ADVERTORIAL

Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors nominated in two categories at this year’s Legal Excellence Awards The awards are organised by the Law Society to “celebrate excellence” across the legal profession in England and Wales. MSB has been shortlisted for Medium Law Firm of the Year and managing partner, Emma Carey, is also shortlisted in the Woman Lawyer of the Year category. She and members of the team will attend the awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, October 17. Emma said she was “thrilled” at the nominations, adding: “I truly believe each and every member of team MSB has made a contribution to us being shortlisted… I couldn’t be prouder.” Other Liverpool city region law firms on the shortlist included Morecrofts, Hillyer McKeown, Weightmans, Fletchers Solicitors, Thompsons Solicitors and Bennett Williams Solicitors. The Law Society says: “Our awards champion the work of solicitors, from smaller firms to big city players, in-house teams, exceptional

individuals, and everyone in between.” MSB has enjoyed significant growth over the past couple of years and last year broke through the £5m turnover barrier for the first time. It has established a national reputation for excellence in a number of areas, in particular crime and family law. Emma has spent the last few years building up MSB’s family department and its pioneering work has seen the firm take on cases in emerging areas of the law such as international child abduction. The firm’s commercial and residential property departments have also experienced steady and sustained growth and MSB have announced two strategic mergers and acquisitions since January. Earlier this year, long-time managing partner Paul Bibby retired from the firm and Emma stepped up to the role. She is continuing the growth trajectory of MSB, which employs around 100 people across three Liverpool offices,

through both organic growth and merger and acquisition. She has been instrumental in transforming the practice into one of the most progressive in the country. Around 80% of its employees and 50% of its partners are women and Emma has also put LGBT rights in the workplace at the top of her agenda. She added: “Thanks to the work of everyone at the firm we now have one of the most progressive and dynamic law firms in the country. That is not only reflected in a number of awards and the Legal 500 but, more importantly, in the great feedback we get from our clients. “In the past, one of the biggest challenges for firms in the region was the recruitment and retention of new talent. This collective achievement for Merseyside firms is a heartening indication of the strength of the sector and the level of talent in the region – it is a real sign of the times.”

The Interview

PAINT thetown... Ever since painting his popular interactive wings mural on a Baltic Triangle wall, Woolton artist Paul Curtis has been leaving his creative mark all over the city. With his artworks appearing everywhere from restaurants and retail parks to housing developments and even the set of a forthcoming Danny Boyle film, Paul tells us about his inspirations, dream projects and rise to prominence in Liverpool.

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

You rediscovered art a er leaving a career in the North Sea oil and gas industry. What was your art background before that, did you study it? The highest qualification I had in art was a GCSE. I wanted to carry on doing it but career advice talked me out of it so I did sciences instead. I did a bit of art as a hobby but, even then, once I started working it took too much time. Was ‘For All Liverpool’s Liver Birds’ your first public artwork when you took art up again? The first piece I did was for my niece’s nursery but obviously that’s not public. There wasn’t that much work and I was trying to cold sell, so I did some pieces for the restaurant Cargo but I still wasn’t getting enough work. That’s when I decided to do ‘For All Liverpool’s Liver Birds’, because I didn’t have anything that was public enough to show what I could do. 8

YM Liverpool

Where did the idea come from to make it something people could interact with? Originally I was going to do something very different - a picture of a woman which I think would have looked good but probably wouldn’t have received anywhere near as much interaction. I thought if I did something people will want to take a photo in front of that would be ideal, as one of the reasons I was doing it was to get my name out, and I wanted to do something that has a connection to Liverpool. How prepared were you for the a ention it received in the end? It was unbelievable. Because of where it was I thought people might take a photo of it when they’ve had a few drinks. After I did it though, I went to bed that night and I wasn’t really prepared because I wasn’t that good on social media but I woke up in the morning and there was something like 39 messages from people I didn’t know sending me photographs of themselves with the wings. It was lovely to see and I said to myself that if it does get the attention then I might not be an artist anymore because I needed to get work, but at least I’ll have done something I can point to, even if I ended up doing something else. I was lucky people liked it so much that it

