F T SCULPTURE

‘MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE’

at

PIER HEAD

Artist Lulu Quinn presents her mighty ‘Message in a Bottle’ sculpture, which has a very timely focus as it’s made with thousands of recycled plastic bottles containing personal messages from local school children about the future of the environment.

Illuminated by a glow from within, the 26ft blue bottle will become a stunning beacon on Pier Head every night until 28 May when it will board one of the Tall Ships and head to Dublin for the second leg of the event.

PARTY OF THE DECADE at LIVERPOOL ONE Liverpool ONE celebrates its landmark 10-year anniversary with a special party featuring street performers, food sampling and a cheery atmosphere.

Head down to the UK’s largest open air shopping centre from 12pm on Bank Holiday Monday to join in the fun and games.

A giant 23ft moon replica lands at Liverpool Cathedral as part of the ‘Changing Tides’ creative programme curated for the festival.

Created by celebrated British artist Luke Jerran using detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, the moon will be accompanied with sound composed by BAFTA and Ivor Novello winner, Dan Jones.

LIFE-SIZE SPERM WHALE in WILLIAMSON SQUARE A life-size sperm whale has run aground in Williamson Square and its belly is resonating with tales of hidden treasure and high jinks on the high seas.

Circo Rum Ba Ba a women’s theatre troupe which combines off-beat characters with circus skills - will be performing six 30-minute storytelling sessions inside the 50ft creature on Friday 25 May from 10am till 5pm.

Well, unless you’re talking about theatre of the surgical kind!

The nationally acclaimed Anatomy Lab LIVE will head to Liverpool on 25 January, 2019 as its next tour reaches more towns and cities than ever before, and it’s already shaping up to be an experience like no other.

Attendees at the event, which has previously hit headlines and sold out two tours, will enjoy a two-course meal within an operating theatre dining room before working through a complete dissection of the human body.

Expect tables within the venue at The Village Hotel in Whiston to be covered with blue surgical drapes and accompanied by surgical trollies with clamps scalpels and surgeons’ tools.

Human anatomist Samuel Piri and his team of clinicians will lead the way as a live patient is rushed through the crowd and into a pod before being anaesthetised, and surgery is broadcast onto screens.

Each guest will don real surgical overalls and use real surgeons’ kits to attempt procedures on specimens before claiming an Anatomy Lab Live CPD certificate.

An exclusive merchandise kiosk will also be on hand, offering you the chance to pick up extra mementos from the night such as blood infusion bag coffee cups and organ transplant lunchboxes.

‘Edge of your seat action’ is promised as leading woodchopping athletes prepare to descend on Liverpool for a global sporting event.

On 19-20 October the Stihl TIMBERSPORTS® World Championship will take place at Echo Arena Liverpool – the first time it’s been held in the UK – and is expected to attract around 8,000 spectators.

Watch competitors saw, slice and chop wood at speed in the waterfront venue for a host of challenges including the Underhand Chop, the Single Buck and the Springboard to name a few.

Great Britain’s athletes will be among competitors from more than 20 countries around the world going head to head, as 2017 individual winner Jason Wynyard and team winners New Zealand battle to keep their titles.

Weekend and day tickets for adults and children are now available, with family day passes also on sale.