meant I could be an artist. How much of a turning point was that mural for you in terms of it leading to other projects? Massive because it was make or break for me. I was getting to the point where I was thinking ‘am I that good? Is there enough business and enough interest to do something like this?’ I’d said it was the last throw of the dice and if people don’t like it or it doesn’t work then that’s fine and I’ll get on with doing something else. Initially there was a lot of interest from the public but the work only followed maybe a month or later, and since then it’s been consistent. Your artwork is prominent around Liverpool now, at sites ranging from restaurants to housing projects. How do you feel seeing it everywhere? I’ve been lucky because I’ve been given some prominent places to paint in, which is great because it’s easier to get a wall when someone has commissioned and actually asked for it. People seem more suspicious when you just ask if you can paint on their wall. It’s kind of funny because I think it annoys my friends when we walk around town and I say ‘I painted that one!’

PEOPLE

“I woke up and there were 39 messages from people I didn’t know sending me photographs of themselves with the wings.”

DANNY BOYLE You shared a picture of yourself with director Danny Boyle on social media, having produced artwork for his forthcoming Beatles-related film. How did this come about? A production company left a message on my website but for some reason I didn’t see it until two days later. It was a very short message and I’d have expected it to be more detailed so I was sceptical at first. Then literally, as I read it, the phone went and it was them. They’d seen my work on Edge Lane at Liverpool Shopping Park and because of the nature of the film and how the scene was being shot in Lime Street, which was undergoing work so it didn’t look great in the background in some areas, they needed a cover that showed a connection to Liverpool and a connection to it being a station to make it obvious to the viewer. That’s why the piece showed a combination of buildings, including Lime Street, and it’s got a train in there. It was great, it came out of the blue really. How much of your own ideas do you get to include in your creations, and how much is led by a brief? It varies. It’s a balance because if I’ve been commissioned then I advise as an artist, but ultimately [the client is] buying something so you have to respect what they want. The painting I did for Coffee & Fandisha (main picture) is the branch of a coffee plant, and they just said they want something that will work with the building so they gave me a lot of freedom and it worked really well. Others try to shoehorn the interactive thing in and it doesn’t always work so I have to tell people. Even if I’m working on something I wouldn’t have thought to do, it’s still practice and learning a different style. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had chance to do my own artwork, but I’m planning to do some so it’s 100% my own choice then. Where do you take inspiration from as an artist when you’re working on your own projects? The stuff I do on canvas is more Edward Hopperstyle 1930s elegance and all that. Sometimes I do street scenes but I don’t know how well they translate to murals. When I do murals I think about what would work well with walls. It’s a blank canvas but it’s not the same as painting on a canvas.

I haven’t gone down the political and protest routes – I try to keep my artwork as something that will make people smile. I’m not against the other type of art but street art is a little forced on people so I think you should try and keep it likeable. That’s just my opinion though. What would be your dream project or space to work on? I’ve seen stuff on social media where people have done the sides of huge buildings. I’d love the chance to work on a really big project but that would have to be commissioned because the cost of doing something like that would be too much to take on. Do you look outside of Liverpool? It’s a double-edged sword because here in Liverpool people like to use me because I’m local, which is great but then every city is like that. Moving out of your city is a little harder because people say ‘why didn’t we use a local artist?’ One of the issues in Liverpool is we have so many listed buildings and conservation areas that you can’t really use them, and I wouldn’t paint on an architecturally significant building because I don’t think that’s right. In some cities where the buildings are not as beautiful as here there are more walls to paint.

Did you help position your work on set and meet people involved in the film? Yeah. We set it up overnight and they said ‘Danny said he wants to meet you in the morning’. I went down and met him and he’s a really nice bloke. We chatted for five or 10 minutes, he went off to do some filming and directing stuff, and then he came back as I was helping the guys put some stuff in place and said to me that it’d be nice to get a photo. I know he was doing it to help me but the way he did it was nice, it was the measure of the guy because I was a bit too shy to ask for a photo.

You’ve mentioned a documentary is being made about your art. Can you tell us more about that? A production company in London is thinking about putting this together. They want to make it and see if they can get interest. At the moment it’s still in the planning stage – they’re trying to discuss the best way to do it so we’ll see what comes of it.

Worried about not paying the right amount of tax on a holiday home Q. I own a modest holiday home abroad which, when I’m not using it, is usually let out to cover some of the running costs. I’ve always assumed that as it is overseas rent, it’s not taxable in this country – can you help please as a friend thinks I may have got this wrong? A. Your friend is correct. As you are resident and domiciled in the UK, then you are taxable on your worldwide income and should be declaring the foreign rents and paying tax on this income. This is a fairly common situation and HM Revenue and Customs is about to get tougher on those not paying the right amount of tax on their offshore assets.

If you are not in a position for a complete makeover, its no problem. I also supply and fit a standard bathroom suite in one day for just £610! Straight swap. Done, dusted and guaranteed plus all rubbish taken away.

HIGHspec BATHROOMS NOBODY DOES IT BETTER!

Some time ago, HMRC introduced a ‘Worldwide Disclosure Facility’ for individuals and companies to disclose undeclared UK taxes in relation to offshore assets such as the rent from your holiday home. HMRC is now receiving financial information from over 100 countries worldwide and is beginning to work through the details it holds. It is also comparing this information to the amounts declared by taxpayers. Additional tax may be payable if taxpayers have received overseas income such as: • Interest on overseas bank accounts • Dividends from overseas shareholdings • Rental income from overseas properties including holiday timeshares • Gains from the disposal of overseas properties As you have overseas income from at least one of the above sources that has not already been declared, I would advise you to seek good professional advice, as a matter of urgency, as it looks like you may be able to take advantage of the lower penalties available under the ‘Worldwide Disclosure Facility’ before 30 September 2018. You should be aware that, from 1 October 2018, much tougher penalties of up to 200% of the tax not paid can be charged on undeclared overseas income so you really do need to hurry.

Remember that a good accountant can help you to put things right and can also make sure you can deduct appropriate expenses from the overseas rent to help reduce the amount of tax you may owe. As with all things tax, it does make sense to take good professional advice.

Under the spotlight: ALLERTON’S

Situated in one of the city’s most desirable suburbs, Green Lane boasts a wealth of high-end housing options with bars, restaurants and a spectacular park right on its doorstep. As Ireland’s papal visit evokes memories of Liverpool 1982 and John Paul II’s Allerton stopover, we take a look at what makes this South Liverpool street so sought after with homebuyers.

“You’re never more than five minutes from Calderstones Park one of the region’s most elegant green spaces.”

A HISTORIC VISIT On 28 May 1982, Pope John II landed at Gatwick Airport for the start of a six-day tour of Great Britain. The first time a sitting Pontiff had ever visited these shores, His Holiness would greet and bless hundreds and thousands of Catholics across nine cities during his historic visit. His whistle stop tour of 16 UK venues began at Westminster Cathedral and included a meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and a huge open-air service at the old Wembley Stadium. On Sunday 30 May, the Holy Father arrived at Liverpool airport via helicopter from Coventry with thousands eagerly waiting to greet him. It’s estimated some one million people lined his route from Speke into the city centre where he visited Liverpool Cathedral before making his way along Hope Street to Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. After celebrating mass he travelled by ‘Popemobile’ to Green Lane, and the residence of close friend Archbishop of Liverpool Derek Worlock. Staying in Liverpool meant he could go more easily to Manchester on the next stage of his visit the following day. Monsignor John Furnival remembers: “Upon his arrival, the Pope immediately went to pray in the chapel for 15 minutes before sitting down for dinner with the bishops, his secretary and his valet. “He rose at around 6.30am the next day to go, after breakfast, to Heaton Park in Manchester, but not before going back upstairs to the room overlooking the street to wave to the crowds. “Some people had gathered in Green Lane all night.” No longer owned by the Archdiocese of Liverpool, 85 Green Lane has since been divided up into a number of apartments. A two-bedroom flat on Green Lane is currently on the market for £332,500 which claims to include the bedroom where His Holiness slept. 22 YM Liverpool

Falling inside the catchment area of an excellent local school is an absolute must for many families when looking to buy a new home. Choosing Green Lane would put you within walking distance of Bishop Eton Catholic Primary School which was described as outstanding in its most recent Ofsted report. Bishop Eton, which scores above the national average for both reading and maths, is rated five stars by school comparison website SchoolGuide.co.uk. Notable alumni include Irish country music sensation Nathan Carter and your humble wordsmith who captained the football team and starred as a tree in the year six Christmas pantomime.

From Green Lane you’re never more than five minutes from Calderstones Park - without doubt one of the Liverpool City Region’s most elegant green spaces. The 94-acre expanse boasts two of Liverpool’s most ancient treasures, a 1,000 year-old oak tree and the six mysterious stones which give the park its name. The megaliths will move off site for conservation later this year, before returning to form the centrepiece of a new heritage offer at The International Centre for Shared Reading. Scheduled to open in spring 2019, The Reader’s community hub at Calderstones Mansion House will include a bookshop, events space, a new café and reading rooms.

Destination Guide:

Starting this October, four flights a week will take off from Liverpool John Lennon Airport bound for Toulouse in the South of France. With the summer holidays disappearing as quick as your tan, what better time to plan an autumn break in one of la République’s most picturesque cities.

Awesome architecture Known in France as La Ville Rose, or The Pink City, due to the colour of the bricks used in many of its buildings, Toulouse is a thoroughly charming place to walk around. And any saunter through the city wouldn't be complete without a visit to Le Capitole. Clad in exquisite pink marble and set in a public square lined with swish bars and restaurants, this elegant 16th Century building houses the town hall, orchestra and opera house. Don't just marvel at the exterior beauty however, venture inside and feast your eyes on the gloriously festooned ceilings of the Salle des Illustres, a vast gallery where paintings chronicle the city’s 2,000-year-old past. Just a two-minute walk from the Place du Capitole is another of Toulouse’s celebrated buildings, the atmospheric Dominican monastery, Couvent des Jacobins. Characteristic of southern French architecture in the 13th Century, the former convent is famous for its immense ribbed vault – known as the Palm Tree. Home to the relics of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the monastery’s cloister, which regularly hosts concerts and exhibitions, is an oasis of calm in the middle of a busy city.

oulouse might not be top of your list when eyeing a weekend getaway on the continent, but you’d be dead wrong to overlook France’s fourth largest city. Boasting bustling food markets, high class shopping and one of the country’s most magnificent squares – even Vogue magazine thinks you should pass over Paris and visit La Ville Rose instead.

Marvellous markets If there’s one thing Toulousains love more than their brightly coloured buildings, it’s a good covered market. You’ll find one taking place somewhere in the city every day of the week, selling everything from authentic gastronomic delicacies to the coolest in vintage fashion. But the undisputed king of the sheltered souk in Toulouse has to be the sprawling Marché Victor Hugo. Named after the illustrious novelist, visitors have their pick of 88 stalls with more butchers, bakers and ice cream makers than you can shake a baguette at. The finest fish from the Mediterranean, artisan chocolates, jars of slow cooked Cassoulet casserole, and five stellar restaurants upstairs – it’s a must visit for foodies.

As well as having magnificent buildings and spectacular grub, Toulouse is also the heart of France’s aeronautical industry, with the headquarters of Airbus located in the suburb of Blagnac. The Aeroscopia museum, developed with the aerospace giant’s support, features an expansive selection of rare commercial, leisure and military aircraft, alongside an interactive area which lets visitors discover what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ during a flight. Want to go higher? The Cité de l'espace museum will near enough take you to the moon and back with a 150ft, full-scale replica of an Ariane 5 rocket and a mock-up control room where space fans can supervise their very own space launch. If it’s a decent pub crawl you're after, Andy suggests navigating the whole length of Rue Pargaminières. “From la Place du Capitol to Place St Pierre there are plenty of student bars, full of well, students, like le bar Basque and nearby there is La Rue des Blanchers for lots of exotic restaurants,” he says. Away from the food and drink, for those in search of a good walk Andy advocates the Jardin des Plantes. A botanical garden located on Allée Jules-Guesd, the park possesses nearly 100 species of deciduous trees and conifers with fairground and pony rides for the kids.

For 22 years, Wirral-born stand-up comedian Andy Pudding (not his real name) has called Toulouse his home. Whilst studying for a degree in French and Spanish at Liverpool John Moores University, Andy visited Toulouse and had such a good time he decided to make his stay permanent. We asked Andy, who performs regularly in bars and clubs across the city, to give us the lowdown on his must-visit spots. Saint-Cyprien, a cosmopolitan neighbourhood on the left bank of the Garonne river, is where Andy begins his tour. On Place du Ravelin, Andy recommends The Dispensary, “a great pub full of atmosphere”, he says - or the “more French” Le Bistrologue. However, if you’ve had your fill of flyboys and its out and out luxury you’re after then you’ll struggle to do better in Toulouse than the five-star La Cour Des Consuls Hôtel & Spa. Situated in the historic Carmes quarter,

this palatial residence radiates refinement from the get go with a grandiose staircase, ornate ceiling and sumptuous leather armchairs greeting guests in the lobby. Before heading out into town for an evening on the tiles, sample the renowned cuisine in the hotel’s attached restaurant and savour a drop of bubbly in the sumptuous Champagne bar.

Restaurant Review By Hannah Fowler |

Small plates |

By simple coincidence, I had visited Heritage a week earlier with friends so when my editor asked if I would like to review it, there was no hesitation – which is always a good sign when you want to return to a restaurant so soon. In fact, I was excited to sample more of the menu I didn’t have room for the first time. Heritage is a melting pot of different cultures. The family-run venture is inspired by the owners’ backgrounds and identities, so it’s no surprise to see a menu bursting with different influences, from Italy to the Middle East. While this could result in a messy, haphazard menu, Heritage avoids this trap through its simplicity. Welcomed by David and the team, we soon felt right at home as we settled in to a table by the bar. Browsing the drinks menu, I decided on

a Turncoat London Dry Gin with pomegranate and grapefruit (£6.50) while my date (the designated driver) went for a lime and soda. Arranged as small plates (3 for £15), the dinner menu offers a good selection of vegetarian, fish and meat dishes. Our first pick was the crispy cauliflower with satay sauce and pickled vegetable slaw (£6.50). Instead of being boiled to blandness, the humble cauliflower was made star of the show. Packed with oriental flavours and textures it was a real delight; even my partner, an avid meat eater confessed it was his favourite dish. Next to arrive was the bag of brine n’ fried chicken (£7) and fish n’ chips (£8). The chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy and flavourful inside and the pot of Heritage sauce gave it a spicy kick. Heritage’s fish n’ chips was a refined take on the seaside favourite. The fillet was tender with a perfectly crisped skin and while I prefer a chunky chip, the skinny fries were polished off in no time. Sticking with seafood, we also ordered the crispy squid with rice, vegetables, tomato and aioli (£7) and mini pizza board with tomato, courgette, prawn and parmesan (£7). The crispy fried risotto balls were tasty but I found the calamari a little dry. The creamy aioli brought everything together though and was a great accompaniment to the fried squid. The mini pizza board was simple, fresh and delicious. The flavour combination of prawns, garlic and parmesan was a real winner! Our final pick was the topped flatbread with

hummus, shredded chermoula lamb and pomegranate (£6.50). Packed with Middle Eastern flavours, the tender lamb had quite a kick. But paired with the smooth hummus, soft flatbread and juicy pomegranates, it was well balanced and one of our favourites of the evening. We couldn’t leave without trying the enticing dessert menu. I went for the baked vanilla cheese, home-made granola, meringue, berries & whipped cream (£6) but I must admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan. The deconstructed elements didn’t come together for me and while presented beautifully, it just didn’t have the creamy vanilla flavours I was expecting. The chocolate mousse, chocolate brownie, dried chocolate and ice cream (£6.50) on the other hand was sweet, decadent and so impressive to look at. I managed a fair few spoonfuls after prizing it away from my dinner date. All in all, the Heritage experience was fantastic and a tradition I could definitely get used to.

HANNAH RECOMMENDS The crispy cauliflower with satay sauce and pickled vegetable slaw – so moreish, you’ll forget you’re eating a vegetable!
